I dont get it either but w/e
would love dueling
Did ANET need a thread to realize how boring it’s a fight against a thief?
Come on guys, a class with high reward low risk while i’m doing my best to accomplish a kill it’s like a punch in the face,
Extreme mobility + High Burst + Stealth =/= fair, some kind of penalty after stealth, I don’t know but in my opinion a thieve who decide to engage in combat and play all their cards and was not able to kill his target within 15 seconds = dead thief,
It’s needs to be a small window of time, let’s say five seconds when the thieve without being able to inflict considerable damage on his target may decide to run away, (because he may feel the target is a high risk), but once he played all his cards no short bow, stealth or kitten should be able to save his kitten
That should be the skill needed to play a thieve, no the perma stealth and bullkitten we see everyday,
At this moment a thieve who decide to engage in combat and play all their cards and was not able to kill his target = escaping thief,
Don’t you get tired? I mean you made it pretty clear that you have 0,00% clue how the thief class works (might be the reason they own you so hard, but just a guess) yet you scream for nerfs to the point where the class becomes obsolete.
This thread is just lolz anyway, i thought it would be about giving feedback to anet from THIEF PLAYERS to improve thief gameplay, yet it’s just a massive whinethread.
no, daze is not a condition
Great build.
Not trying to sound elite here but you’re not playing it to it’s full potential. S/D + D/P can be played completely different with pretty much the same traits u’re using, but much much more effective in WvW 1vsX ganking scenarios.
No balance changes, but culling will get fixed a bit more and as a result thieves will be perceived as weaker than before.
Culling is such an overblown scapegoat though. I can’t wait until they fix it then the whiners realize it had nothing to do with why they were loosing. The only time it’s an issue is extreme zerg situations anyway which individual professions hardly matter at all.
this
i doubt culling makes any difference at all… but we will see
There are probably bots like that out there.
And it makes sense to program one like that, because they make much much more money than a normal kill → kill → kill bot.
They are probably kept very secret, thats why you wont find anything on the interwebs, the more ppl doing this the less profit the bot will make, thats why you want it to be unofficial.
I’m looking for a guild to do fractals with, i know there was a guild called Fractal of the Mists around that specialised in fractals but i have no idea what happend to it.
Anybody?
If people kick thieves out of their fractal party or dont even invite them they are noobs, period.
Dagger storm alone is reason enough to take one with you because it’s just way too good on Grawl Boss.
+ Smoke Screen
+ Refugee
A good thief will also rarely die (SoM + Assassins Reward + Omnom Pie + A little bit of Skill)
It’s true that a Guardian brings more support then a thief, but that doesnt mean a thief is complete crap.
Completing a lower lvl diff does not increase ur diff lvl, and that makes 100% sense. I could just lvl 1 my way up to 80 if it didnt…
Should just let people buy fractal weapon skins for an appropriately high amount of pristine relics. Let’s say 30 pristine relics for a weapon skin. Leave them as the possible daily reward as well of course.
this
Edit: or atleast let us trade skins for “tokens” that you can then exchange for another skin, smth like 3 “skin tokens” → 1 skin of your choice. It’s extremely frustrating to get a skin you dont need at all, considering the drop rate is so poor.
Too strong on the thief.
With all the stealth we have access to it would be easy cake to place portals wherever, whenever u want. It takes some sort of effort on a mesmer to sneak into a guarded SM for example but its easy cake on a thief
I put a rune into the armor maybe thats the cause??
I got it off the TP.
It is not soulbound or accountbound. It still says “Soulboun on Use”
Heya, i want to send my friend an exotic armor piece but somehow i cant send it?
Anybody knows why?
Mix of Berserker, Knight and Valk, Sigil of Paralysation (yes, it gives an extra second of daze in WvW as it still counts as PvE), 30 Shadow Arts for regen in stealth and condition cleanse on stealth – good to go.
Condition removal is not really needed. I’d rather trait AoE blind on stealth. The only opponent condition removal really helps against are P/D thiefs, and i dont encounter that many of them (they’re still beatable without it). On the other hand the AoE blind helps in a lot of situations, especially if you are behind enemy line and taking out ranged classes. But to each his own !
I’d recommend getting a full rare set from the tp with desired stats. Very cheap and definetly enough to do dungeon runs and farm tokens.
S/D (Sigil of Paralysation + Sigil of Fire) + Shortbow (Sigil of Fire)
Armor a mix between Zerker, Valk and Knight
Traits 0/30/25/15
- Gain Fury when opponent reaches below 50% health
- 10% chance to gain Quickness on a critical hit
- 20% more damage when enemy below 50% health
- AoE blind when u’re stealthing
- Gain 2 Initiative when using a skill that stealthes you
- Gain might on dodge
Utility:
Signet of Malice
Shadow Refugee
Shadowstep / Smoke Screen (swap between those 2)
Signet of Shadow
Thiefs for Elite
Food: Omnomberry Ghost
Have fun !
same for me mate
IMO eternity is a waste anyway. When you have both Sunrise and Twilight you can switch between them whenever u want. You’re not bound to time or anything. They also have more effects than eternity.
Eternity shouldnt be just an exact copy of Sunrise at daytime and Twilight at nighttime, it should bring more to the table than that.
Please no monk… =O
I’d like to see a summoner. Not a necro but someone who only specialises around summons. He doesnt raise undeads but animals and stuff.
A shapeshifter would be sick as hell too !
took me around 130 shards for the first legendary i made. (im always using 10x) and a bit more for the second, around ~150 for the second (i used a few x1 because i had 3 leftovers from my first one). Guess im lucky.
I run a very similar build as well, but the trait selection is slightly different. In Shadow Arts I pick up Shadow Protector, Shadow’s Embrace, and Shadow Rejuv. All this regen allows me to weave in and out of fights with Infil strike and recover health when I’m in a bad situation.
I find its the perfect counter to P/D thieves, as they’ll be struggling to keep stacks on you while they’re constantly getting CC’d and you’re stealthing. And I think the poster above is right, as more P/D thieves figure out how ridiculous that build is, more will jump on the bandwagon and we’ll have lot’s of requests for how to beat that build.
Also, I used to do the Infil. Strike -> CnD -> Tac strike mini combo, but now I reserve that for when I get a target to around 50% health, so I can interrupt their healing spell. Before that, you’re better just using Infil Strike -> Crippling Strike -> Shadow Return and flank them. They typically can’t hit you while being forced to face forward and immobilized.
P/D fanboi here.
You can easily counter D/D + S/D with a pistol offhand. Most likely, the fight will end in a draw.
However, the build is very good vs others.
How would you counter it with a Pistol in off hand? With pistol 5?
I have fought some (they are so friggin rare) D/P thiefs and they got crushed very badly. But maybe they were just bad players. I’m using S/D + D/D.
Duels would be awesome.
Cant be that time costly to code so i wonder why it is not in yet.
Why is it important to use your pve character? Grab a pvp one in which everyone has access to the SAME gear. Or is it you are looking for a gear advantage?
Which gear advantage are you talking about? A full exo set takes 1-2 days to grind out. Are you talking about ascended? Ascended is minimal better than exo and no, i dont have a single piece of ascended gear.
After 1000+ hours in WvW / PvE progressing my character and stuff i actually feel connected to it. When i go into sPvP it feels like i have to start all over again which is demotivating. It doesnt feel like im playing the same character i did for the last 1k hours.
… i could use my PvE Char.
A seperate sPvP mode where we could use our PvE char would be so sweet !
Hey guys,
just wanted to know if u guys know any DE chains which are similiar to the one in Kessex Hills. For anybody who doesnt know what im talking about, there are DE’s in Kessex Hills that can repeated pretty much non stop with short breaks in between.
Would be well appreciated !
taking into account S/D is the build I have the least experience with, I’ll answer as best as I can.
as for the first question, it is mostly chaining dazes from stealth and filling the gap with auto attack to max out damage and control.
for number two, the ability has tracking issues so it doesn’t get used much.
for number three, I don’t know of any, but there are several ways to build it, based on whether you want more damage, or more control/survivability. good trees would be shadow arts, acrobatics and crit.
as for four, I think sigil of paralyze stopped working for the daze after its duration got nerfed.
and for five, you ca use a dagger in the main hand of your second weapon set to give yourself a lot of melee versatility. go into stealth with the sword out, then give the enemy a surprise back stab. you get the option of daze, blind, or burst when you go into stealth. a lot is said for making your enemy think about what you are going to do next instead of knowing. just remember to keep a short bow in your bag.
I use Infi Strike a lot and never had problems with it… weird.
The Sigil still works, the daze duration of Tac Strike has been nerfed only in sPvP. The Sigil lifts the duration up to around 2,7 seconds. (In WvW & PvE ofc.)
I want to know every thing about sword dagger. As a thief I have been playing d/d for a long time, but have been very interested in s/d. wvw mainly With a sb .
1. What combos are you aiming for with s/d? is it something like #2-#5-#1-#1-#1-#1??
2. Is there any time a s/d thief should use #3? Or is it better to leave this skill alone save in. for a different skill?
3. Is there a common cookie cutter build for s/d like there is for d/d? If so what is it?
4. Does increasing your stun duration through sigil of paralize increase your daze? If so is this something I should be aiming for?
5. Is there any neat tricks you guys have learned about this weapon set?
1. Yes i use this combo to open a fight as it leaves with a Stunbreak on demand (Shadowreturn). The follow up depends on how the opponent reacts to it.
2. The first strike removes a boon. I use this to get rid of enemys Stability if he has it on. (Stability makes the opponent immune to daze)
3. There are several builds that work very well, it really depends on how u want to play S/D. I prefer 0/30/30/10/0. Something like 0/30/25/15/0 is very good too tho… there are many traits u can choose to use.
4. Yes, the Sigil makes ur daze last around 2,7 seconds instead of 2. I highly recommend this.
5. What exactly do you mean?
I’ve been running S/D + D/D for quite some time. Traits are 0/30/30/10/0 with a mix of Berserker / Valkyrie / Knight pieces. It’s probably the most fun Build i’ve played so far and very very strong 1on1. A great Sigil to use with this combination is the 100% crit chance when you swap to the weapon with the sigil in. If your opponents hp is below 50% -> CnD -> swap to D/D -> deal massive backstab damage (100% crit chance + Executioner Trait). If your opponents survives that just spam Heartseeker and they’ll drop dead very fast.
The Mobility u get from the weapon sets is insane. Infi Strike + Heartseeker + Shadowstep = imba.
I thought about that sigil. I wasn’t sure if it acts like poison and is applied to the next attack regardless of a hit or miss? Or is it on the next connected hit? What about block/evade/immune?
If the attack misses / gets blocked / etc. the sigil loses it’s effect. The next attack you do (even if you have no target or anything) has to hit.
Thanks that’s what I was wondering about. A large amount of my swaps to dagger are to close a gap with HS that misses a lot. Loosing 5% damage still might not be that big of a deal for this benefit though. Then there is the same issue of “I would have crit anyway” so maybe a constant 5% is overall better. Decisions, decisions.
Just have to use ur backstab carefuly after u switched. It’s not very hard to take advantage of it. Especialy if u trait the 50% movement speed when stealthed. (yes this works just like the tooltip says)

I was running 10/30/30/0/0 for a long time before i switched to S/D. I was using full Valkyrie and had 19,2k hp, 23% crit chance, 114% crit damage and 2,3k armor. Around 3k Attack. Crit chance is not needed when you have Hidden Killer and spam Backstab all over the place.
It’s probably the strongest spec i have played so far but S/D is much more fun. Talking WvW here ofc. In PvE S/D > All
The build is not that good…
This has been changed? When my thief doesnt hold his equipped sword in his hand it looks really stupid, like theres empty space between the Character Model and the Weapon Skin. It looked way way way better before.
Why has this been changed??
Depends on what you want to play.
If D/D, 10 / 30 / 30 / 0 / 0 with full Valkyrie is by far the best backstab build there is.
If S/D WvW, 0 / 30 / 30 / 0 / 10 and a mix between Knight and Valk armor. If you wanna use S/D PvE i recommend 0 / 30 / 20 / 20 / 0, a mix between Knight and Valk Armor also.
Running 0 / 30 / 30 / 0 / 10
Trickery 10 because i want fury on steal because i dont use any zerker gear and want to boost my DPS. Combined with the Trait that grants Fury when ur opponents health goes below 50% you have fury up pretty much the whole fight.
I feel like a lot of events could benefit from a WvW approach. Killing a dragon should be like knocking open a Fortified Wall – yes, it requires a bit of DPS, but there should be siege weaponry or something to speed up the process. Imagine this.
A dragon comes up. The thing is freaking massive. It’s completely invulnerable and still deals damage like it does now. In order to kill it, it has to be weakened by something.
There could be an event point where you have to go to a nearby area and kill X of something (don’t tell me this is too cliche, GW2 has many collection hearts/events) and bring back their essence to be combined into something. Then, a PLAYER (as opposed to an NPC) needs to be escorted to the dragon to throw it on him. If the player is downed in the meantime, he drops the item. The item can only be dropped X number of times before having to be recreated.
There could be several of these items that need to be gathered and several events that need to be completed before the dragon is actually damageable. While players are off doing these events, an event could be active while players and NPC’s try to immobilize the dragon and keep him contained to a smaller area. If the dragon were mobile, it could go and destroy village upon village in the zone, and future events would require cleanup of his destruction.
Once the necessary weakening materials are assembled and applied, players can damage him. Players could run to nearby villages to enlist the help of NPC’s in charge of siege equipment that could speed up the process. Siege equipment can be destroyed by the dragon, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
The dragon dies, and you’re a hero, and you all go and work toward cleaning up the villages. This way, there is enough going on to divert the player density to make it feel less like a mindless zerg, and more like there is some strategy to it. I like the WvW dynamic, and feel like it could change the PvE aspect of things drastically (but only in certain areas of course – we wouldn’t want to make it the only way to play).
My two cents.
This sounds awesome !
Shadowstep is kinda limited for what it comes with. Effects on it do not sync well and for that it has too long of a recharge.
Inf signet is in most cases faster, quicker recharge and a nice passive boost.
But doesnt remove conditions and needs a target.
I like inf signet i used it a lot, but then i got used to shadowstep and never went back since.
@Shizzlenit.7648
We’re complaining because the prices keep spiking due to manipulation. We realize we can get this stuff by “playing the game”. If a specific item spike 1g in less than a month, there’s a problem.
For the record, I need 76 charged lodestones left to finish Sunrise all of which I have farmed on my own. I have 120g in gold, 340g total if I sold my investments, but there’s no way in hell I’d pay a single gold for Lodestones at this ridiculous price that keeps rising 5-10 silver a day due to both supply and demand as well as “buy order wall” manipulation. What’s not fair is I am having to farm twice the amount to get one Lodestone than what it was 2 weeks ago.
The problem isn’t even legendaries. People ALWAYS associate this product to legendaries… the two that are popular. No, there are 8 NON-LEGENDARY POPULAR recipes, two of which require much more than any legendary (Mjolnir + Infinite Light). What does not make sense is your medium-casual player should be able to obtain these in a reasonable amount of time playing 2-3 hours a day if that.
But due to the lack of any reasonable drop rates coupled by the blatant price spiking the goal moves more and more forward. Meanwhile other Lodestones are plentiful whether it’s because there’s mobs for it or the dungeon associated with it is much more popular or there aren’t 8 billion awesome recipes using it.
I definetly agree that charged lodestones are way out of proportion right now. When Ifinite Light costs more than Bolt to make there is definetly a problem.
I saw a lot of posts in this thread talking about how legendarys are boring, impossible, etc. etc. to get when all you have to do is play the game. Plain and simple. It will take forever but its possible without any grinding. Just have to play and save SK Points / Ectos / Karma / Coins. Thats all. (not counting the precursor here but i figure they will be easier to get once the scavanger hunt gets implemented)
Want it to be epic? Go do Meta-Events (Fire Shaman, Harahti Hinterlands, you name them) ! They all contribute to your Legendary because you get Karma and Exp ! You also finish ur daily doing these which gives even more Karma / Exp / Coins ! And you will also get Rares ! Which means this also grants Ectos ! All of this just by doing Event chains that are fun, because that is GW2 PvE. If you dont like that, then you will never have fun making a legendary no matter which way.
(edited by Sizzle Hint.1820)
well if you dont want to heavily grind it, you can just play the game.
By playing the game you earn Karma, Skill Points and Mystic Coins. You can transfer these directly to T6 mats / Lodestone if you use the Mystic Clover recipe.
it costs 21k Karma, 6 Skill Points, 10 Ectos and 10 Mystic Coins for one 10x mystic clover attempt. If the attempt fails you get anywhere from 10 to 50 T6 Mats / 10 Lodestones / 10 Mystic Clovers. If it fails, gratz you got a huge junk of what you need anyway, if it succeeds, gratz you got Clovers which you need anyway.
This method will take you a looooong time but it involves no grind at all, because all you have to do is play the game. (Events, WvW, Dungeons, etc. etc.) The only “grind” you could call doing this would be the Ectos and the Coins (coins r dirst cheap). Ectos you will get also by just playing the game, and at the time you get the karma and the skill points you will definetly get the required ectos aswell.
People complaining here want a legendary as fast as possible, in which way you either have to play the TP (fastest method, ive made a fortune playing the tp), buy gold (i was wrong THIS is the fastest method) or by heavily grind Orr, Dungeons, whatever.
I used the 1x recipe over 250 times and got a total of 7 lodestones out of it, none of them charged, 4 destroyer, 1 corrupted, 2 crystal. So its not suggested to gamble that much on the 10x recipe. You might very well go through 250 attempts (2500 ecto,2500 shards) with zero charged lodestones to show for it.
Ok lodestones might be very rare from the recipe. I know ive gotten 10 destroyer when i crafted the clovers needed for my 2 legendarys. I didnt know the chance would be that low. Anyway, like i said, this method will take a long long long LONG time but it involves no grind. It involves just playing the game however way you want.

First of all
Bolt > Inci
Bolt just so damn sexy !
Anyway, OT: I’ve got Inci for well over a month now and i have never been followed when i was stealthed in WvW, im very very sure that the enemy cannot see the footsteps when ur thief is in stealth.
I can solo the Fire Shaman in the Iron Marches on my thief, does that count too? :P
Sword/Dagger is absolute trash after the huge nerf to dancing dagger. This build has crap damage, all of it would come from sword auto attacks and dazing/blinding bosses is useless. Sword 3 is also crap considering it will only hit like 50% of the time. Nice try with being unique, but next time dont pick S/D
You’re completely wrong.
- Entirely Stunlock everything up to Vets (AC explo Necromancers for example)
- Sword Auto Attack is very high damaging + AoE
- Signet of Malice + Sword Auto Attack = awesome (when fighting groups)
- Flanking Strike = Evade for Initiative
- Initiative based Stunbreaker + Condition removal+ Everything the Dagger offhand has to offer (Blind when using CnD, etc.)
P/D is completely crap in PvE. D/D is nothing but Burst and to be honest the damage is not even that much more than S/D, while S/D offers much much more Utility.
S/P is very good in PvE too but doesnt synergize as much kitten D with certain traits. (Heal when stealthed, Conditon removal when stealthed) because you dont have nearly as much stealth uptime. Same goes for D/P.
sadsad
Pistol Whip’s STUN lasts 0.5 seconds, which is nothing. A Tactical Strike DAZE lasts up to ~3 seconds. Pistol Whip roots yourself which means you cannot even dodge once you started the attack. Pistol whip does not do more damage than the 3 Auto attacks from sword main hand. Yes its a bit faster but it also costs 5 Initiative to use. The auto attack costs none. Also, going S/P you have no way to use Stealth beside your Utility, which means the only way to reset aggro (and you have to do that a lot going glass cannon, which you say you do) is by using Utility that stealths you. (Blinding Powder, SR, Hide in Shadows etc.)
Not trying to diss S/P it definetly has its place but so does S/D.
1. No damage is bad. Slower mob killing.
2. Focusing a build around dazing is bad. Vets/bosses take a piss on daze.
3. Sword/Dagger’s 3 skill Evasive Strike is bad. Especially compared to Pistol Whip. If you want a dodge for initiative then swap to shortbow.
4. No advantage for using CnD with Sword just for a daze, because again, useless on the only monsters you guys will actually have to try and kill in a dungeon.PROTIP Thief Guide: Use your burst skills as fast as you can, burn the mobs down, retreat/stealth away, spam shortbow, gain initiative rinse and repeat. Saying “Acrobat” is dumb, as the only difference is the sword 3 which is crap . And if your worried about condi’s, just use Sword 2 and spam condi removal. I’ve voiced my opinions, and you have yours. At that note, good luck buddy
1. I already mentioned, Sword auto attacks do the same damage as pistol whip.
2. Vets can be perma dazed. (The 4 Robo bosses on the Asura Fractal can all be perma dazed, for example)
3. Flanking Strike is used because of the Initiative based evade and for the boon removal. Theres a CD on switching weapons, switching to shortbow whenever you need a dodge and have no endurance left is silly, very very silly. It doesnt work, at all.
4. Blind when Stealthing, Heal when stealthed, Condition removal when stealthed, aggro reset.PROTIP Thief Guide: Actually survive more than 2 seconds.
I respect your weapon choice, if it works for you then fine, but claiming that other players dont know how to play because they choose S/D is very ignorant.
Thieves are meant to be slippery. In this game there is no tanking. Expecially as a thief, with lowest base hp. You have numerous stealths, tons of endurance, as well as highest mobility including shadow step utilities as well. A good thief will remain very mobile and indeed last longer than other classes who are not as slippery. Trying to stay in the middle of fight and spamming 3/dancing around is stupid. Learn to play your class.
Where did i say you have to be a tank? I didnt.
So since you arent interested in a proper discussion and the only “argument” you have left is “learn to play”, i’m done. Just a tip for the future tho, stop being so ignorant and actually learn the strength of the weapon sets your class has access to, there might be something that works better.

So your only argument to the damage was “Sword Auto Attack is very high damaging + AoE” like i said, your basing all your damage off an auto attack…lol..
Go Sword/Pistol with full glass cannon gear and spam pistol whip 6x for 7-8k damage per use, as well as being invulnerable + aoe heavy dps’ing and dazing, and then back away and spam shortbow safely untill your are high initiative again. Rinse and repeat. This build does absolutely nothing special and is lackluster in every aspect, especially damage, and has absolutely no burst either. /threadPistol Whip’s STUN lasts 0.5 seconds, which is nothing.
4. Blind when Stealthing, Heal when stealthed, Condition removal when stealthed, aggro reset.
PROTIP Thief Guide: Actually survive more than 2 seconds.
I respect your weapon choice, if it works for you then fine, but claiming that other players dont know how to play because they choose S/D is very ignorant.

/thread
(Blinding Powder, SR, Hide in Shadows etc.). In the meantime a S/D setup has initivate based access to stealth which synergizes very well with vertain traits as i already mentioned. Traits that make u survive more which you cannot use to that degree if you go S/P.
Not trying to diss S/P it definetly has its place but so does S/D.
