I’d rather have a floating glowing emblem appearing in the back using the shield/backpack model slot, that you can apply to any chest armor, instead a fixed set of a few models with the emblem put into them, that limits your appearance.

Or some kind of banner you can wear strapped in your back, much like warriors banners. Or decorative shields with the emblem on them, and you never use.

I guess I’ll have to wait until capes are ready.

Weapon Scaling When Sheathing/Unsheathing

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

This very noticeable when playing as an asura, but then again, this is a fantasy game, and asura could easily have made devices to alter the space around them so weapons become smaller when holstered, or some kind of attachment they quickly put on equipped weapons so they become smaller when sheathed.

This isn’t weirder than a weapon becoming huge in the hands of a Norn, but tiny in the hands of an Asura. It just happens in the same model instead across models.

Just imagine Sun Wukong’s staff, smaller than a toothpick when not in use, huge like a tower if the user so desires.

Make karma account wide?

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

Karma, like skill points, are part of the character’s progress.

As much as may of us would love to have that, this would defeat its purpose.

If you ask me, I’d just have all gold and karma shared account-wide, removing bank gold altogether.

But since you can already share anything you can acquire with karma that they intent to have shared (e.g.: recipes, ingredients) they’ll probably never do something like that.

Unlike dungeon tokens, for a character to get something with karma, that character must deserve it.

It would have to be non-instanced events.

Norn keg brawl doesn’t seem to bring many people, and anyone that does to do that won’t be around.

City-wide events that make people walk all over the city like “Find the lost pets”, “root out the infiltrators/spies” or “play hide and seek with the cubs/kids/children/saplings/progeny” would work better.

Race Changes

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

When you get racial skills, the engineer counterparts get unlocked even if you are not engineer.
And races share armor visuals across professions, so you can preview any item in any character, even if their profession cannot equip that item.

This means that changing profession should be relatively easy. Provided there’s a way to ‘save’ the unlocked skills just in case you want to go back, and that you’ll have to unlock the new skills.

But race is not the same, as race is linked to your personal story.
Even if you made something up like chaos energy turning you into another race permanently to explain it in lore, then you’ll have to go on with the persona story with a different voice, unless you kept your original voice, and then we’ll have things like an Asura with Charr voice…

Too many complications.

Then you could simply start the story from scratch, but for that there’s already new character slots.

Pointy hats are unpractical and ridiculous.

Have you ever tried to dodgeroll with a pointy hat? You could poke someone’s eye out.

And well, a Charr with tiny feathered hat is bad enough. Try to imagine a pointy hat…
Brrrrr!

A slightly pointed hat, that is something like a mix between a cowboy hat and a wizard hat, like Diablo III’s Wanderer hat, though, would be acceptable.

[…]The game could really use a dedicated healer […]

Looks like someone arrived late to the party…
http://www.arena.net/blog/?s=trinity

The game will NEVER have a dedicated healer.
It was one of the worst mistakes they had in GW1. Dedicated healer created a boring gameplay focused on looking at healthbars, and an arms race that increasingly pitted healing against spike damage, until there was both too much damage and too much healing, and balancing the kitten thing became hell.

In GW2, builds do not have a fixed purpose. They can’t do everything, but they can do a few things.
If you set yourself to water, it won’t be just to heal. You will always damage, and then there’s some water ‘snaring’ and crowd control.

Unfortunately, action and platform games can’t be made with people with disabilities in mind. They required fast-paced action that quite often can’t be achieved with certain disabilities.

You are lucky this is Guild Wars, in many other games, you’ll receive a negative, immature response, and possibly silence from the developers, as they’ll rather say nothing over giving the bad news, that could be perceived negatively when it’s just the sad truth.

I recommend you enlist the help of friends in these one-time-thing situations.

Get rid of the downleveling system or limit it

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

20 levels would be way too much.

3 levels above the creature already makes you way stronger than them.

You can try it in Ashford with the harpies. If you go all the way north, you’ll get downleveled just to level 13-14, but harpies around there are level 8-9.

Killing them takes just a couple of hits to level 40 people with level 35…40 fine/masterwork gear.
And that is as trivial as killing enemies should get.

No matter how good you get, an enemy must always be able to kill you if you get distracted, go AFK or doze off.
What you suggest would allow things like water elementalist or any guardian to stand still doing nothing while enemies hit, thanks to their regen and the little damage they’ll take.

This has been already done, and it’s therefore, still possible.

I bet that it’ll be even possible to replicate the leveling up, getting more skills as the character kills, although I don’t see it necessary, and GW2 skills and combat mechanics could be used instead.

At least as an experimental map in the sPvP rotation could prove really interesting, with two sides, towers that deal increased damage to players, ‘creeps’ that spawn in waves and structures to protect instead areas to capture.

this has no place in GW

Allow me illuminate you with the wisdom of experience:

Engineer Turrets

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

Turrent recharge when picked up should depend on its health. With full health it should be minimal or even no cooldown at all, while destruction would give full recharge.

This will also make the wrnch more useful, and a valid option compared to the turrent self-healing trait.

Of course, to balance things out, the turret-self healing would give additional recharge to turrets, something like +10s, since with it it’s more likely to pick them with full health.

Fire Elemental at Thaumanova Reactor

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

[…]

We know all of that.
Everyone does.

Let’s see those pointers:

  • if someone is completely down, ignore them (you’ll also go down)
This should NEVER be something you are supposed to do. It’s true that there’s time to revive and times to void doing so, but in this event, more than 9 out of 10 times you try to revive someone, you are knocked down and killed in less than 3 seconds.
Anywhere else I’ve been able to revive people under fire by popping an Arcane Shield followed by Obsidian Flesh, you can’t do that here.
  • if you go completely down, run back (don’t be upset no one rezzed you)
Corpse-throwing tactics are not something anyone should do either. The point of a combat-oriented action game is to stay alive, unless you are something like compsognathus in Dino D-Day or a boomer in L4D, but there’s no professions like that in GW2 (there were necrobombers in GW1, but those were an aberration)
  • you can skirt the red circles by a hair and not get hit – position your camera high up over your head so you can see them easy
You can’t. The red circles appear late, and hit outside their area. If your character model is very big, like a tall norn or charr, this gets worse. 1/4 second of lag, and you are down, as you won’t see the circle in time.
  • if you do get hit, run across the bridge until you’re out of combat and heal up. The burn can easily kill you
If you get hit, you are dead. I’ve seen the thing one-hit killing level 80 players with level 80 blue&green gear. The burn WILL kill you, I even tried traiting to lose burning when dodging. It gets instantly re-applied when leaving on of those killer circles. And often there’s more than one of them, plus countless AoEs from Embers.
  • if you can, run in (avoiding the circles) and don’t hit any embers to focus the boss
That’ll give you about 5-20 hits before the embers focus on you. And that’s only if there’s at least 3 other people around. And since you can’t deal 20 hits in the time it takes for them to die, let’s make it 10 tops.
10 hits, and then you ether run like hell to recover or get downed. Or get downed while trying to run away.
  • you can stand right next to the boss (melee) IN the big flames and not get hurt – but the second you start taking damage, GET OUT (and across the bridge), you’re in an ember’s ground aoe and now have a burning DOT
This doesn’t work. I tried that. Embers focus more on those that are in there.
Also, right around the elementalist the killer running flares spawn. There’s no visual cue indicating they’ll come out from the main body of elemental they just pop around, so in your way to ‘inside’ one often spawns right there, and you’ll hit without even seeing what hit you. And those things down anything they touch.
  • if you want to go after embers (too many are in the area and need culling) do it but be prepared to run out and dont go after the boss while going after embers at the same time
They’ll get quickly revived. If the number goes down, the next killer circle will spawn one.
  • dodge the flames that run along the ground – the burning will kill you – if you get hit, run across the bridge until you’re out of combat and heal up
That’s easier said than done. Each ember can spam more than 4 AoEs every 5 seconds or so, and they start right away, without a warning. Getting out of one i’s easy, and you get little damage. But here, when you dodge one, you’ll fall into 4 that started right after you dodged. And last time I tried, you could not dodge mid-dodge.
  • if you get hit by an ember (knocked down) use your anti-CC abilities and then run across the bridge
Unfortunately, even if you use stability and get away, the burning and damage will kill you anyways, even if you also bring condition removal.
And it doesn’t matter if you are able to get away. You’ll have to go back in to deal more damage, so you’ll have to wait for those to recharge (stability and condition removal skills have the slowest recharges), completely breaking the pace of the battle.

All of those, ALL of them, would be solved if none of its attack dealt more than 33…50% of the HP of the average level 15 player with level 15 gear that visits the event, and each ember could create only a single AoE every 5 seconds at most.

Rename the Engineer

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

A Tyrian engineer does.

The Engineer in FF6 did weirder things, like jumping all over the enemies with a chainsaw, or confusing the with a huge loudspeaker.

Quoting the wikipedia:
“An engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, social and economic problems. Engineers design materials, structures and systems while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, safety and cost. The word engineer is derived from the Latin roots ingeniare (”to contrive, devise") and ingenium (“cleverness”)."

So “Engineer” fits the name.

The point of the engineer is that he’s the one that made all those gizmos, machines, devices, items and apparatuses. And instead selling them or giving them to others, he gets all the fun.

Although, it’ll be nice if Engineers were able to give kits with a limited number of uses to other players, much like elementalists give conjured weapons.

Dragon Timers:

in Suggestions

Posted by: MithranArkanere.8957

MithranArkanere.8957

Events ARE dynamic. Once defeated, they will have a cooldown time, but after that time passes, previous events must happen before they spawn.

The thing is, there’s always people around those places, and events are completed quite fast, so the dragons appear at seemingly fixed times, but they do not spawn at fixed times.

People keep asking “when is the dragon up” because they are used o other games in which bosses spawn at fixed times, and they are both lazy and greedy, so they want to appear when the dragon appears, hit a little, grab the chest, and go to the next dragon to grab another chest, ignoring any other events in the area.

That’s what must be fixed.

So, instead a silly timer that will only enforce the false assumption that they spawn at fixed times, what should be made is so you must have done at least one of the previous events to open the chest, and increase the quality of the drops the more previous events you have completed.

That’ll serve all those lazy and greedy leechers right.

Yeah. If you are in a low level area laying with friends, you might find you that they can travel all over the place freely, since hey get enough for waypoints with a couple of drops, but you’ll have to walk after a while, until you have been in higher level areas saving for waypoints beforeand.

A situation in which you have to farm to play normally should NEVER happen.

This solution would require to give each waypoint a level, much like hearts, but it’s the best one I’ve seen so far. If you come from a high level area, you should have killed something and get a couple of drops to play. If you are going to a high level area, what you spend you should recover fairly fast.

Anyways, please don’t make joke suggestion threads. Lots of good suggestions that people should see are getting buried with all the clutter.

This was initially created for posters in the Steam forums a long time ago, but I believe its wisdom can be applied to all forums, and transcends time.

Norn shapeshift forms for roleplaying purposes

Sometimes lore makes rules, but often rules also make lore.

Norns can’t hold their form indefinitely. Svanir was the only one that has ever seen holding his form, and it was because of Jormag’s liutenant’s icy corruption.

If you roleplay as a Norn that shapeshifts, it would make sense to follow Norn rules, and don’t hold the form permanently, because very nasty things may happen if you do that. And we don’t want those very nasty things to happen.

Skritt often have bottles in their backs. I’ve seen humans with some backpacks. Several charr have something like a briefcase strapped with belts to the back. Some silvary have wing-like sprouts.

All of those could be nice as backpacks.

They should make a tinker crafting profession, able to make them (also able to craft environmental weapons, techno-gizmo headgears like googles and monocles and breathing apparatuses). Plus put some of them in some Heart karma merchants, and at least one in each dungeon and cultural armorsmith.

It may seem annoying but they are there so you think ahead, and pay attention to your conditions. They can be seen both as icons and as changes in your character.

Out in the wild, you are not fighting just that one monster. You have to watch for other enemies that may appear around, and the battle may take longer.

It would be nice if both skills and conditions decreased faster once it’s sure there’s no enemies around, but when here’s still enemies within range, it’s on.

ArenaNet did not break away from the "kill 10 rats" quest structure.

Well, the main focus of the game is still action and combat.

There’s a quite some events with more than one thing to do, like the bandit attack in which you can kill bandits, but you can also water the bales.

More of that could be nice, but the kill X Y will still happen.

It’s just that instead having to go were the Y spawn and kill X of them, you accompany an NPC to where the Y are, and kill X of them until a bar is filled. And once the chore is done, maybe there’s something else to do, so you keep following the NPC.

Assigning Items to Bags, etc.

Yeah. That is annoying.

At least they should let you keep the offhand item in the slot like in GW1.
If you equipped a 2H weapon, the offhand weapon stays there, with a Forbidden symbol over it, indicating it’s not in use.

That way, if you change to a 1H weapon, you get the offhand back there instantly.
If you change to a 2H weapon, the offhand won’t randomly move somewhere else in the inventory, it’ll stay in the offhand slot, just disabled.

Combat, Dynamic Events... what's the point if they're easy mode?

It’s not ‘dumbing down’ as much as ‘adjusting to mass mind’. Anyone that has ever studied social behavior will tell you how it changes depending on number of people. The crowd is dumb.

You can’t imagine how many times I’ve tried explaining to people that events do not happen exactly ever X time, but depending in previous events and other factors.
But even if a single individual listens, the mass won’t. Because the mass is composed by many people. Some that have heard of it, some that just ignore it, some that hear of it and won’t believe it…

If we make an analogy with ‘objectives’ being glasses, and fulling them putting a ping pong ball inside of each, glass:
In the end, massive events will be like a room filled with mousetraps with ping pong balls in them. Some ping pong balls will end up in the glasses, each glass may end up with an ping pong ball, but it won’t be as much as a collective effort as a trial and error on the spot, with people mindlessly running around, ad maybe one or two players actually trying to give order to chaos.
And separate instances of less people would be like actually having someone aiming for the glass.

Note that with ‘separate instances’ for extra battles I don’t mean just 5 people like in dungeons. But something more like squads, or guilds, or 5 parties banding together. All informed by others and with a more or less accurate idea of what they are supposed to do, or at least who are they supposed to follow and obey.
It’s like taking a huge boss battle, making it harder not by rising numbers, but by adding more complex mechanics, and instancing it.

The problem with massive events is that pople tend to do the same, even if you give them multiple options.

Put something required to beat the boss, like shooting a cannon, and you may get things like a bunch of griefers hogging the cannon, and not using it.
Ad complex sequences required to beat the boss, like defeating enemies in certain order, and you will still get people mindlessly attacking.
I’ve seen a guy attacking a Determined creature for 15 minutes. >_<.

Overcomplicating things is never a good idea for massive fights, as even if you may make it interesting for many people, it may become impossible for others, and overall it won’t work.

That’s why a difficulty adjustment that is more on the side of the player than on the side of the monster works better for massive events.

Now, when it comes to non-personal instances and dungeons, there you can put the good stuff.

Maybe there should be some kind of partial mini-instances, smaller than dungeons, big enough for a decent boss fight, and people can enter in smaller groups. Like organizing themselves in squads, or joining several parties or something, for example a rift opening after capturing a God shrine.
Save the chaos, serging and marabuntas for massive world battles, and the complex, better rewarded and harder stuff stuff for instances.
