Why Magic Find is a Poor Mechanism

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pennry.9215

First, my “main” has full Exotics times two and I don’t run with Magic Find to get it. Making money in this game (and just about any other MMO) is easy enough.

All in all, even if someone full on Magic Find is getting more “better” loot, all they’re gaining is a tad more money than the next guy. So what? Honestly, why do you care so much that there are people out there making more than you… in a game even? What’s going to happen to that player once they’ve used all this wealth to get all they can in the game? They’re going to “burn out” and leave. Is that bad for the game? Debatable, but it’s not the game’s fault. It’s the players’ fault for ignoring that ArenaNet has stated over and over that this game isn’t about the grind to get the best of the best and that there is no rush to “end game”. It’s those players that think they still must have the most/“best” first that should have just realized that this game isn’t that. And who are we to tell them they’re doing it wrong? Guild Wars 2 is about playing what you like whenever you like. If people like making mass amounts of gold, let them. There is no real advantage to having everything first, but to each their own.

Again, I’ve made more than enough (currently about 1/4 way to a Legendary at that) without Magic Find. And by how cheap one can get to over 200% Magic Find, I don’t think it’s as big a “problem” as you are making it out to be.

Hi people, I would like to give away Dawn.

In my opinion, Map Completion is too rewarding, too boring

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pennry.9215

Pennry.9215

Um, events give more reward than map completion. Events gives cash, Karma, experience, and loot (more cash). Map completion to the extreme given by the OP gives experience and cash.

Think about map completion for a minute. You run for PoI to PoI, you just get the experience. You look at Vistas, again just experience. Waypoints, more experience. Hearts are the only thing that gives anything more than just experience. You get a bit of cash on completion and maybe some loot if it required killing mobs.

Now think about how events work. First, they often enough overlap and help complete the Hearts much quicker. The experience gained at the end is close to the same as the Hearts. The potential loot is greater as more events require mass killing than Hearts do. The kicker being the Karma.

Doing both as you go (as previously pointed out) is the best method, but don’t say that map completion’s reward is too much. The only real major bonus reward, the Gifts, is at 100%.

Now I do see the point of people clearing an area and not coming back. Orr is the only real place where you’ll see repeat people day after day. But really, how much fun is it to come to some lower level area and just dominate everything? “End game grind” here is SPvP, WvW, or Legendaries. Only SPvP doesn’t require any event “farming”. Yes, you can get by in WvW with just drops gained there, but to really contribute with blueprints, etc you need some extra cash.

I see a lot of “alts”. A guild mate even told me “I don’t have a main or alts, I’m just playing the game”. The game is the whole world, the best way to experience it is to just create another character. I at least plan to keep hitting 30+ to join the orders and see the different Personal Stories.

I have an 80 Warrior in full Exotics (Knight’s armor, Emerald accessories, Berserker’s equivalent weapons) that I’d like to run more dungeons on. Namely I’d like to run AC enough to finish off the 500 Tears for the Gift. I’d also like to run HotW for the style, but am open to running anything just as long as AC and HotW aren’t ignored. I spend a lot of time logged in, but my time for dedicated attention is random. So I’d need a Guild that is alright with me not representing until I can give that dedicated attention to complete a run (or few).

I know this probably reads pretty selfish of me, but I just can’t stand the LFG map spam and lack of decent custom party LFG tool (mainly because I like to move around or tinker on an alt while waiting). I’d much rather pull from a solid group consistently, but can’t dedicate to a full on static group due to the random 100% attention times.

Should the 'Downed' state be removed?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Pennry.9215

Pennry.9215

The downed state is a last ditch effort for your character to stay alive. It has it’s own penalty of giving you less and less HP and does actually stack to a point where you’ll just die and not have the chance to be downed. You are also generally stuck to one spot and anyone coming to your aid is also locked in action.

It is not a “just run in and get downed, someone will always come help me”. I have seen people just run in to things expecting to be saved, but generally after a couple times, people just ignore them as it’s not worth risking themselves.

Personally, I like it. For me it’s an “oh kitten, help!” moment and I think it keeps the action going. I really enjoy that anyone can res at any time without needing to spec or slot for it. I like that if more people do it, it goes faster.

Hughs.6549, you lost me when you said that grave rushing allows people to not learn the mechanics then immediately said that the dungeons weren’t complex enough. Ignoring what I know about the dungeons, I think to myself “What does Hughs want people to learn if there’s nothing there?”

Now I will agree with you that this death rushing is just bad. Those are with the people that just do it from the start: rush in, die, rush back, repeat. No attempt to actually try. Then there are the times that I’ve done it. That’s when you’ve failed so many times and have been there for ever so long, you just want it done. Since reward is all at the end, no one wants to just say “we can’t do this” and leave after investing so much time.

The real problem lies in that the game never teaches you anything about group play and how to deal with tactics. I only learned about combos because I got curious about the information on the tooltip and looked it up out outside of the game. World “Group Events” are all just rush fests with people barely seeing past “must do max damage to that boss!” Way too many times have I seen the Grenth Priest fight explained that you actually have to have people taking out shades to keep the Priest form one-shotting the NPC.

Side note: I find it even funnier that people automatically try to death rush in dungeons because they can, yet come out to take Balthazar and everyone is laying around dead waiting for res.

DR on Legit Run Times

I haven’t had the instance of running in to DR on dungeon runs, as I barely do one a week. But, they could easily add a check list of sorts that shows each boss being killed to give credit and your token reward is based on what you killed. They could make the “random” bosses (ie troll in AC) give extra credit. The other system I’d suggest is just to add in good old fashioned cooldowns/lockouts. Based on reading here and my limited experience, a good 30 minutes is fair enough. I think the best reported times I’ve seen are some 15 minutes. So that group would have to wait a whole 15 more minutes (woe is them).

Mr eX.3420, I laughed good when you said respec. It’s not respecing to know the instance and execute it as it should be. You should keep moving even if you could always hit the burrows while standing still. It’s about keeping the mobs that keep poring out busy chasing you while you kill the the burrow and them via AoE. Learn your weapons and their skills and bring what’s needed. Even if this “bug” didn’t exist, I’d still tell you to circle the burrow using skills that hit more than one target (love the greatsword for this) while swapping to your bow for it’s AoEs (nom might stacking). Once that one room is done, you can go back to whatever weapons you prefer for other trash. Bringing more than one weapon isn’t respecing, it’s being prepared.

Order of Play Strategy--What Area to Pick Next?

I found the easiest way to level (without crafting) was to finish the cities, then the 1-15 areas, then the next tier and so on. This will put you well ahead of the targeted level for each area (after the first couple), and even down-leveled, you’ll have an easier time with it.

Personally: I did my race’s city then starting 1-15 area. Then I’d do another race’s city and starting area. Then I’d go back my race’s 16-25 area. Then a third race’s city and starting area. By the time I was through all the races’ starting areas, they were blending together anyway. While doing this, I would get to my Personal Story quest’s level and go back and do it. I did end up getting several levels ahead of the Story due to finishing an area before going back to it, but it evened out later on anyway.

Your Personal Story will not take you to all the areas. It will keep you close to home until you’ve joined one of the three groups (post level 30 story quest). At that point it will most likely have you running to/through other regions, so you might as well explore/complete them.

The Personal Story has an actual “go do this” step about every two levels. There’s a lot of “go talk” steps where not much action happens and the quest level doesn’t increase. If your character is level 50+ and your Story is at level 5, you’ve got a lot to catch up. :P

It is understandable that there will be less useful people in WvW. However, there is no point encouraging that kind of behavior.

For someone like yourself who does not like WvW, you seem to be awfully concerned with the welfare of your realm. While players who enter in order to explore only do so once, perhaps it would also encourage them to actually play WvW – which would gain your realm permanent, useful, defenders.

I like that they put map completion to include WvW as well as put blueprints as part of the end Personal Story reward. It encourages people to go out and try it. Even if it’s just to run screaming from PoI to PoI, there’s that always that chance that it will snowball in to something greater and much more fun.

Why is there not a PvP Server?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pennry.9215

Must admit I would love to see a proper open world pvp server. With the down scaling of zones would make for a great pvp environment. Though must admit I personally prefer some sort of faction divide rather than the total free for all type pvp. Unfortunately I don’t think gw2 is that game, shame as I’m desperately trying to find a replacement for Faxion online, darkfall unholy wars releases next month though so hopefully that will give me my open world pvp fix that I’m missing.

Down-scaling doesn’t work all that well. First, it puts you at least one level above the target level for the given area. Second, you’re still going to be “over powered” compared to the fresh lower level. The player in level appropriate greens (Rares start at what, 35?) is still undergeared compared to the downgraded Exotics. If it’s not clear, imagine running around Orr solo in greens versus in Exotics.

And to answer the OP’s question: There is no PvP server because the game and lore has no inter-racial conflict among the playable races. Add in the fact that “servers” are all just virtual nameplates and anyone can be on any “server” at any time. It would just make no sense.

“Does anyone know the highest upgrade that can be applied to back armor?”

Depends on the level of your back armor. The starter one you get early on in the Personal Story barely takes anything (mine was never slotted). You get a level 80 green (“Masterwork”) near the end of the Personal Story; this will then accept any level upgrade. There are also back pieces available from the guild armor vendor. These come in three levels (40, 60, 80, if I recall correctly) and will only accept an upgrade of it’s level or below.

SPvP – Same maps over and over, same game type for all the maps = Boring after a very short time. It’s on the devs to add a lot of content there, more maps, more game types, something.

WvW – 3x of the same map, “zerg” warfare, for tokens for gear/style rewards = lots of fun depending on the time of the day and how many people (on all sides) opt to be on, but lately it’s fun for the first few days then back to one server dominating and not many non-jumpers on. That’s on us players. I’d like to see unique Boarderlands per server or at least unique for each colored side or maybe be done with the Boarderlands maps all together.

World Completion – Fairly easy during leveling, actually the best way to level in my opinion. = Not much more to add there, could do it all again on another character…

Dynamic Events – I’ve done most, if not all of them, they get repetitive. BUT that’s my fault for logging for so kitten long. = Best way to ease the “grind” for gold/materials. Devs could change it up so that they’re actually “dynamic” and change a bit. (lots of threads already on this point)

Dungeons – Story path plus three others of varying difficulty, with a token system for gear/style rewards. = Decent start. What actually happens in these dungeons needs work (again plenty of threads on this). Change them up a bit so the token rush is more fun or even (dare I type it) longer.

Legendaries – Lots of time needed here, need the Karma, the gold, and just a bit from everything else. = The only real “work at for a long time” goal. I think the devs did a good job of integrating the whole game (minus SPvP) for this goal. I do wish there was more to Legendaries than just getting a weapon.

You’d grind SPvP to collect the styles. You’d grind Open World for all gold for minis and getting every Legendary. You’d grind WvW for dominance and all it’s styles. You’d grind dungeons for all their styles. BUT that’s only if you really have to have them all asap. All these carrots are firmly placed in the ground, all you have to do is crawl through the barbed-wire field of landmines to get it. After all the styles and collections are done, for variety you have WvW and SPvP and for consistency you have the Open World’s “Dynamic” Events.

There is no real “carrot on a stick” here. They’ve set it up like Aion 1.5 was: Get to level cap then spend all your time in the Abyss. Here they’ve taken the time out of getting the gear (not completely RNG drop based) and we have no special PvP gear needed to get for the advantage. So we get to 80, get full exotic sets and go out to WvW all day long. This was made even more obvious when they give you a WvW blueprint choice for finishing the “personal story”.

EDIT: Point being, they’ve centered the game on doing stuff because you like doing it not on doing stuff just to be “better”. I like WvW and running around the Open World for my Legendary. I’d like SPvP a lot more if there were more variety to choose from.

Official Response: Drop Rate of Legendary Precursors

Pennry.9215

I look at the requirements of getting a Legendary weapon here in Guild Wars 2 and I think “that covers most of the game”.

The big things that got left out:
The “personal story” – Why isn’t my weapon “me” too?
SPvP – The only real alternative to WvW (which got included!) for “end game”, yet there is no real gain here – let alone some love in the “Legendary” process.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a recipe created for something like: SPvP Token + Story Token + Forge mat + something else. OR setting it so that the coming “Pact” weapon and/or SPvP rewarded weapons (ie not the free ones from the starter vendor) have a higher chance.

All in all, light RNG is already in the Clovers, we don’t need more. I don’t mind it all that much. We don’t need to know the exact chance to get these “precursors”, just that chance adjusted more, with more sub steps/benefits (like the Clover process).

Wife bugged me enough to finish this fight. I haven’t opened my “Loot Bags” to see what greens I get. I do have a few questions though:

1 – Why give us blueprints? I’m not all that upset about getting greens, they’re on-par with the rest of the loot the story has given. (I’m saying I expected as much, not that I’m happy with it.) The optional reward of the blueprints is a huge “you beat the story, all that’s left is WvW!” aka no prep for any other kind of “end game”.

2 – Will/do we have access to this vendor after completing (and leaving) the victory instance? Up to this point the only way in the room where Hargrove now stands has been via story instances.

3 – I noticed that the weapons are “Soulbound on Use” and have different vendor values. Why is this?

Overall rating of the final battle: 10/10 until the end then it tanks to a 3/10. I loved how it ramps up as you go through each “stage”, but the final boss battle is just “shoot cannons at boss”. The dragon champions before were much more fun with having to stop to hit real adds and wait for them to come around again (they could do with some more HP or something, it was about one pass before they died). After the cannon sequence with Zhaitan I fully expected there to be a “now go down there and finish it off!” but no, we’re done.

The general consensus seems to be that it only effect quality and not quantity. The Mexican Cookie.3690 outlines what I find most people are saying. So maximum Magic Find of some 165% and you’ve upped the odds quite nicely.

BUT, most the time I run through Orr and get drops for every 1 out of 4 kills. I’d like to see a better compromise on quality and quantity. I’ve got a set at only 125% Magic Find. I have yet to see any noticeable increase in money made. Then again, these games just hate me.

First off you open typing about Critical Chance, then start typing about Rubies that give Critical Damage percentages and Precision for Critical Chance. Which is it?

Next, If I remove my Berserker’s boots I lose 6 Critical Damage and 2 Critical Chance. Those boots have a total of 6% Critical Damage and 38 Precision. The Wiki says that at level 80, the required precision to increase the chance of a critical hit by 1% is about 21. So the reduction is accurate enough. Looking at accessories, I have an emerald earring (65 precision). Take that off and I lose 3 Critical Chance; again, close enough.

EDIT: And as a reference, I sit at 57% Critical Chance and +57 Critical Damage wearing that armor set.

There are three ways to do this kind of fight:
1 – Burn the “main boss”, ignore the rest
2 – Burn the adds, then the “main boss”
3 – Bring enough people to do both 1 and 2.

Here at JQ, people scream for method 1. To them it’s the only way. Nevermind watching people getting bounced from one add to the next, just to be finished off in little to no time. Some even suggest that the adds simply be kitted. That’s a way of doing method 3, but no one bothers to lead and set a group to such a task. Which brings us to why all three methods are seeming to fail: Very few people care to lead. (I’d gladly do it, just send me that 100g.)

In my opinion: method 1 is just dumb ie Zapp Brannigan; method 2 is a little smarter, as people follow the “kill weaker first” & “kill more for more loot” mindsets; and method 3 is the ideal way, but take way too much coordination and timed numbers than one can really expect from an open-world MMO event. And I will agree about the res’ing of the dead versus the downed, downed is some 10x faster to res and running back when dead is just quicker (especially if there is a good constant stream of people keeping the path).

Thread is busted the moment I log in so I can’t quote.

Just because you haven’t received a blue from salvaging doesn’t mean that the system doesn’t think you can. When you get a drop, it rolls for quality, quantity, and type. It’s the same for salvaging. What I’m pointing out is that maybe the “rarer” quality (ie blue or better) loot table is empty for salvaging. So you salvage, it hits “rare” but has nothing to give you, so it gives you the next stage down (“common”). It’s not the kits that are broken. It’s the system of salvaging. You start off by stating that Mystic Kits are broken, then show evidence that all kits are broken.

And I’m not saying you’re wrong. In fact, several times I’ve said you were right.

Just thought of something while doing my (now) daily orichalcum ore gathering: Maybe Silk/Gossamer is the worst example. With all the recent “nerfs” to T6 items and gear, it could be that Gossamer is setup differently than the other tiers and a trial with a T4 item would be better.

First 50/50 is completely different than 1/4, etc. If you left middle school and actually got in to advanced math you’d know this. Next, sample size is relevant here. A million shots is much more accurate than a mere 250. The game is built around every player ever.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. You are right, but your approach is wrong. You’re saying the kits are broken because (all the trials). You should be saying the crafting material tiers are broken because (all the same trials). I honestly think the game is set that each item falls in to the color rarity tiers and not the sub tiers that crafting mats have per level bracket. The game appears to think Silk is rarity 1A, Gossamer is rarity 1B, and anything blue is rarity 2: roll die get 1 or 2 with a 25% chance of 2, get one, roll second die for what type of 1 (A or. When it should be different for cloth scraps. It should be only rolling that second die, with a 25% chance of B. (Seeing the sub rarity scale is obvious when looking at the drop rates of Fine Materials: ie you get more Bones than you get Bloods, but they’re all in the same colored tier.)

And before you get all pissy about salvaging and drops being different, I’m saying they are not different but should be.

Again you all ignore that “chance on use” isn’t “chance over all”. Take a hundred-sided die, 75 sides have Silk on them and the other 25 have Gossamer on them. That die has a 25% chance to land on Gossamer per roll, not overall.

You could take a millions scraps and break them all down and still not be satisfied with your results. The system doesn’t go “they’ve done 95 breakdowns and only have received 20 Gossamer, better give them Gossamer for the next 5 breaks to make up the percentage”. It goes “breakdown… roll die, if 1-75 then Silk, else Gossamer”.

Welcome to odds and the true nature of RNG. Go to a casino, they may tell you it’s a 1:100000 (random numbers) chance to win the slot jackpot. That doesn’t mean you can take 100000 people and be guaranteed a winner.

I wouldn’t mind something like Aion’s “Dark Poeta” circa version 1.5, where what you killed and how fast you killed it changed your possible rewards. Here they could give mobs a score, you kill them for points and at the end your points add up to extra rewards (be it marks or whatever). That would open up the plan of attack to more discussion and people could chose a faster (skip stuff) run for less per run or a slower (kill everything) run for more per run. It could semi-even out, more skip runs in the same time as fewer kill runs equal the same reward:time.

Robert Hrouda, why do instances even have owners? This is a serious question. All the other games I play have it set up that the group is in the instance and as long as the group is a group (two or more people), people can come and go as they please as long as at least one person stays in the instance. A “leader” is only selected to mark and possibly guide, but GW2 has it set so anyone can mark a target. “Owning” the personal story instances is the only time it makes any sense to me.

Honestly, you only really need a weapon and that’s only because there is no attack without one.

No money @ level 80 issue...

Serious Question: Once you have all this Gold and get all the gear, etc you want, what do you plan on doing in the game?

Snip long rant about making money in game.

Stop porting/training around everywhere. Take a few minutes to kill stuff. Stick around and do events and/or complete Hearts. Money is everywhere.

Speed runs are out of control

A day. They’ve stated that you only get the full reward once a day. That’s the full 60 tokens for your first run of that path. (Bug reports aside.)

What I really don’t get is all the complaining about this. Most games have either full lockouts or loot lockouts after just one run.

Answer: Yes four 80s can work. They changed it so the lower levels don’t work.

I think it’s 75-80 works, but not sure. I only use 80 and salvage the rest for Ecto.

If Auxilium.2487 is posting the truth, it’s a bit infuriating to see same day service like that when most have had tickets open for weeks.

Any other updates? I’m getting tired of updating my ticket asking for updates just so it doesn’t get closed yet again.

The lack of the "trinity" is just killing my PvE enjoyment

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

First, ArenaNet never said there would be no “Trinity”. They said that everyone could play all roles. Big difference. They’ve also said that you need “group synergy” to complete the explore modes. Got that? They’ve set it up so that I, a Warrior, can opt to be the “tank” or the “DPS” or whatever I want, whenever I want!

Yes, the lack of “target of target” took some getting used to, but it’s not “game breaking”. Learn to adapt.

Yes, the apparent random agro not being random at times is a huge pain. Honestly, I think that goes back to the synergy bit. I’ve seen plenty of videos where the mob/boss focuses on someone for the entire fight. I’ve also see the mobs go nuts and be so ever so undecided. Most groups I see proudly showing their stuff have one person playing “tank” on purpose. Why? Because that person likes doing it. Their group has built that wondrous “synergy”.

It’s time you adapted to the game and stop trying to make the game adapt to you. Don’t throw out the “PuG” argument, PuGs aren’t supposed to complete explore mode with ease.

For whatever reason they made it so you can’t transmute armor you have equipped.

Did your ticket include every zone that matters’ map or just the world map like here? ‘Cause this just shows that you’re missing those few point. As far as the difference between character selection and in-game map: 99.8% looks quite a bit like 100% depending on which code you ask. All achievement progress for the “countries” is done on reveal, not Heart/PoI/Vista/Rally progress.

Auto-Attack Is Overriding Player Input

Thanks for the chuckle. Turn off auto attack and be done with it.

Seriously, it’s probably less a bug then a latency/sequence issue. If the auto attack command is already being sent, you can’t expect the next command to come first. In reality, despite all the effort to hide it, games are all turn-based.

Do you have this rune on any other set? Perhaps the PvP set? It’s known to “bug” and show 7/6 and is counting that other set.

Also, having worked for ATT support at one time, I can tell you guys that copy and paste answers generally just mean that pre-scripted replies are required by management.

hope they told you to read more than the first line and then C&P at ATT

Also having been an ATT support rep, I can tell you that only bad/unfriendly techs C&P no matter how scripted management wants you to be. :P

Back on topic: Do I have to “update” my ticket every day to keep it open? I’m getting tired of being told it’s resolved (closed) and to rate my experience.

Dungeon Gear System is Anti-Social

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Pennry.9215

Pennry.9215

Dungeon gear really should only be about appearance. They all have semi-unique skins, keep it that way. Make all dungeon gear available with all stat combinations available from the dungeon sets. That or make a degrading exchange system where say trading AC tokens for Arah tokens is like 10:1 (an example, just make it scale down more for the higher spread). Or, better yet, make a “karma set” for people to pool all their tokens in and get a universal token for. This way one could exchange all their tokens (from all the dungeons) in to one currency for a new unique set.
