kitten the lot of them. Longbow ranger is OP. All day they just 222222222 and kill 10 people with one rapid fire, OP. They can stand back and do nothing and press one button to win everything with pew pew, OP. Every time I have fight, always kittening ranger coming with 222222 when I’m low and dance on my body, OP. Always when I’m running around WvW, ranger come from across the map and knock me down and pew pew me, I can’t do anything, OP. Every time I hear pew pew I cry and want to flip table because the noise hurt me, OP. kittening ranger should be called rager class coz they’re OP.

On a serious note, ragers are only good for killing afk’s and interrupting duels in WvW.

XDlol rofl I feel you dude a glass thief and a glass ranger are two totally different play styles, one has to risk him/her self to get within melee range with low health pool whereas the other just has to spam away in a safe distance. Meh

Stupid whiners should really shut up and play the profession long enough to find out if it’s really OP or not. PM me as a thief and I’ll get on my engi to show you if thieves are OP or not. I’ve main a thief for almost a year now and still get my kitten wiped when ever I make a single mistake in duels but once I get on my engi… kitten I rarely lost a duel unless if they were really good players(which was rare).Spvp ranked,unranked and hotjoin pfffffff no problem and I’ve only played that class for LESS THAN A WEEK. All I had to do was spam bombs, stack might, plant turrets spam some more and my opponent will either be close to dead or retreating. I wipe the floor with thieves on my engi…

Are we talking about 2 Thiefs/1 Mesmer that want to fight or trolling the people? Everyone can troll in some way and if they want to fight you never need 10-20 people, you need around 3 that can play, thats it…

Classes having problems to outheal burstdamage? Have you never seen an ele going from 5% fulllive, a guardian healing with meditations, an ingi doing his healcombo or a ranger using his 8k heal? Withdraw is used by most thieves and is very vulnerable to poison, 4500 heal going to 3000k isn´t fun. And are you really crying about Mug having heal? you know that ONE meditaton or shout does the same when traited?

Allt he while though, said classes are plainly visible and are being attacked + cooldown on shouts/blocks/meditations. A guardian/warrior if forced to go against 3 people who know how to evade will be down rather fast, despite all those blocks/heals. A thief, however, can – if things go wrong – stop attacking and concentrate on remaining hidden until things look ok again which will usually be less than 10 seconds.

Ok, then let guards keep their healing but remove blocks or burstdamage (medi-guard here)

If you think about it you should realize demanding to remove a big part of a class doesn´t work without breaking it.

All of those classes you mention melt when in a 1 vs 2 or 1 vs 3 situation against opponents who know those classes and who can evade the bursts. Thieves, on the other hand, come out of these fights quite often as winner.

What do you actually want, dozens thief able to keep at your butt but hitting like a wet noodle?

No – but I don’t want them to be able to hit like a truck and then disengage and come back for more. Have them use stealth to apporach, let them have a bonus when attacking from stealth, let them have high burst damage – but when they start to hit, deny stealth for 10+ seconds to them and remove most gap openers so that they – like most classes – will have to duke it out and win or die instead of their current … ooops – let me be 3000+ away … mechanism.

The minute a thief can be more successful in outnumbered fights or perhaps 1v1 scenarios is the moment you can call them op. But they are not. Take anyone of equal skill level and put them against each other, one playing thief and the other playing another profession, and the match will be even.

I was 1 vs 3 yesterday and won. Include “equal skill level” in that one as well as I won against guys from my former server who I know are bad – but I had no idea they were that bad.
Anyway, my friend and I are about equal skill level and I don’t stand a chance against his medi guard.

Ikr they are such a pain in the kitten . Any type of good guard will give you a bad day, unless if you go condi(don’t)

I actually agree with all of your points, except your first one. I believe thief DOES have the advantage while in stealth, because a) I cannot see what they are doing, and b) they CAN see what CDs I have popped, in order to prepare for the next fight, and c) I dont even know if they are there anymore. I personally feel that the fact that a thief can retreat into stealth and then run away, and apply pressure without even being there, is very overwhelming. Especially roaming in wvw with my friends, I feel we are inevitably hunted by a thief (which is your right and what you SHOULD be doing!) without the ability to confront our attacker because of the large expanse of space, and easy access to stealthed mobility. I will come out and say that my experience on thief is limited to a level 37 Labyrinth farmed char- but these are the experiences I have had on ALL the classes I play.

I hope I have maintained the friendly discussion atmosphere that is on this thread so far

New PVP Meta spec for IP change?

I have been playing with this in a p/p s/d build and it can really add on the health especially if you start cleaves.

A single CNd on a single target with IP and AR while using Steal life on crit food nets me over 1.4k health. If you get a cleave on three targets with the AA you can easily draw in over 1k in health. My crit rate is high 84 percent base an spiking to 100 percent when fury kicks in. As such I find I really do not need two sources of fury the one from the CS line being plenty.

I gave up MUG for sundering strikes as I can keep a whole pile of stacks of Vulnerability on the target. I expect we WILL see a lot more builds using this (IP) trait.

Now I know all the naysayers will claim that Executioner superior but I do not see the logic of the statement. If one is able to get an enemies health down to 50 percent then one obviously has enough power to do so. What can cause you to lose a battle at this stage is running out of health before the enemy does.

IP users will always have more health so can stay in that battle longer. Two or more swings IMHO will adequately make up that 20 percent extra damage if the IP user can stay in battle that much longer while the Executioner user has to break off to regain health.

Now the decision I have to make is whether or not the AR worth it. I tend to like those AR traits such as vigor on heal or might on dodge. I also like the extra INI from perparedness for the p/p set and that ricochet. I like sundering strikes and or Mug and obviously can not have them all and keep IP.

in this regard I do not thing there a wrong answer as much as “What suits MY style of play the best”

You can run a test ranger if you’ve got an extra slot:) that’s what I did. Delete it once you’ve learnt enough about the class. I ran a lotta ranger builds to find their weakness. They’ve got plenty for the thief to take advantage of. Oh and keep in mind that they’ve still got great sword as a secondary if they’re power, avoid bear maul no matter what cause it’s really lethal, other then that you should be good to go if you’re close enough. Can use d/p build against them if you’re in hotjoin, they drop like flies once you gank them.

I think you’re fine as long as you don’t choose a norn or a charr.

In a recent topic I listed a few things that needed to happen before thief’s strong points were to be nerfed. The idea is to replace thief’s reliance on stealth with a combat design based around theft (BECAUSE THIEVES STEAL kitten, RIGHT?!) while turning stealth into an extra tool the thieves have access to.

What this would accomplish is making thief more malleable to balance changes while making thief fun and effective (also annoying) in it’s own unique way. Through theft, the thief will be able to gain defensive and offensive capabilities normally not available.

Now the way Theft is going to work is like this:

1.) Each skill and utility will have some form of Theft ability.
2.) Theft abilities only activate when criteria is met. For example: if someone has Protection at 76% HP or more and is hit by Heartseeker that has a Theft ability stating “If target is above 75% HP, steal a boon.” the remaining protection gets applied to the thief.

Now I have some ideas of my own, but it would probably be more fun to ask for everyone’s ideas first. Before I let you do so, I am going to list the possibilities I am looking at and if there is enough I might list them. Here is the list of the type of Theft effects I am looking at:

  • Steal a boon.
  • Switch a condition with a boon.
  • Apply a boon on you and apply a condition on your target.
  • Copy affected allies boons onto you.
  • Transfer conditions onto affected targets.
  • Steal Endurance.
  • Copy a random skill from target. (Replaces w/e is in F1 slot. Single use.)
  • Etc.

Let the ideas flow!

Mesmer sand necros mess around with boons all the time lol. Stealing endurance… That’s kinda OP don’t you think?:/ other then that I actually agree with the idea of more access to stealing boons

it is indeed not the stealth that makes the thief a bugger but their mobility.
A good thief can stay out of range indefinately even without stealth and teleport in and out for big burst damage and all that without cooldowns.

But if it was just that it wouldn’t be so annoying.

What is most annoying is a thief/mesmer combination. Especially when it is a PU mesmer.

They do not only teleport, they stealth, do huge damage and basically I haven’t been able to see all that they can do because they kill me in seconds.

Go read about the profession then. Every class has it’s weakness, learn them and make it your advantage.

You can rain conditions on mobs and let your bleed stacks do the work. P/D n d/d with caltrops would be nice you’ll get bored over time though. I really do suggest you role a thief ^^ you’ll have fun with melee or ranged either way I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I myself am looking at a 2/6/0/0/6 build after patch but will very likely tweak. I have grown attached to Hastened replenishment in the build and the first burst from the pistol with +15+10+10 percent damage hits hard.

Question for you however. Why the points in SA when you have no ready sources of stealth? This build has no condition cleanse I see outside SOA. Relying on stealth from black powder and the blast finisher off short bow is not avaliable on demand and will compete for needed INI to get that blast off.

I prefer a higher Crit rate myself on the p/P build. My own experience is you want those proc on crit effects from the unload.

Just as example.

In a p/p unload I can get 8 800 point unloads for 6400 points. That is a 960 point heal plus 325 from steal life on crit for 1280 heal guaranteed on an unload. (every shot a crit theory)

You will receive around 70 percent of that. Why not leverage the 15 percent of IP to the max?

The other issue with your build is the low armor. My own opinion is you want to get that higher so as to ward off more damage up front. This allows that IP to better fill your health pool back up. I learned in playing the Guardian that if you are relying on a heal type build there better synergy with higher armor.

You might consider taking the trait that gives vulnerability in the DA line. This will boost the overall damage of your unloads as you can stack the vulnerability quickly. This in turn will feedback more health from IP. It also helps keep the damage up in the unload as you lose that ini and benefits of First strikes and lead attacks.

That’s why I took D/P over short bow just in case I get into any sticky situation. Sundering strikes would be nice though but I’ve been to attached to shadow’s embrace, maybe I’ll change my utility slots for shadowstep. Then again thanks for the tip.

XD I tend to not go FULL glass cause anything can kill you with just a touch. Don’t copy paste everything you see out there without fully understanding the build. This build is really a YOLO build instead you don’t die once but many many many times, you get the point.

Yup this is the one. Wanted to share this with any thief out there who’s interested in p/p or invigorating precision. A standard build with a lil bit of tweaking there’s a lotta alternatives to this build. I dont know if im weird, but I think a thief with more condi cleanse would be over powered. It has some high statying power for a full zerk class that if you make him cleanse condi more often it would be impossible for some condi class to bring down.

You’re not weird just wrong. Keep in mind that thieves have some of the lowest hp pool in the game, even with the great shadow’s embrace the thief is still vulnerable to any power or condi damage if they’re out of stealth and it only takes a few seconds to bring them down honestly. I mean you roam a ranger, you must surely have some experience with thieves in spvp right?

I really would prefer feline grace over cloaked in shadow honestly. Blind during stealth might be useful against melee range but dodging is just the best way to mitigate damage, with pew pew rangers ahead you get to gap close easier. Awesome video dude, love the previous one too.

Actually, your damage will be fine. The dps on 20606 is pretty comparable with the dps on 20066, minus the 10% modifier. And to be honest, a thief using stealth really isn’t that problematic in PvP because you’re not expected to contest/hold points anyway.

There are a few reasons I think PvP’ers tend to forgo shadow arts.

(1) You don’t have perma-swiftness out of combat, meaning you’ll rotate and +1 slower than you would on 20066.
(2) If you’re going to rotate slower, your burst should hit harder, which is where 60206 and 26006 come in.
(3) Shadow arts tends to encourage slow and selfish play where you spend a lot of time in stealth, which is wasted time because you’re either resetting a fight or you’re not helping your team. (Note: this can be circumvented by consciously limiting the amount of time you spend in stealth).

Also of note, there’s a vocal and elitist anti-SA culture that considers the trait line “cheese”. I personally think 20066 (especially 20066 D/P) is just as “cheesy” as 20606, so I don’t think this criticism is valid.

In summary, you won’t rotate as quickly as 20066, nor will you burst as hard as 60206/26006. However, my opinion is that 20606 isn’t as bad as many of the mindless teef drones will have you believe, and excluding the highest level of play, you won’t really be gimping your team unless you spend most of your time sitting in stealth.

What’s the best 1v1 duel build by far? Especially against engineers. S/D panic strike? Or d/p both require burst but which one do you think is better?

I can’t believe this hasn’t been fixed yet. They even posted this was being “talked about quite a bit internally” over a year ago (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/balance/PvX-Thief-Last-Refuge/first).

Everyone’s an arm chair balance designer, but just give LR a 0.5s “Escape to the Shadows” buff before the blinding powder making you semi-immune to revealed. JUST HALF A SECOND. Long enough to finish a CnD, for that last projectile to hit or cancel your channel.

To avoid uber-insta-gib-double-backstab-lolol @25% builds, limit the reveal immunity to normal attacks (i.e. stealth attacks like backstab/sneak attack would apply revealed, CnD or vital shot would not), so best case you get .5s of invisible normal attacks.

This is a really good idea tho.

I’ve main a thief for almost a year now and don’t really think this is an issue, sure it got me killed a couple of times but after a while of getting the hang of it and how it flows. It really isn’t a big deal. It actually saved me more times when my utilities are on cool down. I mean all you really have to do is pay attention. Isn’t good thieves suppose to play that way? Waiting for the right time to strike? Paying attention at your surroundings?

Dude it’s still viable if you stack enough. It’s just overpowered when you stack too much and others don’t get to. Like thief compared to engi for example. Dude I get close to 20stakcs easily on my engi… Like permanent might. Plus it buffs condi dmg n power base. Unless if you’re running a p/x or u bleed with d/d 3 you won’t have any problem.

Hastened Replenishment is trash because the Thief does not benefit from switching weapons often like an Ele/Engi/Warr

The initiative system gimps our weapon swap because we do not get access to 5 new skills on weapon swap if you blew all your initiative on the previous weapon set – Thief swaps weapons for utility or range not necessarily due to cooldowns

Join the celestial spam fest before it gets nerfd.
“bunker” a point and enjoy spaming bleeds, cripple, weakness, and poison while covering it with needles.
Never go stealth unless you want to clear 1 condition or get a backstab, and even then never ever stay in stealth for more than 1/2 sec.

With the buff to invigorating percision it might be viable now. S/p might fit really well with this if you’re gonna cleave. With 1050 ferocity 8% would be 84 heal, on the other hand 15% you’ll gain 157.5 that’s some improvement in my opinion.

The build I’m showing is just a build I’m being used to don’t copy it, it’s just an experiment.

It’s not a qualified meta cause it’s an easy counter able build if people put little effort into learning about it…

but, but, but…. Thrill of the Crime, Bountiful Theft, Sleight of Hand, and Mug….4/6 of my traits are thief related. I’ve just had a little dagger and acrobatics training as well.

Almost dude almost. Critical strikes, acrobatics,shadow arts and deadly arts doesn’t say assassin but it’s pretty much self explanatory. Look at the utilities for instance assassin’s signet. =,= I just got one hit by a guard today… Was on my s/d build with 6 in acro… The rest were zerk amu n pack runes… Well not one hit but I died pretty quick… Didn’t stand a chance.

it’s fun and all, but the lack of range (not counting the gap closing) kills it for me. I used to run around like this, but especially now with the engineers everywhere, I need that bow. I can’t take them out without it – and even then it’s rough most of the time. They tear me up if I get in their circle too soon.

There are gap closers with d/p set but I guess you’re right. With turret engis on the lose it’s worth while to get some range pressure.

Hey mango, is there a way to combine assassin’s equilibrium with a few back stab builds? Maybe even a s/d build with 6acro and the other 8 points spent in damage instead of trickery for more burst, preferably with daggers for faster burst from stealth. What do you guys think? I know it can’t really compete with metas but I don’t wanna always have such limited choices. I’m gonna run a few experiments with that build and come up with something for us to agree on. Stating for more suggestions.
