I’m assuming that the Bank Tab Expansions won’t work in the Account Jump Start pack if you have already maxed out your bank tabs? Can anyone tell me if this is correct? If so then it would be kind of pointless in getting it for those of us that have maxed out tabs.

They won’t work if you’re already maxed out.

Big discounts?
Caithe’s Bloom and Kasmer’s Staff were always 600 gems weren’t they?
I know the dagger was 600 at least.
A whole whopping 0% off sale!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to see them bringing some stuff back and adding new stuff. But I hope stuff being full price isn’t going to be the norm here.

I don’t remember the previous price were, but if what you say is true, than what a big slap in the face to call it a “sale”.

They did the same thing last anniversary, so it’s nothing to be really surprised about by now. Generally speaking, there’s two patterns you can expect with gem store items:

  • If it’s on the store year-round, it’ll get a discount during sales (30%~50%). You should be saving gems on armor skins, outfits, services, and upgrades.
  • If it isn’t available on the store for most of the year, it will show up during sales at full price. If you missed a limited time release (white/black feather wings, grenth’s hood, etc.) then this might be the chance to pick them up.

If last year’s anniversary sale is any indicator, sale items will only be available/be on sale for one day before being rotated out for the next day’s sale, however there will be a “catchup sale” on the last weekend where everything that was re-released/put on sale will hit the gem store again, so you have all of two chances.

If Commander Shepard showed up in Tyria, he would just sit in the Black Citadel all day and randomly sponsor shops by telling people it’s his favorite place the Citadel.

And then we’ll have a holographic Scarlet explain to us that dragons were created to save us from destroying ourselves with magic by killing us before we can destroy ourselves with magic, then give us the option of committing suicide in a red, blue, or green pillar of light. Meaningful choices!

#5: Don’t even try to get one. It is a waste of time, money, effort, and hope. The sooner you accept failure, the sooner you can get over it and do something productive.

Yeah, that’s the sad thing about us gamers. In any other situation, if you were to tell someone they’re free to put effort into something but will make absolutely no progress towards a particular goal, they’d just walk away. We just grind on like shiny-obsessed Skritt.

Unfortunately people have taken to literally walking away (from their keyboards) by AFK leeching events.

Opinions about "Account Bump/ Jump Start"

Pandaman.4758

I’m sure they have value for other players, but for me both packs have horrible value:

Black Lion Keys – Never have and never will pay for RNG lockboxes, seeing these in the packs actually takes value away for me.

Transmutation Charges – Already swimming in charges from PvP track rewards, buying more would just be silly.

Account-Bound Unidentified Dyes – Already have every standard color, so Unid Dyes only have value as Gift of Color material to me… except these can’t be used to make a Gift.

Experience Boosters – All my characters are level 80, I have more than enough ToKs to make more 80s, I don’t WvW anymore, and while the PvP track progress boost is nice, I would have to suffer Unranked/Ranked to get the most use out of it. No thanks.

Bag Slot Expansion – I have four 20 slot bags and a Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic, I have absolutely no need for overpriced bag slots.

Bank Tab Expansion – About the only thing in the packs that I find value in, but that’s 1,200 gems worth of stuff I do want in a 2,000 gem pack filled mostly with stuff I don’t want.

Why was Transmutation changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pandaman.4758

It was changed because they figured out a way to make it easier whilst at the same time getting more money out of players (gems for charges) and cloaking it in an illusion of goodwill.

Did you forget how the old system worked? We had Transmutation Stones and Transmutation Crystals, the former was free from map completion but only worked on level 1-79 items, while the latter was only available in the gem store and the only option for transmuting level 80 skins.

We went from being required to buy Crystals to being able to use the free charges we get from map completion/PvP tracks/login rewards and you consider than an illusion of goodwill?

It used to be a fun simple process that would open in a separate window.
You chose two items and which skin and stats you wanted.
Now, it’s all gone and weird to understand.
How do i know which items skin and which stats I’ll get?
I transmuted two items and the dyes on that item changed to the new item colors
which really messed it up.
And we cant choose which rune we want to keep.
We just sort of transmute and hope for the best now?

It’s been nine hours, please tell us you’ve finally realized how simple and superior the new system is compared to the old one.

There are better sources than karma for the T1 and T2 cultural weapons though. You can buy them for relatively cheap for WvW tokens in a skin form (so it won’t even cost you a transmutation stone) and you can get T1 from blue and green drops, and T2 from rare drops in the race areas.

Oh, true, forgot about those, Samari would still need another 7.6 million karma if they intend to collect the remaining skins though.

Pandaman.4758

A little OT, but what to use Karma for anyway, I have 300.000 and dont know what to spend it on

Karma skins.

Off the top of my head there are the three Temple armor sets (42k karma for each piece, 18 pieces, so 756k karma total), Ebon Vanguard, Lionguard, and Pirate weapons (9.8k each, 57 weapons, 55.86k total), Tier 1 cultural weapons (9.8k each, 76 weapons, 744.8k total), Tier 2 cultural weapons (35k each, 76 weapons, 2.66m total), and Tier 3 cultural weapons (63k each, 95 weapons, 5.985m total).

That’s 10,201,660 karma. I’m not even counting all the other karma skins like Duelist Armor and the such, but those won’t add much to the total since they’re relatively cheap.

Lack of cool items in the game

Limited edition items are very good for an mmorpg […]

What do you base that assumption on? If you look at Living Story S1 that’s pretty much ANet was experimenting with, but that they’ve moved away from that model in S2 suggests it didn’t work out.

That isn’t to say that repeatable time-limited events, such as the seasonal events, don’t serve a role in getting people to play during holidays when they’re more likely to spend money, but I don’t believe one-off time-limited content has demonstrated itself to be a “very good” long term model.

Because we’re individuals with different tastes?

As do all the skins in the wardrobe.

and you don’t need to buy transmutation charges for the each part of armor for all of your characters on your account.

I have 133 transmutation charges, haven’t paid for a single one (map completion and PvP reward tracks).

Yes, you still can’t do mix of each part from the different outfits and a standard armor skins, but…

Why ask a question when you already have the answer?

Well, look at your title and post: you use “best value” in the title and you start the post talking about the financial benefits of the items. If you buy them to “get anything good,” they are a horrible buy. If you buy them for the excitement you get as you roll for that “anything,” then they are as good a deal as you want them to be.

As stated in the original post, they are in the list because the OP considers them to be “fun”, not because they are “useful.”

To be fair, if the OP wants to list things they find fun rather than give you the most bang for your buck, they shouldn’t have titled the post “Top 5 best values in Black Lion Gem Shop”.

I agree people AFKing or actively working against the event should not get any loot. Especially since RNG can wind up giving little (or bad) loot to people who give it their all. I am not sure how you could measure that though. Not damage as that would bias towards people who were using damage-causing skills that lower level players do not have.

Does anyone have any ideas how this could be done?

An adaptation of the WvW/PvP anti-AFK system that boots players to character selection if there is no input for more than one minute, except instead of booting it just silently resets credit for the event and scales the event down accordingly.

Also the event system needs to be adjusted to scale to people actually participating instead of just counting the number of people nearby. It’s always massively aggravating to be doing an event with a waypoint in the middle of it and suddenly having completion requirements jump up because 20 people zoned in and decided to AFK right there (karka egg collection in Southsun Cove or defending the camp against Skritt thieves in Drytop comes to mind).

Oh, and I don’t think GW2 is P2W except for one thing, and that’s the Watchwork Mining Pick.

WoW is more P2W than GW2 is, because you technically can’t win if you can’t play after failing to pay for your subscription.

Ok, I get what you mean, but not being able to play means neither winning nor losing. When you pay a monthly subscription for WoW, either through your bank account or through those gamecards or through those WoW Tokens, you are on the same level as others who do that and you don’t have advantages. P2W does not define not being able to play the game.

I could just sit here and explain the joke to you, but not worth the effort. Instead have a disapproving Tommy Lee Jones.

And from the same patch notes:

Karma boosts are still supposed to work, that they don’t is unintended.

I love the wardrobe system, but it has a MAJOR flaw: 2Every single time I want to change the looks of something, it will cost me a transmutation shard. This is just ridiculous. I’m fine with spending a transmutation shard for changing something’s apperance, but why do I have to spend one every time after that?

Because customizing armor appearance is a large selling point of GW2 and ANet would be remiss to not monetize it in some fashion?

It’s also still leagues better than the old system which forced you to buy gem store sets more than once if you wanted to use a particular skin on two different characters and you could only get Transmutation Crystals for level 80 items from the gem store.

Add pvp to all maps...

in PvP

Posted by: Pandaman.4758

Pandaman.4758

Well, except in the case of GW2, where it is as simple as setting some variables. WvW and PvE is the same thing. The enviroment is controlled by server rules which can be changed by events, even for specific zones. Setting every player to hostile is easily done. GW2 already supports it.

The Shatterer event in Plains of Ashford which enabled open world PvP between corrupted and normal players followed by Destinys Edge instakilling everyone, remember?

You talk about how the server can change the rules and it’s all “simple” variables, but have you even thought about what those variable changes would be? The two examples you just gave are completely different from a PvP flag system.

In WvW and the Shatterer event, it’s a matter of your faction being set to opposing sides. It’s a binary thing: either you’re a friend or you’re a foe, that’s something that can be handled by one entry on the character data.

Now think about what a PvP flag entails: you’re hostile to everyone who has the PvP flag on, but you’re not hostile to anyone who has the PvP flag off. You would have to be in a new faction that’s friendly toward the regular player faction (and share all the same associations as the player faction in order for NPCs to react appropriately to you), but that faction can’t be the same faction as other PvP-flagged players otherwise they’d be automatically marked friendly. The only way to work around this would be to either assign every single player a unique faction (which would cause ridiculous overhead) or to create a new faction that’s hostile to itself (which might not be possible depending on how they set up the system or cause weird problems like your own AoEs killing you).

If something really was simple and the ANet didn’t want to do it, then they’d straight up say it’s not in their vision of the game to implement something like that. They’re not going to come up with false excuses just to get out of homework like some prepubescent teen.

Report it as a bug, provide as much detail as you can remember about what you were playing and how you were receiving loot, it would be really bad if someone were to figure out how to reliably exploit this bug to transfer unlimited precursors from beta characters.

Pandaman.4758

I’m in one of the guilds that accused of doing this, but I want to be completely fair in my defense of them: I remember this was true for a while over a year ago, but it’s not anymore. People complained and they listened, so now they decide on which map they will stay on 45 minutes before natural spawn, and if there are enough members who got in late and can’t spam in a leader will volunteer to jump over to their map to organize there as well (if there isn’t already a commander tag up on the second map).

It’s a shame that there are guilds that still do this, but do refrain from throwing out accusations based on outdated information, that just creates problems rather than solves them. Plus you get an unnecessary infraction for it.

HoT hard drive space for non-HoT purchase?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pandaman.4758

Pandaman.4758

If it truly is the standard for all MMOs that the expansion content is a forced download even for those who don’t own the expansion that is ridiculous. It makes me wonder what size the WoW install requires on a hd these days.

Out of idle curiosity, where are you getting the information that non-HoT accounts will get all ten gigs of the expansion? Are you certain that non-HoT accounts are not going to download only the required files for the new textures, models, and maps that they’ll be able to access even without HoT?

I still believe there is an ethical question here. Since multiple MMORPG developers are following the pattern it’s not exclusively directed at ANet, but in general how ethical is it to require players to devote 5-10GB+ of hard drive space to patches for an expansion they don’t even have legal right to use and to content they never signed a license agreement for.

Whoa, stop. You did agree to it.

2. LIMITED LICENSE — SERVICE, CONTENT AND SOFTWARE LICENSED NOT SOLD

(a) The Game requires Service, Content and Software from NCSOFT. You acknowledge that You must obtain Software from NCSOFT to use the Game and that such software may have a serial code number / access key that can only be used once. You also acknowledge that You must obtain Service from NCSOFT to use the Game and You acknowledge that You are responsible for supplying any necessary communications connections (such as Internet access) and hardware to use the Game, as well as any costs or expenses related to the foregoing. You further acknowledge that NCSOFT may, in its sole and absolute discretion, allow You full or partial access to Content, including one or more Message Boards, Teams or Items, and may condition such full or partial access upon Your compliance with the provisions in Section 4 below as well as other provisions related to the foregoing.

Simply put, an MMO is a service, when the cost of the service goes up (in this case the required hard drive space) you’ve already agreed that you will shoulder that cost. This was true whenever they updated the gem store with skins that you didn’t buy (but still had the files downloaded to your drive), it remains true for the expansion – albeit at a larger scale.

When purchased at retail boxed each expansion has it’s own license agreement. Though digital download it’s blurry. Is the original GW2 license agreement a living document that a player signs every time they sign into the game?

Whenever there are changes to the user agreement you will receive a popup informing you of such when you try to log into the game and it will prevent you from logging into the game until you accept it. This has been standard practice in every MMO for years and it’s even spelled out in the agreement:

3. DURATION OF AGREEMENT, ACCOUNT TERMINATION, REFUND REQUESTS

(a) Duration — Unless modified or amended by NCSOFT, this agreement and its provisions shall remain in effect. Termination of any license granted by NCSOFT under this agreement does not affect any other provisions of this agreement.

In other words, the moment they change something in the agreement it ends and you to accept the new agreement for them to continue providing you the service.

Put gaming out your mind for a moment and taking the question up to a higher level. Is it ethical for any software product vendor to take up large amounts of your hard drive space with related add on products they offer that you never purchased and that you do not have the legal right to use without paying them for a license?

Sure, but you should ask again once you know if this is actually the case.

I think he may be referring to the distance at which hero points show up? I know that hearts, vistas, PoIs, and waypoints show up on the map at pretty generous distances, but the new hero challenges seem to require you to be much closer than the old skill challenges.

For example I was mapping Timberline just the other day and I knew there was a hero challenge just west of Concordia, but noticed it didn’t show up on the map despite previous experience (world completion on 8 characters) telling me I should have been able to see it as soon as I was inside Concordia. I was only able to find it because I knew it was there already, for a new player (or a player with poor memory) it would be annoyingly hard to find.

You’re ignoring the fact that greatswords (and every other weapon, for that matter) in GW2 range anywhere from two to five times the size of their real life counterparts. Just to throw in my two cents, but it would also be wonderful if hair/makeover kits actually filled the entire screen or allowed us to resize the window so we can get a better look at our changes.

I'd like dye on our backpacks!

Why would they let you dye backpacks when they can sell you recolored versions of the same thing over and over?

why would you think so badly of others?

No idea what technical limitation (if any) there is that prevents players from applying dyes to glows (can’t recolor flames on Hellfire, Flame Legion, or any of the fire-themed gem store skins, nor the glow of Radiant skins), but it sure didn’t stop ANet from charging us 500 gems for identical models with palette swaps.

Idea for account bound harvesting tools

It was nice of ANet to change the infinite tools from soul bound to account bound, but I don’t think they’re going to remove all incentives to encourage people to buy more than one set of infinite tools.

Stop asking to remind me for SMS

As GummiBear already pointed out, you can just install an authenticator on your PC instead, the SMS option is only for people who don’t have smartphones and don’t want to install the PC authenticator.

There’s nothing insecure about the authenticator, it doesn’t communicate with any servers (the server and your authenticator program are just crunching the same mathematical model that produce identical results, that’s how it stays in synch without needing constant communication) nor does it require any private information; that aside, there’s also an option in the accounts page to memorize the hardware ID of your computer and mark it as safe, which should stop the security update mail you keep getting.

Asc aquatic-breather, what about Rime-Rimmed?

I wish it was a separate skin with the particle effects rather than the effects tied to it being that particular aquabreather. I don’t think any other skin in the game works that way, does it?

The Poly-luminescent Undulating Refractors and Preserved Queen Bee appear to use similar tech in that special effects are tied to an item (in this case jewels) instead of skins.

Why didn’t you make Rime-Rimmed effects tied to a jewel as well, ANet?

Fractals broken

Pandaman.4758

I’ve run into this problem a few times, the thing that happens is when I exit the fractal (or arrive late to LA when people have already gone in) is the popup window for joining your party is the light blue one (the one that usually pops up when you start a fractal and select what scale you want, but defaults to your max reward level) instead of the dark blue one that’s supposed to bring you straight to your party.

If I just hit “enter fractal” with the light blue popup, it will almost always send me to a new instance. The only time it doesn’t send me to a new instance is if the number in the fractal scale input is equal to or below scale that the rest of the party is in – so I have to punch in the correct scale, hit enter, then hit “enter fractal” (just entering the number and clicking on the button doesn’t work).

Greatest fear selection bug

I have been doing the personal story with two friends and we all picked the fear of letting an innocent die, but for some reason only one got Tower Down while the two of us got Shell Shock.

  • The friend who got Tower Down is a new player, account was created about six months ago , character was created about two weeks ago and joined the Vigil. He was in the lead and picking all the choices. He is playing a sylvari necromancer.
  • The friend who got Shell Shock is an old player, account and character were created almost three years ago, joined the Vigil a year and a half ago (before going on hiatus), but only started on missions for the Vigil last week (was accepting the above friend’s choices). He is playing a sylvari ranger.
  • I got Shell Shock, account was created a year and a half ago, character was created last week, but I joined the Whispers, so I had to solo my personal story up to the greatest fear selection to catch up with them. I’m also playing a sylvari ranger.

Only thing I can see (from this admittedly insignificant sample size) is that the bug is related to out class.
