Wild Idea of the Day:

Give the Air Overlaod AoE 5 target Taunt with a 600 range. Nice tornado/suction effect as all the enemies come zipping towards you.

Taunt and Resistance are two areas the vanilla Elementalist definitely doesn’t’ cover yet.

That is a true thing. Taunt provides roles the ele just didn’t cover, but if the ele is going to take damage it should be able to do it, so protection uptime is highly necessary.

Whenever you gain an aura, gain resistance.

I don’t think they’d do that because eles can already generate many boons, but surely it would create a very particular usefulness for auras.

On a related note, if they’re changing Heat Sync, it should spread auras or at least Fire Auras, so it would combo nicely with such trait.

Nah, you’re just being a class fanboi. This is an appreciation thread for those (and ONLY for those) who enjoyed the long overdue fix for Ice Bow soberany, and D/D immortality. Now there isn’t a single reason for not adding strong damage/healing to elite specs, as it is no longer OVERPOWER. Eles are finally on pair with all the other classes, only squishier, but surely yesterday’s balance patch wasn’t the final one.

You do know it goes both ways right? You’re being a Developer Fanboy and not realizing that the tweet plus the subsequent “joke” as you put it is simply unprofessional and not what you want to see from the company making the game.

Even more so because it really looks like the devs in charge of balance are not impartial and are very biased.

Also, calling somebody else “fanboy” is just about the lamest way to dismiss other people’s arguments as not important.

Nope. I just thought it was a funny way to announce the nerf, and people are living a drama here, as if the class relied only on a single skill from a single conjure, which IMO is an immature attitude anyways.

Totem skills

Totems are ground-targeted, medium health, destructible artifacts. The goal for totem skills is to have a very particular identity, as such all of them stun the attacker when destroyed, apply an effect to 3 random allies/foes or yourself while alive, and change effects depending on varied criteria. Totems last for the duration of its recharge if not destroyed.

Water Totem
Totem. Summons a water totem that heals allies upon placed, and then apply regeneration to random allies. Heals for a short amount if the ally already has regeneration. Stun attacker if destroyed.

  • Maximum Allies: 5
  • Regeneration: 3 seconds
  • Healing(If Target Has Regeneration): Low
  • Stun: 1.5 second

[Concept] Elite Specialisation - The Shaman

Following Jekk’s idea (and due to boredom), I came up with a concept for an ele spec. I didn’t conceptualize traits because I suck at those so feel free to spam ideas.

General idea: The shaman is an attempt at providing a role for condition damage for elementalists. The axe skills are very meaningful to enable this spec new form, but similar approach can be achieved by using some other weapons and/or utility skills. I tried to keep NUMBER OF TARGETS in mind, and put a key skill in water to promote a Healing+Condition synergy to the spec. You can see an intentional pattern across the weapon skills which tie into the burning condition.
The Inferno Avatar is an attempt at being a “Don’t Touch Me!” wandering fireball, much like Flame Legion Effigies seen in charr lore/maps, some traits can be created to promote tank-ish builds. The core idea is to prevent the shaman from staying for a long time in this form, and to accomplish that there’s a health depletion (3%/second). There is, however, traits to help with that.

Introduction

“I have my own rules of magic shaping.”

Shamans are Elementalists that studied further into the old school of Agression and learned to harness a powerful magical rite to become a living Inferno, while using an offhand axe to increase the pressure.

Mastering the full potential of the Shaman might be quite dangerous due to how fast their inner power shifts, but it is surely rewarding and strong. To support this spec, eles now have access to a brand-new type of skill: the totems.

Specialisation Mechanic
Shamans have access to a new powerful form called Inferno Avatar, which changes their weapon skillbar. Entering this form requires dealing a certain amount of condition damage to enemies, and will deplete 3% of the Avatar health bar over time (aka Death Shroud). Inferno Avatar will also periodically apply burning to nearby foes. Inferno Avatar health bar is reset upon leaving the form.

Effects While in Inferno Avatar Form

  • Inferno Core: Your body is being slowly consumed by fire. Depletes 3% of your health per second.

Inferno Avatar skills

  • Inferno Avatar: Enters Inferno Avatar form. Depletes health over time.
    • Hellfire(3s): Your presence periodically burns nearby foes. Your inner fire protects you from chilled.
    • Interval: 3 seconds
    • Burning: 1 stack, 5 seconds
    • Recharge: 30 seconds

PS.: Recharge starts after LEAVING the form.

Skill 1 – Lava Chains
Chain. Strike your foe with lava chains.

  • Damage: Low
  • Range: 200
    • Empowered Chains
      • Chain. Strike your foe with stronger chains, and empower you.
      • Damage: Low
      • Might: 1 stack, 5 seconds
      • Range: 200
        • Scorching Chains
          • Chain. Whip your foe and apply burning.
          • Damage: Low/Medium
          • Burning: 1 stack, 4 seconds
          • Range: 200

Skill 2 – Meltdown
Rushes at the target to inflict burning, increasing the intensity if the target is chilled.

  • Damage: Low/Medium
  • Burning: 1 stacks, 4 seconds
  • Burning(If Chilled): 2 stacks, 4 seconds
  • Range: 1,000
  • Recharge: 12s

Skill 3 – Consume Flames
Ignites bright flames around you which periodically heals you, and convert burning on you and your allies into heal.

  • Healing: Low
  • Heal Per Burning Stack: Low/Medium
  • Duration: 8 seconds
  • Pulses: 4
  • Radius: 450
  • Recharge: 25s

Skill 4 – Shadow Phoenix
Summon a Shadow Phoenix that swirls around the shaman, crippling foes and burning them. Destroy the Phoenix to deal damage and apply blindness to nearby foes.

  • Shadow Phoenix(11s): Your creation is viciously hunting its enemies.
  • Swirl Radius: 500
  • Swirl Cooldown: 5 seconds
  • Damage: Low
  • Crippled: 3 seconds
  • Burning: 1 stack, 8 seconds
  • Maximum Targets: 5

    • Phoenix Ashes
    • Destroy your Shadow Phoenix to deal massive damage and apply blindness to enemies.

Skill 5 – Inferno
Erupts a grand volcano at your location, then unleash a fiery impact that pulls enemies into the volcano and traps them, dealing damage and converting boons to burning.

  • Volcano Radius: 400
  • Pulses: 3
  • Pull: 1,200
  • Pull Per Pulse: 300
  • Boons Converted Per Pulse: 1

Skill 5 – Sharp Boomerang
Throw your axe in an elipse fashion that returns to you, stripping boons from enemies as it travels and dealing extra damage per enemy hit.

  • Boons Removed Per Target: 1
  • Range: 900
  • Recharge: 40s

Water

Skill 4 – Mending Water
Charges a water burst that will heal and regenerate nearby allies, and damage nearby foes.

  • Healing: Medium
  • Regeneration: 3 seconds
  • Maximum allies: 5
  • Maximum Targets: 5
  • Radius: 300
  • Recharge: 35s

Skill 5 – Hot Stream
Unleash a hot stream in front of you that heals allies applying might if they have regeneration on them, and damages foes spreading their burning around.

  • Maximum Surrounding Targets: 3

Deliver an electric blow on your target and leap backwards, leaving them weak and creating a static link that will allow you to pull them.

Electrify your axe and channel thunder on your target, making them vulnerable while channeling. Once finished, burn your target and launch foes around them.

you won’t be able to play a condi spec with tempest as long as not all attunements offer some kind of condition damage. can’t really see that happening, maybe with the release of the 3rd elite spec, because the 2nd will hopefully be dps sword.

That is sad… I know you guys must love melee agressive gameplay, and I like it aswell, but I wanted to experiment the condition possibilities of an ele. Some elite specs are getting so distinct functionalities/purposes, I admit I’m a bit jealous.

I really wanted to know what offensive path Karl is going for with Tempest, if he is at all. There’s been hinting at the possibility of a truly Condition Damage based spec, so if EP gets merged with something it would be cool to have something attached to condi, like while wielding a warhorn. Or maybe some interesting procs.

Wild Idea Moment (disregard if you’re not feeling the crazy today)

What if triggering overload immediately KICKED you out of your current attunement, putting you in one of your other available attunements at random. Really play up that wild and out-of-control surge of power? Its a drawback justifying some of the love Overloads still need and it’s intensely thematic for wielding forces beyond the scale other Elementalists dare.

It also raises skill cap as a good Tempest has to be able to respond quickly to leverage whichever attunement he lands in without being able to control where he’s gonna land after the Ka-Boom.

I don’t think that would work because the idea itself is CAMPING attunements, so I’m more fond to the first idea and buffs based on how much time you stay in an attunement. It just shouldn’t be too simplistic, Overload Air effect is a wonderful example of unique buffs for the Tempest. I really like when they’re bold and stray a bit far from the same boon/condition scheme, that is, with particular effects. Druids are getting one too.

My biggest issue with Overloads is that we are punished too harshly for trying to use them. Or rather, we are not incentivized enough to use them. The way I see it, Tempest’s biggest difference from vanilla Ele is that it discourages Attunement dance. However, if they want to encourage staying in an Attunement with the eventual goal of Overloading, then not only does the Overload have to be powerful, but there also needs to be some inherent bonus to staying in the Attunement while the Overload charges up. At the moment, our weapon skills have too long individual cool downs to make Attunement camping worth it, and auto-attacks other than Fireball and Lightning Whip are lackluster. Which is why I keep suggesting a Grandmaster Minor trait that gives us a stacking, Attunement-specific, non-strippable, non-shareable buff each second that we remain in an Attunement.

Would you be satisfied with something along the lines of~

  • “When your current attunement is recharged you gain +15% cooldown speed on all weapon skills.”

Which would make Tempest completely unlike core Elementalists in wanting to stay in a single attunement to pump out that single attunement’s effects faster.

It makes popping the Overload (with it’s stun break ) a real tactical decision and not something you mash as fast as it comes up. Camp your souped-up sped up weapon skills or throw the big button and move on to another attunement?

+1 interesting motivation to sit in an attunement.

Hey all.

I just returned from San Francisco and am going to crash hard from the busy weekend at Twitch Con very soon, but first I wanted to clarify something:

During the skill balance stream on Friday we weren’t able to go into depth or even talk about the reasons and expected results for changes we did reach due to time constraints[sub]1[/sub]. Because the June 23rd patch was mentioned during the stream many people seem to expect a patch of that size and magnitude.

This coming patch is NOT that big.

Tuesday’s patch will have those changes we discussed in the livestream, some bugfixes, and more, but it is a step in the right direction. It is not the end-all.

There shall be more.

One thing to note is that water fields sometimes disrupt fire fields, and being able to healing on a constant basis without screwing fire field blasting is sure a plus.

In what content over the last 3 years have you ever been called on to do nothing but heal? Elementalist has always been, and has always excelled as a class that can shift roles on the fly mid-combat. A heal-speced Druid heals… and if they use their on the fly role swap… they STILL HEAL.

If you can’t figure out how to bring more to a situation with 4 attunements and 20 weapon skills Elementalist probably isn’t the class for you in the first place. But if you can weave the elements and damage, CC, withstand, and heal as needed the prospect of being a mono-healer ought to look pretty kitten dull even with the shiny new FX. (and you can do it all without the stupid pet AI….)

Well, I know, but the nature of the class (attunements) is preventing the spec from becoming something somewhat refreshing in terms of gameplay. I pretty much wanted to see more focused roles with Tempest. Chronomancers for instance, got a particular buff, I did believe eles would have it to differentiate from the base class, but they’re still playing around the very same scheme we always had, we’re just delivering the effects from another angle. It doesn’t feel different at all.

It’s cheering how he is against the zerker meta, and how he – as one of THE devs behind overall PvE balance – is trying very hard to end this bs culture. According to him, zerker meta is a thing of the past, and needs adjustments to disappear so to open up more variety in PvE.

Tempest was never supposed to be a pure healing spec like druid. This was obvious since its reveal and is nothing new. Tempest is simply a failed support spec that relies on sub-par auras and does nothing to actually make them good. Tempest also brings some healing and boons as a bonus, but they are not enough to make it competitive atm.

I know, it’s just disheartening. Tempest is getting behind every other single elite spec. No funny PvP videos against noobs will convince me at this point, they have to show a role where Tempest does good, or we’re forced to completely ignore this spec. This game isn’t all about animation or ocasional buffs, it’s about SYNERGY, and Tempest is officially under tuned in every way now.

Per title. Why would anyone try and squish bits of healing when a single druid can rule it all? It’s got GREAT healing for all sorts of situation, and it’s constant with lots of protective buffs. Tempest can’t even remotely match druid’s effectiveness, even base ele fully traited with water/arcane. It’s just hilarious, druid heals while attacking, and heals back by every delivered heal, which increases its HEALING. Like, wtf?

I hope that at least they don’t break the condi builds that me and quite a few people have been making, because it’s different than Fireball/Lava Font gameplay we’ve had for 3 years now.

I see the bigger picture. D/D damage was broken, with that out of the way it’s possible to get more creative in ele traits. Earth can now make a comeback, but they should review some traits. Diamond Skin threshold specifically, it’s ridiculous, a few hits and we’re under that threshold TOO MUCH easily.

Lightning Orb: It would be great if we could swap location with the orb on 2nd tab. This would make it a great and unique tool for mobility and also improve damage on enemies standing still or moving elsewhere, since we could make the orb move through them twice. Also just make it move into the direction the character is facing.

I like this aswell. Something I told on my first feedback is a weird lack of mobility from the weapon itself, totally contrary to being “tempestuous”, and actually it doesn’t make sense from any angle…

Hi guys, recently something has been bugging me about this buff. See, this is not a rant (even if it may sound so), and I don’t claim to know everything about balance, but why is super speed so widespread among professions?

If my memory serves it was introduced as an elementalist “thing”, although also present in a Mesmer trait and some Engineer skills. But now it’s appearing as the main component for Scrapper traits, and don’t forget Herald elite. It kind of lost its uniqueness.

Again, not a rant. I’m curious to know what you think about its current state.

Me and my best friend always play together. He lives like 3,000km away from me. Sometimes he gets a sudden lag spike and freezes, his ping goes up to 800ms-900ms, then suddenly drops, but it’s weird that my state is far away from Miami international link and his state is way closer. That might be some routing issue with his state though. We both play from Brazil.

What if… Keys were a PvP track reward?

Nice Idea! Please add them as a dungeon completion reward also (for those of us who do not play PvP).

Change the dungeons to have all paths active at once and it all has to be completed | Vanquished | Cleared for the end chest to contain a Black Lion Key XD

That way it takes as much or more time as a low level key farm, removes server strain from character creations, improves dungeons so that are not “run” but Vanquished (like gw1 Vanquishing reward), improves dungeons to be more desirable.

Only if you complete all paths of a dungeon.

How could you nerf Warhorn Heat Sync when Signet of Inspiration does the same thing it was doing on a class that can 1-shot people from stealth? Where is the logic?

How can it be overpowered for ele but fine for another class with a better health pool that has stealth?

I agree with this. Water Globe isn’t gonna cut it I’m afraid, despite being an awesome skill it is not what makes Warhorn shines, Heat Sync is.

I disagree risk/reward is worse, the change to Air and Earth are pretty much fine for me. They’ll serve different purposes, and depending on numbers they might be decent.

What happens if he is fighting you and an engi, and you both use thunderclap on him? I can already see you are unwilling to back down from your original “its just a name” comment, so not expecting you to come to your senses now either, but the more you continue the bigger hole you are digging for yourself, quite embarrassing really.

Not even a little bit embarrassing, no. Last time I checked, hovering skill names on combat log displayed a very indicative tooltip. But, oh well, if you guys want the name changed so badly, go for it, if that improves the game for you.

For clarity sake no 2 combat skills should ever share the same name.

There are people out there in PvP who actually use the combat log and it’s kinda important to keep ambiguity to a minimum.

That’s why skills have distinct icons. It’s much better to distinguish skills visually.

That’s nice and all but what do ICONS have to do with the COMBAT LOG which is TEXT only.

If you know I’m an ele, and I hit you with a Thunderclap, that’s self-explanatory.

Slayer achievements are too lackluster, and doesn’t even get close to a bestiary collection. Imagine all the creatures hidden away in open world JPs, or mini-dungeons, or raids, or even in the new WvW maps? Wonderful!

The reason that the boon removal on the skill was removed was never explained to us. Even if its toned down to be less boon removal, I still think that boonhate is a serious potential niche for tempest to help differentiate from base elementalist in terms of functionality.

Wildfire could at least remove might from enemies, so then we would share our might to allies with heat sync and remove might from enemies with wildfire. Might management with fire attunement of warhorn.

This is one of the best ideas I have read regarding Wildfire. It provides some serious play against heavy might-stacking classes.

Another idea with different purpose:

  • Heat Sync: Cast purging flames on self that converts conditions to might, and spread it to allies. If no condition is converted spread fire aura instead.
    • Might: 3stacks per condition (14s)
    • Fire Shield: 6s
    • Conditions Converted: 2

Not sure if useless, but at least some play to it. Might require increasing cooldown…
