What will Scarlet find beneath LA?

I’m of the opinion that it’s the rumored spider god that predated Abaddon. Not a lot supporting that, I just feel that the way the Forsaken served the human gods in Guild Wars 1 and the way we find out in Guild Wars 2 that they were a race that stood against the Dragons before the current six gods arrived on Tyria… it makes me think that there was a circle of gods the Forsaken worshiped during the time of the previous Elder Dragons… possibly the story of those gods during the rise of the dragons explains how the Forsaken are called just that.

That would be cool, but I think those God were only datamined. The arachnid Gods have a visible presence in the realms of torment. Arachnea Plateu I think is an upturned spider. Still, they were never canon in the game (afaik). I just don’t expect to see much more with the Human Gods. Perhaps Mursaat and Forsaken can happen though.

From the wiki, on the size of Zhaitan. So 5 times would be quite large, but not an entire zone. Thinking of how much Tequatl takes up in its fight, Zhaitan would probably be that entire swamp or close to it, which isn’t a fifth of the map. I’d say it’s around 6 or 7% just from eyeballing the map. Regardless, something that size would be quite cool. But no overflows? Dear lord good luck with that many people.

I would rather he actually be smaller. I just think a fight against such a huge enemy would be rather ‘impersonal’. What are we going to do, claw at his feet? Having a boss so huge might push Anet towards another turret segment. I would rather all the Elder Dragon’s be roughly Zhaitan’s size. He’s large enough.

In an earlier post I talked about a revamp to the Zhaitan fight. I think a similar style of fight would work well for all the Elder Dragons.

ESO is really a below average game in every way. I’ve detailed a better post on this elsewhere but basically it’s a very lackluster game that doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

Many of the games like ESO, LOTRO, SWTOR, Rift would have been great games had they released instead of WoW. They didn’t though. They each try small tweaks to a gameplay style that is around 10 years old. ESO may get some players to start but I don’t think it has the longevity GW2 has; those players will be back.

The age of sub MMOs is over. Let alone moves like paywalled races at launch.

Yeah. I’m glad a lot of them work fake. Could you imagine the cleric AH staff spamming guardians who will now be using their spectral staff elite skill? I swear that I would find the highest location in the game and then jump of it if that would ever come true.

That Guard Elite really made me nearly hose all hope that the Devs could be in touch with the state of the game.

My first thought was: Really? Of all the things the Guardian class could use…they decided the players needed more spirit weapons? And a staff of all things? Why?

Saint.5647

I started the game recently and have been catching on the story via the wiki and guildies while doing the Lion’s Arch event. To be honest, Scarlet is like an amalgation of the most popular villain tropes which makes her seem not only unhinged but disjointed as well.

Even being with the game since launch, I tend to agree with you. Although lately they have made leaps and bounds worth of progress, she is still a lost cause in my book. The quicker they burry her, the faster they can move on to a more coherent story and villain.

Indeed, everything surrounding her has just been a big tropefest.

@blud: Yes…haha I couldn’t resist the reference though. The GW2 Anet doesn’t have many of the GW1 employees. I think the Story in GW1 was better but GW2 does have a lot of potential. It is somewhat community wide-agreed that the Personal Story (post orders) is very sloppy. The LS started with slow pacing and high potential for exposition but it was tied together by Scarlet and little to no lore-fitting exposition. As someone said, she just wasn’t a very good fit. A lot of their efforts went into forcing a puzzle piece where it didn’t belong.

Cheers and hope for a good Season 2!

Anyone else realize GW1 is the better series?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I still remember the day I happened to pick up GW1. That game was a pretty big part of my life. Back in the ‘glory days’ of GW1, it was a fantastic game. Not without its flaws but a great game nonetheless. It did some very unique things too.

I think GW2 is very different but also very unique and fun. It’s very easy to look back at years of GW1 with rose tinted glasses and forget all the negative aspects of the game. It’s easy to forget DCing and losing HOURS of progress in whatever content you were playing.

Overall, I don’t think GW2 will ever take the place of the memories I built with GW1, but it can certainly help make some new ones.

Well, on the topic of ‘wasting gold’ on BL chests, I have little use for gold in this game. I have been playing since launch and have yet to get a Precursor. I have enough gold, enough mats, enough everything I need. I have no interest in Ascended Armor until it provides a better stat bonus.

As it stands I enjoy gambling in BL chests. The only content I really play seriously in this game is dungeon clears. The boosters from the BL chests help there a bit but overall I just like opening chests and wondering what’s inside.

So yes, I just wanted to voice an opinion from this side of the fence. Anything I want in this game, I’ve gotten with Tokens, Relics, Commendations, or Gold….and there is nothing else I feel like outright buying. It’s a fun way to gamble if you’ve got the coin for it but you’re right…it doesn’t pay off quite that often. Still, I’ve gotten a few items that I’ve sold for hundreds of gold.

Saint.5647

Even if they didn’t ignore the warnings, who is to say that Lion’s Arch wouldn’t have ended up exactly as it is right now?

LA doesn’t have anti-aircraft technology, so even if they were to deploy some they’d need time to work on a prototype. There’s also no such thing as anti-portal technology, and we KNOW Scarlet likes portals.

I’m not about to say that the council was or was not taking steps to prepare for the attack, but the one thing they would have needed, they wouldn’t have had enough of. That thing is time.

No effort at all though? And LA should have no trouble getting AA technology. Pact forces use it against the Claw of Jormag in FG (even if you exclude the Zhaitan fight).

For the story’s sake, I think it makes more sense to stand behind a leadership that did try to mount a defense. Even if they didn’t have the proper time. Then we know that they tried but failed because they didn’t have enough time/money/etc… to stop a full aerial assault or an attack via portals.

New Heavy Profession Idea

Chronomancer would be the next class most likely. Anet even had concept art before the game came out apparently. Medium health pool most likely having similar concepts with mesmer such as instant blinks. Could have a mix of offensive and defensive group support similar to elementalists. Warrior playing the role of powerhouse tank guard as group support tank and chronomancer somewhere in the middle.

Chronomancer and everything from Utopia have long since been rolled up into EoTN and GW2. Dev interviews discuss this at length. You actually see influence of Chrono skills in Mesmer TW. I think there were more discussed that currently elude me.

They have been pretty adamant in saying that they’re happy with the current classes. The current classes have (between them) nearly everything from the classes GW1. While the Devs do go back on what they say sometimes, I currently agree with them. The classes in game are good. Anything extra would be a waste. There is no extra mechanic from GW1 or traditional MMOs that isn’t already in a class.

@Vaebrae: They have said that new weapons and weapon use between classes will be addressed. This may be the best way. The class you suggested is useless and provides nothing that other classes cannot provide much better. This isn’t a cut at you. It is just the harsh reality of trying to design and balance classes.

I have played the ESO beta, and gw2 blows out of the warer interms of gameplay.
I don’t know what else to say about it. The game play in gw2 just out does it in all aspects.

Unless Eso can make the hugest impact in mmo gaming ever seen, then it will fail to Guild Wars 2.
Specially if gw2 does an expansion type content.

Agreed. GW2 may have its flaws but it’s its own game. GW2 is very unique and sets a lot of new trends and standards (some of which ESO has tried to emulate in their PvP).

That said, ESO is a very bland game. Graphically it isn’t very impressive. The character models and texture leave much to be desired. I wasn’t impressed with the quest variety. It is an appropriate release for the early to mid 2000s. Too much has happened since then however. Fetch quests are not acceptable content in 2014. Paywall gated races are not acceptable content in 2014. The day of the sub-based MMO is over.

Even WoW has evolved to exist in a post WoW world. GW and GW2 each found their own niche. I think GW2 has permanently changed the MMO landscape. Games like Rift, Terra, LOTRO, SWTOR have all come and gone. ESO seems like just another in the pack of below average-average post WoW ‘clone’ MMOs, each bringing nothing new to the table.

And in general, most of those attacks had warning and preparation. This one did not. It had warning but the warnings weren’t acted upon. The Council got careless/overconfident, and they’ve paid for it.

What a strong shield arm you have. Read what you wrote up there. Maybe not what you meant to say.

Both Ellen and Evon have warned the counsel about the impending attack. It’s clear that they intentionally disregarded the safety of LA. Since according to the LS, Scarlet’s agenda has gone ‘to plan’ each step of the way, there was no reason for the counsel or anyone to be careless or overconfident. Regardless of your feelings on the quality/believability of the writing, Anet wants players to think that Scarlet is a force to be reckoned with. Why would the counsel disregard Ellen and Evon’s warnings?

To me this could mean a few things. The ideal scenario is that the counsel did indeed ignore the warnings for a reason. A political reason no doubt which could have a very cool/intriguing story to it.

My fear is that there is no such scenario. My fear is that they ignored the warnings simple because plot so that we could have yet another installment in LS.

I would be all for a LG regime change. A failure of this magnitude deserves no less. The leadership had all the information it needed yet it failed to act. It sounds like (with Evon & Heal-O-Tron) they are indeed addressing this though. Maybe there is indeed a reason that the LG didn’t act and perhaps we will get to see a plot with some intrigue.

ESO is a below average game in almost every way. It seems that in the race to copy from WoW’s success, new MMO launches forget what year they are currently launching in. ESO will fare as well as the other average MMOs that tried this as well.

I’m discussing more on the points of principle. Someone said earlier that most of the players in the game are casual speed runners. I would have to disagree based on my experienced. Most of the players I encountered were in PVT gear and off-meta setup.

The LFG has allowed for unfiltered access to a group. Once that can be addressed, problems and threads like this one will be a thing of the past. There will always be a need for quality control (or pace control).

^ Right. Maybe I’m wrong but I think from what we’ve been able to read, that the Dragons have certain spheres of influence. The Colin Jo insight leads us to believe that the Jungle Dragon is/will be active in Maguuma. No doubt ‘jungle dragon’ will likely have some influence over the corruptible plant life in the Jungle.

Hopefully we can see some aloes and stalkers again (GW1 fans). However, I don’t think Mordremoth is a plant. To reduce an Elder Dragon to ‘plant status’ would be a huge cut in power.

The fact that you posted this here is contrary to the objective of your post.
Also, lose the point about saying “play how you want” players are looking to be carried. Leeching players exist on both sides

How do you arrive at the conclusion that a full meta, experienced player is leeching? We’re not talking about some rook who threw on Zerk armor and every signet he could find on his Warrior; not someone who face-tanks hits while hoping to out DPS.

How does a good meta player leech? They don’t. Any PuG they happen to be a part of, is always better for it.

ESO will have it’s own following and fanbase etc but it’s not that one that Anet have to worry about. Its Wildstar.

Neither of those games are a concern imo. As a huge Elder Scrolls fan, I was deeply disappointed by ESO. Perhaps they thought they were releasing and MMO in 2001….

Wildstar just seems like a “WoW in Space” game and doesn’t feel very interesting to me. I am sure it will interest some folks but it doesn’t seem to pack an exciting factor that can sway people to it. There is no large IP to bring a loyal following either. I think GW2 will keep the seat at the head of the table.

Wildstar seems like a very average game and ESO is quite below average. WoW did great things in its time. Now, trying to do that will leave you with LOTRO, Rift, etc…

People for stacking and skipping don’t discredit those who are against it.

Yes they do. People fling kitten at each other from both sides; neither party is innocent in the slightest.

Not really, this is because when non-stackers enter a party of stackers, they get kicked. Non-stacking/skipping parties are so rare that it is unlikely that a stacker will end up in one, and once he’s a minority, he’ll simply leave.

However, if by discrediting you mean telling people in the forums how inefficient their methods are, then you’re kinda right, but that only occurs as a result of the endless amount of threads moaning about stacking/skipping.

No, they develop a massive superiority complex because the majority of them can’t stand the fact that there’s another side to the coin that has just as much right to their own opinion and result to slandering and trashing each other. It’s quite like a pair of political parties, really. Both always insist that the other is wrong and that they know exactly what is best for everyone else.

I don’t think that’s the case. I speak for myself but I think also many of the people I play with. It’s not that I can’t stand that “there’s another side to the coin”. Contrary to what the QQ threads would imply, meta players never want to play with “the other side of the coin”.

I made the mistake of trying to pug when my guild was unavailable. A few minutes into LFG and many kicks later, the angry messages convinced me it was time to call it quits and just wait until I had guildies. I don’t care if you think your PVT guardian is awesome. I don’t care if you think 25 AR is enough. I don’t care if you think gear check is ridiculous.

I play meta and I’ve played non-meta. I have never had a meta player come try to force their gameplay upon me. The trash players on the other hand? Always rude, always offensive. What gives you the right to be in my party if you don’t care about the way we do business?

Just something to think about. Enough with these “I’m the victim” threads.

‘d be sweet, but i’m afraid the casuals would go up in arms if this were to be released.

also this HP floater that was flying around in the forum earlier was amazing.

Perhaps a clever approach to this would be to make it toggle-able. Add in DPS meter along with some other ones that would appease the casuals. They can tout their toughness meters or healing meters and have some arbitrary number by their name so they don’t feel inadequate.

I think that would be the best way to go about implementing this because I agree that it would be an awesome addition to the game. The ATK has always been a trash indicator and external calculators can be a hassle especially in dealing with all the multiplicative effects.

I think folks are getting caught up on AP not being 100% effective at vetting PuGs. The thing is, nothing will tell you with 100% certainty who is good, and who isn’t. You will have 500AP studs and 12,000 AP duds.

However, as someone said, it’s the best first glance assessment you can make. If you care to build a good party, you should be asking for trait spread and general understanding of the encounter. You should be gear checking to make sure they are running appropriate gear.

Now, if you don’t want to do all of that for some reason, yet you still want to gate the group, AP is the default fallback. Why? Because it’s easily visible and for nearly all intents and purposes tell you roughly how much content the player has completed. They may never have touched dungeons before but that’s the gamble you take in using AP. You use it on the hope that out of all the content they’ve done to earn X,000 AP, somewhere along the line….they learned how to play the game.

Age doesn’t tell you about a person’s life experience. There are children who have experienced more hardship than some elderly. Generally though, you can assume that a 70 year old will have more experience with handling stress than a 10 year old. Not always true, but it’s the assumption to make if you intend to judge someone on just their age.

Same to be said of AP. If you want a quick gauge, then you can think that someone with 10,000k AP has had more time and chances to learn how to play the game and their class than someone with 500. If you want to know more, then demand more of your team.

Actually Kraits never worked alongside another race before. Scarlet was the first non-krait that they ever worked with.

From official wiki:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Krait

“These intelligent creatures are vicious and xenophobic, attacking and enslaving all other species on sight.

“They believe other, lesser races have nothing to offer them, so the krait never bother to communicate with them. Never beaten, they are convinced that they are blessed and elevated: the superior species in the world. "

Back to topic:

So by lore, it is easier for Scarlet to “sweet talk” the Pact into joining her, than sweet talking the Kraits into joining her.

Read what I just wrote again. Take it in. :P

Why is that? Well the Pact (e.g. me and you) will at least give her 5 minutes to listen to what she have to say. The Kraits will try to enslave Scarlet on sight. That’s how the lore was set up.

So for this part of the story to make any sense, the story writer need to prove that Scarlet have god like “sweet talking” abilities to get the Kraits into joining her.

Problem is, we have never seen this “sweet talking” ability of Scarlet. Every time we see Scarlet she appeared as an insane chick. All her underlings are more serious than her. Aetherblade flat out said they follow her because they are afraid of her (e.g. not sweet talking).

If the writer want to prove that Scarlet is a sweet talker, they have to prove it. And so far, they did zero proving.

As for obelisks, LOL ok think about it. Scarlet stole your obelisk from your old home. Would you work for her? No!!! You will try to kill Scarlet and take the obelisk back from her. Its simple logic.

And Krait themselves were forced out of their old homes by the elder sea dragon. On land, they were attacked by Zhaitan’s risen army. So why would they help Scarlet raise the elder jungle dragon in LA?

Right. It is too convenient. These sorts of Lore breaks to accommodate the plot detract from the value of the story being told. If the story cannot be told within the boundaries of the Lore, perhaps it needs to be rethought and rewritten.

As Chips said, there has been nothing in game to suggest Scarlet is a sweet talker capable of raising such alliances. A character more akin to Frank Underwood would have been more interesting in the game. Someone who could craft alliances and trick factions into working together. Someone who wouldn’t bat an eye at betraying any of them to achieve their own goals.

Perhaps even more interesting would have been Ellen/or Evon (whoever would have won the election) allowing Scarlet to keep pestering the players and causing minor havoc. This would give Ellen (in our case) the grounds and opportunity to build alliances in secret. All to lead to the attack on LA where she uses the ineptitude of the Lionguard and Captain’s Counsel to call for a vote of wartime leadership.

Ellen could thank the player for being integral to her plan and offer him/her a place beside her. The player of course refuses and asks what is to be done about Scarlet. She says that Scarlet was never more than a mad dog let off its chain and a loud distraction to keep Tyria looking in all the wrong places. Players defeat Scarlet, Kiel individually crushes the factions and makes the new, reformed LG look powerful and resolute. She again asks you to reconsider your stance. The player again refuses and she says that she does not forget a favor but she will not ask a third time. The player parts ways and boom. Now you have a new political/military force in LA that isn’t some black and white enemy.

I’m getting the feeling that players understand this game more than devs sadly… I wish good future to this game and don’t want to give it up… something has to be done.
