That stealth nurf you've all been calling for

A Sorry, there’s a reason why no one calls a thief broken in sPvP and broken in WvW.

So with culling fixed in this update as well, you agree that this nerf to THF is going to far right? Because it will be just like sPVP.

There are a lot of good thieves in s/tpvp. The near constant invis spam was insanely strong, especially when you can trait to regen health (a regen skill that stacks with the regen boon mind you), and remove conditions while in stealth. I would bring glass cannons to near death, then they disappear for 4+ seconds between actual stealth and culling, and finally reappear with full health and all conditions gone. Going 4 seconds between invis pops isn’t the ‘class breaker’ people are making it out to be. You have evades and dodges for a reason.

What? Now people actually have to be smart about using stealth skills, in both 1v1 and zvz combat? Worst. Change. Ever.

That’s like, 90% of thieves in WvW that are going to roll rangers now. pew pew pew is the next big thing.

Or Mesmer. Either way whatever the next flavor of the month class the bads flee to will make for easy badges. Easier than getting badges from invis spamming thieves anyway.

Noob question about class/race

in Norn

Posted by: Setun.4368

Setun.4368

Race / class combo doesn’t matter at all in pvp. Only thing that has any influence is your skill with the class vs other peoples skill, and the build you choose to roll with. I noticed a ton of people roll Asuras under the premise that they’re harder to see or some jazz when pvping, but I haven’t had a problem spotting them and pounding them into dust lol. I will say that the snow leopard racial elite form is mega sexy. Free invis and a 1800 meter sprint that’s insanely fast is fantastic.

Matter of fact I recall watching a video where a Norn elementalist would invis sprint to a target in snow leopard form, knock them down with the charge, switch back to normal form and utterly blow up her target. I can’t find the exact video to save my life, but it was pretty awesome to watch!

Why repair costs? And why random mobs!?

in WvW

Setun.4368

Honestly I prefer having the random mobs everywhere. As a Guardian I have to target mobs to use my blinks skills (super lame, but I work with what I got) when traveling, engaging if I can’t target a PC, or making a quick escape. Also in solo / small group situations using the NPCs around you to your advantage is just another tactic of PVP itself. You’re utilizing the environment around you to your advantage. Also armor costs when you die will hopefully make you learn to be more aware of your surroundings / map awareness if you keep running into large groups of people.

The learning curve is high, really high,

I admit we got some serious issues, our trait tree is a example,

Anyway the necro is in a good place right now,

The play stile is reactive, that means you are always acting acording your oponent,

This play stile is always, in any game and any place the hardest to master, because you don’t have a plan, you don’t have a combo, you don’t have the iniciative, you need to think fast and react even faster,

Plus this play stile, in any game is the less popular, because you need to use your brain instead hitting like a maniac your keyboard, (some people even say there’s a class you can play with a mouse and one key, the number “2”),

Those would be greatsword using warriors, and d/d thieves spamming their ’2’s like it’s going out of style. Those players are also extreme bads. =)

Guardian 1h Sword - Needs Love

Setun.4368

To follow up, (I was busy) I think the one thing sword could use is SOME kind of defensive boost and/or a symbol. It has practically no group synergy, which is really blah for a class that is supposed to be largely group support based. In the area of lacking or not lacking, I think it may depend too much on synergy with Justice to be truly viable without a torch in the off hand to go with it. BUT it does work really well that way.

Anyone on your group / wvw team can run behind your sword #3 if they’re being hit by projectiles and it’ll block it. Not quite as easily effective as some of the other utilities, but it is possible to do.

Setun.4368

Zeal is pretty poor I would say. It is a fairly poor skill as well doesnt give much or help in anyway, combined with being possibly the worst tree makes it seem a little pointless. However with a possible speed increase trait it may make Zeal an appealing tree.

10% increased damage to burning targets (which can essentially upkeep 90% of the time), and immobilizing enemies grants 5 stacks of vulnerability are awesome trait lines.

Setun.4368

This seems viable, but are you sure about the end result? Symbolic power is only a 10% increase in symbol damage. And missing out on the valor line is missing out on 30% critical damage. Which is effectively +30% damage, 50% of the time. Plus no altruistic healing, or beefy Resolve. Healing from symbols isnt that great if I can remember.

Sounds correct from my experience, the thread is about max DPS not healing or support roles. Hammer with no traits does more damage than greatsword with no traits so it’s not a stretch to imagine it’s higher when you buff the symbol too.

Think so? Whenever I use my hammer I just feel so weak, I mainly only use it for group support in dungeons when we need the full time protection. I just see huge numbers from whirlwind, GS auto attack, symbol, and a ticking binding blade. It may be because hammer 3 and 5 effectively do no damage.

I actually felt the opposite. Greatsword is fast and all, but the damage it yields doesn’t compare to hammer in the long run. Get the trait that putting an immobilize on someone also places 5 stacks of vulnerability and your #3 will be your best friend in any fight. Especially if someone is rooted on top of the symbol dropped by hammer #1 chain. That’s effectively 1-1.5k (depending on build) free damage from just placing a symbol, which can also add additional stacks of vulnerability from the Valor tree. Plus having access to 2 combo fields with one weapon to keep retaliation perpetually up is fantastic against bursty pvp builds.

Why is Warriors HP > Guardian HP

in Guardian

Posted by: Setun.4368

Setun.4368

Against pure damage, I have to actively try to die, but the moment conditions are slapped on me, I drop faster than a thief trying to tank.

Thieves are apparently perfectly viable tanks in GW2, or so Anet claimed in a video. Honestly, I think no class at all is suited to tanking because melee isn’t viable at all. In my opinion, all NPCs and players do too much damage. It seems that rather than “all classes are viable in all roles” as advertised, we have got “only ranged classes are viable and there are no other roles”. To me, it seems poorly implemented and needs a heck of a lot of tweaking, perhaps even a complete overhaul.

…Really? Dunno what you’re building on your Guardian but mine can stay toe-to-toe using Hammer or Sword and Shield all day in pvp. Yeah some bosses in pve you can’t always just sit there and face tank, but that’s what dodge rolls are for. If your argument partly contains the fact that you can’t close the gap against ranged before they do damage to you try Flashing Blade (1h sword #2) and/or Judge’s Intervention utility.

I personally love using scepter / torch for when I want to apply some heavy dps as the immobilize on the scepter is great for setting up smite / purging flames. Best part of that combo is while both are hitting the enemy you can queue up zealot’s flame (since it acts as a shout and can be used while other moves are channeling), and then activate it again to throw it at the enemy. Hammer has some great dps as well just from the raw damage it brings to the table. Throw in some crit chance on either weapon set and you’re going to see some awesome numbers fly up!

Setun.4368

It’s all about playstyle honestly. I love my warrior to death but I hate playing him in pvp (feels too slow and clunky). I much prefer my Guardian for pvp and pve alike just because he has blink skills and aegis blocks which make jumping from target to target or just keeping pinned on one target extremely easy. Guardian DPS is pretty comparible to Warrior imo, because you can spec both out to be glass cannony and both will be able to blow away anything they fight (highest crit on my Warrior was 10k to someone in a single hit, and 14k on my Guardian between 2 moves that were used at the same time.)

autoattack with hammer have best dps (with static target like dungeons….) but vs players gs>>hammer(>> means OWN bigtime)
staff>>scepter/focus

so best combo gs/staff (best mobility if you wanna escape zergs plus best dps vs players)

Hammer’s main strength is in keeping people pinned to a specific area. Land the immobilize 1st, hammer jump on them, spin the #5 ward circle, and just wail away on them. If you trait so that immobilizes give 3 stacks of vulnerability you’ll be mowing down everything in your path. The weapon may not feel as fast as greatsword, but at the end of the day when you’re hitting for 1-4k per swing on the hammer you’ll think differently. Also the symbol of protection it drops at the chain finisher is stupid handy to stay in long term melee fights.

Fun fact: highest hit using hammer #2 alone has been 8k in a single hit during wvw. I’ll take that any day of the week.

Forced to play with a Greatsword

Setun.4368

Try PvP, Sword and Board works pretty well there.
Also, you have to keep in mind that weapons in Guild Wars 2 correspond to a playstyle, and the Greatsword offers a popular playstyle. This doesn’t mean the Greatsword is a better weapon than all other weapons, just that what it offers is more popular.

So true. I run scepter/torch and sword/focus in my meditation build. The playstyle is very in your face. I have a lot of fun with it and if timed right, you can unload some serious damage. I only pvp though. The only thing missing in my build is an interrupt, but I just don’t want to swap the focus with a shield because of the burst potential from Shield of Wrath.

I run the same setup, only I use sword / shield instead of the focus. The shield skills are extremely handy in pvp for causing disruption (aoe knockback / burst heal on #5 is amazing), and the protection given to you by the #4 shield move is very nice as well. Granted the cooldowns are a bit high, but seeing as how I’ve taken on 2 people in wvw at once and killed both with more than 80% health remaining is super sexy.

Oh! One distinct advantage of sword / x-off hand combo is having 2 sigils that can proc compared to the 1 from greatsword. Something to think about! (I use 30% lifesteal chance on sword, 60% bleed chance on shield, which gives me amazing results)

Scepter Update I'd like to see

in Guardian

Posted by: Setun.4368

Setun.4368

I have to admit, the only problem I have with Scepter in its current form is the speed of the autoattack at long range, and I think both Smite and Chains of Light are fine as is. I’m personally in the camp that would like to see the stream of magical tennis balls swapped for something else entirely, because besides the speed issues, it’s kind of a boring/goofy aesthetic. Give me fast-moving blue fireballs, as opposed to slow-moving blue orbs, and I’ll be happy. If the Scepter’s autoattack damage or rate of attack needs to be reduced (I’d prefer the latter) in order to compensate, that’s fine. I don’t even need the fireballs to move at arrow speed – just fast enough to be practical as a weapon at 1200 range.

I personally believe the other skills are fine as is. I don’t really think of Smite as an AoE attack, simply because the area affected is too small for it to serve that purpose. I think of it as either an area control skill that’s good for harassing targets, or as a spike-assist skill when used with Chains of Light. Basic combos like CoL > Virtue of Justice > Whirlng Wrath/Zealot’s Defense already hurt opponents pretty badly, but if you drop Smite under their feet as you chain them down, you can get some really nice burst going even without running a glassy build. In that sense I’d agree with Setun, that part of the Scepter’s use comes in as a setup weapon. I’m not going to say I’d mind adding a combo field to Smite (Light most likely, though I think Fire would be more interesting), but I think it’s already a strong skill, and you’d need to increase its cooldown to 8-10 seconds to keep it balanced if you buffed it.

TL;DR: Get rid of slow-moving orbs, replace with decently fast-moving fireballs at a slower attack rate. I think Smite’s fine, but if you’re adding a Light or Fire Field to it, it’ll need an 8-10 second cooldown instead of 6.

You pretty much nailed it on how the scepter skills are supposed to work imo. I use CoL, followed immediately by a combo of smite / flame aoe via torch #5 and you can literally see a person’s hp rapidly dwindle (sometimes evaporate) in front of you. It’s an awesome combo buildup weapon, but everyone wants it to be a boring warrior rifle knockoff.

I will admit that the mobility options for warriors really do pigeon-hole you to using specfic weapon types if you want to move around the field quickly / effectively. I’ve actually almost given up on pvping on my warrior mostly because of the general lack of mobility. I actually run a mace + shield / sword + axe warrior shout healing build only because I’ve essentially given up on being any kind of real ‘balls deep’ dps. It definitely feels that once commited to a fight, warriors have a hard time of pulling out if things aren’t going as planned. Especially if you have chilled or crippled, then you’re essentially dead in the water.

I think the best change idea was the smite change to the pillar of light effect (increased damage the longer someone is in it, but if you immobilize someone while smite is going on top of them you kind of get a similar effect with decent crit chance), but to be honest the scepter is a thinking man’s weapon if you will. It’s meant to be used in conjunction with other weapons / combos, not just a ‘all-in-one’ dps package. Not to mention the #1 attack is perfect dodge bait to make enemies pop their dodge rolls early. Lastly I’m not entirely sure why people say it’s weak when I’m hitting for over 800-2k depending on crits per #1 autoattack orb.

The best way to utilize the scepter to your advantage I’ve found is for baiting. The projectiles are easy to dodge, but that’s part of their strength. If you can make someone dodge your autoattack and use up their endurance, just so you can follow up with a guarenteed immobilize via #3 followed by smite #2 immediately after, the combo possibilities while that person is immobilized are whatever you want to make it. I personally love doing that combo mentioned before, followed by using torch #5 at the same time. Smite is constantly hitting them, the aoe flame breath is likewise pummeling them, and if you cast zealot’s flame (torch #4) while #5 is channeling, you can use the 2nd effect for #4 immediately after #5’s channel is over. Against anything that isn’t a bunker build and depending on your build as well that combo for me will do anywhere between 40-70% of the person’s health while they’re just standing in place or just starting to run away. Plus the cooldowns on scepter skills are so fast that unless they gain serious distance from you you can easily pester them since the orb on scepters do have a slight homing ability. But like I mentioned before if you can bait your opponent(s) into wasting dodge rolls on the orb then more power to you as that leaves them that much more vulnerable to whatever moves you have planned.

If only they needed to dodge instead of just change direction every few seconds this would be valid…

The projectiles actually track them and will hit them unless they go out of maximum range. You can technically move away from longbow/shortbow attacks as well if you’re at max range from the person firing it. If you change the playstyle of the weapon to play on its strengths rather than the strengths of another weapon type it works quite well actually.

What do you like about WvW Guardian

in Guardian

Setun.4368

I currently run a tanky dps build on my Guardian, with my primary stat focuses being power and vitality. I try to balance out the rest of my stats so I have decent crit chance, toughness, crit damage, healing power and condition damage. My weapons of choice are either sword and shield / scepter and torch, or hammer / scepter and torch. Utilities I go for Judge’s Intervention, Retreat, and Contemplations of Purity so I’m super mobile and can turn any / all conditions on me into boons at the drop of a hat. My rune set is the Vampirism set to I have 5% lifesteal normally, 100% lifesteal after healing, and at 10% hp I become invulnerable via mist form if things get hairy. For traits I have immobilizes place 5 stacks of vulnerability, 20% shout cooldown, and MF / Meditation cooldown so JI and CoP not only heal me but have a lower cooldown. I swap between the 20% 2h cooldown or the 90 toughness shield trait depending on which I feel like rolling with that day as well. I’m also traited so that when enemies are on fire I do 10% extra damage, so I abuse both the passive and active versions of our F1 when I can, and keep an enemy ignited via torch #4 when F1 is on cooldown. It’s an awesome counter build to thieves and any class that build glass cannon or relies on condition damage because not only can I get 3 aegis’ up back to back (passive aegis popup, Retreat, F3,) but I have enough sustain / condition removal to essentially get free buffs when they try to stack conditions on me. And since the enemy is almost always ignited I’m doing tons of bonus damage from both the ignite effect and the 10% free additional damage to them. The only counters I’ve seen to this build have been shatter / confusion Mesmers just because those confusion stacks really mess me up as I’m swapping out weapon sets constantly during a fight to maximize my damage output.

Some more things.

However, if you’re snared, crossing 1200 every 45 seconds and 600 every 10 seconds isn’t going to stick you to your target for long at all and still requires the use of a specific weapon and ties up a utility slot, if you’re also running with Retreat then you’ve only got one utility left that’s flexible and I’m going to assume SYG, SY or CoP is going there. Making build diversity relatively low if you want to stay close to a target.
That critter technique, while useful, still also requires more effort than other profession’s equivalent and is far more reliant on having a target nearby.

This is an example of what I mentioned earlier, having the option to tailor your build specifically around mobility is good and should be available to every profession, which it is currently. The problem lies in that if Guardians don’t wish to do so, they most certainly lack a lot of snares in comparison to what other professions get with little or no thought at all.

I see your argument and I understand where you’re coming from, but Guardians have a lot of options with regards to control via weapon skills. Hammer, Greatsword, Sword, Scepter, Staff, Spear, and Trident all have some form of immobilize, barrier combo field, sink, pull, and chill (if hammer traited) that can hold lots of people in check. Heck, I LOVE the #3 hammer skill that immobilizes anything in a line to death. But as for building mobility any class in this game who doesn’t invest in a certain weapon type / utility slot for mobility will suffer what a lot of people here are complaining about. I can tell you one of the reasons why I love Guardians so much is that they’re way more mobile than Warriors, and my main was originally a Warrior when I first started. It’s all a matter of choice whether or not you want to be tanky or supporty without much self-speed enhancement reliability, or be ‘bouncy’ as it were.

It all boils down to how you use said abilities to your advantage. Judge’s Intervention and Flashing Blade are both great closers and distancers depending on the situation. I’ve used both skills numerous times to get out of a bad situation by keeping away of my surroundings and targetting something as random as a rabbit to use my skills to get some distance. Retreat is an amazing skill because not only for the swiftness, but the free aegis (which if popped gives might and retaliation if specced) can blow that immobilize or what have you that would otherwise do you in. I will say however that it is a tad annoying that Judge’s Intervention and Flashing Blade have to have a target to work, but at the same time I can’t complain seeing as how being able to cross 1,800 meters between 2 skills whether or not you’re immobilized, snared, chilled, etc is sexy as kitten.

The lack of cripple

Guardians have so many blinks, immobilizes (which are 5,000 times better than a cripple,) and chill (via hammer trait) and movement speed increases that having a snare is essentially pointless. In the time / effort it takes a thief to dodge roll twice, and use all their intiative to run away from me I’m literally on top of them in 2 moves: Judge’s Intervention, and Flashing Blade. Tell me again how we lack mobility please.

Just because you’re bad with a scepter doesn’t mean it’s broken. You’re just bad with it. Scepter is an awesome ranged weapon, it just takes some actual thought to use as you have to plan enemy movements to maximize Smite. Also having an instant immobilize on someone is borderline OP. If you’re that desperate to have ranged maybe you should play a class that is more suited to that role.

Hammer builds for WvW

My current build runs like this:

Main Weapon: Hammer (5% damage increase sigil)
Secondary weapons: Scepter / Torch (20% chill chance when crit on scepter, 60% chance to remove boons on crit to enemies on torch)

Traits:
20 Zeal – With Binding Jeopardy and Fiery Wrath.
30 Valor – With Meditation Mastery, Retributive Armor, and Monk’s Focus.
20 Honor – With Superior Aria, and 2-Handed Mastery.
Utility Skills: Judge’s Intervention, Retreat, Contemplation of Purity, and Renewed Focus as my elite.

The overall focus of this build / weapon combo is to capitalize on the near constant burn effect that you can place on enemies, and the fact that you have 2 immobilize skills that also apply vulnerability on enemies is AWESOME in PvP / PvE. Plus with the scepter / torch combo you can have 3 aoe’s up at once (Smite, Zealot’s Flame [which works like a shout and can be activated while casting other skills], and Cleansing Flame.) This weapon / build focus is also geared at not having to worry about having someone targetted to do damage to them, so thieves and mesmers who try to abuse their invis skills can’t really do much when I can essentially set fire to everything around me, then just control / pound on them with the hammer skills. Also the scepter / torch moves are on crazy low cooldowns, so you can easily use all your scepter / torch skills to initiate, swap to hammer, and if they get some distance on you switch back to scepter / torch and everything will be up again. My utlities are all geared around breaking stuns, gap closing, and turning my conditions into boons. Lots of people are going condition damage these days it seems, and the fact that we can turn any conditions to boons for us is insanely powerful. My gear is mostly Power / Vitality focused, with Precision, Toughness, Healing Power, and Condition Damage / Crit Damage peppered in where I can. ATM My Guardian has about 3.2k attack, 2.6k armor, 22-30% crit chance, 50% increased crit damage, and almost 18k health. My Guardian is at his tankiest with his hammer due to the protection symbol proc from the hammer autoattack, and if you use the blast finisher on #2 when it’s up you and nearby allies gain retaliation which is always great. Lastly his runeset is the Superior Vampirism set. Did that for the 5% lifesteal chance, 100% lifesteal chance when you use your healing skill, and that mist form when you drop below 10% health has saved me on so many occasions when severely outnumbered in wvw to escape as you can heal and/or pop utilities while in mist form and they can’t touch you.

Hope that helps!
