Housing.. What's your opinion?

Thereon.3495

I think housing is a great idea however there would need to be many different designs of each object, but not enough that the game starts being called ‘The Sims Wars 2’!

Having NPCs sell furniture could be a great goldsink for the game but having the ability to craft items out of things you find could be something very special indeed! Imagine getting together four very rare planks of ‘flamewood’ that fell from the ceiling of CoF after defeating the final boss and then crafting yourself a ‘flamewood throne’ using other bits of wood and orichalcum and gold….

Finally a use for crafting!

philosophy on raids?

5 man runs is perfect. No need to wait for specific builds or all that crap. A crappy mes can run with 4 other epic people and still provide.

Id argue that specific builds are more useful in smaller parties than larger ones as if there are a handful of useless players in large parties they have even less of an impact.

Why I don’t want raids in gw2:
1. Raids are for most people huge content gates. And people are already complaining about fotm and ascended items (I don’t but still consider raids as ultimate content gate).
2. There are already few Raid heavy MMO’s out there. So why to bother and do the same thing again? This isn’t what I expect from ArenaNet and their game.

philosophy on raids?

Well joining an active guild or finding friends to party with will solve your personal issues with regards to finding players worth partying with.

I do understand that at the 24th time of running a raid youre going to need a reason to run the dungeon. There is a need for some kind of system where youre rewarded for your time. An old MMO I used to play had one single ‘raid style’ dungeon that was so hard only two guilds had ever completed it. Their reward was that each member had a one in twenty chance of having a unique armour skin drop. This armour had stats that no armour had in the game, but were far below BiS.

Now read my lips (text!) I am not saying we need to rely entirely on RNG to reward people like this old MMO did, but giving a chance to get something really cool, added to the prestige of doing something amazingly hard and having your name written down in the history of the server as well as raid dungeon tokens and drops you get would keep people playing. Not grinding no, but playing. Plus it would add some much needed ‘epicness’ to the game in my opinion.

There are few downsides providing theyre implemented correctly by ANET!

Ways not to get griefed:
1) Dont trade outside of the TP. Its a good enough system and the gold sink is actually good for the game.
2) Roam the JP with a group of server buddies. The WvW JPs are in a PvP zone so you cannot expect to roam through there without coming up against someone/people with the potential to kill you or stifle your progress. If the JPs became PvE areas they would have to reduce the number of badges gained due to the ease of getting them! In that case youve not added anything to the game.
3) Why afk in the outside world when you click twice to go Into the Mists where youre perfectly safe? Its really not hard.

All three are non-issues in my opinion.

So what youre saying is that because you do not like dungeons they should release no new dungeon content? I dont like sPvP but I dont come onto the forums demanding that they spend less time developing that side of the game! As I said, brick wall.

There is nothing in any post here that suggests that because they could develop GW2 raids that they couldnt improve open world events as well. Hell, id love to see more world bosses with awesome sprawling DE’s leading up to the main battle! I also think that there needs to be some way to take a large group into an instanced zone and have them be on their own to accomplish a task. You could argue that the latter is slightly more epic!

Nowhere have I personally said anything should be forced. There’s nothing forcing you to do dungeons (ignoring fractals which theyre fixing) so why does it mean youre forced to do these large group ‘raids’ (and im using the term ‘raid’ carefully here as a GW2 raid could be anything!).

Another thing- dividing loot? What, where, how, why?! You dont divide loot in dungeons so why would you need to ina raid…..oh wait, youre thinking of WoW raids. This isnt WoW, this is GW2 and GW2 raids can have any format the devs can think of including just using the current system employed by dungeons.

Repetitiveness? I refer you back to dungeons and the fractals. Its ok to have repeating events so long as the players are rewarded. This reward doesnt have to be in gold and can be bragging rights only! A sense of achievement in doing something on a grand scale (plus the odd drop here and there) would be enough to get people playing.

Im too lazy to run dungeons so they should make all dungeon tokens purchasable for gold. But im too lazy to get that so I think they should just give me them for free.

Sorry for the sarcasm but its really not hard to roll another character. Id hate a race change to be brought in as it would completely ruin immersion for me to just be able to change race at will.

Guild wars 2 is as advertised when we bought it. They should fine tune and improve the game and not re-engineer it because people want hugely complex additions to the game that run against the stated philosophy.

Its like arguing with a brick wall sometimes! How is introducing ‘gw2 style raids’ against the core philosophy? Hell even if it went against the philosophy but was good for the vast majority of players in the game id want to see it brought in! You dont even know what ‘GW2 style raids’ would involve yet youre saying they go against the philosophy!

Thereon.3495

The only way I can see you being scammed (since you didn’t provide the information), is by mail. You sent something to someone and were supposed to get something in return, but you didn’t get it. This is simply an issue of trust.

In GW1, they did something about it because there was no trading post. There was only player to player trading. The only way you could obtain goods was by trading. In GW2, we have the trading post.

Now I hate to sound like a downer or conspiracy theorist, but this is the catch and probably why they won’t do anything about it. (prepare your tinfoil hats)

They want you to use the trading post. Because they get to charge you for selling and buying items. The listing fee is their way of getting something out of your trades. So they won’t implement player to player trading or support mail trading, much less take action against being scammed as such. They want to encourage you to use the trading post for safer transactions, which in the process, makes you give them money.

Sorry for the conspiracy theory, but that’s the only reason I can think of. :P

Roughly translated: The TP is a goldsink and is good for the game.

Mail scams are an issue between the two people involved, ANET have to responsibility in my opinion.

Yeah but my post was more on the lines of, why we can’t have player to player trading and why we don’t have C.O.D. as an option in the mail. Also why they won’t support it or take action.

In other games, they have a trading post with a fee, plus they also have player to player trading and the option for C.O.D. in your mail. Many ways to trade between players that are perfectly viable. Yet Anet won’t give us those options even though they would prevent these kind of things from happening. They want us to use the trading post only and won’t support any other kind of trading.

Player to player trading is exactly the same as using the TP except it isnt a goldsink as the game doesnt swallow up any gold. This would lead to issues with inflation leading to a less stable game. The TP was brought in to combat inflation and provide an easy place to sell and buy items.

philosophy on raids?

Thereon.3495

Im sorry but hearing people say “I dont want raids because they wouldnt be available to everyone” and “I dont like the idea of waiting around for randoms” is starting to annoy me.

Firstly they would be just as accessible as the Fractals are now. Multiple difficulties with very little difference in the loot you get between those levels. With raids you could even just make all the drops roughly the same and have a server-wide shoutout to the group that completes the hardest difficulty, maybe the names of those people posted somewhere in game for everyone to see. People would do it just for the prestige!

Secondly you queue for WvW….you queue while regular dungeon parties are formulated… you queue while waiting for DEs etc etc. There is no difference because while you are queuing you can be doing something else. It doesnt literally mean waiting in a lobby afk for 10/20/30mins.

I think raids, providing theyre done the ‘GW2 way’, could be amazing for both PuGs and guilds/groups whether theyre organised or not. Having content that brings with it ‘bragging rights’ for guilds/groups is exactly what the game needs because it doesnt have to bring gear progression. Players will attempt these raids to get their name recorded in the history of the server (at high difficulty levels). Providing you put lower difficulty levels in its not gating content for anyone any more than the fractals are!

philosophy on raids?

Thereon.3495

Thank you OP for summing up exactly how I also feel about the game and raids in particular. Also many thanks to Vae Victus and CobaltSixty for posting answers that have nothing to do with the question at hand, as so many do when the word ‘raid’ pops up.

Lets break it down- a raid can be anything GW2 wants it to be so long as it follows a few rules. These usually include a set number of players (lets say 10+), must be a dungeon format and must include a large scale boss battle somewhere in the dungeon, usually at the end. THAT IS IT. Nowhere does it say that new tiers of gear have to be introduced, nowhere does it say you MUST grind and grind to get the super awesome powerful equipment at the end and in no way does it mean it has to be mandatory to run.

This game can take the format of a raid and strip it of all the nasty things people complain about. This game can redefine the raid and I think its something GW2 needs because apart from the world bosses this game does lack that ‘grand scale epicness’ seen in other MMOs. Guild Wars 2 raids can be unique to this game and feature ANYTHING the devs care to design. So why is it that the same group come in here and say “Nope, dont want raids because they stupid!”. Its like saying you dont like the taste of something before you even see, hear or taste what it is.

I would take this one step further and say the same thing about the dialog cut scenes. There were a few times in the story where it showed the characters in game and a discussion was going on and I felt that was much better and more immersive then when it goes to the two character discussion cut scene.

This! So many times during the story Trahearne is giving a speech and then all of a sudden the dialogue scene kicks in and im thinking….WHY?! The scenes have some awesome artwork but once youve seen a couple they start getting annoying. Id much rather a standard cut scene with the camera doing its rounds, focusing on certain characters as they speak. The dialogue scenes for me are a big immersion breaker.

Yeah you can use a rifle and get good results but that has to be the most boring uninteresting play style you can choose for a warrior.

After having switched to a rifle build on launch of the fractals, I can indeed confirm that using the rifle is akin to hammering a nail into a wall with just your forehead. Ive tried longbow but the rifle suited my dungeon build better. Great damage but oh so boring to use!

Guesting will solve the "underflow" issue?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thereon.3495

Thereon.3495

If I remember something about guesting right, in order to Guest on another server, you would have to be mutual friends with someone on that server— as in you and your friend have to be their friends lists. Simply put, you can’t just guest on any random server. If you want to Guest on a high pop server, make friends with people on them.

Even if thats the case all itll take is for one person on a high pop server to link his name on the forums for everyone to friend him, and theyll be able to join on that server.

I personally have no feelings about this. Overflow is still the game so its not a huge deal for me providing the sheer amount of new members dont lag the server.

Typical Day of GW2

Thereon.3495

You say that this is your opinion, but then say changes are needed. Well theyre not needed if its just you with this opinion!

Youve made a few oversights as well, namely for WvW. The people in WvW arent bored otherwise they wouldnt be there. If in 1st place its all about dominating, making sure you get as many points as possible so that you stay in 1st place. Plus kicking the kitten of both other servers is kinda fun! If youre in 2nd place you want to get 1st but not fall to 3rd. In my opinion this is the most enjoyable part as youre forced to defend and attack against two other servers. 3rd place you either battle to see if you can get 2nd or just lose the round. You then drop into the tier below and have the potential to dominate!

Camping jumping puzzles may be easy kills but it hinders your server overall because you have a large collection of players in a place where they cannot capture anything. Youre actually damaging your server’s rank by being in there for sustained periods of time which is fine so long as you and other members of your server know that.

Bored with PvE. Well thats an opinion as I can still find many many things to do and have fun with. I dont do sPvP so I cant comment on that however changing servers will soon cost gems to thats point 5 cancelled out.

Edit: I know the game isnt perfect and I myself am playing less than I used to. But I just have a little break from the game when im getting slightly bored.

There is no actual reason why they dont have last names, just that ‘its not known how other Sylvari would react to an individual having more than one name’. Many have now created characters with two names so the way I see it its become more of a norm to adopt a second name so no worries! After getting my hands on a name change contract i’ll be adding a second name.

What inspired your character names?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thereon.3495

Thereon.3495

I started playing at headstart and therefore wanted to get in quick with my usual game name which is Thereon. I started a human female and created an alt called Thereonx to store equips on as per every other game. Got bored with Queensdale and thought id go check out the Sylvari areas….havent looked back since.

Sylvari typically have just the one name but there is no rule saying they cannot have a second name, just that ‘it isnt known how other Sylvari would react to an individual with two names’. I like to stick to naming conventions but many have created Sylvari characters with two names so id say this ‘taboo’ of two names is now gone.

So the story- my Sylvari awoke with the memories of a fallen human female soldier called Thereon. She admired the courage and passion of this individual and so took on her name shortly after wandering into the world. She soon felt a pressing need to blend in with the general population of Tyria in order to best get to know them, and so made the decision to adopt the second name Avenrise meaning ‘A white plant rising’.

There’s a whole backstory behind the human female thing but ive never bothered to write it down, its just in my head. I wont bore you with it! Needless to say im waiting for the name change contract to be released!

I think Raids could actually work for GW2.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thereon.3495

I think GW2 could use some of the ‘epicness’ that raids could bring. Raids are just dungeons allowing 10+ people so I dont understand why people are so against them! I can imagine 15 people going into this deep cave complex, having to fight mobs and complete puzzles and challenges such as standing on certain pressure pads before facing a multi-skilled giant cave troll who collapses parts of his cave as the fight progresses.

Yeh, my imagination isnt what it should be! Point im making is you could create all sorts of different puzzles based on the fact you have a large number of players and the fights themselves could be interesting and rewarding, without giving advantage to anyone.

Oh and FYI there doesnt need to be any new tiers introduced to GW2 as we have the infusion system now.

What type of builds for a group?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thereon.3495

Thereon.3495

First off every member should start with looking at their defense, that is what is going to keep each of you alive if youre 1 on 1 with a mob. All the time youre on your feet youre doing damage so your DPS is going to be higher. Secondly think what skills you have that can benefit others in the group. The main way to do this is look at heals/boons you can give and more importantly what combo fields you can put down.

Look at what weapons your party are using and figure out what finishers they will use as a result. For example a banner build warrior with a rifle will use a lot of projectile and blast finishers. Placing a banner down inside a water field will enable an AOE heal which is great for the party.

Lastly think about direct DPS itself. Yes, LASTLY. If all members can stay on their feet by helping each other out then youll get boons from each other to boost damage anyway and do a lot of damage compared to when half are on the floor.

Warriors, thoughts?

in Community Creations

Posted by: Thereon.3495

Thereon.3495

Warriors are a balanced class overall and saying they need to be nerfed due to a single highly skilled player solo’ing hard dungeon content is wrong. As with all classes they could use a tweak as there are far to many warriors using a GS and for good reason. I myself run a rifle/axe+shield build and can assure you my damage is on par with many other party members due to the fact that I run a shouts heal build and use Knights armour.

If we’re talking about dungeons here then warriors are no more OP than any other class. General PvE we are strong but ive never heard someone say ‘im going to farm Orr with my warrior now’. Either way, classes arent balanced based on the exploits of the highest skilled player and im glad thats the case otherwise they would nerf warriors into the ground after watching that video! Chances are, however, theyll look into why he was able to solo Arah and make changes there.

Now if we could only direct heal other players, this would be a start on making the combat less braindead stupid because the encounters have to be designed around shallow mechanics rather than trinity.

My warrior is a shouts heal build, I use the shouts regardless of whether the party are fighting. I can direct heal. The same goes for anyone granting regeneration. Just because youre not traited/skilled for healing doesnt mean there isnt a way to heal your party. By the sounds of it youd rather trait for higher damage/defense than for healing, yet still expect a party heal skill.

Required minimum lvl for FoTM

This is kinda a non-issue. Ive not EVER seen a character lower than 80 join in a fractal, let alone at the levels where agony resistance is needed.

The only thing I can see happening is people asking to see AR equipment before being accepted into parties. If you havent got the required AR then in my opinion youre not entitled to join those groups. The general rule is fractal level minus 5 for AR. If you want to go higher than your given AR should allow you to go then find a group that will allow that or make one yourself. This patch is here to make it so that people with similar AR resistance and experience can party together regardless of fractal level, not so that level 16s can go partying at F30. I personally have 25 AR….I know i’ll ‘gimp’ the team if I go in at F40 so i’ll wait until I have more AR.

Birthday presents?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

To clarify, people got presents on the character’s birthday, not their own, so we won’t know until over half a year from now, at the earliest.
Though, it would be nice!

Well youve made me an unhappy man! At the age of 27 all I want is a GW2 mini for my Birthday but alas it seems as though i’ll be crying myself to sleep that night.

In all seriousness ive not played GW1 so no idea about the bday thing….although it would probably mean a third/half the active population receiving a mini within a 3 day period as id be willing to bet that amount have been playing since headstart/launch!

AoE is too strong!

I have and for the most part PvE is balanced in my opinion. Notice ‘most part’- as with all games there are some inconsistencies here and there but theyre usually fixed within a suitable timeframe. I personally feel that rangers and engies need a tweeking but that thieves do not. Ive survived a backstab thief on many occasions simply by traiting right and having good reflexes. They mess up the combo or you interrupt them and they go down quick as anything.

The point I was originally making wasnt about my views on the supposed AOE nerf, its about trusting the team to get it right and not making wild accusations on the forums.

If you want to see a shift in cumulative damage from AoE to single-target, you don’t perpetuate the problem by making one less effective. You find an actual solution.

Like what youre doing….oh no, wait, youve offered no constructive criticism whatsoever. How about coming on the forums and giving ideas as to how you would balance those using AOE in wvw instead of moaning about it and calling for people’s heads. I expect this thread to be closed pretty soon.

One thing I will say though- do you really think they’ll go in blindly and nerf every AOE skill in the game without testing? Do me a favour and get some common sense, they’ll test until theyre 100% sure before putting it in a patch.

why do people hate magic find?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thereon.3495

I hate magic find like many of you because its a selfish stat that takes away from the group power, not to mention means that the user has more chance to fall on his kitty than if he were wearing ‘proper’ armour.

But what about if MF was tweaked so that the entire party would feel its affects? It would certainly become more useful to the group. Providing you were able to see that the user was using MF then you would have a choice as a group whether or not the extra MF would matter. For instance in the Dredge fractal id jump at the chance to gain someone elses MF (although would never use myself).

Also what about allowing Sigil of Luck stacks to be independent of any other stacks, and save when going into a dungeon. This way the player could build up their MF outside of the dungeon before swapping to a better weapon inside to help the group. This would certainly encourage events to be done outside the dungeon.

Just a couple of ideas. Many people moan about ikssues on these forums but few give ideas as to how to fix a problem

Its a US developed game so PST is standard. They usually give CET as well which is GMT+1 but sometimes the US posters forget to include.

Either way just google for a converter from PST to GMT, its not that hard. Im from UK and have no issue.

When does"profitable"turn into"exploiting"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thereon.3495

Use common sense, its as simple as that. If you can make more money from the thing you are doing than you can make from, say, doing a dungeon then its probably an imbalanced way of making gold. Also think whether its new gold coming into the game as opposed to changing hands.

If in doubt use the 3g/hour rule. If you can make more than this then only do the transaction a handful of times before contacting admin through the ticket system to make sure its legit.

How do you feel about leveling alts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thereon.3495

Thereon.3495

Well the question asked is a kind of two-pronged one and most have talked about how they feel when leveling. I want to talk about the other- I think that the ease of leveling alts in the game has taken away a lot of the immersion and turned this game into something thats rather shallow. Whenever people say ‘just jumping on my alt’ im reminded that its just a game im playing and nothing more. While many may like this I think it takes a huge amount away from atmosphere. The most depressing thing? Just to carry on playing with my (former) guildies I had to create an alt myself as they all started leveling alts themselves.

As youve guessed, ive a huge problem with the ease of leveling in GW2 and it will probably be the main reason behind whether or not I choose to buy an expansion.

Getting crushed one round will then mean you get placed against opposition in the next tier down for the next round. My (former) server almost always dominated the next round and so I did the map exploration at that time before we got promoted again.

Looking for a high population server

in Players Helping Players

Its up to you whether to transfer while its free but remember that at the moment most of the server population are in FotM dungeon ‘grinding’ for their ascended gear and decent drops. ANET are addressing this soon by adding more ways to get ascended gear in the open world along with a ‘crown token’ system. Personally id swap servers if the general population is low (says low on the server list) but not if its on medium/high because many of those players will come out of hiding after the patch.
