Living Story Spec

in Necromancer

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

The “fractal” specs you will find on qtfy.eu or metabattle are designed to deal with relatively short-lived enemies with limited defenses, and comparatively weak bosses. That is a pretty solid description of what you will face during the living story.

You may end up trading some of the things for utility (eg: signet of the locust) or defense (eg: the caudicus fight) when you need them, but it’s pretty easy to figure out where it falls short, starting from that damage oriented spec.

I know it’s kind of off topic, but there is no way to use the OpenGL renderer on Windows, is there? Us Wine players would really appreciate that… There’s dozens of us! Dozens!

Currently there is not. Despite OpenGL being cross-platform there are a lot of differences between platforms (available extensions, API conformance, etc). We tried it briefly but additional work would be required to get it working properly, and we already have our hands full with the macOS client.

Linux WINE players probably want to invest some time and effort in https://wiki.ixit.cz/d3d9 instead — though I believe it will not work with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, so spring those $$$ for AMD

it has gone down so many times now I have lost count.. I have restarted everything.. I have done this one Story so many times.. I have given up hope on ever finishing it… its dropping and says Network error.. I can’t even anymore… i can’t even..

I understand it’s hard to find the motivation to keep trying to debug a strange problem.

Can you follow the guide at https://www.pingplotter.com/fix-your-network and/or just run pingplotter and post the results at the time of the problem?

Assuming it’s still happening; there was a bunch of instability after the recent patch, which if you are not having the issue any more, probably means the problem is resolved.

Black screen and crashing randomly in game

SlippyCheeze.5483

I’ve been having problems lately with random black screen with sound, then computer crashing to shutdown. Have to start it up again, then it says it recovered from a BSOD (with no BSOD ever showing). Only showing this in game. Just also started crashing on sleep. If I don’t put it to sleep or go into game I’m fine.

Running Win7, 8g RAM, i5 processor, MSI z87-g45 gaming MB, NVidia geForce 750ti GPU.

The BSOD mini-dump consistently shows the same error: Address ntoskrnl.exe+70e40, IRQL not less or equal.

That reports a driver issue. (Specifically, some bit of hardware yelled “yo, pay attention to MEEEEE” at the CPU, and the driver that was supposed to handle it … didn’t. That’s the tl;dr version of what “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” translates to.)

The smartest approach is probably a clean reinstall, but you could try uninstalling various hardware drivers or disabling devices to see if you can track down which one is responsible.

There are three things you can do here, if you want to progress:

1. File a support ticket with anet, work with their support to see if anything can be done.

2. Try a VPN of some sort to see if you can route around the problem.

3. Post here where the problem is, based on those troubleshooting steps, and see if we can help you out.

Also, your short list and comment about ISP suggest you probably did something akin to what the pingplotter guide covers, but if you have not done that yet to narrow down where on the path the problem happens, that’s a good next step too.

GDE detects 7 games and shows 6 cards, Guild Wars 2 is missing.

This is almost certainly an NVIDIA issue, not a GW2 issue; those presents are distributed and supplied by NVIDIA — even if they get input from the authors — and so it’s on them to update to recognise the newest client, etc.

Will HoT be free with next Expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

SlippyCheeze.5483

I’ll rather not set a foot in that whole hot expansion mess.
Any news about new expansion here btw? All I saw was some obscure leaked data and not all of the info was great to be honest.

What we have is that the plan to release it in essentially the same timeframe as LW, alowing for a bit more time as it is an expansion after all.
So, next episode sometime during july/v early august; expansion towards the end of the year, maybe? Probably more info coming with/after last LW3 ep. Then LW4 a couple months after expansion.

(All of that from the Flashpoint AMA at reddit.)

Thanks, I can’t wait. I loved this game until Hot made it too bad for me to continue.

I really, really don’t think you will find the new post-HoT content better than the HoT expansion was. I’m afraid that pretty much everything in the LS3 episodes has been recognisably similar to the HoT content, and strongly suggests that is the path of the xpac.

This game is beautiful but only at 1920 by 1080. I hope Anet will prioritize this. This game deserves to be enjoyed with the current technology. I know some will repond about how this game is using older tech, but seriously if they want to make money they should adjust as did WOW and others that have older tech engines.

I’m a little surprised you needed to go so far down. I find the “normal” size interface perfectly readable at 2560×1440, and have not tried the “large” size, but I’d imagine it was usable at a higher resolution than that, even. Maybe not the full 4k, sure, but at least at 1440p for you.

As to the argument about how much money this is worth, I’d strongly suggest that in future you avoid that line in trying to support your position: you (and I) don’t have the information that anet do about how much money comes in, goes out, or where it lands.

Without that, it’s just a guess, and guessing about what will or won’t make money for anet really isn’t a winning way to support a position.

Instead, focus on things like experience, fun, etc, just as you did at the start by explaining you love the look of the game, and want to experience the finer detail.

2-3 gold per shard?

yeah I’m rich (you know)

(eh no you are not little asura)

The table is misleading. In order to get the 2+ gold per shard, you need to craft some ultra-expensive items which initially ties up hundreds of gold. Once you complete crafting the item, then you need to play the TP game where you list the item, only to see other players undercut your price by 1 copper over and over. If you try to relist, you automatically lose 10s of gold each time. If you stand pat, your item may never sell, meaning you’ve essentially lost all those hundreds of gold you invested to craft the item.

cough instant-sell exists, but also, so does selling for more than a 1c discount on the next highest price. If you are really concerned about being undercut, just sell at 10g or more below the price … just like if you relisted once. Reduces undercutting quite a bit…

Note that unlike the precedent set in Bitterfrost only the character that does the initial fight can use the portal. Which means the precedent was not much of one.

This is true, but potentially misleading: ANY character that does the initial fight can use the portal, but only a character who has done the initial fight can use it.

That is: the portal requires completing the story stage on that character to operate.

Constant Crashing + PC Restart

SlippyCheeze.5483

THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE NOR DRIVER ISSUE.
I have been play the game for 4 years, this Constant Crashing only happen 3 weeks ago after the ‘WINDOWS 10 CREATOR’ update. If you don’t have win 10 you will not have this issue, so please stop telling people to update driver/hardware. Anet was try to patch this a few times, the 6/8 patch fix most of the issues, but then 6/9 patch mess up more then ever. I having crashing 5-15 min, sometimes if I change map I crash, sometimes if I use waypoint I crash. Anet really need to fix this for now this is totally unplayable for me

It is unlikely Windows 10 creators update cause the crash itself. If it was the cause, there will be a gigantic megathread warning everybody to not update.

The reason why we are pretty quick to blame hardware/driver issues is that Anet already have a gigantic Q/A team. I assume they vet all patches before distributing it to the user, but they are unable to test all configurations

The biggest source of crashing around that update was actually third party tools that inject into the D3D display pipeline. Things like Riva Stats Server, AMD AfterBurner, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, etc, along with some subset of VoIP client overlays.

It seems that something was changed in a way that they stopped working with — my guess, they were doing something that wasn’t strictly API supported, and a chance to the D3D build broke whatever internals they were poking into or something.

Anyway, that’s been the biggest cause of fixed crashing issues for people who report them after Windows 10 updates, followed by hardware problems, followed by driver updates (or, in a couple of cases, downgrades.)

Despite soloez’s insistance that they ABSOLUTELY KNOW THE CAUSE, THEY JUST WON’T SHARE IT WITH ANYONE, the fact remains that when folks come here looking for help, and report back what fixed it, those are the biggest hits at the moment.

Oh, uh, and just for the record … I’m running Windows 10, fully updated, and having zero of these problems. It’s just an anecdote, of course, at one sample, but … it’s enough for me to feel that I have proof by counterexample to your assertion that it can only possibly be the Windows 10 + GW2 combination, and that anet must take action to correct it.

Unsure about 100% condi duration

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

However, there are exceptions. For example necro GM Scepter trait. It adds 50% extar bleed duration, which increases base, not the total. So your scepter applied bleed can go up to 150% and the tooltip will reflect this as a total.

This is not true. The Necromancer trait (and the comparable engineer trait) applies to the base duration of the effects, prior to the condition duration multiplier being calculated.

This means two things: one, that condition duration above 100 percent is still a waste, and two, that you get extra bonus value, because instead of 100 percent duration == 200 percent of base, it’s now 300 percent of the “base time without the trait”, yay!

In-game forums are going to inevitably be worse than out-of-game forums, and anet are not specialised developers of forum software.

You would be much, much better using an existing solution for this, out of game, and letting folks interact with it how they prefer.

Both discord and Facebook groups are excellent choices, though they function differently. Both are commonly used by people who play MMOs, etc, for other reasons.

Dedicated web forums are terrible choices. They have extremely poor utility, and add another place people need to go hunt for things – most members will never bother, compared to seeing, eg, a post show up in the facebook feed they were reading anyway.

As a 4K user (in windowed mode so that I can get to my browser easily), I do hope they spend some time improving it.

While probably hard to measure, I do wonder if it indirectly hurts sales – someone decides to give the free version of GW2 a try, and after dealing with the poor interface on 4K, decide to give up/not spend any money for the full version, and instead spend their time & money on a game that does support 4K well.

I’m certain it does. I’m equally certain that anet have looked at the demand for 4K support, the lost sales from not supporting 4K, the effort required to add it, and concluded that it is not, at the moment, worth more than it would cost.

I mean, do you really think that anet — who pay people full time to work out how to make enough money from the game — have failed to think of this?

Now, if you think the costs are likely to be have been underestimated, or you have some insight that might help explain why that cost will increase in the near future, this’d be a great time to lay out it…

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

SlippyCheeze.5483

Please fix this bug: Since the release of LSW3 Episode 5, Retreat causes the Guardian to auto-attack the nearest red (i.e., enemy) or yellow (i.e., neutral) target, which is completely counter-productive as hitting a target results in the character’s movement speed to slow down (because “in combat”).

I am pretty certain that this is a recent thing and did not happen before aforementioned patch.

P.S. I had to deactivate auto-targetting because of this problem, which had never been an issue before.

This has been an issue since launch. I gave up reporting it after the third year or so.

Really?? Wow… That is a sad testimony of bug fixing then.

I’d suggest that, perhaps, you are mistaking “working as intended” for “failure to fix a bug”. If anet don’t see this as wrong, because it is the intended function (ever if we don’t like it), not “fixing” it makes sense, no?

Constant Crashing + PC Restart

SlippyCheeze.5483

I am running a new iMac with loads of memory and excellent NVIDIA GeForce GTX.
All the Blizzard games run with no problems at all.
GW2 keeps crashing randomly with either random reboot, computer freezes or game restart .
It is not a driver issue nor a heating issue. The only possibility is that the developers have not yet addressed all the Mac compatibility requirements.
For me it is so frustrating that I am considering quitting the game until such time as the SW is sorted.

It is entirely within the realm of possibility for Blizzard games to work perfectly fine™ on macOS, and GW2 to cause it to crash, due to hardware or driver issues. All that requires is that whatever feature in the driver has the bug, or whatever triggers the hardware fault, only happens with GW2.

That could include:

  • using different generations of API (eg: DX9 vs DX11)
    * using different driver API (eg: OpenGL, DirectX, Metal, etc)
    * using different hardware features
    * working the graphics hardware harder

For example, we know that GW2 has a much higher bus load than many other games when it comes to shipping data to and from the graphics card. That implies it also works the GPU memory harder, which means that it could, eg, reveal failures that other games don’t from overclocking (or marginal) hardware.

Having other games work correctly definitely helps suggest that common factors (eg: heat levels) are not at fault, but it cannot conclusively rule out either hardware or software problems.

Because other than raids, reaper is doing pretty much fine for most people, most of the time. Even in raids, it’s a respectable DPS, and brings some valuable but not widely valued recovery utility that can help get people up after a mistake and reduce the cost of that.

(IDK why the whole in-combat rez thing that WoW has doesn’t seem to have caught on in GW2 raids, but it’s definitely a valued and useful thing over there. Can’t see why it wouldn’t be here too, if the community get their head around the idea that it shouldn’t be one mistake == one wipe.)

Nah, WoW have “ten percent of gold earned through dailies” automatically credited to the guild bank, and they are not dead. In fact, the guild market is booming!

Every starter zone is full of guilds trying very hard to gather as many members as possible. Not because they actually do anything, those guilds, or because they like people, or whatever.

It’s entirely possible that GW2 is the only thing you run that happens to trigger it, but that doesn’t mean it’s “at fault”, just that it happens to be the thing showing up the underlying issue.

I’d suggest you start with ensuring the cards are seated correctly, bridges and power connected properly, your power supply is delivering appropriate voltage, cooling is working as expected, etc.

[Suggestion] Necro GS2 Oval instead of Circle

So, instead of the overly-used 360 aoe, I suggest changing it to effect enemies in front and behind, like a heavy overhead swing. The whirl effect would still apply (the animation would look something like an overhead down, continue around to the flank and overhead again.

Why? Well, the 360 aoe is redundant on a reaper since there is already the built-in RS4 which is a continuous spin to win.

Furthermore, and the more important reason is to speed it up. narrowing the aoe should relieve the skill of its hefty cast time animation. It would also make the skill more unique and require a little more directional awareness.

Anways, just a suggestion.

FWIW, if your end goal is to have the attacks be faster, you would be better off arguing about why that is useful alone. This suggestion, as it stands, essentially presupposes that anet agree that it is useful, desirably, and good for the game to speed up the attack — and the only blocker is figuring out a way to make that work with the animations.

So, to help this be more likely to be implemented:

Why would it be good to have faster attack animations for that reaper GS skill?

Additions to Material Storage

I understand the reluctance to add things because you can’t remove them (although why a system of mailing it back to people couldn’t work, like with the removed PvP stuff, is another question). But the posts repeatedly make reference to programming issues with adding things. How was mat storage set up, programmatically speaking, that it is causing issues adding more items?

Perhaps you missed the post by Lindsey where she explained the process, but … find it and read it, just the first post, before you finish with this comment.

Now, having done that, did you notice how there was one item on the list annotated with “<—- the easy part” ? I sure did.

…and it was the “implementation” of this. eg: it’s not technically difficult to put stuff into materials storage, full stop. It’s actually the easiest part of the whole project.

She did identify that some things were more technically difficult to put in there, which is likely down to how they are consumed in the game — as an example, crafting can consume from materials storage, right? If an item is used by an NPC, the code that manages that interaction needs to be able to consume from materials storage; that isn’t necessarily free, nor is it necessarily easy to implement.

That only hits a subset of things that have, effectively, “dual use”, in the game though.

Any legendary weapons sigil swap?

They have answered, the answer was they are not planning on it.

Also, that it was considered more economically complex than armor runes were, so even if they did start thinking about it, it’d be a longer run than this was to get it into play.
