Then focus on how they did things Vayne, instead of constantly claiming they invented everything. Leave that to Al Gore.

Most of this game has been done, before. Very little can be claimed as innovation.

Doesn’t make it a bad game. Or good. Or diminish anything they have done.

Again, the way things are combined is what makes it unique, and original. There are plenty of examples I can give of recombined things that are far better than any of the originals.

I’ve spent time writing and editing and there are simply very few new ideas. That doesn’t mean that certain books don’t take those ideas to a new level. That’s what Guild Wars 2 did.

It doesn’t matter that other games did various things. That’s not what makes the game unique. What makes it unique is the specific combination of things.

By your standards no book can ever be innovative, because everything in it has been done before. I’d categorically disagree with this assessment.

Allow utility skills in slot #10?

I would be okay with the elite slot being opened for utility skills but I am completely against the healing slot being opened.

Part of the reason the skill system was designed as it was was to make it easier for people to have a reasonably decent build. There are a lot of people who simply wouldn’t take heals who would absolutely need them. Then you’ll just hear nothing about survivability complaints.

In GW1, every single profession had a self-heal and half the time people didn’t take them and depended on a single monk, who had six other people to heal. Predictably the people without self heals often died more than others, then yelled at the monk.

Some people need extra help to survive.

In fact, WvW was NEVER supposed to be balanced 1v1. It’s group v. group and the odds are you wearing ascended gear or not won’t make the difference.

I wrote about upleveled characters running around in WvW with blues and greens. The odds that I’m wearing ascended gear and smiting them to pieces is very high. Even if it’s a Zerg vs Zerg, low level geared players tend to suffer.

My point is this:

Exotics was the equivalent of legendary weapons the previous time.
Ascended has an increase % in stats that has a clear difference in both WvW and Dungeon (5 players with ascended makes a difference.)
You can complete a dungeon faster with Ascended > Exotics > Rares > Greens in terms of time.

Do I think Ascended is a must obtained item? Yes. Simply because it offers faster completion of anything that requires damage/higher HP. If I have one hour to play everyday, I wish that I can do more in that one hour, and not hit the same monster X 100 times when I can finish it in 99 times and move on to more content.

Faster completion by how much? Do you have any idea? Do you know what percentage of the playerbase cares about completing something 1 minute or 2 minutes sooner.

Yes, there are a some hard core farmers who care. I say let them care. I’m pretty sure that the largest percentage of the playerbase isn’t stressed by this.

If you are…okay. Doesn’t phase me at all. I’m playing the game and enjoying myself.

BTW, I have ascended gear on a single character and a number of alts. I think I’d need stop watch to see a difference.

1500 plus dynamic events replace quests in other games. Other games have the same sorts of quests over and over again. Most games release with 500 quests. The content DEs are supposed to be replacing are quests, not dungeons.

There are, however, actually mini-dungeons in the game that are more challenging than open world content, but not as challenging as full dungeons.

The idea that dungeons require teamwork is just something that’s been instilled into us from other MMOs. It’s not what a dungeon is. In fact, there are many games that have solo dungeons. And even in Guild Wars 1 you could have a party of NPCs and you and solo a dungeon.

Anet has already published a blog post about what to expect in the first half of this year and in fact, the focus for the year in general. Beyond that, I don’t think they need to post nor should they.

For one thing, the further out you are from a release, the more it’s likely to change. Have you seen what happens when Anet changes something? The forums become a war zone. I don’t see any reason why Anet needs to release long term plans, particularly if they might change.

It’s just asking for trouble.

Is that true really true with the other MMO? GW2 is my first MMO, and from what you said, you need full gear to go into some dungeon runs in WoW or something?

In any case, what you say about everything is playable in greens is true. I can go into WvW and get myself killed with all greens and still claim it’s playable. How about you go into WvW using all greens, maybe use an upleveled character too, and go into WvW and play? That’s certainly still playable.

Or about going into Arah explorables with a full party of all greens! That will make it exciting too!

I’m not even sure how this argument works. I can use a white dagger and stab a mob 1000 times before killing it, or I can use an exotic dagger and kill it in 500 strikes. It’s still playable.

Well, let’s put it a simpler way. I’ve beaten Arah without exotic armor, and without any ascended gear. Likewise in WvW, I win far more battles than I lose without ascended gear. In fact, WvW was NEVER supposed to be balanced 1v1. It’s group v. group and the odds are you wearing ascended gear or not won’t make the difference.

I mean if you personally think that you can beat Arah with ascended gear and you wouldn’t be able to beat it without, let me put it to you another way.

Arah existed before ascended gear and people still beat it.

And yes, in most MMOs there is a hard requirement to have specific gear to do specific influences. When I played Rift, you couldn’t even queue for a dungeon if you didn’t meet the gear check. The game wouldn’t allow you.

No, I did not play GW1, but I have heard of DR from it. It’s just as well, GW2 isn’t for a casual gamer. All MMORPGs are reliant of you logging in everyday to grind for things.

You’d be right if you needed those things to play the game… but you don’t. The only area of the game that might be considered gear-locked is the higher levels of the fractals, but you get stuff in the fractals to deal with that. It’s self contained.

Everything else is playable even with rare, or green gear, never mind legendary. You have convinced yourself you need BIS gear to play this game…but it’s not true.

Actually there are several things Anet can do to make Leaderboards “fairer”. I’ve already talked about having different ones for dailies/no dailies, but how about this.

SPvP already has it’s own leaderboard. Not everyone SPvPs though and the Achievement Leaderboard has both a WvW and SPvP achievement column in it. What about making a purely PvE achievement leaderboard, for those who will never PvP?

So leave the name calling out of it, make your points without them and let the reasonable people watching decide which of you they’d rather believe.

Every game is amazing until it’s released. Then people flock to it, some stay, and some are disappointed and leave. We’ll see how Wildstar does once it’s out six months.

Missing all the skills from GW1

Vayne.8563

Honestly, having had balancing experience, I especially don’t believe Guild Wars 1 is hard to balance. Tedious yes, difficult no.

In my opinion it was an issue of resources to actually implement the skills rather than balance. I imagine GW2 is a lot easier to work with for skills.

It wasn’t just skills. It was skills in combination with the secondary profession that made it hard to balance. No matter what ANet did, someone would always find a “loophole” that made professions totally OP, like the perma-sin for example.

Anet has talked about how hard it was to balance, which is why I say it was.

I miss the complexity of builds from Guild Wars 1 also. However, the profusion of skills made the game, particularly in the later stages, nearly impossible to balance and it led to a whole lot of other problems.

So while it’s nice on paper, I’d prefer to not have them in the game.

I’m assuming that as the game goes on, more skills will be added and traits will be changed to provide more variety.

I truly enjoy playing this game. Do you?

It’s always been this way on MMO forums. There’s a very vocal negative minority who say all kinds of stuff…much of it opinion stated as fact. They can’t see that plenty of people are enjoying the game, and having a good time.

I’m having a ball. But I can also understand where certain people are coming from with their complaints. For example the GW 1 players who expected something closer to what they were used to. Anyone would feel dispossessed by something like that.

Which doesn’t mean the game is bad. I think the only thing you can do is supply the other point of view so lurkers can see it, and move on.

Find a guild of like minded people and play with them. Make your own community. Solve your own problem. That’s my advice.

I play with my guild 90% of the time and never have the problems you’re describing.

That sounds like good advice on the surface, but unfortuantly ‘a guild of like minded people’ isn’t something that just falls into your lap. It can take months or years of searching, and on some servers it’s just not possible.

I am in the market for a decent guild though …:)

Well for one thing you have to define your play style. For example…

I’m an immersion player. I love being immersed in the world. I like PVe more than PvP, but I’ll play WvW sometimes, just to break stuff up. I’ve even done some PvP. So I looked for a guild that was PVe-centric, that did some WvW, but wasn’t elitist. Inclusive rather than exclusive. That was my personal requirement.

It also helps to have casual people who play for fun, not “to win”. We’ll get all the content done…I’m not in a rush. It’s fine.

That’s what I looked for, and yes, was lucky enough to find.

Anet promised you nothing. Deal with it.

Look, kid, clay’s been clear on what Anet “promised.” What about the current PvP setup is clay wrong to lament, especially given the statements Anet made about PvP?

Again define promise. I didn’t see like swearing or promising. I saw a company that specified they have an interative process and that things change, that said they intend to do some stuff. How that translates to a “promise” is beyond me.

So you’re saying everything ANet says has or will come true? Be careful how you answer this one.

I’m saying that they’ve kept FAR more promises than they’ve broken by percentage. Care to contest that?

So you admit that some promises have been broken or that perhaps some promises should be left broken in the future? So, there is a chance we will never see player housing?

Not at all. First of all, define promise. Look it up. Saying something in an interview doesn’t constitute a promise. First major lingustic fallacy right there.

As far as I know Anet didn’t promise anything. They didn’t guarantee there’s never be any vertical progression for example. They said what they saw as their vision for the game. Changing something doesn’t equal a broken promise, particularly in light of the companies very public view of iteration. How come you never look at all the times they talk about iteration. No, it’s just a broken promise to the close-minded.

I used the word promise because you did, but now that I think about it, I wasn’t really promised anything that I can see. Most of the stuff Anet said, even from five years ago, holds true today.

That’s a pretty good track record. You’re only kitten because the things you specifically wanted aren’t in the game, and so you’re using the word promise as you do everything else. To make things more dramatic. As hyperbole.

Anet promised you nothing. Deal with it.

And it’s my right to express my disappointment on the forums and to keep annoying you with my opinions as long as I don’t get banned.

Personally, if I were you, I would stop replying to my posts. You guys would probably be a lot happier and threads wouldn’t end up getting derailed.

Just let me have my opinion in peace without tying to tell me I’m wrong.

Like you say – easy peasy.

But your coming from a point of view that has no base to it. I looked i cant find you any where on the leader boards but with what your saying you should be there at least in spvp but your not so… PIC OR IT DID NOT HAPPEN.

What are you 12? My point of view had plenty of base to it, just noting you agree with or want to hear. Get over yourself man. This game just isn’t that good unless you’re a carebear or like to grind your face off for digital loot. Certainly there is very little intrinsic reward to this game as it relates to anything challenging.

If you find it so easy then you should show up that all unless your making your view on an incomplete pic flawed data that you “feel” is not. Yes your point of view is that of some one who saying “every thing some one else has done is easy because i did it too.”

Yes that is what I’m saying. I don’t find this game nearly as challenging and intrinsically rewarding as it’s predecessor. I’m sorry you don’t like that I feel that way and want to take it out on me. Perhaps you just don’t like that I think this game could be more challenging because you wouldn’t be able to play it then.

I truly think you have not done every thing is what i am getting at your point of view to call the game not challenging at any point if flawed.
Was GW1 hard when you could do any event with npc? Was it hard to work out near exploitation of combos until they nerfed it? I think your living in the past and nothing will be in your view as challenging as something you played in what i presume youth because you where YOUNGER then you are now so you where LEARNING a new way to play but now that you have some idea what is going on things SHOULD be easier.

I played HA and GvG. I imagine you didn’t. That is our difference. PvE content was much more challenging though as well.

I understand that but i think because it was the first time playing a game from Anet made it harder because you where learning it still. GW2 you can have GvG its a lot harder to set up but you can pull it off. That and in GW2 you must kill each person 2 times and if you die as a player you may “save” ppl on the other team. Also every person in GW2 can self heal some better then others but they still can. In effect every hero in GW2 is a full pt from GW1. Its the different between being just another grunt who can do one job vs a full team in one person who has high tech equipment that helps them do more.

Oh there’s a ghostly hero somewhere? And a flag stand? And good team combat? And… Oh that’s right, there’s no GvG.

Listing a bunch of game mechanics and saying they are better doesn’t mean they are.

But they ARE different and new for mmorpgs and mmorpgs from here on are the better for GW2 bring them to gaming. There is good team combat because there are true combos there IS GvG you just do not want to make player made event as being part of the game THEY ARE.

You make me laugh. So headstrong to make your point that you say there is GvG and sPvP is good and better than GW1. Do you honestly believe all that? The majority don’t. How do I know? Because GvG doesn’t exist and sPvP is all but dead.

The things people say…. Lol

Define all but dead? You have numbers? Didn’t think so.

Guild Missions
Fractals (dungeon which scales in difficulty to infinity)
A new zone
Living Story
Leaderboards
WvW ranks
Dungeon revamps
More jumping puzzles
Ascended gear
A couple PvP maps including CTF
Skritt burglar events
Upgraded loot from world drops & meta events
Flexible daily & monthly achievements
Tons of polish to existing content including dungeons
Tons of balancing to professions

Short answer…depends on who you ask.

There are still not any more armor skins, but there are more weapon skins. A lot of people run Fractals for money instead of farming the Cursed Shore. Others run CoF path 1 which can be done quickly and easily but gets dull fast.

Some people farm in Frostgorge Sound too.

why would you buy it with any kind of money?

Real life cash may be easier to come by than in-game gold for some.

Not only an infinite mining pick is useless because the normal ones are cheap but spending 10$ for pixels and pixels that aren’t even useful is kinda funny imo. Like not because its new YOU have to buy something as worthless…

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Some people collect bottle caps and match books. I wouldn’t but I also wouldn’t judge them. Some people collect Star Wars memorabilia and some of it costs a lot of money. Some people pay money to have fun in games.

For me, it’s more about not having to think about buying picks, not having to swap out to cheaper picks, not running out of picks when I’m in the middle of Orr that makes it worth it to me. It’s a quality of life upgrade. I don’t have to think about it.

I hope they introduce gathering sickles and axes in the future and I can just run around and not think about whether I need to buy more. It’s definitely worth it to me.

Agreed. Much of the game is designed for people who want to farm and grind or carebears who don’t care about a challenge. People who want challenging content or that like team PvP are pretty much kitten outta luck.

Yes who WANT to farm and grind but though who do not want to farm and grind can chose not to unlike every other mmorpg that was ever made. The challenging content is there but you do not want to do it. guild mission are very hard and you can fail them. There high level fractal that are very much fail able. There wvw content that has a challenges to it that never caps. Even in Spvp there is a challenge but its not been showed to you yet so you cant see it.

I don’t consider spamming skills on recharge against bosses with endless amounts of hit points challenging. Boring is more like it.

And I have a winning record in sPvP with over 20 games played. It’s pretty easy really and boring.

Also have enough badges of honor to know zerging is boring and unchallenging too.

Maybe you just aren’t good at the game if you think it is challenging?

Oh and fractals isn’t challenging. Agony might be the most boring mechanic ever added to a game to make it challenging lmfao.

Big fish small pond sounds like what your problem is. That or you just simply play a boring class and or that you find boring and comply unwilling to try ANYTHING new.

Lol I’ve played everything there is to play in this game. What am I missing that we don’t know about? Dungeons aren’t challenging. sPvP isn’t challenging. WvW isn’t changing. FoTM isn’t challenging. World bosses aren’t challenging. DE’s might actually be the best thing in this game but no one is around to do them, especially in higher level areas before Orr.

What did I miss? I’ve done all of that stuff. Once you know how to exploit the AI, play a bunker, and Zerg, I fail to see anything interesting or challenging in this game.

Like I said I think you’re problem is you’re just not good at the game which is why you think it is so hard.

So it’s not the game for you. Easy peasy. It is the game for others. Which is why you continually come off as negative about the game. You don’t realize that all you’re doing is expressing a personal prejudice because the game is not what you want or have envisioned.

And I can understand being disappointed in a game. But even when I was disappointed in a game, I didn’t go to the forums and continually bad mouth it, because it was obvious to me a lot of people really liked it.

Maybe you should just find another game?

I’m guessing (and this is just a guess) that personal housing and guild halls will be in the first paid expansion. And while Anet said they’re not currently working on an expansion, that doesn’t mean they haven’t started on parts of it already (which I also believe they have). They’re not actively pursuing now because they’re trying to get stuff out like the LFG tool, observer mode and custom arenas. As features are added, they’ll go back to working on the paid expansion.

I also don’t really expect them to launch the expansion until it’s strategic for them to do so from a marketing standpoint.

GW2 isn’t nearly as ambitious as GW1 was. That game actually tried to break the mold, and did quite successfully.

This game is just another MMO. For all it’s ambition, it’s really falling into the same path that every MMO is falling in to. And you use that to justify patience.

Let me just ask you – how many of those MMOs lived up to expectations and how many of them are considered failures today?

Actually, Guild Wars 2 did break a lot of MMO ground. The skills linked to weapons, whether you like it or not, is ground-breaking for an MMO. The cooperative style of PvE play including everyone being able to rez is pretty unique too. Downed state appears in no other MMO and cross profession combos I’ve not seen in an MMO either. Not to mention everyone having their own nodes and even the overflow servers.

Guild Wars 2 did well enough in doing something new that a lot of the new games coming out are copying them, and even some of the old games are copying Guild Wars 2.

Just because you don’t like what they’ve done doesn’t mean it’s not a quantum step forward in the MMO space.

Boring mechanics for carebears isn’t groundbreaking. It’s insulting.

And you didn’t answer my question at all.

So what ground did Guild Wars 1 break? And I did answer your question. These are areas where other MMOs suffered. You might not believe this, but there are a lot of people out there who hate MMOs generally. They really don’t like them. And at least some of those people like Guild Wars 2, though they don’t like other MMOs. So your concept of what an MMO should be, your opinion on what is boring mechanics for care bears, says the world about how much your opinion is worth, generally. Because care bears, as you so quaintly put it, make up a pretty big percentage of the MMO player base and we’re entitled to content too. So if Anet did nothing but make a better game for care bears they’ve changed the MMO space forever. Good for them.

And if all the guys who aren’t care bears went and played other games, I’m pretty sure the care bears wouldn’t miss them.

In any case, I’m not even sure why you’re worried about housing and guild halls if that’s what you really think.

I’m not. If you go back to the beginning I was attacked by Vayne as usual for saying that I doubt Player housing will happen any time soon because they haven’t even added guild halls yet.

I was happy to leave it at that. Then the fanboys started their belligerent protests that was should all be patient because the game that took 6 years to develop isn’t ready yet.

First, you didn’t say you doubted they’d be coming soon. The only way to read your post is that you doubt they were coming at all.

And since Anet said they were planning on them, you have no real basis to say that. If you want to consider that an attack, so be it.

But it’s again you offering an opinion without a shred of evidence to back it up. Particularly when you consider how long other games have taken to add housing.

I bought 3 with cash. I have lots of cash though, and this my hobby. No matter how I slice it, it’s far cheaper than golf.

There’s too much other stuff to do. Seriously though, this just goes back to the fact that you think it is ok to release a game in beta so a company can sell out it’s player base for their money ad I don’t think it is ok to release an unfinished game.

Get over it. I don’t care that you’re ok holdin on for years. I’m not. Neither, it seems, is the OP.

The point remains that not having housing is not seen as an incomplete game. You seem to forget that other games, even Guild Wars 1 added tons of stuff over the years. Does that mean it wasn’t complete at launch?

If you think ANY MMO ever is going to be complete at launch or even near complete, you might as well give up on them now.

GW1 was more complete at launch than this pile. And according to you they had a quarter of the staff and less time.

Guild Wars 2 wasn’t an MMO and it wasn’t this ambitious. It didn’t have near the level of content this game had. Comparing Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2 is like comparing a dog house to a building.

You didn’t have to worry about people straying off path, because the game was pathed. You didn’t have to worry about 50 people in the same event, because you could only have a maxium of 8 people Much easier to get the scaling down.

Guild Wars 1 launched with about 500 quests and 25 missions. Not 1500 events, and personal stories.

Prophecies launched with a single starting areas and one race, not five.

You couldn’t go into the water making the explorable area much larger.

You could finish ALL the content in Prophecies at launch is well under a month.

MMOs are far harder and far more expensive to produce. Compare if you like but even Anet said Guild Wars 1 wasn’t an MMO.

Yep, severely, just about given up on making my Bifrost, not only because of bad drops but i cannot find anyone wanting to do Arah runs to get the necessary tokens. I mean i spent a whole evening playing in CS last night, trying to find a group and not 1 lfg for Arah in all that time, nor did i get any response to mine.
I’ve spent most of my playtime in Frostgorge over the past few months but only began seriously farming for t6 mats in the last month or 2. i get an odd pce here and there, some more than others, but 3 i get virtually none of is elaborate totems, armored scales and crystalline dust.
I hate grawls due to their insane respawn rate….which is probably good for farming but i’m sick of the mobbing. I mean i kill one, his body is still falling down and another pops up right under him. But this is true also for bears there as well, but not as bad as grawls. So i kill maybe 50-60 grawls and i’ll be lucky to get 1 or 2 totems, sometimes none. its very frustrating to say the least and very time consuming for no results.

I wonder what happened to fun in gw2 that i used to feel in gw1 where i never felt unrewarded for my efforts?

Farm money, buy mats. Don’t try to farm specific mats, it’ll take you forever. That gives you more ways and places to farm, even events, which give you yellows, which can break down to ectos, which can be sold for mats.

Oh and paying lip service to players and not following through is also not something I think is good. Kinda like they said custom arenas were coming soon. In November.

Define soon? That’s your problem. You don’t have a definition. You’re making up your own. If I say I’m going to be making dinner soon, it wouldn’t be six months later. If I say I’m going to add these features to a program, soon takes on a different definition. You have an unrealistic expectation of what programmers can do and what amount of time they can do it it in. That’s not anyone’s problem but yours.

Clay, what part of building do you not get. They said they would be adding Guild Halls and player housing in a quote by Martin Kerstein. He didn’t say it would be soon. Rift added player housing after the game was more than a year old. Aion added player housing after the game was more than a couple of years old.

Just because they didn’t do it in the first nine months, doesn’t mean it won’t be done. I have an actual quote (no you can research it yourself) where Martin Kerstein said that both Guild Halls and Player housing will be in the game.

Where does your doubt come from?

I’ve got 6 level 80s and finished my personal story on 5 of them. I’ve gotten world complete on one character and I’m working on a second. I’ve got about half the jumping puzzles done and I’m only missing 3 paths of dungeons to get dungeon master. I also am closing in on my first legendary, should have it in a matter of weeks.

But there’s still plenty to do in the game for me.

Hmm, I’d be very surprised that people got banned for bugging out a boss in an instance. Let’s take the TA one.

Let’s say you bug out the final boss, who isn’t that tough anyway. But you still have to play through the entire dungeon to get to the final boss. It’s much faster to just to CoF path 1. So whos’ going to do that path over and over again and to what end.

From what I understand Anet isn’t going to ban someone for doing something once or twice.

I agree, I’d rather do the paths “honestly” rather than find tricks to do them, but I’ve still never heard of anyone being banned for doing that.

Why assume it will be a one-time event?

Haven’t they all been one time events? I mean, unless I want to wait till next year, and with my wonky playing schedule and burnouts of GW2, who knows.

Nope, you can still do all the stuff in Flame and Frost, even the stuff that came out three months ago.

I’ve never heard of anyone getting banned for standing on the tree, or skipping mobs? Do you have a quote for that. As far as I know there were three big waves of ban, from three different exploits, two of which affected the economy and the drinking one, which I said before I don’t think should have been a perma-ban. Maybe a 72 hour ban and a roll back.

Have people really been banned for bugging out bosses?

I guess, I just thought it’d be in everyone’s interest to add a new dungeon or some new kind of harder content, maybe 10 man dungeons or something, I’ve had a few friends quit already cause there’s not enough content, I mean I’m still sticking around doing my farming and fractals and I love gw2 for the gameplay and everything, I just feel like I’m doing the same thing over and over, but yeah you do have a valid point there crazy.

I agree…it would be in everyone’s interested. It still takes time to develop stuff. I’m sure they’re working on stuff too.
