Consider answering questions like “What Jumping Puzzles am I missing?” or “Which weapon should I be working on?”

I’d love it if when sorting by completion, fulled completed tracks could be placed on the bottom of the list.

Well that made me think of an episode of QI.

If it was an epidose of QI, I’d tell you that in German, Kiel (pronounced “keel”) is a city by the sea, and Keil (pronounced “kyle”) means “wedge”.

It is thus very easy for Germans to get the ie/ei thing right.

IC: Magic weapons are not crafted to withstand physical blows: that’s why they’re crafted by artificers rather than weaponsmiths. A staff or want would just… break.

OOC: I’d rather they took the time and introduced actual pole-arms and actual spears (they’re not interchangeable).

I think the plethora of Badges of Honor is a huge deal for people that want legenedaries but are too scared to go into WvW to earn them and/or only farm JPs. The AP rewards you with every badge you will need for your legendary (500).

From AP rewards, I will have enough Badges of Honor for both the Gift of Battle and a complete set of pvt armour. That is very, very practical to me.

However, what is the whole point of Gift of Battle, if not to make players give WvW a try for some time?

Free WvW badges defeat the purpose of Gift of Battle entirely.

Quartz availability now and after?

http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/43773

Even if the home instance nodes are the only source of quartz after this event – by the ned of the month, the market will be so swamped with quartz that it will be a long, long, long time until supply runs dry (if ever).
They are currently at 42 copper a piece.

Not many people want to craft celestial armour and weapons in the first place – and those who do, need to be level 400 in the respective craft(s), and they need the recipes. The recipes will be the bottleneck! They will probably go up in price after the event.

And most people who want celestial items are already crafting them right now. quartz

I wouldn’t worry about the quartz supply as it will always outshine the demand.

Unless new recipes are added to the game that require quartz, but if ANet adds new recipes, I am very certain that they will also add new ways to obtain quartz.

Transmutation & item names

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

As far as I understand, an item consists of:

  • A stat combination
  • A look
  • An optional upgrade component

All of this information is also in the item’s name. Example:

Carrion (stats) Pirate coat (looks) of the Dolyak (upgrade)

When I use transmutation, I get to pick which stats combination, which look and which upgrade component I want to keep.

However, the name only changes in part 2 and 3.

Example: I now have a Berserkers Pirate Coat of the Pirate

  • with Pirate Coat look
  • with Pirate rune
  • but with celestial stats!

Surely the item should be called Celestial Pirate Coat of the Pirate? There is nothing “berserker” about it.

And the Bazaar chapter is the best chapter so far.

This is why I prefer the Living World concept over expansions – you can steadily improve things.

+1, I agree.

That being said, when I unwrapped my armour skin this morning, it did actually say “this armour type is unusable by your profession”, so it looks to me like the gloves don’t just LOOK heavy, they ARE heavy armour only. So you would’t be able to use them on your elementalist/ranger even if you wanted.

That being said, I didn’t try it. So I don’t know whether it is possible to apply this heady armour skin to a medium or light pair of gloves despite the warning.

The skin you get off the hero panel can be applied to any type of armor. I applied it to all three types to check. (And promptly put my HoM skins back on to the medium and light gloves).

Thanks for the clarification!

If no one speaks up, then ANet and the community will assume everything is A-OK, and they will continue to push the game engine. There will be a point in which the number of players experiencing issues exceeds a reasonable amount. We need conversations like this to happen. We need players to submit support tickets, we need YouTube videos, and webpages showing problems others are having.

As a community we need to not be so quick to brush off these issues. We need to accept that fact that no one player deserves special treatment. We need to explore these issues, understand them, and do everything we can to make the experience enjoyable for as many as possible.

Quoted for truth.

Post 3/3

Criticism:

  • It is an absolute shame that thousands of players cannot take part in what I think is the best Living Story chapter to date, for reasons beyond their control. The skill lag should have been at least acknowledged, but better, addressed by ANet.
I fixed this for me by signing up for a VPN server set in the US, which reduced my lag to “playable”, but I don’t think that it should be expected that players pay for their internet connection twice.
  • ANet, please communicate deadlines better. Or at all.

TL;DR: This was the best update so far. What it lacked in story progression, it made up for in style, mini-games that were fun, and a good balancing of achievements. The whole thing was sadly tainted by many players’ latency issues and ANet’s unwillingness to communicate.

Many many happy smileys, and only one very big sad smiley (for the skill lag thing).

Other Items

  • Celestial recipes, quartz, infused quartz, etc.: I have no problem with any of this. I’m now slowly crafting myself a “magic find” armour set, because why not?
  • Fortune scraps, aspect back pieces and helmets: I wasn’t too interested in the back pieces and helmets, so I spent me scraps on boxes (hunting for recipes). I hope that that doesn’t bite me in the back later – will I need fortune scraps to buy or craft a kite later? I think that the scraps were dropping at a pretty low rate (although I was lucky a few times and dropped as much kitten scraps from one fortune). However, this system is still vastly better and fairer than RNG skin tickets. Please stay on this road, ANet!
  • Cliffs traders accepting various items for payment: Handy.

Items that I want

These are items that I wish were in the game as rewards, and/or that I would have bought for money.

  • Maddie’s hair self-style kit.
  • Light/medium looking aspect helmets (masks, or something).

Sanctum Sprint

Sanctum Sprint is probably my favourite mini-game so far, and that says a lot, as I don’t really like racing games (Mario Kart and such) and I’m not very good at them either. But for some reason, I found myself returning to Sanctum Sprint even when I was done with all the achievements.

  • Sanctum Sprint achievements: This time, ANet, I think you got it exactly right. You rewarded us for playing (total number of races, try each skill once, generous reward) more than for winning (1 win, and 1 top three placement). For me, that resulted in very relaxed play. I played it for the sake of it. (I remember grinding the Crab Toss and Dragonball all night without having much fun e_e)

Belcher’s Bluff

I enjoyed this mini-game already when I had to drink somebody under the table in my personal story. In gaming, I usually prefer logic and puzzles to physical action/dexterity games, so it is great to see a mini-game with a strong focus on out-thinking the opponent. I know that the NPCs were a source of frustration for some players, but I was lucky, it took me only a few tries. I enjoy playing other players more than playing NPCs.

  • Belcher’s Bluff achievements: fair and not too grindy, epecially as therer is no time constraint here, at least for the PvP ones. For the futher achievements, you only have to play other players, not actually win.
  • But what will happen to Poyaqui after the Bazaar ends? If the Labyrinthine Cliffs are removed from the map, will he move to Lion’s Arch instead? Will players still be able to play him, and get his special skill, which is needed for the achievements listed under “General”, not under “Living World”? Remains to be seen!
  • Unlimited Belching: 100 gold was too steep for me. I would have bought the item for 10-20 gold though.

sPvP map

I haven’t tried it yet, but I will always be happy to see more PvP maps that look less human-centric.

New Achievement UI

Some improvements, but overall less practical than the old UI. I feel that ANet missed their chance to make this look good and be useful. But I have covered that in detail here.

Achievement Point rewards

  • I am in two minds about this. On one hand, it’s nice to suddenly swim in WvW tokens. I got both the gift of battle and a pvt armour set without ever stepping foot into WvW. As convenient as this is for me: It completely defeats the purpose of Gift of Battle.
  • I was disappointed that the armour skins were heavy, and that you have to choose between th radiant and hellfire gloves (I wanted both pairs of gloves but none of the helmets), it’s all been said elsewhere.
(The molten gloves and dragon helmet had heavy looks already, too. It’s seriously getting a bit one-sided.)
  • You shouldn’t be forced to make a decision that you will regret later.
  • The rest is fine. Free gold, wheeeee!

Here’s my feedback. I have a lot of opinions on this chapter, so I am going to keep each section as brief as possible, but there was a ton of new stuff.

Post 1/3
___________________________________________________

The Story

  • The scene in Lion’s Arch was very enjoyable.
  • Other than that, there was little to no story progression with Kiel/Gnashblade.
  • However, instead we got the Zephyrites. I wonder whether they will play a larger role in future chapters (I hope so).

Map: Labyrinthine Cliffs

I love it here!

  • Visual Design: I think we all agree that it looks absolutely beautiful. Many players have waited for a hint of Cantha, and all the new textures and building designs give them hope. The rest of us just enjoy the scenery.
  • From a mechanics point of view: I think this map is not enjoyable for players who hate jumping puzzles. I love exploring and I love jumping puzzles and the aspect skills (when they were working) were super fun to use. I just wish they weren’t broken (see below at the very end of this post).
  • From a technical standpoint: There is one bamboo beam that I keep trying to jump on but it isn’t solid and I fall to my death. But compared to what was (and still is) wrong with the Southsun Cove map, this is nothing. Good quality.
  • ANet, please take note of us wanting to keep this map (sans kite ship and traders), as stated in several discussions.

Extras, NPCs, Dynamic Events

  • Kookoochoo’s Fire Show: all around lovely. Kookoochoo is the best. He should be a mini.
  • Zephyrite teacher and song: I kept missing it but I saw it on youtube. Kudos for putting work into such details. They do make a difference.
  • NPC dialoges: funny and interesting. Just hanging out on this map was its own reward.
  • Dynamic events: Loved the idea with the artifacts. The only thing that bothered me was that you had to drop your aspect skills in order to fight the monsters. I didn’t have that problem as I could switch to my engineer kits and back without dropping the aspect skills, but many other players (understandably) ignored the fights completely, especially during their hunt for sky crystals.
  • Kite fortunes: Lovely.

Bazaar Achievements

  • As I said above, I enjoy jumping puzzles, and parcour-ing around the map in order to find sky crystals was wonderful. I also liked that you “only” had to find 40 – just about doable without losing my mind, but also left me with something to do for fun (without any kind of pressure) later, long after achievement completion. Well done
  • I could have done without World vs. Kite, especially so soon after Blackout Cache.
  • Getting the reward after 16 achievements: good to see you’re continuing on this path.

Environmental kite baskets

Well done, ANet. By making them lootable only once per day, you have significantly decreased the stress of collecting. I could find baskets on every map without having to camp nodes. I think you have now found a mode that works. Keep it that way!

Secondly, the animation of a basket landing was wonderful.

Skritts’ pilfered kite baskets

I think the idea of getting players to try out (or re-visit) content (jumping puzzles, mini-dungeons, fractals) is a good one.

But think the idea of putting a kite in the Obsidian Sanctum was counter-productive on all fronts.

Living Story Rewards

  • Zephyre Sanctum Model: what a wonderful idea! I don’t care that much that it takes up room in the inventory. It is a lovely keepsake for later when the ship has left. As with Marjory’s journal, I wish we could use this to show other players what they’ve missed.
  • Home instance quart node: also a nice idea. I don’t know why the quartz node was placed in the orphanage though.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

The one time I used it I couldn’t loot the chest (and I got that “this is a practice round” message you sometimes get when joining a nearly-finished race), so I think it’s an oversight.

You only get that dialogue if you try to open the chest before crossing the line, BTW.

The practice round dialogue? I get that as soon as I join a race, if the race is already pretty far in. Like if you join in a race that’s already started, they make it a practice round for you since you basically aren’t getting the same chance as everyone else. Plus sometimes it starts you at one of the later checkpoints (possibly the last one the last person passed?) so then you’re not even doing the whole race. I don’t think the practice round has anything at all to do with the shortcut.

It does, though. You get the same line when you try to open the chest before crossing the finish line, which tried once (for science). I’d been in that game from the start.

In order to use the shortcut, you have to run backwards and cross the finish line, and then open the chest afterwards.

This is why I’m convinced that the shortcut wasn’t intended – if it was, it would place you before the finish line and allow you to cross it on your way to the chest, not backwards.

I read that Light Travel only drops when you’re in #7 or lower, and that’s certainly my experience too.

A deliberately let people overtake me shortly before checkpoint #2 for a chance to get Light Travel. It is early enough in the game that one Light Travel will allow me to jump ahead of pretty much everybody and land in #1 – #3.

But then, sometimes it won’t drop and I’m running behind the field for the rest of the game.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I once wrote a dissertation about motivational theories and how they can be applied in the context of e-learning software.

There are different things that motivate people. There are intrinsic motivators (meaning the motivation comes from within you) and extrinsic motivators (someone else gives you a reward).

Different personality types respond to different motivators. As a general rule, introverts are more likely to respond to intrinsic motivators and extroverts are more likely to respond to extrinsic motivators, but it is fairly mixed and individual.

Bottom line: for some people, reward completion is what motivates them to play, and other players find their motivation in other aspects of the game. Guildwars 2 offers a lot of different things so various personality types ALL get hooked and keep playing.

Take one of those motivators away, and you will drive some of the gaming population away.

There is no universal truth – there is no “good motivators” and “bad motivators”.

The fact that you don’t feel you need to achieve achievement completion doesn’t mean you’re right, or better at gaming, or life. It just means that your brain is differently wired.

I hope that explains it, at least a little bit.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I understand both positions, but come on, there is a middle ground.

Yesterday I did some 10 races or so against the same group of people. After we’d played “normal” for a while, the top scorers asked whether there was anyone in the group who didn’t have the achievement yet. There were four. For the next few rounds, not only did the Sanctum Sprint “pros” wait before the finish line, cheering for the racing players, but we also started “walking” the race track.

Everyone who had the achievement did the further races under these conditions: skills 1, 2 and 3 were only used to overcome obstacles. No offensive skills were used. Skill 0 (light travel) was fine to use. The rest of the race we just ran,

It was the most relaxed and fun experience I’d had in a while. While the other players basically raced each other for the achievement (they still raced each other! they were not carried over the finish line!), we had a blast racing each other with a handicap.

Anyway; after a while I had enough and went to bed. Today I was playing with a different group of people and did more competitive races.

What I’m saying is: Everyone is entitled to run the race the way they want to, but the main goal should be to have fun. It is well possible to be competitive one day and relaxed the next day.

This was kind of a neat idea. I mean I don’t really like the idea of handing over an achievement to someone who didn’t earn it…(Not to be mean, just with something as inconsequential and trivial as mini-game achievements, you should really earn them. You don’t NEED them, so idk why people get so upset about it). But it would be a little nice if there were some way to create better matched instances. I mean we’re throwing people who have won 20 times in with people on their first race, people with terrible latency, and people who have been doing okay but still not winning for the past 10 laps. So it’s not always really a fair race, and it would be cool if we could separate it out to y’know the more experienced, the least-experienced/people with lag, and people in the middle.

So like what you guys did was nice cause everybody still earned their title, but you gave the other people a more fair race. And now I’m kind of curious about how this race would go walking it lol. They REALLY atleast need to make a way for parties to do mini-games together…

Yes, it was so much fun. There was a lot of chat going on, in the veins of “I wonder if I can still make #3 to #5 by walking it”.

And what I really liked about it was that the guys who didn’t have the achievement were still competing for it. There was no match-fixing going on. No one was singled out to be the next race’s winner before the match.

We just created even grounds for those who didn’t stand a chance before (for whatever reason(s)).

But most importantly, everyone had the most fun.

It certainly would suck to have this kind of consistant lag, but you seem to be blaming A net for it… or at least for not designing their content to compensate for it.

I’m not sure this is as easy as you make it sound. Your online expirience in any game is largely dependant on your latency. If you are using satalite internet or wireless internet you may just have to avoid certain types of content.

(emphasis mine)

See, but I’m not on satellite or wireless, and I don’t have consistent lag at all. My ping is usually between 50 and 100 during normal play. That includes jumping and everything else.

It is only when using the new “super jump” mechanics (jump pads and aspect skills) that I get massive lag spikes.

So, any more ideas, Sherlock?

Rroxi: I see. I have here a copy of the latest issue of Flame-Broiled Legion magazine, in which you are quoted as saying, “When serving asura, one cannot go wrong with a light white wine.” What do you have to say about that?

Evon Gnashblade: I was talking about when you have asura for dinner. OVER for dinner. As guests! Not the main course. Now, look here, what are you—

Rroxi: Captain Gnashblade, you were at an effigy burning ceremony in Queensdale last week, were you not?

Evon Gnashblade: Yes…

Rroxi: And there was a sylvari there who bumped into the burning effigy and scorched her arm, was there not?

Evon Gnashblade: Yes, what does this—

Rroxi: Is it true, then, as several witnesses have claimed, that immediately following the poor sylvari’s injury you stated that you, and I quote, ‘love the smell of fried cabbage in the morning’?

Evon Gnashblade: Commerce! I said I love the smell of commerce! Aw, stick a fork in it! This interview is DONE!

Well, if you made it all the way to the Sanctum Sprint NPC in the kite ship, your lag can’t be that bad! [sarcasm off]

So, in my own words, this is what happened:

  • Jump pads were introduced with the SAB. Some of us had severe problems with glitchy/laggy jumps and reported it.
  • Jump pads were re-used in Dragonball. “Dash pads” were added. Some of us had severe problems with glitchy/laggy jumps and reported it.
  • Jump pads were re-used in both the Aetherblade dungeon and the jumping puzzle. Some of us had severe problems with glitchy/laggy jumps and reported it.

ANet’s reaction to all this:

“So the jump pad mechanics screw over our users with the slightest lag? Let’s make an entire update based on them! Not just the mini-game/dungeon/jumping puzzle – let’s go all out and make them mandatory for PvE!”

Some of use had severe problems with glitchy/laggy jumps and reported it.

So now almost the entire Eastern hemisphere is missing out on content, and… we have severe problems with glitchy/laggy jumps and reported it.

ANet’s reaction? None.

Sauntering into the sunset (slow mounts)

Hi all! I’m PixelPumpkin. You may remember me as the person who doesn’t like the idea of mounts in GW2 very much. I always said that I don’t want/need a mount, but more importantly, that I don’t want YOU to have a mount. Why, you say?

  • Unnecessary clutter
  • All the players on mounts making GW2 look a bit ridiculous
  • More clutter
  • Trying to find an NPC wedged between 14 Dolyaks’ butts
  • GW2’s landscapes, with their caves and rooms and all, are not designed for anything bigger than a Charr. Just imagine trying to swim your shark through that hole on your way to Griffonrook run.

I just imagine that as not very practical, or awesome for me to look at in great quantity.

However. I just thought of a way that would “fix” that for me.

If we had mounts in game

  • that were slower than our characters’ running speed (speed of Dolyak escort mission / walking speed)
  • that couldn’t jump or swim, similar to our own transformed selves
  • that couldn’t enter combat

With these restrictions in place,

  • you would be able to have your silly mount – you just wouldn’t want to ride it all the time
  • the areas where we play the game (combat and jumping and all) would be almost 100% free of the additional clutter
  • but during those times when you’re just standing around goofing off, you’d summon your Dolyak* and take it for a sweet walk
  • it could actually make for some sweet roleplaying scenarios

( * I am using Dolyaks as an example because I love those hairy buggers the most and would probably get one for myself after all.)

TL;DR: So, yes, add mounts, but make them impractical to use that people only use them rarely / consciously. (Same as transformation potions)

It’s truly a shame that this isn’t taken into consideration when programming content like this. It’s even been stated by ArenaNet on several occasions that the lag between Oceania and their servers is purely on their end and they’ve been ‘looking into it’ for over 8 months now.

Very sad.

I am genuinely conflicted.

My character (as well as I) would always vote for Ellen Kiel.
But I also kinda want the Molten Facility back 100 times more than the Aetherblade retreat.

What to do O_O

For what reasoning?

I enjoyed the MF a lot more, so did my entire circle of friends.
