Whom do the Lionguard serve?

in Lore

Narcemus.1348

I would say that it is highly likely that much of the Lionguard joined the Seraph or other military organizations after their city was destroyed, and in the end a few of them stuck around to see the city rebuilt, and lead to the naming of the new police force after the one that defended the city in the past. Entirely speculation, but at the same time it makes sense, especially in a rapidly changing world, to hold on to things of the past for some stability.

The 6 Elder Dragons and the 6 Gods

Narcemus.1348

Well, it is not essentially necessary for all “gods” or god-like beings of Tyria to be like the Six. I mean we know that the 6 dragons are equivalent in power to the 6 gods, it is just that for the most part the areas in which they hold power are different. The 6 gods, as well as the spirits of the wild, hold some sway over the fabric of reality (in the sense that they can create portals into the mists, this is also shown through their having of the twin of the Scepter of Orr). The dragons are just as strong, but this is a power that, from what I can tell, they do not have. They are a creation of Tyria itself (or Tyria is a creation of theirs, depending on translation). Obviously this is entirely speculative, but at the same time I can a barren world where Primordius and Bubbles fight largely to create and drown land, while 6th corrupts the land created by Primordius to create vegetative life under his control, and this ends in a titanic battle between forces that in a sense creates the world of Tyria as we know it. During a sleep cycle life evolves, and the dragons evolve as well, it could be an interesting insight into the earliest days of the planet, especially if it started as merely a fractal within the mists and grew from that. Ah sometimes I love just letting my imagination run wild, whether it is true or not

The 6 Elder Dragons and the 6 Gods

Narcemus.1348

The Giganticus Lupicus disappeared from Tyria back in 10,000 BE, which is assumed to have been an earlier dragon awakening. The only other awakening we know about is the one in which the dwarves, jotun, seer, mursaat, and forgotten dealt with the dragons, and the exact year of this is “unknown.” It seems unlikely that the dragons awoke just to destroy humanity (as a foreign race) because of the fact that the dragons seem to want to destroy all, and their last awakening had nothing to do with humanity. Much of what you mention, sunken continents and enslavement by undead liches were things completely unrelated to the Elder Dragons, because they were the machinations of the god Abaddon. That being said, someone could speculate that if the gods did, in fact, bring the forgotten to the world, this could have been the reason for the last awakening, but in my mind this seems unlikely. The note about the dragons being the original ‘gods’ of Tyria does seem possible to me though. I have always wondered at this point, especially because of the fact that they seem very rooted on Tyria the planet, and they have only just started to look at the mists and making incursions there.

Yeah, the swimming does throw a major wrench into the whole situation, but to be honest, watching my charr swim underwater doesn’t look very natural either. I mean she seems to swim like she has webbed hands, but lady those are claws not fins :P And if I remember right, in GW1 there was only one group of humans, the Kournans, that enslaved the Centaurs, and because of our help they were released. I think, at least hope they realize, that humans can be allies against greater threats, and Joko is someone that they definitely know is a great threat. That being said, I never really got a good count on how many Veldrunners there were, but it never looked like there were more than a dozen in the game (even through the cinematics). Because of that it seems likely they might have just got wiped out.

Knowing ArenaNet’s normal set-up, if they planned on having an event at the end they would have posted it’s time/date and included extremely vague hints that would have left people on the forums speculating about what would happen. My personal thought is that this holiday was set up this way on purpose because of the fact that so many people are out and about and unable to get on very often. Most likely it will just end and things will go back to normal, perhaps with a finished fountain and new lighthouse (while the old one crumbles in ruins, something I am still kinda bitter about.)

Personal opinion, Tengu, Largos and Centaurs. I know the centaurs of Tyria are evil, very cold hearted. But I could honestly see that changing once we get to Elona. Assuming any of the centaurs of Elona are still alive it would make sense that they would be much more friendly with any humans surviving in Elona (because of the common enemy factor). I know that Centaurs wouldn’t fit the current characters models or armor or anything, but I highly doubt that would change ArenaNet’s stance on making them a race. I mean the Charr were made into a race when nothing about their physique matched the current races (which are pretty close to just larger and smaller versions of a human model.

As for Glint’s baby, someone told me apart from the actual fight, there’s never any mention that she can actually reproduce, and all her eggs were crystallized. (info from someone else, i’ve never played GW1) So originally i was thinking they may have decided to not acknowledge it in the future.

A) The guy mentioned he never played GW1 and thus he was unsure of the details
B) He only ever mentions the eggs that you pick up in the Dragon’s Lair mission, which seems to mean he knew nothing about Glint’s Challenge

I was responding DIRECTLY to the post that he placed right above my post! I was CLARIFYING that Glint did, in fact, have a child. I was not stating anything to do with the Flameseeker Prophecies shield. I was merely clarifying a fact for someone who does not fully understand the lore of the game. I would definitely prefer not to be called by people just for helping to clarify a point of confusion to the OP.

Nothing I stated meant that I believed the dual dragons had anything to do with Glint and Glint’s baby, seeing as it appears none of those eggs hatched until closer to the time of Eye of the North and are thus unrelated to the prophecies. I do believe, though, that it seems to point towards Glint being a mastermind behind all of these actions (which Oracles and Fortune Tellers usually are). I would say most likely what has been said is correct. Glint’s fortune telling leads, eventually, to the charr pushing the humans into Ascalon City (the tower on the right is not very Krytan in design). I have no clue what the dragon like beings on the right are though. They could represent forgotten, perhaps, but they do not look like anything I have really seen in game. Perhaps both dragon heads represent Glint. And on one side her words are leading to the charr invasion of ascalon (remember I’m not stating that she told the charr to invade, just that her words lead to a chain of events that eventually pushed the ascalonian chosen on their journey) and on the other side her words are shaping the actions of the forgotten (possible dragon/snake-like beings on the right hand side) to test the chosen. But as always, it is mere speculation which is created through the knowledge we have of the situation that occurred.

Pretty much with norn it is all about the individual. You have to prove yourself to be anything among them, and any religious affiliation or any such other information about you is merely a backdrop. I’ll use an example mentioned in an early norn blog post back when we were waiting for the game to be released. It was two merchants talking about the Sons of Svanir and one of them said something to the extent of, “His group may be evil, but his coin weighs the same.” (Not in any way an exact copy, just a basic paraphrase) So basically, if a specific son of svanir proves himself a ruthless killer/pillager he would be booted from Hoelbrak upon trying to enter because of the danger he would bring to the stead, but this doesn’t mean that every tom, dick, and harry son of svanir deserve the same treatment.

In my mind it was her feigning obliviousness towards the fact that he was the one that had orchestrated the whole event. Now if Jennah had stated outright that she knew what he was doing and put him under arrest he might find certain legal loopholes or something to get out of his situation, or she could have him executed (and possibly lose information on people higher up than him that want her out of power A.K.A White Mantle). Jennah pretending to not know about his role in the events of that day can put him under “protective custody” directly under the eyes of the Shining Blade, and this is something he cannot remove himself from by any legal means because it is a “for his own protection” situation. Because of the way that he was stumbling on his own words and such near the end of the dungeon just made it seem more likely to me that a plan of his backfired and he was stuck dealing with the side-effects.

I cannot really see a third race as a possibility – kodan come closest, but their lack of customization bothers me though they can still be added into a Far Shiverpeaks expansion, with a large Sanctuary somewhere in that in-land sea that Jormag made as a home city. Naga are also close, if there’s ever a Canthan expansion, but their lack of legs is harmful to their chances and if there’s a Canthan expansion I suspect tengu to be more likely, despite their lack of modern influence with Cantha.

If you were to go off of NPC models for humans you would think the only option was white/Caucasian Ascalonian models. I think there is obviously room for expansion in the types of customizable characters.

Well, I do remember the storyline of EotN itself saying that our players didn’t believe the stone dwarves would hold out much longer against the threat of the Destroyers. That would be the reason behind why our group attacked the Great Destroyer alone and left the GOLEM’s behind to help the dwarves hold back the destroyer onslaught. Obviously since that point in time though, the dwarves have all undertaken that ritual and their numbers will have increased greatly compared to just their front line soldiers.

Personally I’m seeing a guild keep being invaded by another guild. Guilds are grouped up in this match based on the ranking of their guild and the number of individuals being involved in the match (that way people don’t feel left out if they have a small guild). And the invading guild has the ability to bring in trebuchets and such to break down defenses while the defending team can create similar type items to keep their enemies at bay. I think it could be fun, but honestly I absolutely love war strategy games and for that to even be included in a MMORPG (WvW) made me the happiest person on earth Bug if it was expanded even more… I would do it all day!!!

I have to disagree on the jumping puzzle points that a lot of people are making. I think there has to be a little bit of a learning curve on it, sure, but I don’t believe it needs to be like a 4 hour process before you can finish it the first time like my friend (I refused to do it after my 3rd try). I literally sat and played through all of the halloween quests on my two characters in GW1 while my friend attempted to finish the jumping puzzle. I just felt it wasn’t fun, it took forever waiting, and it was just a major waste of time. Now wintersday comes along and is, in my mind, a much better example of a good jumping puzzle. I feel like there’s just a range of people from “Wanting Free Handouts” to “I want to spend half of the event trying to figure it out” and it’s just hard to meet any of the wants in that area.

In the original the Guild Battles would happen between Guild Halls, which were located in island chains in the Battle Isles. Well in GW2 the Guild Halls aren’t around because the Guild Wars that the game is named after lead to law making it illegal for guilds to own land on mainland Tyria, and because of the DSD the Battle Isles aren’t available to us anymore (assuming they survived Zhaitan’s Tsunami). My thought it that, with the Mists being very PvP oriented, that it might become possible for Tyrians to capture locations in the mists to use as their Guild Halls, and that we will eventually be able to upgrade them and use them for Guild Battles. I do hope that they bring this feature back soon, it would be fun to have another use for guilds beyond WvW keep/tower captures.

If you look at the range of stuff you have to deal with between The Shatterer – Tequatl – Claw of Jormag you’ll see that these scale up in difficulty quite a bit. I believe much of it is just ArenaNet giving us a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the difficulty in taking on a Dragon Champion. And I can see things getting much more difficult as the games progresses even further into other ED’s territories.

Heck perhaps they didn’t even understand the levitating rocks until they got to the Tarnished coast and saw the ones in Magus Stones. But all you have to do is look at some of the watch towers that they created through areas, and the most obvious example is the G.O.L.E.M. factory.

From what I remember in GW1 you are just going to meet with a “seer” as in someone who holds information that you do not understand or comprehend. This was just, since then, implanted as the name of the race, because much like the Forgotten, no one remembers what they were called.

I have always leaned more towards the Seers myself, but honestly we won’t know more about it until we get a chance to study it more in the Far Shiverpeaks expansion perhaps?

Narcemus.1348

Remember this is the Rata Sum of GW1 and not the Rata Sum of GW2. These two cities are so completely different there is absolutely no comparison. That being said, it is theorized that the civilizations that created the ruins in the Tarnished Coast were either the Elonians (who possibly had colonies in the area) or the human race that were supposed to be in the Utopia expansion. Now whether or not this race of humans exists at all is unknown, because of the fact that the expansion was cancelled, but we do know that there is a lot more to the world of Tyria than we have any clue of.

This is wrong. We know that those technologies did not exist in those other civilizations, and the most logical answer to who that technology is either is SEER or the MURSAAT.

Both are ancient very very advanced civilizations, and the seer were wiped out by the mursaat. So most likely the ruins were of the defeated Seer.

I do not quite understand what you are talking about……

If you are mentioning the floating orbs or stuff like that in Rata Sum it’s obviously newer things that were added to the ruins of an older civilization. And this older civilization is what we are talking about.

That being said I do not remember ever explicitly being told if this was occuring or not. Plus I would think taking on an Elder Dragon would be the last thing on Palawa Joko’s mind, so most likely his forces would be defending what he already has from incursions of dragon minions, not the other way around.

Agreed, plus for your statement to hold any truth, they would also have to hold an opposing theme to one of each of the previous cycle’s races. Because we know for a fact at least Primordus and Zhaitan were specifically said to be a part of the last cycle (and the others are assumed as well, it’s just that we get those specific names from the Dwarves) We can assume that we would have to somehow tie Zhaitan, Primordus, Kralkatorrik, Jormag, and DSD to the Seer, Mursaat, Jotun, Dwarves, and Forgotten. That’s probably old concept art from before the Sons of Svanir were fully fleshed out. The reason why no women are allowed is because Jora (a girl) killed Svanir himself. Makes me wonder what they would’ve done if a man had killed Svanir: then they would have to be the Sons of Svanir, No Men Allowed.

It’s not only that Jora killed Svanir, though that is a big part of it. But Jora also refused to take on Jormag’s blessing and for some reason that we do not know of, Jormag does not turn females into icebrood at all after this incident. This leads me to believe that females are somehow immune to his power of corruption much like Sylvari are. Because we do see Jormag attempt to corrupt at least one woman, but none have so far been corrupted successfully.

Truthfully they are very anti-women. In fact I was talking to the ones inside Hoelbrak with my female charr, and they told her to leave now or die (in some not quite so nice words). All I can say is, more than likely the concept art was made before the Sons of Svanir were completely fleshed out, but ArenaNet seems to hate the idea of leaving their concept art out of the game just because it is not necessarily accurate. I mean the loading screen for fighting Zhaitan shows him being probably 20x larger than he is in the game, and there are still concept art pieces of the sylvari bringing druid-like plant creations to life (from the days when characters would have companions to join them.
