Wait for bw3 to test the changes before saying the legend is “gutted.” If it feels weak while playing, it will be fixed, but you can’t know how it will work 100% without playing it.

I played mallyx extensively to know this is a huge hit. It was my favorite legend, and I clocked in 60 hours of revenant last weekend. EtD was that one skill that you wouldn’t use very often but when you did it was devastating. It literally had one role and it did that perfectly, and it was also the main flavor of the legend as well as the whole point of its design: “take condis, spread them back”.

It’s like removing quickness from shiro’s impossible odds, you now just have an upkeep that gives super speed. Wow, fun!

I am gonna be trying my absolute best to make the devs reconsider such huge change.

Mistward armor Rev exclusive?

While I highly doubt it since all skins are shared in the wardrobe, it would be pretty cool to see class specific armor.

To be honest I wish I could use mistward armor on reaper. Dat armor with dat greatsword. 11/10

The problem is that they are balanced around having 1 skill bar and not 2 for the right half of your bar. They are also not made with energy in mind and would need to be changed to work with revenant, but would muddy the purity of each legends skill set playstyle. I thought I had mentioned it before on one of the initial streams, but racial skills won’t be usable on revenant.

Pretty likely that is considered sorta like a racial skill, as you can’t access it in pvp, so I would rule that one out as well

Think about it this way. The Revenant’s core legends are all about being the purest form of their roles. Vantari heals and cleanses. That’s all it does. Mallyx will only do condi damage. ect.

Now the Revenant is unique in that it can (kinda) dual spec between two different roles. You can tank and heal if you run Jarlis and Ventari with Nomad gear. That can be very powerful and it is the main reason it feels like a jack of all trades class.

Since the Revenant can switch between their legends and weapons so easily it is able to switch between two different rolls at the drop of a hat while the other professions can’t. That, to me, makes them unique.

yup. also the dev really make a great job in balance, since the Revenant is almost really good in every aspect but it’s not stepping on the other profession’s same role, just complements it (so actually you won’t swap a guardian for a rev, but you want them both)

They’re also pretty well balanced in a sense that if they decide to specialize in something, they will be lacking something else. A shiro/glint rev is gonna be pretty good for damage, but as many pointed out it will lack condition cleanses. In my case I run mallyx/glint so conditions are literally never a problem, but I lack chasing potential to finish off enemies. Or a jalis/ventari rev is likely to miss damage, etc.

Every class has some skills that can’t be used underwater.

They need to have them all. Underwater you have the same legends as on land. Imagine any sort of fight where you get chased underwater (in wvw mainly) if you had ventari slotted, you’d literally lose half of your skills. Other classes can slot different skills for underwater, revenant cannot. This is hugely balance breaking. They need to have access to absolutely all their skills underwater in one way or another.

I guess I should thank everyone involved in the making of Revenant as well, cause I just found my perfect class. Definitely gonna main it anywhere pvp is concerned, second main for pve after reaper, even might end up beating reaper to it honestly

Revenant Rune

The key features of revenant is the control of the mists and its energy bar.

If they did anything it would likely be:

1. faster legend swapping, maybe with a trigger effect or on hit effect
2. lowers energy costs on skills (fixed or %)
3. lowers upkeep energy consumption by 1-2(energy bar not per skill), it would not increase your recharge rate. If you had fury facet on, its like its only 1 upkeep, or swiftness is 0 upkeep.
– This would let you have glint elite on (upkeep 5) and still recharge energy bar slowly or add swiftness/healing without consuming your energy bar. It would effectively allow you to keep your skills going a little bit longer.

Roy specifically mentioned not having traits that affect energy directly; why would they make a rune that does this? It would just become mandatory for the Revenant.

This, as well as being completely useless for all other classes.
I CAN see something along the lines of resistance on heal or stuff like that, there’s never overly complicated stuff on runes.

Only classes who can’t use this are engies and warriors. So I wouldn’t count it as being “pretty class specific”

Guardian – Spirit Weapons could work technically I suppose, but there are better options for a Spirit Weapons build and there are better options than a Spirit Weapons build.

Thief – Thieves’ Guild has what, 150 seconds of downtime? Pretty much a wasted rune set for them.

Ele – I guess this could kinda work if you used the elemental as your elite, but there are much better options here as well.

Mesmer – I could maybe see this working on Mesmer, at least, I’ll give ya that.

Necro – It’d be okay on a minion master build, I guess. Same principle applies here as it does to Guardian though.

Rune of the Ranger really is specifically tailored to rangers, even if it’s not necessarily exclusively for them. I could see them doing something related to legend swap, and maybe having it work for Ele’s attunement swap or Ranger’s pet swap or something. But it’d definitely be something made with Revenant in mind.

If anything the most class specific rune so far is the necromancer, since off the top of my head the only other class with fear is warrior (and in extremely situational cases a ranger and thief)

Revenants do not exist before Rytlock, they simply dont have a personal story for revenants so they share it with the others. The events of the personal story and season 1 unfold no matter what class you play. Same way as they never acknowledge your class in the story. Lore wise, the pact commander may as well be an Asura necromancer as it culd be a Sylvari elementalist, and Rytlock is the first Revenant, as he invented/developed the profession.

Balance on glint

I honestly think Glint is too strong. Having no energy consumption even on actives is just not right imo. There needs to be some. Energy is never an issue with glint, and I dont think that sits well with the rest of how the class works. You should be punished if you dont manage your energy well with Revenant and with Glint this never happens. The heal is also too strong, it needs either a better tell or a cast time.
I also seem to be the only who dislikes the Herald traits. No matter what build I make if I take herald I always end up using the same traits. Something’s really off here. Shield also isn’t great, at all.

TL;DR: Glint is TOO strong. Herald and shield, not so much.

excuse me do you play Warrior? if not then allow me to educate you about an extremely worthless heal called Defiant stance. Defiant stance is just like infused light except it is a hated and UN used ability generally regarded as the worst warrior heal especially in pvp. why? well because defiant stance has a cast time and as a result is almost totally impractical to use. its a stance that’s for some ungodly reason is made vulnerable to interrupts by having a cast time. the tell on the skill alone makes it EXTREMELY EASY to counter and once its up just stop attacking and watch the warrior flounder helplessly with out a heal. so no Infused light does not need a cast time that would literally ruin the skill.

The problem with warriors is not that their heals are bad, it’s that healing signet is, pretty much as the rest of the class, as brainless as it can be. Ugh, please dont compare revenants to warriors.

Strength or Scholar runes for power reaper?

Power necro should always go for scholar. Your death shroud will shield your health so you can keep it at 100%. Even in Verdan Brink I had no issues keeping myself over 90% with reaper.

Revenant is Too Weak to Condis

People should try Mallyx/Glint over Shiro/Glint more. The great thing about Mallyx is that it isn’t purely for condition management. While providing that sweet Resistance, Mallyx offers some great utility:
1. AoE cleanse for allies
2. Spammable boon rip of 2 boons
3. Displacement field for anti-stomping
And, it’s good to have a bursty heal to pair with Glint, instead of having 2 gimmick heals (having to hit / having to get hit). Also, EtD boosts stats by 10%, which I find great in Cele builds

I find it worth being a bit more slow, than having to run in the opposite direction when encountering a condi class. I’m OK with having perma swiftness and axe teleport as mobility.

This. I keep telling people, you absolutely don’t need shiro AT ALL in pvp. I can understand people using it in wvw for chasing, but for pvp? A shiro Revenant is a free kill. Mallyx is by far the strongest legend, outside of glint but honestly that one’s pretty op to begin with.
The beauty of revenants is that you dont need to take shiro to do amazing damage and people seem to fail to see this. Glint is gonna give you amazing defense against physical damage, while mallyx is gonna give you near immunity to condi builds. Just go ham on them meanwhile, you pretty much counter both types of builds with those two legends, they’ll eventually die because you have better healing as well.
Honestly the only class that gave me any issues at all was DD ele with diamond skin, his health would literally not go down. At all.

Torment Runes for my Mallyx Revenant

I really like Anti-toxin for Malyx.

The -Condi duration is super helpful for all the self condis you apply as well as what everyone else applies on you. It gives a nice -24% amount which is enough to bring all your self condis below the Demonic Resistance duration. This means you can use the Leap with really no negative side effects.

In addition, you’re constantly applying Torment to yourself with the Elite meaning you’ll always get the net boost of the 5 might stacks on incoming Torment/Poison (10s duration, 20s cool down allowing us to at least tap our Elite for might). This makes the runes effectively 183 Condi damage plus the 5 Might stacks (50% up time) at 258 Condi damage on average.

That is a great idea Kodiak!

Oh yeah he’s right, that’s quite a neat idea. I myself was wondering how Sunless runes would play out, having fear on embrace the darkness was thematically awesome but I guess 5 stacks of might are more useful!

The only things Roy has outright “sure sugar have it your way” ‘d have been weapon swap, which was already been thoroughly discussed internally, and the dodge roll animation which was pretty much a simple cosmetic change.

Shiro is basically useless if you have a guardian or a mesmer who can provide quickness. Maybe the heal is some extra damage but that’s it, impossible odds is just too costly to be spammed, I don’t feel like it’s something you can rely on. And I just read somewhere you cast enchanted daggers and then swap shiro for something else so…yeah.

Spent most of the last beta weekend on revenant, plus a couple extra days I managed to stay logged in on revenant(seriously why is this a thing? not complaining cause I got some extra hours out of it but still).

Overall I feel revenant is in a very good spot now, but only because of Glint. Glint is way, WAY too mandatory for Revenant. I fear for future elite specs not being able to give anything worthwile. Besides that I think Revenant needs some changes to certain skills that throw balance off the window (both buffs and nerfs).

First and foremost, the Glint heal NEEDS a bigger tell. That, or a cast time. I love getting spiked and healing back to full health, but that’s really not fair for the enemy if all they can see in such a high speed paced combat is a buff on my health bar. This needs a bright aura on the revenant for the duration. Adding a cast time would be an option (short enough to still be a fast “oh kitten” button, but you shouldn’t be able to use this while stunned).

As many pointed out, the shield needs work. Every time I encountered a fellow revenant in wvw and they used crystal hibernation I thought “great, free kill” and that should NOT be the case. Skill 4 seems lackluster and honestly I didn’t even bother using shiled at all, anywhere. Same for offhand sword, although I can see the appeal of the block, sword 5 is clunky.

Even though I was going for power based builds, I kept using mace over sword because sword is just not pve friendly. Very often would your UA cancel early because of collisions with any wall or nearby object, and having a projectile on sword auto that loses its comeback damage because of walls sucks too. I haven’t used sword 2 a single time, something about this skill just doesn’t feel right.

For the legends themselves, I’ll try to point out the stuff that hasn’t been said before. Mallyx imo is perfect, Jalis needs a fix on those hammers’ collision and that’s about it (although reduced energy on the taunt would be nice). Now the big stuff:

Glint, other than the healing skill I mentioned earlier, is pretty much spot on, although I’ve found myself having trouble using Gaze the Darkness. It just didn’t seem to work most of the time. Both on players and in PvE. Tried using it against Mossman and it just did nothing to him, he would stay on stealth even with the revealed debuff. Also, all the facets share the same “clock”, they all tick at the same time. I tried activating them with a 1s interval so I would benefit from the trait that gives might when you give a boon to alies but they eventually seemed to synchronize and pulse at the same time, making this trait essentially a stack of might every 3 seconds, which isn’t great at all.

Shiro: I know many love this one but I’m not a particularly big fan. Impossible odds is way, WAY too costly for what it does. It’s not just that -10 upkeep is insane, but having 10 energy on activation as well is just nuts. This needs a cost reduction. Phase traversal is potentially balance breaking. This skill alone makes the revenant the most mobile class in the game and honestly I don’t know how to fix this, but going back to how it was before is not an option. Now, Jade winds; this skill is way too strong. There is NO reason why this skill’s stun should be longer than the Reaper’s Chilled to the Bone. The reaper’s shout has an insane CD and also longer cast time. Sure it applies chill, but you can still cast Jade winds about 10 times in the time a reaper can cast CttB again.

Ventari IMO is alright. Could use some mechanic changes but those have already been covered up by other people.

Finally, Revenant needs a huge revision on its traits. Some are outright useless, while others are so powerful they don’t belong to the tiers they’re in. Demonic defiance should be a grandmaster, and venom enhancement needs to go. The Herald line is probably the most underwhelming of them all (honestly the only reason I took herald was to gain access to Glint, never cared about the traits or the shield skills), and devastation just has no options, you will always be taking the ferocity traits, hands down. Salvation needs variety in its traits, I get they wanted a healer line, but it should be usable with other legends and weapons other than the ones intended to. Some traits also need to move around lines, Dismantle fortifications fits more in the corruption or retribution line, same goes for Enhanced Bulwark.

Runes of Radiance affect eles almost exclusively.

I’m pretty sure they were meant to trigger with light aura from guardians as well, since they were introduced at the same time

I’m so in love with Mallyx, might be because of the amazing animation of Embrace the Darkness: especially on charr is like your toon is going nuts and then proceed to release a burst or evil, darkness energy. SO AMAZING.

Anyway, since rev is the jack of the heavies like engi and ele, i’ll try them all.
Cant wait to be a DPS/Support in PvE, CondiBunker in PvP and Bunker/support commaning in WvW

Here’s what I’ve been running the past beta both in wvw, pvp and pve (didn’t want to bother much changing builds often and this worked well for all three modes):

Assassin’s anihilation will give you good sustain and damage even when using mace as a power weapon, as well as the might stacking providing even more damage. Mace 3 hits pretty hard in zerker gear actually. I had a really hard time dying in 1v1s. In fact I think the ONLY person who gave me trouble was a DD ele with diamond skin as banish enchantment would just not work on him. Basically your gear provides more than enough damage, while your legends work amazingly for defense. Glint completely wrecks any power based build, with blinds, weakness, and protection. The moment you have to face against a condi build, just switch to Mallyx. Not only do you have access to the two best heals the class has, but you’ll be doing very high damage at range, a bit lower in melee, but the torment really makes up for it even without condi dmg, while the lifesteal damage slowly withers tanky builds down as it ignores toughness. Use legend swap to trigger Geo/Hydromancy sigils for a good burst every 10 seconds, great to finish off people when jumping at them with mace 3 or axe 4!

I’d guess that the 4th bonus will be on Heal and the 6th bonus on Legend swap.

Boring but versatile regardless of which Legend you’re using.

The # 4 is a good suggestion. #6 is too specific to the Revenant. My guess is it’ll be an elite skill use effect since we have two of them. Maybe Fury upon use of an elite skill; +5% damage when under the effect of Fury.

They could make it “on legend/weapon swap”. That way it would still be useful for other professions and attunement/kit swapping functions like weapon swapping, so it would work for Eles and Engis too.

On weapon swap effects are typically placed on sigils, not runes. Runes usually have on heal or on elite effects. We’ll have to see, but considering how many heals and elites revenants have, some odd rune choices might have interesting place now. For example, rune of the sunless is quite a good choice for a condi Mallyx spec, as it reduces all the conditions you absorb, as well as give you a fear whenever you use Embrace the Darkness, which revenants have no access to.

Starting Legendary

The revenant choices while character creating are which kind of blindfold they are going to wear. I think the only class that can chose something not cosmetic related is ranger chosing their pets. Jalis is indeed confirmed to be the starting legend, also on the training tab he’s the only one lacking a heal skill to be trained as that’s the skill you’re going to start with.

Revenant lifesteal can kill Jade Maw

While I find it thematically awesome that Revenants being the masters of the mists can wreck the infamous fractal boss, it’s very problematic since if you kill Maw before the colossus phase ends it will bug out and prevent progress for your entire party. This is a HUGE bug that was reported back in the first beta and I think should be fixed asap. Simply having a trait (assassin’s anihilation) is enough for any revenant to kill Jade Maw, or using hammer’s dark field with its auto, or shiro’s heal. Or all of the above at the same time with impossible odds.
I unfortunately screwed up my party by doing this sooner than I should (I knew it worked after colossus phase but someone in my party lowered it too much with crystals).

I am aware this can be done with other classes as well, but with revenant it seems way too easy to even pull off accidentally since it has such readily avaliable access to lifesteal.

I haven’t played thief yet, but want to try out Daredevil.

We work very hard to synchronize as many things as possible, but beta weekend events are best organized around the times that our development team will be able to devote as many hours as possible to testing, in-game observations, forum tracking, feedback reviews, and even possible on-the-fly changes. (The latter is not likely, but it has been known to happen.)

In no way do we want anyone to feel distanced by the hours chosen, and we do apologize if the hours are somewhat inconvenient for someone (although with a test that runs for a couple of days, surely not all hours will prove to be inaccessible ). For practical purposes, the hours selected are the best possible for the team developing this game for you, and we ask for your understanding of that fact.

I wonder though, don’t you guys have weekends off? I am kinda worried about the expansion releasing on a Friday, because if there is any critical stuff that needs fixing asap, a weekend sounds like a time where patching stuff isn’t as easy.

I like the Glint skills, but the shield is pretty lackluster IMO, and so are the traits. They have almost no synergy with anything other than the Herald itself. Honestly, a lot of the Revenant traits need to be looked at still

Possibly. I was the recipient of the damage, and didn’t have access to the build; it did seem to be something like that.

So how is the meta thief superior to someone hitting for 16k-21k in one hit?

Personally, I like using marauders DA CS Trick DP thief but even with that i tend to max out with a 11k BS so…

A meta thief is superior to one that hits 16~21k in the following ways (please keep in mind that im guessing at the 16~21k build x3);

1. Using berserkers instead of marauders
2. Probably using some form of the signet might build. More extreme versions of this does not have shadow step… or shadow refuge… or even withdraw (uses signet heal) and has 1 stun break that they probably use to feed their burst anyways (ini signet).
3. Instead of SA they probably use CS (so a DA CS Trick build) so no healing in stealth, no condi clear at all

so to get a 21k backstab, the thief will basically… have no heal, 0 stunbreaks, 0 condi clears, no stealth bonuses, no utilities (all fed into getting might), and will have just enough ini after the 21k burst to do bp -> hs 1 more time before becoming useless and probably dead :P

The meta build will burst less but more often, won’t die nearly as easily, has much more utility and can act like a res bot if needed.

Well now compare that to current mesmer builds. Which have tons of burst, stealth, a whole bunch of stun breaks, a pretty decent heal (asuming ether feast) which they can use while in stealth for basicaly no possible interrupt, and a whole bunch of boons while in stealth to help them sustain the fight if anything goes wrong.

Finer points aside, any class setup that allows you to FullHP -> Death a class without a telegraph is overpowered, plain and simple.

I don’t know why there are paragraphs being written elsewhere defending the above specifically.

An untelegraphed (close-to)instakill is unpleasant to fight, unfair to the recipient and cannot be planned for. It’s just as passive as turret engie and, ironically, is an embellished version of what many mesmers blamed as being unpleasant and unfair to fight.

wins should be the reward of prediction, skillful play and strategy. A class that can simply erase HP bars without at least making its presence known long enough for its opponent to react needs fixing, period.

If you are dead, they are shatter burst mesmers using PU.
If you are not dead, they are condi mesmers, so you’ll die soon. Oh, forgot to mention, they are also using PU.
Because frig, that stuff is broken and they need to fix that perma stealth bs already

If elly is nerfed hard it is you all to blame. I have read thread after thread of ellys calling for elly nerfs.

I have never seen a group of people playing the same class bandwagon together asking to nerf that class as you people have done.

If anything this shows how broken the state of the ele is right now. There’s a lot of people who, when in an advantadge, don’t want to lose that position, and get annoyed when balancing hits their class. However good players must know what is good for the game and should, imo, prefer a fair fight. I mean, yeah, you feel awesome when winning, but when it’s not by your own merits? I’m sure many would prefer a balanced class with more even fights.

I’m of two minds about the skill. Testing it in Pvp, it seemed to be up whenever I needed it (mostly because my go to CC was RS 5).

But the cooldown is still too long to take.

A kitteny elite on a 60 second cooldown is still better than the current version, which is completely removed by, say, a shoutbow’s “shake it off.”

Anet nerf it however you want, but get the cooldown down to something we can use.

Quoting yourself on this “it seemed to be up whenever I needed it” contradicts your final statement.
Honestly I think people are in the wrong mindset thinking all skills need to be spammable. This skill isn’t supposed to be. Yes, maybe the 120 CD is a bit excessive but there’s NO way they would bring it down to 60. It’s an elite skill, it should be a game changer. The problem is not that this skill has a long CD, the problem is that other classes have broken elites that can be used multiple times in a single fight, like warrior’s rampage, or (despite how much I like Revenant) Jade Winds.

When PvP/roaming, unless you are using a full DPS build, you want to use AA. Revenant has high base hp so you can run full berserker without this extra sustain. For all the other builds, AA gives awesome sustain and extra damage that pierces toughness. For PvE and large scale WvW, where more damage is better or you cant keep the pressure into an enemy in order to profit AA, Swift Termination is better.

Actually, in large scale wvw, (assuming you’re using ranged hammer) it’s very easy to trigger AA, it’s amazing sustain and sustained damage. We’re talking healing signet’s levels of healing here

Hammer AA pierces, forgot about this, my bad… In that case its also pretty easy to trigger AA, in fact the 1s icd is the same than the 1s cast of AA hammer, and its likely you will always trigger the trait, you are right :p

There is a strong possibility.

I love my elementalist and the Tempest seems like it’d work well with a staff, which is my favorite ele weapon. My ele has been shelved for a quite a while because of how dominant daggers are in the ele meta and how hard it is to be a long ranged nuker, which is what I rolled it for way back when this game launched.

I love both my rangers and will likely continue to play them a lot, but you can only go so far with a ranger main currently due to the profession’s limits. Maybe druid will spice it up a bit.

But revanant is a thematic revival of my main from Guild Wars 1 the ritualist, and I absolutely loved everything about that profession. Even if it mechanically plays different the lore and themes are the same. If the revanant really resonates with me in terms of playstyle it may well become my main.

If you like long range nuker playstyle revenant is perfect for you! Go full zerker and your hammer will hit like a truck

Interesting, I’m actually on the oposite situation. I so want to main Reaper for dungeons and fractals but I loved Revenant for WvW

Ups, my bad. I’ve just checked classic GW2 build editor page and there is no elite spec for Revenant added yet.

They only added the elite specs that were playable in the first beta and Herald was announced right after said beta. It will be playable the next weekend.

I personally think that Shiro skill effects are poor. Im not a fan of dark green at all. I wish his theme was red/orange or simply purple like in gw trailer.

That said which other legend offers low energy stunbreak that also evades and provide endurance, decent gap closer to stick to your target, and 3 sec long aoe stun?

Mallyx? People can cc you 100-0 if you are in Mallyx.

Right now outside of poor healing ability, Shiro feels the most complete. And after all hes useful in both condi and power builds. Revenant has basically 0 mobility outside of Shiro.

Yeah and mallyx has a leap which creates a displace field, a skill that basically makes you completely immune to condis, an elite that increases all your stats by a pretty decent ammount without an absurd energy cost, unlike impossible odds, and the strongest heal the revenant has. Oh and boon removal, although admitedly I dont use that one often
Also, I don’t like stun breaks that move you out of your position which is why I dislike shiro mostly

100% agree with this. I do like the idea of increased CD ONLY if it kills a downed player. It’s a single target attack anyway (contrary to what it may look like). It gives a choice between do I want to down this guy under 25% health with a big hit or save it for when he’s down and get him out of the way.

I mean we are THE Reaper after all, I think it’s fitting!
