People here really think that a thief has more utility than other classes? Seriously? I play mesmer, engineer, necro and thief and the first three classes have way more utility than what a thief can ever archive. Especially a engineer pukes utility skills all over the place.
By the by, I would say that Thief is the second most difficult class to play, especially in PvP..
Thief is one of the easiest classes in this game, go in the mist and try to play necro or engi in a competitive scenario.

You can 1v2 with downed state, as a mesmer I pop one phantasm on the first one that goes down, the damage it does prevents him from healing himself up. No prob

I kill way more people with a S/P build anyway. If I play it right they aren’t able to escape my PW ethier.
On my mesmer I just port out of range followed by a block which stuns you and on my necro you get automaticaly feard if you stun me. Dont see any problem escaping pistolwhip.
i use scepter+sword in pvp and WvW. confusing images is better than blurred frenzy.
A two seconds invunerability every 10 seconds > beam of confusion stacks.
Backstab just hits hard when you hit somebody from behind. If you KNOW a Thief just stealthed on you (and you should recognize the obvious animation), you might want to dodge to a good distance, or perhaps even start spamming Death Blossom since it has an evade (and REALLY makes it hard for them to hit your back)
Remember that when stealthed, it’s often REALLY obvious where you actually are, and you can still be hit. You’re not safe just because you can’t be targeted.
A very good tip for avoiding backstab is the keybind that turns you instantly 180 degree if you spam it its almost impossible to get hit in the back.
Thats why I stopped playing a thief, its just spamming one skill. Especially in tPvP at the very moment the enemy team knows your build they will hard counter you so brutal that you dont have any options left. Its because every thief build is a one trick pony build around one function. My mesmer,necro and engi can still do other stuff well if their main role is countered but as a thief you are basicaly useless.
The initiative system is almost impossible to balance. The abilities are only usefull if they are OP because else theirs no reason to spam them and at the same time you cant make them OP because you can spam it.
Some skills that you can steal from professions are better than elite skills, its actually a borderline OP skill if used right.
3 Orbs and full exotics scales to well with some thief skills.
I play almost only WvW and this happened to me twice since release. Both had exotic gear and the team the played on had all orbs of power.
It might not be so obvious but it also scales to well with burst skills of other classes.

I personaly think that its not a good thing that you can attack enemy towers with trebuchets in stonemist. It makes it to easy to hold and helps conquering enemy territory. Shouldnt SM be something that is hard to hold and does not give you an advantage beside points? The other way around, trebs in towers attacking SM is ok in my book because it makes it harder to hold.
Its not a good decision for the third server to team up with the second one. The third server attacks the second one that already gets attacked by the first one. Its a realistic goal.
From my experience the second server has the most problematic position. The winning server trys to stomp you so you wont have a chance to get his position and the third server wants your position. The third server wont help you attacking the first server because its not a logical decission. Usually the third server will never get enough points to switch places with the first one so why even try it. Trying to stomp the second server that already fights the first one is a realistic goal that you can actually archive.
This leads to the problem that the first server, has the easiest position. This system would only work if all 3 servers would have the same skill level / players at night and thats impossible to archive.
only if you enjoy it’s 5 second cast time that get’s interrupted 100% on any kd, stun, daze.
Well my mesmer has the same problem with moa morph and still its the most hated elite in the game.

Right now if you want badges tag as many people with damage as possible. Use shortbow 2 as a thief to do this. Dont bother with actually killing people, let others do this.
Edit: Rewards for events are no problems I got gold multible times just for reviving people.
Tome of courage is still one of the best elites in PvP.
Many do not seem to understand archivements, archivements should be something you have worked for to show others not something you get automaticaly. This means if you dont want to work for the WvW archivement you are not worth having it. Theirs no reason why someone should have all archivements anyway.
Thieves guild is one of the strongest/most hated elite skills in PvP. Not sure if OP is a troll.
The only way you can obtain rabid gear (thoughness/crit/condition) is through the temple karma vendors in orr. If you play a condition engineer or mesmer you need this gear. Was it intendet that you need to farm 42k karma for one piece of that specific gear which is alot harder to get than every other exotic in the game (beside WvW soldier gear). Oh almost forgot, theirs no chest piece with those stats in the game (mist not counting).
I would love to see WvW exotics with different stats and why is the only way to get rabid (thoughness/condition/crit) gear over a karma vendor in orr???

Mesmers were my easiest target while playing a thief I spammed heart seeker and cut through them like butter. Although I will admit their bird spell needs to be nerfed. Transmognified time is rediculously op.
Killing a mesmer with HS spam? Seriously, you never fought a half decent one.
OP seriously you dont have a clue, not an insult just the honest truth. Your post is about cookie cutter fotm phantasm specced mesmers. A shatter or condition build is way deadlier and alot harder to kill.
Clones are a dispossable source of damage/conditions. Every good mesmer never trys to confuse you with his clones because they assume that you already know whos the real one.
Seriously I play mesmer since bwe1 and I can assure your that mesmers are not a one trick pony that can easily be dealt with if you know how to counter it. If you know the class and play it for longer than 1 week you should realize that you can make builds that are more or less impossible to counter in a 1v1 scenario. Here is a simple, example: If you play a condition/power mesmer you cant just kill the phantasms and win because in the time you do that you get tons of confusion stack applied which forces you to make one of two bad decisions. You can take the confusion damage (which is really high btw) and kill the phantasms or do nothing, avoiding the condition damage, and get hurt by the phantasms (which still hit like a truck). If you add shatter into the mix you get a class that can deal with any situation a 1v1 throws at you.
TL/DR: NO DECENT MESMER CARES IF YOU SPOT THE RIGHT ONE.

I run a shatter/confusion/phantasm hybrid and it works fine. Every buff or “fix” in this threat would make the class even more dominant in PvP.
Spec into shatter and clone spamming its good aoe for farming.
It would be really awesome if you could switch toons in WvW without getting kicked.
From my point of view staff and scepter dont fit the battle mage theme of a mesmer but in the end who cares.
1v1 thief vs guardian
? come on fist he knock back you, second damage third you are almost dead , he kill you and he will rally. So 90% the times I down them and I go away, it should be without this lamer thing such as in all other pvp games as dota, lol … If a.net wish to have a e-sport close to the edge as the other games mention before as to change the some skills.
As a thief you shouldnt complain about the downed state of other professions :P
Is that intended? I realized it when I played a low lvl thief in WvW. When I just spam cluster bombs into a zerg which tickle for lower than 1k damage and basicaly tag every enemy with it I get alot of badges/bags. If I flank the enemy zerg and harass/kill one enemy every 30 seconds, actually be usefull I get almost no bags at all.
Just kill the phantasms. They die pretty easily in AOE. A somewhat durable Ele vs a Mesmer is pretty one sided to the Ele just due to the AOE fields.
I play a sword/sword + scepter/pistol mesmer and I can guarantee you that you wont have the chance to spam one AOE skill on your ele during the whole fight.

Show me your build. Just now tested 3,2k power, 50% crit dmg. ~50%crit chance with 2x+15% illusion dmg. Max crit for golem was 6k.
I think he makes the mistake of thinking that you need to add the numbers up.
Phantasms aren’t pets they are dispossable if you want to play a pet build play necro
Its because some skilled players use a insanly hard to do skill called move 2 steps to the side.
Having multiple phantasms out takes longer than clones. Clones do little to no damage and die with a hit or two. If a mesmer is having lots of phantasms out (which should confuse nobody seen as theyre a white ghost colour) then the mesmer kill is relatively easy.
If a mesmer is spamming clones, you will be able to fight against them for ages due to the lack of dps.
The problem everyone is having is with the clones, but what people realise is they die instantly, and instead of mesmers feeling like god mode, infact people are just getting annoyed that they have to kill so many clones before getting to the real player.
The clone-shatter on my hybrid condition/shatter build hurt as much as the phantasms
I have more ways to avoid pistol whip on my mesmer than the thief has initiative to spam it. No prob.
Sometimes decoy doesnt spawn a clone at all
How to farm badges:
-Buy a arrow cart, build it 2 min bevor the enemy zerg reaches your tower.
-Spam darts
-Collect.
Your list doesnt weight wins, a win or second place against one of the zergiest 24/7 servers is worth more than a win against a server that sucks.
I’ve made several posts about NPCs ignoring stealth. It happens with many player-created NPCs, like turrets, mesmer clones, even ranger pets sometimes. It’s EXTREMELY annoying to a thief that relies on stealth to stay alive.
As for the 1v10 situation described earlier, it sounds like a case of a high-survival specced thief harassing a group of disorganized and undergeared players. This isn’t an issue of the thief class being broken, it’s an issue of one player absolutely capitalizing on his classes’ strengths, and absolutely exploiting the weaknesses of the people he was up against.
Don’t confuse the two.
Mesmer pets dont attack you in stealth, they attack the milisecond when you unstealth, they do the same if you run into their attack range. Its working as intended.
I guess the OP discripes the problem that on a laggy WvW server people often see the unstealhing 2-3 AFTER the thief started to attack. Its a lag issue, people cant target the thief, they get attacked by thin air. You really think it has something to do with skill if you abuse lag? I would call it exploiting.
As mesmer I stealth a little bit later than 1 second after the thief, makes him unstealth bevor I do.
lol ima thief and i do this all the time. He’s either hybrid and does mediocre dmg w/ full set of exotic sets and an awesome pair of weapons, or pure burst dmg which sends fear into you, thus leaving u to hesitate. Mesmers are awesome, they are really good for everything.. You should prolly upgrade your armor or something with that mesmer set that lets you daze them for a longer amount of time and chain ur daze skills. Once doing so, any class including a thief is pretty much dead if they wanna solo u while there’s a group with u.
No its the way lag influences unstealthing in WvW. You can often attack for 2-3 seconds bevor the victim sees something he can target. If you abuse it, like attacking and stealthing again after 3 sec on a laggy WvW server its abuse and they can send in a ticket that a thief expoits stealth lag.

Engineers is (beside mesmers) the least played class, most players dont have any clue what they are talking about. Engi is one of the strongest professions right now, face a good one and you are in a world of hurt.
i actually like this idea, only problem would be the servers and lag (where to host the zones or whatnot, i’m not tech savvy)

I didn’t talk about dying. I talked about how the sudden increase of damage concerns me.
The only damage increase possible is full exotic lvl 80 and having 3 orbs. Glass canon toons with full exotic gear sit on 3000 attack and more and almost or 100% crit.
Im a mesmer too in yellow +3 orange parts gear with balanced offense/defense stats. I have slotet decoy and blink, I almost never die.
Most people that die dont know when they need to get their kitten out of the way of the enemy zerg.
Edit: I dont die as necro too, its just a matter of watching your surounding.

bla bla theirs no free choice, its war. Their are enough other players that actually want to play WvW. You can play PvE everywhere else. You argue like a person that wants to play checkers on a chess table while 100 other people actually want to play chess on that table.
I play on kodash we are a decent “normal” server. Our queues are not full 24/7. We usually win or get the second place versus other normal servers. Everytime we win we get paired with those 24/7 zerg servers like riverside or desolation. They obviously stomp us and the third server involved. So in the end winning is not worth it because our “reward” is fighting ultra-zerg servers which is just frustraiting, especially with one week matches.
I actually met a thief who did 25 k damage with 4x of heartseeker, lovely
No thoughness/vitality gear, maybee in WvW with full exotics + 3 orbs but not, under no circumstances in tPvP will this ever happen.
guardian, ranger, engi, necro dont have any single abilities that burst that hard…
I cant speak for every class but I can burst for 9k + on my engi, and have a skill combo that makes up to 15k+ in 3 seconds.
Whoever doesn’t think this class isn’t OP are completely ignorant, includes the developers. Any class that can keep any other cc’d til death, is pure garbage and so is the game that allows it.
They are way too fast and have way too many outs during combat. Pure crap ezmode is all this is.
No class in this game can CC anyone to death.
When I played a shaman in WoW, I hated Rogues, theykitten me off to no end and I always thought they were an OP class. However after understanding the game better and eventually rolling a Rogue, I realized how much they actually needed their abilities. A Rogue will always kill you 1v1, that’s what they are designed to do. A super glass cannon thief should also be able to kill you 1v1. But a thief who specs with survivability and CD will not kill you very quickly in a 1v1 but they will whittle you down and keep you busy in a 2v1 situation. They may not kill you, but they can keep you occupied long enough. If a glass cannon thief tries to take you on 2v1, he’s dead instantly. If a thief bursts down your friend and he’s glass cannon, simply interrupt his stomp, then revive your friend. He won’t have the initiative or the coolddowns to burst you down too and he’s in a terrible position all of a sudden. His only option is to run away and keep trying the same thing.
You seriously believe that a class should always win 1v1 because its labled rogue or thief? Its not even true, frostmages are the kings of 1v1 in WoW. In gw2 mesmers are the 1v1 champs, actually in every mmorpg I ever played the best 1v1 class was never a rogue/thief whatever.
Especially in a game like gw2 where you choose a profession because of the way how it does something and not because its good/can only do specific things you shouldnt have a “best” 1v1 class at all. Its basically against the design concept of the game.
As a mesmer I have executed dodge rolls, illusions/clones/phantasms and stuns up the whazoo, and the thief never stopped.
As a mesmer you have no excuse if you lose to a hs spamming thief. I normaly dont say L2P but if you lose on a mesmer against a thief that spams heart seeker you seriously need to look at your skills or start to use them.
