"Kick From Party" Abuse & Suggestion

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Saint.5647

Saint.5647

I think this idea is still susceptible to foul play though. Trolls will of course object to being kicked and having 2 or more in a party would mean you’re forced to keep them on board.

I don’t know that there is a solution that will work in every situation. Personally, if my group does need to find a PUG to fill a spot, we make sure to specify what we need up front. The time to ask them to leave or kick them is at the beginning. If we’re into the instance though, it’s just poor form to kick someone. Unless they are an intentional troll of course.

How the heavys destroyed the fun in PvE

I think he’s saying that stacking has a negative effect on players that don’t understand the underlying mechanic. I understand it as something similar to giving children calculators before they learn to do math by hand.

By the volume of posts that assume stacking constitutes of “Spam auto attack and stand still”, I wouldn’t say that he’s too far off the mark. His example of the CoE PUG sounds like a standard ‘stack and pray’ where the group didn’t really know the boss at all but hoped they could kill it before having to time an evade.

Or maybe I’m reading too much into it but I also do notice a lot of folks who are trying to play the meta builds without understanding why they are traited the way they are. This is no doubt a contributing factor to the OPs ‘heavies only’ problem. Lack of game understanding.

Cleric Guardian?

Thad’s advice is very solid. Having played since launch is good but it wouldn’t hurt to gain an understanding of your stats and trait load-out. Unless you’re going for a timed run or you need high AR levels, you can do without the Ascended gear until you’re 100% certain of what set you want.

It sounds like you’re comfortable with Knight’s right now and don’t enjoy the squishyness of a Zerker’s set. Maybe some time in the future you’ll have an easier time staying alive but may wish you hadn’t spent the gold on the Cleric’s set.

At any rate, Knight’s is a superior choice to Cleric’s for PvE.

Always dead

Saint.5647

…on my lv37 Ele. I have 2.2K hp, we come to the lovers fight, and in the first 2 seconds I’m not only downed but interrupted repeatedly and dead. Why? Because whirlwind knockback ….

So, your HP won’t really have much bearing on your survivability in PvE. As an Ele, you will bring a whole lot of DPS to the table but you do need to be more mindful of your surroundings that other classes with more passive defenses.

Three things to keep in mind:

1. Leveling can kind of suck sometimes. Being level 37, you don’t have all your skills, utilities, and elites unlocked. This can be tough.

2. Please do change utilities often (as the situation dictates). It isn’t a bad idea to keep Arcane Shield on your skill bar often. Perhaps in your case, Armor of Earth for the stability. You can also run S/F, still be able to stack all the might you need, and be able to lean on Obsidian Flesh to negate some of those big hits.

3. Depending on your build, vigor may not come easy. Eles do tend to get targeted often by bosses. Make sure you start picking up on the subtle ‘tells’ enemies have before an attack. Everything (I’m quite sure) in PvE has some sort of ‘tell’ or ‘windup’ that can help you anticipate an attack.

…not be forced into speccing full toughness/vitality. I made dps roles because that’s what I enjoy doing. I do not want to tank or heal yet I am expected to do so just to survive more than one hit from anything in any dungeon.

It’s good that you are interested in playing a DPS role right off the bat. It’s currently the way to PvE content in GW2. Aside from that, it is (imo) much more enjoyable to see large numbers and see the positive contribution YOU make to the team. You will however go down quite easily if you don’t stay on your toes. The Ele isn’t a class for someone isn’t willing or able to react quickly.

Edit: Oh haha…and good luck :P

Agree 100% with Ghost. Got in early and knocked it all out on day one (before the initial wave of bugs). Replay gets by two major things (for me).

1. Progress halting bugs. It sucks getting your time and performance wasted.

2. Rapid deterioration of able players. I find that the day of launch (and shortly after), I find the best players and overall server compositions. While folks are still figuring out how it all works, this period tends to do very well.

Trying it a week or so later is a pretty big gamble with lack of participation and poor players (no dodge, no DPS, no understanding, etc…).

Because it felt cheapened to me. The LS wasn’t really in a good place when this dungeon came. They took out a ‘core’ dungeon path to replace with some temporary content. It left me with a pretty poor feeling. It would have been fine as a ‘flavor of the week’ imo, or even as an additional path.

Charge the trap by the far pillar. The distance to pull oozes on this one is the shortest. Stack on that far pillar with one pulling. After his AoE is wasted to the side, he triggers trap and can be pulled to pillar. Less than 2 seconds to kill with the right composition. You should be able to do with one trap in most cases though (with a coordinated, DPS group).

It isn’t right to ignore this process. The right answer is to help players learn the mechanics of the fight if they are having difficulty.

That’s what I liked about Molten Facility. You encounter the shockwaves early on, and learn the timing of jumping over them. This makes the Molten Duo at the end of the dungeon less frustrating, because you’re being confronted with familiar mechanics at a higher difficulty.

Well done. I enjoyed that one a lot. I think a lot of folks did. However, as far as I’m aware of, that encounter added a new mechanic (shockwaves) so they really had to teach it. If you recall, they didn’t teach the enraged mechanics. That was something players had to figure out.

I think when it comes to dungeons there is a certain level of trial and error that is acceptable.

No one knew when the game first came out how useful reflects were. I remember scrambling to dodge all of Lupi’s AoEs. Isolating a particular problem and working on a solution for your team is part of the learning process.

I agree. But I do think it’s the responsibility of the designers to drop enough clues to help players figure out this problem. And in some cases, they kind of dropped the ball in that regard.

I think the difficulty of most dungeons is directly related to the number of unfair mechanics in them, rather than challenging content. Like for example how all archers in CM suddenly are rooted to the ground and can’t be CC’d, with no reason given, yet they deal pretty devastating damage. Or that annoying dog-boss (who is optional btw) who takes forever to kill because he has more HP than anything else in the dungeon, and spams fear constantly. That sort of stuff really tends to rub a lot of players the wrong way I think. Dungeons should be consistent in their mechanics, and should communicate them clearly to the players.

Right. I agree they really did drop the ball hard. The trouble is that those players did not learn these mechanics before entering dungeons. The game’s ‘core’ dungeons introduce no new mechanics as far as I am aware. Conditions, AoEs, etc…these are all already in the game.

The main point of contention is who’s responsibility it was to make sure players understood the content. I don’t think Anet did a good job at teaching players the basics of the game. That said, many folks picked it up as they went. I don’t agree with lowering the difficulty of (what I consider to be) very easy content.

I do however strongly believe that the ’Hero of Shaemoor* (or equivalent) section should include a skip-able tutorial like in Nightfall where players could chose the tutorial route for the first quest/mission or the regular one. Here players would be prompted to dodge attacks, cleanse conditions, interact with combo fields, etc…

Well Queen, I don’t know at what stage players were intended to learn the game.

We do know that Anet isn’t happy with the current level of player skill and understanding though.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/madness/Well-I-defended-these-new-events-at-first/page/5#post3559127

Do keep in mind that the dungeons are not intended as teaching content for the game, but rather, challenging content. When I say learning how to ‘dodge’ in the context of Kholer, I don’t mean actually learn how to dodge. It is assumed the player should already be familiar with this.

What I mean is that a player new to Kholer (having watched no guides and playing without guild assistance) will need to learn the specific fight in order to know when to dodge, reflect, etc… There is a process to learning mechanics

It isn’t right to ignore this process. The right answer is to help players learn the mechanics of the fight if they are having difficulty. With the right players and composition the Kholer fight can be done in around 1-2 seconds. This isn’t the ‘gold standard’ for all groups. I simply mean that rather than complain, do try to think about why he is difficult and work on it systematically.

No one knew when the game first came out how useful reflects were. I remember scrambling to dodge all of Lupi’s AoEs. Isolating a particular problem and working on a solution for your team is part of the learning process.

Relative difficulty: SE, CM, TA, CoF are all easier than AC. Perhaps they should have made one of them first. It’s a done deal now. As with anything, practice makes perfect.

On Kholer: Folks should learn to dodge Kohler’s attacks and be better players. He is optional though for those who simply cannot or will not.

Knights and Player Psychology

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Saint.5647

Saint.5647

Solution: Fix the scaling. Make it assume less DPS from each player

This is it really. I did this event on the first two days only. I tried again once later during the week. The difference was massive.

With players using food and potions, in DPS gear, it isn’t a problem. I’m not sure exactly how the scaling works either. It’s no secret that it is known to be wonky. However, most of the time in open world events, when you get 20 extra players from somewhere, you can generally assume that 15 of them will be PVT or something equally low DPS.

Because of this, you see a huge spike in Boss HP and yet nowhere near the corresponding DPS to justify.

Suggestion: Scale mobs to DPS comp instead of raw numbers. Or allow large scale, hosted instances with gated controls to entrance.

The 1-80 zones of the game right now are all pre Zhaitan death zones. Southsun is not.

Are you sure?

An interesting point. One I’ve considered myself as well. Some of the NPC dialogue is indeed contradictory. Actually, traveling to Sparkfly before completing the story up until Ft. Trinity, is ‘non-canon’. So I can see the point you’re making.

Events run cyclically because it is an MMO however. Were it a single player RPG, Tequatl could only die once. You could only claim a fort once. So, I think it is meant to be a progression from Lv1 zones, through your story, through the dungeon story paths (some w/multiple explorable paths and some with only one), and to the 80 zones. After this, the LS picks up canonically.

Lost Shores was confirmed to be post Zhaitan death. LS that followed was also post Zhaitan’s death. So, we do know that there is a timeline. Assuming a player joined the game a month after Lost Shores, they would essentially be ‘in the past’ up until they caught up on the entire personal story and killed Zhaitan.

I think it’s more of an issue of proper exposition than anything else. There is no overarching timeline laid out in game for players to know what came before. In Guild Wars 1, you could complete Prophecies missions with an Elonan character. This is non-canon of course. Still, it’s just a design choice.

Perhaps the best solution would be to establish an in game timeline and display messages for missions/quests that tell the player that these events took place X [measure of time] ago.

Yes. That is one of two factors that heavily drove Mordremoth speculation.

Initially players discovered Teeth of Mordremoth in the CoE Alpha attack log. This, coupled with speculation about the ‘green zones’ of CoE, led to the belief there would be an earth dragon.

Until the Alpha connection, there was no name for this speculation. The Jotun observatory also hinted at the awakening of a new Dragon.

Your thoughts for a new dungeon

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Saint.5647

Saint.5647

Canonically, our players only complete the story mode of a dungeon once. The explorable paths vary. Some of them are canonically all completed, while others like CoE cannot be so. All of these dungeons are frozen in time. This isn’t a problem; that’s how MMOs work.

I’d just like to see new paths added to these dungeons. Read: Added and NOT taken away. Aetherpath would have been a great idea if it didn’t take away a TA path.

Adding new paths to the existing dungeons could help progress a few different story-lines. Not everything needs to be ‘the world will end’. There are some small to medium stories that can be told as well.

What happened with Adelbern’s sword? What’s left after the Howling king is dead? There is a lot of room to progress with some Ascalonian/GW1 lore in AC (and fan service).

Perhaps there is room for development in TA after Mordremoth’s awakening.

Of course I’d love to see more dungeons as we move Westward into Maguuma but the dungeons we have now could use some more love. It’s a big mistake to drive story forward in only one direction.

There needs to be one large, overarching plot. There also should be a few side plots that, while smaller, give the world some more depth (and are resolved fairly quickly). Since this game doesn’t have quests in the traditional manner.

in Lore

Saint.5647

I don’t think it makes it inconsistent. We’re the ‘Pact Commander’ and the ‘Hero of Shaemoor’ as well. In an MMO certain areas of a game are permanently frozen in time. The dungeons are one such example.

We are not “the” Pact Commander, we are “a” Pact Commander, that is why Trahearne is “the” General and not us.
‘Hero of Shaemoor’ is the same thing, there is a big chance that in your Personal Story you saw another player with you killing the Earth Elemental and he is also one more ‘Hero of Shaemoor’.

In GW1 you could run from AC to the Crystal Desert. Doing this fast forwarding through time and lore breaking as the dialogue at each location assumes a certain portion of the story complete.

At least in GW1 a message appeared telling that: “Events you see here happened in the past”, or something close to that.

I know that MMOs have that problem, but they could try to avoid those situations, in the Scarlet case, if the player had a fight with her and then Kasmeer finished her, it would be all fine, all the players could be there helping and in the future anyone could say “Kasmeer gave the final blow on Scarlet” making the story 100% plausible.

EDIT: Most players will like this ending, but the more “hardcore” lore players won’t be truly satisfied.

No. You’re incorrect on both counts.

“We also agreed that I would be Trahearne’s second in command with the rank of commander. -Personal Story Hero Book”
“For THE hero of Shaemoor? Done. -Logan Thackery”
“Ah, THE hero of Shaemoor returns! -Lord Faren”

You’re also incorrect about the GW1 ‘message’. Guild Wars missions in Nightfall and Factions did indicate that players were about to Experience events as they happened. “Running” zones was, for the most part, halted/gated by Factions and Nightfall.

Please re-read what I wrote above (and you’ve quoted) regarding running AC to CD in Prophecies. Still stands true.

Cheers.

The "B-Iconics"?

@Rod, I think you would enjoy Dragon Age a lot.

Perhaps the time between S1 and S2 could be spent fleshing these characters out more. What I would like to see are some side quests. Not everything has to be a ‘the world will end’ event. Perhaps Kasmeer and Marjory investigate corruption in DR. Perhaps Rox starts her own warband and enlists the Charr players’ help with finding members. Perhaps Braham tries to learn more about his mother and DE and then seeks to grow his own legend.

Quests like this could be very fun and also introduce a little bit more story alongside the Lore. I think they would work well with different dialogue for race-specific characters. No reason a Charr couldn’t help Marjory investigate corrupt Ministers but there could be different dialogue for a Human who had dealt with this in their PS already. Same could go for the Charr and the warband.

Exactly. The ‘Pact’ are all there helping. The orders are playing their separate roles in the LA effort. Think of the Pact more as the Avengers. They’re not always together, the individual orders often do their own thing until they’re all needed together.

Logistically, the running of the Pact has got to be pretty difficult. Given they’ve lost resources against Zhaitan and their Marshall is still in Orr post story, they’ve likely broken back down into their respective orders. It will likely take another dragon to assemble the Pact again.

Unanswered questions we hopefully get...

in Lore

Posted by: Saint.5647

Saint.5647

Maybe Mormedoth isn’t the “new” master, maybe. It’s somethign else. Like Abbadon even though he’s suppose to be dead.

Also who is the first “master” for there to be a new one? Lol

I’m still not 100% willing to write it off. Many did all predict the obvious Mordremoth outcome but for the sake of speculation, Abbaddon (if still somehow around), isn’t that much of a stretch to believe.

This isn’t the first time he has influenced the actions of mortals. He did so with the original Cataclysm of Orr and again with the fortune teller and Shiro in Factions. It’s a possibility.

The reason I’m not entirely ok with letting it go is because this is exactly his MO and we could have potentially had an Abbaddon related fractal. If you recall, the Thaumanova fractal served as a means to tell the player that Scarlet dabbled in dragon magic and was aware of the ley lines. If Anet did indeed have a story planned out, and were not winging it, the Abbaddon one would have had to give a similar exposition (without Scarlet in it).

It is very much like Abbaddon to influence someone to do something chaotic and very much against their character. While she does wake Mordremoth, it is possible that it is at Abbaddon’s behest and not Mordremoth’s.

Plus the addition of the Tormented weapons also keep me from discarding this theory.

In other forum I wrote before update that “I would hate if in the final battle against Scarlet, the player would be the one that kills her in an instanced area”, well … it happened just like the way I didn’t want.
Now all players that saw that cut-scene is THE slayer of Scarlet, that makes the story inconsistent, in the future how they will tell who killed Scarlet?

I don’t think it makes it inconsistent. We’re the ‘Pact Commander’ and the ‘Hero of Shaemoor’ as well. In an MMO certain areas of a game are permanently frozen in time. The dungeons are one such example. No matter how many paths they add (which I hope they do), the EXP 1-3 paths will always take place right after the story and before the next dungeon/slaying of Zhaitan. The player ‘canonically’ can only do the story of the dungeon, and one explorable path.

So for Scarlet’s death, it’s really only you and the B Iconics in the instance that spikes her. As someone pointed out on a different thread, if we really get down to it, only one hero of the game can exist. But it is an MMO and we need to bend slightly on that. The 1-80 zones of the game right now are all pre Zhaitan death zones. Southsun is not. Any newly added zones will be post Zhaitan and post Scarlet death. So, like in GW1, a player traveling zones (assuming they are not locked) will be traveling through time.

In GW1 you could run from AC to the Crystal Desert. Doing this fast forwarding through time and lore breaking as the dialogue at each location assumes a certain portion of the story complete.

Am I the only one that likes Scarlet?

I like the idea of Scarlet, I like that a lot. Not as big a fan of the implementation and pacing.

I thought Ceara was very interesting. I didn’t like Scarlet. She wears too many hats.

Wow easy….so hurtful

Glad she’s done. She was handled pretty poorly. Her end was nicely done though.

^ They will not likely make the Sylvari into dragon minions. This means that the character you chose is nothing more than a peon. A can of worms…I sincerely doubt they will open that.

They are probably going to be ‘easier corrupted’ than flesh/blood types. Similar to the risen having no Sylvari within their ranks….that said, it will be more for the sake of the Lore. The PC will likely not face corruption :P

Hawk, I agree with you up until your comment on WP. Indeed this is very doable and we’ve gotten close to a 6 min triple kill.

That said, if you’re Dead dead…WP back. If it automatically WPs you back, good. Seems Anet changed that for the better. A DPS drop from an actively alive player to rez a dead one (who is doing 0 DPS), is not smart.

Modremoth has the biggest army of any Elder Dragon upon awakening(Jormag had only minions in the Shiverpeaks, Zhaitan had only the Dead of Orr, Kralkatorrik had no army and Primordus had the Destroyers) which says something on how big a threat he is.

Well hold on now. That army was Scarlet’s. There’s nothing to indicate that all of those forces are going to obey Mordremoth now that she’s dead. It’s doubtful any of them even knew about the dragon; likely they’re all going their separate ways after this.

Plus I’ll bet you Mordy has his own minions to make just like all the other dragons.

Indeed. I don’t think Dragons care very much for offering the ‘carrot’ to their minions. It doesn’t appear that they want minions with much power for reasoning either (if the current Elder Dragons are any indication).

Mai Trin will likely withdraw her Aetherblades. It has been said already that they follow only out of fear. Out of all the factions, the Aetherblades have lost the least. They can still retreat to a new hide-out. It would be nice if they stayed as dynamic spawns in the world. Keeping Aetherblade (looting) events around would be nice. It would show they are still around (and can be used for later stories) and would give players blade shards.

The toxic Krait will likely die out. This faction of the Nightmare court may continue to serve Mordremoth though (depending on the direction they take with the nature of his corruption). The Dredge and Flame also have little reason to stick around. I doubt they would have any interest in serving a Dragon from whom they gain nothing except a life of servitude.

From a high pop server perspective (TC). Note: I did complete the event right at the launch and realize it has had some bug problems following.

What I think worked

  • No detrimental achievements:* Everything in this patch was goal oriented and didn’t encourage players to chose between helping the effort and AP
-Accessible final instance: The option to play the final story instance without having to complete the events. This was a good touch for folks who are not interested in open world content.
-Champ Mechanics: I had the good fortune of playing with a good group of players. Feedbacks, WoR, stability, etc… were all used and. I am happy to see that the variety of champions do seem to require more than ‘spam1 to win’.
-Knight Mechanics: A pretty fun fight that challenges players who are not used to dodging how to read tells and adapt. Buffs to make ranged combat relevant. Introduction and tutorial to light attunement system
-Holo, Active Play: Encouraged players to keep active play style. Facetank + 1 was not applicable in the Holo portion. Unique mechanics of each Holo encouraged players to play to their strengths. Reflects and FB worked very well on the elites spawned by Red. Conditions worked well on Blue.
-Cinematic: Dat ending doe. Great cinematic style.

Feel free to add pros or cons to this regarding anything in the patch.
