GW2 Reddit Developer AMA Summary

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Roxanne.6140

They also pretty much told us that we won’t be seeing separate balance between WvW, PvP, and PvE because it’s just “too hard right now.”

It’s not hard at all. It just takes too long.

Do you really want balance changes and new content to take even longer to come out?

Yes. Here’s why:

Ok, great. We get new content. That’s awesome, I’d love for more things to do. After we wear the content out in a week, what’s left? For me, I PvP/WvW most of the time. Because of that, I first hand see how balance is out of whack right now. Balancing the game is the foundation. We play the classes to then play the content, so if the classes are imbalanced, the content will be less fun (for those with classes that aren’t performing as high as others).

Example: I started the HoT maps on my Thief. I died instantly numerous times to all the AoE/Pocket raptors/etc that’s littered around like glitter at a rave. I got mad and logged onto my Necro (which I don’t like playing), went into HoT, face rolled everything with ease. I understand that Thief is hard to play and it takes time to learn to play it at a level in which you don’t die to fluff as much as a Necro, which is why I’ve been playing since vanilla beta, but the QoL shouldn’t be that low in contrast in my opinion. Now, I can go on to talk about ranked PvP, but that’s a big wormhole. TL;DR, Thief isn’t viable in the current meta. The imbalance is there, and I like playing my Thief, but when I’m shown constantly that the game just doesn’t want me playing my Thief, and to play Rev/Engi/Necro/Ele/Guard instead, I’m not given much motivation to even try the content out.

That is why I personally would rather have balance over content. I can wait. That would just make the content more polished and give players more time to play in the (hopefully soon) WvW beta maps to give more feedback. We’ve already been waiting for a long time, if they can take a couple months to create separate balance throughout WvW/PvP/PvE, I’d never leave this game. It really shouldn’t be that difficult, but it seems that Anet has a hard time developing anything in an efficient and timely manner, given the good volume of workers they supposedly have.

Well what build are you using on your thief in HoT, there is a particular build that makes daredevil really tanky without loss to dps. Or not that much loss. Maybe you should go find more or read more guides. I just found that build to have a clunky playstyle so I don’t play it much

Egocentrism

Gaile Gray.6029:
First, to address what I feel is the reason for this thread. I agree that posting an opinion as an opinion, not fact, is the correct thing to do. I also agree that making sweeping statements isn’t appropriate, for each of us players represents ourselves, not the community at large.

Problem is on these forums you invariably get throngs of ‘clever’ posters attacking any opinion as ‘illogical’ or whatever other buzzword they’ve latched on to. Clearly insulting peoples intelligence but getting no punishment because it strictly isn’t an insult, but a descriptive of their argument, though used with full intention to insult intelligence and character of the poster.

And worse, these types of posters frequently get moderator support for their actions simply because of the subject matter.

Heck try posting a thread in favor of mounts or open world PvP if you don’t believe me. You could post bloody fully functional code and the thread would still within minutes be filled with spamming, sarcastic remarks, and round after round of the most vitriolic attacks on the character of anyone who dares share a supportive opinion of the suggestion. And if you report any of these attacks, nothing happens, I know, I’ve reported many such posts which were incontestably against the rules. Entire threads of hundreds of posts of nothing but mockery and insults and general mean-spiritedness, totally ignored. Seemingly for no reason other than it has just become the norm to treat those of certain opinions like second class citizens on these forums, to the point that even the moderators turn a blind eye to it.

What if whatever the OP posted was indeed so ridiculous that it makes whatever logical response to it seem sarcastic. Maybe OP posted, oh I want to PvP in the blighting towers in dragon stand. How do you respond to that kind of post in a way that is not sarcastic nor derogatory. I’ll slap myself if I needed to respond to such posts in a sugary coated politically correct response like honey dear you know killing players during a boss fight is just not civil or sweetie pls leave ppl alone in ‘x’ and ‘x’ situation because it is rude.

Do accounts have "luck", and is it right?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Roxanne.6140

Every account has the exact same chance on RNG.

Granted and accepted. But this doesn’t explain why you guys still stick to this kitten concept. I remember this very thread where we were called to discuss about rng as a concept, still everything is tied to RNG. Even more so when it’s possible to get some of the most valuable items (precursors) for the least challenging content (killing trash mobs in open world).
An no, I do not consider precursor crafting as a relief here. A mindless grindfest that simply doubles the cost for a legendary is no compensation for those cursed by rngsus.

Dude, rng is everywhere in all MMOs. In fact, grind and MMOs almost always go together hand in hand. Why don’t you propose an alternative system of reward. How about all character have a job in game so we can accumulate credit to pay for our items. Meanwhile, why don’t you also propose an alternative system for the economy so I don’t have to be stuck in a job

It’…

If everyone eventually gets a precursor or two or three, then what does that do to precursor prices, to Legendary prices and how many Legendaries are in game? If everyone (and I do mean everyone) has a Legendary, or 3, doesn’t that bring rarity down to the level of everyday exotics? If everyone has a completely filled wardrobe of all the items that can drop in game, doesn’t that mean that any drop you get is not exciting and low value? If ascended chests dropped more frequently so you can equip chars with armor, what does that do to the prices of the mats used in crafting? Most of the things sold in this game are crating related. If crafting takes a hit, most people’s income takes a hit too.

Yes well I was just trying to be helpful to the OP and offer suggestions instead of constantly putting OPs down :x

Nuhoch event chain in Tangled D. review

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Roxanne.6140

I agree with the second phase taking way too long. And you don’t get much for that amount of time put in. Maybe make the larva move quicker or something? Plus I think Nuhoch events scale too much, there was a time I had to make 20 trips for that single event to bring mushrooms back to the Nuhoch guard, that makes 40 runs (back and forth). In another event, we ran out of angry adolescent beetles to stomp, we were all just standing around with sticks in our hands waiting for angry adolescent beetles to spawn. I don’t think our numbers hit more than 10 then. I mean, it doesn’t sound very bad when I write it like this, but it took a way longer time than I remembered with a group of half the numbers we had.

imo this thread seems interesting and at the same time, I don’t get it at all. Maybe it is the lack of specifics. Unkind words are said on the internet all the time and unless it spills over to your real life friends or personal life, I really don’t get what the big deal is about. The moment a post goes towards being overly aggressive or trolly or just out to give me his best shot, it goes into the part of my brain that doesn’t process anything at all. Are you saying you went to team speak and people were outright nasty, or people didn’t include you in raids, or people making sexual jokes in map chat and you being a girl and all. Hell I’m a girl and I say lots of very inappropriate stuff sometimes. bite me

It’s just like how someone living next door to you can strike the lottery and you can’t, not even once in your entire life and you are in your 70’s now. My dad’s friend struck the lottery 3 times. Nvm I am digressing.

My suggestion to even out the odds is for an internal tracker behind each item for each player. The tracker will detect if the item has dropped for the player. Depending on the given rarity of the item, and also up to the game master’s judgement, the tracker will increase in probability with the play time put in by the player, or it may increase in probability with the number of chests or loot obtained by the player. This way, it will ensure that everybody gets every single item the same as everyone does.

Dragon's Stand Empty Maps

Sorry for the interruption
/Interrupt: DS maps fill very quickly as there is only a small window between the end of one map run and the start of the other. So they aren’t really empty but this is very much similar to the accessibility some have been talking about and by some I really mean me.
If you are crashing in battle, I suggest for you to turn your graphics to the minimum. I don’t have chronic crashing problems on DS so far, thankfully.
/Interrupt

How polite

Yeah what I find is that if you show up 15 minutes prior to the maps resetting (even five minutes) you are gold. If you are able to find a group via LFG in the first few minutes of DS starting then you have a chance, but the odds go down every minute. If you want a sure fire opportunity to get into a DS meta group all you have to do is show up within this window… every two hours. The earlier the better.

The link may of gotten lost in the pointless argument so I’ll repost it to those who are curious on how to track HoT events.

http://dulfy.net/2015/11/09/gw2-hot-maps-timer-famme/

Dragon Stand is the purple bar. The light purple is the off-time (Times you are unlikely to find any open servers/or taxi’s.) If you show up prior to the dark purple part you will find a group no matter what. Just squad join with the tag prior to the map reset.

Ex. The next DS meta is at 7:30 PM (Central). Show up around 7:15-7:25 and I guarantee you will find a group. Show up any later and your odds go down.

Yes that works, I have tried it myself before. There’s usually a band aid for such situations but that is what it is to me, a band aid. A mad rush within fifteen minutes for a 2 hour event and you can’t choose which fifteen minutes. Maybe I went to the toilet to poop for a bit and I have to wait Another two hours because of my poop, that’s four hours gone and totals to a morning or afternoon or evening. I guess there are problems with a more flexible schedule if people are allowed to join a late map and get rewards without putting in effort. But there must be some way around this, I think there are smart people in anet for this ya

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Roxanne.6140

Ok, i was a bit kittened off earlier, so i didn’t expressed myself correctly. What i meant is that i find this part (Chapter 8: City of Hope; the trial of strength specifically) too hard for the casual player. Hey, i’m experienced, I’ve played many MMOs, i’ve been playing this game since it started, i know what i’m doing, I know when to use range or melee, but i always struggle with this part. So I put myself in the shoes of my friend (and any player with her level of experience) and it’s become really hard and it takes the fun away. It’s a game it’s suppose to be fun… it’s not supposed to be a chore.

P.S. i finally succeeded an hour ago after taking 3 deep breath. and i didn’t have to change my traits so your argument of trait doesn’t stand. I still stand by my opinion.

Nice try at reverse psychology, complain about something so obviously most people will disagree with to make a point at complaining.

There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Roxanne.6140

Roxanne.6140

The game doesn’t have to be structured around your life to make it easily accessible. Think of the dungeons before HoT and LFG, how easy it was to play dungeons before. Each Silverwastes run takes an average of half an hour plus it can start whenever you want it. AB boss fight itself takes around half hour or so, I didn’t really notice but it feels like that. And that is without counting the pre-events you generally have to do to ensure a successful map. I have been on maps where no pre-events were done and the boss was still defeated but that is rare and it requires super determined and cooperative players, imagine fighting the boss for half an hour and it fails? I personally contributed alot of salt myself and I am not ashamed of it. TD maps require alot of coordination too, I think it is shorter than AB after the patch but you need 4 people willing to tag up and enough people on the map to disperse themselves out yada yada etc. Let’s not get started on DS. GW2 is now less a game where you can easily log in, do a bit of something and get loot or rewards.

I feel that if the old content was not nerfed out of existence, it would have given players a choice in the type of content they want to play and probably discontented people will not need to leave the game. I’m sure the new maps can be tweaked such that there is no need for an entire full map to make it successful and ensure rewards. There is a way to please all sides.

A drop in players?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Roxanne.6140

Roxanne.6140

I agree, I am not advocating tiered gear. What I was saying is that players want to progress. Whether that is into new content or with new gear. The devs need to provide that. If you don’t have both, then you need to do the one you are doing faster. So since there is no increase in gear past ascended in this game. As a result new content has to come out faster. Otherwise the game gets stale for a lot of people. Sure there are many that will still play. Most even. But for many players, shiny and new is fun, exciting and the main reason they play. Whether that is gear or content.

Yea well I agree we are waiting really long for the legendaries promised to us. Maybe they are thinking of the market for amalgamated gems once the new legendaries become available. The gems will probably cost as much as a legendary itself, like a legendary within a legendary. Legception

A drop in players?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Roxanne.6140

Roxanne.6140

In our guild we have noticed a definite drop in active player roles. We have also spoken with leaders of some other larger guilds. They have also noticed the same. People that previously would play a lot are just not logging in anymore. They are still around in TS, playing other games. I am sure they will come back for LS3. But as soon as that is done they will dwindle again I am sure.

I understand that this game does not have tiered gear progression. They don’t want your stuff to become obsolete. But, as a game dev, if you are going to do that you need to release more content, faster. People want either new stuff or to progress. Sure you can grind out a legendary and it might be fun for the first one. But it doesn’t make you any stronger, faster, better. It is just shiny. Anet really needs to up the production speed on new content otherwise the slow hemorrhage will continue imo

Tiered gear is gated gear and gated content, gated gear means grind. Grind causes people from f2p mmos to leave games as well. I enjoy this game because it is not f2p mmo styled.

Achievement gated behind people

I don’t know why are people running all over the place in this thread, I specifically meant the Skritt Thieves camp achievement event in Dry Top lol. I never meant it as there aren’t enough people as thing; it’s different from Evolved Jungle Worm if you looked at it in a holistic way.

When we go for T6 in DT, we normally have 2-3 people doing that event. It gets more difficult when there’s more people as the skritt scale up and take longer to kill.

Yes well, but more people sometimes means more cc’s and other stuff they bring to the table. It’s like how mobs in Chak Gerent will overrun a team of 5 but a team of 10 can handle the mobs, from my observations in the past anyway

There’s a guild called Sands that does organized Dry Top runs. Just join up and run it with them, get your achievements, have some fun. Get some T6 maps too.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll be sure to look out for them

Achievement gated behind people

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Roxanne.6140

Roxanne.6140

OP: you’d have to be specific about which events you think need tweaking. In almost all cases, there are two likely scenarios:

  • Success depends on knowing the mechanics: 50 people are just more likely to complete it, since there’s a better chance that enough folks know how it works.
  • Success depends on large-scale coordination, in which case, if you’re on a ‘feeder’ map, you’d need to taxi to an organized one.

Dry Top has both situations:

  • To reach T4 and beyond, you have to be on a map in which 30+ people are willing to spend the effort to get there.
  • Two specific events (skritt thieves at the camp and the researcher escort) require only a few people that understand the core mechanics (and explain to others who just show up).

The skritt thief camp requires people to actually be there when the event starts, and a decent number of people as well. The achievement fails as soon as any skritt walks back to the hole with the supply, and it is a short walk and there are many skritt thieves. The event itself is doable with a few people, but the achievement needs many to be around and willing to do. At this point in time, I would say the people who care to do have done it, and those who do not care are either in HoT or doing something else

Seeing how so many new maps focused on organized group content opened up, people are bound to be more spread out between all the maps. It is probably expected that some of the events that used to have alot of people in the past will now have fewer, especially lesser known events that rely on people who just happen to be there and who actually want to do the event. But some achievements seem to be gated behind having a large enough number of people doing obscure events, Dry Top for instance. Maybe some of these achievements need changes to keep up with the times huh

Well I guess there’s some form of racism here because nothing like this was said when there was winters day and Halloween and some other events. Yet people are complaining when there is Chinese new year reference. I hear ppl in divinity reach yelling USA all day too. Just literally login to yell USA like a kkk

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

alternatively, anet may look at the overall dps and calculate how much time does the boss have to live, then look at the individual dps of each player and consider how many times the player went down or near downed but not downed state. Then after which anet will extrapolate based on all the data how long each player should wait to respawn after considering also the timelength taken for the player to run back to the boss from the nearest uncontested waypoint. the end result is that everyone regardless of gear and playstyle should deal the equal amount of damage to the boss. even the ress-speed by neighboring players should be tweaked to ensure this equality.

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

In my honest opinion, the only way out of this situation is for ANet to come up with a programming method that detects who are the zerkers and restrict them from respawning till the boss is dead or till the event failed. You see you know why, it is because zerkers theoretically would have dealt the maximum amount of damage during that time they were alive as someone who lasted longer but dealt less damage. If you drew some kind of graph you would understand that the area under both graphs would be the same and therefore, it makes sense that zerkers and only zerkers should not respawn.

hm, are most people in this thread belonging to soem guild? I wanna join that guild if you are, please pm me, thanks vv much and have a great day

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

Perhaps Daddicus can elaborate which situation does he find glass cannon to be an exploit. As I see it, there are things to lose when you die, running back after dying is a drop in overall dps in the open world. PLenty of bosses have some kind of timer that acts as a dps check. This strategy you speak of does not really apply to dungeons either as all party members need to be out of combat for the dead to respawn and the boss will regenerate its health fully. How about you join raids if you want to play various builds?

I’m thinking you are advocating for long fights where players win by having more sustainability, it’s probably very good for people with plenty of time on their hands so they can get more fun out of putting in more time to get the same stuff which they did before. Probably the minimum amount of time required to play GW2 should be buffed, as according to you so that we may siphon off those people who need to work, have partners and maybe some other things in life to look at.

Staff elementalists have been dealt another slap once again in favour of PvP/wvw changes to ele defence. I’d like to know the synergy between harder mobs in HOT, melee tempest skills and lowered ele defence without any visible damage boost

can those elitist pvp players stop messing with my pve game!

Changes to the ele are getting more and more ridiculous, first introduce melee skills on tempest, make harder mobs and now nerf ele defence even in pve.

God Mode in Pve/WvW

oh look here’s another “balance” centred around pvp/wvw and affecting pve along the way. If so much balance is needed, can there be 2 seperate game modes and 2 seperate traits, one for pve and another for wvw/pvp? I mean the entire environment is different, I don’t see why one has to keep taking the hit for the other.

Not to mention updating and manually placing a tick off each and every event you have done. Way to go, more work and play fused together
