I give massive credit to Ohoni for this detailed testimony on something that will pretty much never happen.
But there’s one single thing I want to pull out from your wall of text that’s scary. Once they release Guild Housing, or Personal Housing, I’m extremely afraid of “maintenance fees” or “property tax”. The bigger your home, the more you need to pay to maintain it. It’ll be the most effective Gold Sink in the history of the game.
This already exists. Anet programmed some events to actually punish zerging. Take the LA rescue event that happens hourly. If you zergball that, you’ll never get to the top tier 1200 citizens rewards. Players must split up to tackle multiple events in different places.
Also, with Guild Missions, we were introduced to some Bounties that can’t be simply run over, and challenges that also require people to split up.
LOL @ kokiman
Can’t we all just get along, and enjoy seeing our GW2 Devs portrayed in a pretty nice interactive Flash page? The effects for each Dev bio are directed brilliantly. I mean, Ree does a “Get over here!” on the Shatterer, crumples him up and tosses at the screen.
See, though, I’m not advocating that the Elite Content no longer work for large groups. Under my suggestion, if you brought 150 members of TTS into Bloodtide Coast, the Wurm would be exactly the same as it was now. You’d still get the exact same challenge and difficulty. The only difference is that, on a tiny server that can only muster maybe 10-20 people, the Wurm would be the same level of difficulty, only that his HP and spawns are scaled down so those 10-20 people, if at the top of their game, can still defeat him. The big raid guilds get what they want, and the small servers also don’t get left out.
Oh, and I DO agree that the World Bosses should get a revamp. The ones like the Caledon Wurm and the Maw Shaman just end up as massive HP punching bags when scaled up. They should have more varied fight mechanics so players don’t just stand in a safe(er) spot and mash 1.
Sorry, but I need to disagree here. Scaling down Elite Content comes with various problems. What do you get when you have a boss whose HP can range between two points (i.e. 10,000 HP and 100,000 HP)? You get bugs with scaling, leading to over easy kills.
Plus, what’s the use of getting together 100+ people for a Raid, when you can do it with 15? Anet made these events with the intent of getting players to group up to overcome the challenge together. By allowing smaller groups to form, you would never have a guild like TTS. Servers would all have their segregated guilds running the Wurm. And then, as I said before, you turn what should have been Elite Content, into another Claw of Jormag.
I don’t mind if the scaling was minor, say a difference around 80%. So instead of having 150 people, you could do it with 120. As of now, the scaling might be a bit more than that.
So Elite Content must remain as it is. The barriers to success have to be artificially high, because it wasn’t meant for “everyone”.
Ehh, I don’t think that having large numbers of people is a requirement for “difficult content requiring coordination”. I would rather see Tequatl and the GJW be doable for a coordinated, skilled group of 10 – 20 as well as doable by a coordinated, skilled group of 100. Everything you’ve mentioned from the “need to understand all mechanics”, “high level of coordination” to “winning at the last second” can all be accomplished by a smaller coordinated group just as with a map-wide organised zerg.
The leaders and commanders of the big cross-server guilds are to be commended for their work and efforts, of course, but at the end of the day, wouldn’t making their job easier by allowing smaller groups to win in more servers (each one needing their own high level of coordination) be just as satisfying?
Speaking as a member of TTS, the satisfaction gained from successfully beating the events tended to be overshadowed by getting stuck in empty overflows, having to show up 1 – 2 hours beforehand, or getting disconnected and missing out on your rewards. Having these events scale so smaller groups can complete it would solve a lot of these issues.
There’s already content for the smaller groups. The Shadow Behemoth is a good place to start. Medium sized groups can try the Shatterer. Larger groups can go for the Claw of Jormag. And the really large, organized groups can go for Tequatl or the Great Wurm.
As I said, once you scale down “Elite Content”, it losses it’s appeal. Hardcore players don’t have much in terms of Elite/Raid type content in this game. Currently, there’s only Tequatl and the Wurm. That’s it. Though I am hoping the Shatterer gets a Teq-style upgrade soon too. He IS a Dragon Champion after all.
I understand your frustrations because you can’t get into runs. That’s what happens when a map can only hold 150 players, and there’s nearly 300 of us trying to get in. We do try to run multiple Overflows for those days when we have enough people to split into two groups.
Nothing beats a Ree cosplay! Makes me glad I play this game.
The problem is with how “difficult” the content is not where it is. I can honestly say I haven’t touched tequatl on yaks bend since he was revamped. I can say I haven’t touched the wurm since the first day because they decided to make content that was impossible to do with an average mindless zerg. I think we’ve proven as a community that content like the wurm is a bad direction with world bosses. Making a boss so stupidly difficult to do is just silly.
Outside of an exploit for wurm has it died since it was fixed?
No. Elite Content was introduced specifically for the Elite minded group of players. That is, Raid type events, but in the Open World. It’s fine if the community as a whole doesn’t like the Wurm or Teq events because it wasn’t made for “everyone”, so to speak. Anyone can access the content, but only the well organized groups will succeed. Again, working as intended.
Now as for Wurm kills, it goes down daily by various groups. Deso does it. TTS just did it a couple of hours ago. TxS does it. I think BG does it. As time goes on, more and more people will band together, learn the mechanics, and succeed. The Wurm gets killed so much, that the Mini Detached Wurn Head isn’t as rare as it once was.
Though, on topic, I know PoE charges a min of $5 for their version of cash shop dollars, and they also offer a large price range when it comes to skins, $2.50 all the way up to $30+. Which is nice, as it has a little something for everyone’s price range.
The Gem Store already has items priced at different levels. From 50 Gems up to 1k Gems. But in order to buy Gems with real money, the current minimum is $10. Again, this is a viable business strategy, where you’re forced to make a decision on whether or not you really want to buy a certain item. If you do make a purchase of Gems, you pay the set price, even if it’s more than you wanted. It’s a legitimate way of making revenue for NCSoft. With the way some players are, the occasional $10 here and there add up.
Everything in the cash shop is optional, so it’s no real loss to you if you decide against buying Gems. In fact, you already have the option of converting in game Gold for Gems, effectively making the cash shop free. I know of players who haven’t spent a single penny on this game, but always has Gems to buy goodies. And there’s players like me who have spent a lot of money on Gems, because we’re able to afford it.
I was mainly speaking of skins when I was talking about the price rangers of PoE, I just thought it was nice how they had a good number of low cost skins for people to buy. I didn’t say the system Gw2 had was bad(though, I think the skin system can improve overall),I was just bringing up something another games cash shop does that I like.
Yeah, I would love to be able to purchase Gems by doing surveys and such, like some F2P games have set up.
I used to play Diablo 3, and a term that keeps coming up is Auction House Tycoon. Where people literally stop playing the game(aka fighting monster) and spend all their time looking at the Auction house flipping item.
I think some what the same thing is happening GW2. Probably not to the extend Diablo 3 have. But that is literally what happened. People end up spending more time on the trading post and looking at spidy than actually playing the other part of the game. In all, the trading post have become a game by itself.
For some, playing the trading post is fun, and for others they don’t enjoy it, but the TP just seemed too good of a tool to make money to not use it. So the end results, is people start complaining about flipping.
Personally, I’m never very good of a flipper myself, but I find it silly to keep money, since in the long run, the average item seemed to rise in price, so I always keep more items instead of raw cash in my portfolio.
I’d like to point out that D3’s market was HORRIBLE. They didn’t have a John Smith there, so inflation killed the game.
A very likely possibility.
Rainbow Unicorn mounts confirmed.
Fixed for you.
Confirmed – We’re talking about MLP. I would love nothing more than to ride Rainbow Dash.
Satisfied consumers leads to success with any business.
Just an FYI. The current business model, whether you like it or not, is very successful. The amount of money GW2 made for NCSoft from microtransactions is impressive. So in order for them to rethink their strategies, and consider your idea, you’d have to get a lot of players to stop spending a lot of money. Bottom line is, while your ideas would make pretty much all players happy, it would effectively reduce microtransaction revenue.
As the saying goes – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

~~snip~~
Tequatl and the Great Wurm events are Elite Content that’s not hidden behind instances. It’s Open World, meaning anyone is free to try for themselves, or join a group to participate. The mere fact that you or your server is unable to do it sucessfully, is because it takes planning beyond just a few friends or a bunch of randoms. TTS has over 5k guildies, spread out across multiple guilds, on all server worlds, congregating on a single Team Speak server. TxS probably is similar. The Euro server, Desolation, is more of an organized mega blob of good players. All have one thing they all have in common – leadership and coordination.
Now, because these events are Elite level, not everyone can complete it. This is working as intended. The mechanics to each event aren’t as simple as, say, the Shadow Behemoth. You need to spread people across large areas, with each area having a different mechanic. The event is set up so that if you don’t understand each mechanic, and aren’t organized, you will fail 100% of the time. This increases the need for you to go out and bring more people together if you want to succeed. It forces you to participate in the social aspect of MMOs. Make friends, join guilds, and organize.
I would love for everyone to know what it’s like to succeed at the very last second. To have that sense of comradery when each person did their part, and is cheered on by everyone else. To be there when the TS explodes in “well done” and “great work everyone”. That’s what Anet designed this content for.
So forgive me when I say that I’m glad there’s content that’s made like this. I’m glad the Wurm events aren’t scaled so low that everyone can do it so easily. Why? Because that would cheapen all our hard work. The leaders put in a lot of time in planning runs, figuring out what went wrong, how to fix it, etc etc. If these events could be done with random people at random times, without planning, they turn into basic Shadow Behemoths, or Shatterers, or Maws, or Golem Mark IIs. So if you’re looking for content that requires a lot less effort to do, you have your picks from the list I just gave. But when you’re ready to try the Elite level content, you’re more than welcome to apply for membership and join us.
My God. The GW2 China site has a beautiful Anet team member bio section. While the site is in Chinese, the interviews are not. They definitely need to bring this type of interactive website content to our site.

Ree has always been my favorite, next to Colin of course.
Let’s say someone wants to buy a black lion key, but they don’t want to spend their gold or do not have enough gold to convert. That’s just 1 scenario of many that it would incline someone to pay the 2 or 5 dollars instead of 10 dollars for 1 small purchase. People in this thread are saying “THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES CHARGE 9 DOLLARS!” not true considering games like.. team fortress 2 or neverwinter have actual microtransactions where you can pay less than a dollar for items and they do just fine.
You missed my reply that explains that some companies have agreements with merchants that provide different fee schedules. It’s not impossible in general, but rather the way NCSoft is setup with the merchant managing Gem purchases.
BUT, there’s another side to this coin. By requiring a minimum of spending $10, it’s a way to effectively force people to spend more money. This is a viable business strategy.

How about I just kill Evon and replace him as leader of the BLTC, and then just slash prices on everything?
Even thought I wouldn’t mind cheaper prices, that would be bad for the economy as a whole. A great charr like Evon always considers the big picture, not the individual needs of a few.

Cowardly or not, I fully support Evon as of now. Heck, in game (or in life), you conscript me and take my stuff, I’ll be the worst traitorous psychopathic nihilist you’ve ever seen… (assuming I have the resources of course).
Anet = please, Please, PLEASE, if/when Evon becomes the next LS bad guy, give some players (like me) the option to join his side. I’ll… buy… gems…
I would love nothing more than to have the option to fight the Lionguard, simply because of their inept leader. Once we rid ourselves of her, Lion’s Arch can finally rebuild.
We need a Revolution button!
To save headaches, I now operate under the assumption that nothing is discontinued.
PS any flipper that’s attempting to make money on luxury items isn’t good at flipping. It’s a slow, dangerous, rarely-profitable way to attempt to make money (that’s why nobody does it).
That’s exactly the mistake I made when holding onto niche market items, expecting them to raise in value, not tank overnight.
If you got an item that should have been removed, feel free to submit a ticket to see if you can get another random prize.
Other than that, there’s no real need for compensation. Glory Boosters are still usable. If you have left overs, just toss them into the trash. But you may want to hold off on that for a bit more. There might be a chance that you can feed them to Zommoros for something else. Not guaranteed to happen, but you never know with Anet.
Actually, we have enough female partnerships, but not enough male ones. Where’s the Logan X Rytlock Living Story???
While I love the feel good story, I’m against providing special or unique rewards to individual players, unless all players have a chance to receive such rewards. The only exception is Gaile’s Mini Frog.
The Support Agents have no way of verifying your claims that “someone else” did the actions you claim. Similar to the “evil little brother” claim. That said, you should submit a ticket, and hope for the best.
“I’d pay 2k Gems to be able to plays as Cobalt. I would then let people kill me, and charge a nominal fee for the free kill.”
This is an example of how things can go wrong with this idea.
Some creditcard merchants charge a flat rate fee + % on the transaction. When you offer things for small amounts (like $2.50), there’s a bigger hit to your bottom line than with larger amounts.
For instance, the merchant may charge Anet 50 cents + 2.5% of the transaction (not including tax). Without considering the percentage they take off, 50 cents off of $2.50 is a much large chunk than 50 cents off of $10.
You may see this at stores at the mall. Some businesses will have a “minimum charge” in order to use your creditcard.
There are f2p games that charge 25 cents for items.
Some companies can have agreements with merchants for volume discounts. But I doubt there’d be enough small Gem transactions to justify the time and effort it takes to find a merchant willing to negotiate favorable transaction fees.
A very likely possibility.
Shut up!
Confirmed – Anet employees are not sane.
To add, you never walk away with less money in your bank than when you started, if you sold everything and picked up your earnings. The only time that could ever happen is if you spent money buying other things at the same time.

Escape from L.A.-Evon's point of view Trailer
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath
Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294
I would have placed a large bet that Smooth Penguin would have made this youtube video haha.
But I don’t have a handsome charr voice. We’d all be lucky if we could sound as heroic as Evon in real life.
In the eyes of one dev. Who is human and is very much culpable.
Human errors can be made. It happens in the past, and it can happen now. I can understand if someone was suspended for 72 hours instead of just being kicked from the map on their first offense, that’s a big mistake. But if it was a repeated offense, I have less sympathy.
I firmly believe that all punishments are deserved. GMs are doing what they can to make this game great for everyone, not just the exploiters. Because of that, I’ll support them. If Anet changes course, and allows the AFKers to do what they’re doing, I’ll be the first to complain about their inaction. But I have faith they have internal policies that prevent “GM abuse”, so we players need not worry.
And so now you are implying that you have access to his Chat logs.. or are you just referring to the chat we have all seen posted?
“oh, another one!” “Quaggan will miss you!!”….
The chat logs posted in the closed thread show, without a doubt, that the suspension was justified in the eyes of Anet. According to Qt, logs show that the person was kicked multiple times, and continued to return to the map to AFK during the event. Repeated behavior.
So which part of this is hard to accept? The fact that a player was caught AFKing? Or the fact that the AFKer repeated an action that, in the eyes of Anet, was not allowed?
Yep. So not everyone who got banned deserved it.
And that all boils down to Anet’s decision. Not yours. Not mine.
So the circle is complete. Anet acted justly in their actions to kick/suspend AFKers. If a mistake was made, it will be corrected. If Customer Support gives a second chance to offenders, so be it. Happy ending for all.
farm gold to buy them. Purposely trying to farm certain materials does not work and is largely inefficient.
But Vol, there are times when farming a mob will provide the opportunity for both the desired drop, and other valuable drops. It really depends on the item in question. For Molten Lodestones, I agree that it’s better to just buy them or Cores outright.
Why did they deserve it, and how can you know?
Because I read the chat logs from the Anet Head of Security.
You don’t even know what anet’s response was to the tickets filed.
Correct. That response is between Customer Support and the player. If they felt the suspension was unwarranted, it will be reversed. Pretty simple.
I like how this is still a debate between AFKers and Power-Hungry-Devs. No one is accounting for the people who get banned without reason. They are between these two groups, and it is that group of people that I am sticking up for. If ANet wants to ban AFKers, then fine, but make it transparent so we know what we can and can’t do, and make it an automated system so there is no human error.
The last thing I want to do is log on and think of the endless possibilities that could get me banned. I should be able to just sit down, read some clear-cut rules, and play the game. I can’t do that when we have Devs on power trips.
The people who got kicked deserved so. People who got 72 hour suspensions got what they deserved as well, because they repeated the behaviors that got them kicked in the first place. We call this an open-and-shut case.
Define massive rewards? Cause I definitely don’t define 30 bags a varying types as massive
Jetpack, Monocle, Mini Firestorm, Precursors, etc.
Oh nice one! We just moved server again, I have 3 full guild banks on that character!
So I’ve had to buy a second account, research 3 more guild banks on that one, and now I am stuck with a character who’s bags are full and I cant even send the items back or place them in my guild banks on that character!
Seriously Anet! I was leveling a new character on this new account as well! now I cant do kitten all on this account for another 27 days! Nice way to stop legitimate players playing!
Actually, you just need to transfer back after 7 days, grab all your stuff in the guild bank, then re-transfer to be on the new server. You don’t have to buy a new account.
This has everything to do with situation ethics because afking is acceptable in one instance and not acceptable in another.
This is correct. AFKing in some situations is ok, as it doesn’t impact events (i.e. AFKing in a town hub). AFKing during an event that offers massive rewards is not ok, and can result in kicks by GMs. Multiple kicks = 72 hour suspension.
Just please be sure not to have your moment of silence in LA while the event is going on.
I think I finally realize why people are so passionate about the rights of AFK players. This isn’t an issue of people getting kicked, but rather of “Entitlement”. Certain players might feel they deserve to get rewards for not doing anything, as that’s the way they play their game. However, what matters is what Anet intended for this event.
If this event wasn’t coded with shorter AFK timers, or participation checks, that doesn’t imply that it’s ok to AFK. The actions of the GMs prove this.
1) This thread belongs in the Trading forum.
2) When you sell, you pay a fee up front, which reduces your banked Gold.
3) Use your pick-up tab to collect the money you got from selling loot. You should have Net gains.
The issue at hand here is though, that this is exactly what they are doing. They’re kicking and banning people for literal kittens and giggles and no other logical reason (definitely not any breach of EULA,) and so anet needs to be reprimanded for this. Perhaps not legally, but in terms of reputation etc.
Actually, as I’ve stated, AFKing the LA event can be seen as “exploit”, since you gain rewards without doing anything. If you don’t move for a long period of time, a GM kicks you from the map. If you repeat this behavior over and over, that led to a 72 hour suspension. These actions protect the economy of the game, and help to prevent unintended game play with in-place mechanics.
Anet should be applauded for their efforts in doing what’s best for this game.
The problem lies with the fact that there were no proper communication towards their player base changing afk from being acceptable to being punishable. If you really are a lawyer, then you’ve probably heard of Unfair Contract Terms Act. And stop putting words where there aren’t any. The reason provided was a blanket statement regarding ALL AFKers which would apply to people wherever they are: whether they are in LA or in gendarran. If you have proof of the GM stating explicitly points 3, 4 and 5 in the screenies then please provide them.
Quick background. I studied law before switching to a business degree. I just pointed out my legal training because I really hate lawyers who try to convince laymen they’re right, when in fact they’re completely wrong.
/White Knight mode
Back to the issue at hand. There is no need for any more proof outside the GM’s decisions on first hand accounts. They have full rights to kick you without providing documented evidence. They have full rights to suspend you without providing documented evidence. And they sure as heck have full rights to cancel your account without any refunds for cause if they feel you’ve violated any provisions in the User Agreement.
The terms “cheating” and “exploiting” are broad, and can be defined as Anet sees it. Buying Rare weapons for 10 Karma? It was a mechanic in game that Anet didn’t intend, so when people took advantage of it, it turned into an exploit. AFKing while getting rewards based on the actions of other players, that can also be considered an exploit. Not to you maybe, but if Anet feels as such, then it is. That’s all you need to know.
There aren’t any justification for being ,anually kicked from a map from them either aside from “being afk”. Why not set the internal auto kick sytem instead? A debate doesn’t end because someone just happened to grasp at straws. Oh wait, they do, not just in their favor.
The justification is that AFK players do the following:
1) Take away the experience of the event from other players
2) Take up precious player slots on each map
3) Do not contribute to the intended rescue mechanics of the event
4) Get max rewards without contribution
5) Can scale up Miasma events, resulting in high chances to fail
Again, the debate is over. Anet GMs did what they felt was necessary to protect the other players on the map. I fully support their decision.
It looks as if he is attempting to comply with your request for debate on a specific topic.
The debate ended long ago when I looked at the chat logs, and saw that GMs haven’t been suspending people for AFKing, but rather kicking them from the map. The suspensions came from multiple kicks while AFKing.
Yes I can. And yes that is what they intended. If it wassn’t their intention then why is it possible? Its not a small oversight. If it was an oversight, well, there was 3 patches since this release they could have fixed that.
Wait, it same system like in rest of game you say? Then it surely is intended or it would be changed durring year and half of games existence.
Besides, having dev friends makes you biased and your arguments have no credibility. But you must feel really important in gw2 universe, good for you…
Thankfully there are GMs who take care of people who feel that it’s ok to AFK like how you think it’s intended. And they seem to be quite lenient on the punishments. Where else would you get to have multiple warnings before you’re hit with a 72 hour suspension? I personally would drop the “exploit” tag on them, resulting in perma-bans. But that’s just my own biased opinions.
/puts on law hat
After further review of the evidence and testimony of chat logs from both parties, I find the GM acted in good faith in protecting the game play of people wanting to do the LA event. Logs state that players are NOT suspended for AFKing, but rather after repeated offenses. Being kicked no less than three times, and returning to the zone each time to continue AFKing to gather rewards resulted in a 72 hour suspension.
Case closed. If you don’t like the punishment, please feel free to submit a Support Ticket.
Edit – I’m surprised that Danicia hasn’t closed this thread yet.
(edited by Smooth Penguin.5294)
They don’t ignore tickets. They’re just busy. Give them time to review the case. You’d be surprised how many tickets they have to go through with “I deleted my weapon, please give it back”.
I have an unrelated issue that I’m dealing with Gaile on that started last week. They took 3 days to respond, then I took 3 days to reply. Etc etc. I can’t be mad, since I understand that I’m not the only person they have to deal with. But even if your friend gets one of those “our say is final” messages, she can appeal to have her ticket moved up to a senior agent.
I’m assuming that your love for me stems from the fact that you just had to chug about 8 beers and are now very drunk.
Nah man. I respect your savvy experience in economics, even when not drunk. And your snarky attitude towards silly conspiracy theorists is refreshing. It’s a shame they deleted the “John Smith is awesome” thread.
