While mystic coins are very hard to obtain and only in very limited quantites mostly via login rewards, ectos can at least be freely obtain about everywhere. Even if you need 250 or 500 for a legendary, you can get there at your pace.

Per the Q&A, mystic coins are currently healthy:

  • Approximately ten percent more supply than consumption at this point in time.
  • Prices remain stable after multiple serious price manipulation efforts, all of which failed.
  • They provide income for new players, selling to established players who desire cosmetic and luxury items; a high price isn’t necessarily a problem there.

[Noob Question]Whats the catch of the TP?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Pretty simple: the market is shared between all players, so there is relatively little arbitrage possible. It’s relatively hard to “buy low, sell high” in GW2, because the market has already eaten the gap between the two.

Beyond that, and the fees that are hidden from the prices, no catch. It’s just a healthy, functioning market. Enjoy it.

(I assume that by “making a lot of money” you mean “selling loot”, or salvage-and-sell, both of which do have pretty good returns, even using insta-sell.)

I feel like a more useful question here might be: what is the goal of this thread?

It’s understandable that you don’t like some of the animations, and that’s fine, but are you looking to use popular opinion to encourage change through some sort of poll?

If so, I’d encourage you to make an actual poll, get some at least semi-representative numbers (eg: a few thousand responses, at least), and then report back.

All this will really do is get people either listing their pet dislikes, or arguing about what “personal taste” is. (eg: I’m sure some folks think those male norn animations you loath are just peachy, and would be sad if they changed. neither of you are wrong, just like different things, yo.)

IDEA: Legendary Pets for Rangers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I like the idea of adding unique or as you say “Legendary” pets. But only as an aesthetic, since pets are only used on rangers, their combat stats are balanced with the damage the ranger itself does. So adding higher stat pets will throw things out of whack.
I’m now thinking of all the unique/rarespawn pet skins in World of Warcraft I got before I quit. The spirit animals were amazing.

WoW solved this by literally making all pets equal DPS, and I honestly wish that ANet would do the same thing. It’s vaguely frustrating to try and balance out the power/condi/tanking nature of pets along with their utility.

It also means that I mostly use a small set of “good” pets for their purpose, and the rest are neglected. Unlike WoW, where I could just use a Sporebat if I wanted, or I could swap to whatever random pet, provided I didn’t much care about the utility slot they filled.

Unlike GW2, where I avoid various pets because they are overall less “min/max” than others, so even if I like the aesthetic more of, say, dogs, cat’s gonna win.

Sadly, the reaction to LS1 means that, no, all maps are now “frozen in time” at their point of creation. So, DR itself lives in an earlier point in time than Lake Doric does, and at that point in the continuity Caudecus was still not revealed evil.

I would certainly prefer that the world ratcheted inevitably forward, but I also understand that there are many, many reasons that is painful, so here we are.

ranger pet bug: not unstowing in combat

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I’m hesitant to report this, as I don’t yet have a recipe for reproducing the issue myself, but: in Lake Doric, some-but-not-all of the time when I enter combat with my ranger pet stowed (eg: click the arrow to down, pet hidden) it will not automatically pop out.

I cannot confirm or deny if this happens on other maps, as I spent my play time yesterday focused on the new content primarily. In the small time I spent elsewhere I did not notice it happening, but I also seldom bothered to stash my pet…

This does not always happen. I’m unclear about the triggering conditions, but I can say that:

  • I noticed it most often fighting roaming white mantel in the north.
  • My pet remained stowed until I manually clicked the “up” arrow to pop it out.
  • My pet behaved perfectly normally after being manually activated.
  • I did experience the enemy hitting me first, placing me in combat, and not having the pet show up.
  • I did experience hitting the enemy first, placing me in combat, and not having the pet show up.
  • I did experience being in combat, pet still stowed, and having the enemy hit me, not triggering the pet to emerge.

I further cannot confirm or deny this happening with any pet other than the Water Drake (with the poison insect breath), as I did not test them as such.

I can say that this still occurred after switching pets, dying, and after leaving and returning to Lake Doric via waypoint. (Thanks, one-way portal to the Hiraithi Highlands.)

I’m sorry for the unclear bug report. I’ll try and update if I can get any more details or, ideally, a recipe for reproduction.

It was the (only) ranger tied to this account that experienced the issue.

So in her simulation, the destroyers are not immune to burning…

A fault in her simulation that may be indicative of future errors on her part?

Or something else?

Errr… they are never immune to burning in all of GW2.

I will gladly point you to the Wiki

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Destroyer_Troll

Destroyers in core tyria, aside a few smaller incarnations, are immune to burning.
It’s why, when Ember Bay was announced, many people feared that Guards would not be able to enjoy the content.

Okay, seems like I haven’t killed many destroyers then in central Tyria. But in all of Season 3 (not just Ember Bay, but also during story missions), destroyers are perfectly vulnerable to burning.

Which makes kinda sense since Season 3 plays after Mordremoth was killed and therefore his energy was absorbed already, changing destroyers and making them vulnerable to fire.

As a condi ranger, so much the best thing. I </3 every time I look at the fire elemental guarded alters in WvW because “immune to burning” on those embers, and bam, half my toolkit out the window.

I wish it was applied retroactively, along with conditions on fixed objects, TBH.

Its too bad we don’t have official in game dps meters, so we could judge a person based on their performance rather than their class.

Decades of experience in other MMOs that do provide DPS meters is that they absolutely, without question, fail to achieve what you are suggesting they would.

Aside from their shortfalls in both tanking and healing, they still fail even on the basis of class-by-class DPS comparisons. Chasing the “flavor of the month” class for raiding in WoW, for example, is a real thing, even when the delta is minimal between the classes or specs.

It’s a people problem, the “meta”, and it’s never, ever going to be solved with technology. No matter how much you prove classes are equal, or that X provides utility that Y requires, you will still have people interpreting a five percent DPS difference on a fight as proof that a class is “so dead it could come from Orr” … or forgetting (or insisting) that only single-target or only cleave damage counts, or … whatever.

Can’t technology the dumb out of players. Even when developers stand up and say, point blank, that something is designed so it can be completed in (the equivalent of) rare gear, not even exotic or ascended, players still don’t believe you can achieve it without the best possible gear and class.

Problems with the Mac version

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

It’s worth noting that your computer shutting down because “a problem occurred” is something that GW2 might trigger, but it is absolutely, without question, a problem with your computer.

Basically, if anything poked at your OS and/or hardware in that way, it would crash. GW2 just happens to be the unlucky thing that pokes it wrong, and boom, the problem shows up.

Hardware issues are a common cause, and over in Windows land mismatched drivers, but the later isn’t a macOS thing unless you are running some sort of hackintosh or whatevs.

So, I’d suggest:

  • reinstall macOS using the recover system. will not harm configuration, but may fix issue.
    * remove any uncommon drivers you may have hand-installed on the system.
    * try disabling your anti-virus software, see if it reoccurrs, if not, turn it back on, try again
    * look into hardware issue.

good luck.

Is trolling allowed?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

The answer is always going to be “it depends”, but … if the “trolling” is actively trying to make people feel terrible, or is racist, sexist, etc, then it’s almost certainly going to be actionable.

If it is just telling someone something wrong, but generally harmless, like “you should totally play a water mage healer in pvp”, then it’s unlikely to be actionable, but it also depends on the context and content.

TL;DR version is that you should probably report if you are not sure which side of the line it sits on, as that will also help, eg, anet establish if this is an ongoing pattern, etc.

You were able to open chests on every map, after completing the AB meta once, making it between 8x and 25x the intended reward. This is now fixed, in that you get exactly 1x the loot intended, because the number of chests you can open is fixed, regardless of which map you open them on.

Also I know the necro bug, where they are actually good, is fixed. Is it too much to ask to bug necros again?

Unfortunately, Anet has decided that skill = the ability to copy builds from websites – and the punishment for not doing so is crippling your group and severely lowering your chances at ever seeing the content.

ANet didn’t decide that, players arbitrarily decided that. Be upset about the meta all you want, but don’t act as if it isn’t self imposed by the players

…and by the same players who fail to notice that groups substantially smaller than the “required” size, or without strictly following the meta, routinely clear the same content.

The meta builds are magic — the belief that skill is irrelevant, in favor of performance differences that in the real world are in the realm of noise.

(PS: before citing DPS benchmarks, find me one that involves actually dodging mechanics, or link to parsed EVTC logs or something. The qtfy ones are nice, but not realistic.)

water combat is fun cuz its a fully 3d environment, but skills are in a perpetual alpha state, not even beta.

Nah, even with fully fleshed out skills, 3D combat is super-hard and un-fun because the input and output devices we have really, really don’t map well to it. It’s very hard to look up and down, or move up and down, compared to looking left, right, or moving on a flat surface.

Maybe when we finally have a real VR MMO, and someone figures out a six-direction input setup on the keyboard or replaces it with some random controller, it won’t suck, but until then…

Anyway, a much better thing would be to get 2D combat in an underwater environment. Do that, and you get combat that matches reasonably well to the controls available to players.

I’d, uh, probably expect to see much sadness around combat if you stuck with the underwater weapons we have, though. They play sufficiently differently, and are sufficiently unpracticed by most players, that they wouldn’t be “fun” compared to the land skills…

Some options to turn on/off the different parts of the UI, and perhaps (gasp!) the ability to actually MOVE things around would be a very good start in the right direction!

Alternatively, you could let us use addons to do this. If it saves on developmental effort. Just a thought.

It generally doesn’t, though, since the cost of making things open for customization in arbitrary ways is a lot higher than letting them be changed in limited ways, which in turn is a lot more costly than not letting them be changed.

It also opens up an endless sea of security related issues in the game, which have a large and ongoing cost. See whatever WoW addon exploits came in after the “toggle nameplates in combat allows detecting casting, allowing automated interrupts on demand” was figured out a couple years back.

If you want a strong vertical progression game such as WOW or Rift, or whatever else, this is not it. This specifically was advertised to be different from those and stays somewhat true to that.

Not that they really deliver a meaningfully different experience despite that vertical gear treadmill: each time the next increment comes out you just get reset, and then work hard to get back to where you were.

If you really want that experience in GW2, craft a set of green gear when LS4 launches, then grind back up to ascended items. It’s all the fun of gear “progression” brought to life!

…but, seriously, even in vertical progression games you end up either stalled at the top of the current tree, or playing ever-increasingly minor increments of luck to upgrade, ala diablo.

The 4.5% is actually an average on packet losses, upon closer inspection half the packet losses start from the ISP server on the third hop (and then the following hops are affected too). Some even reach 10-20% on the third hop. Soooo I guess you’re correct.

Thank you ! I’ve already tried calling my ISP but the tech guy I had on the phone had no idea what ping is so it’s gonna prove challenging.

It’s kinda cheating, but I find telling them that webpages are “stalling” while loading is often a useful trick to get past the script, and up to some reasonable debugging on their part.

SlippyCheeze.5483

@Slippy: by “not a bug” do you mean that (a) it’s intended behavior by ANet or (b) that it’s expected behavior because /ip was never meant to offer players a “unique label” for different instances?

Neither seems very likely to me, unless it never occurred to them that (1) we’ use /ip to keep track of who was on which instance and (2) that they wouldn’t have been aware that eventually physical hardware refreshes would end up causing a ‘stacking’ problem.

Put another way, it’s a functionality glitch for the consumer, with a root cause that is — at best — caused by someone not paying attention to the obvious consumer-side use cases. In other words, a “bug” for players, even if everything was coded as planned.

I mean both: it’s working as intended, in that ANet are likely entirely comfortable with multiple map server instances on the same physical machine, and also, that it was never intended to work as a unique map identifier.

and as a developer, I can tell you that I’ve encountered this sort of “assumed to be unique” behaviour before, and we really don’t think about it being used like that, until someone points it out. I can’t speak for ANet, but I think it is entirely possible that they never realised it might be used that way.

I accept your point about players wanting some unique map instance identifier, though, and that might be a good thing for ANet to provide to eventually replace `/ip` with…

Hum, tooltip is one thing and the skill could be quite another. Anet has a long history of inaccurate tooltips.

Try hitting a few golems (at least 10 with and 10 without the trait) in HoTM. Average the values, see if there’s a bug indeed. I’d pick an amulet without crit to get non-crit values.

Apparently you aren’t reading what he’s getting.
If a skill is lowered by adding a trait, the trait is bugged.

…if the tooltip display damage is lowered, but the actual damage is increased, there is still a bug, but a vastly less significant one than if the actual damage is lowered, yes?

Which is what that post was all about. It’s intended to help identify where the problem is found, because in the past tooltip errors that were not matched with symmetrical actual damage number errors have been common.

It appears that you packet loss is starting just past your modem. Once you have packet loss it carries to each node you connect to. I would start trying to eliminate it at your ISP, that should also clear it up at each node along the way.

Came here to say the same thing: in three of the four links, you have ~ 4.5 percent packet loss in the first hop. Talk to your ISP, because you should never see anything there, and that’s definitely in their ballpark.

Beyond that you may still have problems, but … what you care about is when you get a specific level of red packet loss at a hop and every hop past it.

If you see one hop with high packet loss, but the next hop is fine … it’s just not responding to your ping messages. That is totally legit, and pretty standard, for busy routers, they just don’t treat it as important.

When there is no packet loss following, that’s a sign that it is forwarding traffic just fine, but not responding to messages that end at “it” as a hop.

cough I don’t think that is a bug, it’s literally just that one physical computer could host multiple “server” processes, each of which was handling the same map.

It may be common, but it is also pure luck, that you get distinct IP addresses for maps. As physical hardware refreshes run through the NCSoft data center — every three years, minimum — expect to see more stacking of map IP addresses, as more cores means more “map servers” on a single system, but not much more capacity from a single “map server”.

(and just count yourself lucky that they don’t use a load balancer to route you to the target process, so all the maps have the same ip address.

You may benefit from a -repair of the client, due to corrupted file(s).

Instructions to repair the client can be found in the Knowledge Base accessed via the ‘Support’ link above/below and ‘Search – Repair’.

Another command line argument that may work would be -prefreset.

If you continue to have issue, you can contact the CS Team via the same ‘Support’ link and ‘Submit a Ticket’ for assistance.

Good luck.

GW2 repair doesn’t work for many, I being one of them.

There are glaring errors and not one Dev has gotten back to us about most of them.

The repair option being the most egregious of all.

I’m really not sure what you imagine “-repair” is supposed to do, but it does exactly what it is intended to: checks the integrity of the content of the gw2.dat file, and ensures that anything broken will be redownloaded.

This may or may not solve the problem, but if you really believe that it isn’t working, you can simply delete gw2.dat entirely, wait for all content to redownload, and end up in the same position.

To your other complaints, the reasons that the “devs” have not gotten back to you is because it is absolutely, without question, not their job to spend time responding to your individual complaints on the forums.

If you want individual attention, submit a support ticket via the link available here.

Of course, that likely leads to your final point, that there are “glaring errors”, which are most likely some sort of hardware, software, or network problem at your end. (Why? Well, because if they really were as common as you say, reproducing and fixing them would be easy for the developers, and there would be a lot more people experiencing them, observably neither of which is true.)

Too Lazy, Didn’t Read version: your problem is almost certainly something broken about your computer and/or network. Don’t whine about devs not fixing your pc.

Buuuuuuut… I’ve been stuck in Bronze Tier 1 for the whole season, I’ve never managed to climb into Tier 2, and honestly, I don’t even think I’m that bad of a player. I’m able to read the map, win my fights, cap my points etc etc, but some of the teams I’ve been with have blown my mind. From people not using team chat, to people who throw themselves on a point and expect to win against an AoE spam. Attached, you’ll see that my win/loss ratio is about 28 wins to 30 losses… but that shouldn’t be the measure of my personal skill.

…then you are not an “average” player, you are a bottom tier player. I know it’s hard to accept, but that’s the hard reality of it.

We’ve tried to ‘report’, even with ticketing, and little is ever done to stop the hacking that isn’t being focused on by Anet.

So, we can only presume that this is your effort to use public shaming to force ANet to respond more effectively to hacking in WvW, right?

It would be significantly more convincing if you provided anything other than your assertion it was happening, and there was no response. (Especially in light of, eg, ANet removing players from ranked PvP leaderboards in the public eye for exploitative behavior, without something as serious as an actual hack involved.)

Video would probably be perfect, just capture something showing someone getting, say, into the heart of SMC while the walls are up, and you will get the public outcry you seem so much to want here.

Just one wafer thin little smidgen of proof….

odds are, your anti-virus software is blocking the connection from the GW2 client.

I’d personally try deleting the installation and downloading again, but YMMV. (You could preserve the gw2.dat and just get it to download the rest, btw.)

Why ranger will never be viable in WvW

This has been a well known fact since forever. The underlying truth is that the game is balanced around 5v5, and although WvW does get some specific balancing at it’s core the game is still a 5v5 game. And pets (and any other minions) scale badly beyond that.

We can still roam. We can still duel. Hell you can still zerg, be of some use and have a ton of fun while you’re at it. But the core problem will never ever go away.

I also noted that most of the pet recommendations tend to be the highest single target pets, rather than, say, the lizards with their nice cleave and aoe attacks. It’s not amazing — the three or five targets that, eg, melee weapons get — but it’s certainly more than nothing.

Have I missed something there, where preferring cleave in large group fights isn’t as useful as I think?

Drake autoattacks for 700-800 damage, it’s pitiful.

What’s the tiger AA damage, though? Single target 1.2k? That’s half the damage output in a group where the drake hits three targets, right?

Perhaps the most useful thing to know would be this: when do sigils of might, etc, that boost power damage apply their modifier? Is it, like bursting, before might &c., or is it after them?

Charge Lodestones are fairly easy to get now with the Map Bonus system

Especially if you unlock the pact supply mastery, and purchase the “pact scout mapping materials” or whatever they are from the vendors daily, for karma. Those deliver instant map rewards on consumption, and you can bank them until you get what you need.

You’re really going to push this ?

2 weeks is faster than 2 months no matter how you quantify it.

You can debate the quality of it all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that the pace is SLOWER.

I’m pretty sure that what they are arguing about is not the obvious and simple fact that moving the story after months, not weeks, is slower.

They are arguing about your implied judgment that this is worse.
