Probably not. Wouldn’t that make new gear useless and new content pointless?
Edit
Legendary upgrade path seems like a nifty idea however. Maybe 1/2 the mats to upgrade your level 80 to 90?
My brain isn’t working yet, maybe I am not comprehending.

I would like to add that using map chat /m to ask for help is not unheard of.
Pro Tip: Shift Clicking a way point on your mini map will link it to chat and people can click on the link in chat and teleport to that way point if they have it discovered.
Also you can join DE events that are broadcast in /m as well, since there is no limit to how many of these you can do.
Like Jayne said, Tarnished Coast is a very active server and I rarely go more than a few minutes without seeing people and chat is always active.
Don’t get frustrated!
I had a tough time getting into the groove of this game after 8 years of WoW, it literally took me a couple of weeks to play it for more than about an hour or so every 3-4 days.
Then I was like you, I wanted some answers and found them here and on the wiki page.
I gave the game a solid try, took my time, explored everywhere and was in utter amazement at how incredible this game looks.
Once I got the basics down, created a couple of professions that I wanted to try, often deleting and recreating with different races to find the right combination I had in mind and now…it’s like crack and it’s great. (disclaimer: crack is not great, it’s a terrible thing and illegal, gw2 however is great and legal)
Explore, be careful and always have an escape path.
I’ve leveled 3 characters through Orr maps and had a blast doing it. Is it more difficult? YES! Is it frustrating at times? YES! Was it fun? A very subjective YES!
I also play on TC and I have never had to do any event solo and I just leveled 3 professions through there in the last week. (Thief, Ranger, Necro). Some of the DE I have done I was 2+ levels below the event mobs, but with a group, it was never a problem, a challenge, but not a problem.
But, like mentioned, FSG is a much friendlier place and free of the undead who seem to drink a ton of 5 hour energy.
Minion Master Necro
20/0/30/20/0
Staff – Scepter/Dagger
Minions are stupid, but not useless as many people claim. I give them the 50% more life trait, 30% more damage trait, siphon health to me when they hit and when I get life siphoned to me, it heals my allies.
My minions can blind, immobilize and get the attention of a mob that would otherwise be on a player.
My abilities allow me to AoE slow, AoE heal Aoe Condition removal/transfer and fear and have short cool downs.
All while sucking the life out of everything on the screen.
If they would tweak the minion AI the MM Necro would be pure beast mode.
Oh yeah, I’m also pretty kitten hard to kill.
No. I personally do not want them given away.
I have made a small fortune from selling gift boxes on the TP because I don’t give two kittens about anything they contain.
Don’t take away my ability to profit from people’s bad luck.
Is it barely 3 hours into January on the east coast, or am I crazy?
Never underestimate people’s will to find the easiest possible way to get things done.
Can you be banned for this?
I have a Thief, Necro (Minion Master) and a Ranger at 80 currently.
My favorite for Orr MF farming is the Necro because I can solo some group event bosses and have the best AOE in the game. Survival out the wazoo and can stack MF without worrying too much about kill speed.
Thief is my favorite for discovering and resource gathering because stealth, specifically shadow refuge, is just so OP. This is also my WvWvW choice, because I get to pick most of my battles.
My Ranger is pretty much just sitting because I have 2 professions that can do what I need much better, but it was fun to level. Do enjoy some WvWvW with this one as well but not as much as Thief.
My Warrior is level 50 and pretty much easy mode for leveling. 5 signet GS/Rifle is just hot knife through butter most of the time.
My other alts are ~25 and have not put a lot of time into yet, working on one of each profession, currently lacking only the Engineer.
During the story quest where you are disguised as a bandit, you kill an NPC named “Chaingun Kelly”, which i assume is referencing the rapper Machine Gun Kelly
Or…the notorious gangster George Celino Barnes AKA Machine Gun Kelly
I don’t seem to be having any problems with making money.
Granted I do not have a ton of gold but I have made enough to buy 2 character slots and a bank slot with gems, that I bought with gold, exotic level 80 gear on 3 characters with runes and upgrade any missing pieces every 10 levels on my characters I am leveling currently -and- I don’t mind way point traveling to get map completes, join in announced events or just go back to DV to empty bags etc.
Oh, and I have never stepped foot in a dungeon.
So the issue is not the game or the ability to make gold in it.
Probably.
/15 bottles of beer on the wall.
All I can gather from this whole thread is apparently, in today’s world, personal opinions are facts.
But I get bored sitting around doing nothing in an instance spamming the same buttons over and over
This is the exact reason I quit WoW.
People who HATE WoW type games to keep playing their mindless spam 12345 at a boss that doesn’t move to keep playing their mode.
Again, this is exactly like WoW.
I think there is more to the story than what was said.
I find it very hard to believe that Anet bans people just because they were reported for role play.
RPers don’t get a free ride just because they are RPing, you have to abide by the same rules as the rest of the players.
It’s their server, their game you have to play by their rules. Pretty simple.
Don’t worry, once you get to Orr most of the WP will be contested a majority of the time and you can wade through the plethora of mobs every 10 feet.
Veteran Risen Abomination
Worst mob ever. I avoid these like the plague because they cannot be slowed, stunned, knocked back or down and they hit like a truck non stop and knock down every 3 seconds.
I was doing my personal story on my Minion Necro in Mount Maelstrom with Trehearne and a whole group of NPCs and we came across one of these one and he systematically took down every npc and Treahearne before we even had half of his health down. He then proceeded to dismantle my minions in one hit before coming after me.
Lucky for me, I know that mobs cannot jump and proceeded to kite him by jumping up a level forcing him to run around then jump back down while resummoning my minions on cool down. It took me 15 minutes to kill this guy. He might as well have been a group boss.
I’m only going to comment on the request for ranger pet attention.
Play a Minion Master Necro, go do it. You will BEG for your pet back on your Ranger. The Ranger pet has way better AI, more controllable than the Necro pets, have some fantastic F2 abilities and lets not mention can survive way better and heal out of combat…I could go on but you get the point I hope.
The Ranger pet is fine like it is, although I will agree Rangers need a way to put their pets away.
For reference, I have an 80 Necro (Minion Master the whole way) and a 78 Ranger.
Good way to get another point out about how much some people hate MF. I don’t believe a word of it, as it’s a little too obvious.
How about everyone use MF so everyone gets better drops at the cost of a slightly slower dungeon run? It solves all the issues people are complaining about.
So, everyone stack your MF and get your loot!
Thank you so much >.< i was stressing out so bad about this…
You are way more help than this game is =\
All the information you could ever want about the game is available if you just take the time to actually look for it.
For instance, the time it took you to create this thread, wait for replies and get the answer you were looking for, you could have simply when to this page and discovered this on your own. There are even in game tips that inform you that the mail system has a 10 mail limit and to receive additional mail you must delete some.
I guess it’s easier to rage about something rather than actively seek out this information though. :\
Welcome to GW2.
No, there is no trinity system in GW2.
I’m looking for something on par with Naxxramas 40-man in WoW. Naxxramas took two and a half months for the first guild to clear. That’s called difficulty. Why can’t we see fights designed so well?? That was in 2006… it’s almost 2013 ANet.
Although I agree with this for the most part, but the majority spoke in WoW about only the hard core “no life” players (minority) got to see that content and the “care bear” casual players (majority) who spend the same amount of money on the game did not. This is why WoW is currently a press 2 and win epics raid design. (BTW in 2006 I was in the hard core no lifer section of this player base and wanted it to stay just like it was)
I would love to see these types of scenarios in GW2 but I just do not think the system supports it. Yet.
Or give golems to the engineer profession through a trait line.
Much like the necro has a minion tree, only at 5 trait point mark it turns your turrets into golems, basically turrets with legs. If you spec 30 points into the trait tree it has a major trait that gives you the equivalent of the flesh golem, a hard hitting slugger with an aoe knockdown.
Golems can range from slow moving missle throwers that have a “hunker down” f2 that makes them immobile but increases their armor and adds a melee range flame thrower, to simi auto gunners with an f2 that has an aoe burst fire that gives quickness for 5 seconds to anyone in the area. Even a medi-bot that gives health regen and an aoe heal.
Seriously, the possibilities are pretty wide open. I would play this engineer, a profession I loathe currently.
*edited for de-wowing
I’m sorry but this game is balanced around PvP. Hence the title; Guild Wars! .
I’m sorry but this is not true.
The Guild Wars are the series of at least three wars among different guilds in the three human kingdoms of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr. The wars ended only because the charr invasion from the north meant an even bigger threat to the three kingdoms.
The second Guild War was memorialized by the construction of Surmia in 1020 AE. Ascalon was the kingdom victorious of this war according to the Historical Monument of Surmia. It is unlikely that the war ended during 1020 AE, however, due to the length of the latest Guild War.
The most recent Guild War lasted for 57 years (from 1013 AE until 1070 AE). The war caused much suffering and hatred between the people of the three kingdoms. These old wounds can be seen in the present day in the form of the mistrust King Adelbern holds towards the efforts of Kryta to help Ascalon recover from the charr invasion, particularly towards Ambassador Zain. During this war, King Adelbern was a war hero which led to his eventual crowning as a king instead of Barradin becoming king.
While there have been many Guild Wars prior to this one, when characters in the game refer to the Guild War, they mean the last one which ended with the Searing. While initially confined to a conflict between guilds, when open combat erupted in the streets of Arah, Orr responded to protect its holy city. The military action against Krytan and Ascalonian guilds spurred the other nations into responding, leading to open conflict between the three nations.
My white Wolf is named Ying and my Jaguar is named Yang.
Polar Bear is named Murphy.
Drake Hound is named Jughead (after a pit pull I used to have, RIP buddy)
Those are the only ones I really use and there is no sense in me naming them all when they default back to their original names.
Lets hope it’s good cause they say that every month :/
No they don’t.
They’ve been saying that there is a big update coming, not once have I ever seen them promise big changes monthly.
It’s the same on TC, if you are a hard core RPer you will want to join a dedicated RP guild.
At least it’s not like the WoW RP server where all they do is kitten in the deep run tram.
Whenever I am doing my TP, crafting, chatting up /m or just randomly alt tabbed out for any length of time it’s usually in Divinity’s Reach because the bank and tp are so close together it just feels more convenient for me. I have the sounds of the game kept on while alt tabbed so I can still hear the game while looking up something on the fly.
Here’s the issue. Some of the female NPCs in this area of DR have very erotic sounding voice emote, (moans) and they spam them constantly and it’s pretty annoying after a while.
Could you please fix it so they do not do this on a loop? Thanks.
I would like to have a trait switching ability as well, when farming on my Necro I like to use the minions and be spec’d for minions but that is not viable for dungeons (general consensus) and it would suck to have to tell people to wait for me while I go to a trainer, and re-allocated my traits. Fortunately for my Necro my dungeon and farming gear is practically identical so I wouldn’t have to tote around 2 sets of gear.
In the games you listed the CPU/GPU do not have to render hundreds of other players and their armor effects etc… which kills frame rates the most in an MMO (and particle effects)
Many people with high end machines complain about the frame rate drops in wvwvw because there are so many players and effects going on.
As previously mentioned, in time they will (hopefully) optimize the game to perform better on a wider range of machines.
The intent is to get folks buying gems with real money and converting to gold. Farming has been nerfed.
This is misleading, farming got nerfed because of exploits and bots, not because players were legitimately earning too much and Anet wanted to force them into their wallets.
There has to be check and balances or the economy will fail.
I wished you people with your tin foil hat theories would stop with this drivel.
Wait so they punish honest players just to get their point across? Awesome thats such a great position to take.
Not to get their point across, to stop the economy from getting out of control.
Does it suck for the legit player? Sure it does but like mentioned in another post, there are other ways to make gold and any player with the IQ of a turnip could see that.
If you would read the reply on one of the threads by someone who got a card, Anet said they send out about 1000 cards a year to random players.
Sorry you didn’t get picked but neither did 99.9% of the people who bought their game.

I think there just needs to be an in depth guide in game during the tutorial (opening personal story) on how to play against group bosses, since these are the ones with the most visual queues to watch for when fighting that I have seen. The “end boss” in the personal story opening doesn’t count since you can technically kill them blind folded.
Maybe change that, have an option when you create a new character to ask the player if they would like to play the “new player” tutorial which will pause the game to give key pointers and walk them through the process of avoiding damage, give details about boons and conditions and support/aoe skills and effective downed state abilities.
For example, the new player chooses this option and they are fighting the end boss, a large red circle appears the game pauses and tells the player what the circle is, and how to dodge by double tapping a direction or using a dodge key and even ask if they would like to set up a dodge key (if one is not currently set up, which is not by default), if they say yes, it would tell them to press a key to bind to dodge and that the fight will continue and to use the dodge feature when the game resumes. Even awarding small XP gains for successfully dodging.
I know it’s hand holding but it would be an option that I think would make the game much more approachable by players who are new to MMOs, or veterans of other MMOs whose combat is so much different than GW2’s.
Let me say the only reason I suggest this is because even at higher level content, which I consider to be level 40+, a player should know all the basics to fighting difficult group encounters and using their abilities in the downed state to be most effective but sadly this is not the case more than you might think.
I know this information exists via the forums, blogs and youtube but a lot of people do not actively seek out this information, for whatever reason.
As for being anti-melee, I agree it seems that melee gets a raw deal but there are so many tools at melee’s disposal for dealing with it and every melee profession has a ranged component alternative and weapon switching is as simple as clicking a button.
Glad to see you got an update on this build, been holding off on my guardian (leveled my first character to 80, a necro) for an update.
Also, free bump.
I like this guide. I leveled as a MM and once I got to 80 I knew I would have to play something else for dungeons and pvp and this hit the mark for information.
Thank you.
Item drops have to go.
Item drops promote players to not be their best they can be, hinder their teamates which is greedy and not cool, item drops needs to be gone from mmos, just make grind based with no item drops and it would be basicly the same thing as having item drops. Don’t think about it. I do not want to take the gold farm route, therefore no others players should be allowed to do so. I also hate spell check.
haha +1 this.
Let me start off by saying this; asking about the game on the forums will net you a ton of complainers, I mean just look around, most of the threads are complaints but that does in no way provide a general consensus of the player’s thoughts of the game.
There are plenty of people playing and happy.
The best choice would be to try it for yourself, they have a return policy, if you are not enjoying the game, return it.
You will not get good traits till level 40.
My build is the best MM build that heal minions too. I’m level 80 pure MM.
http://tinyurl.com/9ure-MM-build > All my set increases condition damage and some power to support my staff and daggers skills. My vitality and toughness are high too.
Minions siphoning will be your main healing source.
This is the exact build I use (work towards, currently level 78) but I use scepter/dagger and staff and I absolutely love it. It is so good for exploring and mowing through the game world. It’s a force to recon with no doubt and I hope they never change it.
Well let’s hope that Anet do a much better job at class balancing (which does take time to do) than WoW’s roller coaster ride of class balance that renders once viable builds completely worthless on a patch by patch basis, except with mages, they never get nerfed.
Also, Nay of the Ether has valid points to consider.
This idea can fix AL once and for all.
Just give us the Ranger’s pets control panel >> F2 > attack , F3 > return to me.
I agree with this, also allow us to put our pets away for sneaking through tight areas. Make it a storage type ability to put your current summoned minions away and then with a single button respawn them all at once.
Another thing I want to point out here, underwater I seem to summon my pets almost instantly whereas on land it takes 2 seconds or so. Not topic related but something I was curious about.
I do love my Necro, and as I approach level 80 (78 currently) I know I am going to have to switch out of my Minion Master spec to explore other parts of the game, and it saddens me but I will enjoy adjusting to a different play style and seeing how I can push this class.
I’ve never been in a dungeon and only dabbled in WvW a bit to see what it was like, but I do know that minions do not fare well in those generally.
But for farming pve content I know that MM is the best way to go for me and my style of playing. I love it and I think I can stack quite a bit MF and not lose much of my kitten stomping power. I look forward to it.
Maybe you should adjust your play style to the class instead of asking (demanding) for the class to be changed to fit your play style.
Also, you shouldn’t be expecting this game’s professions to be what other games did with similar professions, so comparing them is pointless.
It really boils down to what you want to do. There are some very different play styles with almost every profession, and that is such a good thing being an 8 year WoW veteran and watching every class being forced into a single build to be optimum.
To me, my favorite class is the Necro, specifically a minion master. Having my own personal little army to lay waste to the hoards of mobs is just very satisfying to me. It reminds me of my glory days of D2 with a Skelly-mancer build. (and PoE summoner build).
I can survive some of the most unfavorable situations in the game that would send any of my other characters to the way point to res. lol which is all the time BTW because the minion AI has the IQ of a doorknob, it keeps me on my toes. Luckily it’s a non issue just an annoyance because like I said, I can overcome the situation 90% of the time.
I like Orr so far on my Necro. Having to wade through the endless undead to get to any point is what I fully expect the area closest to the enemy base to be like. I am, after all, descending into the heart of the Dragon’s nest, I don’t think I should be able to stroll up and knock on the door unabated.
When I find a few people in the same area moving the same direction there is a silent agreement to work as a group to achieve the same common goal and I love this about GW2, I am not forced to group with them to get my drops or my event completion.
Orr is great. It is what it is and I hope it stays that way.
I have definitely gotten my monies worth from the game. The problem I see with some people is that they take 1 character to max level and feel they have done all there is to do and I think they are short changing themselves.
But I am an alt-aholic, I like playing every profession and exploring every inch of the game world, not just rushing through on a high level character using a website to tell me where all the POIs and such are located but genuinely exploring, as I level. The game world is beautiful, with lots of little surprises hidden away all over the place.
Anet spent a load of time to make the leveling experience a good one and I feel that too many players have the WoW mentality of rushing to end game expecting there to be more to do than leveling.
This is just my opinion and I know people have different views than I do, but this is what an MMO is supposed to be, a leveling experience to be savored, not an end game rush to get the best gear as quick as possible (Thanks WoW /sarcasm) and with no monthly sub, GW2 doesn’t force you to feel you are getting your sub fee’s worth of end game content.
The game is 4 months old, there will be more content that will cost nothing extra to experience. There is nothing wrong with taking breaks from the game to allow content to be added, since there is no monthly sub.
Merry Christmas to the players and the Anet staff, have a safe and happy holiday!
Explore explore explore!
The game world is an eyegasm.
TC is one of the most populated servers, I have seen a plethora people in almost every zone I have played (6 characters ranging between 22-78).
I have found that the Charr, Asura and Sylvari areas above level 15 are much less populated than the Norn and Human areas. I think people choose these two races more because of aesthetics. I’m guilty of this myself, I just like human types over shell-less turtles, sticks or cats.
With that in mind, the Human areas are always bustling. Queensdale has as much active chat as LA.
Yeah just click the bar at the top of the minimap and drag it down.
