It’s soulbound on acquire, not equip. The skin can still be used, though: transmute to white, move to new char…has to be same race though.
Otherwise, write off $50.
I always liked the GW2 version of LA…
The next version will be built from scavenged airships!
I’d be quite happy if all the interesting Black Lion skins weren’t so insanely expensive AND random to acquire. I don’t have a problem with most gem store items, but those are insane.
f capturing a keep gave 5 gold and big karma to share among all participants, you’d see a lot less zergs and more organized teams.
You’d see nothing but players organizing to trade keeps back and forth as fast as possible.
Nothing proposed so far addresses the issue that active defence minimizes the value of defensive stats. (You don’t need armor if you dodge the attack, or neutralize it via a utility skill.) And if enemies basically do periodic, big attacks instead of constant small ones, you tend to always have an active defense ready.
But re-designing every enemy in the game is a HUGE task – not just coding, but re-testing and re-balancing. It just won’t happen.
So really, all they can do is to buff the defensive stats to make them more attractive. Maybe vitality should reduce condition duration, for example.
The more there is to do for one character, the harder it is to get alts up to speed.
GW1, STO – these are games where it is easy to get alts up to a decent level of performance, if not absolutely maxed out. GW2 isn’t too bad, really, compared to most MMOs.
And I don’t agree that WoW is more alt-friendly than GW2…at least until they let you buy level 90 characters, lol.
Great map!
Easy to fall off, though – I actually went out a gate exit and fell off the map because the outside ledge was so small.
Underneath they should have the ‘Lake of Tears’ to fall into…
It’ll just be the fountain. They always destroy the fountain…
I have all 8 classes, but only 4 level 80s, so YMMV.
Guardian is the easiest to play, and pretty fun.
Warrior is good fun, but simple.
Necro and Ele are not much fun, IMO.
Ranger is fun in PvE, but terrible in WvW.
Engineer is a blast – use an asura for extra giggles.
Thief is very fun but risky, i.e. requires most concentration. A good mix of range and melee, however.
Mesmer is my least played and I haven’t got a good feel for it yet.
Leveling is pretty fun in this game, but I wouldn’t mind a way to jump alts to 80. After leveling 4 characters to 80, I’m somewhat indifferent to doing it again.
Otherwise I think they’ve done a pretty good job about deciding what is account-bound vs character-bound. Except crafters should be able to sell ascended gear.
More to the point, what is its purpose in the event? It isn’t the Marionette that actually shoots at everyone in the final (fail) cutscene, so why does it exist?
A test of how viable giant high heels are?
And why are the platforms there? Can the weapon only be used if you pre-build platforms at the target site?
And I hope they re-name the personality trait ‘ferocity’ to ‘forcefulness’ or something to avoid confusion. kthxbye.
Rangers ought to reverse the normal paradigm, and do more damage with ranged weapons and less with melee weapons. Otherwise, bows will never be the best choice for a ranger.
A game that actually does grinding well is StarTrek Online. There is a ‘reputation’ system that allows you to make steady progress towards various rewards, and the initial steps are quite easy. Basically, no RNG at all.
Here, the results are very uncertain except for dungeon runs.
If there were (good) rewards for defending, people would figure out how to defend.
But the way for players to maximize rewards is to trade objectives back and forth by zerging, so of course they do.
Simple solution: Nerf all ascended weapons back to exotic level.
ducks for cover
My second level 80 was a ranger; my main in GW1 was a ranger… but I have to admit, rangers are bad in WvW.
Rangers need to be given the firepower of arrow carts…
I can’t wait for the chance to ally with Scarlet against all those Marionette-bashers…
:)
Oddly, the notion that there is content in the game that I might never see doesn’t make be unhappy, in fact I’m glad it’s there.
Who wants a world with no challenges left?
As far as setting these events in level 80 zones – that would be harder on players with less than perfect gear, since the differences would be maximized.
Have a grizzled veteran in a wheelchair throwing wrenches.
“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a warden.”
The Mystic Forge – a wholly owned subsidiary of Scarlet Enterprises. With offshore bank accounts on Southsun Cove.
This is why the Elder dragons, who work for Greenpeace, are trying to wipe you all out. Notice that they recycle – bodies.
Ehm I hate to break this to a lot of people; but how can you call items like this P2W when you can directly convert RL money to ingame money? You can already get everything you could possibly want if you’re willing to pay for it.
The distinction is that other items can be acquired in two ways, either in-game, which requires time, or by paying. The argument is that now you can pay for something that is not otherwise obtainable in-game. (Which isn’t really true, I’d say, so this is really still ‘convenience’.)
My observation is that the first two wardens go down in most cases, then people start having problems.
Warden 3 is easy to do, but also easy to fail.
If you get at least 3 wardens down in the first round of lanes, you’ll probably win.
Guardian was the 4th class I got to 80. It is so much better than the others (for PvE) it is amazing.
There is nothing special about overflows, and no reason they can’t so as well as any other server, unless it is the ‘last’ overflow and is only partially filled. Which, again, could happen on any server. So I don’t get the complaint.
I’d like to see it made permanent as an instance… reached via some form of historical flashback, perhaps – put a marker in Lornars Pass to go to it.
Pads that win should be able to get to other pads to help.
Hmmm. Off the top of my head, each lockbox key costs 5 gold (at the normal gem→gold rate).
20% of a scrap means 5 boxes to get one, or 25 gold per scrap.
Have fun with that.
Zergs are good in limited doses…good mindless fun.
But for actual gameplay, the instanced missions of GW1 were far more challenging and interesting.
I have no problem with people soloing dungeons, but I would lock party composition for the entire run. (Yes, I realize you might be short when people leave. Too bad.)
And if people AFK’d – there are already mechanisms for tracking contribution.
Suspicion:
Many computer programs that produce (pseudo-)random numbers are based off of the clock.
I suspect GW2 has such a program for loot, because I often notice multiple people getting good loot when a large zerg all opens bags at about the same time.
(This doesn’t tell you when to open loot bags, but it is interesting.)
The potential for griefing would be insane.
Possibly. But this is a game with jumping, teleports… and you could turn it off in towns.
Here’s an alternate take…what GW2 needs is not tanking, but body-blocking.
Think about it…if you could physically block enemies, you could ‘tank’ – and it would take skill rather than some artificial mechanism.
(Also, it would eliminate the silly stacking in dungeons and zergs.)
Meh.

Tanking is the flawed mechanic that allows the traditional trinity, and it would require re-engineering every enemy in the game to implement, so not likely.
Doing some crafting is a good way to accelerate leveling, especially after your first character, when you’ve built some inventory of materials. If you do 2 skills, you might gain up to 20 levels.
Dead easy way to show that there is a grind in a non grindy game:
My friend starts playing, gets to 80, gears up (a grind in itself but let’s not talk about that part).
Finds he’s quite good at the game. Wants to tackle high level fractals, doesn’t care for the easymode low level ones.
Jumps in high level. Agony kills him.
I tell him to go farm laurels/trinkets/commendations, some hundreds of gold for the backpiece, and maybe some ascended gear if he doesn’t want to be instagibbed by the final boss using agony.
Friend asks “what happened to no grind?”.
…
I honestly don’t really see any counter argument to that.
Fractals and ascended gear are directly aimed at players who like grinding for gear.
Everyone else can ignore it.
Games don’t use much bandwidth, but the real issue is increased and variable latency. If they start prioritizing traffic, you may experience random delays in packets getting to game servers. And good luck if you play while some priority Netflix traffic runs.
Implement a link between stats and active defense, such that higher DPS stats means less endurance and endurance regen, while having more toughness and vitality give you more.
Also, utilities could be tied to stats, such that active defence utilities are affected in a similar way.
Either of these would make it far less desirable to run in full DPS equipment.
Two thumbs up. Good fun – rolling Karkas FTW.
Dungeons are about two things – playing your character reasonably well, and coordinating with others. Soloable versions remove one of those.
Also, they introduce another balancing problem, since people would reasonably expect every class to be equally able to complete them.
It crushes performance, since the calculations to detect collisions between polygons is laborious.
I would love to have Orr remain dangerous, but have it full of wandering patrol groups, not scattered individual enemies. The single enemies are more annoying than difficult, whereas wandering groups of 4 or 5 would keep you on your toes, while still letting you move freely. And it’s more reasonable lore-wise.
Repair costs suck in dungeons, but are minor in general play, IMO.
Waypoint costs annoy me far, far more because I’d like to zip around to any placer I fancy.
“You have been placed in a normal (but empty) zone. Would you like to join an underflow server? Y/N”
(No WvW info or bonuses on underflow servers, etc.)
Very impressive!
Fun group, and always someone around to do stuff with!
Get off your butt and be LaZy!
Go to the mists and practice on the different targets. Heavy armor takes about half the damage light armor does.
Bug report sent in. I got all the way to the end (‘Talk to Trahearne’, but he was nowhere to be found. I’m getting discouraged…
