“Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

+1 for /inspect

i don’t want it so i can judge you based on your gear, as your gear only tells a small part of the story.

It would be nice to be able to tailor my gear and skills to the gear of my teammates, without having to bother them to ping everything.

and i personally don’t have every skin memorized and dont want to alt+tab to dulfy every time i see a shiny i don’t recognize.

lastly, I understand that it is a widely held belief that /inspect promotes elitism, but please realize that /inspect can be a very useful tool, like the chat window or /join, but also has the potential for abuse, like a chat window or /join. Just because a tool can be abused doesn’t mean we should outright deny access to it.

Don’t let the small minority of jerk players ruin it for the rest of us. I’m sure they could add a “block inspect” feature or something to satisfy you guys that would prefer to not interact with other people in a multiplayer game.

I love these threads. I always get to see who the guys are that just can’t take it.

I knew a guy on a NWN2 rp server that quit the game after losing a duel. He loved his character roleplayed him as a bad kitten seasoned warrior and just couldn’t take it that he got beat down in seconds. These people remind me of that guy. They are still feeling that beating or afraid it might happen. HILARIOUS!!!

Welcome to why you have no support from your opposition. Try empathy, I hear it works wonders.

Opposition? I’m not in a debate about this. I have absolutely no concern for peoples opinions about a feature that can be turned to auto-decline. To me they are just whining for the sake of it.

I’m about 80% sure dueling will be implemented one day. Too many people want it. Look at the thread.

I also think that is will be implemented at some point.

My only concern, is it will be gutted due to complaints on the forums, like when the half-baked combat logs and parsing were added for SWTOR in an attempt to satisfy the combat data crowd and the anti-combat data crowd.

And when that happens, no one is happy. The people that really want it are not happy because the content is broken beyond repair. And the people that don’t want it still have whatever issues they had with it in the first place.

Actually nothing changed for the people that didn’t want combat logs, since they didn’t use the data anyway. That’s why i have an issue with people that advocate against tools they don’t plan on using.

edit; unless you consider “the world wasn’t overrun with elitists” a change for the anti-combat data crowd.

You should go to LA and ask mapchat who wants duels in the game, that would provide a more representative sample than the same 30 people that show up every time a duel thread is started.

In my experience from LA chatter, most people are either in favor of it, or want to bang my mom. Come to think of it, maybe LA isn’t the best sample…

Duels would be awesome. Just thought i would show my support before this is merged into the suggestions forum.

This thread pops up every so often and it’s good to see more supporters this time around. However, i do recognize a lot of the same naysayers from the previous duel threads advocating against it without any supporting argument.

They should just have a vote for duels in game like the Kiel vs Gnashblade. Better indicator of player feelings than the small % of us that lurk the forums.

What kind of supporting argument would you like? Would I like dueling in the game? No. Why do I need to support that? Would you like dueling? Yes. What more do you need to support this? It’s very cut and dry.

I’ve already stated my opinion as to why already however above, it has just as much as weight as any reason in favor of it. Personally I would prefer the game had no PvP at all, but that’s me.

I do however respect you desire for it. If they implement I will be happy for those who wanted it. I’ll be disappointed of course but c’est la vie.

I would prefer a supporting argument of the reasonable persuasion. I would consider a reasonable objection would be if something implemented actually impeded your ability to play.

It is very easy to avoid duels if you wanted to, at least, if my experience with duels in other games is a predictor of anything.

Considering we know nothing about if/how it would be implemented, it’s hard to argue “i’ll get duel spammed” or “people will duel troll the TP” because we don’t know what safeguards will be in place to prevent abuse, which i imagine they will.

But saying no to duels “becuase i don’t like it” would be the same as if i said they shouldn’t add any more jumping puzzles “becuase i dont like it.” I won’t advocate against an area of gameplay i don’t personally prefer when it doesn’t effect me.

I don’t think you went back and read my original post I was referring to. Although “I don’t like it” is a valid reason if in fact someone does not like it. However what I was talking about is what it breeds. It begets the “nerf X class” because I got killed by them in 1v1. Which begets the argument “the game isn’t balanced around 1v1!”. Then that argument will go around for a while. Then we’ll start seeing classes being “balanced” around these complaints. Then that class you loved playing so much is no longer the same as it used to be. You are frustrated because you spent all your laurels on the class, you have your legendary on that character but not you are just not enjoying it anymore and you either pick up a new class or give up.

I am not exaggerating, I have seen it happen time and time again. If you want to argue that it won’t, that’s fine, but we will never see eye to eye on this point. I’ve watched it happen Since EQ1 when I used to play nothing but PvP, through 30 or so MMO’s since where I no longer touch PvP.

So when you ask for justified reasons, I think I have one.

i guess you’re right, in that case. 1v1 balance is never mentioned, and there is most certainly not a post on the front page of general about 1v1 class balance. Come to think of it, i have never considered measuring 1 classes abilities against another, since there is currently no way to battle someone 1v1.

Yea, that’s pretty much where I was going with that. At least Vayne and a couple others wanted compromise. I don’t see what the big deal is if that list is met.

To be fair even if nothing on the list was met it wouldn’t be a big deal.

Duelist in every game relegate themselves to an area (generally easily accessible) but away from the masses because they don’t want to deal with “lag” issues.

Dueling griefing is not and has not been a major problem in any MMO.

That doesn’t mean it wont happen, people can be jerks but a person that challenges you to a duel and starts to harass you is not different than a person that harasses you for dying in your fractal run, or the mesmer that portal bombs a chest or other event locations, or the musical instrument griefing, or the food table spam that has become so popular recently.

The idea of not adding content because someone may be a jerk to someone else because of it is silly. Sure some people may have been slightly inconvenienced because of the musical instruments but look now, Anet fixed the griefing, People who like to play their music can, and people who care less can continue to care less.

QFT and inb4 “not true, a duel spammer followed me for months! Literally MONTHS! Just requesting duels!! The game was literally unplayable!! this is why duels shouldn’t be in GW2!”

I’m sorry for that one time in WoW someone duel spammed you. That must’ve been a traumatic experience. You’re a hero just for getting out of bed in the morning.

This may have come off as rude, but i have had a lot of experience with MMOs and the amount of duel spam you encounter is not as frequent as these forums would lead you to believe. In fact, it really doesn’t happen outside of low-levels zones, where people that just bought the game and have no real intention of playing it find amusement in harassing people.

It was extremely rude but it fits in with the same mentality of those that would spam “duel” at you in the game, following you around and constantly challenge you. It is the same rudeness that I have seen not only in WoW but in more MMOs then you may think as I have been playing online MMOs since the first 3 major ones were released. Asherons’ Call, Everquest and Ultima Online. Prior to that I was in script based online games via bbs systems and public dialports. So if you wish to compare experiences with MMOs and the subject at hand I will put my experience up against yours any day of the week.

I guess my rude post was an unsubtle attempt at saying “if your biggest problem is duel spams then you got it going pretty well.”

I don’t think it’s the same mentality as duel spammers because it is not my objective to annoy you for my own kicks. I will agree that “duel spammers” is an issue, but i will also say that it is overblown and exaggerated, and in the big picture won’t ruin the game for you.

I know it’s hard to understand if you don’t want to duel, but adding duels would add significantly more to the game for me than duel spammers would take away from it.

I’m sorry for that one time in WoW someone duel spammed you. That must’ve been a traumatic experience. You’re a hero just for getting out of bed in the morning.

That being said, considering there is no information about dueling in this game, it’s just as safe to assume that they would add safeguards to prevent your jimmies from getting rustled (aka auto-block requests, no dueling in towns, etc).

This may have come off as rude, but i have had a lot of experience with MMOs and the amount of duel spam you encounter is not as frequent as these forums would lead you to believe. For what it’s worth, in my opinion, i don’t believe the horrendous act of duel spamming is so severe that it warrants not-including duels at all. I mean, the potential is already there for people to spam /map chat but we live with the risks everyday, and when people do troll it, we pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and carry on with our lives.

Somewhere in a cold dark corner the point weeps softly, realizing it has been missed.

Here’s the simplest take on it. Why add a potential means of griefing where none exists or is needed?

i addressed the point to your post like 4 times already.

there is tons of potential for griefing in this game. If we based every addition to this game based on potential for griefing nothing would ever get added. Don’t let the worst of the worst dictate what us well-meaning players can and can’t have in game.

I would prefer:
>target random person in my proximity
>challenge to duel
>oppenent declines and i alt-tab to gw2lfg for another cof run

I hate this in other games and I would hate it here. Nothing worse then some L33T following you around spamming a duel challenge at you and if you refuse they start whispering you and calling you “chicken”. If you want to duel go to an area designated for dueling. I promise I will not go there!

If you lose a 1v1 he was more skilled regardless of build/balance.

The reason being he chose to engage the 1v1 that he knew he could win, whereas you chose to engage a 1v1 where you didn’t know if you would win, or thought you couldn’t win.

tl;dr, don’t make stupid decisions.

You say that, but if you truly think there’s no 1v1 imbalance then I wonder how much you actually pvp.

if you pvp a lot and think there is no 1v1 balance then maybe your either really good or really bad.

I would object to this system simply because it could be used to annoy others with unwanted duel requests.

However, a “Looking For Duels” flag would remedy this (you can only request duels with other flagged players). Or an auto-decline enabled by default for players unless they wish to duel and actively choose to turn it off.

The chat box and map chat could easily be used to annoy others, yet we’ve all managed to live with the risk, despite the occasionally map chat trolls.

I think you could live with some unwanted duel requests. And i would like to imagine they would have /ignore or something to prevent this.

if you think this is acceptable for duels then i bet you also think GvG and LFG are both where they need to be. I mean, we have viable work-arounds, why even add these things if people can do it already?

I think it could be more than acceptable. As for GvG, I’m not a fan of GvG on the WvW maps. I do think an sPvP “open field” style map would be a viable solution for that personally, with a means for guilds from cross-servers to join together and have exclusive access. No timer, no score, no “rules” or points of capture, just a big open field and a tall, scantily clad Norn woman with a large flag that she waves to begin the battle.

Yeah but you can already do GvG in game so why change anything? You may have to organize some people yourself, and play on a map you don’t personally prefer, so it’s fine right?

cuz that’s what your saying about dueling :P

i have an elementalist that has seen nerfs for balance changes very frequently. If that’s not trying then i don’t know what you want.

That’s good, but it should happen for every class.

I was just using eles as an example, cuz they’ve seemingly got the hardest nerfs.

But, just off the top of my head, rangers and necros recently got buffs.

if there were never any class changes i would agree they ignore balance, but since they adjust the classes almost every patch this is faaaaar from the case.

Anyone taking advantage of the tools available now to duel with your friends, maybe have tournaments and the like? Just curious.

Oh, for those that don’t know what I mean, it’s actually fairly simple if there’s a group of you that wish to duel each other. At least, in concept, you all can do the work yourself. Allow me to elaborate.

1. Find a group of like-minded duelists.
2. Form a guild together. Give it a witty name, mayby tag it [DUEL], or call it Fight Club [HUSH] or something.
3. Organize Fight Nights.
4. Have everyone, based on the number of people, chip in gold to buy gems to buy a personal sPvP server.
5. Split up into teams, with the intent of being on the opposite team of the person you’re going to duel. Enter the arena, find your opponent, have the duel.

If you’re organized on TS, you can even swap to multiple opponents as fights are won/lost. Keep a score board, fraps or livestream it, just have fun. You can even donate more than the cost of the server for prize money.

Yes, it’s not open world challenging… that’s not going to happen in a cooperative PvE environment, and it shouldn’t. But you can duel. All you have to do is organize it.

if you think this is acceptable for duels then i bet you also think GvG and LFG are both where they need to be. I mean, we have viable work-arounds, why even add these things if people can do it already?

Whats the excuse for not giving mesmers a much needed 25% movement speed increase?

Im willing to sacrifice the 10% boon passive for said passive. At least make it usable only in PvE, or out of combat (and only getting on combat when YOU hit something, not when a random skritt throws something at you)

Anet?

I think it’s fair to give mesmer’s access to swiftness, on the same level as other classes (afaik other classes have ways to regularly expedite movement).

I don’t really see what portals have to do with it. The only reason i can see being against it is more because it would make a mesmer impossible to kill. drop clone, drop clone, stealth, swiftness and cheese it lol It would be like fighting a thief that also has clones.

I would say make it out-of-combat swiftness, like with my Ele. I switch between weapons when running around WvW (out of combat) to maintain swiftness instead of using traits or utility skills.

5. Even the game itself dislikes it.
It literally breaks the game in that spot. It highlights all of the worst aspects of the current game engine and mechanics by culling out mobs and spells (getting instagibbed by an invisible AoE from an invisible Champion is always fun) and requiring full teams of berserker-only high dps characters just to get any significant amount of loot at all.

I really don’t care how people collect their gold, but this is the part that gets me. The only challenge is to try to tag the mobs before they die, which, to be honest is pretty difficult. And that’s if they’re not invisible. I found myself getting a chest from maybe 1/3 champs.

If the new, trendy thing to do in the game is flock to an event that is this obviously broken, regardless of whether or not it is an exploit, something is not right.

Kiel won because she gave a bit lower wp cost for a month. Its about the equivalent of voting in a President because he’s going to lower taxi fares for a month.

This made me laugh. Why? Because it’s sad, but true.

And to those who will be WPing a lot more since it’s a little cheaper, do realize that you negate the discount with overuse of the WP. <puts on straw hat> It’s like saying “Why am I gaining weight? I drank 10 of those weight loss shakes yesterday!”

haha, yes! I have had to grapple with my perception of the new WPs costs vs their actual reduced value. “Time to go to LA. I could port to mysts then port to LA, but why do that when i have reduced WP costs!!”

The reality is—maintain the same WP behaviors you had before Kiel won, then you may save some money.

I never knew using stats that buff yourself and don’t help your team weren’t selfish.

Honestly it just comes down to playing with like-minded people.

You could sacrifice all your defensive gear for zerker gear and just be bad at dodging. At this point you would be better alive and doing poor damage than being dead and doing no damage.

But more importantly, you are better suited for a group at your skill level where everyone sucks at dodging, lol.

What’s up with all the crying on the forums lately that zerker gear is practically required now? I’ve never used it and I’ve quite successful at every aspect of the game I play.

What am I missing here? Are these all people trying to farm CoF and being rejected? I can’t imagine anywhere else in the game, PvE, where anyone would really care all that much what your character build is like. I guess some people might not want failed dungeon parties, but there are plenty of viable builds for dungeons so unless people were farming they shouldn’t care.

Is this whole crying about zerker thing on the forums lately really about farming CoF 1?

It’s harder to build zerker and then play with a non zerker group. The faster your group is dropping bosses, the less likely you are to miss one of your dodges. The longer the boss fights are, the more you have to dodge, and the probability that you will miss a dodge increases over time.

At the same time, you have people that are just cool with clearing content, and other people that strive to optimize and progress their play. As you get better and more comfortable with content, the less you need to rely on stats like vita/toughness because most damage can be mitigated before stats even come into play (dodge, block, reflect, etc).

So, the less you need to rely on defensive stats, the more you can invest in damage. But then you get back to the issue in my first paragraph, where difficulty is effected by group make-up, aka zerker group vs non-zerker group.

A zerker in a non zerker group gets dropped frequently because after spending X amount of time on a boss fight you finally miss a dodge. And a non-zerker in a zerker group is essentially carried because his damage doesn’t compare to his teammates, who depend on dropping their boss asap.

i’ve noticed the more i play and the better and more comfortable i get with my characters, the more i find myself trying to push my damage higher and consequently dropping gear with vita and toughness.

As long as most danger can just be dodged, blocked, and avoided without relying on stats to mitigate the damage, i don’t see the point in investing in stats that don’t increase damage.

Another thing i’ve noticed, especially when my builds get progressive glassier, is when i run with a lower dps group, the fights take longer and the chance i might miss my dodges increases by a lot. So, while i may not get dropped in a fight that takes 3 minutes, chances are i’ll get dropped in a fight that takes 8 minutes.

So, if you build for damage, you are more successful running with other people that build the same, since the fights tend to be a lot shorter. If everyone stacks vita and toughness, you are better equipped to withstand the longer fights.

Otherwise, good thought OP. I never really considered how the mindset behind the elimination of MF is very similar to the DPS only mindset.

The Role of Thief in WvW

Thief’s combat efficacy resides in 1v1. We can take that for what it is. I merely attempted to demonstrate the application of thief’s niche to the broakitten icture of WvW.

I’m still waiting for a rational answer to my question above regarding individual skill in a zerg because I’m confused. I’m struggling to see the individual contribution any class brings to the table vis a vis wvw. Collectively, you make one solid group. Individually, you have disadvatages. The reverse is true for thief. That’s all I’m saying.

Individual skill is diffused in a zerg setting, but you could argue in an even Zerg v zerg, the zerg with the most skilled individuals will come out on top.

Personally, I enjoy rolling with the zerg on my thief. I know blast finishers and stealth rezes don’t create a strong argument, but it always seems clutch in practice.

Recently, i’ve taken a liking to immobilizing stragglers from enemy zergs. Since i’m faster than most players, i like to chop that one up to a contribution.

And the other night, i helped with a zerg push by rushing the enemy zerg by myself, and shadowstepping back to my zerg. As the enemies jumped on the chance to gank me, they were caught out of position by my zerg and we ended up taking the tower.

Does anyone else feel that gw2 is imbalanced?

I’ve built my ele as a bunker and now as lightening hammer dps. I used to be extremely tanky and now i sacrificed that for a lot of dmg. I can give you advice if you think that would help, but no, i don’t think it’s a balance issue.

If i lose a fight, i feel like i’m losing to a better player, not a stronger class.

Why is GW2 combat log so bad?

I’ve ever seen a game with such a large gap between potential and execution.

Star Wars: The Old Republic comes to mind. Or was it management in their case?

haha, i almost posted the same thing.

SWTOR didn’t even have a combat log to begin with. They added a combat log and a way to export the data into a 3rd party program, which is not a dps meter but it’s better than nothing. If SWTOR can do it then i’d really like to thing gw2 could muster something similar.

I came back to this thread to make a suggestion that I think would remove several of the problems people have with the side effects of the duel going on.

Instead, I find this:

dueling would be sweet. But too many people in this game cant be bothered to interact with others and would prefer it to be a single player game under the veil of MMO.

All the arguments against dueling can be attributed to carebears, who’s roots can be traced back to that one time an undead rogue ganked them in STV and now they get PTSD flashbacks whenever confronted with any form of competition in an MMO.

It’s sad but it seems people would rather play with each other less and just spend money on a cash shop in order to also play the game less.

If THIS is the kind of stuff we’re getting when the pro-duelers are trying to put their best foot forward, then it’s clear they’ll be total kitten-sphincters should dueling ever go live. This isn’t the first such insult in the thread, either.

Change my vote to a very strong “NO” to the idea. If they’re not staying civil here when they need to make a good impression, there’s no hope they’ll behave when they’ve gotten what they wanted.

I’m flattered you think i’m a pro dueler. I would love to hear your suggestion that my incendiary post prevented you from providing for us. And i apologize for that one time in WoW someone sent a multiple duel requests even though it was obvious you didn’t want to duel. I know it was probably a harrowing experience.

Imagine going around to explore and see all the particles and random duels happening around… not a pretty sight.

I agree. Dead open world zones should stay dead.

Again there is not yet a valid argument to not have a duel system.

actually, this thread is full of them, you just refuse to recognize any.

I will make you a list of the arguments you mention:

1.- I dont want a guy asking to duel while iam doing my archives

  • Answer: Auto decline duel function.

2.- I dont want to listen a guy calling me a coward because i decline a duel.
*Answer: Block messages from him. there is a lot of trash talk already, even in WvW with dances and laughing animations.

3.- There is no balance for 1v1 dueling.
*Answer: The game right know is well balanced (is not suppous never to be a balance between 1v1, it depends of the profession and the build to counter).

Also it is just a duel, you will not lose anything!! is just to have fun and test build with ur friend and guild members.

4.- There will be QQ in the forum for the balance in dueling.
*Answer: there is already a lot of QQ nerf this nerf that post. It is a duel again, if you accpet to duel is because you want, and dont care if you lose.

All of this arguments has no base and are incredible selfish.

Again being an objective person . . . . give a a real reason we dont have a duel system like almost every good MMO in the market.

You’re not being objective…you’re being subjective. Even just the comment add dueling like all good MMOs, what if people like me don’t like MMOs at all, and what if dueling is part of what we don’t like about those MMOs. And what if the reason we don’t like dueling is because it’s inviting people to misbehave.

You don’t give ammunition to certain types of people and expect them not to use it. I admit my opinion on this is entirely subjective.

Yours is too.

He’s trying to be reasonable.

And what if the reason we don’t like dueling is because it’s inviting people to misbehave.

This seems unreasonable.

Glyph of Elemental vs Asura D-series Golem

in Elementalist

Scrambles.2604

It really depends on the situation. I just started messing around with the D-Series Golem on my Thief, and the bubble shield it provides can be clutch in the right situation.

“Shield bubble – Creates a shield that reflects projectiles around the initial location of the golem. Lasts for 5 or 6 seconds and has a 20 second cooldown.”

The golem creates the bubble almost immediately when you summon him, so take advantage of the bubble and forget about him.

If you don’t need to block projectiles, then go with Glyph of Elemental.

Will elementalists ever have to give WXP?

Scrambles.2604

It sounds like a bug. If you usually get WXP for stomping someone, and you don’t get it for stomping an Ele that just vape formed, then it sounds like a bug.

But go ahead and blame Ele’s for “deciding” to deny you WXP.

NPR story on reward-based marketing/gameplay

Haha. I caught a little bit of this, and GW2 was the first thing i could think of. When they were talking about the power of “unexpected rewards” vs “expected rewards” i couldn’t help but think about how many rewards in this game are RNG and hard to anticipate receiving.

edit;

""An unexpected reward has much more power than one that is regular in driving behavior," says Nora Volkow, the head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “This has been known for a very long time.”

More than 60 years ago, the famous American psychologist B.F. Skinner demonstrated that unpredictable rewards created obsessive behavior in lab rats. The rats would click and click and click again on a bar, hoping to trigger a random reward.

“We are not mad scientists trying to figure out unexpected reward systems that Skinner predicated in theories decades ago; that’s not us,” Uber’s Kalanick says.

Still, random reward structures are built, sometimes unintentionally, into many of the technologies we use everyday."

Please change it back.

Was there any complain that made this change? Whose idea was it?

I believe people were complaining about the flute not being able to play the same note twice in succession. While it is awesome they moved to fix it so quickly, i wish they had taken their time and been a bit more thorough, or maybe tried to play a few songs on the flute before implementing it, haha.

I’ve been extra lazy recently and can’t be bothered to use the mysts > LA work around. I just fork out the extra silver and WP there.

While i don’t expect anet will take steps to fix this, a vote for Kiel will lessen the burden for lazy people like myself. #UnsolicitedKielPropoganda
