Thieves have it hard man… They need to counter something in order to sustain self worth :’(
Take dagger storm if you can.
Don’t use 2/6/0/0/6 it’s for highly skilled players. If you want something like that I suggest you either go with 6/0/2/0/6 or 0/6/2/0/6 if it’s d/p of course. Without a reliable condition removal you’re a free kill against condi heavy specs like terrormancers. Oh and you can try out 6/0/2/0/6 with panic strike and quick venoms why? cause you’ll be taking devourer venom+ bassi venom both on 32s CD after that’s blown off and they’re below 50% that’s where panic strike kicks in. What’s with all the CCs? 1st for your team to lay the pain 2nd don’t have to waste so many initiatives catching them 3rd is overall control. I’ve been using this build for a while and I gotta tell you I don’t have much problem handling zerkers or celes only tanks. Remember dev venom, shadowstep, refuge and basi all of these or take something you like
it doesn’t hurt to innovate. Last thing is try activating dev ven then use shadow shot
once that lands ouchy for squishes. Oh and try to drop black powder in front of where they’re standing:) it’ll help mitigate some dmg.

just saw this, ITS A MUST WATCH!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV3pbeoPmT0
Yeah just saw the video earlier XDlol definitely gonna take a mace
Kill Braham!!!
As the title have stated. Please give me some advice for my warrior. I just can never face these guys in a 1v1 situation(new with warrior). I seem to hold up fine when I’m on my other classes but I just can’t face this guys cause they just kite the crap out of me. I know what to do against a ranger then again I’m not sure what to do against them on my warrior, I’ve even tried the trait that reflects missiles while blocking… Didn’t do much as the ranger was experienced. Help
I don’t get why people run 2/6/0/0/6 d/p and complain about dying… I mean wtf you have little to no condition removal of course you’ll die by anyone who runs 6in any condi trait line without any runes or amulets for support== my point is be realistic about fights don’t copy paste every build you see out there innovate with builds. Thief is a class played with pure skill. At least place 2 in SA for shadow’s embrace or bring a reliable condition removal a suitable consistent one. There are people out there using 2/0/6/0/6 d/d POWER build, see! There’s even 0/6/4/4/0 vampiric build etc etc what I’m trying to say is check out all the runes in the game. How? That’s where spvp comes in;) I know it doesn’t contain all the runes in the game but it’s still enough. I’m constantly trying out and making new builds everytime I get on my thief.
Unless traits make a huge difference in revenant, they’re probably going to be extremely predictable. With visual clues as to the legend they have, and their weapon, once you learn the class you’re going to be able to know exactly what you can expect from them as their utilities are not customizable beyond legend selection.
Are they going to have good counters for existing thief strategy? Yes
Are they going to be unbeatable? I don’t really think so.
Well I really hope this statement is true, have you seen unyielding anguish? It destroys shadow refuge and doesn’t have any cool down. Good players will make them unbeatable even if faced with equal skilled player from other class.
… Crap… Taunt… We’re so screwed…
… I’m so terrified of what the revenant brings… As a thief it’s like waitin for another guardian with higher hp pool… O_O
You can try 0/6/2/0/6 with invigorating precision. It does quite well with majority of specs out there if played well, to sum it up it packs a punch. I never liked going into a fight without shadow’s embrace. Conditions are just too dangerous.
As far as I know eles have the upper hand against a meditation guard.
Place 2 in SA for shadow’s embrace instead of mug, bette yet just switch to panic strike build 6/0/2/0/6 my favourite build.
I would really love to smack the crap out of guardians with a staff though
Yeah I agree a lot about movement speed when running d/d setup. There are actually a few more better choices for d/d build http://youtu.be/vmTybvMeAU4 check this out, if you take a look closer you’ll have almost permanent swiftness. Running 6 in crit would guarantee you higher burst but with this build it provides more in my perspective.

Not sure about mesmers but thief’s backstabs are definitely harder to pull off compared to rapid fire. Rangers pffffff takes no skill
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQRAqa4al0Mp3pdPx4J0PNRORtduFALIXrg3XxXsFA-TpBBwASOCAG3fAwBBoxJAocZAIPAAA Share this with a couple of thieves before and they seem to fancy it, hope you would too.
If he wants to duel you, play a cheese condi build! Engineers are weak to conditions, so you should be fine. Don’t forget to take the trait for condi cleanse on stealth, and confusion on Steal: a confused engi kills himself, especially if you land your condition just after he used his turret.
On d/p, your only chance is to NEVER get hit by Overcharged Shot. So try to use your #3 skill when he switches to rifle, and to be constantly jumping behind his back. But you’ll probably lose if your skill level i similar (unless you are both noobs, then the thief always have the advantage).
He lost a few rounds at the beginning when I was using my p/d cheese build but quickly caught up to my tactics and beat me continuously the few rounds afterwards after that I proceeded with changing different builds against him … In the end he still countered me in every way till I got on my engi. We were both equally skilled, we’re not the best but we get the job done when we’re in ranked.
Thief! under boob :0_ stealth and more bewbs… (Thieves guild) xD
It’s very likely that they’ll have the highest hp pool like necros n warriors. Think about it we’ve got 3 classes with a start of 10khealth,3 classes with 15k starting health and 2 classes with 18k… I’m terrified of revenants now.
Bahahahahaha transforms into a pet… Wth… Why don’t you just be a hamster and have a family with your pet hamster.
Wait fury can be stacked right? I’m honestly not sure, haven’t tried it yet. Stacked like 20%40%60% n so on
Freaking roll a charr man! They have hidden pistols :O- image it combined with rifles. Plus they just look super kitten when they’re equipped with double axes. War band!!!
This talent would be great if it wasn’t competing with executioner.
This ^
Critical Strikes already had 2 of the most important grandmaster traits for thiefs (executioner and Hidden Killer).
IP is currently an awesome trait, up to par with the two above, but the problem is WHY, why ANOTHER great grandmaster trait on CS?Sometimes it makes me wonder why IP isn’t on acrobatics?
Because it relies on ferocity for healing percentage and AB already has the redundant assassins’s reward however this trait can be upgraded with healing power then again it wouldn’t be worth it cause you need a huge load of that.
For WvW – Go full out cheese – p/d – d/p perplex cheese w/ 0/0/6/2/6. You can give engi’s a very strong run for their money and if not, you just walk away.
For sPvP – all comments above.
This build is really predictable:/
Sorry for the necro, but i have some thoughts i would like some inputs on. I know almost the same build have been posted on the forums before, but the take on it is a bit diffrent. And to be clear im talking wvw here.
We all know healing “counts more” with higher toughness, cuz you take less damage and you heal the same etc. So was thinking; could a Knight build work, or would the damage just be to low? You sacrifice alot of damage (some power and alot of ferocity) with this setup.
Ill post a full knights build here but it can be balanced out with zerker pices aswell. This would probably come off as a troll build (and i guess it is), but could it be viable in any part of the game? Roaming, scouting or in a zerg situation with SB “clusterbombmachinegunning” harassing backliners with S/D and so on?
Also, what runes to use, i posted pack but ogre will be a good option.
There is a few downfall with this build though, it’s nice that you’re looking into toughness and vitality buy once you’re pinned up against a heavy condition build 1on1 then they’ll have the upper hand. As a skilled thief the chances are high if you’re going to pick squishes and the “injured”. I can’t judge entirely about this build since I’ve never used it before due to every individual’s different diverse perspective. My opinion for you is to be cautious with conditions and the initiative control of this build. Remember poison will still effect your healing from invigorating precision, same goes to assassin’s reward.
That thief was pathetic lol
I thank you people for the feedbacks and I agree with what most of what you have stated but I really don’t want to use any conditions against engineers unless if it’s a hybrid build if not meh as I do prefer power over condition. I actually gave the p/d build a chance but my friend had a significant amount of condition removal surprisingly. As in matter of fact I do have an level 30 alt engineer then again I rarely get on it. Anyhow the whole point of this forum was to increase my chances of winning against one when I’m forced to face an engineer because I hate the fact that you absolutely have no chance when faced against a good one. Rock Paper Scissors… God… I loathe that idea. So I’ve gotta retreat when I face a good one while roaming(wvw)? kitten if I have to…:’( we have enough hard counters… Diamondback ele, medi guard, shout bow warrior, engineer and possibly the revenant.
(edited by Nephrite.6954)
No. We have been nerfed a lot since launch, but it looks like it has sort of stopped. Thief provide lots of utility and very high dps in PvE! Well played thieves can be a real asset to their team.
could you tell me what kind of utility a thief gives in pve?
Venom share screw you
Still have room for improvement dude. Keep it up! That mesmer though lol
Because before I played without SA, I’d still only be able to take on around two people.
Ok, so you ran away with your SA build, or why weren’t the 14 able to kill you?
Playing without SA teaches one how to be better at the thief because it requires the player to be better to survive in more difficult scenarios; ones which often a thief with SA will be dependent on SA’s ridiculous benefits to survive in and not through skilled play.
I already said that non SA builds have got other tools to survive f.e. interrupt which is “op” in 1vs1 or 1vs2 scenarios. So it’s a diffent playstyle but you have more/different tools as a non SA thief to stay alive. And just to say: Warriors have got passive condi removal, a lot of classes have got passive health regeneration. It’s great that you don’t like SA but that doesn’t make it “op”.
Ikr these kitten are pointing out all the thief’s advantages as OP. I mean that’s 70% of what we have that defines our class, stealth. So shouldn’t we be great and rewarded or using that trait line? Not to mention how much damage we have to sacrifice in order to use it’s full potential. Think about it you noobs, every class is gw2 will specialise at a specific trait and therefore that trait will has to be effective in order for one to use it for instance rangers are unbeatable archers thus they are rewarded for being marksmen by sniping people(longbow power ranger), guardians is the class that has the highest sustain in the game therefore squishes will have trouble against them and they have soo much sustain that they are able to balance their damage depending on their build, engineers are famous for explosives that’s why they are successful for high aoe condi burst etc ect you get the point. So before you whine about any class I suggest you play them first. Thieves aren’t OP, SA isn’t OP. Play the class before you state anything about it. You noobs should stop whining it’s seriously getting annoying.
Are you using the noob kitten power ranger build or the condi cheese trapper? Which one is it?
Wanna know how I have a blast levelling my engineer? Spvp XD purely spvp trust me on this.
Seeing this makes me depressed a bit, but I don’t really notice any problem with my thief against rangers. I play Spvp every day for 3-5 matches and I don’t really have any hard time with it anymore, well no where near as hard as when I first came back after the April 2014 patch.
There are bad players and good players, a lot of variation can happen. For example I hate turret engis and 2 days I ago, I took out a turret engi at enemy home single handly under 20s. I normally don’t have trouble with power necros and yesterday I couldn’t kill him with a teammate.
TL’DR
Don’t judge a class by individual players, know your class’s strength and weakness use them accordingly. The best class in the game is really not that much better than the worst class in the game. There can be a world of difference between a god tier player and bad player.
Thanks for stating that. Wait was the turret engi good? Or upscaled? :o I don’t have trouble with power necros only terrormancers, just bring a shortbow if you know you’re going against a powermancer. How? Use it to bait DS off. Till he’s out of he’s shell, spike him. Try not to step on marks, if he baits you by standing on marks cluster bomb him out of them or use choking gas. Avoid life blast at all cost either by Los or any evade frame #3 shortbow preferably for more control.
I was on my thief when an engineer friend of mine challenged me for a duel… You can tell how this went…:( it was humiliating. I run the standard d/p trickery thief. Any tips on handling engineers in general? Turret engis are an exception. Was thinking who better to ask than engineers themselves.
(edited by Nephrite.6954)
… I main a thief and rangers scare the kitten out of me whenever they get the “jump” first. I don’t get why you guys think thieves are hard to beat I mean come on we’re not, and stop saying we’re overpowered. We’re not overpowered, you’re just inexperienced. My tip for you is to learn about the class because rangers can easily counter thieves when played right. Take my word for it
I really hope this new expansion would give us a chance to redeem ourselves for duels(1v1). I honestly doubt it though
Look at that vid, point blank shot + rapid fire on a condition build (a clean opener from a power ranger will take about 18k) takes out approx. 50% of a thieF’s hp, rapid fire tracks through stealth and can not be dodged the proectiles will follow you while you are dodging and still hit you, you can also not teleport to avoid the shots because the proectiles still track you even if you teleport behind the ranger (watch the fight at the cliff by the sentinel ne of sm castle closely to get the best example for this). Burning is the only really dangerous condition the ease with which it is applied basically forces permant cleansing without a lot of stealth and investment into shadow arts the thief will not be able to keep up with this.
Those thieves did not understand what hit them and even if they did their builds are inadequate to handle this ranger.
To answer your question: Yes, thieves are that weak, you need more knowledge about the other proffessions to be successful as a thief and you have absolutely zero room for error. This is how we pay for our unique resource system and the utility we can have. The only proffession that is weaker than thieves is mesmer that is how mesmers pay for their unique mechanic and their lockdown potential.
Face it obectively thieves and mesmers suck, the ones playing at “high level” spvp (haha balanced pvp, play chess if you want that) get carried by their team both professions are played for style reasons and the players doing decent with those two proffessions would do way better with guardian, warrior or engineer.
Yeah I wreck people whenever I get on my engineer due to the amount of training I get on from my thief XDlol anyway this “dedicated ranger” has compilations of beating all classes in the game on his cheese made ranger. Check out he’s channel. Weird how we don’t see thieves do something like this. Guess there’s a reason for that.
I prefer “Thiff”
Lol this comment.
Wait why not evade and hit them with rifle stock which dazed them or stun
Different answers from different people. Overall it all comes down to to strategic gameplay to have a good fight.
Most SA thieves are also bad and do not comprehend the basics of damage avoidance/skill/encounter interactions due to SA acting as a crutch for their lack of playing ability.
This is true. My current WvW spec is 6/0/2/0/6. Lots of control and good damage, and much more difficult to play than SA builds. Shadow Arts is the main problem regarding players thinking thief is OP. It is too rewarding simply because it make bad thieves look good and good thieves are just invincible with such a build…
Yeah I started disliking full SA playstyle ever since I couldn’t really hurt any good players due to the lack of damage and by the time I’m don in stealth my enemy will either be healed or done with their cool downs. I’m using 06206 d/p now, it’s not easy but I prefer(wvw) it.
I think hard counters should exist, but this is like banging your head into a wall.
WRONG!!!
GW2 is NOT a MOBA. It will never be one.
Hard counters in an MMO PvP is the dumbest thing ever.
They hard counters us on point 1v1 fights. What we have is mobility. We can easily outmaneuver them. By simply avoiding them in team fights and blowing up other professions we can still be viable, even with a medi guard around. They beat us in 1v1 fights, but they are so slow between nodes! We can just leave and go +1 a fight. By the time the guardian show up we have probably won that fight already ^^
Nah dude it’s not always like that, keep in mind that a lot of good guardians use travel runes and they know how to manage their mobility even if we’re fast we’ll only beat them by a few seconds.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAsYVl0MptplNx0J0PRhTBxVA8uFrIGa13O3wEA-TpBBwAAeAAUOEAF3fYzRAocZAInAAA Here’s another if you favour trickery over panic strike and I highly recommend you pick corrosive trap over mug because your teammates will hit them harder it’s still a condition though therefore it could be removed.

People seem to be under the impression that needle trap must be dropped beforehand hoping the enemy steps on it. You can in fact drop it as you are engaged directly on the enemy. The activation time is equal to that of cNd slice and cripple and it is unblockable.
Your build, with panic strike has a whole lot of Immobs. Now add Devourer venom in there along with that needle trap.
Yup^^ with infiltrators strike you’ll chances are increased.

I used to play this build back when I discovered the trap build. I like it but you are veeeery vulnerable against condi builds, however power build are not a problem. Nice one though, keep the creativity coming!
Yeah this build focuses on controlling the fight and adding as much pain as possible on melee range. Yes this build is quite vulnerable towards condi builds that’s why you have to try your best to get in stealth another problem about this build would be chasing down your enemies when their hp pool is above 50% or when panic strike is on a cool down.

I’m really glad that others have also experienced this. I thought it might just be me.
Just stay positive and perfect your play:) defeating other classes may be difficult but not impossible I’m sure of it.
