So everyone who has found a way to do it is just wrong. Gotcha.

Judging by the amount of these materials on the trading post many people have found ways to gather them. Maybe you should focus on figuring out how that’s being accomplished.

That’s very clever, taking what I said and then trying to make it something else, then tossing in something anecdotal like that. It’s neat. Obviously there’s a disconnect in what the term “reliably farm” means…your definition seems to preclude the notion of “having to do it in more than one tiny area.”

Or is this about to devolve into an argument over semantics when it comes to “knee-jerk” vs “emergency” vs “necessary?” They can all be applied to the changes brought forth recently, the only difference is viewpoint.

Again I just posit the idea that you’re either a) too idle to change, or b) too stubborn.

It’s dense because it doesn’t align with your opinion? This is why discussions with you people are fruitless. Even more so when you just repeat what is said to you then attempt to defenestrate it without giving any reason as to why it’s wrong. Unless you count hyperbole. The saddest part is that you actually know what you need to go and do to accomplish your goals, you’re just too idle to go and do it and want everything changed back for you.

If karma gear wasn’t worth it, then what’s the problem? People were farming karma in ridiculous quantities by “botting/exploiting/whatever” repeat events, buying the gear and either reselling it, or salvaging it for materials in large quantities. This was obviously not intended…so, it got changed?

I’m not sure why this is a shock. Things change all the time in mmo’s, either becoming easier or more prohibitive depending on what the developers see.

It isn’t really the grubs thing that has people annoyed. It is The entire community getting punished cause of botters/exploiters.

I’m sure if there was a quick way to fix it so that it didn’t affect the legitimate players they would have. But to curtail botters/exploiters immediately, sometimes it has to be drastic.

So the other options suggested are:

- break the mob/trivialize it

how is it different than just making the grubs give no loot? It affecting all grubs kind of sucks, but I can’t be the only person who sees that it’s clearly temporary and unintentional.

Disabling loot/exp off ALL grubs in the game (caledon, random spawns in orr, event spawns) is, without a doubt, the most ham-handed way of resolving this situation.

What would be your solution to the problem, keeping in mind it has to be implemented quickly, minimal development time so as to not let the problem exist for too long as to impact the game any more. People need to look up the term “temporary.”

We were doing a bunch of the dredge areas for vistas and whatnot and we were getting swamped due to the fast respawns…. yet me and my buddy manage to not die once (I think my buddy went into downed state once or twice, but he’s like lvl 46 and I’m lvl 80 in full exotics). Yeah, it sucks that the costs seem so high, but compared to the gains it’s not much…. Also remember, you can get drops around your level; I definitely got a handful of level 76-80 items while I was helping my buddy out.

If you’re dying a bunch in the lower areas, you might need to examine what you’re doing more closely.

Yeah if you’ve got the right gear for doing Dungeons, something with some survivability in it Toughness/Vitality, slumming through low level zones is almost hilarious in how many things you can kill at once.

The cheap ones are cheap because they’re not in demand. Others are quite pricy for their level reqs and then there’s Superior runes which range from like 10s to 2g. It’s not that it’s a low income base, there are many things wrong with the economic model, most importantly people using the TP as their mobile bank, which has more to do with 1c over vendor prices than anything. Which in itself is just strange to me, but yeah people are doing it…

The whole concept of keeping gold scarce to drive people to the gem market though is ludicrous. The only people it will drive there are the lazy.

Food in general is cheap because the materials needed to make it are cheap and abundant. Try purchasing 500 major runes and see how much that costs you.

The money is out there, the onus is on the players to go and earn it. Not have it handed to you. The avenues for which you can earn gold are numerous and easier the more gold you have to begin with.

I gladly pay my 4s to waypoint across thekittenworld every time, why?

1) Because it’s convenient.
2) Because I’m making at minimum 10x that much in return for whatever I end up doing there.

Waypoints are a luxury, not mandatory. If you don’t want to spend 15-20s porting around “noob areas” (the term alone just makes me think you’re all of 13 years old) then you can always run, for free.

What about mounts to bypass content. I think that would become a concern. GW2 has many areas that have large concentrations of mobs, right now you’re somewhat forced to deal with them if you’re trying to get somewhere. Mounts would serve to trivialize that danger.

Most games handle this by forcing you off your mount if you get hit.

The bypassing content argument doesn’t fly with me. All the waypoints are a bit more ridiculous in my mind with regards to bypassing content. Even if you have to find them first, you only need to find them once and then you can bounce around anywhere instantly? Waypoints severely break up the flow of exploration.

Mounts would be far better than waypoints. You should have one recall stone that brings you to your major city, portals, and mounts. Nix the waypoints I say.

Agreed. It’s amusing that people try to argue against the inclusion of mounts on the grounds of “trivialising content” when that is precisely what the waypoint system does. So essentially, they are for the waypoint system because it’s already in the game, but against mounts because they are not.

Forgot about this gem from last week. I’d like to point out that I am not actually arguing against their inclusion as it’s something that’s mostly out of my control anyway, if it happens it happens. However, I did ask a perfectly legitimate question, if the concept is as sound as you pretend it to be it should be able to stand up to any scrutiny. But there’s some flaws in both of your arguments, more so in the latter.

Firstly, waypoints do not exist on every square inch of the game, you do not waypoint into the midst of whatever location you’re trying to get to all of the time, you’re waypointing near to it and then running the remaining distance. You are essentially waypointing to any distance in and around the waypoint up to whatever half the distance is to the next one. You still have to travel, so no waypoints and mounts are not the same thing in terms of bypassing content.

If you’ve noticed in GW2, you do not enter combat until you attack the enemy or they incapacitate/cripple you in some way. You remain at full sprint until then, as for “other games” this holds true for how their mounts generally work, of course I refer to WoW’s mounts as it is the most recognizable version I’m sure. Unless you are dazed, rooted, crippled or engage combat on your own, you remain mounted. This allows you to run through with near impunity, any mobs that you come across before you get to or near your destination. How is that not bypassing content?

If we go with the first suggestion that “when you get hit you’re dismounted,” you’re going to have a pretty awful time riding through somewhere like Orr. Unless the caveat to that is “dismount when you get hit and reduce the density of mobs in zones to accomodate mount travel.” In which case you’re again, trivializing content. The second caveat to this is “mounts are purely cosmetic.” Which, from reading most of the other comments advocating their inclusion is not the intention, but for mounts to be faster than normal sprint speed.

A theory about Dopamine and Guild Wars 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tradewind.6913

Tradewind.6913

Traditional MMOs are so addicting because they are constantly rewarding. When a reward is obtained, dopamine is released and a pleasurable sensation occurs. Dopamine has such a powerful effect that people are even willing to participate in monotony to keep it going.

This is what Guild Wars 2 is lacking that has so many people upset. Players are wondering why they should struggle in explorable dungeons for gear that only looks cool, grind for legendary weapons that can’t even be shown in the Heart of the Mists, acquire titles not shown on name plates, or obtain achievements that cannot be inspected.

ArenaNet constantly stated that Guild Wars 2 would revolve around playing for fun and not rewards. Fine, great, but how is it fun to kill the Claw of Jormag when it is literally impossible for the dragon to win? How is it fun to crawl through such poorly designed dungeons like Honor of the Waves? How is it fun to engage in “dynamic events” that are either laughably easy or have laughable consequences? How is it fun to participate in WvW rampant with server imbalances and invisible armies? Hell, how is it fun to enjoy the personal story when it has a donkey named Traeherne?

For many players, acquiring rewards of substance is the fun. If ArenaNet is going to revolve its game design around fun and not rewards, they should at least make it that way – or otherwise – include better options for those yearning for dopamine.

PS: I still love the game and particularly enjoy structured PvP. Just playing devil’s advocate.
