So, when people say “rangers are a good option for roaming” I think they are misguided. What they mean is, rangers are better at roaming than zerging, but any other class can still do it better.

My ranger is the only char that can easily solo a camp, btw.. I’m sure that every profession should be able to do so, but my main does it without breaking a sweat..

It all depends on the game lore and where they see rangers..

DnD says that a ranger is a heavy armor wearing class with nature abilities (animal empathy, …). And that is indeed nicely implemented in all the DnD based games (Baldur’s Gate I & II, Neverwinter Nights, …).

In Guild Wars a ranger is a medium armor wearing class with a natural bond to its animal companion. And that is indeed also nicely implemented (lorewise): Our pet is always with us..

So not sure here on how to name one with a worse implementation, since I’m quite sure the developers of that game have implemented the ranger class as they saw fit..

Don’t play a ranger in Wvw.
1. You’re the first target in our group.

Bad group, if you ‘d take out the ranger first, ignoring the condi-necro’s and such..

2. You have little to none escape skills.

We have the most natural evades in weapon skills.. Greatsword#3 and I’m way out of your reach..

3. You can either play a bunker build and kill NO ONE, or Play a zerker build and die in 1 shot.

I still run zerker from time to time, and as a ranger, with my natural evades, it works nicely.. Although I’m now running Knight armor with Berserker trinkets, since I needed some more thoughness for guild runs..

4. Everyone else knows rangers suck and will come after you immediately/

5. Your pet ain’t gonna do anything except run around in circles and disobey commanders.

Use your petskills: Heel when needed, switch when needed, F2 when needed..

6. Anyone who says otherwise obvisouly don’t play wvw too often on a ranger.

As mentioned above: If your server has an TS server, why not use that one?
Of course, if you wanna keep your TS server private, you’ll have to host it. (I host my own Ventrilo-server on my desktop computer, combined with the service no-ip.org and some firewall tweaking (to allow the specific port through) allowing others (who have the connection details) to connect wihout issues..

Screw the meta, I run with a drakehound and spider on my berserker ranger as well..
Pets are more than pure DPS machines, they also have some nice cc (you gotta love the spider’s immobilize or the drakehound’s howl).

True, it isn’t showing much of fights against other players (just wasn’t so lucky to encounter any opposition at that moment), but the main activity of a roamer (solo/small group) is flipping camps/towers and take out some stragglers that come to defend..

I’ll have to keep my video capturing software running a bit more this weekend, hoping I’ll encounter some nice fights when roaming..

You said it yourself: it’s the playstyle that suits you best that eventually will become your best style. If you wanna keep ranged, do so..
You’ll learn to use the bow-skills in every situation and learn the strengths and weaknesses..

You’d be quite mistaken if you think that I run front-line with the guards and warriors into a zergfight with my glass armour.. With the guild group: We stack, buff up, our heavies run in, our ele’s stick close, ranger moves to side to flank, … Trust me, I never feel useless in WvW, either solo, either in group..

Btw, WvW battles is more than throwing a zerg into a zerg.. Some strategy, and you can win even outnumbered battles..

Always hard for us to make your choice, OP..

Ask yourself the following: What playstyle do you like the best? Would you rather be the heavy armoured tank with decent heals (guardian) or do you like the thought of medium armour more? Also, do you want to get into melee for fights, or do you feel more comfortable at range?

50% of people here will answer guardian, 50% will answer ranger. But the power of the final choice is in your hands.. :-)

(10 stacks of Ins.Ev. = 10 * 10% = 100% chance to evade dmg from any source)

So that means that if I send my pet solo into a tower where 10 players are standing at the lord room for defense, my pet will simply solo the tower? Awesome

We can bring to WvW:
1) Insane ranged dmg

As mentioned: We can’t bring this all at the same time, you’ll need to adapt your build.. But just wanted to state: We can bring something in WvW.. People that claim that a ranger is useless in WvW don’t have a good grasp on their profession: Experiment a bit more, mess with your traits, and you’ll see..

For people like you only one advice: Delete your ranger and roll another class..

I do all my roaming with my ranger: Longbow/Shortbow as weapons, full zerker for armor/trinkets.. High risk, high reward!
(don’t let the zerker armour fool you though, rangers have tons of natural evades and endurance regen – if I get hit once/twice by the guards when capping a camp, it’ll be a lot)

Today I got rocked by engineer. This guy was bombing me from max range. Sure with the LB I could hurt him but he would just skip out of range and jump back and bomb away. If I got close I was rooted for what seemed like an eternity. When I finally managed to beat him, after several tries it was from an evade of his snares and I felt a missed rotation on his part.

As mentioned above: Engineers can be quite hard when you encounter them, due to their enormous skill variety at hand. Of course, the fact that you were melee-equipped meant that you needed to get in close range, while the engi was having fun at range.. You said it yourself: Should you have LB, you’d be able to hurt him.. (Btw, LB#3, go stealth, sneak up to him and do your (melee) mayhem)

Ranger is one of the hardest classes to play (decently). And that’s the biggest reward it can ever give me: Every time I go for the stomp in 1v1 of 1v2, I am darn proud, knowing I performed almost perfect. We have very little margin for error comparing to (the other extreme) a thief: If a thief screws up his chain, he’ll (most of the time) be able to stealth out of the fight and reset, to retry afterwards.. If you make an error as a ranger, you can expect to meet the Repairs dude after..

Indeed, as mentioned already here: If you activate a skill that is unable to trigger, it will cause a generic recharge of the skill..
Try positioning your back to your target and press LB#2, #3 or #4: Cooldown will appear, but no single arrow was fired..

Also, every LB skill allows movement except for LB#5..

Try to understand why you deem them to be “useless” and then check if any of the patches has changed this.. It could very well be that the spirit ranger’s playstyle is not at all suited for you..

You should check out the WvW subforums and see how eager ANet is to fix bugs/exploits that have been going on for a year now..

I agree, it’s hateful, but as long as there is no dev who was frustrated by it, it won’t see a fix..
