I’ll be fine with this game having mounts, so long as:

1.) They DO NOT provide any form of boost.

and 2.) I have a toggle option to hide them all.

This sounds entirely reasonable.

Agreed…that sounds very reasonable. And being able to toggle them off would solve any sort of performance hogging issues.

One question, though? If you could toggle them off, would that then show other players with mounts hovering in the air in silly sorts of riding positions with nothing under them? Hmmmm, I kind of like that idea……would be silly looking absurdness…

Seeing people floating along in a riding position across the landscape has just won the whole argument.

/thread

EQ2 has 3 toggles. Show Mounts, Hide Mounts in Combat, and Hide All mounts. If you choose to hide mounts the animations are normal unmounted animations. But, it is another MMO so, impossible for GW2. Like configurable UIs, toggling tool tips, particle settings, and any number of other QoL features.

Update: The Road Goes On and On.

“In order to let each player further explore and experience YOUR story in the world of GW2 we will be removing a number of waypoints from the game. The thrill and community building aspect of simply traveling the world in huge, angry mobs is an experience we know you will come to value.

To enhance this “Comraderie of The Road” we will be introducing two new Companion NPCs, a feature often asked for. Players will have a choice of recruiting either Jar Jar Quaggan or Adoring Fan Quaggan. Jar Jar will provide endless hours of comedic relief, and AF will regale you with constant gushing adoration of every move you make. (in keeping with our philosophy on Heroes, neither will be combat capable, but there will be a movement debuff if the Road Companion is dismissed or dies)

See you on the Road!!!"

I think the page from the book was more about explaining how Scarlet was able to motivate her minions to participate in her scheme when there did not seem to be much in it for them – the excerpt just happened to come from “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Homicidal Dictators or How to Bring About Nightfall and Return Abbadon to Tyria” by Varesh Ossa

Which is a huge and idiotic implication.

Varesh was NOT a “mua haaa haa villian”

Varesh did NOT have an “alliance” of “Minions” She paid off corsairs with hard gold, just as we did to escape Kourna post Gendarra. She had the Kournan military, who followed her orders because she was Warmarshal Ossa. She had Margonites and Demons provided by her God.

She was a religious fanatic. She was the legitimate ruler of Kourna, and an Ossa. She controlled the strongest military power in Elona. Legitimately. No “muaaa haaa haa” Mary Sue machinations. No reason to pen a book like that. None.

There is no indication, whatsoever, to remotely connect what Varesh did to Scarletts plot convenience “allies”. It is as big a plot hole as the one it is trying to fix.

I despise the attempt to paint her as some validation to Scarlett. The two are nothing alike, and tainting Varesh with poison Ivy is sad and un-needed.

actually, i’m pretty sure the levels of her fanaticism can be described as “muahaha evil”.

and there is indication. that book. new information =/= plothole. varesh tricked centaurs into slavery, scarlet tricked her alliances the same way.

No indication in Nightfall, or GW1, that indicates the Centaurs were “tricked” into an alliance that apparently never existed. No indication that Varesh needed, used or had any motivation for a Centaur Alliance. Captured Slaves are not “allies”.

Varesh was not Mary Sue Ossa. Rationalization of poor lore revisions does not validate them, particularly when based upon speculation with no proof.

And, at the end of the day, it still fails at the attempt to explainaway Scarletts ludicrous “alliances”.

And on that, I’m done commenting. There is a huge difference between writing a story and building one out of box of “story Legos”.

I assume our characters came to known the newest elder dragon name the same way how he/ she came up his/ her own theory on what Scarlet goal was (the character mention in sometime around attack on Lion Arch). In another word, he or she did some digging that we were unaware of despite controlling him/ her.

So, our Characters do things on their own? Well, this at least explains missing gold and random shiny junk objects in my bank.

The harm is in the fact that Anet would have to maintain far more servers than just mega servers, which costs money. Raising expenses isn’t in any companies best interest."

Vayne, Arena net has stated that server cost was not a consideration for Mega Merge, a fact you pointed out to people claiming it was a cost saving move.

And now, you claim the cost of the old server system is a block to undoing any part of Mega Merge.

You aren’t privy to any inside cost information beyond what Anet already stated, that server cost was not an issue.

Speculation is not fact, even if you are the one speculating.

My problem with Eternal Alchemy

in Lore

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

I just “love” how ArenaNet dismissed the gods’ actions because it was too human centric and they wanted to make it less human centric (despite the fact they could have kept the gods’ actions unchanged but give the other races’ views and interpretations to it).

And then they go and make the Pale Tree the center of all things – or at least the entryway into the meaning of the Elder Dragons’ existence, by all appearances.

Yeah, we’re not human centric. We’re sylvari centric!

With a side of asuran centric.

Humanity gets looked over even in their greatest nation (Orr) where they could have had the biggest lore impact, in favor of sylvari stuff primarily (with a side of asura and charr). And now we’re going all sylvari again (with a side of human and asura).

Where’s my norn focus? Charr focus? Human focus?

So much for being multi-racial in storytelling, am I right? :/

And as a side rant: The funniest thing to me, though, is how they introduced ley lines as being so uncommon and unknown… but yet they exist wherever waypoints are. Wow, they already went and reduced the importance of their new lore just like they did their old lore.

Really… sigh.

While I don’t rubber stamp all of your conclusions this post, IMO, is spot on re replacing one centrism with another.

Re Ley lines.. for me, it is bad enough to keep flogging Alfred Watkins/John Michell in pulp fantasy as an explanation for everything, but they could have been brought in on Tyrian terms and with, at the very least, Tyrian/Asuran terminology. They didn’t need copypasted as other games/works have done, originality suffered greatly, and we are already seeing them used to explain anything unexplainable, just as they are in New Earth mysticism. The concept has been beaten to death. http://www.wowwiki.com/Ley_line http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LeyLine

in Lore

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

I think you’re misinterpeting it. Its not about the centaurs working with the Kournans.

It’s the fact that Varesh manipulated her people by making the majority think the centaurs weren’t slaves, and in that way prevented major protests.

The decieved lesser beings are in fact, her people, who think that the centaur-forged blade they’re adding a hilt to came from a freewillingly coöperating centaur smith.

How do you get that “fact” from the page linked. Nothing we know of Varesh Ossa suggests she would bother. Instead, ample evidence that she did not care and simply expected compliance.. backed by Military power. Conscription, Seizure of lands, appropriation of produce, etc etc are not indicative of a Warmarshal concerned with “protests”.

The book is junk. Better that Scarlets alliances remain a mystery than do this. Why make up stuff like this when, for another example, the Mursatt, through the White Mantle, duped and manipulated the entire Krytan nation, a story well known and supported by lore.

As the OP suggested this seems to be done with either no knowledge of GW, or worse, with disdain for it.

Well. It’s as poorly done as the original problems the writer is trying to fix.

There is no ingame evidence of a Kournan/Centaur alliance in GW.

If the writer so desperately needs repair of LS1 holes, Khibron would have been the model NPC for a treatise on duping people to do bidding. Togo would have been one regarding alliances. Instead of choosing an aspect of GW lore that supports the idea of duping, using people, or making alliances, the choice was made to fabricate an unsupportable and out of character reference to Varesh Ossa.

Because Varesh was simply a better villain.

pale tree SPOILER question

in Living World

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

It could be that the Pale Tree is a source of magic. The Leylines are like currents of magic, and the places they intersect are extraordinarily powerful. If the Human Gods are sources of Magic, I don’t see why the Pale Tree cannot be one as well. I always wondered if the Dream wasn’t connected to the Mists in some manner, and since magic comes from the Mists as well, if the Pale Tree is connected to the Mists through the Dream, then it seems plausible she is the strongest source of magic on Tyria, and thus represents its, “Center.”

We have been informed that the role of the 6 gods regarding magic is no longer viable because it was Human Centric and the Humans were “mistaken”.

I do not like the implication that it is perfectly fine for a Sylvari Centric entity to become the “Center” of magic after the Retcon of the 6 gods pointed out that race centric magic lore needed to be removed.

But odds are, its gonna happen. It is, after all, The Salad Mother.

Primordus’s champion was to wake him up early yet was interupted.

Basically this was the intended order before Glint and the GW1 players derailed everything.

Primordus woke up first though at the wrong time(most likely at the same time as the Deep Sea Dragon).

Next came the Deep Sea Dragon(didn’t do much until after Zhaitan rose Orr from the depths).

After that came Jormag(Sons of Svanir woke him up right on time).

Mordremoth starts corrupting the Pale Tree to get her to wake himself up which fails due to Ventari’s Tablet.

Zhaitan wakes up on schedule.

Kralkatorrik wakes up late due to Glint not helping it.

Mordremoth succeeds in using Scarlet to wake him up despite being later than intended(Guess Mordremoth is bigger than Kralkatorrik is if he takes longer than Kralkatorrik to awaken on his own).

Where are you getting this requirement that somehow Dragons need help waking?

I don’t buy “Ossa’s writing” as an excuse. Firstly, it’s exhausting the “NPC perspective thus unreliable” crutch used to make stories stand up.

It’s not really anything we need to buy. Either the NPC’s in game are fallible or they aren’t. We know that they’ve been fallible since the beginning of GW2.

I highly doubt some pixellated sprite named Ossa became self aware and wrote that. So yeah, Dev.

And the devs have always written every dialog that every NPC has. Yet we know that they are still fallible because some of that info is intentionally wrong. So yeah, fallible NPC’s.

Since this sort of info is written in to justify Scarlets gaping plot holes I do not think the intent is for this NPC to be fallible. The intent is to make what we know of Elona from GW fallible. Nothing new.

The current cast is light years better and shows some real progress in story telling. I hope to see some really memorable work coming from the future. This is an area where the Anet team really seems to have listened to the players and made some meaningful work.

Thank you. This is very kind of you to say, and it makes me very happy. We’ve worked hard to make the PC’s best friends interesting and not cookie-cutter buddies. They’re the PC’s supporting cast, and as such, all their stories affect and reflect the PC’s story—your story.

Why is it necessary that this gaggle of unlikeable twits be my “best friends” and why it it constantly hammered at us?

My story? Hardly, since you even force emotion onto my character. For me, the biconics are annoying, unlikable baggage, and not my “best friends” in any stretch of suspension of disbelief.

Why could there not be neutral convo that lets the PC at least assign a relationship without it being decided for them?

Why can’t it be “meet with the group” instead of “meet with your best friends forever omg” Exaggeration, but that is how I feel you want me to think. And, I fail to see how assigning affection to my PC is remotely needed to advance “My” story.

I don’t like being a puppet. It is bad enough to force the biconics and their tepid, tedious, stereotyped interplay without scripting in affection for them.

From my perspective the Mega Merge was done to proactively avoid traditional server mergers and give the illusion of a populated game to new consumers, as well as easing the new player experience with populated zones.

In that, it could be said it was very much a success. If that is indeed what the Megamerge was intended to do, Anet has really no incentive to roll it back or change it.

I think the pro and con sides were kicked around internally and measures were taken to present the merge as a game enhancement with full awareness and downplaying/silence upon the many negative aspects. I think they felt the importance of merging outweighed alienation of a substantial segment of current consumers.

Not a first. The core of SOEs NGE was exactly that, a calculated risk that new acct aquisition would outpace loss of current consumers they knew they would upset. Smaller scale, same calculated risk and acceptance of current consumer losses in favor of new acct purchase and retention.

Those of us that feel the game lost too much are simply the numbers the spreadsheets deemed acceptable loss. As such I feel nothing will change. We were written off long ago.

Ms. McCoy, there is something in your posts which I feel needs to be addressed.

The whole “Commander” topic is another discussion entirely.

Bottom line is that, at the beginning of the Pact (almost 2 years ago in-game time), you were “The Commander.” After Zhaitan was killed, the Pact continued on and you went off into the world to do stuff. At that point, other commanders were brought on, and you become “A Commander.”

This never happened.

You never told that story. You did not write those scenes. Nowhere in the entire game of Guild Wars 2 does this ever take place, and therefore it is not the story you told.

This has happened repeatedly throughout Season 1, you refer to events and information that never actually transpire in the game. There are forum posts that detail how the Flame Legion were just using Scarlet to get their way, but there is no evidence for this in the game. Other posts describe how the dredge were inspired by multiple victories and motivated to keep serving as shock troops, but there isn’t a single NPC who says anything remotely justifying this. The krait were described as bitter and resentful after the Tower fell and struck LA in pursuit of vengeance, but there isn’t a single scene where that idea is conveyed.

If it isn’t in the game, it doesn’t exist. If it never makes it from your head to the page, it is never written.

The storyteller is responsible for conveying the entire narrative, and any holes in the tapestry are theirs to mend. It does not matter if you have the answers. It does not matter if you have it all properly arranged in your mind. It does not matter that you are a smart and clever thinker. All that matters is what you actually create in your medium. Art is judged by its results, not its intentions.

We never left the Pact. Anyone can claim we left to do our own thing, but there isn’t a single scene in the story that actually demonstrates this. It’s like leaving a gap between Chapter 8 and Chapter 10 and giving a brief synopsis of what was supposed to happen. That’s not storytelling, that’s telling that there should have been a story. And it’s all well and good to claim that there were priorities and time constraints, but maybe we didn’t need one or two of the hundred of lines of Scarlet’s “Mwahahahaha, I’m evil” rants or a scene or two of Marjory and Kasmeer making kissy faces, or a random interlude of Braham being a stereotypical moron. Maybe one of those scenes could have been spent actually moving the plot for the Player Characters.

You cannot ask us to pretend that you wrote the missing chapter of your novel. If it isn’t in the game, it does not exist. If it never happened in game, it did not happen.

Thank you. You wrote what I feel. I’m too blunt and tactless.
And, for me at least, these later “explanations” come off too often as plot pothole repair, rather than an original part of the story.

Krait in the northern sea...?

The furthest north they’ve ever been in cold areas is Lornar’s Pass. The furthest north they’ve ever been in not-cold areas is Gendarran Fields and Queensdale- and that is very, very minor in numbers. They’ve never been very far north.

There were Krait defending thumper/probes in Snowden and Frostgorge. (as well as defending them in snow areas of the Mists)

Those were just being ferried up by Scarlet, however. They weren’t native to the area- it’s one thing to do work somewhere and quite another to live there for the long-term.

If they are cold blooded reptilian they should not been there at all.
Not native to the region, fine. “Never been that far north” is incorrect.
Because, they have “been that far north”, survived the cold and fought and functioned fine until killed by players. The environment did nothing to them.

but yeah, Scarlet. Oh, Look, ley lines. Whatever.

Seamless world technology is not new, SWG had it in 2003, all planets had no boundaries other than the required “edge of the world”.

Boundaries and Zones are as much a function of the level based system more than anything else. It allows design of linear, progressive leveling without putting a level 4 at odds with end level mobs. Zones and walls allow ranges of progressive leveled content.

Pre NGE SWG was fun, there were no “safe” zones. You had to keep your wits about you, as very nasty things could appear almost anywhere.

Zones and walls will remain as long as games fixate on traditional levels.

Krait were all over the Northern areas in LS1, but I suppose they were wearing plot insulation.

Major Griefing During Guild Puzzle

@vayne

Shrug. Perhaps. Hard for me to feel any sympathy over your consternation and demand that the issue be addressed “Now”. Bluntly, the MegaMerger has ruined a far greater number of Guild events and nothing has been done to address that.

Whatever mechanic being used needs fixed. Reports on “griefing” should remain as petitions and not a simple checkbox, since the definition is subjective.

Given the current player base and mindset, the player who decided to “save” the Quaggan in Frostgorge would generate far too many false “griefing” reports that would have to be investigated.. for no reason.

Also, if they integrated PvP into the living story so that I couldn’t avoid it if I wanted to do the PvE content, I’d quit straight up. It’s bad enough I have to suffer through inactivity and PvP in WvW to get map completion.

May I post this to the Jumping Feedback thread? Compared to your attitude vs people who dislike jumping there it is quite amusing and enlightening.

So, you mean like Moriarty. Suddenly a guy who is as good as Holmes who was never in any stories except the one he killed Holmes off in.

Where did I ever say I was a fan of Sherlock Holmes?

I used to play on a role-playing server in World of Warcraft. If there’d been a roleplayer that came up with a background story like Scarlet’s, he/she would have been laughed at and told to go back to google and read up on how to create a good character backstory. The people that came up with Scarlet call themselves writers, so they should know better.

At least Sherlock Holmes’ writer knew what he was doing, and why he was doing it. Anet’s writing team actually thought that they created an awesome character, and they’re still trying to convince us that they were right all along.

One wonders just how much of LS2 will consist of content trying to retro fix LS1. How many secret rooms will it take? How many more things will Scarlet take credit for?

Journal Entry. I’ve given up the idea of influencing politics. Caudecus is too cautious, too slow. However, I’m convinced that the bandit and pirate forces could be used more directly and effectively, given the right technology.

There is no lore in this game

The problem is that he didn’t just talk about interviews. He said all out-of-game content is malleable. But the problem with that, is that almost all our GW lore is based on out-of-game sources. And Anet is directly contradicting something they stated, -not in an interview, but in an officially released lore article. If lore articles released by Anet can be thrown out the window that easily, do we have any lore left? We can’t even trust the source of all lore any more? We can’t trust what the developers release directly on their own website as a trustworthy source?

Bobby should have just come out and said, yep, we messed up, lets try and correct it so it makes sense again.

In some cases that means what one member of staff says in an interview can change when it comes time to building a release. It’s part of our iterative process.

His only example pretty much is interviews.

Actually he “pretty much” said if it isn’t in game, it isn’t valid. Without qualification of any sort.

As regards interviews.. even a casual look through GW and GW2 wiki lore pages will show a staggering amount of lore whose only source is interviews. All of which are now malleable and suspect. Any of it can be blown out today by a single current writer saying “They were mistaken” in order to put some pet project in game.

The OP statement of “No Lore” is an overstatement, but there is absolutely no doubt that the amount of reliable lore connected to the game has been grossly diminished by this blanket discounting/dismissal of “out of game” lore.
