I’ve come to GW2 from WoW, imagine my surprise to find we’re only allowed 4 hunter pets in GW2. In WoW we could have 50, I used to rotate mine to suit the job in hand. To allow us 4 takes away one of the pleasures of a beastmaster type hunter, that of looking for and taming wild beasts. In WoW, it could any level up to Boss pets, in GW2 it’s juvenile only.
GW2 hunters are very lame compared to the WoW beastmaster, time to look for a decent game I think. Shame really as the graphics are a nice quality, and the Asura are fun to play.

cough interestingly, you were only “allowed” five pets in WoW like you are “allowed” four in GW2. Your trolling isn’t even consistent.

Wonder why they quit when you were winning. As for the report, maybe they mistook you for one of 2 people who quit.

More than likely they player made the assumption that the people who quit were doing it in order to throw the match to the other side, and sent the same whisper to all the players on their team.

Why is an open question, but then, there are lots of “why” questions throughout the entire story.

- rating system punishes u for playing because u lose more rating than u win therefore forcing people to play on their alts and troll or do whatever else to not risk their rating

The rating system does that if your MMR is higher than your skill level. When you finally drop your MMR down to reflect your abilities you will start to see equal values for wins and losses, and then as your skill improves you will see larger gains and smaller losses.

(This is, in fact, the way that your MMR corrects over time – it’s the constantly adjusted guess about how good your skill is compared to everyone else playing the game.)

I sell every one I get. If Arena Net would let me sell all of the stupid account bound crap, I would be grateful. I will NOT craft. At least let me get rid of all this garbage in a way that is good for me.

ANet already provided a way to get rid of it that is good for you, crafting. Your personal choice to refuse doing that is not their problem.

You absolutely have the freedom to do whatever you wish, but don’t mistake that for a right to have your choices be consequence-free.

You are mistaken about it not being ANet ’s problem.

Anything that alienates, reduces engagement of, or disenfranchises potential paying customers is a problem for the company. Now the company may very well decide that they can live with the problem, particularly if they are unable to find a solution, but it is still their problem.

ANet does, after all, have the right to do whatever they wish with the game, but should not mistake that for a right to have their choices be consequence free.

Your statement isn’t wrong. It’s just … well, it’s not ANet who are here complaining about the mystic coin situation. In fact, they have someone they pay who spent years studying the area who has a full time job ensuring that they stay in an area that is acceptable.

So, not wrong, just … misdirected, shall we say?

I am unable to complete the activity on my Sylvari “Slippi Cheeze” at all. I have tried the various things mentioned here, including delays, aiming manually, etc.

I also tried “aim at something else, get the skritt between me and the target, throw”, which is what works for me with the “hit players” version.

None of this was effective. I also tried the same things outside DR, to no good effect. Symptoms were exactly the same.

I was able to complete it right back at the start, though, and I’ve noticed recently that I seem to be getting a lot more “obstructed” results with the thrown axe-1 skill on my ranger. Also, things that spawn like spiders from eggs, destroyers from rock piles, seem to be “obstructed” no matter where I stand until they move.

It feels like the vertical point that thrown things aim for might have moved downward on the targets recently, and that’s maybe no longer getting them into the active area as much as it used to, or is hitting the ground before the target point?

I mean, I know that’s probably just my imagination, but… it really seems like that.

It is also worth remembering that nothing is forever: balance changes happen regularly, classes go up and down in power, new content brings new favored approaches, and people relaxing means they stop being so kitten about “the exact thing I read on metabattle was the bestest”.

Plus, while we don’t have a hard promise that the next xpac will bring a new round of elite specs, it seems highly likely, and that almost certainly brings a non-healing/support elite spec to ranger. (Because, hey, druid is already there, yo.)

I am not opposed to NPCs being immature or selfish…plenty of people are. My concern is not being allowed to avoid or ignore such people.

It’s important to realise that you never will be able to avoid or ignore them; this is an MMO story line being developed with fairly limited resources so the story can never branch and you will have to follow the same story as every other (ex)Pact commander out there.

One of the things that I think The Secret World did right, and every other MMO that I’m familiar with did wrong, is that TSW did not make you “THE” hero. WoW, GW, everything else, you are.

We would be better off, story-wise, as part of the solution to saving the world than as the person leading the effort. Not only does it lead to the annoyance of “why am I being so kitteningly foolish here”, and the conflict of why a leader is so … insignificant, but it really starts to hurt the future.

I mean, we led the pact to destroy the dragons. Every one of us is THE single lone commander of the pact that did it. Now … what next? Can’t really promote us. Instead, we get “importance inflation” biting us.

If, instead, we were a critical part of the solution – a footsoldier who achieved amazing things, but not the leader, not setting direction, not “THE” anything … so much less conflict between the realities around us and what role our character played in the story.

Flax Fiber?

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

You may want to consider that a flax fiber is currently running at about 10s, and flax seeds are currently running around 2s, at the sell/buy prices respectively.

Which means that when you harvest flax you are getting one flax fiber for every six seeds you obtain – simple sell the seeds on the TP, and purchase the fibers with the money you receive. (and probably 5:1 or 4:1 if you are patient and use the sell price for seeds, and buy price for fibers.)

I mean, I grant you that it’s annoying not to be able to harvest your own, and I certainly feel your pain because I finally levelled a scribe this week, but … it’s not like hunting maguuma lillies where the drops from jungle plants are otherwise pretty much worthless…

deciding between ps warr or chrono

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I answered this elsewhere, but:

If you have to ask, PS Warrior rather than Chrono. The might requires no particular coordination or timing to benefit from, while the alacrity does. If you don’t know yet, take the easier option.

Also, “with a druid” is approximately-equal to “with a dedicated healer”, and you probably want to go look at what Agony is over in the wiki to figure out the answer to that yourself. It’s certainly going to help, but it’s probably not as essential as people make out.

(Think of it like the “currently OP” class in WoW raiding, which you mentioned coming from. Sure, it might be marginally easier, but generally player skill is going to move your DPS more than the OP class stacking would.)

I’ll look into Discord though!

Yeah, so, here is the thing: Facebook provides really good support for doing all those things. An FB “group” is very much like a blog, with a much, much lower barrier for entry to post your stuff there.

I think that your questions approach this from the wrong angle: it really, really depends on the skill and learning curve of your players.

For the mathy question at the end, you should be able to calculate that one yourself if you really care, but if not I’d say … whichever you prefer, but probably PS Warrior if you have to ask.

(why? it’s less squishy than chrono at lower skill levels, and might is less timing dependent on the part of other players. so it’s going to be more forgiving which, if you need to ask, you probably still benefit from.)

If you say that every other hop – including the ones past that host – are at 8-11 percent packet loss, then it’s almost certainly just that being a router that drops “excessive” ICMP.

If it was the problem point, it’s gonna show the same degree of loss for every hop beyond it, because of course it’s dropping that many packets as they reach it, or as they pass through.

cough what you report, though … that’s bad. Like, “OMG, amazingly terrible” bad. You should see somewhere around zero percent packet loss. Once you get past five percent things are getting bad, and ten percent is going to cause huge problems with anything trying to traverse that connection.

So, yeah, I’d start with looking at where you see the jump from zero percent to ten percent packet loss, and figuring it out from that. If that’s before your ISP then, hey, at least it is inside your own walls.

The best choice for a guild website is Facebook. Other than a small number of people who object to using it, it provides an excellent group forum, the ability to schedule events, photo hosting, etc. It’s also widely used, has good push notifications, etc, so people actually, y’know, see the posts.

Some sort of web board thing, either hosting your own, or via enjin and competitors, is pretty much the worst possible choice. Even in extremely dedicated guilds, it’s home to a half dozen people who use it mostly for off-topic chatter, and not much more.

The best choice for voice chat is almost certainly Discord today. It’s the new hotness.

windows client on a Mac using WineBottler

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I have some really bad news for you: the root cause of the instability of the Mac client is that it’s actually the Windows 32-bit client running in something very similar to wine. (Cider, an old toolkit for porting games to the Mac.)

Wine can run the 32-bit Windows GW2 client as well, but that’s not going to help with stability. It’s gonna have the same problems with memory exhaustion, etc, that the Cider port will.

What is super depressing is… 64-bit Windows and 64-bit MacOS are incompatible. They use one of the CPU registers in incompatible ways, meaning that WINE isn’t going to be able to run 64-bit Windows programs any time soon. (possibly ever.)

You would actually be better off investing in something like VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox with their 3D drivers to run stuff here.

QoS: Trading Post "quick sell" button.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I rarely bother listing items on the trading post matching the asking price others have: it’s just not worth it to me, compared to being able to do whatever I want. I’ll pay that ten percent or so in order to have direct access to money.

Usually, I approach that by gathering a bunch of stuff, then bulk-selling it. That is a slow process, involving clicking three times, that doesn’t really seems to bring any great value to the table:

1. Click the item in the trading post (or right-click and select Sell…)
2. Click “yes, I want to sell this.”
3. Click “yes, I sold this.” aka the “Close” button.

If the best buy offers don’t cover everything in the stack, it’s worse – the close button is in a different position, it’s easy to accidentally list for sale rather than directly selling, and you usually have to manually reset the count from 1 to the rest of the stack.

If it was possible to get a “quick sell” feature, that’d be great: being able to click one button to sell something for instant gold, that’d be exactly what I wanted out of this interaction with the tool.

Even better would be the ability to select multiple items and quick-sell them all, but that’s obviously a bigger interaction change than a separate button on the line item to sell it, and probably not that much better overall…

I don’t think you quite understand how MMR works: it’s not “the right number”, it’s a constantly changing approximation of how well you are doing compared to other people playing the game.

You should hit the right number “statistically”, not on a per-match basis. Moving up and down by 1.5 percent isn’t a problem. You should experience that – and if you are in the right region, you should see about as many ups and downs as each other, and stay in the same place.

MMR is, at heart, an continually adjusted guess about who you should play against. There is no “right” answer possible, in a world where people learn.

Here is a valuable lesson for you: the wheel of power turns ever, ever on. Whatever class is powerful today will be powerless tomorrow. (or, more realistically, whatever is one percent above the rest today will be one percent below them tomorrow, as the balance team nudge things around.)

All three classes are extremely versatile, and can perform well in all areas of the game. They play somewhat differently, and TBH, my “aesthetically pleasing” and “smooth when playing” are probably not going to match yours, so that’s not a useful guide.

Perhaps your best option is to create a level one instance of each, take them to the PvP lobby, and try out their fully unlocked specs there to see how you feel about them? That’s the easiest way to get a preview of max level play on the class…

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Honestly, it’s pretty simple: people don’t admit to being new, because a small part of the community ruined it for you. Sadly, that’s not even the GW2 community, it’s the “plays MMOs” community.

It only takes one or two instances of being abused for being new, and asking, to learn that you should never, under any circumstances, admit to not knowing things. Doesn’t even matter if it was over in WoW, or LoL, or something radically different, that lesson sticks.

Which is why I adopted the approach of: if the mechanic matters, just explain it in one or two sentences. No asking if people are new, no giving a kitten if experienced players know it.

If that kittenes off someone so much they quit the group, that’s probably a rage bullet dodged later anyhow. What it does do is cue the new players without them having to admit to anything.

Server Transfers

in WvW

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Dear pointaction, I hate to say it, but this doesn’t work. Players will not voluntarily balance out over servers. Even at the scale of WoW with 10 million players, they will not do that.

They will, in fact, pay real world money to achieve the opposite: to join whatever the big winners are in the lottery of wvw at this time.

The only solutions for this are, in fact, involuntary ones. It is necessary to move players without their permission to balance systems, or to move to a universe in which “server” is not the unit by which WvW populations are drawn.

(Note: simply creating red, green, and blue factions, and allowing voluntary membership would also fail, in the same way, as players flock to the winning faction. You must force players to do this, they will not voluntarily balance.)

How to Better Reward WvW

in WvW

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

For me its this simple. I want to stay in wvw. I joined a guild that is mainly wvw focused. Wvw demands coverage 24/7. Yet there are things I don’t have access to unless I do other game modes. Things required for crafting decorations for the guildhall. I understand not having access to materials to make certain trophies for particular game modes, but fragments of ocean? And don’t even get me started talking about raid rewards.

Perhaps the idea is that you, alone, shouldn’t have to provide all the things to decorate the guild hall on your own? That, in fact, other guild members might provide those?

Which does break down a little when your guild is exclusively focused on one fragment of the game.

New PvP Ranked - Unbalanced

SlippyCheeze.5483

Of course it works itself out. That’s the point of MMR: it corrects over play.

Better still: if it’s wrong, and places players too high, it actually gives the OP AN ADVANTAGE in their play! You see, the other team have five slots that can be filled by a “ranked-too-high” player, and the OPs team only have four slots that can be filled by them. (Since, presumably, the OP deserves their own Gold 3 or Platinum ranking.)

So, yah, the worst possible effect of this is that the OP wins more matches and ends up with their own ranking and MMR being artificially inflated until the poor quality players filter down toward the bottom of the rankings…

Lucky you, you played LS1, so you have the background; LS2 fills in some gaps pre-HoT, then HoT, then LS3 brings you to the current day.

Ultimately, I’d ask myself: am I going to get enough fun time out of this to justify the cost; I’ve certainly personally spent enough time in HoT territory than it’s worth it.

The issues with 32-bit is a Windows problem, you could have 16g of ram but windows only sees less than 4gb.

That is only be a problem with a 32-bit version of windows. Here is a wiki article about this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier). And if i understand correctly it is more of a licensing problem.

Either a 32-bit client, or a 32-bit version of Windows, will cause problems – for different reasons, but problems none the less.

Unless by “licensing issues” you mean that the OP has no license for a 64-bit version of Windows, there is no useful option that would make a difference here other than “upgrade OS to 64-bit, use 64-bit GW2 client”

I leave it with personal story disabled, since I also get a second indication that is active, and if I want to complete map stuff and have trouble locating it, also disable events, which means that the nearest map completion item is highlighted.

Ultimately, though, that’s “working as intended.”

I have personally done map completion in that zone recently; if this is broken, it is not universally broken, and you will need to supply more information about what the problem you see is, and how you have tried to cause it to start.
