Any programmers out there? Returning bugs...

Lord Kuru.3685

There are a few possible reasons for this but one of them is version control. Lets say version 1 of the code has the bug. Two programmers A and B take version 1 and work on it. Version 1A is put back into live system with the bug fixed. Version 1B goes back into the live system later and it does not have the bug fix since it was not derived from 1A. It sounds stupid in a way but it is an ever present challenge in computing, especially in complex developments.

Interesting… you think this is a problem with Anet’s development system or a general problem with MMOs? I haven’t played any other MMOs before, but for other games (or just software in general), I’ve never seen bugs return from the dead with such frequency.

Nope. There’s opportunity cost. The time spent on implementing this awful idea could have gone to better use… maybe fixing the stuck bug that has once again returned. Or maybe implementing some less-awful idea.

The “Cannot drop bundles…” stuck bug is back. So is the ability to C&D walls. Necro minions seem to break and unbreak every other patch.

Every patch, there seems to be some fix from a previous patch that gets undone. Any programmers out there can shed light on how/why this happens so frequently?

I feel bad for ANet because a big problem with the playerbase is perception, and I think it’s because of the the tiny updates they drop. (and not even) I see a bunch of posts saying nothing happens for WvW, but we got siege disablers and golem mastery a little while ago, and we have some tweak bug fixes here and there. It’s not like nothing happens, it’s just nothing substantial. People are always talking about wanting expansions because it’s a guaranteed huge release of content, but I think these same people would blow through the majority of it in under two weeks anyway.

I think a bit more transparency will help show that they really are working on something, even if the WvW team is doing other stuff.

Siege disablers and golem mastery: when you measure the amount of work they do on WvW in terms of minutes per year, you know theres’ something wrong.

Certain click macros allowed now?

Lord Kuru.3685

The point of the thread is not that you can use macros undetected …I’m sure you can.

It’s that they are, for the first time, officially allowing macros in certain situations (musical instruments). And their reasoning for allowing it (not affecting gameplay) can seemingly be applied to other situations such as opening stacks of loot bags.

So if they are working on a logical set of rules — which is not necessarily the case — you should be allowed to use macros to open those stacks.

They are not going to fix the matchups. The same system has been in place for nearly 2.5 years and the chance of a meaningful change to it is virtually nil.

This. And looking at their most recent ideas, it might be better if they just do nothing and let WvW slowly evaporate away.

In any case, there is pretty much zero chance of positive change, so you may as well quit now.

They are testing removing white swords soon.

In other words: They are doing the strict absolute minimum when it comes to WvW.

If that’s the kind of ideas they’re thinking about, it’s probably better for them to continue to leave WvW alone to slowly bleed out and die.

As for automatic upgrades/cancelling upgrades: sounds like a troll/griefer’s dream. And Anet has shown they have zero intention to meaningfully deal with trolls (see troll thread where they clearly did not want to put in mods).

Honestly if they could only say “Yes we are preparing a major update for WvW” they would put an end to all the cynical and pessimistic posts.

No it wouldn’t. At this point, who would believe them? Unless by “major,” they mean something along the lines of adding a commander tag colors (each color sold separately, of course).

Some dev playing the game probably got his panties in a wad over white swords popping giving away his position. Next day, change nobody asked for gets escalated. Meanwhile a few dozen other bugs still persist in the game that a hoard of users have been asking to get fixed 2.5 years now.

This. It was one of the things mentioned in the adopt-a-dev results thread.

You can forgive a noob dev who never played WvW before for coming up with such a terrible idea. But the fact that this idea progressed all the way to being announced as coming in a future update is pretty sad. It tells us how little the devs understand/care about WvW.

Worst idea ever.

Look at this post about macros for musical instruments:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/audio/Sad-truth-of-playing-the-ingame-instruments/first#post4546267

So it seems macros are allowed so long as they don’t give the player any gameplay advantage.

Click macros that are used to open bags or buy items that you need a lot of, is that also ok now? I don’t see how you have any gameplay advantage out of that.

And if for some reason there is an advantage, would it be ok if the macro worked such that it auto-clicked slower than a human would (the goal not being speed, but rather saving your click-finger as well as your mouse button)?

Maize balm should be nerfed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lord Kuru.3685

Lord Kuru.3685

anet already posted that they are fine because they aren’t creating gold in the economy, it’s just moving gold from one player to another (with the TP tax). A gold sink.

One maize balm costs about 10 silver on the TP. If I buy it, that’s 1.5 silver that leaves the economy (TP tax). However, each maize balm nets me 9 ToT bags.

From those 9 ToT bags, I get on average: 10 chattering skulls, 10 nougat centers, and 10 plastic fangs (source: ToT bag research on the wiki).

Each of these items are worth 0.37 silver at the merchant, totalling 11.1 silver. So just counting these three items, a total of

11.1 – 1.5 = 9.6 silver per maize balm enters the economy as merchant fodder.

And this is only the out-of-thin-air silver from these three items — there are many other items that come in addition to these.

Considering how popular this farm is (and the fact that we know over 1 million ToT bags have dropped), I’d say a lot of gold has entered the economy because of the maize balm.

It really makes no sense that farming critters > labyrinth zerging > clock tower in terms of rewards. The more effort it takes, the less rewards you get, which isn’t really surprising considering most of the game is like that.

Not just more rewarding than labyrinth and clock tower (does anyone still do it after the PvP change?), it’s the most rewarding farming by far in the entire game right now. You can easily make more than 1 gold a minute and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got 100 gold/hr (I only do it casually, a few runs a day).

The drawback is that it’s incredibly boring and has zero fun factor …the solo version, I mean; I’d imagine the group version can be ok because of the social factor — just like with the QD farm (RIP).

Wasn’t there some announcement recently where Anet bragged about how many millions of ToT bags have dropped? I wouldn’t be surprised if a huge percentage of that is from this farm.

I wonder how much this has/will affect the economy.

Suspension for griefing Maize Balm Farm

So apparently some player was suspended for griefing the maize balm farm:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2l21xk/actually_game_master_can_ban_for_preventing_maize/

The guy repeatedly killed ambients that the farmers had “reserved” for themselves.

Are we to read from this that repeatedly killing champs that champ farmers have “reserved” for themselves is suspension-worthy griefing as well?

…that all those QD champ farmers who were complaining about champs being killed out of order repeatedly were actually the ones in the right?

Personally i’d just say remove disablers all together… I see the thinking behind them, but it has basically ruined the effectiveness and fun from small man groups. 5-10 man group goes to attack NW tower, rams or catas get siege disabled 3 times (2.25 mins/ 135 sec) , then enemy zerg shows up and kills you. Well lets encourage zerging more….

They think getting rid of white swords will fix the siege disabler problem.

Sword changes already affecting game play

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Kuru.3685

Lord Kuru.3685

They haven’t implemented it yet. They want to test it.

My point is, this is already having an affect on game play.

You dont have to put your hands into a fire to see if it burns so testing this is useless too.

They think this will promote defensive play while all people who actually play this game scouting and defending already know its going the other way around. Less defending moar flipping!

What it’s really showing is that WvW players want to ktrain, and this is giving them the chance to do it in WvW instead of EotM.

Too many commanders have relied upon white swords instead of scouts.

Don’t be surprised if those annoying sentry turrets from EotM make their way into WvW.

So you’re volunteering yourself to sit in a tower, waiting, hoping someone will pass by? That’s “gameplay” that you enjoy?

Don’t forget that tower is paper because at night, when there aren’t even enough people to post one at every tower, they all get papered. Actually this’ll be the case outside of 3 hours on either side of primetime.

So if you wander away even for a few minutes, the zerg inevitably shows up and flips your tower.

Actually, I have done it. I’ve done it enough to know that some of the posters here have never done it. When you’re sitting in a tower and someone taps the gate or damages a wall, a three minute “defend” timer pops up on the screen for everyone in the tower/keep. Thirty seconds later white swords would appear on the map.

It doesn’t take long to check on every wall/gate of a keep to see if you need to call in help. If you use siege disablers you can extend the time even longer, even if it’s paper.

And what do you propose people do when there aren’t enough people on the entire map to cover every tower (again, this will be the case pretty much all the time besides a few hours outside primetime… not just in “lower tiers,” but even in T4).

If you don’t have enough people to cover every tower, you don’t have enough people to hold anything on the map.

This is completely false.

Did you consume the potion mid-attack? Sword dmg fluctuates 10% so comparing dmg between 2 different flurries is risky business. Even with such low numbers, 91 should have jumped to 100, not 99.

Drank potions mid-attack on flurry (so half the flurry was with potion and half without), not comparing between two different flurries.

As for 91: potent potion gives +9% damage, 91*1.09 = 99.19, so that looks ok to me.

I just tested using flurry …condi warrior if you’re wondering why the damage is so low

Icebrood troll is Icebrood (potent potion):
104 damage w/ potion —> 96 damage w/o;
91 w/o —> 99 w/

Aldus Stormbringer is Svanir (strong potion):
95 w/o —> 102 w/

Ginva is Icebrood (potent potion):
63 w/o —> 68 w/
81 w/ —> 75 w/o
66 w/o —> 72 w/

I also tested whether Ginva was a Svanir and he’s not.

Numbers match up pretty well with the percentages that the potions give (it seems internal calculations do damage in decimals and are then rounded to integers so the numbers aren’t perfect).

It would be nice if someone else could test also just in case, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t screw up.

It’s up, but even the new stuff is keeping the change when you turn gems into gold, so those of us that liked to do that are still worse off than before.

And yes, a few silver isn’t much, but it can still make a difference.

Cash grab is the only possible explanation. They’re rounding it like this on purpose. Rip a few silver off of each player and it ends up being a lot of gold.

I disagree; reading that post was something of a relief. They aren’t going to issue a permanent change and completely ignore us – they are trying a multi-week test to see how it works. That’s … reasonable. I still don’t think it will work well, but at least they are willing to do a temporary test first.

While I’ve expressed similar sentiments, the question remains open as to how, exactly, they are going to kitten whether the test was a success or failure and how they’ll determine whether to keep the change or revert it back. How are they going to tell if it’s a success or failure? Are they going to poll? Are the people who don’t like it going to have to boycott WvW to express their displeasure? Are they going to look at scores? By what criteria is a change a failure or success?

There’s no need to measure failure or success if your plan is to declare success regardless of outcome. Easy, right?
