Will the next expansion be discounted?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

SlippyCheeze.5483

The largest MMO releases their expansions at a $30 price point, this is true, but they ALSO require you to pay a monthly fee.

Nope.

World of Warcraft: Legion is at kitten price point, as was Warlords of Draenor before it, and Mists of Pandaria before that, and Cataclysm before that, and Wrath of the Lich King before that, and The Burning Crusade before that.

Holy kitten, legion is $50? I remember BC being lower than that, but then it has been a long time since then, and that was also when I started, and also stopped playing cause I hated WoW but loved GW1.

Edit: But this only makes my point all the more valid… I will not complain if the new xpac is $50, because others expect that plus a sub fee. The amount I have spent on the the base game and then HoT, I feel I have gotten my money from in over 4000 hours of play time.

Count yourself lucky that it was only $50. The cross-ocean tax made it approximately USD $70 in Australia.

Option to toggle boosters on and off

Don’t some of the boosters improve PvP reward track gain? I’m sure there was something like that I saw on one of them. (Not that I used it, so I could be misremembering, and it only applies to WvW.)

So, as you — and everyone else — reports this, they will get an understanding of how often it happens, as well as more evidence about why, and eventually a fix will be possible.

here is how to fix it without any hassle:
DO NOT USE WIN 10

seriously win 10 was NEVER good for gaming and has never been fixed in that regard. WHY do you even have 10?

While I’m certain this accurately represents your belief, it is not productive, or helpful for the original poster who is extremely unlikely to change to an older Windows version — especially as this may cost them a non-trivial amount of money to purchase an appropriate license, if one is even available.

It is also unhelpful in the sense that Windows 10 does work fine for many people playing GW2, and cannot be attributed as the sole cause of problems — especially as the vast majority of the issues seem to trigger from third party software such as FPS and performance monitoring tools, DPS meters, and screen recording/broadcasting tools.

But, one obvious problem is that many of the skills for reaper simply don’t exist in WvW, like all reaper shroud skills.

By “simply don’t exist” I assume you actually mean “are not used”, because otherwise this is … rather wrong.

Also, at least the ice field / whirl combo for throwing around bleeds is definitely used it WvW, verifiable by looking for the complaints about how overpowered it is. Beyond that, I routinely see (and use) reaper shroud skills in WvW.

So … while you might not use them, it is not the case that they “do not exist”, or that they cannot be used effectively.

Free accounts are able to choose their world when first set up, however they cannot transfer to a different server by any method. After upgrading to a paid account, they receive one free transfer to any non-full world.

This. I’d strongly suggest going down this path, especially if they have earned enough gold to notice.

Also, if you can’t bring them to the world you want, you could put a ticket in with support and ask for help. They may be able to do something about it. (The forums are for player-to-player advice, mostly, and support tickets are what put you in touch with the anet GMs.)

But just how forgiving are the raids?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

DPS is also still so much required because the higher DPS is the more you can ignore the mechanics

This only works if you’re already familiar with the mechanics. You can’t do that with a bunch of players who entered a raid for the first time. And as such, it is irrelevant to the discussion. And it also doesn’t make the dps required. It makes it rewarding.

…it’s also much less frequently the case that it lets you “ignore” the mechanics than Orangensaft suggests, and more that it lets you reduce the number of times you need to do the mechanics correctly, or the degree you can compensate for people who handle them poorly overall.

Anyway, someone did the math, and ~ 8k to 10k DPS accounting for 50 percent undamagable was what they came away with, so … I think that Feanor is exactly on point here.

Will the next expansion be discounted?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Some of you need to stop begging for more freebies and discounts on a game that has $0 in monthly access fees.

If some of you want some super deal then wait a year after the next xpac launches.

It’s like nobody buys anything on the gem store to support the game, right?

The expansion should not cost the same for existing players as it does for new players if the new players get everything existing players paid for. There’s not really any ethical way around that. And yes, new customers should get LS unlocked. It’s a big part of the content.

I agree with you on the living story unlocks, for what it is worth. It would open up the field to, eg, have daily event completer run in the LS3 zones, which I think would be a good thing.

I think you are mistaken about what you bought, though. You don’t pay $X and get “guild wars 2”, you pay $X and get “guild wars 2 at this point in time.”

Is it an ethical issue that someone paid $60 at launch for HoT, but today I could purchase it for $30? After all, I’d be paying less than you did, for the same content, right?

The same is true of the next xpac: if they price it at $60 for everyone, and bundle HoT, all that means is someone could have waited until that point in time and gotten HoT for, effectively, $0.

On the other hand, they had to give something up for that, right? Like, not being able to play HoT for all the time from the launch of HoT to the launch of xpac2.

You are, in essence, arguing that discounting older products over time is an ethical failure. It’s … probably not an easy position to support.

If they are already deciding the shape of wars between other races — and it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say, partly responsible for shaping the peace between them — are you sure they /don’t/ already rule the world?

QoL: Necromancer Minion heals outside combat?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Since the change to prevent in-game healing from keeping necromancer minions alive for much longer than intended — which I understand is a legit issue — they never heal at all.

For random running around in PvE this is quite an annoyance, because it means your minions are gradually whittled down, and eventually die, triggering the cooldown on your skill.

Since almost all of them can’t be dismissed manually, it’s impossible to pop a low health, eg, flesh golem, or bone crawler, and replace it while out of combat. Instead, you go into combat knowing that it’s going to die pretty quickly, and then be 30 to 60 seconds before you can bring it back.

Would it be possible to enable healing for minions only when out of combat, so that they regain full health the same way your character does? That would make them much more predictable, but doesn’t seem likely to cause in-combat problems…

They’ll make you download Game Advisor and WinMTR to determine if there’s packet loss and such.

Yes. The reason that I recommend following the guide at https://www.pingplotter.com/fix-your-network is that it does the same diagnostics that anet support are asking for, and has useful advice on figuring out how to resolve them.

Good luck.

To second this: a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bluescreen is absolutely a driver issue of some sort. It could be that gw2 uses a feature of a driver that happens to trigger the error, but that is simply that gw2 happens to be the one thing you run that triggers it — not a gw2 fault.

Good luck tracking down and fixing the relevant driver.

Doesn't our Scepter GM seem... bad?

in Necromancer

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

I love the scepter GM, admitedly, to make it more optimal it’d be nice if that duration was scaled back a bit to maybe 25-30% range and something else was added to it for that trade off.

50% is quite too much and makes it too impractical to run builds that do not exceed condi duration caps on bleeds.

I have some great news: “Only the base durations are increased, thus not counting towards the maximum condition duration.”

That is, you can’t overcap duration due to that GM, it applies to the base duration which is then extended by the condition duration.

That is, not only do you not overcap, this is a separate multiplier, so it effectively double-dips on duration, meaning that you get 3x the (original) base duration with 100 percent condition duration, rather than 2×.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

It’s also possible the OP has simply completed more mastery points than they can possibly spend: I’m in that position. It comes from anet providing more than one way to obtain the mastery points, so players are not forced to do things they don’t want to.

That means for players who do most everything, you end up with more of them than you need. (Not that I mind that much. Meant I could buy all the LS3 masteries as soon as I gathered the XP, and then refill my mastery point count from the new ones on those maps at leisure…)

Map Instances

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

You don’t quite understand how the game works: there is not one bit of software involved in a map, there is one ANet server, and up to 150 different clients, all working on the same simulation at the same time, with latencies between them of up to 500ms on a good day.

Your client has the map data, yes, but the server is authoritative about everything, even if it happens to trust the client with some details such as what was being aimed at when the skill triggered. (Sometimes. This is, incidentally, true of every multi-player game out there.)

So … you don’t just have to have your client read the next bit of the map, you need the server to handle that. Right now that’s one process per map instance, with a bounded amount of space because of the zone boundaries, and with a bounded amount of actor involvement, because of the per-map player count limit.

TL:DR version:

I certainly understand the server’s role in computing results and handing them back.

You have missed the OP’s issue, which is "why can’t we have seamless zoning. "

If you make the zones smaller, the zoning will happen faster, until it appears seamless. No software changes needed, just map organization changes that need not be visible to the players. Arbitrarily choosing to make a huge area load at once gives us what we have now.

So close, but… nope. Riddle me this: when you say “seamless zoning”, do you imagine standing in one spot and looking out over an empty field, then walking ten feet and seeing a half dozen players right next to you — suddenly appearing from nowhere?

I can’t speak for you, obviously, but I’m willing to put money on the fact that isn’t what you expect: you think of a single, continuous world that looks like a current zone: you can see things to the limit of vision, and don’t usually get things randomly popping into existance you didn’t see before.

Unfortunately, while simply making zones smaller might help address the issue of a “continuous” world for static objects — mountains and houses — it wouldn’t address the need to have vision across the “zones”, for dynamic objects like players, NPCs, monsters, etc.

So, you wouldn’t just make the zones smaller, you would also need to ensure that the servers hosting the maps communicated appropriately across those zone boundaries for those dynamic things, which is a huge increase in complexity. (Also, has a performance cost, and requires additional memory and network bandwidth, and introduces a whole new category of synchronization issues and unpredictability in debugging.)

I know it’s really tempting to see this as a simple problem, but it’s absolutely not. Companies that build correct and functional seamless worlds have my admiration, because while it’s not an MMO, I work on distributed systems of comparable scale and it’s some of the hardest and most annoying problems out there.

How is such an important quest still SO buggy?!

Simple: it isn’t broken for everybody, and it’s not possible for the anet QA team to reproduce the issue internally.

Game freeze [likely DPS Meter related]

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Was having a similar issue, removing the dps meter worked. Has anyone submitted a ticket to let gw2 know this is a thing?

DPS meters are not supported by anet — they are very much hacks, but currently being tolerated by the gw2 security team, despite being a technical violation of the terms of service.

If they break, or break your game, you get to keep both pieces. ANet will simply tell you to remove the software and then report the problem if it happens without it.

If you do intend to run one, you should ensure that you are always keeping up with the latest update to it, and if you ever hit a crash, report it only to the DPS meter author rather than anet — or reproduce the crash without the meter installed.

(The same goes for anyone using GemFX, reshade, or other things that inject in the rendering path, too.)

Same issue here, it was fine until yesterday that with the new feature wvw update my ping went from normal (200) to not normal (700-1500). I’m in Sanctum of Rall paired with Henge of Denravi; also I live in Argentina, South America, and WvW is totally unplayable, my powers won’t work (until I’m either useless late or dead).

So my guess is something happened in server side.

It’s possible, but that sounds like it could be caused by intermittent network issues. https://www.pingplotter.com/fix-your-network is a good guide to tracking down where those originate from, and I’d encourage you to run through that process.

If it is in the anet network, or server side, filing a support ticket might be worthwhile — though they will first ask you do do exactly that sort of network diagnostic, so I’d suggest doing it first, and including the results in the initial ticket. Saves a round trip.

Screen Freezes

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

Screen freezes like that are not really a common symptom of DPS meter related issues — though it’s not impossible that they could cause it, since they usually inject themselves in the rendering path, so a bug could break that.

Anyway, I’d encourage y’all to investigate driver and/or hardware issues for this. It’s the most likely cause. The event logs might shed some light on the issue, too, if you have not yet checked those.

For others, reseating the video card, reducing overclocking, or improving power supply have helped.
