cough you know that you can find groups that don’t demand you play in a way you don’t like, right? I’d suggest hunting for them. Sounds like a good deal to me, finding a guild that won’t make you play in a way you don’t want to.

Rumor has it that we get dagger MH for the next xpac, in what will highly likely be a DPS oriented spec, finally freeing us from being “the” healer. (Despite other classes, looking at you ele, having some serious healing chops of their own.)

What is a "Tank"

As a rule of thumb, there are no “tanks” in GW2. It’s not an applicable concept most of the time.

Even in raid encounters, where Xiahou Mao is correct they do exist, it is not the classic “tank” role in other games. It’s entirely reasonable to have a few people fill the role, swapping out, and it’s not about standing still and being hit a lot.

The fact that cloth wearers are the current common “tanks” probably helps cement that.

Don’t forget to check LFG and see if someone advertises an SW event map. Those are usually the best bet for getting lots of players working to get everything going well, which means a greater chance of legendary spawns.

You can also just list in LFG for it, since it requires no real leadership, but might bring other players to the yard.

If it’s only the cloth armor at the moment, it’s still cloth.

Without linking people just bandwagon around to whatever the top servers are.

It is almost as if the moment you make it possible for people to transfer to the “winning” group, they do.

PS: before you say “no transfers”, remember that people will purchase new accounts and/or delete all characters in order to effect this transfer, if necessary.

…or something very similar to that. You definitely don’t need to have more than 1APS to deliver way more than 1 source of damage. Not that, y’know, it hurts (the thief) to hit moar buttonz.

You skipped what “shouldPopulateRed” does, which is the most important thing to understand here. That is:

def shouldPopulateRed(red, blue, config):
  if red.players >= config.teamSize:
    return False
  if blue.players >= config.teamSize:
    return True
  return red.ratingLow < blue.ratingLow

That actually prefers filling the lower rated first, so depending how it picks the players to place, it’s not even just filling one team or another, it’s filling whatever has the lowest rating first.

For that … it’s detailed, but

scoreRoster
is what matters, in that each potential candidate is evaluated in order to determine what the best match for the group is, based on a whole lot of things.

matchmaking?

How big are your MMR changes after a match? If they are still in the 40 to 50 range, the answer to your complaint is likely that the MMR system has not yet figured out your correct MMR.

I am at ~100 matches played this season and I’m still getting 40 point swings…..

That’s uncommonly large, so perhaps something outside your own abilities are causing you to unexpectedly win or lose matches a lot. Playing in low-pop hours, or duo queues with mismatched MMR could do it, because both put extra pressure on the system to find matches quickly rather than well.

It also encourages the most recently found actual bug, which was the substitutions because of people not match-ready could lead to an issue with the team composition, and that is going to be more pronounced during low queue activity times.

Also, class-swapping could be an issue, in the sense that if you regularly play two or three classes for which you have different skill levels, you would have more variance.

Otherwise, that might start to tend toward the point that it’s worth making your own top level post asking about why your MMR is still so volatile after so many matches.

It’s not impossible there is a bug causing that – but it’s also not /that/ many matches past what should be a good estimate (~ 89 calculations) from the MMR system, so it could be that you started out wildly out of place and that has slowed down convergence.

So, yeah, top level post it and ask why your MMR variance is still so high. That’s an interesting thing to investigate.

Given this games track record, why on earth would i assume that?.

O_o. I’m sorry. I kind of assumed that someone who though the game was bad, and being changed by people who would only make it worse, would be bright enough to maybe … IDK … play something else?

I mean, seriously, if that is your honest opinion of the state of the game, and the likely future changes, why would you stay? Do you like the pain that much?

Anyway, I’d suggest you assume it because it’s both true, and reasonable.

I had two aweful loss streaks after working myself up. Result is i am at about 200 games and barely moved up. And there is not much learing in steamroll games. It feel like the MM system slows your progress and makes it grinding.

Delivering rewards based on skill (of which MMR is an algorithmically maintained approximation) rather than time spent (which is what the previous seasons gave) …

…well, it leads to exactly what you describe: you reach the MMR that matches your skill level, compared to all the other PvP players, and you more or less stay there.

The only way to change it is to improve your skills, which is hard work, and takes time and practice.

The matchmaking system, and the MMR which drives it, will lead to what feels like a grind to get higher “categories” than the old system, in which you gained them by winning, and never went backwards, so that one lucky win or carry could push you way above your actual skill level.

SlippyCheeze.5483

What you want is to be blocked from the other players. What the Block function does, here and in other programs, is block other players’ chat, etc. from you.

It’s not that uncommon of a way for block functions to work. You want something more like being invisible to others as a block function.

FWIW, bidirectional block is absolutely what people assume the feature does, until taught otherwise, online. This was a painful lesson in user expectations that held as true fifteen years ago as five when I worked places that investigated it.

So, I’d have expected that blocking someone made us both (completely) invisible to the other, and so would most people, if I hadn’t gone through the experience of seeing that learned through investigating what actual users believed block would do…

It’s far from the only software feature that engineers design to do XYZ, but customers expect will do ABC or even XYZ+. We think we speak the same language; sometimes we forget that ‘block’ can mean different things, depending on the context.

Thankfully that single problem is no longer my entire day job, but yeah, it’s for sure a thing!

Actually in 90% of games we win from start even 200 points, then enemy thief takes close point and someone decide to stay on it… so i can go afk because i know we will lose. I have these people 90% of matches. I don’t understand why. Is not it obvious? Or they can’t count to 5? Why people think others must carry them? Do they read “special” guide to pvp with advices like “stay close for win”?

Have you tried … saying something? cough and because some people are precious, something that isn’t insulting. cough

I’d guess that, in fact, what they have done is read absolutely no guides, just come in and tried to figure out how to win while playing PvP.

“I’m going to stand on this point-earning spot and prevent the enemy from taking it away from us” seems like a reasonable position to take, in fact, as does “I’ll die to prevent the enemy capturing this point-earning spot”, on the face of them.

So, yeah, if you think (or know) it’s the wrong strategy, say something nice, and tell them /why/ they should do something else. Then see if you still have the same problem.

Either XP / Spirit shards is a reward or it isn’t. If it is useless, remove it for everyone like other MMOs do at cap. If it is not useless, don’t gate it behind Masteries. Masteries should be their own reward.

Not to be objectionable, but I don’t see why they should be?

I mean, I understand and accept that you don’t think they should be something you need to complete before getting the reward. I just have no idea why these are special.

It’s not like other things (elite spec, and masteries) are not gated behind other things (level 80, hero points) already, so it’s hardly new that the second levelling chain needs to be finished before you get more rewards…

but I’m too much of a scrub to figure out how to make OBS record without lagging out for 2s at a time.

Three things are likely key here:

One, use a GPU-based encoder, such as NVENC. Using a software encoder is less dire for GW2 than many games, because GW2 uses just over one core, but it is still far from optimal in terms of cache busting, etc.

Two, make sure you have enough memory that you are not swapping during the recording process.

Three, make sure that the recording is output to a different drive to what GW2 resides on – a separate physical spindle – even for an SSD. It’s more pronounced on spinning rust, but even on an SSD a “heavy” write load (like, say, a video stream) can lead to delays for various reasons on input, which can lead to lag like that.

(heavy in scare-quotes because it’s really not that big, but some SSDs still have nasty log collection latency internally that can lead to .5 second or longer delays at times, etc, under write load. fun times.)

I agree however it also really bothers me how crappy the rating gains are. I have won matches vs top rank 1 before, but even if you win vs duoqs that are so much higher rated than you are, you still gain almost nothing in comparison. The rating gap is so huge yet it is absolutely unrewarding to win vs such teams and extremely punishing to lose vs them. For some reason the system assumes 1700 equals 2200 when it calculates rating gains/losses – wth?

Your mistake is that you believe – incorrectly – that rating loss or gain is related to the MMR of your team vs the other time.

MMR changes are based on two things:

The first is the “win or lose” prediction from the respective MMRs vs the actual win or lose, which determines if you gain or lose MMR from this fight.

The second is how confident the MMR system is of your ranking, which determines how big the change is. So, a large MMR change means the system thinks you are far from your correct MMR, and a small change means it thinks you are close to your correct MMR.

Which is to say: your result was close to the expected result, like most of them have been recently, leading to high confidence your MMR is correct, leading to small changes as a result of the outcome of the fight.

… and stay afk on it. Should i report him for:

1) Idle player
2) Match Manipulation
3) Botting

Any of them will work, but I’d suggest that “idle player” for an idle player is the best choice. It’s not like ANet will discard the wrong category entirely, but the odds that they look at it and discard a “botting” report because they don’t match some automated “are they botting” criteria like “uncommonly good accuracy or timing”, etc, are non-zero.

Noone looks into the reports so don’t bother.

You … should probably not play GW2 any longer, if you actually believe this. If the company don’t care, like you say, then things are just about to go directly to un-fun-ville in a kitten-cart, fast.

Because people respond mostly to the expectation of being caught when it comes to deciding to cheat, or not to cheat, and if nobody acts on reports then it will become super-common, super-fast.

But how to punish players who do it in every match?

ANet will take away their account if they persist. Report them. You can’t punish them, and you can’t know what their punishment – if anything – was, or when it will be delivered, but you can report them, and trust that ANet will do something.

(If, in fact, they are doing something wrong. Your description certainly sounds clear, but without being there we can’t be certain. Other people likely make the same claims when a player is actually, y’know, trying to help or whatever. Just poorly.)

season 6 mm suggestion

SlippyCheeze.5483

To me the biggest thing is still matchmaking. I think the system is way better than it was in S1-S5. Grind based rewards are separated from skill based ratings and you can see your MMR now. However, there are still issues (maybe just perceived) that need to be addressed: both match manipulation and the decisions behind the system that actually make the matches. To me the most important things to focus on for matchmaking are more transparency on skill ratings for who we are playing with/against, knowing what we want the match maker to do, and to eliminate in game tools that can be used for match manipulation.

  1. Show all individual’s stats and MMR + gain/loss at the end of the match.
—This will allow people to give fact based feedback, and see for themselves if the match making is working as intended.

…but it won’t, my friend, it won’t. We already have the pseudocode and constants used by PvP stuff, and the MMR display, and people still complain that it’s broken, they don’t understand it.

They also demonstrate that, eg, they firmly believe that the change in MMR is related to the MMR of the other team, not the expected win/loss and their own volatility, with comments such as “we shouldn’t lose 45 MMR for a loss against a higher MMR team”, etc.

Your suggestion is an “economist” suggestion: it would be absolutely correct, if only we were not all fluffy, kitten-headed kittens who made decisions, and hold beliefs, for all sorts of irrational reasons.

Bittterfrost frontier afk farming.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

The way I understand ToS and RoC, if you report an afk farmer for botting, you’re putting your account in risk of suspension or termination, not theirs.

What they’re referring to are instances of people submitting false reports for the sake of trying to get someone banned for personal reasons. For example, if I make up a vague, sketchy report in hopes of getting someone banned out of revenge, then yeah, my account would be at risk. The main problem with all of this is that Anet is really big on not wanting to be held accountable for mistakes, being way to vague when it comes to what’s legit and what isn’t and being liberal when it comes to putting the hammer down.

They are vague because the more clear your rules are, the more people abuse that by pointing out that their abuse was not technically a violation. Which is why, you will find, every single MMO has a clause that is basically “…and if we say you suck for doing it, it’s an bannable offense, no matter anything else.”

The truth is, though, as you say: good faith reports are not going to be a problem for the person doing the reporting. It’s only when they are not in good faith and/or in such a volume that they seem abusive, that it’s gonna be an issue.

Which, in my own experience where running around actively gathering stuff can lead to whispers of “kitten you you kitten kitten kitten afk farmer!!!1!” from people, could actually happen to some of the “everyone bots and afk farms except me” folks.

PS: Yes, I don’t know why it was AFK farmer instead of bot, but hey, I guess they don’t pay them enough to correct the whisper they sent to the last person when they move on to abusing the next target.

The did kindly inform me that being unhappy about what they called me was stupid, and I should be /grateful/ they are doing the service of insulting people via whispers in order to drive away robots though.

This ^^^^ – outside of the very pinnacle of things, everything is viable. I’m one hundred percent confident that you could complete everything up to and including raids using a shield on any of the classes that use them.

In some cases it is even highly desirable (mesmers, looking at you) for some mechanics, though not mandatory.

The biggest problem you would face is that people will whine about the build not being listed on metabattle in pugs, really. That’s kinda about it.

So, yeah, they are absolutely viable. Also, useful, and also effective.

(When I say “pinnacle of things” I mean things like 4-person raid completions, or the top end of the top ladder in rated pvp, where skill on both sides has pretty much approached infinity, so tiny numbers differences between specs and weapons actually make enough of a difference to matter.)

And you actually bring up another “silent” issue. The armor classes themselves. Soloing an enemy on a Warrior isn’t just easier because it’s a Warrior but because Warriors naturally have the most defense. Since defense is a divider every point of it counts so the 304 point difference in ascended armor is huge. That’s literally 24% 15% of the heavy armor. So just choosing an elementalist opens you to 24% 15% more damage.

That’s insane.

No, that’s a design decision, compensated for by way of the design team making deliberate choices elsewhere to balance that increased risk of damage by way of something else.

For example, necro has a larger effective health pool, mesmer has clones that taunt and distract enemies, ele has significant defensive and healing tools available on zero notice, etc.

It’s entirely reasonable to argue that those are not sufficient, but it’s not enough to look at a single aspect of the game, see a difference, and then declare the whole thing broken.

I’d argue, in fact, that if you put heavy armor on a necro without any other changes, you would find the overall effect to be a little … unbalancing.

I’d also suggest that crediting “the Guild Wars 2 development and design team” is a good way to do this – it’s reasonable to say that the team, working together, rather than an individual artist from it, inspired you.

(Generally. I’m making the assumption that the people reviewing this are using good judgment to read what you say and kitten it from a sensible, neutral-ish point of view. If they have a checklist of names and you have to list the correct ones, all bets are off.

If each color is just a code ID, then doesn’t take up that much room.

The most common challenge is that there are in-memory structures that expand because of this, causing unexpected memory pressure when you multiply this sort of thing by 150 players or more in a single instance – or that there is some sort of hard-coded limitation somewhere that makes it difficult to add arbitrary data to your backend storage.

Which are both annoying, and mostly “it’s hard to fix after the fact” problems, but sometimes that is life.

So, just because the raw data is small, it’s a mistake to assume that it is an equally small effort to store it for an MMO. Which can really suck.

Well, the understanding I took away from Gayle’s comment was that they disabled it temporarily until they can fix it, and once fixed they will enable it again. So your investment simply results in a delayed ascended ring.

You could try contacting support, explaining the situation, and asking if they would give you the ring in exchange for the destruction of the rock. That would give you the result, but not the experience of completion, if they are agreeable.

i think gravedigger doesn’t go on cool down if you hit enemies with less than 50% health or something. i have no idea about longbow 2 on ranger, that sound like a bug

This ^^^^ – it’s a feature, not a bug.

I love GW and have played it since GW1 first came out, I’m not sure if this is the place to ask this, as I don’t normally join in on discussions, but I think GW2 is missing some content that would help bring guilds together, and make thing’s a lot more fun and guild based.

1. You can’t have very many people from the guild in the guildhall at once, I think the maximum is 5 ppl and then it will ask you to change maps, I mean seriously, I run a small guild and yet we can’t meet up in the guildhall! That is just beyond daft.

We routinely have well more than five people together in the guild hall, with no prompt to change maps, during guild missions. I’m not sure why this happens for you, but it’s not a normal thing. Try contacting support directly to see if they can help figure out what is wrong.

3. With all the work that’s gone into building up a guildhall, I would love to have people in the guild have a reason to use it! At the moment there really isn’t much reason for people to go there. Having crafting, bank, black lion traders that can be placed would give people a reason to visit and use the hall.

This is frequently suggested, and unlikely to happen as the developers feel that it would stop people visiting cities – likely, correctly. You might want to consider other content that could be in-guild-hall for this, such as missions or activities located in the zone.

That said, I think in general it’s highly likely that pushing people to cities is the better, overall, for the game. Common spaces are pretty uniformly better than private spaces for anything except content completion.

Blocked players can still see group in LFG

A few skills are bugged and often don't work.

I mean the “Snap Ground Target to Current Target”, and “Allow Skill Retargeting” options, mostly, from here

If they are reproduced on the golem, though, that’s useful information not present in the initial post, and does suggest my guess was inapplicable.

(Also, I’ll note that despite using several of the named skills, I don’t observe these symptoms, leading me to suspect some local setting triggering them. Which may not be right, but it’s my first port of call when I don’t see something, but you do – I believe you see it, and try to theorise what might be different in our environments to explain the different behaviour.)

Disable ShadowPlay, it seems, is the typical answer to this sort of question. Try it?
