Season 1 Boxes - Duplication Needs To Go

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pifil.5193

This. I bought 40 of the first boxes and 40 of the new boxes, and mostly got duplicates of minis I had already unlocked. Out of my 80 total boxes, I only got 1 skin of value and about 200 currency sprocket things; everything else was duplicates and junk. These boxes really feel like more of a waste of money and a gamble than the regular black lion chests do.

Thanks for doing that, I’m serious, now I know not to bother with these boxes at all.

Season 1 Boxes - Duplication Needs To Go

The duplication of account bound items in these boxes is a major issue. Minis, skins, passes, and items that you have LITERALLY 0 ability to use and can’t sell are a huge letdown and, since these are bought with gems, a waste of money. If you are going to put in tons of account bound on acquire items, give us sprockets on duplication or outright reroll anything that we already have.

Yeah, the ability to at least trade in duplicates for sprockets is needed. I considered spending some of gems on those boxes but just about everything in those boxes would be a duplicate for me (I got duplicates on the free boxes) so I’m not doing that. Good for those who missed LS1, of course.

Also about putting food and other consumables in these cases; meh, those are such a poor value proposition especially considering most of them are still available in game. Putting in items that were sold in the gem store like the costumed quaggan tadpoles or toxic skins is also a poor way to pad out the drop tables, IMO. There should have been only one type of Season 1 box, one without all the filler.

Suggestion: Sell Small Scale Content Packs!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pifil.5193

I’m quite happy buying stuff in the gemstore with my CC but I can’t believe anyone really wants ArenaNet to carve off otherwise free content to sell it to them. Doing this just splits the playerbase (there’s a reason why the fractals they added after HoT are available in the base game).

No, I prefer their small content packs (like those we get with the LS episodes) remain free and their large content packs (expansions) cost money.

Pifil.5193

I could see Firebrand with Tomes and Mantras supporting allies from behind. Only then, the Axe is pointless. If you however, stick with Axe, you probably need to avoid Mantras (and Tomes).

They can support allies easily so long as the firebrand moves to behind the enemy that they’re fighting. You don’t all have to on the same side of the mob, after all. Close range, melee support.

Elite Specializations and no new classes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pifil.5193

They said that they’re pretty much done with adding professions now they have 3 of each class type. This was stated a few times around the launch of HoT.

If they added another profession then we’d have to also have 10 new elite specs and then there would be complaints that the new profession only has one elite spec and every one else has two and it’s really unfair and they should retroactively add a HoT elite spec for that one and so on and so forth.

There’s little point in bloating the profession roster when the elite specs offer such great potential.

Do we really have to call it Minstrel gear?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pifil.5193

I see a lot of different images on that google search from medieval paintings and cosplayers to the Black and White Minstrel show that you’re alluding to. I know which one ArenaNet are referring to. You know what they’re referring to.

If, despite knowing that, you still have a problem with equipping Minstrel gear then don’t. However, equipping Minstrel gear doesn’t make your Elementalist a Minstrel it just means an Elementalist is wearing a type of gear for the stats. When you see characters in the world you see Elementalists and Tempests, not Berserkers and Minstrels. Well you do see Berserkers but those are warrior elite specs. Put it another way, equipping Balthazar Runes doesn’t somehow make your character a follower of Balthazar.

PS Emmalouise, Galaxy Minstrels are great! For those who are unfamiliar; they melt in your mouth, not in your hands! So that means clean hands and mouth full of chocolatey goodness.

I personally wouldn’t put much stock in any “waste of dev time” arguments.

That’s a matter for ArenaNet to decide, not anyone on these forums. Make your suggestion but be aware that, as others have said, ArenaNet have limited resources and a very busy schedule so even things that seem quite simple might never be addressed because there will always be something that has a higher priority.

It doesn’t bother me, doing the content was so much better than getting the rewards. I was looking at the content of both chests and realised that I have everything they can drop. I don’t think I use a single one of them on any character.

Wouldn’t mind a jet pack or one or two of the wings that were rare drops but it’s not worth opening dozens of chests in the hope of getting enough tokens. I don’t think it’s a good or satisfying way of reintroducing the rewards. Just another gambling chest.

T6 Leather still massively inflated

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pifil.5193

Pifil.5193

With the imbalance between the T5 and T6 materials I have decided to not bother crafting exotic armour. I believe that the real solution is to balance the required number of scraps and sections, 2 cloth scraps and 2 leather sections for all tiers.

Restore balance that way first then changes to drops/salvage rates can be adjusted and sinks can be introduced as required.

Similarly they need to balance the recipes better. As it is you need 8 cloth scraps and 30 leather sections for a Gossamer insignia. That imbalance is part of the reason why Gossamer is dirt cheap and leather so expensive.

Then, after undoing the harm their changes did, they should “lock” down the recipes and not fiddle with them anymore.

Loved the Deadeye but would have liked to try it in PvE.

For the Weaver I’d say give attunement swap an ammo count so that you can rapidly double switch attunement to use the same double attunement or choose to mix them. If you use both charges at one then it can have a little longer cooldown.

Apparently they lost them somehow.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4fjrxt/we_are_the_gw2_dev_team_here_to_chat_with_you/d2akjpp/

Ok, so it looks like those weapon skins were originally created to be paired up with some of the armors for skill videos and the Beta experience. Then they apparently got lost in the mists between teams and never got hooked up, or were hooked up incorrectly so players never saw them again… Or at least until my team gets their hands on them!

I guess the team hasn’t gotten their hands on them yet.

It’s important to note that the skins aren’t lost, they’re in the game (the chat codes work and you can preview them in game). They’re just not accessible in game. As that quote is from over a year ago I guess the team isn’t all that focused on “finding” these items again.

Anets server maintenance method

I was browsing through reddit, and their was a discussion on how back in 2005 GW1 has been able to apply updates without the servers going down for maintenance, and only requiring a reset. Some were saying Anet has this technology patented?

Is that way some games that came out recently still have to go down like every week for a few hours?

No. Lots of games don’t need extensive downtime to patch.

It depends on how those other companies are organised and how their servers/game clients are coded. Nothing to do with ArenaNet.

Yeah, very true.

To OP, if it bothers you that much then skip ahead, do the first instance of the hot story which unlocks masteries and you can start “earning” XP again. You can go back to finishing your personal story then.

Of course you’ll only earn a little more before your XP bar fills and you have to earn mastery points in order to “unlock” it again. Either way I don’t think it makes sense to create an XP bank for the tiny portion of people that this effects.

As a demo it was pretty bad. Instead of hyping people up they just showed very boring story instance, a not even that big empty map and implied that new specs are made with only pvp and wvw in mind. Nice start lol.

That’s a good point, this was a demo, not a beta.

When I got out of the demo instance I basically rode around a bit and there was very little happening. I went back to WvW (I think) feeling a bit underwhelmed and hoping they deactivated stuff for the demo. As a demo it did a bad job of showing how exciting PoF is.

At least, I hope it did a bad job, if there really is that little to do then it’s a bad sign.

ArenaNet are using digital river in order to be tax compliant in the countries they operate in. At least they won’t get sued by the EU (and others) that way. I presume they use euro for everyone in Europe outside the UK. Sucks a bit but is easier and more predictable that way.

Dear Arena Net, just let us pay for American product in American prices – in USD, what is so strange, then no one will feel ‘scammed’ or whatever.

Will you then also pay US taxes that are added to with purchase and that don’t show up on the price listed?

My taxes for the Ultimate added an additional $6.60 to the total.

So $36.59 in total then, that’d be €31.11 at current exchange rates, so it’s actually currently more expensive than the euro price.

I got the Ultimate, $79.99 plus $6.60 in taxes to make a total of $86.59.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. Still $32.01 is €27.21 so it looks less and less like a reason for rioting to me.

Played both, I like a lot of it but ArenaNet’s policy of only showing us anything when it’s ready to go means that once again it’ll probably be too late to do anything with feedback. Not that they’ve given anyone much time or scope to give feedback. A couple of demo weekends isn’t enough.

I just hope they have time and development resources set apart for some serious reworking after launch.

Get it from Amazon.com or from some other physical retailer. It’ll probably work with your European GW2 account.

You’ll have to pay shipping though, and maybe import duties. Amazon.co.uk would probably work too and the GBP/NOK exchange rate may work out better for you. And with both countries being members of the EU/European Single Market you won’t have to pay any import duties from the UK.

Neither are currently stocking the game so you’ll have to wait until closer to release.

Build template in pof?

(I don’t know why and honestly, I don’t care. I’d rather they started implementing incomplete solutions and work-arounds than to leave us with nothing. Snapshots of builds that we can’t load would be better than no snapshots, for example.)

Yeah, I fully agree. It doesn’t have to be 100% complete and fully featured in order to be useful. I’d be happy with it just remembering my traits and skills, for example. I can swap gear manually.

That would be good. I’m even more forgiving: take a snapshot that gets placed side by side: I can match traits & skills to that easily. Sure, that’s more work, but I’d rather have something that makes it so I don’t have to memorize choices.

Oh yeah, I see, yeah that’d be fine too. Anything really.

It’s a pity though, they have the beginnings of this already in the game. Just go to the sPvP lobby on any character, bring up your pvp build and select a default build from the bottom right. When you do it’ll equip weapons, select amulet, runes, sigils, skills, choose pets on rangers and so on. The entire build is applied.

Of course it’s easier in PvP, you can select the first greatsword you come across, you don’t have to worry about stats and all.

The renegade sb 1 is actually a combination of ranger’s pierce trait and engi’s pistol 1 explosion on contact.

So… should we cry power creep?

Renegade shortbow one is basically a slightly worse version of engineer’s pistol one. It does slightly less damage and has a shorter bleed.

I dunno where the ranger’s pierce trait comes into this.

I always envisioned the Guardian as a offshoot of the Paragon. The Revenant seems to be an analog to the Rit. Dervish doesn’t seem to have anything similar to it though.

That’s exactly it, guardians are kind of a melding of paragon and dervish. Turret engineer is mechanically similar to ritualist too. I recall ArenaNet saying that in the run up to GW2’s release.

Well… VAT isn’t a good reason cause 29.99$=25.41€

VAT is 20% so without VAT (29.99€x80/100) the game would cost = 23.99€

As a european, I feel scammed by Anet here…

Really? You feel “scammed”? According to your figures $29.99 is €25.41, right?

If they were to charge you in US dollars they would have to charge 20% VAT on that (which is EU law). 20% of €25.41 would be €5.08.

€25.41 + €5.08 = €30.49. So you’re actually getting a 50c discount.

Regardless, it’s a fairly standard business practice to pick a price point (that includes the relevant taxes) and to stick to it, to not change your products prices constantly just because of some currency exchange rate fluctuation.

Edit: ah, I see Galen Grey already said this, I missed the post somehow.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Well you’d have to consider traits, utilities and the other shortbow skills and other weapon skills. An actual build is not a single skill after all.

Also, the revenant skill has a half second cast time so it’s a slower weapon than the ranger one.

Ranger activation time is half-second too. So it is same speed.

Activation and cast time are kinda different though. Check the links you provided and you’ll see it’s instant, it has no cast time. You click the button and an arrow comes out instantly whereas the revenant short bow has a 1/2 second cast time. As in you click the button, you start to cast and then half a second later an arrow comes out. A cast bar means it can be interrupted easily.
Ranger shortbow also has a slightly faster rate of fire too.

Anyway, as I said already an actual build is not a single skill. Focussing on a single skill is pointless.

I feel like this game lacks something...

These were lost; they are missing from ANet’s backups (and no, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, either, but that’s apparently what happened). They have to recreate them (not quite from scratch, since remnants of the details remain).

…how can they be lost from the game, if the chatcodes still work?

You’re right, they’re not “lost”, they’re still in the game.

At the moment they’re just not “hooked up” to anything so there is no way they can be acquired. I can only assume they originally intended to have some means where revenants could unlock these, probably something like the mistward armour collections (maybe it was those collections or that method that was “lost”).

It’s pretty apparent that their release schedule leaves them little time for fixing or adding “old” content but at this late stage they should simply mail a skin item copy to anyone with a revenant.

Erm, not 100% sure what you mean. There are new chests in the new areas as in new boxes you run up to and use to get loot, these drop from them. They also seem to take the place of the various loot bags like Vine Caches, Mushroom Caches, Recovered Priory Expedition/SCAR/Pale Reaver Chest (which is great).

Does the new map have (for example) Airship Cargo items all over that you can only open with (again, for example) Crowbars?

Oh yes, it does, there are traders caches that you need a trade key to open. They don’t seem to contain these unidentified gear items though, they contain trade contracts (new map currency) and chests of basic materials, ingots, bolts, planks etc.

The Mounts are Useless

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pifil.5193

Pifil.5193

Problem is, instead of proposing a new addition to gameplay that in combination with what already exists creates more choices, PoF is actually banishing any advancement obtained through HoT masteries, replacing them with mounts masteries.
Mounting is not a choice, but a requirement, and an artificially created one, which also depends on eliminating previous choices.

This is expected since PoF is standalone and doesn’t require HoT. If PoF zones required HoT masteries then HoT would be essential and not optional.

Yes, I think it’s very important for people to remember that PoF is standalone. There are going to be a lot of people who don’t have any HoT masteries playing it. If there were a bunch of updrafts, leylines and mushrooms dotted about the place then people would get the feeling that they need to go back and get their HoT masteries.

If there were a bunch of updrafts, leylines and mushrooms around the maps then it would also give an immediate advantage to people who played HoT; “so I can unlock my skimmer mount and get its mastery level 4 to get past this part of the map and access that area over there or… I can jump on that leyline and glide over there now.”

A key thing for people to appreciate is that the reverse is also true. PoF mounts will work in HoT zones and will be great there but HoT masteries will still be required for a lot of the content like nuhoch wallows, mushrooms, gliding, leylines, updrafts and so on.

This is good, if nothing else it gives a real reason why people will want to and need to play the expansion. If it wasn’t the case and HoT masteries were heavily used in PoF we’d have even more threads about how mounts are useless and not required.

Speak with your wallet.

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and see if this is the actual direction they go… Would I still be able to get a refund if they implement this and I don’t want to play it?

I think the point of getting a refund now is that you can always buy it again if you like the direction they go with. If they actually change anything, of course.

You should go through customer support for the refund, of course, don’t do a chargeback on your card, that will shut down your account.

And also Ember Bay, Bitterfrost Frontier and Lake Doric added ascended backpacks with selectable stats, it’s fair to say that there are enough cheap options now that they don’t need to worry about this.

The Bloodstone backpack is the best one, of course, it has an incredibly cheap way of changing your backpack’s stats (it only costs 100 unbound magic).

Do they have a merchant value?

Yep, 1s 26c.

There are a lot of good arguments for and against.

I’m still waiting to hear the first “good argument” for this.

The only arguments that some might call “good” for this are actually arguments for saving bag space. This specific system is not necessary to save bag space so those arguments don’t mean anything.

Yeah, if this Unidentified Gear was a bag that you could choose to either salvage or open (for free, whenever, wherever you wanted) then the idea would be largely be heralded as a huge improvement. There would still be the issue that you can’t choose to omit these from the list when you select “salvage all x” on your salvage kits. This means that you can’t just hit “salvage all” as easily if you’re planning on identifying them and is an actual loss of functionality but leaving them out of that list and adding a fourth option to “salvage all containers” would work.

Instead with the way it’s been implemented and with the terminology they’ve chosen the message is that in “PoF you have heart vendors that charge you a fee in order to identify your own unidentified gear”. It feels like you’re being charged to get your “real” equipment, that your “unidentified gear” is basically just a bill that must be paid in order to get the “real” loot (rares, exotics etc) and with the price being charged that “real” loot is probably worth less than what you paid for it.

Hero point cost of new Specializations

I would assume it will cost as much as those in the HoT expansion. A lot of people are banking on unlocking the elite specialisation straight away and playing it from the start of the expansion.

They created the expectation that you will be able to do that when they launched HoT. If it’s going to cost more then they should have said something by now.

Do you get MP for each Personal Story?

I’ve been lacking on completeing my personal stories on characters, and I was curious if you get a mastery point for completing each version of the personal story, or just one.

Thanks.

You get one mastery point for completing each chapter in the story. So you’ll get one for completing any level 10 story arc, then another for any level 20 story arc and so on. So if you do the level 10 human stories you’ll get one mastery point if you then do the level 10 charr stories you won’t get a second.

Unidentified gear - Please No, No, No, Nooooo

I feel like there there is a major misunderstanding as to what unidentified gear is.
There is no exotic or precursor “hiding” under there, it is simply a generic salvage item called “unidentified gear”. It doesn’t preroll anything.
You can either salvage it right there for profit or use it as a currency to gamble for good gear with heart vendors, which will on average always net you a loss. That’s how gambling works.

Identifying it on heart vendors is essentially the same thing as flushing your gear down the Mystic Forge, which gives you a chance of the next tier.
You’re not losing anything.

You are losing something though. There’s an opportunity cost here that not everyone seems to understand. That is (lemme get a definition from wikipedia):

“the opportunity cost, also known as alternative cost, is the value (not a benefit) of the choice of a best alternative cost while making a decision. A choice needs to be made between several mutually exclusive alternatives; assuming the best choice is made, it is the “cost” incurred by not enjoying the benefit that would have been had by taking the second best available choice."

So there is an opportunity cost associated with choosing to salvage and also an opportunity cost associated with choosing to ID it (and probably then salvage the results). To say you’re not losing out on anything by choosing one of these mutually exclusive paths is just not true. It’s more accurate to say that you don’t care about the opportunity costs but not everyone feels the same way.

As it stands “just salvage the stuff” seems to be the best route. The alternative “id the stuff” path seems pretty poor at present given the costs associated with it. So the obvious, default answer becomes “just salvage the stuff” but it should be a more balanced choice, IMO.

The answer is simple, either determine the rarity when the Unidentified Equipment drops so you get green or yellow or orange Unidentified Equipment (which removes all doubt as to what the best path with the loot is) or reduce the cost of identifying loot (which leaves the flexibility choice but feels like you’re making less of a dumb move when you ID a bunch of stuff and blues and greens).

(I increasingly prefer the second route, I like the choice the cost for the service is just too high.)

The Issue With PoF

The point is Im asking for other means of transportation outside of mounts, As an alternative to using mounts IF I DONT WANT TO. We already bought one expansion, did masteries and ect I should not have to SKIP the whole expansion because I dont like mounts. That is bad business, and just an utter disregard for the people who bought the previous product.

Im not asking for it to be required, but for it to be an option for those of us who want to do the content (outside of story) without mounts. I should be able to explore the map anyway I want, and use the “Joy of Movement” I prefer.

You don’t have to skip the whole expansion because you don’t like mounts. The mounts will not be required for the vast majority of the expansion. You will have to mount occasionally to do some content or travel to certain areas. Once you get there you can dismount again, if desired.

This is inevitable, some content will require you to be mounted in the same way that some content in HoT required a particular mastery. Most of the time in HoT you have a choice too; you can use the updrafts or mushrooms or leylines or you can take a longer route on foot.

I wouldn’t be opposed to some updrafts or mushrooms or whatever but as people don’t need HoT in order to play PoF it makes sense that only PoF masteries should be required for PoF.
