He lost a few rounds at the beginning when I was using my p/d cheese build but quickly caught up to my tactics and beat me continuously the few rounds afterwards after that I proceeded with changing different builds against him … In the end he still countered me in every way till I got on my engi. We were both equally skilled, we’re not the best but we get the job done when we’re in ranked.
By noobs I meant new players, and you obviously aren’t, so it’s normal for you to lose on a power-based build.
As of the p/d cheese build, the problem could simply be that he’s used to his build and you are not. Especially if you never play d/d or s/d, you won’t be used to landing CnDs. If you really want to beat him one day (we all have that one friend who destroys us on our favorite profession, making us rage!), p/d is still your best bet. One more advice: play carrion and not rabid. Vitality is superior to toughness against conditions, and your stealthed attack on pistol deals great power damage as well.
Lol of course I took carrion. Rabid is pretty much useless to a thief. What made you think I took rabid anyway? XD good news is I made a condition troll build and actually outplayed a condi necro :o who knew XDlol the build was 2/0/2/4/6 p/d and off hand d/d krait rune n carrion amu. Reason why I placed 4into acro was because of feline grace and master trapper oh n pain respond. Was running 6in SA previously but either way it works well. Oh and 1!death blossom + krait rune is 5k damage though bleeding. Potent stuff.

Don’t take everyone’s opinions so seriously. Especially the ones in the forums. Pve isn’t something that’s difficult and you don’t die easily. Unlike pvp, the AI doesn’t dodge your damage. If you’re willing to take a deeper look in how the combat system works I suggest you take a few rounds in spvp as other players are the real obvious threat and treat once you kill them of course.
Backstab dealing torment :0_ that’s actually a decent idea.
Condition thief + power d/d
A grand master trait in the trickery line called hastened replenishment give you 4 initiative everytime you heal pair it up with withdraw you’ll get an extra 4ini every 15secs
I mainly use the trickery line when I’m in need for a load of initiative. I’ve tried combining it with 6in crit n trick it didn’t turn out so well as you’ll die too quickly because unlike d/p you don’t get as muh stealth as it obviously.
other then that just improvise more an you’ll eventually find the build you love ^^
I just want my dancing dagger damage un-nerfed, since they already buffed phantasms, clones, and necro minions.
Thought we got a buff a few weeks ago. I think the new dancing dagger is good as it is.
I can see stealth being very viable in the new strong hold map as your objective is to assassinate The Lord
I find Druids being fishing awesome :0_ definitely making a new ranger.
It’s all about mind games I think when faced against a mesmer. I’ve been gaming for a year now on my thief and have only met 3mesmers that completely out play me cause they don’t give me a chance to touch them. Once they hit, they hit hard. Then again I wasn’t as good as I’m now but I’d say the honestly the thief as an advantage if we stealth enough and apply the right amount of pressure.
Oh. It’s okay I guess the only problem about s/p is that it takes up a load of initiative to be successful and you don’t get to surprise them with stealth. Other then that it still does brings the pain to every fight is played well. I see it flow well with sleight of hand though.
PW? What’s that?
Blinding Powder —> Backstab --> Cloak and Dagger —> Backstab
i do this combo regardless of class and it works. except necro’s need a third backstab
I see… you are one of those…
Fighting the rev is going to be pretty interesting but i get the feeling it is going to be very similar to fighting a warrior.
Im hoping the rest of the class shuts down stealth spammers so there wont be as many stealth dependant time wasting thieves in pvp
He just seems to really really optimistic but yeah I guess your’re right about the warrior part. At least they won’t be as tough as fighting a guard hopefully. They will bring a load of pain in aoe wise though. Guess it’s their specialty.
A thing called balance is the reason why condi duration and dmg are not in the same line. Also, I’d say acro is one of the most used trait lines in the game right now….. sooooo yeah, I assume you must be talkin about pve
Don’t assume. I wouldn’t take pve so seriously in terms of combat wise because you can run anything and not die as long as you have a functional brain. How is acrobatic the most used trait line? Which gameplay wise are you assuming? Pve? Isn’t obvious enough that I’m stating about pvp?
“..don’t engage the fight unless it’s a thief or a mesmer.” This is so sad…
Might be sad but what thief would 1v1 an engi, necro, ele :/
Results mostly in a suicide :pFrom Gw2Wiki – “Thieves are expert in the shadow arts. They utilize stealth and shadowstepping to surprise and to get close to their target. They’re deadly in one-on-one combat using their agility, acrobatic fighting style, and the ability to steal to overcome their enemies. They have an affinity for setting traps and using venom. As an adventurer profession, thieves wear medium armor.”
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great guide. One that shows what a thief can do even though it’s not much and an engi or a guardian would have been a better help to your team. It’s sad what the thief has become because of all the nerfs.
I do agree thief is good 1v1, but it’s not good in 1v1 on a point, where the shadowsteps and stealth are useless :p. Thieves are good to +1 fights, quick decaps and other roaming..
Ye thief had alot to soak in from the nerfs.. Rightfully? I don’t know tbh.. S/D became quite a wet noodle due the might nerf (which was totally not needed on S/D tbh)
Yeah sadly :/ the only real threat we in have spvp is the d/p panic build which is still really effective, especially when you take more immobs like devourer venom:) mix it up with quick venom you’ll have 3 reliable locks. Devourer, basi & lastly panic strike. Oh yeah dude denied that’s my favourite build currently with shadow step(need em stun breaks) n SR.
Awesome video once again dude! Keep it up. Look forward in dueling you with my thief.
Deadly Arts 300power 30% expertise(condition duration) next line would be Critical Strike 300precision 300ferocity(okay acceptable combination) 3rd one Shadow Arts(every beginners favourite) 300toughness, 300healing power also another acceptable trait line that makes sense. Forth one would be the rarely used acrobatic trait line containing one of the most useless grand master trait that would be assassin’s equilibrium (no offends to Anet but I really find this trait unworthy) 30%boon duration & 300 points for vitality. Last but not least the Trickery Line, 300 condition damage together with 30% recharge steal rate( meta’s favourite ). I might be stating this with prejudice since I’m not an employee in Anet but I would really appreciate if they shed some light into why the trait lines are placed in such an awkward position. For instance, why not pair 30% condition duration & 300 condition damage (malice) together? Placing the other 300 raw power into trickery line would be great as well and I think many thief players out there would greatly appreciate this. Think about it all power builds need more initiative to be truly effective. Okay death blossom might take up a load of initiative but you need to spam that same skill for it to be fully effective. Then again if you guys did what I just told you it would be vastly unfair for other classes. I think most veteran thieves out there understand what I’m trying to let out. Arenanet I would really be thankful if you guys would just give us an insight to way the trait lines are build this way as I do love the game and have spent countless hours on it during my free time. Hope you guys would take this into consideration.

No worries, they will only have a slight advantage in conquest, everywhere else we surpass them.
Yeah I guess the slight part would be a ability to greatly control their opponents. :~| ouch those aoes though.
From what we’ve seen so far, revenants aren’t a real threat to thieves. You have far greater mobility than they do, so you can always reset the fight if need be. It’d be somewhat like fighting a PU mesmer. You use your stealth/mobility to control the pace of the fight, and you can reset easily if you mess up. Worst comes to worst, the fight comes to a stalemate, and you waste time before moving on.
Worst comes to worst… Huh… So in your opinion we still stand a good chance if both players are equally skilled right? It might be like fighting a necro hybrid guard in my perspective guess the best tactic would still be hit stealth hit back off hit again till it’s down. Hopefully the standard d/p panic strike build will stand a good chance against this one.
Dude….roll theif….win. There are so many cheese builds for this class it is pathetic.
There’s only one cheese build that’s viable for the thief you crap.
Holy kitten he’s miserable. Looks more like a man dressed in a frog costume having another bad advertising day. XD
brings harpoon gun and spear out of water you were saying? Nope sailing.
Yup! Same here lol that’s why I barely use shortbow. The only thing that’s worth it about shortbow for me is skill5 which I find really helpful. There’s an evade frame yeah but it just doesn’t feel right rubber banding.
Anything with a dagger main hand is nice. The sword dagger combination is a bit advance but the auto attack it does far weights heavier than dagger in terms of cleave damage. As for the rest is best for you to discover them on your own as I wouldn’t recommend spoiling the fun of discovery;) IF you’re going into spvp you’re going to die a lot at first, especially if you’ve got a terrible team so I suggest you get used to that till you’ve the the idea of how the thief’s playstyle is. Other then that good luck and have fun stealing.
http://youtu.be/0UrRviMwIBg let’s examine on how we’re going to counter this guys. I know that this class isn’t complete but there’s a picture on how it’s going to turn out during battles. Let’s keep our daggers close and stab at a tactful manner guys! Lol hopefully we’ll stand a good chance.
Lol I imagine myself trying to blinds gigantic bosses like teq or the 3giant worms… Fyi worms have to eyes. Maybe frozen maw but what about karka? XD
Yeah, but not every thief uses dagger.
I would vote for “TEEF INFERNO [TI]” actually.. or “TEEF BLOB HUGE [TBH]” I mean it should include all people who main thief.. and that’s a lot.. the guild has got to have an impressive name!Edit: Actually one of my guild’s message of the day is
“Eat my d..aggerstorm” cause I actually said that in skype while diving into a zerg.
Jan PM me in game. Leave me a message since you main a thief cause I’d love the chance to get to duel another thief (super fun). Then again it’ll be after a month or so for me to get on since I’ve got to prepare myself for an upcoming exam. After that then we’ll talk about making a thief guild.
Overall I find LB rangers pathetic. spits
How about “Feel My Dagger”? XD
Shortbow or dagger storm till it falls off.
My first wvw roam( was on my p/d set). Saw a zerk rushing a keep , stealth, went in it looked for a corner to perma stealth, jump around like a true ninja, got knocked back by a golem, fell out the tower, mesmer brought me back up. After that did a few more ninja moves everyone was out of the tower besides me n the zerk. They left eventually leaving one zerk guard behind, surprised him! Killed him! Lucky stomp. Finished The Lord without wasting a ramp. I know ,cheese build but the jumping part was wicked another one was when I was on my d/d went far ,killed a kitten guardian!(newbie) ranger arrived, death blossom to dodge sky hammer! Still got longbow-ed afterwards XD one more death blossom n last refuge saved me.
Consider this: A zerker warrior in wvw will hit a zerker thief for almost 10k with eviscerate, the warrior’s 100 blades will down the thief, rush will hit 5k+. The warrior has better healing, more armor, better movement (meaning can out run the thief), and more hp.
Backstab will hit the warrior for max 5k.
I think backstab is totally worth it, thieves are dangerous, we can kill mesmers and other thieves (and the odd necro who gets caught without prestacked lifeforce).
Why people still think thieves are played for anything else than the style factor and the swoop sounds is beyond me. Face it, if you want to win do not play thief. And do not give me any “but the mobility…” nonsense thief mobility does not win a flower pot anywhere in the game.
Ikr it’s only viable in spvp lol I’d rather have to ability to duel anyone.
Play D/P and win.
You troll.
So here’s the deal, no more beating around the bush, the thief uses STEALTH and precise gameplay to achieve their goal – Snipe a target down.
Noooope, nope nope nope. To say that a Thief uses stealth to achieve his goal is like saying an Engineer inevitably uses elixirs to achieve his. It’s important to know that stealth is only one part of your abilties.
Carrying a rifle is kind of against the thief’s very gameplay, and on top of it, the idea of mixing stealth with a high burst 1200 range weapon is simply toxic. Honestly, you have the Warrior class for all your Samurai and Rifleman needs, they can extend their concepts to more than just barbarian and dark knight and stuff.
Mace, offhand sword and whatever was suggested because it remained within what the Thief stands for within its core: a cunning and dirtier fighter; not some super-agent assassin armed to take down targets from afar.
Fyl turrets are better than elixers
If people absolutely can’t stand LB Rangers, I can barely imagine the toxicity of a Thief with a Rifle, especially if insisting on the “ranged stealth burst” part.
There are always counters to everything dude you’ll find a way to beat them.
Warrior over ranger<3 beware though rangers are a pain in the kitten for warriors, good rangers of course.
Little twicked tweaked+wicked
Give that thief a cookie!
Anyone know any guilds for thieves only? Please respond if you know or are in one. I would very much love to look it up:)
Yeah guys it’s a fair match up if the engi doesn’t pull crate up… But come on what are the odds.
Ezio dude I’m interested in joining Zeus, just gimme a test the next time we get on will you?:)
I have custom builds for wvw and pvp which are wildly different, but both run 6 points in Acrobatics.
Will you indulge us with the builds?
Trying to justify how thieves can survive inside enemy zerg alone?
i see no problem here. not to mention he clearly got out played, he didn’t even realize he got revealed, all he did was SR and he didnt even manage to get in.
No kitten he got revealed and a power ranger was on his tail == he got point blink shotted and zerked down by a mesmer, of course he can’t get in you boob.
Guys I just wanted you to take a look at this. I get that Arenanet are trying to stop permanent stealth in keeps but come on… This is really too much http://youtu.be/SznYIfZumxQ
(edited by Nephrite.6954)
I really wouldn’t want to change my main to a revenant but it really seems like it’s going to be the thief’s next predator ==
Revenant… packs travel bag see yah!
A bonus you get from an engineer other from pve is spvp or wvw cause you can just face roll the majority of the other classes out there.
I have only read the first page and was disappointed. Expected more qq.
If you guys wanna know what a hardcounter is, play a d/p thief against a mediguard.
I have only beaten a medi guard once in a 1v1 duel ONCE!!! It wasn’t easy… I had only 1.5k hp when he was down lol and trust me he was experienced… Was on my d/p set utilising SA in a structured friendly match… Almost kitten my pants fighting him. A good GS scepter guard he is.
Mini wvw transport dolyak, it carries all the stuff you “aquire”. Mine is called Betty III she is no ordninary dolyak, in fact she is a miniature giant space dolyak…
I love this idea XDlol
