Why does gear matter if someone can do content in blue gear while someone in Ascended is struggling? 13% more damage doesn’t matter at all.
No serious gamer would make a statement like this. In a hardcore raiding guild (in another game of course) if you ignored an enchant that boosted your power 1% you would be looked at like you were from Mars by the guild leader and you would be told to get the enchant by raid time. Every experienced player knows that stats matter.

The link is a question I posed in the forums. I want to believe that Colin means it when he says that he wants Ascended gear to be the ceiling. I really do. I don’t want to keep investing my precious gaming time in a game that wants to put me on arbitrary treadmills. I love playing multiple characters. I DON’T Alt. I DON’T have a main character. I play them all and I like to play them multiple ways. It keeps the game fresh. The only option I have to do that with now is playing in sPvP which I love(I have a custom arena) but I love PvE as well. Why would I build switch when I have a weapon and soon to be ascended armor that is WAY more powerful when all combined with ascended jewelry. I play A LOT and I just recently got all ascended gear on all 7 of my level 80 characters. It’s not much of a difference with 1 item here or there but when you mix it with Ascended weapons, armor and all jewelry, the stat differences are major. So now I can’t roll my support type stuff on my Ele? I have to sacrifice my damage set on a toon here or there? I realize that I could just go all damage on all my toons. I totally could! I don’t want to do that though. I want to be able to use different utility skills on my whim. I want to run support skills for dungeons on my Ele, Engie, and Guardian, but I don’t want to ONLY run 1 thing while I GRIND for weeks on end for all of my weapons and armor.
If I could have assurances that Ascended was indeed the ceiling, then I would be cool with it.

I’ll admit I didn’t read the post, however if a good title does its job, I do have something to say:
Ascended is not a new direction in the game. In the PAX interview, Colin said that they always intended for people to put in effort to work towards max gear, however exotics turned out to be much easier to acquire than they anticipated. This is why ascended was released. And there will not be another tier for many years to come. So this is not a new direction for the game at all, just one that they have always been aiming for, but did not execute properly. It will stay at ascended.
Also the increased functionality from ascended is very minimal. You aren’t missing out on much if you stick with exotic. Ascended is meant to be a long term goal to give you the feeling of accomplishment. They are not putting us on a gear grind. Don’t feel like you need ascended right away to succeed. The game has not changed, they have not made it any harder.

I spent about 20g to get weaponsmithing from 400 to 476. Saying it costs 200g is just silly. Stop QQing, start playing, farm those mithril and elder nodes, kill some champs, do some JPs, WvW, dungeons. And you can have it in a month.
Second thing:
Using all 9 weapons of guardian…. why do you need all of them on ascended tier? stat boost is not necessary. It is already easy to play with exotics. Craft only ascended weapon you use 95% of time. Like Greatsword, or Scepter. And craft it to boost your DPS, not base stats. And then play game, have fun… and after sime time you will find out you have another pile of mats to craft second ascended….guys you are like little kids who need their toys right after they are released… stop crying, start playing.. nobody needs ascended now. They are just something you can work on for longer period of time.

I have a much better idea.
Win weekly sPvP tournament and you get SUPER-LEGENDARY for use outside of sPvP for a week.
Or, theres a SUPER-LEGENDARY out there in the world, but if you pick it up, event notice goes up for all players, you become attackable by players (cannot enter instances/change maps) and you can attack other players, you get champion stats and if players kill you they get champ loot.
Grinding 1000000 dragonite ore or 5000 champ bags or w/e elite? rofl

You need exactly 6 weapons to get to level 450 on any crafting discipline, and you can even make a profit selling them, or salvage them for Dark Matter. I won’t go above it until they “fix” the Ascended recipies and make them reward exp beyond 450, it’s silly that it doesn’t.
So your plan to craft an Ascended weapon with a freshly level 80 alt includes getting enough mats out of nowhere to craft 6 exotics, and then waiting for ANet to nerf the costs themselves because you say so?

No. I said you will have enough materials to craft an Ascended Weapon not that your fresh level 80 alt will enough materials to get to 500 Weaponsmithing. I never included getting to 500 Weaponsmithing in my calculations.
500 Weaponsmithing is “account bound” you need it only once on your entire account, so I guess I can somewhat justify the cost, it’s a big overhead cost for getting your very first Ascended Weapon but after that it will cost you nothing, you don’t lose crafting levels. Does it have a ridiculous cost? Yes it does I never said otherwise.
As for me waiting for them to nerf the cost, how does it make sense to still get experience from a level 400 recipe but not get experience from a level 450 recipe?
Ah, so if you go out of your way during leveling, and level “properly?” you might get enough mats to maybe craft 1 weapon. Nevermind that you cant level your craft to actually craft it, level another 5 crafts, or another 33 gear pieces you will need just for 1 character 1 build.

Seeing a zerg train waiting patiently at the camp till the enemy group finishes flipping it, or hearing voices “don’t reinforce walls or build siege, we want them to be able to take it” in chat is something i see quite often now – and it has started only after people counted how much dragonite and empyreals they are going to need.Yes that’s a big issue. I guess people will always put their personal “loot” above anything else.
Its behavior thats direct consequence of ascended weapons. When you introduce completely conflicting goals, those which seem more important take precedence.

The problem is that ArenaNet needs to keep players active enough to spend money in their cash shop. That’s what puts bread on their tables. For PvP and WvW players there’s plenty of things to do, but for PvE players there’s nothing to do.
I think it’s safe now to say that their dungeons have utterly failed to provide anything interesting to chew on for serious PvE players. People that do them just want the gear and use exploits, 5x berserker teams and cheats to skip as many bosses and be done with the dungeon ASAP, and when Arenanet tried to fix one dungeon (AC) the players found the dungeon annoying and just stopped running it. And I don’t have the impression that fractals have been immensely popular either.
A lot of focused PvE players got to level 80 and then quit because there was nothing else to do. Events are too easy to pose a challenge, dungeons have huge design issues, world champions and other really hard mobs to solo had no rewards (back then), there was just nothing to do it you don’t want to PvP.
Adding ascended weapons (and later armors) introduces a new goal that is going to take a very long time to fulfill. This will keep players active and busy for a long time, and that gives the game a larger pool of players that could potentially spend money in the cash shop. Personally I think it’s a little silly and even hazardous for the game that ascended gear has to have better stats than exotics, and on top of that the devs look a little funny to go 180 on their word, but I sure am glad that there is something to do as a PvE player. I haven’t played the game from April to last August because I just had nothing to do. Now, at least, I have a reason to log in and play. I just wished my gear wasn’t deprecated…

Last time I checked, you needed 500 in a craft for a weapon. It costs around 180-200g in materials to do 400->500 even counting the money you get back by selling the stuff you craft which is partly stupid since you need to disassemble them to get one of the components for Ascended.

13% gets multiplied when those small attacks from a zerg start impacting you.
You can down your target faster allowing you to be more useful to your zerg or get killed 13% faster and be a liability to your zerg. When Ascended Armor gets added to the mix now people have higher toughness and vitality thresholds for you to overcome in your yellows or oranges. If your zerg can’t overcome this threshold you will lose the war of attrition.
Ask any WvW commander if they would rather lead a zerg of 40 people in full exotics against an equally skilled and classed zerg of 40 people in fully optimized Ascended gear.
It all doesnt matter because you can pwn bads with no gear at all apparently.

First of all, there are people doing naked runs of dungeons (absolutely no armor, only weapons), there are people soloing AC/CM/TA at their intended levels, without access to Ascended or even Exotic items. I’ve seen a level 24 Necromancer doing 30+ fotm, it was fun and “unique”. Overall, Ascended gear, and really ANY type of gear isn’t required at all, provided you have enough skill to compensate for the lack of it. I doubt Ascended gear can make much of a difference in large scale WvW battles or sieges either, there are siege weapons to be used, and I’d take a properly built (skill-wise) team mate using greens (for example a support Guardian with a Staff) over a bs Thief in a large scale battle.
As I’ve said in multiple posts, if you are doing a variety things (like, everything in the game) you can get an Ascended Weapon without ever doing the same thing twice.

Played wvw every day since this new stuff came out, current total Drag it out ore 53.
Remind me how many I need for even one weapon?
Didn’t capture a single keep or SM in wvw today, so a total of 0 drag ores. They don’t drop from camps or towers. If there isn’t a lot of action or one server is dominating and it isn’t yours, then the chances of getting even one keep during 2-3 hours of game time is pretty slim.
Have passed 1000 of the other material and almost 200 of the other, but drag it out is going to be a real pain.
Why they had to go and make this so alt-unfriendly by making all the drops account bound is beyond me- but then as they think wvw ranks should be character bound I shouldn’t really have been at all surprised.
At the current rate it will take well over a month (or two) to craft one weapon, need 3 for my engi, 4 for my ranger and 3 for my necro as an absolute minimum (although usually I run alternative builds too). That’s 10-20 months just for the main three, and only if I can face running around kissing nodes for the rest of my life.
They did manage to suck all the fun out of the game, ill give them that.

This new system gives you the same chance to give you the stats+weapon combo you want as the system for getting Ascended rings from fractals.
- Ascended rings from fractals: You get a ring, which you definitely can use, with a random stat.
- Ascended weapons: You get a weapon that you definitely can use (as you choose it), with a random stat.
Consider all those people who complained about their banks being filled with useless Ascended fractal rings. This is the same thing in terms of probability of getting what you want.
So Anet learned nothing from the Ascended rings complaints (or chose to ignore).
Oh, no, no, since probably drop rate on thses boxes is much lower than rings, players wont run into such problems ;P

They listened to the whiners, and thus ascended gear (and everything in the game since then).

It was fun while it lasted. One year. Now we have our grind-for-stats-til’-you-get-to-the-fun-part style of MMO. Everybody could get a full equipment of exotics in a decent amount of time. Now we got Karma Nerf and crafting grind. The daily checklist isn’t fun. I guess I follow the people of the six guilds I was in.

i do not mind and sometimes enjoy grinding in games where it feels rewarding
in GW2, however, i don’t feel like there’s much of an incentive to do so. meanwhile, it is growing more designed to be that way, which causes conflict as the incentive is not present

Was I ever wrong. Seriously would never have believed this much QQ could be spewed out because of “grinding”. Don’t want to make it? Then don’t make it. Want to be the best? Then do something in order to deserve to be the best. Easy logics.

It’s not silly. You’re just looking at this from a narrow and selective point of view.
What in ANY MMO is not repetitive? Combat? Check. Drops? Check.
Everything you kill in an MMO gives you a drop. If you kill stuff you get drops. Simple logic. Therefore, everything you do could be considered farming…but it’s not. Because farming is a very specific activity. It’s done with intent.
If I stand in one place and kill something, because I’m trying to get drops then I’m farming.
The only thing I could be accused of farming is achievement points. I like achievements and I go for them. As an end result, I often get drops, but I’m not going for the drops.
I can’t think of any game in ANY genre that doesn’t have repetitive play. Pinball machines have repetitive play…but I’m not farming when I play pinball. Baseball have repetitive play. But I’m not farming when I’m playing baseball.
Chess has repetitive play. The game itself is repetitive. You seem similar opening and similar end games all the time….but not one says chess is farming.
The only games that may not have repetitive play are sand box games, like mine craft…and even that can be considered repetitive, since you’re just gathering and building.
There’s no game that doesn’t have repetitive play.
So what is farming, exactly? It’s doing something repetitive with the intention of getting a specific reward. You farm mats. You farm karma. You farm rep (in other games). That’s farming.
Playing the game, repetitive or not, isn’t farming… because the focus isn’t on what you’re gathering it’s on something else.
Otherwise, you could say that Babe Ruth farmed runs.
But Ruth here intentionally did runs to get a reward, so by your own definition he farmed those

while spending 2 hours doing nothing but mining iron and empyreals tonight … that feel of massive grind hit me pretty hard. Hope it goes away… but when I look at the amounts need just for … say Deld & Spiritwood … I realy have to ask…. WHY? WHY so many of these lower level mats needed? That’s not gonna get people to play together. Not if they’re spending all their time chasing this junk which pretty much requires you to solo in a really super “FOREVER ALONE” fashion…
It’s really doing the opposite of what it should have done. Just feels like a kneejerk reactions to their huge mistakes on allowing inflation to get so bad in the first place
Noooo, you need just 450 mithril ingots or 550 planks and hundred(s) or so of other stuff, you get that by just logging in for 10 minutes/day to craft apparently
Still, IF they want to enforce this, stats on ascended should be interchangable like legendaries, ok, its a grind to level up 3 weapon crafting skills, its a grind to get just 1 weapon, let alone all weapons you need for various characters/builds but it would at least be done when you finally do.
And yes, a bit more firmer standpoint of no more tiers.

I’m a casual player who plays a lot of hours, but I never grind. I just do what I think is fun, when I think it’s fun. Somehow, I get achievements, gold and karma…without grinding. I don’t know how. I just play the game.
I always found this post rather suspect.

I am glad people agree with me here. Everytime I see, this is imba, this is too OP, this is that, it’s generally from the spvp crowd. And I know I am casting a broad stroke here, but if they want things to be truly equal, maybe they should force spvpers to work just as hard to get gear, work just as kitten the new crafting cap to get ascended weapons, and work just as hard to farm mats to stay competitive…then let’s see how eager they will be to ask for nerfs for a specific class/build.
Ahhh, but game was designed with diffrent type of gameplay in mind altogether, where top gear is easy to get in multiple ways, experimentation with different classes/builds is not only welcomed but encouraged, so your whole “problem” is non existant.
Changing their minds on it 2 months after release cannot magically erase design that was developed for 5 years.
You just nailed one of the reasons why introducing new tier of gear, especially in abbysmal rushed way it was introduced is kitten ing some of us off and a very bad idea.
They are literally asking us to spend months “working” on something that can turn to trash in 1 patch. Because game wasnt designed or envisioned that way.

I object to the fact that ascended is an unnecessary gear tier (no content that requires it except high fractals) except of course WvW and WvW would not require ascended if the gear did not exist. Until they introduced Ascended weapons Legendaries were just ‘ooh pretty fluff content’ now as it turns out they are the most powerful weapons in the game making the ones of us that did not bother because we dont do fluff very disadvantaged.
Then explain to me how I am running around in WvW just fine with rares. It is not that much of a grind. I am 1/4 the way there and only because I am doing things slowly. I wish I had more time to dedicate to the game. Then I would run a test to see how easy it is to get ascended if you just leveled up your crafting while playing and saving all mats.
I seriously think the biggest problem is this. We are all level 80’s so we are mostly starting from ground 0 when if this was released at launch we would be most of the way done with gathering all of our mats if we played the game normally.

If the gear is not required for anything, why even have it at all?
Specifically to cater to the subset of players who like that sort of thing, or even feel like they need it to have a compelling reason to play.
To be sure, I’d prefer it did not exist- but my personal desires extend much further than that. I’d prefer there were no stats tied to tiers of gear at all, no leveling up in the traditional sense; essentially no vertical progression of any kind from minute one. But I also understand that this is a fairly extreme position not held by the majority of people who play online games, and don’t consider it realistic. It’s not hard for me to understand why Ascended gear was added to this game, but it is hard for me to be bothered by it, because the implementation is such that it will impact me personally in a very, very tiny way if at all.
Would you prefer that it were required? :-/

I can’t believe that Orr is alive again! Can you believe that?! That dead island is blooming with life! People fighting avatars, champions, doing group events! And it gets worse… I’m meeting people all over the world! They are doing jumping puzzles mini dungeons and group events just everywhere! And the game feels alive… That must stop!
The worst thing is that they are using their crafting professions again! The same thing that they’ve used only to level up their characters! Horror!
And the WvW went from being absolutely and horribly imbalanced to absolutely and horribly imbalanced! That’s outrageous!

In my opinion, ascended gear was the best thing that happened to this game, whether the general population likes it or not. It made people go out into the world and farm for materials, and made them farm not only champions, but dragon bosses, dungeons, jumping puzzles, and everything else. Not only that, but it gave me incentive to actually level up my crafting, which I never had the desire to level up before.

by the time i reached 80lvl i had not more than 7-8g. I was farming all stuff which i saw during my leveling. I do not know from where you got 30g, but only after clockwork farming during 2 weeks i got about 100g.

A lot (i would say most) of people dont care. PvE is so easy that you can slap random combination of gear and still be succesful with little skill. And theyll just play the game until it starts to interfere to much with their playing and then quit.

Maybe actually go away and play another game seeing as this is so game-breaking for you and you being hell-bent on insisting another tier of gear that isn’t announced is incoming, in particular since Anet have gone out of their way in several channels lately to say, no we’d rather do something else to not do that again.
They know Ascended gear wasn’t appreciated when introduced in November, but they did say back then it would be trinkets, weapons and armor, to fill the gap because exotics became a much too easily acquirable tier of gear. Ascended gear isn’t… you do the maths on crafting it now; they got the tier that I think they originally intended Exotics to be, with only the Legendary being more time-consuming. People raged back then; it’s just really silly to see the same rage when the rest of the ascended gear now does get released over half a year later… didn’t you critics kitten enough about it back in November – in fact, didn’t half of you quit and swear to never come back…
I’m fine with the change as it stands now; I’ll be really surprised if the do add more levels but if they were to, I’d be very interested to see the justification. But I remain firm in my belief Anet stay true to their words now.

All the while having fun playing the game when I feel like it and not playing when I don’t.
I guess this is where we differ. If I don’t like something I stay away from it. It seems to me that you tend to gravitate towards things you dislike, which I find kind of odd.
