GW2 - 1 year after release

Poor Vayne. Such a huge task to continually inform people that their own perceptions and opinions are wrong, because he says so.

If a person was unaware of LS, when they logged in, after a year, what they would see is “no change” save Fractals and Southsun. One zone and a multidungeon. Fluff. A few items. No new continents, no new professions, one new heal skill, very few new permanent DE or missions. A lot of fluff they will never have. All of the temp content that came and went during that absence counts for nothing, because it does not exist in the game they logged back into.

And then, since the Original post said nothing re GW1, I guess trotting out GW1 and making the usual comparisons is ok, since a one trick pony has.. one trick.

I’ll just compare Nov 2012 GW2 with now, and tbh, there is not a lot of permanent growth to the game, nor is there any on the horizon. For anyone who leaves and comes back.. only permanent content added shows measurable growth.

I think the “average gamer” who left a year ago.. for whatever reason, will not see enough new content to stay. They left.. and are returning to a game where you have to actually dig to see what has actually changed. The little new content that is permanent is small and has to be found, its not obvious.

-snip-

Oh I agree they are very different in character and motives. My point was simply that the same people who gave us “Abaddon’s behind everything” are the same ones who gave us Scarlet. Up until EotN or perhaps Nightfall, there was nothing in the lore that implied Abaddon was behind Shiro(and I mean indirectly through the fortuneteller), the Titans, or the Cataclysm. That stuff was inserted into the lore post-script. The core of the dev team now got their start with Nightfall and EotN. If you look at it that way Scarlet makes more sense, unfortunately so.

Problem with this statement is that the most egregious disregard for existing GW1 lore comes from a writer who was not an employee at all during the time the GW1 stories were being written.

I would say, in my opinion, some facets of the “new” lore are being sourced anywhere but GW1.

Go to GW wiki. Search Ley Lines. Then go to WoW wiki. do the same. Come to your own conclusion.

After so many years of MMOs, the combination of that NPC and “oh, look, Zombies” was a bit much to bear.

8 level 80s and a 75. Since the first char I have stopped at LA prior to butchering the only NPCs they managed to create a connection to in the story.

I have not even started the personal lines on 3 of them. The story is just too canned, too trite, and too full of holes and loose ends to care about.

Do you enjoy slow grindy leveling in MMOs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Teofa Tsavo.9863

In games that have done expansions over the years, I enjoy leveling. Many, many levels were meant to be “endgame” and offer interesting and challenging content for that level, even it is not current “endgame”

In EQ2, “endgame” was level 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 92 and now 95. On alts I have yet to exhaust the ability to experience “new” content on a character 9 years after I started playing. Largely because.. all that content is still there to BE experienced from the perpective of different character paths and choices. I have several max level characters there. I also have a level 42 that is 4 years old.. because I level lock her every 5 levels to try and do every level appropriate quest and zone at every level. It is a monumental project.

I do content because content is fun. Regardless of level. Skipping content in a rush to endgame, to me, equals skipping “fun”.

Which is why I have a huge problem with GW2 and temporary content in place of expansions. This is a “do once” game that force focuses you on staying endgame
current on limited characters.

I also enjoyed the GW1 model, where 1-20 was basically a “tutorial”, and then you played the real game. 3 different expansions, new profs, so many possible prof combines and HM kept that game viable over many many years (and alts) without going stale.

I have 2 accts in EQ2 with a total of 16 characters. I have 2 accts in GW1 with a total of 21 characters. I see little reason for me to ever have a 2nd GW2 acct, and TBH, most of my 9 characters here log in and out at Ori nodes.. with little other reason to exist at this time.

Does that mean we get to hyperbeam the Pale Tree? Because there ain’t no genocide like righteous fury genocide.

No. We would have plenty to do, collecting tribute for them and having events in their honor. For Achievement points, ofc.

Daily names would change. “kill ambient creatures” would become “Scarlet wants a Hat made of 30 fluffy Bunnies” Kill 5 Veterans would become “prove your worth to Trahearne by killing 5 Veterans and claiming he did it”

It will transform the game, and yet nothing will actually change, appropriate for both of these Characters.

I love Guild Wars 2 but I must say that ArenaNet is going too far with the indecent armor. For example, look at the latest armor items in the gem store here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/sizzling-new-armors-in-the-gem-store/. They call it armor and yet it barely covers anything at all. (How does the armor in that second image even stay on?) You’ve made a good game and it will sell on its merits alone. There is no need to include digital sex to sell the game. At the rate the armor’s been shrinking, I suppose that the nipple will be exposed in one of the next few updates. Please ArenaNet, make the shift from nighties back to armor.

Do you know that the armor that has you all faint and flustering has been in since launch as t3 human light Cultural?

Removing Race Restrictions on Cultural Armors

in Suggestions

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

They missed the boat by making unique armors “cultural”/race specific instead of “cultural/factional”.

For example, if my Norn moved to Divinity Reach, curried favor with humans, did all kinds of little favors for them, built up reputation and faction.. she could realistically expect them to “make me armor that looks like that”. ANET chose not to go that route, unfortunately.

In games that offer “factional” perks, they become long term goals and give you the feeling of having earned items.

It’s one thing to say, “I bought Asuran Armor for my Charr.” Tis another to say “I assisted the Asura so much, they insisted on crafting a set of Asura-styled armor to fit a Charr, just for me.”

They did it for many armors in GW1. Lux, Kurz, all of the EoTN armors took reputation points.

So my thoughts are, Cultural armor as a simple purchase option open to any. NO.

Cultural-styled armor that has to be earned by in game actions and reputation? Sure.

Can't play any other mmo because...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Pretty hilarious that those who boldly exclaim “I will never buy a sub” possibly pay out more per month than those who do.

According to MMO developers and analysts over the years, a very very small number (compared to the number of people who spend money on the game shops) of people actually spend more than $15 a month on free to play MMOs. Basically the initial investment might be high, but over time it averages out to be ~$15 a month or less for the vast majority of the paying customers. Take my brother for instance, he spent an additional $150 on the game right from the beginning, so yes his initial investment was high, but now he is averaging ~$10 a month, and that number will keep going down till he buys gems again, in which he doesn’t see a need for a long while.

Cite those Sources. The “industry” has been going FTP or hybrid for years, and monetization is the reason. Most new mmo’s are planned to be FTP with microtransactions. The industry is not doing this out of charity, the model generates more revenue, period.

Only WoW has kept the sub only scheme. Lotro, AoC, STO, SWToR, Vanguard, Everquest, Everquest2, Tera, etc have all gone to FTP options with cash stores or a hybrid model with FTP and Sub options.

I played a lot of games pre “official” micro RMT. It was there… players themselves proved the validity of the concept by paying monthly subs.. and also massive amounts of real currency to online gold sellers, levelers, etc etc. This is the very thing John Smedley studied with his cash RMT allowed “exchange” server in Everquest 2. It was the driving force behind his decisions to take SOE games into the cash store and then hybrid/ftp model. It is why the industry is going there. It is where the money is, and to argue that is fairly ludicrous.

2007 http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1716/soes_station_exchange__the_.php

Also interesting in that SOE has indeed take the game economy into RL economy for some players in an interesting way. Player designed items, furniture, weapons, etc can be submitted to SOE for consideration as a cash store item.. most are very well done, popular, and the revenue is a win for both SOE and the player/designers.

Always an interesting topic, since SOE made all their franchises FTP with cash store.. cause it makes more income. Smedley predicted the microtransaction model many many years ago, possibly because he realized that the only way to beat the illegal RMT sellers was to become one, and partake of that huge, proven income source.

Pretty hilarious that those who boldly exclaim “I will never buy a sub” possibly pay out more per month than those who do.

Anyway, my funds, that could be used to buy gems.. pay for 2 subs in other games. Games that introduce new content that ALL of my characters can eventually access and enjoy, now, or a year from now.

I’m quite happy to log in, mine my Ori and wvw a bit, Ignore the worthless LS, and chuckle that I have no intention of giving GW2 5 cents for content worth less than that.

People are complaining about the fact that a healing skill is expensive. But since you don’t need the healing skill, the fact that it is expensive is moot. Or should we start complaining about not getting Legendary Weapons by simply logging in?

If they take the “errbody gots tons of currency” approach and adjust the price of Legendary components up 4x then, yeah. Seems that attitude reflects in the cost of Ascended already.

Current “living” story. Revamp most of a noob zone. Populate it with an improbable alliance of two factions that hate everyone and are known to be dangerous to everyone.

And then.. have the Seraph, in a large fort with siege weapons, not care. Have an Asuran outpost within sight of the tower, not care. Have a Sylvari outpost on the shore of the lake, not care. Have a Hylek settlement on the very border of the tower, not care. Have a large, HUMAN Bandit fortress..not care. Have all but the bit players in this poorly done play… not care.

Have the locals going on blissfully with their own existing content unaware or apathetic of anything new.

It seems they are smarter than we are.

And then.. to top it off, make the new Villains “not care” about anything but being pawns in yet another “mua haa haa” Team Rocket scenario. They also fail to care about anything but their narrowly scripted role in this fiasco.

This isn’t “living”. It is stilted, wooden and unbelievable.

Will People Play Content They Don't Enjoy?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Metrics are a false measurement without context.

In Theory, If DHS used pure numbers without context, they could claim that Citizens “enjoy” body searches due to the numbers that consent to them by ignoring the fact that those searches are connected to what is actually desired. Air Travel.

In actual practice, the current administration pointed at the number of hits on the Affordable Health Care website as “proof” of the popularity of the Act.. without bringing up there is kinda this “law” compelling people to do so.

Raw numbers without context are pretty meaningless.

What a daft comparison.

The difference is that playing Guild Wars 2 isn’t mandatory. It’s a video game. You don’t have to play it. Most anyone will only play a video game they enjoy it, or at least some part of it. It really takes a certain kind of person to stick around and play a video game they don’t like only to add points to their fedora score, and I’d describe what kind of person that is in detail, but I’d likely get infracted for it.

Even the people going “yeah, I do things I don’t enjoy so I can get the shiny at the end” omit that they play the game they “don’t like” to reach something that they do enjoy (the reward, sense of fulfillment, whatever), thus negating their point almost entirely.

In this context, it seems ArenaNet is evaluating their data pretty well. People are enjoying at least some part of the game when they log on, whether it’s the gameplay (like I do), or as I described it earlier, the primitive addiction euphoria.

So yeah, a word of advice to everyone playing a game they “don’t like”: If you don’t like the game, don’t stick around and muddy the issue. You don’t have to play. Go outside, do something productive, because at this point, just about any activity is more productive than playing a game you apparently hate, and then coming to the forums day after day, hours at a time, complaining about how much you hate the game.

I am so sorry that a simple observation regarding metrics, while trying to avoid criticizing any aspect of gameplay provoked such an angry and visceral response from you. I do apologize.

Heart quest almost undoable with the update

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Fire and Frost did the same, and took forever to fix. Newbie players in areas as low as 6 were being ripped apart by KD spam from scopes. Ripped apart by level 16 Molten vets in level 8 areas. Gated from at least one vista, and having to deal with scopes placed to overlap content designed for low levels, but made far more difficult by enemies with skills they had no counter for.

You have a valid complaint. But, be prepared to hear “living story!” thrown in your face a lot. You will be told to buy a heal skill with SP you don’t have, or by doing content designed for downleveled 80s. You will be told “it is supposed to be harder” by people who can’t grasp the idea that the magnitude of difficulty is far far greater for people of appropriate level for the zone, compared to the skills and traits of a downleveled 80.

When they finally fixed Fire and Frost scopes, I assumed they learned something. Apparently not.

There are other low level areas that can be done. Spitting on the face of new content is not welcome. So out of a dozen areas one is hindered by the Living Story.

Not Welcome? Ok, report me if you feel I have violated something.

I don’t think there are a dozen of this level range. I don’t think the others are in a natural progression from Queensdale nor are they Human Krytan areas for those that care for continuity. The exclusion level for the entrance quest is actually the zone max level as well, telling me that the content created there is NOT geared for people of appropriate level for the zone.

Solo Instancing?

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Thanks for expressing your concerns. It’s definitely our preference to give players as much choice about their instanced experiences as possible. Whenever possible, we make instances capable of being either soloed or completed in groups.

However, in this particular case, because we are manually intercepting everyone over level 25 and automatically loading them into the instance, we currently don’t have support for parties to be brought into the instance together under those circumstances. This is something that we are looking at addressing for the future. It was not an easy choice, but for narrative reasons we felt it would have been less impactful for players to load straight into Kessex Hills without having experienced the instance beforehand.

I do regret that we weren’t able to offer “The Nightmare Unveiled” as group content at this time, but hopefully the remainder of the open world content makes up for this.. :-)

Then, I would have to say that the “forced interception” is the problem. I went to just have a look, was immediately put in semi rage mode by it, and just ran out of bounds. This kicked me to the new Kessex map, and I actually had access to Kasmeer, Marjory, and in fact Marjory asked me if I wanted to “replay” the instance. Kasmeer congratulated me on lifting the Veil. As far as the map and they were concerned, I had done Veil. All quests and events were open.

(please note I did none of the map, no intention of doing any of this, was just playing tourist. No “exploit” to do content I have no intention of doing, nor will I return to this zone. All 9 chars have finished the normal map)

Simply allowing people to take the instance quest from the Sgt. and allowing them to form parties, like Personal Story, would seem to be a solution, rather than forcibly hijacking people and bluntly doing “you HAZ to do this ITS FUN” kidnap on entering the zone.

Id like to hear Chris’s, or any developer’s, thoughts on Phasing. Blizzard adopted this technology and technique years ago so it isnt a new concept and Id be surprised if you dont have the tech or expertise to pull it off.

Utilizing phasing could solve some of these issues.

For example, a player leveling could experience the wolrd, for example Kessex, as it was originally. Once he hits 80, via some quest line or something kessex turns into what it is today. To solve the issue of undead minions and the zhaitan talk in Orr, once your character has defeated zhaitan, these things change. Friendly NPCs no longer talk about if they can defeat zhaitan. They chant that they have! And the number of undead minions are reduced because you have defeated their master.

Thinking about phasing further, I cannot imagine why it isn’t utilized especially in a game like GW2 where open world content and dynamic content is the core.

Was not called “Phasing” but was used often in GW and prominent in all of the GW Beyond content. One example, when a Canthan character Cleansed Zen Daijun, it was cleansed forever. Afflicted gone, forever. But.. full of afflicted for those who had not cleansed it, and for foreign devils. Instanced Zones were changed often to suit individual quests and players.

When you started WIK, Kryta became full of White Mantle and Enforcers, Shining Blade units and Camps, etc, but only for players on that arc. When done, the added NPCs, bosses, camps, Allies…. gone. You could take quests to relive parts of it, Boss Bounties, but were specifically told you were doing a historical re-enactment. When finished, Salma was Queen of Kryta. Prior, she was not. That was permanent.

I would say Anet is fully aware of it, and for whatever reasons chose to scrap the approach, save the instanced versions of zones used in the personal story.

Haven’t missed your derail attempts at all. I posted in regard to configurable UI, Particle adjustments, Guild management, etc. Things players noticed were missing in Beta, and brought up then. Features, a year later, that don’t even appear to be “under consideration”. Features that I have yet to see people complain about having in games that have them.

Note that I’m not talking about features like “mounts” or “housing” because they don’t effect the whole in a positive way. When a poster here asks for Configurable UI, I’ve yet to see the “OMG go back to WoW, just cause they have one doesn’t mean we want one here” response.

And that is still what I am posting about.

I looked at the OP. Those appear to be patch notes. Not player complaints.
I would wager that some of those patch notes are in response to player complaints.

Have you actually played other games, or just read forums?

All games have complaint threads. However, I’ve not seen one asking for fewer features, myself. EQ2 forums were full of complaints, but.. none were complaining about the ability to move the UI around, and I don’t recall any asking to remove the particle control settings. I didn’t see any asking for a simpler, smaller, guild interface with less features either.

Basically it’s because it would trivialize many of the encounters in the game.

Oh yes Vayne, people HATE trivialized encounters in this game. I’m pretty sure the level 80 Queensdale champ Zerg is all about the “challenge”

Vista in Timberline falls. On narrow little planks, you can’t dodge. CD on stability does not keep up with mob density or respawn, you have to keep moving up. So, annoying little trash mobs gleefully smack you down to your death and you cannot begin to do the same to them.

Bosses, fine, they shouldn’t be knocked off. Trash? yes.

What I am saying is, it launched 8 years ago with advanced graphical options, particle adjustments, and a configurable interface. And that is a fact, and not a “guess”. I will repeat, you did not play the game, know nothing of it, and shouldn’t comment in ignorance of it.

That “Dead Dinosaur” of an “ok” franchise is releasing another major expansion, as they have done every year of its existence. The 3rd Game of the franchise is coming. Seems the “dinosaur” generates enough income for a lot of things, eh?

And yeah, after a year, this game missing often requested features that a “dinosaur” launched with 8 years ago is MY point. And I am very much comparing GW2 to EQ2 a year after, in case you missed that. 2 adventure packs and a full expansion, to be specific.

But debating with you is like debating a GW2 splash screen, and I’m done.

I would like people, in 8 years, to be bragging about GW2 in spite of it being “a dinosaur” by then as well. You don’t get there floundering around, directionless, asking people what TV show they like, and ignoring basic improvements to playability that a lot of people are begging for, and have begged for since Beta.

Conversation in one village there would indicate that the old Krait had fun by hamstringing their Centaur prisoners.

So sure, yeah, total sense that the Centaur would ignore a larger, more dangerous and more aggressive Krait threat.

not.

You can get it without using SPs at all.

That is not being helpful in the least.

Healing Tome- : Antitoxin Spray
(this item costs 5 Gold coin + 250 Pristine Toxic Spore Samples Pristine Toxic Spore Sample; it is available from from Marjory Delaqua during Tower of Nightmares after giving her 50 of the samples)

Still too much.

They have a treaty with Lions Arch as it is. They have connections with Human bandits. It is not unreasonable that they could at least suspend the “war” with a cease fire till the outside threat was gone.

But that would make far too much sense.

What is does is start to reduce the amount of particles and details on effects once you have a certain # of them on screen. This system relies on us manually setting up a value for how noisy any given effect is so if turning it on does nothing in certain areas, we could simply not have set those effects up correctly. A cursory look at the data seems like they are setup, but there might be some caveats in how the Effect LOD system works that keeps it from turning on for those instances because it is an “important” boss. I’ll dig a bit deeper when I can.

Jon

And this is the problem. You (Anet) seem to have an issue with me, client side, controlling what I see on MY monitor. Instead you want to control it from YOUR side.

Give me the options, let me set my preferences, and be done with it. I don’t want an LOD to kick in. I want to hide useless, not needed visual pollution ALL THE TIME.

I don’t use my warriors Signet of rage because of the stupid, annoying golden bubbles of whatever I get from it, full time. I don’t want to see idiotic themed footsteps or annoying weapons spam. That being said, I don’t want to deny others from seeing it if that is their choice.

Client side. Please. Options, Please. The LOD setting does nothing to address the unrelenting, unwanted constant spam of Particle effects not even relating to combat.
Just standing in LA is painful.

It’s just like when we suggest a show/hide option for story prompts. Anet responds as if we were teenagers asking for whiskey and car keys.

Congrats, all of you, for being so self absorbed with your own level 80 boredom and need for shinies that you celebrate the destruction of a new player zone and the ability for a new player to ever see it for what it was.

This didn’t have to happen here. Why they made it happen here is beyond me.

This is not a living world. It is a predetermined event. Nothing any of us do will change the already scripted outcome. In a very short time, all of you will move on to the next AP farm patch and the destruction of this place will have been for nothing.

A couple of weeks of “content” that the bulk of you will do, leave, and never return again is not worth the tradeoff of this kind of zone destruction.

Disgusted beyond words.

I don't think Scarlet is overpowered

I don’t feel like she’s the personal nemesis of any of my PC’s. If anything, she’s the nemesis of Queen Jenna since it seems that she specifically wrecked the festival to get at her. She hasn’t actually done anything specifically to any of my PC’s as far as I remember.

She didn’t do as much damage as Zhaitan did, perhaps, but she does sort of attack zones in all areas of the world. Queen Jennah is the Krytan Queen, but she was also behind the assassination of a Lion’s Arch Captain, which is not specifically a human city but a city of all races. And she does assault pretty much every zone.

I guess my question for you is this: what did Zhaitan do you to personally?

She’s an enemy of the free people’s of the world. She’s attacked two major cities and all of our territories. Oh, and she sent you a bomb. I’d say that’s pretty personal. lol

Pretty Shallow take. What did Zhaitan do.. seriously? Everytime I visit Orr, I manage, somehow, to take what Zhaitan did.. very personally.

Scarlet is a cardboard cutout of VillainSue. Poison Ivy with Brain damage. Jessie of Team Rocket.

She has not managed to “do” anything to anyone. The only thing she is lacking so far is tying us up to a ridiculous machine and wandering off to give us plenty of time to get out. “Farewell, Mr. Bond”

Link to your theory source. “I read somewhere” is not credible. Nor is the theory remotely plausible, how, in any manner, do you motivate armies of minions based on that, and how does attacking random pockets of wilderness even accomplish that?

She isn’t personal. She isn’t a Nemesis.

I did a World Event arc in “another game” I fouled the plans of the Roekillik, nasty little white mice people. For 3 solid months, as I followed the arc, I was randomly assaulted by trios of horrible little white mice assassins while minding my own business, in the middle of boss fights, while harvesting, never knowing when the little monsters would pop in. That is a nemesis, and the sheer hatred I built up for them made finishing that event oh so sweet.
