Guards irrelevant to Guard WXP upgrades

If you are going to kitten and moan about the stats, then at least come up with some ideas and solutions on providing at least ONE WXP ability that someone that does not use siege would want to put points in.

There is 11 abilities of which over half are specific to siege.

The remaining five are:
- usekitten nus to damage against guards that no one needs or cares about
- useless decrease in damage taken by guards that no one needs or cares about
- useless decrease in damage taken and increase in damage given to faction mobs that folks care even less about then the guard ones.
- siege defense which provides so little bonus it is not even worth considering an ability
- extra supply that costs a fortune for extremely low return

The only thing useful to those of us that do not use siege are those stats and they cost 115 points. Granted if you play on a giant zerg server that can steam roll around taking objectives and tagging kills without much effort, 115 points may not be much, for everyone else it takes a bit of time.

The whole situational argument is a joke. Most fights take place near or within spitting distance of an objective with siege. AC’s and Ballista’s are dropped at almost every medium sized encounter.

Why do you need stat increases? These were added to make your characters have a certain specialty tell me what added stats is a specialty of?

Why do you need your Arrow Carts to hit harder and farther and with poison?

Defensive or offensive stats are a specialty as much as deciding what siege weapon is most OP to master in.

I like to move in combat. I like to use my character’s abilities. I like having to know the abilities of my opponents. Siege is boring to me, its all the same, no learning and largely can be resolved with ‘do not stand in red circle’. Why is the WXP system only providing progress for those that enjoy siege?

I absolutely agree with you arK there should be no stat increase for any ability!

So what exactly do those of us that do not enjoy using siege bother to spend our points in? I do not need help killing guards, I certainly do not need help defending against their attacks, so the only point of those two abilities is their stat increases. Mercenary Bane, what a joke. Siege bunker…. oo a whole 5% decrease in damage! 300 points for 5 more supply, no thanks.

You may be takling about another night, RE doesnt loose against evenly manned fights, atleast not open feild fights. Not even SoR would fight us without Arrow Carts in the open field. Not trying to sound kitteny, but I havent seen a FA Zerg during primetime with merely 35 people in it. RE wipes, FA has wiped us but I have yet to see a WvW guild that can wipe RE as a guild with even numbers.

RE is a mediocre zerg guild. Nothing special or unique and certainly not in the top 10 that I have fought against. If you were half as good as you think you are you wouldn’t be riding the coat-tails of an already successful server now would you.

Oh another “bandwagon” post?
<removed boring life story>
So were not riding on any coat tails here my freind, we are just glad to not be depended on so much like we have in the past. Glad to have a stable server.

I never said anything at all about bandwagon. A guild that is good, likes challenges, doesn’t transfer to well established servers. A mediocre guild that wants to be carried does.

Not sure if you have always been on FA or not, but being on a server where your guild is the only large WvW focused guild, is not a challenge, it feels so stressful and demanding, much more than what you experience with stable servers.

We felt this two times, both times from T8 to T2. You must have had the priveledge of never feeling that, of never feeling directly responsible for putting in 12-18 hour days for your server. Of never recieving the comment, “Your in RE, arent you supposed to be in WvW?”

We envy you, and people like you who have never been through those situations. Thats why we are here.

Your life is so hard, how do you get up in the morning?

Let me try and sum up the boring history of RE. You were on Darkhaven, carried to T2 by its off-hour population and stalled, so you bandwagoned to KN which once again was carried by an off-hour population to T2 where it once again stalled. You then transferred to TC, a server with arguably the 4th best/even coverage in the game, and now your here talking smack and going on about your hardship?

People/guilds on servers that have lost almost every match since release, they have hardship. Your hardship is like telling hungry people that you ate to much and your stomach hurts. Enjoy the coat-tails.

Actually as far as I can tell WvW was designed for everyone BUT good players, so you should be ok.

The issue in my opinion with up-levels is not their level, it’s how they play as an up-level. Play your class in a way that works with the up-level system and you can contribute in a meaningful way, or do what most do and play a pure DPS build in crud gear dying in three hits. Seem’s like an obvious choice, but the bar is pretty low in WvW.

Niim.9260

And that is different then custom arena’s or sPvP how? You will actually get what you want there while in WvW it is up to the luck of the draw and who is on that day on if you will get what you want.

sPvP is a static, point based environment, it is not similar at all, even our toons do not play the same in sPvP.

Roaming play in WvW is about variety and the surprise. Everything from build to numbers is different, and because it is different your own build and group composition must be tailored to handle a wide assortment of situations, not a set static setup based on a given map like in sPvP.

I have no issues with zergs, I think they are an important part of the game. I have issues with a game that does not promote people moving beyond the zerg, advancing their play to add strategy and tactics to the game. PvP is about competitive play, even in WvW.

What am I supposed to care about?

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

I have always thought WvW lacked ‘care factor’ but this seems to have gotten worse, not better, with the recent changes. What are we as servers fighting over, what is the point? Where is the competition? Yes we all go out and play for the ‘fight’, but I can do that in any PvP game.

Obviously the rankings is supposed to be what we fight over, striving to be the #1 server in NA. Unfortunately ANET’s position on coverage, free transfers, etc has made rankings more about coverage and population than good play and strategy and thus it became an unimportant achievement for most players. I would guess outside of the top 1-4 servers, there is very few people that even think about being #1. So while this was bad before, now it seems even more silly given that BG is taking #1 spot because of match-up RNG rewarding them with more glicko then SoR. I do not play on BG but it seems like the sense of accomplishment of becoming #1 would be greatly diminished in this system.

Rankings were at least a bit important in the old system as far as your tier placement, as it dictated who you would be fighting. I never cared about being #1 server, but I did care about having a competitive match, so I would watch and my interest in PPT would vary based on the likelihood of changing who we would fight the following week. The match-up RNG has removed this aspect entirely.

Rivalries were something that drove battles and competition, in my opinion more so then most anything else in this game. Long periods of fighting the same opponents helped build those rivalries. While I am not opposed to some mixing of the fights, the new system has no real capacity for big rivalries, imo.

So that leaves the ‘match’, fighting to win the match, get the most PPT. This is something worth fighting for in a close match, of which we have 1 in all of north america, in a blow out it is as unimportant as anything else.

So as I see it we have a RNG lottery that might give one match-up a reason to care about PPT, once per week. The rest of the week we just try and get the most personal entertainment we can out of a lopsided match.

One up and one down solves some problems but creates a bunch more. Including that it invalidates ratings entirely. It no longer takes into account quality of victory but simply uses the fact of victory to move a server out of the matchup they were previously in.

Ratings have long since been invalidated entirely by ANET’s approach to population and coverage. Before your change in the system folk’s cared about rating only so far as it pertains to giving them a competitive match, now thakittens random on such a wide variance, rating is even more invalid then before.

The other day I was getting hit by Arrowcarts and I ran around looking for them and none could be found. <—-Please explain that also.

You are invulnerable in your invulnerable area, but do you see that buff on your siege? No, so your siege is not invulnerable, in fact if you want to talk about exploits you might think about how you are getting the siege placed in the invulnerable area in the first place

I am sure they are invisible arrowcarts being fired by invisible ninja’s from within your invulnerable area, while camping all five exits from the spawn.

Aww and does the fan boy have any ‘brilliant’ ideas of how to beat zergs 3 times your number? Tactics? I’m sure they work on the downed state/AOE cap.

And what if you destroy the siege? You will still be rolled into oblivion over and over with larger zergs. But hey..I’m sure your fanboyism is right and everyone here hating the zergs is wrong about these magical mechanisms that Anet has given us to combat zergs.

Did you know the top 3 servers are the ones with the least population? Oh wait..they are not..

lol ‘fan boy’ have you checked my post history? My view of ANET and WvW is well documented, go ahead and have a look.

Server Match up is terrible

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

that’s why niim anet needs to move the goalposts from overall server points in a match to the rating system entirely.

If all that matters now in matchmaking is your server rating than servers should be playing for rating over overall points. Previously you had to win your tier over and over again to move up, now you just have to siphon points away from other servers by doing better than anticipated.

Move the goalposts anet in the UI to emphasize server rating.

Great theory, only no one cares about rating. All most servers play for is a competitive match. Sure one might argue that the servers in rank 1-3 might have played for rating, maybe even some of 4-6, but the other 18 servers not even a little bit. Do you think those players stuck with those servers because they thought they were going to push for #1? The only reason rating mattered to most people in ratings 4-24 was how it impacted your chance at a competitive and entertaining match.

The WvW system’s greatest failing in my opinion is the profound lack of anything meaningful to fight over. Population and coverage drive the ratings system, because of ANET policies, and as such the vast majority of the player base simply stopped caring about it.

This change does nothing for that. It removes a few issues with the glicko system where a server might get trapped in a tier, a situation that impacted what 2-3 servers in all of EU and NA? In return ratings are no longer a predictable way to ensure a competitive match, and thus are even more meaningless then before, and we get more variety.

Perhaps more variety is enough of a reason, but I fail to see why having a small variance in match options to start is not a better approach then the wide open miss-match that is currently occurring.

Server Match up is terrible

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

The concept of tiers has little meaning at this point and you should try to stop thinking of matchups in those terms. Servers are matched up by proximity of rating, not proximity of “tier”.

Nice spin, tiers are nothing but a grouping of ratings by proximity, a way of identifying what a match-up would have been via the old system. Why should players not be using it as a comparison between the old and new systems?

What I think ANET fails to realize is that blow outs cause people to leave the game. The matches are frustrating for those being camped, its boring for those on the winning end, its really only enjoyable for those on the losing servers that enjoy target rich environments.

A full week of a boring or frustrating match means people stop logging in, they go do something else and every time that occurs some of those folks just do not bother coming back. Eventually a guild will lose critical mass resulting in a bunch of other folks quitting.

I fail to see why the rating differences between matches cannot start a lot tighter and be expanded as needed, rather then the stupidity we are seeing now.

This is turning into a sad state for WvW if match ups like these continue to occur.

Everyone pointed out this kind of thing was going to occur, their own example of JQ vs KN indicated it was going to occur, but then Jon posted that it would be rare and that all is right in the world, and yet here we are.

Small Mans Encouraged, Mindless Zergs Not?

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

Also, as much as the roamers and small scale fighters refuse to admit it, there is a skill involved in being a good large scale fighting team, the same as there is for small scale. It’s just a different skill set. If it were only based off of who presses 1 the hardest, you wouldn’t see certain guilds or commanders win the vast majority of their encounters.

Numbers plays a big part of those ‘vast majorities’ imo, but the other part is the commander. Being a good commander takes a lot of skill. For everyone else in the big giant zergball, what skill? Wearing PVT is not a skill. Stacking and blasting combo fields when told, is not a skill. Following a commander is not a skill, though given how many people fail at this maybe it should be.

In a zerg of 70 people though how many are actually using skill? The commander, maybe 5 or so other key people in the zerg, let’s say10%, more in a guild zerg. The rest are more or less following orders with little to no thought and I see this day after day while running with the zerg.

The issue with WvW as it stands right now is that the skill cap is exceedingly low, it is far to easy to run around playing with a giant zerg and not really get any better at the game.

Learning a game, like everything else, is largely about time spent, and how much risk you take on as part of your learning. A more hard core player is going to advance a lot faster, be a better player, but there are limits to that level of growth and eventually even the most casual player can and will catch up to at least a competitive level. This only happens though if you are put in a position where you must continue to learn and get better.

The skill cap being at ground level for most of the players means they never close that gap and the game becomes stagnant, limited in tactics, and overall boring meta.

I have no issues with zergs, I think they are a great introductory level for anyone new to WvW style of play. Exceedingly important in what it does, but there is more to the game and people as part of their natural progression should outgrow the zerg. In GW2 this is not happening.

Warhammer Online died almost immediately after the patch that was intended to break up the zergs. By allowing small groups to easily take any objective the zerg was forced to leave individual groups at each to hope to defend long enough to flip the zone. So by having your zerg broken up into small man groups at each objective the enemy just rolled in with multiple groups to take one objective and cause the zone timer to reset once they take the objective back.

After that patch some of the larger guilds, mine included, left Warhammer. Breaking up the zergs is what killed Warhammer.

Yes that was it. It wasn’t that EA fired to many people after releasing a game that was not ready for release. It wasn’t that they promised Darkness Falls and gave the game LoTD, bumping the much needed class balance patch in the process. It wasn’t the exceptionally broken end game progression.

No it was because at some random point they broke up the zerg… wtf? Warhammer was much more tactical and interesting because of those changes, sorry that your one zerg for all occasions guild found it too complex.

These kinds of changes would go a long way to seeing a lot more GvG action out in world play.

A quote from Devon Carver. Is the AoE cap finally going to be trashed? I’d love to know how they are planning on giving a smaller, but more skilled group an even playing field against a larger, but worse group. I don’t think just changing the scoring system will fix the mindless zerg’s advantage over a more skilled, but outnumbered group.

[math] AoE Cap Cannot Be Removed

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

So stop asking for it.

And it’s not because of balance, it’s there to keep the server and/or your CPU from exploding in huge fights… which already happens as is (skill lag and 1 fps).

Without the cap, the processing would rise exponentially with an increase in players. More players casting AoEs x more getting hit by each AoE.

Example: 100 players each casting 1 non-pulsing AoE on 100 other players with no cap would be 100×100=10,000 different damage instances to be calculated. Doesn’t matter if it was done clientside or serverside, a real-time fight would be impossible except for a super computer.

Your theory does not take into account that people will have to move out of the AoE range and not stack up as much.

Not that I think the AoE cap should be removed, but your argument is pretty fail and really I wouldn’t use ‘math’ in the title for 100×100.

A lot of you seem to forget that this game is not even a year old. So they do make changes (even though the first set of them took a while).

But since the game came out we have seen:
The introduction of siege skills (dynamic play came with it)
Traps (love them or hate them, they are a good tool for those that know how)
Ascended gear is finally obtainable via WvW only
Daily’s have been updated so that you don’t have to PvE for your laurel.
Rewards for defending are better.
And WvW leveling (with titles), which like it or not is a pretty substantial step into adding “progression” in the game.

- how useful are siege skills if you do not enjoy using siege?
- no issue with traps, I love trolling people with them
- only took them 7 months to add an ascended gear vendor… we should be grateful
- dailies could be done in WvW only all along, its just a bit easier
- rewards for defending… you mean like getting to keep your objective?
- wvw leveling was made a joke the moment they made it about kill tags and again how useful is any of those abilities when you do not enjoy using siege? I have 90 points unspent, this was about a weak a step into a progression system as you can make without going backwards.

ANET has fixed Culling in a year, that’s it. WAR was pretty pathetic in their first year, releasing LoTD before the class balance patch, but ANET has done less, imo.

This video is old, put out near the start of march. It was discussed a lot then, what is the value of going around that circle again?

Thoughts on the recent "Future of WvW" blog post

To everything you state in your article I feel nothing but admiration and an overwhelming feeling of “Yes, yes, yes that’s the way I feel.”
Some parts of WvW are extremely fun (small duels, large open field battles, but also the sieging part you mention). Others are just lacking (like the way zergs function, the lesser rewards for people who do valuable things, the lack of guild content and the fails in the commander system).

The fact that you recognize these issues and are willing to do something about them, makes you and your team more than the WvW community could ever wish for.
I hope the changes will be as promising as you make them sound and that we will find WvW ever more interesting and challenging!

ps. forget about the babies, you don’t have time for that!

I am glad that the MMO community still contains naive, overly optimistic, and hopeful people. Not all of us can be bitter as yet another game kittens its potential down the drain with one stupid decision after another.

It’s fine how it is now. Use map for general blah, team for campaign specific things.

I still have yet to spend a single point in WvW ranks

Met too, not on any of my characters.

Calling Targets in Small Groups

in WvW

Sorry, I suppose my question was poorly worded. I know how targeting works in game :-P

What I meant was, as a group do you allow anyone to call a target? Only because it can get confusing if 2-3 people in an organized group are calling targets.

We typically have 1-3 people that call and mark targets depending on their role in the group, but we have one person that does most of the play calling. We play a lot together so it is pretty smooth.

No that means that there will be Commander upgrade throught wxp with:
50wxp points – 1% dmg to guards
100wxp points – 2% dmg to guards
etc

You ruined the surprise.

New Siege Ideas: Giant Rolling Ball of Death

in WvW

Posted by: Niim.9260

Niim.9260

I recommend a giant turret tower with 70+ laser guns, with map wide range, attached. This way everyone can sit just outside the spawn and just shoot lasers at other people shooting lasers. We wouldn’t even need to move other then to get to a gun.

Excited about the new wvw changes

Its a pile of kitten in my opinion. More siege, really? Outside of culling the only improvements to WvW has been around siege. Even the WXP is pretty much ‘advanced siege’ system, no meaningful rewards or tools for anyone that might like to actually play with their character.

I would love for my friends and guild to come back to the game. This kind of vague kitten does nothing at all because ANET’s tract record is that of a bunch of people that should be playing hello kitty, not a PvP based game. Does anyone there actually like challenging play? A skill cap that is something you work towards rather then accidentally trip over?

It’s interesting you mention this. We’ve encountered quite a few very squishy SoS and have had conversations wondering why they’re wearing zerker gear in WvW….

Someone needs to educate them a bit… If nothing else, Knights gear is a minor decrease in damage, and a good increase in survivability….

Gear should be reflective of your role within the group and your risk. This pervasive view that everyone go defensive because we all stand in a giant ball is a crutch, so you do not have to learn to position, move, dodge or rely on the support of your team.

I like tankier builds. I tell other people to build tankier. If you can run a berserker build and live in WvW, kudos man! I’m not as awesome as you are. I don’t like someone in my group dying first and rallying the enemy team. I especially dislike being that person.

Gear should be a reflection of how you play, not a blanket approach. If you think you need to be tankier, then be tankier, but not everyone needs to be tankier.

A fair way to reward winning

in WvW

Why not just RNG reward a server, because that is pretty much all the OP is suggesting. If you get a good roll on the RNG matchup system you gain points, if you do not, you lose points.

The issue overall is thakittens all about population and coverage and any reward system you use will eventually just be about rewarding coverage and population. Fix the underlying problem, then worry about rewards.
