To be honest, the developers words do not inspire confidence. This is even worse since players are beginning to whine about increasing the buff cap from 5 to 10. Also this thing about tanking is even making me more angry, the only solace I can take is that I wont bother with raids. I want to do them, but the design decisions are not inspiring confidence. They brought up tanking and dps race and all you can do is laugh at the poor necromancer having no role.

Unless boon control becomes important for example, necros will never be needed.

No offense to ANet, but they aren’t known for being good players. I’ve seen their PvP streams more than enough to know I wouldn’t trust them when it comes to high level gameplay. Necromancer would need some insane buffs to be worth bringing over Ele.

It shouldn’t really be that shocking to anybody. It is a common occurrence for developers of a game to be less skilled that players.

Players generally have all the time to dedicate to the game to hone their skills. Developers usually work on a very specific items and probably are not inclined to waste more of their time, playing said game at home.

Low R20 Entry to Ranked May be Bad News

I am not in favor of R20 for one key item. It just hides the fact that ANET has a broken matchmaking system. The PvP rank actually should have nothing to do with matchmaking.

Instead, it should be about ACTUAL game results. When a new player joins, they should be matched with others who either are new, or who have the lowest MMR ratings.

Also shows why solo queue needs to be added since that system will work really well there.

Your argument only works because you assume there are a lot of player playing PvP. matchmaking doesn’t not create players, it only groups up players based on the # of players available at a very specific moment in time.

Maybe matchmaking is broken, but that is something you cannot possibly know unless there are a lot of players PvPing and quite frankly that is not the case.

Even if they adjusted the MMR to be lower for brand new players, they would still be group up with higher MMR players IF there are few low MMR players.

Other game sometimes ban characters, so it really isn’t that big of a deal.

The problem with elementalist is its fundamental nature makes it impossible to balance without crippling the kitten class again. Celestial isn’t the problem with the class.

So they have to do a lot to rework it or risk ruining the class.

A lol of people are perfectly OK with long waits and good for them. But a lot of players are not. You gotta do what you gotta do. You can’t magically spawn 1000 ppl.

You can’t keep pushing the rank requirement upwards. The truth is a bad player will always be a bad player, at some point you need to draw a line.

REquiring a rank 20 is good enough, increasing simply makes it a grind that you have to cover come. There are a lot of bad rank 80 players. This system is design to minimize or at least give someone a good MMR before they head into rank.

I actually think they should remove amulets entirely and replace them with fully customizable pve gear.

Then they can balance 2 modes at once, wvw and pvp.

Would pve get affected, most likelly, but honestly, who gives a kitten ? pve is just there to grind skins and gear for wvw.

This is possibly the least intelligent suggestion ever.

Certainly, thats what the perfect balance after 2 years of balancing since launch have demonstrated, oh wait…

Balance will never be achieve in any game with different classes. However, that doesn’t mean you should just say kitten it and implement the worst suggestion EVER.

Working as intended.

If it didn’t work better than separate SoloQ and TeamQ then Anet would revert this change for sure.

Since they didn’t, it means that majority approve of it, love it and enjoy it.

Also some of the complaints about premade vs pugs have been shown to be mistaken.

Also since guild wars 2 is becoming free 2 play, maybe more players will mean separating queues, eventually.

They should of nerfed celestial in their big balance patch but they buffed it instead. And this is the result. You want fun pvp? Dont give 1 amulet way more stats than all the others. Its like playing WoW and being undergeared. Its stupid. Its how it will stay forever. So either quit or stop moaning.

I totally agree celestial amulet should be nerfed. After all, all those necromancer running celestial signet are dominating.

The problem is not the amulet is the class. People complain about developer short slightness but the truth is the players are far more short sighted to the point of 80% legally blindness.

Luckily, we will all see soon if you are correct. Maybe everyone will mostly play stronghold and you will seem like a genius. Maybe it will die a slow death like courtyard and you’ll seem out of touch. We will know soon.

I don’t particularly care if I am right or wrong. I enjoy stronghold and that is all that matters to me. I will eventually get bored of it, just like I got bored of conquest and only dabble with it.

Also I honestly doubt it will die like court yard, mainly because you can directly queue for it. Second, team death match belong only in fps.

Actually he is correct. Yes, it is a good map for those who like PvE and want a bit of PvP on the side. No, it isn’t a good map for those who want to focus mainly on PvP.

Unless they find a way to increase the PvP component and decrease the PvE aspects, it will launch and just have a small fringe group of players (after the initial “check it out” phase).

Casual PvE players love stronghold. PvP players hate it. This is my experience with the gamemode based on my friends, guilds, teammates I had and reddit.

I’m glad you’re amused and I stand by what I said. I’m a current GW1 player. No one whines there.

ANET devs have talked about “button speed” as a “skill.” That’s not skill. As far as I can see there’s no monitoring or penalty for the use of macros either. Again, pressing a macro isn’t skillful.

Because there is no penalty for spamming skills, that is the primary mode of play. Penalize that and you push the game toward players thinking about the next move, not just pounding buttons.

No one whines there because MAYBE the game is dead? Yes, a few people play the game but it isn’t an active game so whining about balance is a waste of time. There is a ZERO chance the game will ever be balanced. So why complain about. In any case, Guild wars 1 when it was active had a lot more balance issues.

OP forgot that beta is about giving feedback and expecting changes. The fact that he is attempting to spin this to mean something different is amazing.

While you can expect changes to be made eventually, you are not entitled to a full list of changes on/by any specific date of your choosing. The devs have already said there will be more changes. This settles the question.

Developers say a lot of things. Second, they never acknowledge any of the problems the tempest has. Finally, compare to the other classes, the changes the tempest got were pathetic. Don’t you find it strange that two of the classes with the most worthless changes just happen to be under the same developer team?

Also this doesn’t settle the problem just because you said so. It might for you, but fortunately people have higher standards than you do. If someone paid money to get into beta in other to provide feedback, it is their right to be heard.

The balance issues are not in the classes at all in my opinion. The fact is that there is a population of players that is significantly more skillful than most. Whatever class they decide is fashionable this week will be OP.

The way to fix balance issues would be to penalize rapid button press style play, as GW 1 does. I literally never hear complaints about balance there.

Seriously people are still QQing when ele is currently the best class in the game and they even buffed Tempest that was basically already fine. Oh come on, Dragonhunter can’t even aim (yes, longbow AA is so slow it can be dodged just walking).

They should nerf Ele before doing tweaks on Tempest, seriously. Ele and Mesmer.

The ele is a patch away from being average. Its current strength lies in how powerful burn is. Take way burn and it goes down.

Let me make this easy for you, the arguments you guys have been making are terrible. There are a lot of variables you guys are clearly ignoring.

Just to be clear, I haven’t once argued against the idea. My goal here was to show you why it will never happen.

The fact of the matter is:
1. f2p pvp only MMORPG do not exist for a reason.

Which is ? Also, if the sPvP part of GW2 went F2P, you’d be hard pressed to call that offering a MMORPG in the first place.

From my experience the first sign of poor argument is resorting to pedantry.

Which is? simple the mmorpg crowd do not want a standalone PvP game. More imporantly those games do not have a chance at succeeding in the era of MOBAs.

It should be apparent from the comments that a lot of these suggestions are ignoring the business aspect. They ignore the fact that making PvP f2p devalues the game. They are ignoring a lot of important variables, so I wouldn’t argue too much with the people here.

People who play F2P games, like Heroes of the Storm, or League of Legends spend money on skins/unlocking champions. These games both have a steady revenue stream (potentially more than GW2).

GW2 could easily open up a subset of of the trait lines for a F2P PvP-only game client and require that the rest be unlocked through gold purchases (which can be bought with cash —> gems, or earned slowly from pvping). This would be no different than how they are currently locking amulets amulets and requiring people to unlock them with gold. This is equivalent to unlocking champions in HotS and LoL.

Secondly, the cash shop already offers a ton of skins and outfits for cash purchase, much like the other games mentioned.

Anet is NOT new to offering PvP-only access for Guild Wars. I would love to see at least this part be made available to increase the pvp player base.

LoL has Tencent one of the biggest chinese gaming company. They can dedicate the resources. The other one is owned by Blizzard, which also has money pit. Dota2 has the valve.

The fact of the matter is:
1. f2p pvp only MMORPG do not exist for a reason.
2. Arena net does not have the resources to be able to split focus. As a matter of fact, having a PvP only game is probably outside their core competency. (this is very important).
3. They can barely handle the current guild wars 2, even when all their focus is on PvE. What means you they can handle two separate system, which is what will happen. Arena net can’t kitten it, because that will further destroy their brand.
4. Unnecessary risk.
5. Arena net cannot compete against LoL or Dota 2 or that other game.

The point being, asking for stuff is easy. None of you guys seem to have the basic business training to understand why it will never happen.

WoW handles this much much better. All skill that are interrupts, are instant cast with no exceptions. All skills that are succeptible to be interrupted have a casting time of 1.5s or longer again, no exceptions.

Added to it, you have much cleaner animations, less particles and cast bars and it does normalize the fight quite a bit. I wish such things were implemented here.

WOW isn’t a action game or a hybrid, so ping is not a big deal.

Well only because I as a boy started to play video games when the first commodore come out, and she as a girl started a few years ago, and never truly got into it. You don’t need to buy heroes or anything in DotA and F2P still works perfectly fine. As a matter of fact i’m pretty sure 90% of the real money transaction are done in order to buy skins and not champions in LoL. And to answer the fears about community, as someone who plays both, GW2 community (in PvP) is not that much better than LoL.

You are completely wrong. F2P would bring in more players which is what we need. ANET could make money then through:

1. Heroes sales for stronghold
2. Upgrades to buy the elite specs
3. Boosters
4. Custom Arena rooms

Everyone wins.

More players are not inheriently beneficial IF there isn’t a good way to monetize the game to support the increase population.

All those things you listed are not enough to sustain the game.
1. Booster what would you be boosting that makes it worthwhile? have you wondered why they decided to change booster this last patch? Not even PvEer bother with it and they have a lot of reasons to.
2. Upgrade to elite spec, that could work but that is a one time purchase unless they constantly release new ones, which I doubt they could pull it off. Let’s not forget that doing this removes a very critical reason why people should buy the expansion aka it kittenes off the largest base in the game PvEer. Totally worth it, right.
3. Heroes, you don’t really need heroes to play strong hold, you could find a friend that has it. The heroes are not even game changing or critical.
4. Custom Arenas could work.

All those things you listed are things that could be monetize but none of them are things are attractive enough to push players into buying it. Also all your points assume that players would want to leave whatever current MOBA to play guild wars 2. You have no numbers of back up your claims, either.

In any case, at this stage of the game converting PvP to f2p is not a worthwhile venture. It takes a lot of work to make proper cash shop items, change system but more importantly it splits resources far too much. I can see why it looks attractive to you, to make guild wars 2 f2p more players good. But like a terrible lot ideas on this forum (non balance related), they hand wave the business aspect of suggestions thinking it is easy to pull off. It is not.

in theory open world PvP could work like in blade and soul. The game doesn’t have BUT if you wear an opposing faction’s clothing or costume it flags you for PvP until you turn it remove the outfit which is just as easy.

The question for Arena net is why would they do that. Adding that type of PvP into the game introduces certain elements or bad apples like the OP. The type of people it attract and the number of people it could hurt generally doesn’t make it worthwhile. Also the number of PvP purist who care about that feature are so insignificant that appealing to them isn’t worth the destruction of the community or even the time resources.

OP if you want open world PvP wait for blade and soul. Guild wars 2 will never make you happy because what you want is incompatible with the game’s core beliefs.

it should not come as a shock to any of you when you see a player with 10% winrate walking around with that PvP exclusive legendary backpiece.

I’m fine with this, skins and such should be earn able by anyone who puts in the effort, it’s a PvP exclusive because you need to do PvP to get it. Give leaderboards/titles/badges to those who care about win rates.

PvE legendaries also don’t require skill, just playing enough.

I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with a skin being awarded just for putting time to grind, IF (seriously don’t just stop reading after 1st clause) and only IF lboards & badges showed skill and not grind to acquire.

I couldn’t care less about a legendary backpiece.

Unless it was a really nice looking cape hint hint, anet pls.

You are not the first person to ask for capes. Arena net isn’t adding capes because they think it is a bad idea, they probably want it more than you guys since they can monetize it and score easy short term points. The issue with cape seems to do with the havoc and how it will interact with weapons and our model.

They recently change the rule which makes whatever waiting all night pointless. You will never EVER play with your friends unless your friend move to a lower pop WvW server.

A quick message to all: I saw this post yesterday and laughed my kitten off briefly, before signing up to Metabattle to rate the celestial signet build. Took me 2 minutes. I gave it a ‘Bad’ for obvious reasons. You can do the same.
The build has been voted on 13 times. 13. 13 people decided this was ‘meta’? Until more people start using that website it is going to be the joke of the sPvP community. Do your profession a solid, sign up and rate that kittene.

There is no point in making it f2p. There are very few ways to monetize MMORPG PvP games to make it worthwhile to f2p. Mobas can be f2p because you need to buy heroes, MMORPG however do not have that benefit and thus does not make it worthwhile.

Finally, how many people will give up LoL to come play guild wars 2. The point being making it f2p is a waste of money and resources.

It is easy to ask for things OP when you don’t have to think about the logistics and the difficulty it is to convert a game to f2p and still find ways to generate income without making it too causing a backlash.

Can you list more than 2 f2p PvP mmorpg ONLY games?
