s/d is the most confusing build in the game for an enemy to play against if specced/utilities are right… 100% nothing more confusing than dozens of teleports with dozens of invis and several dazes and a couple doesnt evades and a heal every 15 secs with dozens of blinds…..although dmg is average its very hard to defend against a professional s/d player which takes many months of mastering……

There are very glaring, widespread issues with the way ranged autoattacks work in this game in general. Most of them have both too slow of an attack rate AND too slow of a projectile speed for the amount of damage they do. This combined with a lack of homing totally breaks a weapon and makes it nearly unusable in high-level play. This is currently affecting Pistols, Longbows, Staffs, and Scepters across professions. Notably, Rifles are not particularly affected.
This actually hits Thieves harder than it does other classes, and the reason why is obvious. The #1 skill is the only free source of DPS, while everything else shares a resource. This means that all Thief weapons need to be configured in such a way where the #1 skill supplies a significant portion of the total potential DPS, which can then be supplemented tactically by the #2-5 skills.
This is largely why P/P is broken. SB was already in the same boat, the only reason people didn’t notice is that Cluster Bomb is really good while Body Shot is awful.

its not perma blind…its blind every pulse….basically every second it blinds so about half the attackes usually miss depending on attack speed. low lvl thieves have low lvl crit % so alot of your dmg is culled due to your lvl. hang tight til you get to higher lvls. learn to use ambush to help lvl and caltrops and hide in shadows. dont be afraid to run around and kite if u need. pick power and hp gear until abuot 50 or 60ish
then go to your regular berskers/valkrye or etc gear. keep it green til 80
Only a bad thief loses to a necro no matter how good the necro is. Thief is a faceroll easy to play class like Mesmer they should beat you and if they dont they are truly bad. The best you can do against a good thief with that build is delay the death that’s coming.
Its a bad matchup necro marks just dont have what it takes to drop a thief thats not pure glass, it would help if Anet puts greater marks with faster recharge in one triat.
Dont stress it you bring more to small scale fights. Yes i agree its a pain fighting a thief same with mesmer its not about skill its about the amount of fighting with the GUI you have to do constantly, you fight the GUI more then the class.

thieves and d/d eles are the hardest to play…..play well at that. mesmers are easy. tell u what. give me 3 choices of class to pick. ill play it and beat you one on one atleast half thetime. all i have truly mastered is thief. so u will ahve the advantage. then tell me how easy it is.

GW2’s “Stealth” dumbs that down to a single button press, taking it to the extreme where it’s possible to disappear from sight on a well-lit day with no cover in the middle of an empty field.

I was in charge of 2 points on the map, our bunker ele held the alter and i would roam between the alter and temple, while the other 3 duked it out at the gate. lol. I had to do some 2v1’s against 2 guards. I’ve had to fight a scepter/dagger dps ele and dps warrior. Just because you dont 1 bang people every 45s anymore doesnt mean the class is broken. lol.
I love this new sword update aswell, in wvw, i’m seeing all these idiot thieves spamming 3 to remove boons rofl.
Just an FYI, its not even worth using sword 3, unless another thief is dagger storming, or necro is in lich form, etc. when they is multiple boons, just ignore it lol. you’re wasting initiative :P
But to help this original poster out on his thief, just run 30/30/0/0/10 and keep spamming 2, when you get tired of it, reroll.

u have some good points and some bad ones. is a thief usless? no…..that is correct…..is it the biggest dmg taker? yep….is it in the top2 dmg outputs? no. so why pick a thief over a bunker or like a dps warrior or dps mesmer? there is no reason…..so are they useless? no…are they as usefull? heck no. so i guess ur talking technicality there right? you can HS anyone to death…thats redic….oh u mean unless somebody else got them under half and u have 15 intiative avail? then yeah u can.. prolly qualify that. 3 is a waste of intiative? it can give health…protecvtion and dmg for 4 initiative plus like just as much as a backstab on the 2nd strike…..the tactical strike is HORRIBLE dmg. so why was CND for 5 just to set up a sub par attack when for 4 initiative u get double the dmg and steal boons and get an evade? hardly a waste. easily the best skill thieves have right now next to backstab. good thieves RARELY use HS anymore.
thief is fun to play. very uncompetitive tho. id like to see anyone average 6k dmg in 4 secs (basically 1 backstabe every 7-8 seconds) and not class cannon…..balanced as u say is so viable….plz show it. plz post a video of spvp if u do. also u may notice all thief wvw videos are not zerg/large group play?……wonder why that is. yishis? useless in zerg play…literally…fun tho. wild bill….more survival in zerg/group play but still 1 target at a time.
I wouldn’t say useless in zergs but yes, much less useful then other classes. Venom share is quite nice for group play and having a thief being a cluster bomb dispensary is also very helpful. But you are right, most thieves will not favor zerg play over small groups fights as they are very limited to what the can bring to the zerg. I wouldn’t call this a issue though. Thieves have their place in WvW.
Back to the sPvP discussion, how do you think the revealed at 4s effects the thief? Do you think it should have been changed back to 3s as well? personally I think its kitten to split that skill like that, its going to be very weird to jump between game modes.
should b 3sec in eachIMO. it allowed p/d to come back tho in wvw. i like that bc of venom share and bleed build. but other than venom share…the only way a thief can support its server is to go in groups of 1/2 and cap camps so it wont waste the zerg’s time. other than that not much….especially since sb was nerfed….i know maybe it was never supposed to be heat seeking…..well whatever…was it supposedto hit weak as guardians…..or be 1 sec each auto rather than stated .25…..???? if they made it faster it wouldnt be a problem…… 3 shots per second is about .25 + activation time. that would make up for the low dmg AND the nerf on heat seeking. :/ thievees just keep getting hit. im remastering my guardian i have put away.
The more I keep using SB, the more depressed I get. What was once my favorite weapon in the game is now a shadow of its former self.

what are you talking about? p/d is a horrible weapon set in a big fight, worse than d/p! d/p at least provides SOME aoe utility with black powder but p/d is just single target bleeds that require melee(CnD) to trigger. Shortbow is really the only weapon to consider in a “zerg fight” that is unorganized. [Not excluding sword builds and others, just saying shortbow is definitely “easier” to play helpfully in bigger fights]
p/d and d/p are both skirmishing sets, for small scale battles.
ok….p/d is muuuuuuuuuuch better for large fights….;let me qualify my statement….i say this with the idea that most play somethign like 10 0 30 30 0. u know….115 point condi ticks…… uncatchable trait…..22k hp…..50% faster in stealth….50% less dmg or vigor on heal….. this build i run thru 40 people like a joke….down a few maybe but i really dont die. i run blind powder…shadow refuge and shadowstep with withdraw/HiS andd dagerstorm which i use for stability and roll out of(keeps stability when needed) or just use it to reflect pesky range. is it bad against d/p? yes……….not much else can keep up with condi removal however. and in a zerg….d/p dies bc it only gets 2.5 secs of stealth instead of 4………… i mean i doubt ur going to get more HSing over teh same black powder spot right? i mean 50 + in a zerg is going to use fear….stun…..KDs…pushes…pulls…..wells….. even if not targeting you they will hit you by accident. and with 14/15k hp you arent going to be able to survive at all. yeah yeah….stay on the edges right? pick off the easy ones? lame….not helping….and conditionally helpful if u can manage more than 1 persons dmg. d/p comes out of invis way to early most the time in big fights and the first cc usually owns it. with the build i said with p/d it doesnt. you get away from several and in a zerg can use caltrops after porting to middle/’back of their zerg and then DS and port back with SS. much more productive and usefull and also survives 10x better….. in a small skirmish….people bring anti stuns and cc skills mostly. yes…..in zergs they bring area dmg and or heals/ AOE ccs. granted they are good. like ive always said. it depends if u wann ahve fun or be productive for your guild. also you can run the same 22k p/d build with just as much survivability and run venom share instead…..just switch out heal in stealth for venom share….and boom ur 10xmore helpful just by sharing devourer….basilisk….and icedrake….with caltrops.
unload doesnt do as muchd dmg as d/d auto…..dps i mean…..over the same tiume :/ although unload with haste is ok…..add in devourer/bv idk….then switch out of p/p b4 u die lol. ive seen people…defensively….not have any idea how to deal with p/p before…went down fast…..p-rolly bc they arent usede to 6-7k ranged in 3 secs or w.e. :P

I’ve tried all of those things – AFAIK, a 0/30/20/20 SD thief has a kittenload of condition removal, and I can’t keep them bleeding (let alone chilled) long enough to do anything.
I use my AoEs extensively. I use my marks, I spread them out and I cast them early then dodge between them to minimise the CD, forcing the thief to come to me and trigger them.
I don’t stand still.
I do use DS extensively. I’ve been a necro since BWE1. I know the AoE hits them, but do remember condi necros don’t do much damage with lifetransfer.
daydream – the thieves I’m having difficulty with are NOT the ones who got their burst nerfed. I’m talking SD, 0/30/20/20, heavy on the port, stealth and autoattack damage.
0-30-20-20 thieves have no damage and bring little to nothing in a team.
they may be strong 1vs1 but useless in everything else ( they’re not even that strong 1vs1 tbh).
I don’t see the point, a good necro is ALWAYS a hard fight for a thief, no matter what build he’s playing.
plz people listen to this….its same with d/p thieves….bring nothign to a team. good 1 v1 or 2v2 or maybe 1v2 but as a big team/zerg….useless…..at best they cancel out 1 person of the enemy zerg on the edge…usually an upscale anyway
best bunker set is carrion. bc of caltrops and hard to catch and blind on invis and death blossom and extra vigor traits. spvp its amazing and i run it in wvw zergs too /sometimes mixed w/ venom share……this sentinel set will never be a better thief bunker set….. as dasorine said.
oh…the new one……not sure it would work for thief……unless u go t 30 30 x x x. no way enough dmg oging out…..idk just my opinion. i think itd be best for a warrior or just mixed in with balanced sets?

A full Zerker thief cant provide that much and will not last in a sustained fight.
And being a free rally for the enemy is never a good thing.

Put a boon removal on body shot (not a steal, just a one boon cancel) Body shot is supposed to be a debuff attack.
Make headshot instant and unblockable, but leave its initiative cost and nerf the damage a little. Headshot is first and foremost an interrupt, not a debuff.
Add a pistol trait that increases backpedal speed to 100% and grants + move speed while unloading.
You just fixed pistol.

Before the patch when you activated a venom and you swinged in the air just pushing #1 without hitting anything (therefore getting “miss”) the effect of the venom disappeared just like if you already applied it or you got blocked, blinded etc.
That patch just said that the effect of the activated venom no longer disappears if you don’t hit anything.

yup. ^^ what he said. if you were to make a dream team of a 100 man zerg i might add in 3-4 thieves for venom share and have them sit in back and tell them not to die. really dont have much use for a thief in this game anymore. atleast before they had enough burst (with a teamates help) any bunker guardian in a few seconds…..which they couldnt do solo. idk….im stay as a guardian….my main thief is going away for some rest

Thieves are a burst class with nothing left once u strip that away. Ur obviously incapable to grasp the concept that a high risk/high reward profession that`s artificially, agonizingly converted into something else will be the punching bag of the more stable ones. And no, thieves have burst and burst only AND some evasive tools. Tell me oh master of everything pvp: what can i do with anything else than a burst spec? true…eles/mesmers take little skill to win….although eles do take skill to play well…only bc they have infitinite spamming of skills and the only real talent is choosing which element to change to and when. the rest is just remember the best order of skill activation in each. mesmers…as you said….dodge…run in a circle to avoid dmg and let clones do 90% of the works (10% comes from clicking shatter and another utility or so that actually doesnt help clones/phants)

from first activating CND to the end animation of BS….yes…mighty close….just like trick shot says .25 seconds but is like 1.15 from start of activation to end of animation (arrow actually leaving bow)
i hope this doesnt get deleted as its not meant as like ummm….idk anti propaganda talk or….instigating as its not meant for that….i think this particular fight i want to show is quite an invaluable teaching/learning tool for thieves and non thief players for a few reasons…..it can teach how to play….how not to play….and show what a thief goes through during 2 of the most “disliked/hated” pvp builds. i truly hope this helps alot of you! so please dont delete. it MAY also help cut down on more topics of similar nature later on. thank you in advance!

-At first you notice the thief starts off with the usual stun/Basilisk venom and CnD….. he actually used CnD first and then used Steal (not a well know trick) so that the skill CnD finishes as the thief reaches his target! Ok some of you say ther is no time to respond. but an experienced wvw/pvp player knows this combo may/probably IS coming. so you have as much time as you can to get your anti stun/cc skill ready/hot. this combo CANNOT be used in stealth so worry not. worst that can happen if a thief starts in stealth is a backstab and a few auto attacks or HS u can dodge(much preferable). if u get lucky he will miss all of his combo….and if ur not a thief im sure you have a block/push skill that will stop it. remember ! 900 range = steal…be ready.
- next you notice that it didnt finish which is more common than not and the d/d burst thief has to run…regardless of who he is fighting….this is so all his skills can reset as he is out of intiative almost and also utilities (including his stealth he used to back out). now is the chance to go on the offensive…swing wildly until the thief shows up. if hes close when he does…he will probably die….and gauranteed die if you are with a group.
-you will notice next even as the d/d burst thief shows up he is still on the run…dodging…trying to get away to by enough time to recharge everything. he does not even attack once until about 55 seconds later as you notice he uses his burst setup again and yet again….it doesnt work….and this is against a squishy thief with mix build…still the easiest class to kill in seconds. so you ahve to be aware of your skiills and between 45-60 seconds be ready for the next assault of burst/stun! save that CC/anti stun!
-next you will notice the tradeoff for the heavy dmg….TWO..yes TWO…..enemies only…attack this thief and his HP dissapears like a rabbit/mosquito! i think one was a guardian another ranger? not like they were high dmging classes…. :P i mean just flattened. wvw is NOT about 1 v 1 so learn to roam with atleast 1 partner and the pesky burst thieves really shouldnt be able to kill you….maybe down 1 but if ur ready they reallyu shouldnt get a stomp off bc they ahve no stability.
PS…….. this is pre nerf as you see mug crits….the mug/cnd combo hit a squishy bum thief for 12k+…..the p/d should have opened earlier with black powder shot and would have prolly got hit by none. players with block would have taken only 6k max …prolly less bc of armor/defense/toughness.
please feel free to comment/add on as this should clear up alot of misconceptions and people whom feel D/D burst is really OP and needs nerfing….again remember….travel in groups…..or in pairs…and also keep in mind….wvw/pvp is about team play not 1 v 1. it means nothing

yeah people dont know it misses atleast half the time….so slow thats why. also p/d is my backup bc i use it when i run into thieves…..its kind of a must when playin against a d/p player. p/d bleed 5 0 30 30 5 is best overall build in game….high condi dmg…high condi removal….22.5k hp…high heals….high invis…..high CC removal…..reapplication of condis are fast……only thing its bad against is d/p condi removal :/
with p/d you use skills 1 and 5 ….rarely 3. i mean you CAN use all ur skills but 90% of the time ur using the same ones to maximize initiative via benefit. you can poison on sb with skill 4. but the bleeds+dmg is like 5x more dmg with cluster bomb skill 2 for same amount of initiative. :P all depends on situation but maximizing effect per initiative …..gotta use same skills……d/p and s/d use them all decently varied.
and 5 on sb? not good for catching up. well i guess i should qualify that too since there is shadowstep…..infiltrators strike….infiltrators signet….steal……skill 3 on d/p and heartseeker which all give better distance per intiative/skill than a 650ish range infiltrators arrow. 650ish!?!?!? woah woah woah wait its not 650…its 900…..well techincally true but really its not. :P
3 is a solid power skill? its on par with dagger auto attack….just to keep it in perspective. :P if u think any of the others are great ur just wron glol….yes 5 is great. HOWEVER i specified with a qualifier “p/p” therefore and hence ….being BAD :P

very true lol. thing about thieves tho…is u actually have to be good to “seem” OP. mesmers any nub can make clones/phantams as a zerker and let them do dmg and blow them up with a button as tehy dodge/run in a circle :P watch a s/d video of a pro . then watch a mesmer one. HUGE difference.
skills 1 2 3 4 and 5 suck…..on p/p…..skills 1 3 4 5 are supar or suck on SB………. shall i go on? not asking to be buffed to the moon but idk…more variety woudl be nice.
@MRMADHZE yeah theieves have no recharge time? they use 2 CnDS then wait 16 seconds for the chance to do it again? yeah no cooldown time :P pffft. btw 50% or more of CNDs miss did u know that? 70% of backstabs miss or hit face or somethign else u didnt mean to. 50% of HS’s actually hit/ are used to hit. and we have no 2nd weapon set. ewll we do but its on the same cooldown. tell u what…..whatever class you are…put skills 1-5 on both sets on the same cooldown. then come yak yak yak at thieves forum. ur not even a thief. go away.
i run 0 30 20 20 0 setup which is mostly defensive with some crit chance. ummm relaly not that great. boon steal is cool but not making up for the crappy defense. thieves get steamrolled in anything larger than 3 v 3…… maybe 4 v4. anymore than that there is just too much AOE to deal with as a fragile character. yeah yeah yeah u can stay on edges or dip out for a sec…then ur leaving ur team at a player disadvantage.
