Its open world pvp. It is not nor should be spvp. You are expected to put time into your character for excellent gear and build.
Gear and build yes, profession mechanic no. Necro’s aren’t expected to run to 25 different maps to unlock death shroud skills. This would be a nice QoL improvement for WvW rangers, especially for the players with multiple rangers.
Because it has an evade in it. It is insanely defensive, GS is a defensive weapon on all but 1 skill.
Yeah but it’s not an on demand evade. I don’t feel like that really justifies the low damage anymore, not with the power creep that has been added to the game.
Anet, I want to lvl from 2 to 80 in wvw but I want all my skills. Can you just give them to me for entering wvw. And traits to please.
So…. like it works in PvP? I agree, that would be a lot better than having a bunch of uplevels running around acting like rally bait.
Although it would take away the fun of leveling a ranger just for the purpose of killing people 1vX as an uplevelel.
I think he means WvW is the only area where everyone can get new pets, if they are available to people who didn’t buy HoT (since they can’t go into the jungle.) I could see the new pets being capped in the new BL.
If that’s a problem they could just activate all pets in WvW like they do in PvP.
PvE players can still RP as pokemon trainers and run around catching them on the PvE maps if they like.
Or you could suck it up and run once into hot to cap a pet on a ranger or two. Its not like it’s going to be gated behind mordremoth completion and mastery tracks.
I play norn, OMG I got to go to asura land for jaguar! The humanity!
Or you could not be an kitten . Thanks for stopping by.
It’s to make up for the fact that rangers are the only class that can have their profession mechanic shut down for 60 seconds by an opposing player.
With respect, jana, you answered a different question; we were doing what you were suggesting.
The question I actually asked was, how does a trapper thief kill 4 or 5 PC’s, given parity in player skill and equipment? What do they equip? What skills do they use? How do they sequence them?
That should highlight either what’s broken, or how to counter it.
AoE skills, every class has them, use them. Dodge, also every class is able to do that, cleanse condis, yet again every class can do that.
In short: Think (not everybody can do that)
Yeah guys, just aoe down the full dire thief. It’s not like you are guessing his location since he has super speed or teleports to escape and reset the fight while fully stealthed…
I think he means WvW is the only area where everyone can get new pets, if they are available to people who didn’t buy HoT (since they can’t go into the jungle.) I could see the new pets being capped in the new BL.

Ok, but the point is, that he wants to tame pets in wvw, too. I love PvE, but why not? It would be cool for wvw-only players.
I don’t know if these pets are core or HoT only. If the are core pets then the only place to cap them would be wvw. It’s the same scenario only reversed.
You seem to be imposing some weird rule on this scenario that doesn’t need to be there at all.
I think it’s free to test them all lol. The more I think about the WHaO fix and the addition of trapper runes the more I want to try the build I posted above with cele amulet.
We all transferred to another server. Didn’t like having to do that but would rather play together. ANet has a legendary game but the devs/marketing go out of their way to make it a crappy experience sometimes.
Also Full servers to my knowledge never open up. The tiers seem to be locked.
-they can create a free alt account on your server to join you
I believe Full servers do not allow new players. Could be wrong on that.
I said they could create accounts to join him (assuming he is on a server that isn’t full)
This is why you should never pre order.
Ways to play with your friends-
-they can transfer to an open server to join you
-they can create a free alt account on your server to join you
Also if you play smart you really aren’t hard countered by signet necro’s. Run in, hit them with a cc/condi bomb and then run out of their LoS. Most signet necro’s don’t have any way to cleanse other than to transfer the condi’s, bomb them, run away and come back to stomp them. This will be even easier with super speed from trapper runes.
In a few days you will be able to use trapper runes which will really help you out. If you want to go full burst, sinister will also be available.
Now that they are fixing WHaO you might also consider running that over healing spring to take advantage of the might from sword and axe auto attacks. If you do that you’ll want to think about adding a bit of condi removal somewhere.
I’m considering trying this with sinister and trapper http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQRAsf3YjUqQ7KWuCmsAVLGYEq/JW9WujgaNE4C4yDgS2VBA-TJRHwAQLDQ+kAA4JAEa/BA
Edit: I’ll probably try it out with smoke skale in place of one of the birds as well. If it’s not great I might run dog for the immob.

Someone told me it was an alpine wolf. I didn’t even realize different races got difference starting pets since I’ve only ever made human rangers. :O
They’ve got that now but I’m pretty sure they used to have the regular wolf, I think the starter pets were changed around a couple years ago.
Norn starter pets options have been Raven, Snow Leopard and Alpine Wolf since the earliest of betas lol they never got changed (except Humans who had Juvenile Jungle Stalker, replaced by River Drake)
The only place to get a Black Wolf is in EB

I might be alone by saying this, but please do not change the way it works. While I agree that it’s a little wonky when learning how to use it, I also believe it’s very rewarding once you get the hang of it and know how/when to use it. It has its own niche and I enjoy its play style very much.
So please, do not change it.
- A 1800+Hr Ranger Vet
+1 for sure. This thing is so good at doing what it’s designed for.
For those who feel like there’s something to ‘work around’, you should probably be using greatsword or Axe.
Neither if which are a main hand melee weapon…
Someone told me it was an alpine wolf. I didn’t even realize different races got difference starting pets since I’ve only ever made human rangers. :O
They’ve got that now but I’m pretty sure they used to have the regular wolf, I think the starter pets were changed around a couple years ago.
Every pet that can currently be found in WvW is also on the PvE maps, the new ones can work the same way.
I’m pretty sure wolves are only in WvW?
Am I crazy or weren’t you able to get it in the norn starting area (or possibly as a starter pet) when the game released? It’s been a few years but I’m almost positive my norn ranger had one from the get go.
But then core pve players would be forced into wvw for the pets.
I’m pretty sure this is sarcasm but I feel the need to respond before someone latches on to this argument….
Every pet that can currently be found in WvW is also on the PvE maps, the new ones can work the same way.
Or they can just use the second suggestion and unlock all pets in WvW since it is a PvP game mode.
I’m a PvP and WvW player, and frankly I hate having to do a scavenger hunt in the PvE maps to have full access to my profession mechanic. I especially hate that pets are character bound instead of account bound meaning I have to make the run for them multiple times.
Will any of the new or old pets be included in the new WvW desert bl map? Could you just unlock all pets in WvW the same way you do in PvP?
Did they state somewhere, that pets not working in pvp was intended?
And of course i’m only talking about BWE3, since we don’t know, if/how the pets will change. But yes, i think (well, at least hope), they will nerf the smokescale. And then hopefully change/buff all those useless pets …
There’s a magic word called “logic”
If developers notice pet doesn’t work, they would have patch it asap since it’s not a difficult fix. They didn’t do so even when they clearly aware the issue, showing they didn’t intend to let you use them in PVP because they know some pets are over-toned.
We can always use our brain to figure things out. We don’t have to wait for Anet to say this, say that to know the data and how each skills/mechanic work. It’s not hard to notice Smokescale is stronger than every single pet in the game by a huge margin during BWE3
What makes you think the pets not being in PvP for the BWE was intended? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was just a bug and they didn’t bother fixing it right away because it wasn’t a bug that benefited rangers. There are still a ton of people dealing with the bug that doesn’t let them activate a pet in the heart of the mists.
Now that the technology is in place you need to add it to WvW and PvP and just change the damage reduction to 50% for those game modes (possibly higher for WvW).
I just want to clarify that this should only be for ranger pets, things like spirits and turrets should rely on smart positioning. We don’t want someone bunkering a point with a bunch of spirits that you have to target one by one.
More than anything pets need a reduction in the amount of condi damage they can take since they are slow to respond and they run in and out of fire rings and other condi fields.
I think you can kind of boil down the discussion to a simple yes or no to a very simple question.
Should you ever be able to kill someone without ever leaving stealth or any indicators you were there?
Counterquestion: There’s enough classes who are basically invulnerable throughout the fight – should that be?
show me a class that can keep up permanent invulnerability
Now that the technology is in place you need to add it to WvW and PvP and just change the damage reduction to 50% for those game modes (possibly higher for WvW).
I tried a pure chill build some weeks ago, sadly it wasn’t as epic as I expected it to be. Most of the time I was hugging the ice cold ground.
Yeah I’ve given it a try. I also added in food that chills on crit, but it didn’t end up being very effective.
I enjoyed the match up until T2 fell apart and you had a bunch of players move down that screwed up the fights. Roaming really went to crap after that.
T2 guilds are leaving (most have already left) and headed back so they can “raid against each other”; even though none of them really raid for more than an hour. Like you I am hoping the roaming gets back to what it was, but really the problem now is the guilds that are running 50+ man map blobs while pulling 12+ hr days. Once that kitten starts it is hard to break because pugs start begging for that ktrain on a daily basis.
Oh well, we will see what HoT brings, I have a feeling it will be the end for a lot of old school WvW’ers.
Blobs are going to do what blobs are going to do. I was just upset because before the collapse I could often get some great 1v1’s or small group fights without some large group jumping in to ruin the fight. People would stand off to the side watching the fight and then challenge the winners.
That has pretty much disappeared and now you will have 15+ man groups with venom share chasing solo roamers or 2-3 man groups halfway across the map
I enjoyed the match up until T2 fell apart and you had a bunch of players move down that screwed up the fights. Roaming really went to crap after that.
I hate to break to the random Mag OP, but we locked this matchup in on purpose…And it was done well before the fight guilds xferred down to T3. It was done with the help of SBI in the beginning as well, and included sending guilds toward SBI instead of Maguuma at the early stages. This was all done to avoid the kittenshow going on in T2.
For every person saying “stale matchup” there were 30 saying “lock the tier”. TBH no one from Mag is playing right now until HoT, and they really haven’t been for about 3 weeks. It just so happens that SBI’s Korean contingent have decided to pull 12+ hour days playing a (even more than normal) meaningless matchup. That has added to the random pugs frustration I would guess.
Also no guilds (of note) took any time off “hoping that one of the other servers would move out”; they took time off 1st to help lock the tier and prevent anyone from slipping into T2, and 2nd (lately) because WvW really doesn’t matter with HoT right around the corner.
Well to be fair it isnt just our koreans. In NA prime time Mag is usually the only server in the group without a real group running. I mean when CD is fielding more players then you, then break status achieved! Heck we tried doing a guild run last night with 15 people. On mag bl we took bay 2 towers and citadel. Just hoping some sort of force would show up to defend or fight. How many mag showed up? 2. 1 of which was afk in the citadel. We messed around for another 15 minutes then gave up.
No biggie like you said wvw doesnt matter now (if it ever does) so it is all good. Just a bit boring. Not many guilds are really running so the blob war is in full effect!
Wait…. you took their citadel? Sorry I missed out on that.
Depends what you are trying to do, roam, skirmish or run with a zerg.
This is my go to roaming set up http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRnUqA9CilsAusActgBGh6fiSol5w9bDgec3gQ4gVJeA-TFDEABLqOie6AuUlACeAAbpE0gLBATKzmUFjmUa0mmgk2fAgjAAhAENGA-w
For solo or small group stuff the extra vitality will come in a lot handier than toughness. You might also want to consider working some more mobility into your build, rangers generate a lot of hate and you will have large groups trying to chase you down.
I honestly find vit and other defensive stats as a waste in WvW zerg mainly because proper positioning and you will never have a need for them.
I absolutely agree. That’s why I said that’s my go to roaming set. With all the condi roamers you will run into the extra vitality helps a lot, not to mention how fast I can clear condi’s with my build.
Compare the stats on my build vs. the full zerk one you posted. The damage loss is negligible (actually quickdraw might give me the better dps) but the survivability is much higher for small scale fighting.
Yours is better for zerging where you will have help with condi clears, can avoid direct damage with SoS /positioning, and you can light people up with those piercing arrows.
Not sure why you would use predator’ instinct over the other options though.
Depends what you are trying to do, roam, skirmish or run with a zerg.

Show me one instance of Anet delivering something the WvW community has asked for. And no, fixing achievements so they don’t take a minimum 12 years to complete (3 years after launch) doesn’t count.
- They removed culling, which was a major change.
- They adjusted fov after people complained that some players had three-screen setups that gave them an advantage
- They changed siege despawn from 30 minutes to one hour
- They removed the quaggans because they were buggy and affected the entire map
- They added bloodlust to replace the quaggans because players asked for PPK effects.
- They worked to fix the issues from allowing fov with siege, and are still in progress of actively finding a solution.
There`s more, but those are a few of the requested things that have transpired.
Bringing back culling in the form of the SM stealth fountain. Now only the winning server gets to benefit from it.
Instead of fixing the way players interact with siege to prevent people from exploiting, they let everyone abuse the game mechanic leading to even more problems that they still haven’t fixed.
“Temporarily” removed the orb to figure out a way to stop hackers from abusing it….. added bloodlust ruins because that was less work than dealing with the hackers.
Hmmm on this note, what do you guys think of thief viability in stronghold?
I think with the addition of trapper runes thieves will be pretty strong on defense.
If they don’t add some direct damage to a couple of the traps they will be completely broken on offence since they can run that bullkitten ghost thief build and kill the lord without ever revealing themselves.
I would love the option to turn off boons you cant affect. Like guard stacks, hero banners, food, utility. If i cant affect it i dont care about it to much.
You would willingly choose not to have a visual indicator telling you if the other player is running power, condi, or some tanky zerg spec?
I have no problem at all seeing the buff icon. Paying attention to your enemies boons is pretty much PvP 101.
I would like to see warriors get a indicator on their bar to let them and their opponents know when last stand is ready. It’s very annoying to try and cc them and give them 5 stacks of stability instead.
Burn guards are super easy to counter and outlast if you’re properly traited and set up to deal with it. If you’re not, you melt almost instantly. There’s no middle-ground so I think that’s why this particular setup creates so much controversy.
Burn guard is basically 100b + quickness + bull rush warrior from GW2 launch (before 100b and quickness were severely beaten with the nerf stick) — it destroys unprepared people and gets laughed at by others. Overall, it’s not good for the game since it results in arguments on the forums and in-game.
If a build is creating toxicity among the player base, it needs to be looked at. This includes all other builds that create a lot of toxicity among players. Anet has been good about fixing such builds in the past, such as 100 nade engi, 100b warrior, S/D evade spam thief, etc. Every one of the previously toxic builds had people that defended them and said they were balanced. They might have been, but they created toxic arguments everywhere and made PvP a terrible place to play.
Every time one of those builds was nerfed the same qq’ers would focus on something else to cry about.
You said it yourself, the build is easily countered. Nerfing something because certain people would rather cry than adapt isn’t a good way to balance a game. Builds should only be nerfed when they are legitimately over powered.
Bountiful Hunter would just be flat out better in this build.
depends on how selfish you want to be. Allies aid with quickness is pretty amazing.
Flat out better than Instinctive Reaction, which is what OP’s build is using. He gains nothing from that trait except three seconds of random quickness here and there, compared to a permanent 2-5 % damage boost.
Allies’ Aid is the obvious support option.
Yup, you won’t get an argument from me on that one.
Bountiful Hunter would just be flat out better in this build.
depends on how selfish you want to be. Allies aid with quickness is pretty amazing.
Longer queues usually equal terrible games for me. However, now they are all terrible.
I think something changed in the last week. My queue has been popping in about 30s and I am ending up being teamed with newer players most of the time. Not sure what happened, I think something got messed up recently.
Call of the mists buff brought in a bunch of PvE players
Right – read your posts again kitten . You claim thieves should “run away to drop traps away from anyone in order to stay in stealth”.
Then when I point out that you’re now saying thieves should use an offensive weapon only to ‘stay in stealth’ which is fricken dumb as they’ve far better alternatives which won’t risk revealing them.
Right, please show me where I said that the only way you should use traps is defensively. I pointed out you still can use them defensively as long as you aren’t a complete idiot and think about where you are placing them. You might have a problem with that, most won’t.
This in no way means you can’t still use them offensively, it just means there is some risk in using them. You use them when you want the cc instead of rotating through them to keep up perma stealth.
Now you’re saying “But you don’t drop shadow refuge infront of your enemy” – so how are you going to “run away somewhere to drop a trap where it won’t be triggered”. Are you going to MAGIC your way? Or are you going to drop one of those traps that’ll fricken REVEAL you to ‘sneak away in stealth’. Or are you going to tootle pip run over behind something, in full view, and drop a trap to stealth up… at which point your enemy just keeps running to the last point they saw you and instantly reveals you. That’s really intelligent is it not (seriously Anet – if I put an apostrophed version of the is it not – it’s censored? Crikey).
“MAGIC your way”….. Have you ever actually played a thief? Thieves have the best mobility in game and the easiest access to stealth. Most people will have no problem disengaging to a safe distance using their weapon skills if they are in trouble. At that point a trapper thief can either use the stealth and super speed to escape, or maintain stealth while letting health and initiative regen.
Say what you will, all you come off as is a burning build trying to defend cheese.
Lose the argument in Logic, resort to personal attacks over the internet. You the man.
GG
yes, running generosity.
I actually got “Hit” 5 times… that went to 8o k burning?
Say what you will, all you come off as is a burning build trying to defend cheese.
So no trooper runes? You have 3 shouts and you are fully relying on a sigil to clear your condi’s and you are upset that a condi build beat you? And if you aren’t running trooper runes why the heck would you use “Protect Me” over SoS? You are already running marksmanship and another signet so picking up Brutish Seals would make sense for your build. Plus “Protect Me” prevents you from contesting a point, and running it with a bird is just kind of stupid.
As for me running a burn build or trying to “defend cheese”, you are more than welcome to check my post history. You’ll find it’s pretty clear that I main a power ranger. I absolutely wreck burn guards because they are a 1 trick pony that are easily countered. Frankly I am a little embarrassed to see a ranger complaining about them when you have so many tools available for dealing with them.
(edited by Puck.9612)
I have almost exactly the same build but I was trying a more defensive version with trooper runes and in games with lots of condi I also took evasive purity over windborne I feel it works very well.
You might like something closer to what I posted for WvW roaming when they first changed WHaO. http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRnUqA9CilsAusActghMhyT8Eox/aYBm4OZDgD4gVJeA-TFDEABLqOie6AuUlACeAAbpE0gLBATKzmUFjmUa0mmgk2fAgjAAhAMvAA-w
I probably will end up swapping NM for skirmishing in WvW. NM is great in PvP where you have to fight over a point, but quickdraw is just so much better in WvW.
You’ve got 3 shouts on your bar, were you running trooper runes or a generosity sigil? Or were you just going full yolo and complaining that someone had the audacity to hit you?
(edited by Puck.9612)
Honestly, sword/wh provides very little pressure even with 25 stacks of might. You lack a block, any type of escape or gap closer and 0 cc on that weapon set. I’d rather have GS with 0 stacks. You also only have 2 condi clears here, which means you will get rekt really fast by anyone with condi damage (basically any ele, engi, necro or guard these days).
2 is fine, if you need more than that throw on a generosity sigil.
Pretty close to what I’m already running. I’ll definitely be running something similar
Why not move reset to monday?
Patches are usually on tuesday so you have all week to fix problems.
The last couple days of a match are usually pretty dead but since most people have more time on the weekends we might start seeing some good action and last minute comebacks.
It doesn’t split the weekend.
If there is a problem with reset we don’t have to wait all weekend for an anet employee to discovery it/anet employees aren’t spending their weekends at work.
During unbalanced match ups the weekend is usually when 1 server takes a huge lead and the fairweathers from the other servers give up for the week. Putting the weekend at the end of the match might help it remain competitive a little longer.
I’m sure this doesn’t apply to everyone but friday/saturday are traditionally date nights or days to go out with friends. Switching to monday might help improve some peoples social lives.
I’ve said my piece, go ahead and flame away at how this is the worst idea ever and it will destroy WvW.
(edited by Puck.9612)
p/p thieves are more or less useless, if you want this playstyle use a ranger, its much better. Everything is working against thieves. I didnt complain about the thief state much, i most times disagread on the thief is dead stuff, but this is just stupid.
maybe so. p/p is useless cause of no escape utilities or evade skill and no stealth abilities
maybe the stealth and dash will bring it back
ranger cannot burst like p/p thief. sure he can block and disengage better but this gonna change in few days .. we shall see…
also this is the reason anet state they gonna rework on the p/p . cause no one is using it atm.
Funny thing is there were a lot of people using it before they cut ricochet because it “hurt the purity of the pistol”. Sure it was never going to be a tournament level build but it was something a lot of people liked to mess around with.
Well it’s about time. Thank that ele for me.
you could still use your weapon skills to disengage and stealth, and then move to a safe spot to drop traps where no one will trigger them.
Are you reading your posts… why would you run away in stealth to drop traps in stealth where no-one will trigger them – utter ridiculous insanity.
…..To remain in stealth without spending a bunch of initiative. Do you drop your shadow refuge directly in front of an enemy that has the ability to aoe bomb the crap out of it or knock you out with a cc, or do you try to get to get to a relatively safe spot to drop it?
Since the discussion seems to be over your head let me break it down for you Barney style.
Perma stealth with indicators that takes all of a thief’s initiative to keep up and is no threat to anyone= fine.
Perma stealth with a bunch of CC and condi damage that easily kills other players= broken
Best way to fix this= add direct damage to needle trap and tripwire
