By this logic, anytime a store has a promotion or sale, it means they’re desperate for money. Poor Walmart, just barely scraping by as it is.

Q: Does a year of LS fulfill an expansion?

in Living World

Posted by: Phy.2913

Phy.2913

Free isn’t an excuse, but you can’t ignore it either.

True.

So, let’s take a look at the free updates that were put out by another game. My favorite MMO of all time (until NCSoft killed it), City of Heroes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Heroes#Issues_.28free_updates.29

Did these updates come every two weeks? No. But they were lasting changes, they improved and expanded the game world, and they pretty much blow the GW2 LS out of the water in the regard.

Looking at the first year of that game (april 2004-may 2005) there were 4 updates. I never played CoH, so I can’t comment on which game was better after it’s first year.

in Living World

Phy.2913

“Yes, putting all updates together from start of Living Story until now is very much enough to fulfill an expansion.”

Most expansions I’ve ever bought or played had way more features and content then what we’ve gotten in the LS. My view might be skewed because most of the content is gone and you can currently not see it.

Good point. How much did you pay for the living story?

Personally, I’ve paid about as much as I’ve had to pay for tens of thousands of free books to read on my eBook, hundreds of hours of videos on YouTube, and countless free flash games.

When it comes to free entertainment, people still have options. Free doesn’t excuse it being bad. If it’s not better than the other free entertainments, why will people bother with it?

Free isn’t an excuse, but you can’t ignore it either.

Explorer-focused Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Phy.2913

All I can imagine is that they are preparing a massive expansion. Else they’ll lose too many of their players in 2014 because of the lack of areas to discover.

Because having new areas to explore every two weeks is considered lack of new areas? Every time a zone is changed that is new stuff to explore. Just because there is not a new zone does not mean that there is a lack of new areas to discover.

Every two weeks I get to discover new areas, seems a lot better than waiting every 6 months for new discoveries.

But the current additions rarely take more than 30 minutes to find if even that. I finished up the Tower’s new add ons in less than 5 minutes.

Those who focus primarily on exploration need a new zone to fully explore. And your desires and the desires of the OP are not mutually exclusive. They can add in a few new areas during the Living Story without having to give up making a new zone all together.

And what will you do after you finish it in an hour?

Gem skin should be unlimited use - quick fix

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Phy.2913

Phy.2913

There is a way to implement something that could be good for everyone.

Introduce a new crystal in the Store, let’s call it ‘transmutation essence’ that is above the other two transmutation items and slightly more expensive.

This crystal ‘copies’ the skin of an item and makes it reusable in a PVE locker.

Win win situation:
- You don’t want to reuse an item? normal crystals are good enough for you.
- Want to make a skin everlasting? use the more expensive crystal

I for sure would use a lot of those crystals for in-game skins that I want to keep and I am sure that with the bunch of collectors running this game, the new crystals would sell quite well.

Sure, Anet would not sell crystals each time you wanted a reskin, but they would surely sell more crystals in the long run with those new improved crystals because I am sure a lot of people would use them on lots of skins in the game that are currently not worth thinking about.

My 2 cents.

They don’t need another teir of transmutation gems, just make the skins “items” that require the current gem to transmute. We get permanent skins, and they get a boost in consumable sales and/or gold sink

It doesn’t disprove it either. Do YOU know how much money they may or may not lose/gain from it? No, you don’t.

You’re right. We don’t. Then again, we don’t have the burden of proof either. You’re the one that wants a change. The burden is on YOU to prove that the change would be worth it to Arena.net.

I would be much more likely to buy a skin if it was unlimited use, but that’s not actually the point of this thread. This thread is a suggestion, and thus it is here to pose an idea, and get feedback on that idea, such as pros and cons.

Give out a service while making money is sure their goal, but an unhappy customer base may result in a much less desiderable outcome.

And how many unhappy customers do you think it will create when you make their multiple purchases worthless and demand refunds (thus costing you money)?

Keep it as it is. It doesn’t need changing, and will only cause headaches if they do.

And leaving it how it is doesn’t cause headaches and lost revenue, how? This thread proves there are unhappy potential customers right now.

it also doesn’t prove they have lost revenue or are losing money nor does it prove they will gain money.. people be like “You will gain more money!” uhh.. No. it’s not how business works, pretty sure they should’ve taught this in school

It doesn’t disprove it either. Do YOU know how much money they may or may not lose/gain from it? No, you don’t.

And if it’s true for me, I wonder how many others this would be true for?

Are you people insane? That’s like saying I would buy food/gas/electric/toilet paper if they were re-usable.

That analogy is terrible, it’s more like “would you buy a t-shirt if it wasn’t reusable?”

I think ANet deserves a little more credit.

I think they expected the community to embrace horizontal progression and instead they got a lot of “there’s nothing to doooooo” whining.

Its been shown in threads similar to this that those sort of comments were hardly overwhelming at the time.

In the first few months of the game there really wasn’t that much to do, and of the few things to do, a lot of people complained about grinding. (grinding dungeons for skins, grinding for legendaries, grinding for map completion, grind for karma).

Would the profit lost from people buying the same skin multiple times be more then the profit gained from people who now feel the skins are worth the price.

Looking at League of Legends’ incredibly successful skin sales I’m going to go ahead and say no. The issue with the current gem shop is that very few things are actually worth it. With the current transmutation system in place buying more than one skin really is pointless for most of the playerbase who won’t bother grinding out more than one set.

I think they would see an increase in skin sales if they were unlimited use, which I think is what you were implying, also.

Teq requires a lot of people. It’d probably get a lot more interest if they removed the timer.

but whats wrong with that? it didnt make ANY sense whatsoever that a 10 man team could do teq by themselves. Why cant the GW2 pop actually enjoy a challenge instead of wanting everything handed to them? This is the problem that causes a lot of hardcore MMO players to leave GW2, and im even considering it. Not that anyone cares, just my personal opinion.

This is the only mmo who uses control mechanism to force players to kill, with limitedly time.

Not only that, it completely violates any Fun mechanics in this game.

The reason, many left; (not saying your reasons aren’t valid), is because of Arena.nets’ control mechanics of punishing players who don’t abide to their ways of “fun”.

Phy is 100% correct, what is so interesting about being controlled and punished by a tyrant and an oppression mechanic; a.k.a “timer”

My server finally woken up and refuse to submit to this “timer”.

fair enough, but i really dont htink anet was trying to control and punish you. Theyre jsut trying to add difficulty to the events and add more stuff that needs doing in order to make it more fun. I mean, can you really say that the old teq was fun? or even shatt or jormag, when all you have to do is sit there with auto on? the events were EXTREMELY easy, and thus, boring. Therefore, they tried to make it more engaging and difficult. Did they execute that properly? Maybe not, but at least theyre working on it.

You can make it more fun without adding an automatic failure mechanic that punishs smaller servers. Does a timer really make it fun? All I’ve seen it does is add anxiety and frustration.

Then make a server announcement for bosses like this. Teq doesn’t have a lengthy pre event, he shows up, and then leaves. With it being a tight dps race people need a chance to get there.

I don’t think world bosses should have timers, anyway, since that scales horribly with group size/composition.

The aspects of an expansion that we’ve not really had are changes to core gameplay mechanics, or significant changes to how you play the game. Does LS count as an expansion? No, but that doesn’t mean we need an expansion to get expansion quality content.

They easily could make healing matter quite a bit.

For example, they could introduce an encounter where there’s constant uncleansable DoTs thrown around such that you need a healer to constantly group heal to keep the party on the safe side.

And then one player drops a water field and the party spam blast finishers to get their health back up mid fight. All in dps gear. I don’t even know what you guys are talking about, dps groups are the ones who have the most boons active since they know how to support their party properly mid fight with blocks, reflection, fury, might, etc. just because you can’t watch yourself bring hp bars up or tank doesn’t mean support doesn’t have a roll, it just means you don’t like the kind of support present in this game, in which case I suggest you stop playing since obviously you can’t comprehend it.

How would I know it’s a water field and not an aoe blind field? What if I don’t have a blast finisher, or it’s on cooldown? What if the field is 20 ft to the left?

Support is an afterthought, a secondary aspect to DPS.
