I appreciate everyones concern about the phishing scheme but the actions that occurred are consistent with Arenanets security procedures and the emails we received were from Arenanet.

1. We were NOT on our normal computers and logging in from new servers. we were logging in to GW1 NOT GW2 and both of us received the appropriate verification emails that should have prevented us from continuing. However, no warning was provided IN GAME on GW1 and so the emails were not responded to, but yet we were able to continue and play. We did this twice, and that raised an alarm at Arenanet .

All the addresses are legitimately Arenanet. They just have not implemented an ingame warning in GW1 when a verification requirement email is sent.

Verification requests were consistent with when we were logging in. We did not respond until much later so the verifications failed.

No they’re not. The e-mail address was spoofed. Sorry mate, but you’ve been tricked. I recommend wiping your harddrive with a format, and reinstalling your OS. I have a feeling you clicked on that link, and now your PC is infected.

The difference between Need and Want

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

This is something that has been bothering me for a while… the comments that seem most often common on these forums when complaining about things.

“Dailies suck because they FORCE you to do these things!”
“Ascended items suck because you NEED to do this and this to get them!”
“Why are you adding the gear grind? Now I NEED to get the best armor!”
“More Ascended? I have eight characters, now I HAVE TO spend WEEKS equipping all of them again! Thanks for the laurels!”

NO YOU DO NOT.

You do NOT need. You WANT. These things are optional, and in a majority of cases, you can get them through other methods. Ascended items forced? Nope, they’re only a small percentage better than exotics. Not enough to really be THAT noticable. Dailies? Look over the things you can get for laurels, and you’ll see that a majority of them can be gotten in other ways, the few exceptions being the minipets and cat tonic. (And before you point out the tools and boosters, really, they’re practically equivalent to similar types.).

You people need to learn the difference between “Need/Forced” and “Want/given the option”

Thread/post of the year.

So many people think they need Ascended gear. But little do they know, the extra stats they give are just a fraction higher than max Exotics. I would say that 99% of the complaint threads we see are because everyone WANTS something they cannot have.

Guild Bounties Now Punish Smaller Guilds

In response to my posts, some people misunderstand when I said this is like Hard Mode. You have a 15 minute timer to find the targets. Can you get lucky and find them quickly? Sure. Can you get unlucky and run a different direction on their path? Sure.

This brings me back to the fact that Guild Missions aren’t for everyone. If you have a small guild, you play by the same rules as the bigger guild. Find the target, be it luck or not, and kill it. If you want an easier time, you should grow your guild, or partner with another guild. If you have a guild with enough man power to search, more power to you.

Oh boy! I wake up and find another complaint thread. Allow me to post my 2 cents on your issue.

Dailies are horrible. In every game. The fastest way to make a game go from fun to a job…is adding dailies. And if you add a daily that rewards a currency type that is attainable in no other way…it’s just plain kitten poor design.

Anything that forces players to feel like the MUST log in DAILY or fall behind on their quest for whatever they want is terrible. When I get home from a long day at work, finish dinner, put the kid to bed, and feel like kicking back and watching a little TV or reading a book before bed…but suddenly remember “Oh Crap, I have to log in and get my daily for that stupid Laurel”…I get overcome with a desire to punch someone. Well, ok, not overcome :-)…but seriously, who thinks this is a reasonable way to treat the player base?

I’m sorry…that came out more rant-like than I intended…but the whole idea of dailies just makes me angry.

Give 30 laurels or 40 laurels or whatever you want for the monthly and just give gold and exp and karma for the stupid dailies already. Or 7 for weeklies that can be finished in a single play session.

Dailies. Are. Poor. Design.

/rant off

Just because you’re not able to log in daily, doesn’t mean a game company needs to mold their rewards around your personal playing preferences. You are one out of millions of players. I’m sorry that you can’t play all the time. But please consider that there are others who do log in daily, and do like earning the rewards.

Now to cover another side of this. Doing dailies is 1) optional and 2) not a chore. Heck, some people actually find it fun to play the game. If you feel like you have to do the dailies to get the rewards, then you have the choice between doing them, or not doing them. Just like how you may feel you have to beat the game. You aren’t required to slay the dragon, as it’s optional.

My apologies if any of my responses were covered earlier. I only glanced at the other posts.

A lot of you are misunderstanding something here. You don’t need a large guild to do Bounties. If you fail to kill a Bounty target, it doesn’t mean your guild isn’t big enough. It means you aren’t good enough.

Hacking and slashing will only get you so far. You also need skill to do these missions. Think if it like Hard Mode. You need actual strategy.

I love challenge. The harder it is, the better it feels when you complete it. On the flip side, it does feel awful when you tried so hard, and failed. These Guild Bounty missions require a combination of skill + communication ability. If everyone knows their role to play (condition applier, enemy buff stripper, ally buff applier, etc), and learns the strategy to defeat a bounty, then it’s not only challenging, but FUN!

Currently, these bounties are meant to be hard. They separate the players with skill, from the ones who only know how to zerg. And the Devs have mentioned some bounty targets are anti-zerg.

By the way, everyone has access to these missions, but not everyone is meant to finish them. If you want Easy Mode, there are crabs, frogs, and other ambient creatures in the world for you to kill.

highlight: mine.

My guild has been 4-manning explorables and feels locked out of this content. We certainly have the skill. Including the “skill” to coordinate communication among ourselves and with other players. After 13 years playing together, raid leading, etcetera through 7 MMOs, we certainly understand a variety of game mechanics, strategies, tactics and gimmicks.

I am sure there are other small guilds out there who have similar experience (including those posting in this thread.)

There was no reason to insert the highlighted comment into the discussion. It’s a tad disingenuous and deflects from the main issue at hand being discussed in the thread.

Your comment on anti-zerg is noted.

Glad, however, that you are finding them fun. That’s what the game should be.

I made mention to that because people like to complain things are too hard. They are hard for a reason. I see these missions more like Elite Missions. Unless you have the skill and/or numbers needed, you can’t finish it. Like in GW1, the Elite Missions required 12 players. Without that, you couldn’t move on.

Tier 1 bounties are easily doable with 10 people. We do multiple Tier 1s throughout the week with maybe 8-12 people to get guild members their weekly chest. Finding most of the targets is real easy. The only target my guild has trouble finding is Scotzz. Then when we do find him it’s almost always in the caves to the west. We also find most targets easier to kill with less people do to scaling. We always divide the groups in half before we start the bounty and SPREAD OUT our search area & go the opposite direction of the target.

I agree with most of your post, but I’d like to point out something. My guild failed a Tier 1 bounty with 20+ people. Why? We’re Maguuma, and we like to zerg. And just so happens we came across one of the anti zerg targets. He shut us down pretty easy. Lesson learned. :P

Sure. This still doesn’t mean they “lied” like you try to claim in your original post.

It’s okay to not like the gambling nature of these boxes. I don’t like them myself. However, going around demanding apologies because they “Lied” in your mind is exceeding silly. Because they didn’t.

This is getting ridiculous. I’m going to make this even more clear, one last time, and then I’m done. I really don’t care what you think, but I want ArenaNet to straighten up, so I’d rather you not convince people of false things.

People are able to spend vast amount of real-life money and in-game gold without receiving the item they intent to purchase. Let’s look at this model in the most simplistic way it can be viewed. SPEND MONEY, DON’T GET ITEM. That model is absolutely the reality of the item shop for some people. Whether it is luck is irrelevant. You could only try to argue that what they claimed istrue if you are lucky, but there is no reason their statements should be taken that way. In other words, you would be trying to twist the circumstance into making gambling ok. ArenaNet added in CHANCE to a promised model of PAY-GET. Now you keep using the word GET in your responses to defend them, even though so many people did not GET the weapon skin they attempted to purchase. One more time, are players able to PAY MONEY, GET ITEM. No, they are not. If you want to argue that, ask the people who spent over $100 and have no weapon skin. That makes the promised model a lie. I’m done. ArenaNet, I love your game. Please get this right so I can give you money and feel good about your awesome game.

I don’t understand your argument. Where’s the “lie” in all of this? Basically, you have gear with a set standard: White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold. Each color represents rarity and strength. Anet made it so that while Gold color (Exotic) weapons are rare and strong, they’re fairly easy to get. Fancy skins, while pretty or epic looking, don’t add to the stat value of any item. In order to play this game, you are not required to have a fancy skin in order to have the best weapon. In fact, you don’t even need to play with an Exotic weapon. With skill, someone can easily do better with a White common weapon than a nub with an Exotic.

Each player chooses to buy keys for a chance at a random prize. To complain that you didn’t get what you wanted shows your lack of understanding of what chance means. What it comes down to is: It’s your fault for expecting something with no guarentee.

For the record, I love the RNG nature of certain items in game. It keeps super rare items “rare”, because there’s no guaranteed way to get them. And if it’s super rare, it’s more desirable, thus more status in having it.

Right now, there’s a lot of people with Twilight. At first, it was awesome to see. But when you see it so often, on so many different players, it loses it’s “awe” factor. It’s making me change my mind about having a Precursor Scavenger Hunt.

Durian, I think asking if something is an exploit is ok, as long as you don’t open a discussion about it in the forums. By doing so, it turns into advertising.

Geotherma saved me time by quoting the rules. Thanks mate. Those general outlines help a lot. It’s sad that some people need to have their hands held, and individual situations explained one by one.

Exploits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Here’s another problem that a couple of people here don’t see. Exploits can vary, ranging in size and scope. One of the other reasons why a game company won’t explain (advertise) what exploits are is something Astraea brought up. I’ll go deeper into his point.

If you say “Item A exists with an exploit, and you can be banned for exploiting it”, but you come across Item B with a similar problem, one could argue that it’s not an exploit, since the game company didn’t specifically say so. It might not have been as large or profitable as Item A, so some might see this as ok. Then when you get banned, you argue that the game company didn’t specifically say it was an exploit, and thus waste many Support Team man-hours.

Couple that with my point, where advertising an exploit just leads to potentially more people trying it out for themselves.

If it were easy, every single game in existence wouldn’t have exploits. However, bugs happen. It’s the players responsibility to not abuse the system, should they come across it. Those who argue against this are mainly those who were caught red handed.

You still don’t get it. It’s human nature to be curious. And by NOT saying anything, no one will be tempted to bite that forbidden fruit.

I already said that bans would be justified because of the warning. It’s less of a hassle to deal with banning so many, when they only had to ban a few.

I’m sorry, but that argument just doesn’t work for me. It’s every players responsibility to act appropriately while playing the game. The rules are in place to give players guidelines to follow…this is just like in the real world.

If ANet gives explicit warnings about an exploit and someone ignorantly decides to be curious and check it out, then how is this even an argument? You can’t justify your argument by saying that people are too stupid to be able to resist.

By keeping the exploit in the dark, and not allowing people to discuss or ask about it, you are trying to enforce a law by obscurity. This just doesn’t work in reality.

I get what you’re trying to say, but it’s a poor way of dealing with a problem. Just hoping people won’t stumble across it and only having to ban those who were unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time is unfair.

You still don’t understand. As a game company, it’s much less of a hassle to deal with banning THOUSANDS of players rather than a FEW. Why the potential big difference? People those THOUSANDS of people didn’t know about the exploit to begin with.

Let’s make this crystal clear. If they were warned not to do it, and they do it, they deserve the ban. No arguments there. But by avoiding the temptation to exploit, a game company can:

1) Lessen the number of people whom they need to ban
2) Maintain higher number of players who potentially will do micro transactions
3) Lessen the man-hours needed to answer Support Tickets of people crying over their lost accounts.

opposite can occur. Thousands of players log in and see the message. Out of curiosity, they all head over to Ratville to check it out. These players then start to take a drink. Then Anet needs to lay the Ban Hammer down.

By posting a message about an exploit, you “advertise” it to everyone. Sure they can post warnings not to do something, but the fact is everyone know about it now, instead of a few. So while any bans would be justified if people got curious, it’s much better not to say anything at all. Hence the reason why game companies don’t allow talk of exploits to be out in the open. Ban a few and be done, or ban thousands, and have to deal with the fallout of thousands of player complaining.

Long story short, it’s the lesser of two evils.

Curiosity is not an excuse. If ANet explains the exploit and then specifically tells the player they will be banned if they use said exploit, then that is all that needs to be said.

Exploits are by nature faults with how the game was created. When players stumble upon them they either:

- Realize it’s an exploit and choose to take advantage or not
- Don’t realize it’s an exploit and take advantage unknowingly
- Don’t realize until later that it could potentially be an exploit and choose to stop or not

The problem is that there are probably a lot of players who fall into the second two. The experienced MMO players who seek out, or take advantage of exploits when found should be banned without question. All the other players need a better way of being informed before they stumble into a dangerous situation.

Telling people about the exploit means that it’s now in the open and considered off limits until it can be corrected.

If someone chooses to go and try it out for fun, then they deserve to be banned. Simple as that. If you’ve been warned, and you go against that warning, then you deserve to be banned no matter who you are, or your reasons behind it.

You still don’t get it. It’s human nature to be curious. And by NOT saying anything, no one will be tempted to bite that forbidden fruit.

In this case, it isn’t. While it’s true that this works in most games, most game companies also don’t perm ban small time offenders (not just the big ones) on the first violation and for exploits that are barely recognizable as such.

That’s part of the problem. Having “small time offenders” get away with it just like saying “it’s ok to use an exploit, as long as you do it only once.”

By not advertising it, you don’t have the problem of “small time” or “big time” exploiters, or having to figure out at what point to differentiate between a suspension or ban.

Judy reads, and says, “Whew, ok cool…avoid that!”

See the difference? In Scenario B, Judy is an informed player. In addition all other players are also informed meaning that anyone, including Judy taking advantage of the exploit risks being banned.

It also means that Judy isn’t required to search the forums for information, because the information is pushed right to her. No guessing, no wondering, no fear, no mistakes, just informed players, making informed choices.

There are people who have money, and have no problems spending it. That’s ok. The problem here is that people don’t realize they have a problem. People who complain about needing to collect all mini pets, or needing to get their awesome chest only weapon skins, and not having any sort of guaranteed avenue to get them, are the ones who need to take a look in the mirror. All these things are optional, but the player’s desire to get them all can lead to other problems (i.e. financial).

Most people don’t get diagnosed by a professional. I never have, but I know the signs. There are many of them, and I’m only bringing up one. It’s all about knowledge. The more you know about yourself, the better off you are. I don’t hoard, but I do have that feeling of needing to collect things, for the sake of completeness (i.e. filling all empty mini slots). It drives me crazy to see empty slots, but not to the point where I must spend all my money to buy Gems to collect them all.

The more people who see the internal cause of their complaining, the better off they’ll be.

OCD, the Black Lion, and you

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

I’d like to take this time to discuss something that might affect some here. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is something that anyone can have, from children to adults. One of the symptoms, that is evident from numerous posts, is the compulsion to have every new shiny that’s released in the Black Lion chests. A person will spend lots of money on BL keys for a chance at owning said new shiny. Even if this person fails to get what they want, rages at the game makers, and swear never to buy another key, they continue to do so with each new update. It’s an endless cycle that won’t stop, unless you first realize that you have this problem. Let’s not confuse those suffering from OCD to those with a gambling addiction. These are two separate problems, which can only compound when someone has both (but that would be a completely different thread).

People who suffer from OCD can lead normal GW2 lives. I can freely admit that I have a problem with wanting everything. From the new shinies in game, to getting every achievement unlocked and filled, I gotta have them all. The key here is to first recognize and understand the problem. If you feel compelled to try your hand in the fight against RNG, take a step back and ask yourself “Is this truly necessary to have fun in this game?”. Another good question to ask is “Should I really spend the money for this?” By actually thinking through this process, I was able to limit myself to only 15 BL keys. Did I get the Fused weapon I wanted? No. But thanks to reasoning, I’m able to prevent myself from falling into the uncontrollable buying spree that would see me opening chests until I got a drop. Reasoning also stops me from making complaints about the choices I made, as well as deflecting my failures on everything from bad RNG to market manipulators.

So if you’re in game, and you complain that you’re unable to stop buying BL keys or special chests that rely on chance, knowing full well that there’s no guarantee to get what you want, you may have OCD. And if you’re unable to control yourself, consider seeking help.

I’m surprised that no one brought up the word “manipulator” yet. As in “People who complete the level and get a good chest drop are cornering the market on super rare items on the TP.”

Wow, it is the Wizard of Tyria. You just made a strawman without an argument.

15Charrs

Who are these 15 Charrs that people keep referring to? And how do I find them? Do they have names?

In certain branches of Jewish folklore, there are stories about the Tzaddikim Nistari (hidden righteous ones), or Lamed-Vav Tzaddikim (thirty six righteous ones), allegedly 36 people of such exceptional righteousness that their presence is vital to the continued existence of the world. They are hidden, in the sense that even they may be unaware of their status, but it is because of their excellence that God preserves the world even in spite of how awful all the rest of may be.

Kinda sounds like the TV Show “Touch”. So you’re saying these “15 Charr” are the ones who bring balance to the forums?

I think that it’s the most entertaining available interpretation, and therefore the one I choose to believe. Also sometimes they transform into huge baroque robot-angels with sonic prayer-cannons and beat the crap out of radioactive space lizards. This isn’t found anywhere in Jewish tradition, but maybe it should be.

On other words, a religious based Voltron world? But remember, each robot is a vessel being controlled by a person. So one could interpret this as man-kind guiding a “higher power” in the eternal battle with an evil space devil? Then the question begs: Which person is deserving enough to be the torso of the battle angel formation?

Or are you alluding to the fact that when these 15 mentioned Charr get together, and their powers combine, they form Captain Charr – Savior of the Forums?

But if you make a “rare” item more common, via adjustments to the drop mechanics of Dragon Chests or from RNG of the Forge, then these items wouldn’t be rare anymore.

The underlying problem isn’t the TP or the people who use the TP to sell their goods. It’s the people who really want said rare item, but can’t afford it, so they complain or yell “manipulator” at every corner.

Both website are not an auction at all. Both website are the most famous community runned website where every single WoW player would know the price of anything. To not being scammed, and not be marked as a scammer. Nor selling something worth 67g 57 s for 5g with no idea of the value of something.

“Price is written on stone”.

This is a perfect sane market, a perfect AH. Our TP is missing auctions and bids, noone knows why, but that’s an other story.

So far, most of the playerbase posting on this forum is not happy of the current system, puzzled of who is maouvring the market.

Let’s pretend names from Anet, then tell me if things are still the same
Not a surprise most are panicking now we ask names, expecially some serial-scammer sharks

I see. So the “price written in stone” is mainly a community based website where players gather to say what’s acceptable?

But if someone is selling their Dusk for 700 Gold, and someone else pays that price, how is that not acceptable? They didn’t need to visit a fan-site to make that determination.

@Lucas Ashrock: I don’t know which version of the WoW AH you used, but it was never one I saw implemented in that game over many years of playing.

Prices were never “written in stone” except by people (or groups) attempting to control the various markets they were involved in. There was no blacklisting for attempting to sell stuff for 1c higher than your competitors. Although the names of serial price-gougers did get out into the server community, it was not an instant process and I’m unaware of any of them being forced to “flee” a server due to a bad reputation (as most of them used an alt to list their items).

There are potential improvements that could be made to how the TP operates in this game, but mimicking the one from WoW would be a backwards step IMO.

Tell me, while you was playing for all those years, noone ever linked you those website

http://www.wowhead.com/item=41611

http://thottbot.com/item=41611

Tell me, do you see the buyout price on both page? Tell me, do both price match? Now guess why and who wrote that price. Do you know how to sell thing fast? Undercutting a bit that price. Not surely raising it, you would be the clown of the day, and people whispering you “Hey bro wake up, the price is 62g 57 s, who you think to scam

A hint: those are the famous “price written on stone”

TP is better than WoW AH? An evolution?
Let’s start with names of who is playing our market ruining our game.

Sorry, I don’t play WoW, but are you trying to compare an in game market like the Black Lion with that of an out-of-game website auction site?

I don’t see the problem. With sharks kicked out from the system , and price decided by the community, written on stone, the entire economy will stabilize.
Everything will be perfectly clear and visible. Who sell who buy, why that price.

By showing names of people who are listing Buy or Sell Orders, that’ll make it easier for people like me to target them in bidding wars. For example, if there’s something who undercut me, I’ll remember their names, and purposely undercut their goods being sold or outbid their Buy Orders. And the best (or worst) part of it all is, it wouldn’t be considered “griefing”, as I’m able to buy or sell things for whatever price I want.

So long story short, your idea is a bad one, because it opens the chance for abuse. TP works fine the way it is.
