I have a question. Say you’re in a close match and your team has capped mid and home. For some odd reason, you are the only person at mid as 3 to 4 enemies approach. You check mini map and no allies even close. Do you stay and try to hold point knowing that you will get rekt very fast or do you run and give up the point uncontested but try to aid elsewhere?

And then this happens...

You placed within the top 250 and now you’re just trying to hang on to silver? I think that shows more of an issue with placement matches than anything else.

Could also have been very early in the season.

The leader board considers only win ratio.

Please tell me how what I said is “blatantly false.”

Exedore already explained it well enough in his post above. The leaderboard isn’t based on your win to loss ratio, it’s based on your MMR which is in turn based on which players you defeat and which players you lose to. Expected results lead to small changes in rating and upsets lead to bigger changes.

Simple observation will show you that pvp population is low.

No, that’s not good enough. Low compared to what? CS:GO and League of Legends? Certainly, but is it low compared to previous seasons? Only ArenaNet knows, and you certainly don’t work at ArenaNet. In my limited, subjective experience the population is about the same or higher than previous seasons, but I don’t go around presenting that as fact.

If that is the case, how did I place well within the top 250 after only 10 matches? How do other’s remain at or near the top with very few matches.

It may be that in theory the leaderboard is based on MMR. In practice however, it appears to be largely dependent on w/l ratio and playing as few matches as possible.

Well, I agree that the more matches people play, the better idea you have of their skill and true rank. But that’s true of anything, increase the sample size and you get a better prediction. So yes, I think having some minimum number of matches would be a good thing.

Solstace.2514

I agree that this is the best season to date. It certainly has its flaws, but it’s an improvement over the last several.

I have a lot of people on my friends list and they are of varying skills. Not surprisingly, they seem to distribute according to their skill level. The best players I know are at the top and the worst are at the bottom.

Honestly, the biggest problem is the type of game. It’s a team based game but the current design focuses on pugs. If you’ve ever played a fps online, you can carry your team in that. Despite being on a team, a lone wolf can be quite effective. MMO pvp is not designed like that. Coordinated teams will do better than good individual players. It just is what it is. The only way to eliminate that problem is to have organized teams in leagues. Maybe a separate queue/tourney for pugs and teams. Guild wars one had solo and team queues. This used to, but it was never developed well.

Posted by: Solstace.2514

Solstace.2514

So the thing about Staff Tempest is that it puts out more heals and more damage. It’s all around better than Dagger/Focus… except for not having Obsidian Flesh. I run Staff Tempest some games, but never against a Thief and never against two or more power bursts. It’s a very situational, but usable set. Some people just see success with it against some comps, so they decide to run it. When they run into issues, they don’t realize the other team’s comp is different, so something must be different. Their play is the same, so it must be their team. Thus, they learn nothing and keep playing it against bad comps.

In PVE it puts out more damage but does it in pvp? Most of staff stacks are slow Aoe tgarsctelegraphed and easily avoided. I’ve even kited the staff autoattacks without dodging in past.

Players need a guide about rotations

in PvP

Posted by: Solstace.2514

Solstace.2514

My amateur tips:
1. It’s ok to push far at start if you notify your team. Make sure your teams have builds that can survive being outnumbered at mid.
2. Know your builds role. Some builds are designed for team fights or support. Scrapper, tempests should be looking for group fights to have best impact. Necros benefit from having allies nearby for support.
3. It’s better to wait a few seconds for your allies to respawn or catch up then rushing into fight outnumbered. That’s how you snowball.
4. Don’t fight a bunker build when you’re on a bunker build unless you hold the point.
5. You dont have to hold all 3 pts to win.
6. Killing lord gives you 150 pts. And usually gives the enemy a triple cap.
7. Most of pro teams don’t use treb. There’s a reason.
8. Call targets. But also make sure you know which class to target first.

IMO, tempest is the worst class right now

Players need a guide about rotations

in PvP

Posted by: Solstace.2514

Solstace.2514

Unfortunately, there is no easy guide to rotations. It’s always incredibly situational and depends on your team’s make up, the enemy team, the map, and many other factors.

I’ve been on many teams with good players that just aren’t on the same page. It’s not that they don’t know how to rotate, it’s just that often time they’re trying two different valid strategies at same time so they both fail.

Are you better pushing far to go for a decap or are you better supporting your team at mid so they aren’t outnumbered and wipe? Depends.

My main goals are to try and fight in even or +1 fights and to hold 2 points. I try to adjust accordingly, but it doesn’t always work. I’ve found that when i play on my scrapper, I win most of the even fights I get into (2v2, 3v3, 4v4, etc) – as I should on that class.

Some classes like scrapper, function better in team fights. Some classes like necro function better with support around them. Other classes are better at 1v1 or have the mobility to decap uncontested points. There are some general rules that help, but again, a lot depends on being aware of the situation.

Sounds like your team just had an overall skill gap. No matter how you rotate, at some point, you have to be able to win a team fight.

Bring back 5 man que

in PvP

Not bring it back, create a separate team pvp mode. Should have a solo/duo queue and a team queue.
It’s no fun to go up against organized teams when you’re pugging, but it’s equally not fun to have to play with random people – many of whom seem uninterested in winning.

Team queues would solve a lot of the matchmaking issues as you would have full control over who is on your team. Spvp is a 5v5 game and this truly is the way it was supposed to be played. You’d see better strategy and likely higher quality matches.

(…)

I hate it when people tell me to stop typing in teamchat and “concentrate”. I can quite easily type and move between points. Or chat and hold a point against a less skilled player / less offensive build. Hell, sometimes I amuse myself by pointing out what my opponent did wrong (aka “should have dodged that” or “wasted rebound there mate”).

I always wonder if others saying I should concentrate on the match, are really that bad.

What annoys me, too, is when people yell at me for not helping zerg tranq, when I was busy re-capping and de-capping points. Thats something that really triggers me. Its so obviously the wrong choice to fight for 2+ minutes on tranq and ignore caps going on, everybody should see that. If you cant get it fast, and you are repeatedly wiping down there, just go to points for re-cap.

I’ve won matches that way. While people fight on tranq, I triple cap map. It’s very situational though. As long as your team can contest tranq

When you lead with over 100 points, greedy teammates go far because they think we will never win by holding two points. Enemy regroups, far gets wiped or we get outrotated.

The worst is when it’s a close match late in the game. You’re up 450 to 410 and hold 2 pts. All your team has to do is just sit the 2 pts and you win- then 2 ppl push far.

Thoughts from the Bottom

in PvP

Posted by: Solstace.2514

Solstace.2514

There’s always 2 sides to everything. I agree that toxicity and flaming in chat are both unproductive and immature. Rather than screaming at their team mates these players should be giving instructions or strategy to help turn match around.

I’ve found that players who bark the most in chat tend to be mostly mediocre at the game and are likely used to being unwittingly carried by better team mates. So when things don’t go well, their natural inclination is to blame everyone else.

That being said, it’s extremely frustrating to have inexperienced and unskilled players on a team. A bad player is far more detrimental to a teams chances than a skilled player is to improving them. Ranked tournament matches are really not an appropriate venue to learn pvp or try out new builds. I dont expect my team mates to be highly skilled or elite players. I just want a functional level of competency that gives the team a solid chance of winning.

PVE guys can think about it this way. If your doing an lfg for tier 4 fractals, you probably want experienced players. You don’t want people joining that have never done them before or are still learning the mechanics. They have tier 1 for that. Same thing for ranked and unranked in pvp.

I have mixed feelings on this. Normally I side with new players and against the elitism I see so commonly on the forums. But not in this case. I think that skilled players do have a legitimate gripe. In a ranked tournament every game is important and one inexperienced player can be devastating to the teams chances. Ranked tournaments are not the place to learn pvp.

You should at least know the layouts of the maps, the goals and strategies of each map, and the basics of your build. I don’t think you have to be incredibly skilled to play but just competent.

Unranked exists for learning and trial play. During one of my placement matches, I had one team mate say that he hadn’t played pvp for years and apologized for his possible performance. Everyone on team was like “why start with ranked?”

I hate when people hit autopilot, go yolo, and lose all focus.

Every time that’s happened to me, it’s almost the same reason. We’re winning big, we’re clearly better than the other team in any straight up fight, but players get greedy. We hold home and mid and just wiped the enemy at mid, so 2 ppl push far. They then get easily overwhelmed, suddenly enemy has a 5v3 and takes mid and then players wander in 1 at a time and get ganked. Same thing every time.

Honestly I don’t mind losing to better teams. I just hate losing when I’m outnumbered in every fight. Usually due to either afkers or poor rotations. Those matches were you can never seem to find an ally despite rotating between points. You know those matches where you wonder where the kitten some of your times are or what the kitten they are doing.

I mind less losing in a straight up fight even if I have weaker people on my team.

I highly doubt that players carry an entire team. That point of view is generally incorrect and somewhat arrogant. You need help to win a match in 5v5. You may contribute more than some of your members but chances are there are others on the team performing competently.

It only takes 1 or 2 unskilled players on a team to sink the match. It may feel as if the whole team stinks but it’s usually only one . Other times you have competent team mates but the team just doesn’t come up with a valid strategy and ends up disorganized or pushing too many points.

In the matches I’ve lost, it’s usually not because the other team was better, just that my team didn’t organize well. Got +1d in every fight, etc. but individually as players they were ok.

I see a lot of matchmaking bashing but I think a lot of those issues are hard to fix. In 5v5, you are simply part of a team. Most of this tournaments matches consist of randomly assigned team mates with little to no communication. I think a lot of the frustration centers around this.

A 1v1 queue would be interesting. Certainly some builds are more suited for 1v1 then others but new builds would likely develop

It’s very hard to carry a team though some builds are more suited for it. I do agree that people immediately blame their team mates when they lose and absolve themselves of any wrongdoing. I suspect that many of these people are good but not great and get exposed in matches that require them to do more than the basics.

Why do you keep apply some abstract hypothetical context to his argument. That’s not what is happening. You weren’t there so stop making kitten up about what people should be doing.

Ive had unlucky streaks. Ive played at bronze with my troll zerker amu vanilla power necro.

There is no way a good player stays at lower divisions for a long time. Since all but a handfull of games are stupidly easy to carry if youre somewhat decent and play a build that allows you to carry <- that includes plenty of builds that are not fotm.

U know what. Ive seen ppl complain about their teams in those games ive been in. Both with and against me. Hell i even saw guys from the forum who complained about the system in game, sucking hard… and making a post no less than an hour later about this issue youre having.

Its comical.

4 wins – 3 losses – 5 wins – 2 losses – 4 wins – 4 losses

I’m winning more than losing, I have a positive win rating. But with results like that thanks too awesome teammates needing to be carried every match, it’s taking FOREVER to move up. I had lousy placement matches, got dropped to Bronze 1, and now I’m climbing out of 9 rings of hell.

All your contrarian bullkitten isn’t apt or helpful.

I understand your frustration. I’ve been on a few unskilled teams and it’s absolutely no fun. I had two matches that were 4v5 in the placement matches and I was on the 4 both times. Not fair.
But this is not 1v1, it’s 5v5 and I think that’s the problem people have understanding. If you’re a great player, your teams will likely win more than they lose, but you’re not going to go 10-0 because of one person’s skill.
I hate losing, especially when I feel that I played well, but there’s not much you can do to change this system unless you make a 1v1 pvp game.

I’m a little skeptical when players say they’re stuck in a division because of poor teammates. The cream still rises to the top and usually if you’re not rising, it’s more to do with you. Everyone gets on bad teams from time to time or has unfavorable class match ups, but you’re just as likely to be on that team as matched against it.

Players also forget this is a team game and different builds serve different purposes. Some builds are designed for 1v1 and you should be winning most of those engagements. Others are more support and team fight oriented and just because they can’t 1v1 doesn’t mean they are underperforming.
