hmm… im not sure but i think spirit ranger with settler amulet still can hold a home node and effective in supporting the team at mid fight.
if you want to bunker or serve as home node defender, try using settler instead.
it really depends on your playstyle. if you wanna kill people really fast you can go glass cannon. ranger can use signets to avoid the burst damage from the thief and then melt the thief in seconds before he can react. i use a full glass build in wvw and i really dont have any complaints about it when it comes to 1v1 and roaming with a small group. my build is the usual 6 6 0 2 0. it’s very glassy but with enough practice can be very lethal.
i havent tried the regen build in wvw but they say it’s also good. in spvp, ranger is top tier because of the spirit build but sadly this build is not viable in wvw.
when i play tpvp with my guildies, this is our usual composition: a warrior as a home defender, a thief who is a team fighter at mid, another thief (a roamer), a guardian who is a bunker at mid and a spirit ranger with a warhorn who can move fast from mid to home or mid to far.
thieves are not bunkers but they are still meta. this is confusing. O.o
it doesnt matter what class you play, if you’re bad youre bad. the class isnt even relevant. i kill warriors, thieves and guardians in wvw all the time, and i’m playing a zerk ranger.

i main a ranger both in pvp and wvw. the class just doesnt bore me. i tried playing other professions but they dont give me the same fun and excitement that the ranger can give me.
if you are afraid to stand on a point then you should not be playing a spirit ranger build. that build is meant to play as a home point defender and a team supporter. you need to stand on the node. it will happen that your spirits would die from aoe that’s why you need to have nature’s vengeance.
the radius of the buff is not that big and if you are kiting your enemies from the side, im sure not all your teammates would get the buff. the main purpose you are there was to buff them. a spirit ranger should be aggressive. you fight like a guardian and a warrior. you need to change your build if you think you are dying fast.
Ranger has never been out of the meta since time immemorial when it comes to spvp/tpvp. If you really wanna know how strong and useful a ranger can be, play a spirit ranger. this build is the most viable a ranger has in high ranked tourneys.
Spirit Ranger is all about team support. You play that build not to be a spiker but to buff, heal, and rez your teammates. If you are playing it to kite your opponents from afar then you are playing it wrong.
who uses this set-up and what do you think about it?
i beat people 1v1 in wvw and it doesnt matter what class and it doesnt matter what build i am using lol. i dont find it unusual though, maybe because i played pvp in a long time before i dove in to wvw.
GS is a somewhat the preferred weapon for zerk rangers but sb is fine. Just dont forget to use qz to pump it up.
it feels like rangers just get ignored each patch. no good stuff for us. we just need to work harder than the other classes. so sad.
ive been doing some hotjoins because of the constant 4v5’s i am getting these days. what i’ve noticed is that most high ranks would stack in one team and demolish the other team that has low ranks. anyway, all you have to do is spectate and see where the high ranks are. i feel bad for the new players practicing in hotjoin.
you think a zerker ranger will not use quickening zephyr to burst you down before you can even react? a zerker ranger can deplete that 20k hp in a matter of what? maybe 5 seconds or less. qz is a quickness buff. that 6 second immunity is enough to burst down that build before you can even damage the ranger.
half of that time he will be in shield stance, 2 more seconds of dodging, and you now have 1 second to burst him down???
dude, a good ranger will make you use all your skills to cooldown before he bursts you down. 1st he’s gonna make you swing that hammer, i’m sure you will do that. make you try to use your block after he knocked you back and rapid fire and then qz you to death. 22 seconds of stability is enough to make you get all your knockbacks and stuns on cooldown.
tbh, a thief is far more challenging to fight than an ez cheese mode hambow.

4% crit chance is close to nothing. lol. a zerker ranger with 22 seconds of stability from RaO and 6 seconds of immunity to raw dps from signet of stone will eat you alive if you use this build. you’d be swinging that hammer to no avail.

But does it have to hold a point, why can’t the Ranger be a roamer? Has Ranger been exclusively stereotyped into that role?
a ranger is well-known to be one of the best home-node defenders. if you want to be a roamer why not just go full zerk? you can kill people faster as a zerk ranger 1v1.

a good ranger can beat a thief 1v1. we have stun on our shortbow which will hinder a thief to stealth and we also have rapid fire that can track a thief on stealth. i dont mean to brag but the percentage of me beating a thief 1v1 in wvw is fairly high.
oh i love the rune of the pirate. the parrot attacks like a madman. lol.
phantasms hit like a truck. it’s just insane. i hope this will be looked at as soon as possible.
BM is a good build but sadly it cannot hold a point.
It is vvery easy to dodge the slow hammer attacks assuming you know the rotationa nd see them coming. You shouldnt be getting stunlocked if you dodge and interrupt their attacks.
The point me and Vuh are trying to get across is to time your dodges and dont randomly use up your dodges. If you cant do that then Stability is your only other choice.
i think he already knows that, man. a hambow is hard to fight against if you dont have stability because eventually you will run out of stun breakers and dodges. if this guy is running a non-bunker build, most possibly he’d be stunned to death without a fight.
So there are invincible guardians and engiees who heal for more than you can deal with 2 people next to you and many other cheap builds you can use. But so far the most frustrating one I’ve seen, is this cheap Stun-Warrior. I’m not even joking when I say I don’t get to click a single skill on my ranger, and that’s wit having some decent HP(carrion gear) and defensive traits(pet takes some conditions and knockbacks etc.). Today my entire team has been brutally murdered over and over again by this cheap warrior using hammer. I’m not sure what to do, if even with my defensive things, tons of dodges, fears and pushbacks, this warrior still can just jump on me and kill me in seconds, shouldn’t it be nerfed? What’s with the cooldown of this thing? I get stunned and knockbacked over and over again. Nerf it, please…a lot. That’s coming from a guy who’s favourite class is warrior.

Oh I know how to fight them. The problem here is, this cheap build turns all pvp into “who hits first wins” fights. Do you think it’s fair? Ambush should give you some advantage, but not a guaranteed win. As I told you, I kill most warriors. But I can hardly do anything against someone who doesn’t give me a chance to fight back. I don’t refuse anything, you seem to pull your weird assumptions out of nowhere. I said a warrior, ONE, this build was used on me by one of them, and even though it’s rare, when I meet one – it annoys the crap out of me. Not because I’m losing, but because I’m losing this way. why are you not getting the OP’s point? a warrior can spam interrupts like there’s no tomorrow. everybody knows that. besides, i already gave this guy a good advice to use Rampage as One. That is the best defense a ranger has against a stun-spamming hambow.
people should start bringing zerkers with them if they wish to kill these stun spammers. a zerker ranger could quickly dps this spec down in a team fight.
this bunker meta is becoming old and boring. we need changes.
Also you have tons of dodges and evades, dodge thier attacks.
i dont think it’s just the stuns that annoy him but also the never-ending interrupts by a hambow. a warrior can spam interrupts using his hammer. im just happy im a ranger because i can easily counter them using our elite.

Oh thank you! That’s actually really helpful. I use Entangle most of the time, but that one will definitely work better in these cases. I’ll remember it next time I meet a cheap-kitten warrior.
As far as I know Entangle only works with other rangers. Other classes can easily destroy those vines and a thief can stealth or use teleport to escape it.

Rangers can be go a good bunker and roamer/spiker. It really depends on your playstyle. A ranger is well-known to be a home node defender in tpvp.
If you want to be a bunker, you can play a spirit ranger which is very efficient as a duelist and also a team fighter/support. Trap rangers can be a bit weak but if played correctly can be be very useful for the team. If you wanna be a roamer, you should go full glass cannon. It maybe a risky build but it has high rewards. You can move fast from node to node to decap and it can also be a good duelist vs other roamers.
i can easily beat a hambow 1v1 on my zerker ranger but only if i have Rampage as One available. they can stun and interrupt me all they want for 22 sec to no avail. lol

The goes for all classes but especially thiefs because basically the team with the most thiefs loses atm.
I feel this was true of ele too. At least before the patch, I can’t say how it is atm because I didn’t play much since the last balance patch (dem balthazar runes!). But I’ve never seen teams with 2+ ele win unless the other team spectacularly failed, like, so bad they should never even touch an online game again. Seeing an ele on my team always felt so cringy since only the best players can barely make it work at a decent level and most of the case the ele you get paired with in soloq aren’t that mythical unicorn ele player. I’ve even seen one who plagued 50% of my morning soloq by staying in water attunement most of the time spamming staff skill 1.
ele hate still exists. i thought they were hugely buffed.

i beg to differ. longbow is a tpvp weapon. longbow has stealth and it’s a great weapon to kill a thief. you have to understand the use of this weapon to be effective. it’s a utility weapon. longbow can be used to knockback. you can use it when you are playing on the skyhammer. you can use it to knock ele’s off to the zerg so they would stop bursting your team. this weapon can be used to stealth away from uneven fights.
pls stop promoting braindead builds like spirit ranger. a good zerker ranger can beat a spirit ranger 1v1.

I tried substituting Signet of the beastmaster for Read the Wind and protect me (which is roughly the same as SoS). The problem was you lost your mobility. So then I subbed for travelers runes, then you lost your burst from SoH.
Signet of the beastmaster should not be competing with Read the Wind. Move it down a tier or make SoB baseline like every other signet in the game.
I like to have more than one of my grandmasters too as a thief. But we all can’t be all to end all. Need to decided whether you want survivability or damage. Not both.
Signet of the beastmaster is not worthy of a GM trait. Compare it to all other signets across the game. How would you feel if you had to choose between Executioner and making your signets actually have an active effect? It’s silly to have to devote a GM trait just to make signets function the SAME way other signets do for all other professions.
Your survivability is inherent to your profession, you have both….not sure where you are coming from.

i think Read the Wind would work in wvw and pve but definitely not in pvp if you wanna play a glass cannon ranger. SoB is our only defense against burst damage from thieves, mesmers, and eles.
btw, i use Signet Mastery, Eagle Eye, and SoB. i just couldnt imagine not having those traits as a zerk ranger. the build itself is very risky and we need all the range and defense we can get to achieve our role as a roamer and spiker.

for spirit build: sigil of fire and sigil of smoldering.
for zerker build: sigil of accuracy and sigil of fire.

just get a zerker attack that ele and he will drop dead in no time. honestly, condi spam nowadays is over the top.
yah know what kills a mesmer is to stun the real one and then burst them after.
