Suggesting minimun 2600 armor kills light/medium armor builds since they have to heavily invest in toughness gear and tougness trait tree. An elementalist has base 1800 armor at 80 in full exotics. To get to 2600, gear and trinkets have to have toughness, as well as 30 points into earth magic trait line!
I took the base reference 2600 , since is the reference for skill coeficient calculations
On my build i managed to keep 2600 armor ( medium armor ) 16000 +hp and 114 critical damage , only with an lose on Power
2 banner warriors ( hammer //rifle )
4 shout warriors ( hammer // sword /axe)
4 guardians (fully support all )
2 necros
2 thieves (Shortbow)
2 eng (grenades /bombs)
3 elementalists ( 2 staf / 1 CC)
1 mesmer
no rangers, too much skills fully block projectiles:)
Critical Chance and Precision is found by the following formula:
Critical Chance = round down((precision – 822) / 21)
let’s say you use P/T/V chest /legs / helment
this add you : 45 power + 32 thoug + 32 vit // 101 power + 72 thoug 72 vit // 67 pow 48 thoug +48 vit.
Total : 213 power // 152 thoug // 152 vit
with this 3 pieces knight – + 60 armor // -60 power
-152 vitality + 152 precision
152 precision is arround 7.4 % critical rate
i would trade some PTV armors for knight.
you will lose few p attack and gain some armor.
And you can trade 200 vitaility (2000 hp ) for 200 precision ( 9-10% critical chance )
See what the true question should be, is how to counter a thief, as a thief. Two stealth thieves makes for a very on edge and nail biting fight
backstab /lotus strike /double strike /wild strike icon , changes when you hit enemy , even stealthed ( add to this devourer vennom /panic strike-trait ) when you see the first auto attack icon changes use cloack and dager and backstab. and you kill the enemy thief stealthed.
Burst:
– Thoughness
– Stun-breakerPermastealth:
– Block
– Blind
– AoE
– CCNow stop complaining about it.
Realy, I’m tired of seeing people who don’t know the class complaining in the foruns and asking for nerfs.Everyone has a stunbreaker and can be built with toughness so let’s look at the other list.
Ranger:
- Block – only on greatsword and it lasts 3 seconds while thief stealth lasts 4 seconds.
- Blind – only from pets (or sun spirit, lol), culling makes this difficult, and a thief can drop blind by auto-attacking air … which doesn’t break stealth
- AOE – traps, torch #5, and longbow #5. Could factor in melee attacks from sword/greatsword I guess.
- CC – Here we go … Ranger has a lot from both pets and weapons as well as 2 traps for this.
Summary:
You can see why the most common advice for Ranger vs Thief is “use traps”.
Mesmer:
- Block – Distortion (shatter and blurred frenzy), Scepter #2, OH Sword #4
- Blind – Scepter #2 (2nd activation), Glamours (traited), Torch #4, Chaos Armor (random)
- AoE – Shatters (not great vs stealth), Chaos Storm, Greatsword #3 … others aren’t great vs a stealth opponent and even the above aren’t wonderful … could include sword attacks
- CC – Daze (shatter), Daze OH Sword #4 (2nd activation), Pistol #5, Greatsword #5, Sword #3, etc. Plenty here.
Obvious why you don’t see Mesmers complain as much about Thieves as Rangers.
Those are the two I mainly play right now, so I’ll stop there and let others, if they want, do it for other classes.
I would like to add that Mesmer and Ranger suffer from an annoyance when fighting a stealthing Thief in that both class’s mechanic (Mesmer Illusions and Ranger pets) provide trivially easy targets for Thieves to land Cloak & Dagger on for stealth. It’s an example of where two classes are penalized by their mechanic with fighting against Thief with OH Dagger.
Actualy regarding mesmers , i usualy own Sword /… mesmer, with my thief, but 1 week ago i made an duel vs condition mesmer (with staff ) . His attacks bounced me in stealth and the conditions did not allowed me to trade backstab for 3 seconds revealed. At first backstab i lost 10k hp , and i was forced to retreat on range, where i lost the duel.

if 13k hp and 3000 armor lose 80% of hp against initial burst, use heal skill for 6000 hp he can fight back with 80% of his HP
if 20k hp and 2000 armor lose 80% of hp against initial burst, use heal skill for 6000 hp he will be at 40% hp , he cannot fight back.
So personaly i sugest at least 2600 armor in wvwvw , before stack vitality

At first, I thought it would be perma-stealth thief zergs roaming the map at 50% move speed stealthed and dropping tons of poison arrows, knockdown traps, and caltrops on the other zergs (which as you may know do no damage directly so they can stay in stealth forever.)
But I realized the new fad today: Necros. I know, what the heck right? But hear me out.
Necro+6(or more pets) running minion builds.
Your 100 man zerg just became 700 man zerg. Any time you ran close to an enemy zerg they would just lag nonstop. Plus all those AOES and stuff they won’t get to try because they are too lagged anyway? limit of 5 players per aoe so you’ve got a good chance of no players even getting hit.
Hahha perma stealth thief zerg countered by 1 hammer warrior party.
necro minions countered by staf elementarists.
i use an 0/30/30/10/0 , it works decent for fractals is not the best.
The best utility’s i found for fractals are :
blinding powder ( good panic buton, 1 aoe stealth /blind / heal )
shadow refuge ( better area heal , dark field -lifesteal from projectiles /whirl)
smoke screen ( absorb projectiles , smoke field -blindness with projectiles)
shadow step ( i only use it for jade maw fractal , is good to pick crystals and return safe, or break stun to dodge jade’s attack)
Good Traits : Shadow protector , shadow embrace , vigorous recovery, critical haste, executioner.
Bad common traits :
fleet shadow -very situational
furious retailation – 10 sec furry for 2-5 minutes champion is poor
infusion of shadows and patience – you won’t spam C&D, and you can provide more suport to your team with other traits
i will point here few AOE regenerations from thief
Shadow refuge – 4 seconds `~ 1700 heal
Shadow protector (Trait) 5 seconds regeneration for ally’s every times you stealth them
you can stealth them every 48 seconds with shadow refuge and every 32 seconds with blinding powder
ShortboW – cluster bomb – initiative cost -3 – blast finisher

Key game content can also be designed that is bad for thieves. Anything more demanding than the fractal jellyfish could show thieves to be very weak underwater. In fact, underwater thieving is not where it should be.
that is true. thieves utility’s are very limited underwater . you can not use traps /deceptions.

To be honest i am happy with shortbow atm.
It has the best blast finisher ingame. If you combo cluster with water /fire /smoke fields ,might even look grossly overpowered. (area heal /area might/area stealth)
for venoms i think a minor passive buff would be great.
An example: Basilisk Venom: Passive: Every 10 attacks you stun a foe for 1 second
Active: Instantly Stun for for 1.5 seconds
Ice Drake Venom: Passive: Every 10 attacks you recover from a condition
Active: Chilled for 1 second.I think making them more like signets would give venoms more use, but plz idrc what you do with the venoms, just make them more practical, it feels like every thief build has to be a cookie cutter, and im a player who likes diversity, and feeling awesome with my unique builds.

I’m a Thief and agree it is not balanced however if burst is toned down then something else needs to be buffed because that’s our main survival, to dps or to die.
you can fix that from your traits and armors, if you decide to go for full glas cannon you can output high dps. If you go for tanky build you will backstab for 4 k and survive other’s bursts
yes it is normal , since you can mentain regeneration almost non stop
you got heals /boons / on weapon skills
you got 2 invulnerability skills /1 teleport
your spells have area of effect target, so you don’t have to target the thief to chill /burn /cripple /knock him down/dps him
But you have might chosen wrong clas OP, elementalist is not easy to play , you must time /combo your skills

I’ve noticed that shortbow is good counter since you can avoid sneak attack with your 3 and harras them by dropping clusters in front of you.
However on my tanky build 0/30/30/10/0, i lack the burst to finish them . Had few attempts with thieves guide +shortbow imobilize 2 heartseekers then steal +backstab, but with this combo i take only the mediocre ones. Against good ones it usualy ends as a draw after 15-20 minutes, since they cannot kill me neither.
Sword is good counter against P/D since infiltration strike allow you to perma harras and constant condition removal

But WvW isn’t about duel and you really need a weapon set that allows you to be flexible. P/P isn’t that.

thief is more for solo players
the utility you provide is poor compared to other classes , and in high lvl sPvP or wvwvw you might not be able to finish the oponent you get downed.
As well 8 k damage every few seconds in mas pvp will be poor compared to constant 1000 – 4000x 5 targets
Pistol /Pistol is only good vs champions without minions in PvE
in PVP can be countered to easy
in Pve ,in general aoe is supperior
Removing downed state would favour glass cannon builds with burst damage. There is already too much burst damage in the game.

Thieves are made to be most mobile clas in game. They got burst they got mobility.
Same way like mesmers got burst and clones +utility and guardians got defence +healing +utility … that’s 1 of the thieves specific .
In the case of heartseeker spam.
Why not just make the skill only usable on a target (afterall, mid air doesn’t have a heart to aim at).
And when target is out of range, your skill fails, no leap and you loose your 3 initiative.
Thieves would actually have to check their range then if they don’t want to burn ini for nothing. And getting yourself out of range fast enough would seriously screw up a HS spammer for that reason as hed be left with no ini.

thieves are newb friendly , cause random wvwwv pvps where , even if they got poor play style they can do 1 hit and get credit for kill , and escape with stealth.
However when you find 1-2-3 newbie theives you will have no problem to counter them with classic bull charge /frenzy/100 blades , or spawn 2 clones dodge roll for 3’rd and burst.
Since the most complains regarding thieves comes from wvwvw, i will tell you what happens over there. 2-3 thieves (full glas 12k hp / 1900 defence) hide and zerg 1 poor guy. If there are 2 roamers warriors /guardians /elementarists , thieves go back on the conner .

Guardians do not have more mobility , they have ability to chase. They also have vigor on critical , wich makes them able to dodge as much as thieves( just for your information, since it looks like, you do not know very much regarding other classes)

Stop acting like spoiled brats. Ele’s RTL got nerfed, rush is on 20 second CD. Hey, you have other weapon sets too, why not switch? Oh, because you won’t hurt them enough when you catch them.
The choice should be yours. These utilities aren’t optimal for your build? Don’t take them, but struggle to catch the two classes with better mobility than you. If you want to be on top, learn to make sacrifices.

I belive your build is good in zerg vs zerg but vs roamers you got low chance with this build
HS is fine and balanced. It’s been nerfed enough in the past and is where it should be ini/damage wise. On top of that, there are PLENTY of counters to some one HS spamming. Cripple/chill/blowout/teleports/stealth/protection/immobilize/evade can all be used to stop a HS spammer. Pretty much the only thing a player can’t do is sit there like grazing cattle.
It is not balanced. It does way too much, and costs way too little. And it’s not all regarding spammers. Getting nailed with 1000’s of damage in a mug>cnd>bs combo and then having to contend with someone’s massive leap that will hit for another couple thousand is cheap.
It incentivizes poor gameplay, and people like you not willing to accept culpability are bringing the crybabies calling for a nerf that will essentially ruin everyone but you.
Heart seeker is a stupid skill. It needs toned down, not in damage but in breadth. Any thief worth his salt doesn’t need a 450 range leap to catch his target.
Fixes that will stop QQ:
Heart seeker original damage ratios restored, range reduced to 300 and cost increased to 4 initiative.Choking gas has a very small AoE damage component, so it cannot be spammed mid-zerg in stealth.
Caltrops break stealth on deployment.
Sneak attack requires positioning from rear to trigger bleeds, in line with every other stealth attack. (Face it, nothing sneaky about your opponent firing shots right in front of you. Perhaps a cripple on frontal would be more appropriate.)
Revealed on de stealth, no matter what.

Shortbow from range imobilize , i even burn my refuge to imobilize and haras , he will switch to water to clean. When he switch back to fire i use hide in shadows /backstab -2 -3 heartseekers then steal +CnD
If he is not an bunker he will die, If he is bunker he cannot harm me to much untill i have utility’s reused and will become endless 1 vs 1

Is an build without condition removal except hide in shadows and 1 stun breaker.
Against an Engi i lost half hp from retailation.
It is an reason why we have few viable builds already.
D/D -glas cannon // P/D condition ( 0 acces to aoe ) // S /d direct damage build // D/P direct damage build.
So if thieves are unable to burst down target fast, they must have acces to some form of survaivability.
Now everybody runs with an stun breaker // cond removal // decent armor in wvwvw, so most of thieves are forced to build arround Shadow arts.

I agree about stealth and stability:
I like to play warrior with at least one mace, and noticed that a lot of times my stuns are doing nothing cause of stability. So one day I decided “I’m going to counter it and take boon removal!!” . Then I looked through all warrior skills and… there was none. Traits maybe? Nope, also none.
While in GW1 I could grab a 2nd proffession and take removal from another class, in GW2 my only option really is rerolling. Yes there is a sigil , but the effect of it is random. I want to remove boon when the enemy has stability, not at random moments.
About stealth: dunno how we could counter this at all, there is a reason that other games only allow out of combat stealth…
So you want to have an build without an couter :
I found that thief " i pres 1 -2-3 and he is stunned at half hp
i found that greatsword warrior, he saw my mace, he use 1 utility slot for stability but i pres 3 4 5 and i want him stunned and half hp.
P.S. Bola works on stability (is an condition)

Stealth is just a little too overpowered.
Scenario:
You know there is a thief approaching…. he thinks you did not see him enter stealth and begin advancing toward your location… but you saw it all right.You begin to prepare for the duel…
You can’t hit him with projectiles while he is approaching…. but you might be able to tag him with some melee once he is in range…
…but how do you know when he is close enough?
You begin channeling your block skill…. but nothing strikes you before it is over.
You swing your weapon, and it seems as if you’ve hit nothing.
You swing it again, and still… your adversary remains cloaked.
Did you hit him? Is he even here yet?
You dodge roll just to be safe…. he has got to be here somewhere by now.
BAM
You are immobilized. You finally see the thief, but you are completely helpless as he takes large chunk out of your health bar.
Knowing that the assault will not stop, and your death will be quick otherwise, you use your stun-break skill to break free and actually move from defensive to offensive for a split second.

Actualy you can counter it with melle weapons , channeling skills
