Oil single handedly stalls a group from siegeing a gate for a good minute or two. How is that in anyway useless…?

Just because you aren’t wracking up kills from it =/= serves no purpose.

Yeah, the oil itself is useful simply by its presence.
That doesn’t mean Oil Mastery will be at all useful.
No one builds anything on the gate while the oil is up, so points in making the oil better are a waste.

Yea, I agree with this. I always build oil, but I do it because I know it means if it gets golem rushed they are going to take a few secs to destroy the oil first, its a delay tool.

But I agree, I can imagine several better uses of development time. But will you agree with my top uses and I with yours?

But this time they also did a lot of nice things! The API for server-infos is great, ascended gear for WvW play sounds good, new match-making is a very urgent matter on my agenda (after being stuck in a match we dominated for 10 weeks), skill-laags seem to reduce a bit. So why not also some fun with oil

The ascended gear is months behind, if they just planed to give us the same as what was already out there, then why didn’t it come out in November when promised? A new piece would have been nice, imo, though I suppose something is better then nothing.

I am not sure the match making is going to be any better myself, given that the game is entirely about coverage there is really a limit to what you can do that will not create blowout’s matches, but we shall see how it rolls out.

1) You never saw a bunch of golems dying in forgotten oil? There are some funny youtube videos about that.

2) This is an advertisement not a patch note, this is written by an advertisement designer and not by a player/game designer. It contains as many useful information as any other advertisement

I am not sure we should use events of stupidity as a basis for what makes a mastery useful or not.

Even if it is an advertisement, it still represents two new abilities being added that are completely worthless. Each of those abilities represents design/development time that could be better spent on useful aspects of WvW, real changes.

When you actually need oil and it would be good to use it, it is useless. Tower/keep walls are designed so poorly there is no way to fight from them and there is no way to stand there using oil while taking as much damage as you do. Unless the mastery makes you immune to damage or ANET gets around to actually improving WvW in a meaningful way (not just tweaking siege every patch) the mastery will be useless to take, imo.

Then the guard defense. Who cares about guard damage? Most people play this game in a giant ball and guards are just steam rolled anyways. If you are playing small group and soloing camps/etc then you still are likely geared enough you wouldn’t care about guard damage. Let’s say the new ranks double it and it is up to a massive 10% (lol) wow… I just saved myself 50 damage on that hit. Why would anyone care about that? Take 50 less damage a hit, or do 25% more damage on some OP piece of siege along with extended range or new ability… tough call.

Perhaps there are more additions then they list, but considering this is marketing I would think these would be the ‘best’ of the lot and frankly they are an absolute joke. When are we going to get some abilities that are useful for those of us that have no interest in the boredom that is siege?

Until they remove kill tagging system for earn WXP it is a worthless joke and the only thing they are doing here is making it even easier to get, and thus more worthless.

Dangerous New WvW Abilities
Yay more kitten siege mastery crap, and on oil the most worthless siege of all since the walls are made so poorly there is no way to use the oil and not die in 10 seconds. More ranks in defense against guards…. who comes up with this stuff? Whoever it is should play WvW a bit. Pro tip, no one cares about damage from guards.

WvW Matchup Changes!
Have to see how it works, but to me this seems like it is just going to create blowouts, some server will dominate or be dominated based on being in a tier they should not. When you create a system where coverage is so important, mixing up servers seems like a bad idea.

Introducing Infusions and Ascended Gear in WvW
Thank you for giving us rings and amulets after we have all long since earned them via the other methods. Why is WvW not getting something unique and more importantly if you were just giving us rings and amulets why the kitten didn’t it come out in November when you promised it?

I am looking for a good patch, a WvW patch that actually improves the game for those of us that have no interest in spamming 1-3 on a piece of siege, those of desperately wanting quality play. I want my friends to come back to the game because a patch wow’s them. This patch looks just as junky as the last two.

If you really think that, you’re doing it wrong. PPT is ~90% population\coverage and has nothing to do with how well anyone actually plays. Stressing over the things you cannot control (population\coverage) is what leads to servers falling apart.

Who said I stressed over it? I have won a single match in maybe 7 or more months, specifically and by choice. I long since gave up playing for PPT for the above noted reason. I would however like to play for PPT if it meant something and thus my post.

I don’t understand that philosophy.

If a server receives an influx of players, which puts them on par with the servers above them, why is that a bad thing?

If a sports team lands the high-price, big name free agent, are they then “tainted” because they didn’t do it with less talent?

If the game is about coverage, and someone decides to address that issue, why are they badmouthed for trying?

In my view every time you get lots of transfers you end up robbing a server of its sense of achievement, its ability to measure growth and progression for a period of time. DB got to T2 on its own muscle, but because of transfers it never got to see how that version of the server stacked up in T2, to test how much they had improved since the last time they played FA and TC.

Your team analogy in my opinion misses the mark because you are not recruiting talent, you are recruiting coverage. If that same team started playing with an extra player on the field, how much respect would they get?

The overall sense of accomplishment in this game, the value of PPT, is always going to be diminished as long as it continues to be about getting more instead of getting better. We are fighting over points that are more impacted by coverage then strategy, how is that rewarding?

I use the team analogy, because as you pointed out, coverage = talent in this system.

It’s not my ideal scenario, but that’s what it is.

It is entirely feasible for a server to increase talent, by getting better, and progress up the ranks without increasing their coverage. While they both may achieve the same goal they are not equal because one has much higher intrinsic value, ie respect, then the other.

For the record we went from T6 to T3 with relatively few transfers. It’s just now that everyone’s starting to like us. =D

I would say you got to T2 with relatively few transfers, given that the transfers started to occur when you were set to go to T2.

Flipping things
Map hopping on defense

Hiding in keeps
Ninja flipping keeps
Zerg v Zerg
Squad v Squad
Small scale PvP
Map chat banter
VOIP banter
JP’s
JP PvP
Map completion (yes even this)
Scouting
Sentrying
Loot bags
PPT meta
Server-wide coordination
Tons more I’m probably forgetting

Notice, ticking siege is not in that list. It’s just a chore like taking out the garbage irl, but this is a game, not irl, stuff like that isn’t supposed to be in it.

I know it probably exists to solve some technical issue or other, but if there’s any other less-fun replacement solution that’s viable, please consider adding it to your todo list.

For the next 2 weeks I’m in California on vacation and most of CO is going through training while I’m gone and may not be fielding everyday like we normally do.

I heard he is actually running drugs while away. DB lost by 10k points and is now behind after one day, its time for the guild to transfer and he needs to earn $10k USD to do it.

I don’t want to completely ruin the surprise but you should hear something big from us in the coming weeks about this very topic.

You forgot to tell them to ask again next month to hear an even more obscure answer.

D’oh! You caught me there. Let me spruce it up some. In the coming weeks, nay months, you’ll see many changes to WvW. We should have something to announce regarding the matchmaking in the coming weeks. If you aren’t happy with those changes, I’ll be more surprised than the Imperial Japanese Army was by Marshal Georgy Zhukov at the battle of Nomonhan. I think that fits the criteria. Sort of.

Credibility is zero. My guess is that we get more and more powerful siege, because that is all that seems to change with WvW.

Devon did state in a post somewhere a couple of weeks ago that they were going to make changes to the wvwvw matchups. However in light of the recent patches, I wouldn’t get my hopes up

Pretty sure they said they were making changes to the red/green/blue issue, not the match-ups.

A lot of the tiers have pretty distinct cut off points, where the bottom of the tier above would dominate the tier below, specially if you at the same time are mixing in a server from the tier below that. One up, one down system is a grass is greener view that will be worse then what we have now, and does not address the topic of the conversation, boredom.

Most faction based MMO’s have had static match-ups, including DAoC, so I am not sure why folks are focusing on that as a magical solution to boredom. The game is boring because it is not challenging, we are fighting over nothing and there is no meaningful rewards.

PPT/Tiers is a flawed system because for the most part you have no control over it and the success of PPT/Tier is entirely based on coverage and population. The solution to a tough tier is for one or more server to recruit more people. How does anyone value that as a goal?

Play for your server pride? Free transfers has created a transfer culture in this game and server pride means less then in any faction based game that I have played. Some servers can still claim server pride, and perhaps there is a core on every server that plays for server pride, but the fast majority are content to wreck server/match-ups to transfer the moment anything gets rough or tough.

WXP is a joke. It rewards tagging and taking undefended objectives. The rewards are either boring snooze fest items, or they reward you to not actually play your character and instead play the siege class of your choice.

So really what are we fighting over? It’s like we jumped on the hamster wheel and we just keep going around because there is nothing else to do, which lead’s to eventual boredom and burnout. Zerging does not present a challenge to the vast majority of the players involved. They can be auto pilot waching TV and still participating in the zerg at an effective level.

If I was going to suggest changes, keeping in mind that ANET has largely shown themselves incapable or unwilling to make big changes to WvW I would focus on two things:

1) Leave the PPT in tact, but break the numbers down into 3, 8 hour time blocks. Your server points are still the same as now, but it is reported not just as a total, but totals for different time periods. This would make fighting for PPT in your time block more rewarding and meaningful. This does not change the overall issues with PPT and importance of population/coverage, but its a small step into making it more meaningful. PPT for just my time block that I play is significantly more important to me then PPT that is effected by events that happen when I am sleeping. It would also require very little effort on the part of ANET, in fact maybe if we all asked MOS could do it themselves.

2) Make groups important. Most buffs, combo field triggers, heals, condition removals, etc should all be changed to effecting your group only. At the same time everyone in the game should be allowed to start a squad and the game should have a raid frame style setup for the squad. I should be able to manage my squad, see everyone in it, move folks to make balanced groups, see everyone’s vital stats, see their debuffs, etc.

These two changes in my opinion would be turn this game around by increasing quality of play and giving us more to fight for.

If JQ stabilizes, it’s going to take a massive collapse of either TC or FA (and at least two weeks of demolishing them) for DB to move out.

Things tend to snowball, hopefully JQ does stabilize, but most servers do not. Too many guilds that like to be carried and bail at the first sign of hardship.

Small gang roaming WvW. Where to start?

I have a few toons, my newest and favorite being the Thief. I would really like to use it to get into small gang roaming, and strategic play. Also working on a Mes for the same reasons. So how can I find more small team play? Any Havoc/Roaming Guilds out there? Need help please.

A bunch transferred to T8, but I would make sure you have a spot in a guild before you transfer.

Do a bunch of soloing on your own and watch for folks on your server running small group and see if you can run with them a few times when they do and see if you mesh with the group. If your good they will typically recruit you as they always need good folks.

In my opinion for small group play, 5v10+ kind of thing, a thief is mediocre class and the mesmer would serve you better. Thief can work, but it doesn’t bring as much to the table.

why did anet feel a REAL need to invest dev time on a new feature that literally no one has asked for?

Almost everybody asked for more tactics and less zerging and a lot os people have complained about the invisibility by thiefs.

The traps give the option for more tactics and to do something about the invisibility. It might help a little against zerging but not a lot I think.

So basically many people asked for it. The problem is the implementation is not so good and because of the the traps do not give what they should give. But if that got fixed and the traps would be cheaper they will be a good tool. So the traps are not the problem, there implementation is.

I think the problem is this does nothing for more tactics. It discourages small group play, at least as far as objectives requiring siege go, and adds extremely minimal tactics in other areas.

We want more tactics in the ‘fighting’ and patch after patch, change after change, all we see is more tactics involving siege and crud. What about our skills and abilities, the things that make our characters unique and different.

Just another MMO kittening away their potential by catering to the average.

What are you talking about?
Back during the whole “Isle of Jaspenwood” thing, we had a lot more courtesy regarding your transfers than you’re having about ours.

Every post coming out of FA is just “Dragonwagon this” or “Brandwagon that”,
Show some class and get over it.

I think the comments are more about those transferring, recently transferred, then DB itself. In many ways they are separate entities.

Any guilds on DB who may be willing to step it up with an amazing group in JQ are more than welcome to explore the possibilities. I had a couple hours on JQBL last night with EMP and some others, and it was an amazingly good time holding a paper garrison from numbers twice or three times our size. It’s starting to feel again like it should. I logged off smiling and would be quite happy to share that experience with other guilds looking for real T1 combat.

According to RE they were the best of EMP, and since they are rather mediocre, how would transferring to JQ help?

It’s hard to believe that a game with so much promise has come to this. There is ZERO reason play this game for much longer than it takes to do the daily. The reward system is completely boinked.

Watch the small squad stream on the GW2 twitch channel. Now you have to assume that when ANET decided to do a small squad stream they picked someone they thought was good at it… so lets say he is one of the better PvPers in their office… now consider the state of WvW and it all becomes clear.

I think it is sad that people are stepping up to say there is so much more to it, what a joke. Stacking and blasting combo fields is not tactical brilliance, stacking and running out of sight and then hitting them in the flank, not tactical brilliance, stacking and then stealthing or using portals, not tactical brilliance. Telling everyone to wear PVT, not tactical brilliance.

I cannot think of a single faction based PvP game that has as low a skill cap to succeed as this game and as a result the zerg game is not forced to be better, to do better. The solution to all is better coverage, to recruit more, bigger zergs, more and more people.

In fairness the game does not actually provide the tools. Squads having no raid frames, no ability to organize and balance your groups, to create inner squad coordination. Every buff, cleanse, heal being just random splash on the closest targets with no group preference. Downed system.

I am fine with people running around in 70+ people zergs, if that is fun for you that is fine by me, just stop pretending it is more than it is.

I can care less of how WXP gets distributed, I think the focus of this thread is we hope it can be distributed equally though.

It is not distributed equally in the current system because tagger > everyone else. Regardless of role, solo or in a group, if you are doing your job and focusing on that, you earn less WXP then someone that focuses on tags.

The original suggestion just focuses on the difference in the people to the right of the >, not the greater imbalance of the people that just tag.

If it stays the way it is now, everyone that tags get’s the same amount, which already devalues WXP too a meaningless level, then I would be opposed to the suggestion because it is already to easy to get WXP, making it so everyone in group gets it because one person in that group gets a tag… just too excessive, imo.

Overall how you earn WXP has made it meaningless to me personally so I am not sure why people even care that much? Outside of a few OP siege masteries the abilities are junk and since WXP rank directly correlates to how much of a zerger you are, what is the rush to have more?

Why should players who “tag” as many targets as they can in a zerg fight get more WXP than the ones who cant "tag’ as many targets due to dropping CC and healing?

Every one should be treated equal, every one should be offered the same amount, regardless if they DPS or Support.

What about the other principles?

Why should someone running around tagging things get more WXP then the people that are actually fighting and making sure people die? If I do 90% of the damage to someone and thus not tagging a bunch of other people, I get less WXP then the people that are tagging and doing a few % damage to a bunch of targets.

Obviously it is my choice to focus someone down and make sure they die rather then worry about tagging, just as it is my choice to focus on support and not worry about tagging, when I play a support role.

If your sole purpose in a ZvZ battle is to DPS than I would assume you are a good+ DPS character, I would hope so atleast. Therefore, by that premise you should be able to burn down 2 people by the time I get my second CC off (before I even go to “tagging”). Then while your working on your third I should be getting my last CC off, than I need to heal, by that time you should be finishing off your 4th kill. I would assume some of your DPS skills are AoE as well, so its safe to say you should get credit for at least 4 kill, while I am working on my first one.

Why are you comparing against support, when my statement was in reference to a tagger? I never said support has equal capacity for tagging, I am saying that anyone playing the role of Support or DPS and are focusing on doing their jobs will get less WXP then someone that just focuses on tagging.

The principle of the system is broken and strongly favor’s farming the system rather then actually having an impact in the fight. Changing it so that a group gets full credit for the separate actions of each of its members, just makes it even easier to farm the system, imo.

Overall how you earn WXP has made it meaningless to me personally so I am not sure why people even care that much? Outside of a few OP siege masteries the abilities are junk and since WXP rank directly correlates to how much of a zerger you are, what is the rush to have more?

Its the principle…

Why should players who “tag” as many targets as they can in a zerg fight get more WXP than the ones who cant "tag’ as many targets due to dropping CC and healing?

Every one should be treated equal, every one should be offered the same amount, regardless if they DPS or Support.

What about the other principles?

Why should someone running around tagging things get more WXP then the people that are actually fighting and making sure people die? If I do 90% of the damage to someone and thus not tagging a bunch of other people, I get less WXP then the people that are tagging and doing a few % damage to a bunch of targets.

Obviously it is my choice to focus someone down and make sure they die rather then worry about tagging, just as it is my choice to focus on support and not worry about tagging, when I play a support role.

If WXP is changed to be proportional to the amount of contribution/dmg to the kill, then sure I am all in favor of your suggestion, because I agree with the base issue.

If it stays the way it is now, everyone that tags get’s the same amount, which already devalues WXP too a meaningless level, then I would be opposed to the suggestion because it is already to easy to get WXP, making it so everyone in group gets it because one person in that group gets a tag… just too excessive, imo.

I shouldn’t have to explain this but the quote is in reference to T1 servers saying the hope DB implodes…. Where CO comes into the picture or where they transfer to really have nothing to do with that quote.

I don’t think people are understanding that this stream wasn’t really for.. well.. anyone that commented in this thread.
It’s a beginners guide for the PvE crowd that find RvR type experiences a bit overwhelming. Bear in mind the VAST majority of users paying Arenanet’s mortgage have never done anything like this, and giving them a clue about party sized objectives is a wonderful idea.

And on a side note: Finding thieves to be god-mode is a user error.

If you are a PvE person that finds WvW overwhelming, do you think think small squad play is the best first step to WvW? One of the few, in my opinion, good reasons for zerg’s to exist, is they provide a supportive, easy to access introduction to WvW. Not so much is riding on you personally, so you can afford to make mistakes and you are surrounded by people you can learn from.

So that said what is the point in streaming a small squad video intended for beginners? Small squad is where you go after you are comfortable with WvW and want to try different ways to play WvW, imo.

Consider the lack of changes to WvW since release I am not sure the point in suggesting a bunch of complex changes to the game and maps? In my opinion most of your suggestions would change nothing and the issue is not the ‘role’ of small group’s, it’s getting people to actually play in small groups. The role is there, but when your entire reward structure favors not playing that way, no one plays that way.

ANET had the opportunity to make WvW more diverse and rewarding for all play types when they released the WXP system, instead they did the bare minimum and made a system that encouraged zerging even more. Their system is a joke.

We need changes, not really big ones, to current game systems to encourage quality play. If I was going to start somewhere it would be with the squad system. We need raid frames or whatever you want to call it. A squad system where you can see everyone and their vital information, be able to form organized groups within the squad, etc. Not just for commanders either, anyone should be able to form a squad.

This would have no real balance impacts on the game, but I think would make a profound difference in how people play the game.

We all eventually make the switch away from clicking if you play long enough, and then you will see and understand what is wrong with clicking.

Well, its indeed possible that your expirience in games is greater than mine, but so far there wasnt a single MMO (including GW1) where players produced better results with just buttons rather than with buttons+mouse clicks… though its already off-topic, so lets just stop.

And that was demonstrated how? Make the change to zero clicking and then come back to me after a few months playing that way and tell me you are going back to clicking because it is better.

Be better if they just remove rally from the downed system in WvW, this way low levels wouldn’t be as big a risk to have along.

Ultimately low levels do not need to be a hindrance, if the people playing them use half a clue. When I leveled up I made sure I played a defensive spec, ran with large groups so my limitations could be mitigated, and I rarely died before most of the zerg. I focused on CC, utility and support which were not as impacted by my low stats, making it much more effective then if I had gone damage.

Cant see what wrong with clicking… i click my utility skills, coz its uncomfortable to press buttons, and i sometimes click weapon skills as well, when im using all my fingers to move my char…. and for targeting too, but not in GW2 since its extremly hard to target anything with mouse here

Folks need to stop listening to clicker boy, his play was poor and some of his comments and advice were just wrong. If a thief, regardless of spec, is tying up a 5 man group, then the 5 man group is at fault and need to sit down and think about their builds, gear and their synergy.

Since when should 5 people need to theorycraft their characters to beat 1? And playing a thief is not hard. If it was hard to do what that thief did then I could understand but I’ve seen keyboard turning “clicker boys” as you say killing 3-4 people in videos they’ve posted themselves.

The state of that class in WvW is beyond ridiculous.

I did not say five people ‘should’ need to do that, I said those five people should do that because clearly it is needed in their case which is more a statement about them, then the thief they are fighting.

Hello all,

I started playing GW2 right when it came out. I played for about a month, ran WvW every day or so – and then learned how boring and dull it became, and quit.

Is it all still the same? WvW back then was group vs door, take the keep – move on to the next keep, and continue on doing that all day. It was very lackluster, and there was no purpose.

What changes have been made that make it worth it to return?

In my opinion the game has move backwards since release, the only real positive change has been the removal of culling.

An elementalist commenting on the thief having everything is funny. Elementalist is by far a more rounded class for all play types, while a thief has a narrower applicability to group play.

I wouldn’t worry about it to much, its basically one mediocre transfer guild spouting off, do not think it impacts your class levels.

Ascended Gear... none again?

To buy ascended rings: Must obtain WvW rank of 40 or better. Each item costs 1000 badges.
To buy ascended Amulet: Must obtain WvW rank of 50 or better. 2000 badges per amulet.
To buy ascended accesories: Mut obtai WvW rank of 50 or better. 1000 badges laurels per.

Rank means nothing and should not be used as a basis for purchasing gear. All having a higher rank means is that you zerg a lot, good at tagging kills and zerging down objectives. Like the system didnt already reward horrible play enough, making it a requirement of ascended gear will be the death nail on quality play in this game.

Thieves: The main thing I wanted to get across with thieves was not meant to be a commentary on balance but just on how you spend your time. There are many builds set up to be defensive and with good evasion and positioning you can run a group around in circles no matter what profession you are. If you let 1-2 people run your group around in circles and get a lucky kill here or there your letting the enemy tie you up when you could move on to another objective.

The problem being, there’s nothing you can do to stop the thief (or thieves) from following you to your objective and having a major effect on the outcome of what you’re trying to accomplish.

This. I’d really like an answer to this problem. Also, given that thieves are apparently able to tie up 5-6 people at once, and pick a few of them off if they keep fighting the thief, where does that leave non-thief solo roamers?

Can’t say I’ve seen a successful siege at that location on Hills. That’s a fun spot to troll people who try though.

That spot is stupid and it makes me wonder about his play level if he thinks a tiny ledge that you have to jump to and that can be AoE’d from above is the best choice.
