Rifts & Shadowstone quests left unfinished?

in Living World

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

We’ve only had one episode since then, so it’s not like it fell out of their radar completely and is now something that will never be finished.

According to Dulfy, the current events related to the rift line were added on October 4.
Episode 3 – A Crack in the Ice was released on November 21,
Episode 4 – The Head of the Snake was released on February 8.

Leaving the reddit posts aside, that’s 6 months, half a year without a patch referring to the rift story line. They created new plot lines or continued other ones instead. Plus, there are many examples for unfinished story parts, we still don’t know anything about Rytlock’s holiday in the mists. Later, cub.
I think that the rift events will be concluded with the current season but on the other hand it’s perfectly fine to ask what’s going on.

I never said it wasn’t fine to ask what’s going on, all I said was “there’s only been one episode since then” followed by “don’t lose hope just yet”. I do recognise the time difference. It is a drain on all of us waiting to hear about what’s going on, I never meant to downplay the worry, I was only trying to keep up hopes.

…also, remember this: we know from the developers that there is something yet undiscovered in the rifts, in game today. So… it’s not impossible they are waiting (forever, or perhaps just for some fixed time) for that to be found before they advance the story of the rifts?

Anyway, I’m pretty confident that you don’t invest that much in building a story element the size of the caladbolg stuff without some plan to complete it. It’s not impossible that they have to delay it, but it seems pretty unlikely it will actually just stop dead.

PS: my theory? GW2 looked at WoW doing the “return to alternate universe draenor in the past”, decided it was the coolest, and are going to use rifts to do the same thing in GW2.

PPS: my theory? GW2 decided to capture the playerbase from the “rifts” MMO, but for legal reasons they couldn’t actually play it, so they just added lots of rifts because why not?

i dont understand whats so bad about mounts?

My point here is not about mounts being bad. My point is mounts aren’t widely accepted.

Here is my proud summary about the subject.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-Mounts-in-GW2/first#post6352809

PS: I DO think they would be bad for the game IF they have an speed boost. But that’s not the theme here.

why would they be bad for the game if they had a speed boost exactly?

Ground mounts? Makes the movement speed traits redundant, which might reduce or increase build diversity, but fundamentally just comes down to “replace those with something else.”

I’ve personally no particular issue with ground mounts, movement speed boost or not, though faster than +33% travel does somewhat change the nature of some of the maps (eg: silverwastes) now that people can get between things sooner.

Flying mounts usually means “flying full time” as opposed to what we have with gliders, and ends up being “skip directly to the thing to do”, taking you out of the world. Might as well have “push button to get directly to world boss”, “push button to get to next one”.

Healing and buffing druid, PS warriors, and chronos are all loved in raids and other groups. (With some justification, and some magical thinking, behind it. Regardless, they are definitely popular.)

I think guardian is considered pretty solid with the elite spec and traps, but I’m not sure. They mostly don’t get talked about, so I’d guess they were “second class DPS”, most of the time.

I’m not sure how it is with other MMOs. But for ESO, if you bought the game before it was released on Steam, your account could not be transferred. You would have had to buy a NEW copy on Steam and make a new account.

That is pretty routine. I don’t know why, but my guess is that it’s because the game uses some sort of steam ID as part of authenticating or whatever — since you can definitely ship games requiring a third party account on steam.

(…and the developers used your email address or something concrete and meaningful as the primary key for identifying accounts, rather than an internal account ID with one-or-more external ways of identifying to it. dang developers, assuming that you have one stable way to prove identity on the internet. not that I have not made the same mistake in my time.)

I honestly think those social tools — calendar, votes — along with forums for guilds are best served by just using a Facebook group these days. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but it is a company dedicated and focused on making social things like that work.

Anything build in-game is going to be more or less terrible, honestly. Like, seriously, look at wow: the calendar is nothing to write home about, at best, and rarely used. You can’t add it to your phone, or google calendar, or outlook, or whatever. It’s clunky. Unloved.

As to the recruiting troubles, I’d suggest you continue to search outside the game for folks. It’s a pretty big gamble, in game, that you might find someone. If you really do want to go that path, though, shouting in the starter zones is probably the best bet.

SlippyCheeze.5483

I’d suggest that your best bet is arcdps or gw2helper — both of those seem to be developed with a careful eye to following the rules, closely, as set down by anet.

arcdps, by deltaconnect, also seems to have the best integration and relationship with anet, from my outside perspective.

regardless, as Illconceived said, none of them are strictly “legal”, but rather, in the grey area of anet saying that, yes, they will tolerate this, and at the moment they take the view that any non-complaint meter is more an issue of the author than the consumer of the tool.

if you do use one, I’d strongly suggest keeping an eye out for changes to these positions, but … it’s very unlikely, right now, that using either of the two tools I named will lead to an account ban.

Are you sure its not coz you’re sound settings aren’t saving? Since the sound update my sound settings won’t save changes. Have you checked if the mute item chatter has unchecked itself because you logged out unsaving the option? It’s under the player chatter box so it may have looked like it was checked when you looked again.

I had double checked before I made the first post, and just did again; yep it’s checked. Still having the bugs. Also add the mad scientists harvesting tool to the list. Heard it from a player next to me as we gathered up some potatoes in Dissa a few days ago.

I’m really not sure the “Mad Scientists” tools were intended to be included — they don’t include any voice, just a “vacuum” sound for plants, lightning for trees, and laser-ish for metals. They definitely don’t say anything. (I say, as a user of them, who also finds the “you jumped” an infuriating thing…)

HTTP+JSON doesn’t meant it has to be a web app. It can be a CRON job that periodically curls or a Graphite integration.

Interesting that ArenaNet had this in mind already.

You are misreading on two fronts here:

First, the comments about HTTP/JSON vs anything else were about the complexity on the server side, not the consumer side. Your response deals with the consumer side.

Second, anet have given absolutely no indication of what, if any, thoughts they have on the subject. (Unless you mean the references to the terms of service, in which case that is more generic “everything is forbidden, unless it is permitted”.)

Is this practic allowed by Anet?

Being AFK is not allowed. However, you need to hit three criteria for it to be a problem:

1. You are in an area where there is profit from your activity.
2. You are using some sort of skill or something.
3. You are unresponsive when a GM contacts you, or otherwise determined to actually be “not present”, rather than “sitting there and not paying much attention.”

Note that this does not include “you are unresponsive when other players contact you”, so there is no way for you, as a player, to know if this is breaking the rules.

Your best bet is, as indicated, report the player for botting: target them, right click the character icon, select report, and select the “botting” category. anet will handle it from there.

Latency for a satellite connection will be painful. It used to be in the 600 to 700ms range, which is fine for bulk transfer, and absolutely unplayable for games. I’m not sure it has reduced much since 2012 — the last time I looked — but since most of that comes from physics, I wouldn’t bet on it.

I’d honestly find out if you can get data via mobile LTE, too, but that or “Internet25” should either by completely fine for your needs.

The difference between Ascended gear and Exotic gear, I’m told, isn’t a really huge one. Most guides I’ve read say Exotic is perfectly fine to go on.

It is somewhere between five and ten percent, for most classes. However, the guides are absolutely correct: the only content that is mechanically impossible to complete without ascended gear is high tier fractals, due to the agony mechanic leading to 100 percent health per second loss without sufficient agony resist — which can only be added via ascended gear.

It is possible, though more challenging, to complete raids in exotic gear, and to do the first tier of fractals without any ascended at all. You can get through the entire second tier, too, on only ascended rings, trinkets, and an ascended back, since that gives you a cheap path to 7 slots for AR, making for 63 AR using the (recommended) +9 AR infusions.

So … it’s a nice thing to work toward, but exotic gear is good enough that you won’t miss it until you want to do the highest end PvE content in the game.

The megaserver is an algorithm problem and is simple for someone who is very very competent. I mean, if Jeffrey Dean from Google would tackle this megaserver issue, it would be trivial and he would have a solution in a few hours.

cough I can absolutely, with certainly, inform you that if you said that during an interview at Google when talking about distributed systems design, it’d put you in the bucket of “failed the interview” pretty quickly. Like, that’s pretty unrecoverable, even if you back down the system in future.

Much as you might think that there is a simple, intuitive solution to the problem, I assure you that it is neither simple nor intuitive once you get into the details designing for it — let alone implementing it effectively.

This is also exacerbated by the fact that anet operate at a scale that is at least a million times smaller than google — so the granularity of anything you can tune is really, really coarse compared to what can be done on large scale distribution systems there.

There are no changes in DirectX 12 that fundamentally change the efficiency of the intermediate layer between the game engine and the hardware.

There are changes that eliminate some choke-points that heavily threaded game engines encountered when trying to build scenes from multiple threads.

Everything you suggest about changing threads is entirely true if the GW2 engine remains on DX9, moves to DX11, to DX12, to Vulkan, to Metal, or whatever. None of it revolves around offloading work to the GPU.

Maybe Anet shouldn’t have dropped support on the current Mac client considering that the native port seems to take years to develop and the current Cider version crashes every 5 minutes.

There’s not really anything ArenaNet can do with the current Mac client. They paid another company to develop it and that company long since sold their porting technology to Nvidia. ArenaNet can’t update or support the current Mac client because they didn’t develop it and the company that did sold Cider, hence the situation we’re now in where they’re developing a new client themselves.

Note: they can update it, since it follows patches, but they can’t make fundamental changes — including moving to 64-bit — without a rewrite of some description. Which is what they are doing.

Dungeons

SlippyCheeze.5483

I enjoyed the dungeons provided in the game, but I seem to be the minority in that train of thought and wondering if we are every going to see new dungeons introduced in the future on expansions or are Fractals and Raids the only thing in the future?

Dungeons, along submarine combat and -to some extent- PvP and WvW is abandoned content.

It would be more correct to say that dungeons were retained for legacy reasons, and that fractals replaced them. At this stage all signs point to this continuing to be the direction anet carry small group content, along with new open world challenges.

Underwater combat is not “abandoned”, but rather, it is retained only as a small portion of maps, because it presents challenges to the enjoyment of players. Since the ones mentioned in red posts have all been identical to the problems faced by 3D “flying” combat in other games (cough wow), it’s likely this is because players mostly don’t enjoy trying to fight underwater — and not because the skills are underdeveloped, but because it’s hard to deal with three dimensional positioning of enemies.

PvP and WvW see active and constant development effort. Saying they are abandoned flies directly in the face of all available evidence. You can say you don’t like the developments, or that you think anet are not doing a good job with those game modes, but seriously … “abandoned” something that has seen changes to queuing, MMR, reward models, new maps, new achievements, and significant player interaction directly with the developers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

of course, it wouldn’t be enough to just upgrade to a newer version of directx. there would need to be a way for the game to actually utilize the gpu more

I think that’s about the simplest way to put it. Moving to DX12 alone would have a negligible impact on performance, but could lead to other changes with the engine that do help. Being able to offset the CPU bound nature of current DX9 engine by allowing the currently underutilized GPU to handle more of the work. The issue is the amount of work involved and the high chance of introducing new problems with such a massive rewrite.

You misunderstand: GW2 is CPU-bound because it has a single CPU thread that does work required to calculate and position objects in the 3D world. This is not something that can be offloaded to the GPU (easily).

It is also something that, if fixed, would allow higher GPU utilization with DirectX 9, as the DX layer is not what is causing the performance limitation here.

Game is still busy, still has stuff to do. Fractals replaced dungeons, PvP and WvW are still there and busy, etc.

Dungeons are much less busy than they used to be, but I never have much trouble rounding up people for them if I try. Everything else is easy to pug, except perhaps raids, but that’s a “people want what the best raid guild does, nothing else” problem, not a lack of people problem.

Costs for legendaries are probably a bit lower than they were, and where the money goes has moved around. Crafting is still used for ascended gear, which remains the top tier. (Save legendary, which is a prettier version of, just as it was.)

I have 3 computers, a smartphone, and a tablet. It ONLY happens on the computer I’m playing GW2 on, the other devices are all fine. It’s not my router. My firewall is set to allow all connections from the GW2 application, and I also run it as Administrator. When I get dc’ed or dos’ed or whatever it is, I also can’t visit websites. The quickest solution I have is to immediately disconnect and reconnect from the internet from the toolbar, everything magically works after and I can usually get back into the same instance.

This isn’t on my end. Seems like Anet is sending me bad packets and causing a bandwidth traffic jam on my computer (can’t think of the term). Hopefully Anet will admit that this is their responsibility and fix the problem.

Everything that you describe there is congruent with one of two things, either a communication problem related to your modem, or to the immediate connection between your modem and the ISP network.

GW2 servers are not sending some magically bad packet to you, but instead, you are experiencing something that sounds very much like either the modem slowing to a crawl, or the connection causing the same effect.

There are, in fact, almost no cases where a “bad packet” or “bad connection” could cause the effect described alone — and none of them are part of routine, normal communication. The odds that GW2 accidentally triggered a problem like you describe approximate zero, and deliberately… yeah, no.

I’d strongly encourage you to investigate that issue, rather than waiting for anet to fix a problem that we can pretty confidently say cannot be related to GW2, and so will never be within their power to correct.

Only new API that is worth adding is Vulkan, that would really help in situations (especially for slower computers) where there’s a lot of draw calls – like WvW for example.

Vulkan and DirectX 12 would have the same effect and would help with that … if, and only if, multiple concurrent threads are working on building the graphics stuff to submit. eg: also engine rewrite territory to take advantage of either of them.

The common complaint is that greatsword attacks are slow-but-heavy, and telegraph a lot, so it’s easy for people to avoid them. You obviously also give up range. YMMV, try it.

It’s not like the meta builds are actually that important for most players. Until you are, like, fighting over #1 on the ladder, it’s highly likely that your DPS varies more based on how many mistakes you make than on the mechanical differences between weapons and builds.

Theres no point to this post. Its way too late for Anet to change what legendary weapon they want to release next tuesday, if it is the sword then this post had no effect, if it isn’t the sword then no one at Anet could possibly get the sword out instead.

Its not a serious post.

Sadly, the problem with your joke is that it was completely indistinguishable from the people who would seriously ask for this, and expect it to be done.

i mean its less than a week before the release i dont expect anyone srsly to ask this now

hahaha, yeah. I used to be an optimist too, but people beat that out of me. See also “my demands for xpac 2” posts at this point in the development cycle…

Can we ever get decent build options ?

I hate to say it, but … that’s really “I’d like a different game”, in more words. I understand your position, but I don’t think it’s really something that is within the scope of GW2.
