Just turn on friendly fire.
Come on, everyone knows it’d be awesome.
And incredibly hilarous.
Also turn on collision detection for increased hilarity.
A scaled down representation of what would happen to the GW2 servers after such a change.
At least one of your current characters needs to have consumed the commander book in order to unlock the account-wide feature.
Mr. Katzbach,
could you enlighten about what happens with a commander compendium bought before the upcoming update, but left unspent for reasons as not having settled on the choice character? Which feature will one of these “old books” unlock after 9/9?
Thank you.
Old books will also become account bound as far as I know.
this is a dumb system.
Pretty much.
They could have atleast made city zones still based on the server you signed up for.
For getting them out of AoE, you could move around a bit more and use the “Return to me” button.
Assuming you never play anything but LB pewpew.
If you are meleeing and just opt to dodge the aoe like everyone else, “returning” the pet will do nothing.
I don’t understand: I read the blog entry about the changes to the commander system, and it doesn’t say anything about paying extra for the colours.
On the other end, I keep reading posts which seem to hint that the information on the post I linked is obsolete… Could someone explain it to me?
They were going to change Tags so they were an account upgrade and refund any bought beyond 3. To balance this they were changing the price to 300g instead of 100g.
They also are going to add new colors. These colors would have been separate compendium books one would have to buy for 300g a pop to unlock the new colors.
We the player-base let Anet know how much of an absolutely “terrible” (I’d use more colorful language were it not for moderation/censorship) idea this was and they Xbox180’d and changed the system so on the 9th we will still be getting the account tags for 300g but they will now include all colors for the one time purchase price. Hence, people are going crazy and buying them up now while they are cheap so they can spam the rainbow then the update comes and save 200g.
So, just double checking to make sure I’ve understood right….
A decision on a change like this can be taken via email, and the change itself can be implemented by 2 people working a weekend.
So how does that sit with what we’ve been told about how “time-consuming” and “complex” other minor changes are, and how they can’t be worked on because they’d take an entire development team weeks or months, which could be better spent elsewhere?
You can’t have it both ways.
Either changes like this take weeks to push through all the coding, testing and bureaucracy, in which case the sudden about-turn on the price is suspect. Or, these things can actually be done within a few days in response to community feedback, and the only reason we haven’t had this done in other areas is due to either dis-interest or pure bloody-minded stubbornness.
So which is it?
This guys deserves a medal for pointing that stuff out.
Anyhow! I made another info-graphic for all interested: http://i.imgur.com/s8atjxa.jpg
It is really sad to see how anet promotes all those CDI’s which many see only as a PR stunt and damage control for the upcoming feature patch where all those feedback topics like lets say… commander changes? are being ignored.
I would like to congratulate anet for literally pushing every 10 or 13 year old (figure of speech, nothing personal kids) to buying the commander tag since now they will also get all those fancy colours for 1/3 the price!
And I’d like to remind everyone that this is not about “Hey what can we do to turn the tags off in options?” Its about what to do so only the people that actually do SOMETHING with those tags to have them.
Commander tags have been kitten vanity items for a long time now. People just have a big incentive to buy them right now.
Sounds like you’re Anet’s model customer considering their focus on lottery boxes and mindless zerg grind “content”.
So in short, to make a truly successful PvP-centric MMO?
Easy. Make a truly successful PvP-centric MMO.Once you hit “critical mass”, you can draw in crazy amount of players. How to get there however, no clue. It seems no one has gotten close yet.
You say that but…
I will never understand why people like playing that game but yes I guess there is… that… The combat in that game felt so passive it was as though I was watching a boring movie.
True and that’s why it works. It’s 100% tactics and planning based, presentation is an afterthought. CCP doesn’t care about being an Esport and the people who invest their time in the game don’t much care either.
It’s when you think “well if Valve and Riot can do it then so can I” that you run into problems in the same way MMO’s fail when they try to be “WoW 2.0”
Except PvP is a pretty vague term when it comes to building a game around this concept. I never implied that Anet should make their own MOBA, not sure if you thought I was heading in that direction or not.
Basically, my point was that eve works as a pvp centric game the same way GW1 worked as an MMO in the hayday of WoW. By being completely different.
Trying to inject what works for other popular platforms will likely only backfire.
Since everyone has a tag now, Anet just needs to let us join our own squad. Problem solved.
I fail to see how dueling would be a problem at all in the game. (SNIP).
Try every troll continuously spamming you with duel requests ?
( I have played a game where they do that , WoW) so IF they did add duels, having a toggle to permanently disable requests would be needed !
I’d like to think anet would be smart enough to make duel requests work with the Block List.
Congratulations!!! You are the 100.000th person to create a thread about ranger sword autoattack! fireworks
Like it or not, the sword is the best dps tool the ranger has. If you don’t like it’s unique animation, then either don’t use it or change class. With autoattacks disabled, you can normally evade like everyone.
And you are the 100,000th person to reply with “turn off the auto” while pretending that doing so doesn’t lower the weapon’s dps.
IIRC, the problem with Traveler Runes on a Ranger is that they speed you up but not your pet.
^ This
Is it worth the lower stat boost to have access to a third utility slot? Can you trait for Agility Training? If yes to A but not B, is it worth it to have a pet that is slow as molasses?
Depends a lot on your build and what you are doing. In WvW, I don’t find the need great enough to give up better rune sets and/or pet speed. I mean, you can always swap Hunt to something else before engaging an enemy if you have the chance. I almost always swap it to stone/wild before diving into a zerg.
An average day at teq…
Such command, very coordination…

Neither duel nor trading is needed, there are mechanisms allowing you do to both without any potential to scam or troll though. Is that what’s bothering you ?
The wardrobe system wasn’t needed either but the game is better off for it.
Probably has to do with the fact that female charr have tails with long hair and they just didn’t want to deal with the inevitable clipping.
Not sure what you expected from a company that can’t give us hair under our hats.
As much as anet hates dealing with hair/fur I half expect GW3 to be populated entirely by hairless races that are as smooth as surfboards.
Prices will equalize due to supply and demand, there is no issue.
Um, except the more or less equal drop rate of medium and light armor has done nothing to “equalize” the value of leather and cloth.
Cloth isn’t worth more because it’s rarer. It’s more valuable because it’s in very high demand. Leather isn’t worth dirt because it’s in higher supply, it’s because no one needs it.
Prices would have to fluctuate in a massive way for the 200c per scrap silk to ever be as valuable as the 8c per scrap T5 leather.
Increasing the drop rate slightly for 3/8 of the classes while dropping the rate for 5/8 of classes is not going to pull this off.

4-5k? I’ve seen eles hit 10k+ with sharknado, but maybe that was full glass non support build =p
Mostly just based on the average hits I take with ~2800 armor on my ranger though it’s often hard to tell whether I’m getting hit by a nado shower or a regular one critting me. I’d imagine that zerk Ele’s take much more.

so why, when a nodachi is introduced, does this finally bother you?
When did I say it bothers me?
I just said this is the only weapon with a scabbard skin separate from the actual weapon skin, and it’d be neat if we’d be able to enable having a scabbard show while a weapon is drawn if you like it.obviously it does, hence the thread
And why does it bother you that this bothers him?
He raises a point and one that he thinks could make the game better. Yours is just pointless complaining.
The scabbard can’t be used as a back item because then it would just look silly when you don’t have the sword equipped and instead just have an empty scabbard

Yes. Buy if you really need it. But buying something and selling it to make a little profit? Not worth it if you can get your hands on it for free and sell it for a bigger profit.
True, but if you have a massive amount of cash you can invest in silk buying tens of thousands of scraps and selling them for a small profit per unit is going to net you a lot more money a lot faster. You just need the craploads of gold to do it in the first place.
Warriorjrd hit the problem square on the head and points out why the Ranger’s water field isn’t as valuable as you’d think it is. In reality, the only time we use them anymore is when PvD’ing and just healing through arrow cart spam.
In a perfect world, you’d think the Ranger would act as a vital rally location for a melee train. The idea being the melee train goes into the enemy zerg in either a GvG or Zerg Busting function. They do the damage and pull out for re-empowers. When rallying, they could rally on the Ranger’s location which would allow a low CD, large duration water field to be bursted to top the group back up.
The problem with this is the Ranger lacks adequate survivability to sustain themselves against not only the periphery classes but also the opposing teams backline. They also lack the ability to reposition themselves safely so the melee train can rally in more strategic locations.
In other words, very rarely will your group move forward 900 yards, hit some people, and move directly back 900 yards to the Ranger. Instead they’ll likely move forward 1500 yards to hit the opposing groups back end and force their DPS classes along the periphery which gives their thieves and dps warriors more targets to choose. Meanwhile the opposing team probably did the same but the Ranger died due to being trained or he fled to the periphery which is not an ideal rally location to re-empower.
Just in my experience this is how we’ve attempted to use Rangers in the past with not so great results.
Ranger has the ability to be mobile and get to a safe location, but that’s unnecessary when you take into account two 1200 range fields from an ele.
This is the core of the issue.
Is healing spring a good team support skill in a situation with multiple blast finishers? Yes, absolutely.
Is it something we bring to the zerg that another class can’t also do while performing tasks we can not? No, not at all.
I’ve been on Blackgate for over a year and a half now and I almost never hear for water fields from Rangers. In fact, the VAST majority of both chat and TS speak concerning rangers is jokes about how they are easy prey in a zerg or other general “lol a ranger in wvw” riffs.
If water isn’t placed right the elementalists get yelled at. The fact that I didn’t place it never comes to mind. Same with if a water is dropped at just the right time.
At the end of the day Healing spring is very good but that’s about it. Ele water fields are also very good but they can drop them from range while also bringing heavy area damage and borderline OP area hard CC. Two things the ranger can’t even begin to do. Good luck trying to match the power of meteornado on a ranger when your pet can’t get anywhere near the hammer train.
People need to stop being clueless … markets adjust to supply, demand and volume. You should all know this by playing GW2. Hint: If everyone is rolling their light classes to get cloth, guess what happens when more cloth is put to market?
It gets absorbed by all the light classes who need it to create their armor. Silk exploded in value when we learned you need an absurd amount to create ascended light armor. Even increasing it a slight amount on ALL players would only dent the price, not crash it down to levels that would make it as “profitable” as the worthless dirt T5 and T6 leather.
Even if silk crashed down to 50c (a 75% drop from current price), it is still several times more valuable than T5 leather which often doesn’t even have a buyer listed on the TP and even T6 leather doesn’t reach half that anymore.

Because while fixing bugs does help, changing things about peoples characters makes them look at their character and thus keeps them playing.
Oh my bad! Here I thought it was the useless outfits they keep putting in the gem store and the lame living story they keep adding every few weeks.
Things that get your character killed repeatedly for no reason I guess is just NO BIG DEAL
Slight incline used fall damage x 10
It’s super effective!
For now, sadly, dying repeatedly isn’t a big deal because not enough people are dying to make it worth looking into. But if you read the forums and I’d wager 7/10 posts consist of vanity changes instead of bug changes, what is Anet going to go with?
Asset design team =/= programing team.
The guy/gal modeling armor sets isn’t the guy/gal fixing game bugs.

I think chill might be overcosted across the board. I mean, look at Ice Drake Venom.
Chill suffers the same issue in general as confusion does for Mesmers specifically. It’s not as strong as the effects would have you believe.
Chill is powerful, it’s just not often applied in the amount necessary to benefit from it in a tremendous way.. It’s a superior snare to cripple and increasing recharge timers is huge but neither matter much when it’s for a couple seconds and the application has a massive cooldown attached to it.
It isn’t the tails, its the fact that they are hunched over that causes problems.
If it were the tails, all they’d have to do is make them short enough that they never reached that far down.
Evey other race can sort of just have it hang freely and not worry too much about it colliding with the body like they did in GW1. With the charr, it would need to be resting on their back while standing still and that presents a huge problem given the variations of armor in the game. It would need to come to a rest quite a bit above the actual body and would look horrible.
If you though floating backpacks on charr were bad…
One could of course question if people would have been willing to stick to and wait for the game those extra years that it might have taken to implement all those things in a good way.
People were being rather impatient already a year before release.
They announced GW2 when they released Guild Wars: Eye of the North way back in 2007 which isn’t even when they started on it as the expansion existed precisely because they decided partway into Utopia that they couldn’t keep going with GW1.
By the time GWEN launched they had already figured out what the races and world conflicts were going to be in GW2. A big chunk of the conceptualization was already done.
If you make people (mostly GW1 players eager for GW1 2.0) wait 5 years and hype the crap out of the game, people are going to get impatient.
I seriously doubt they could have delayed the game for much longer.
Lol I got to the part where they say “we took everything you love in GW1 and put it in a persistent world” and just had to shut it off there…
Maybe it’s even a good thing. Now you can influence your drops by choosing your character. I need more of this, ok, let’s use this class.
And is there really any veteran who hasn’t a lvl 80 of every class?
Irrelevant. GW2 is “play as you want”. The day this turns into a game where you don’t have a main and alts you have a main and the class you farm on they have crapped that ideology down the toilet.
I thought the whole point of getting rid of magic find gear was to get rid of the need to choose play style/performance over loot generation. This brings that back in a far worse way.
Even if I had all 8 classes geared up (i don’t) I prefer to play medium classes, not light classes. Playing ranger has enough stigma and annoyance attached to it without knowing I’m also lessening my earning power.
Because I really don’t feel the need to attribute malice or greed to the company
You don’t have to, NCsoft will do it for you, and them.
I mean, seriously, you don’t want to say they are motivated by Profit (greed) and yet a single set of armor costs 1/5 the cost of the entire game? No armor in this game takes anyone 1/5 the time and money to make as the entire game did.
They cost 800gems because that’s the most they could reasonably charge for them.
I’m not saying they are cartoonishly evil corporate villians or anything, but corporations exist, first and foremost, to make money. We are just lucky that they tend to make the most when we are happy playing their game and buying things in it but they will still try to squeeze as much out of us as they can.
Ask yourself why they didn’t allow gems to be bought and sold on the TP like you can with PLEX in EvE (the system cited as the inspiration for gems). There’s no explanation that makes sense aside from it allows them to control the buy and sell price of gems.
To be fair OP, this is ANet we’re talking about.
They delivered a lot more content with less staff in Guild Wars 1.
Lets not forget GW1 only time was open world was in city hubs. Whenever you left towns it was all private instances makes producing new content a lot easier.
Doesn’t mean it can’t be that way here. It seems like the general reception of the “personal, instanced story” has been much better than LS1 where it was much more “you and one bajillion other heroes of the day stop the bad guy”.
I think it still suffers from lackluster storytelling but it feels like events move because I made them happen instead of me just going with the flow. The Pale Tree was saved because I fought the enemy. The Tower of Nightmares was going to fall regardless of my personal involvement.
I am all for this idea of profession loot.
It doesn’t matter what weight class I’m playing, I get 80% medium armor (leathers), 15% heavy armor (metals) and 5% light armor (cloth).
And in order to make ALL armors you need cloth which drops the LEAST.
This will be good. Maybe not for the TP flippers when it comes to cloth, but good for everyone else.
Drops the least? lulwut? I get plenty of cloth armor and cloth salvage items as drops.
Cloth isn’t expensive because it’s rare. It’s expensive because it can’t be farmed from nodes like metal and it is in much higher demand than leather. It’s no big mystery why t5 leather is the toilet paper of Tyria and silk is actually worth something.
profession loot is probably ok, only if the mats needed to craft your weapon/armor are
heavy – iron and stuff
med – leather and stuff
light – cloth and stuffi think it would be ok.
lol leather is so dirt cheap it’s not even funny.
T5 leather rarely even has buyers listed and T6 leather is approaching merch value.
If this affects armor then I’m glad I didn’t waste gems on the salavgeomatic since I’ll likely be doing much less salvaging in the future on my ranger.
Title should have been…
Dr. Champlove or: How I Learned to Stop WvW’ing and Love the Karma Train.
I disagree, the plant to eat emp stars MUST be locked behind PvP ie must win 5 matches etc AND
The plant that eats dragonite ore MUST be locked behind a suitable amount of WvW.
The standard has been set, if you wish a useful item you must participate in a chosen area of the game.
( Please note, I actually think these items should be available by a variety of means)
I dont think i understand… are you saying bloodstone dust only drops in pve, empyreal only in pvp and dragonite only in wvw? if so then thats completely wrong because i never do pvp at all and i have as much empyreal fragments as i have bloodsone dust.
He’s saying that Mawdrey II (or an alternate way of getting rid of bloodstone dust) should be available through PvP or WvW (since those fill up your bank with ascended mats just as much as PvE).
If that’s the case then the WvW should be all three. Bloodstone dust wins by miles but the camps and keep lords still drop a lot of stars and bananas.
So we want the game to be “balanced” like WvW? WvW is the worst balanced game mode of all three, no thanks I don’t want things to be like that.
Two zergs of equal size and equal comp determine victory by commander and grunt skill. How is that “unballanced”?
Spvp will always have a set limit of team size be it 5 or a larger size for official GvG.
You are never going to have a “they beat us because they had more guys” issue in spvp.
1. More mounts (the broom’s a mount, accept it)
2. Minipets travel no more than ~1 meter behind you, not the mile down the road we have now.
3. More ways to customize character appearance. Slot for non-weapon specific auras ect. Maybe give every race the option of body tattoos?
Also inb4 this turns into the “my ideas are more deserving than your ideas” kittenstorm we all know it will become.
And on that note, why would Anet make them craftable? It doesn’t make them any more money. Keeping the demand for precursors high and the drop rate low just means more and more people biting the bullet and finally shelling out real cash for them.
And there it is…
I don’t really think people take into account the absurd amount of money they make every time someone caves and RMT’s a pre or the full legendary.
Assuming a 10-1g gem to gold ratio and a price tag of 600g or 3000g for the weapon, it would take 30,000 gems to buy a full legendary and 6,000 gems to buy a precursor.
That’s a lot of cheddar they have to consider giving up.
The content you are getting every 6 months is equal to a full expansion in other MMOs.
Not even close to being true.
I agree, I don’t know what games he’s been playing but an expansion should have 1/3 to 1/2 of it’s original size added. Take for example the 4 chapters of LS 2 we got 3 zones of Dry Top which don’t even add up to half a full standard map like Mount Maelstrom.
However I do understand the size of Dry Top is in direct relation to it’s previous size in GW 1. It’s always been the smallest map in game. Southsun Cove is also half a map. Labyrinthine Cliffs is not even a permanent one so let’s not go there.
Nor is it likely to return given current events.
Would have been at least acceptable if we where the one’s with the Hammers spamming knockdowns and annoying the crap out of the pvp crowd…

God how I wish I could forget about those.
lol touch was the best thing ever. I still miss playing alliance battles and just wrecking everything as 1/4 of an all touch ranger team.
I’m pretty sure that, at this point, the only reason we don’t have any other pvp modes is because Anet simply doesn’t want to be bothered trying to balance for multiple modes.
None of the game balance up till now has been with any other mode in mind and things like CtF, KotH, and team deathmatch would need entirely different methods of consideration.
KotH would be especially absurd.. 5 bunkers vs 5 bunkers to see who can turtle for the win the hardest.
Never mind how stupid Capture the flag would be with thieves and Usain Bolt Warriors flying across the map at lightspeed.
hmmm how dare this leave front page
People are tired of shouting at a brick wall?
To be honest, sword is not about auto-attacking people to death. It’s more of a evasion weapon and the auto-attack should only be used when the enemy is stunned or the like.
The sad thing is everything you just posted applies directly to the Greatsword; our only other option for melee power builds which has worse DPS than the 1h sword.
“To be honest, great sword is not about auto-attacking people to death. It’s more of a evasion weapon and Maul should only be used when the enemy is stunned or the like."

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Smoldering_ArrowRangers can only shoot arrows really far, shoot a bunch of arrows really fast, or shoot an arrow really hard; all in the same stance. It not like the class has access to Nature Magic or anything…
More than likely he’s a GW1 vet who doesn’t understand how 250 years of lore made rangers forget how to use a lot of their skills (who ANet gave quite a few of to warriors):
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Burning_Arrow
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ignite_Arrows
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Incendiary_Arrows
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Kindle_ArrowsIt’s a real shame that between GW1 and GW2 lore wise, Rangers forgot how to combine fire with arrows, gave away their preparations to thieves in the form of venoms, completely forgot stances and “mirror stancing” with the pet, forgot most of their good pet skills and bow skills in general, and completely forgot all of the amazing spirits with awesome abilities in favor of the tissue paper, have to follow you to keep up with combat instead of having amazing range and effects spirits that we have now.
It’s okay though I guess, because now we can use a 2 handed sword and 2 pets at a time (with arguably less than half the effectiveness they could have in GW1 combined together, but still).
Current iterations of the classes be kitten ed, because every single class in the game retains most of the capabilities they had in GW1 if they existed in GW1, except the ranger, who in the transition sacrificed almost everything that made them unique and in return didn’t receive any sort of compensation in the form of design or capabilities.
“Different games, different designs, blah blah blah, etc.” To that argument, I say that if everything was going to be different in this game but use the preexisting lore, then the least they could’ve done as courtesy is not call this the “ranger” class when any sort of resemblance to the GW1 class is a mere shell of what Rangers were truly capable of. Should’ve just went ahead and called the class “Beastmasters.”
Would have been at least acceptable if we where the one’s with the Hammers spamming knockdowns and annoying the crap out of the pvp crowd…

I’m not sure thieves will get much sympathy on the profession balance forum. Certainly not from me, that’s for sure. I personally can’t wait to start mowing them down in WvW with the post-patch rapid fire. Their QQ tears will be like a fine wine on a mild summer’s evening.
and that’s why you’re not in the balance team. “i just want thieves to be useless to i can mow them down easily in literally the only area they aren’t useless”
the joke is balance team seems to think exactly this way judging by the patches for the past year and the future patch… idk what devs are thinking but patches speak for themself
lol, I love how the old thief standby of “learn 2 play noob” never goes both ways.
To the people who tell themselves that “GW2 has not changed in the two years it has been out, there is no new content”, may I please direct you to this lovely page? It may take quite some scrolling to fully appreciate it…
Spvp has received new game modes?
WvW has received new maps or new ways to earn PPT?
PvE has received either a mechanics overhaul or a change to the way bosses/mobs behave that breaks the overwhelming dominance of glass cannon builds and makes the idea of building for support or control worthwhile?
The TP is no longer the best way to make money in the game by an extreme margin?
We have new ways to customize our characters and/or more horizontal progression options that don’t include yet more weapon and armor skins such as housing or guild halls?
Pve and Pvp have received a much needed skills behavior split that forever ends the “fixes mode A but breaks mode B” problem we run into with every single balance update?
