5v5 team survivor/bomb mode ala counter-strike. Please. I love what we have now but sometimes I just want to kill people. Sometimes I want to run builds that are build FOR the killing of people, with allies, instead of needing everything to relate in some way to points and bunkers. Others make the argument for TDM but that turns into a tacticless zerg clusterkitten like you see in most hotjoins. Survivor is tactical. You have to manage your allies, you have to manage you own life. It’s also tense. Ever been the last alive and pulled off a sick 1v3? It also leads to neat teamfights, especially in the initial rush. The point behind Bomb is to prevent stalemates and add direction.

Solo queue/everything else queue split because I do not enjoy solo queuing and going up against a team that has an insane advantage in terms of teamwork and composition.

Three Reasons GW2 Will Never be an E-Sport

in PvP

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

  1. Leavers being allowed at all in tournaments, the “hardcore pvp” option.
  2. No rating system at all besides leaderboards (useless), and glory (can get through casual pvp).
  3. downing 3 people, then having them all rally off of a single kill, the biggest failing of this pvp system.

Sorry, but GW2’s dreams as an e-sport are long gone. Maybe we’ll have better luck with TES:O

1. Yes so much. Other “comp” games have this – example, leaving a Dota 2 match and not rejoining in a set time will put you in Low Priority queue. And trust me, you do not want to be in Low Priority.
2. Leaderboards are pretty good imo, I just wish they’d go forever (or at least for 20k or so) and show actual MMR so you know how much you need to improve. There needs to be some kind of occasional major tournament that gives unique prizes for winners. Imagine a yearly one that gives a legendary. That would be nice.
3. I don’t like the concept of downed state but I’ve learned to deal with it. Besides, it leads to “plays” and “plays” are what people watch.

The two biggest things holding back this game as a “compeditive” esport imo are -lack of custom servers (how will you organize leagues, inhouses, scrims, all that jazz if you can’t do something as simple as start a server?) and -lack of spectator mode (should be pretty self explanatory, any streams will only be from one PoV). If they fix those two things along with leaderboards then they’ll be on the right track, but it’s definitely too little too late.

Hammers for Ranger

in Ranger

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

Actually, for a “Ranger” or rather, an archer, it would be quite natural to use a hammer.

Back in the g’old days, british longbow men were given battlehammers to counter the well armored french armies, which wore thick metal armors.

“Ranger” =/= exclusive use of range weapons in this case. More like a wilderness ranger than an archer. Pop culture example: Aragorn is a ranger, because that is his occupation – a ranger of the north. He ranges around numenor’s ruins. Legolas may or may not be a ranger, but he wouldn’t be a ranger specifically due to being good with ranged weapons.

I have no problem with ranger getting more melee weapons, although the hammer as the op is describing it seems borderline OP.

Nature's Wrath - Ranger burst vid

in Ranger

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

Several encounters which were cut away from. It’s a burst montage rather than a show of robust builds. He has no stun breaker so the moment he gets caught on a stun with a zerg he’s screwed. Same if he came across any thief that can land a mug/daze into basilisk. He had around 16k hp, probably very little toughness so after he blew signet of stone he could be bursted down in one sequence by a mesmer or thief.

The big burst buttons as well were long cooldowns like signet of the wild, and most of his opponents didn’t even dodge maul, which has a blatant animation before it lands.

What happens when the d/d ele mist forms/armor of eath through his signet cooldowns? He dies after.

Well ain’t you a ray of sunshine.

Why are you so defensive?

Hehe, I think you’re the one being defensive. You act like someone disagreed with your on the internet or something…

But you did come off pretty negative. You came in with a chip on your shoulder and took it upon yourself to ‘explain’ what people are seeing. Did you ask the OP about the build? Why he made the choices he did or the edits in the vid? Nah, you did something else though.

As far as bursts go, it looks pretty effective while not requiring too much set up. I like it. I think comparatively though, it’s no mesmer shatter in terms of AoE. But maybe this’ll be Ranger’s turning point, where people quit the pity party and do some amazing stuff instead.

He may be being negative but that is not mutually exclusive to being a realist. As soon as someone reacts to the burst he’s dead. Notice that several clips were shut off before the finish? It certainly is good damage, you wouldn’t be lying, but damage certainly isn’t everything.

That being said, this is definitely a strong build for ganking poor/unattentive players, but every class has some full zerkers based build that can get similar results like d/d glass thieves, 100b wars, 100 nades (rip) or static discharge engis, hell I’ve even seen full zerkers guardians who rely on the element of surprise with judge’s intervention and unscathed contender.

Greatsword throw while moving

in Ranger

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

They could also increase the range of the throw, so it has a higher chance of hitting. Or just remove the activation time, so it’s an instant cast.

The range and projectile speed and duration of the cripple itself are also very horrid, and in a perfect world I’d like to see all of those increased but the skill itself is borderline impossible to use right now even if I wanted to because of the huge delay wherin you can’t move. It’s extremely situational because of the range and movement lock, you’re only going to cripple someone heading perpendicular or towards you – rare – and someone running away from you has to be practically close enough to hit with melee anyway because of the cast time and projectile speed/range, and by the time you catch up to them again the cripple is over. It’s a good concept that I can adapt a skill like that but it’s really completely killed by the lack of mobility in the animation.

I’d also like to take this moment to point out that the Counterattack kick animation upon a block wherin you swing around your greatsword is pretty much the best thing ever.

Greatsword throw while moving

in Ranger

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

Good work on the greatsword buff, it’s starting to get a lot more useable now that maul is actually worth the attack time but there’s something that’s always felt clunky to me: if you press GS 4 to use Counterattack and then press GS 4 again, you throw the sword for a cripple on your target if it hits. It’s great that you can be versatile and switch your game on the fly like this but it’s really held back by the fact that you’re rooted during the animation. This, combined with the short range and really short cripple duration means that if you’re chasing someone and want to cripple them by doing that then 90% of the time they’ll just outrun it. Other similar skills on other classes can be used while moving, what’s more counterattack itself can be used while moving but the greatsword throw can’t.

This would be a subtle buff to a weapon that really needs it that isn’t just more damage or anything, merely more versatility. It also feels extremely clunky.

TLDR: let rangers use gs 4’s secondary skill while moving

What's the breakdown on Ascended gear?

Respect meeting “the pro”. Something others around should pay.
Old school i guess, looking your answer. Your post is the typical attitude nowadays, don’t worry. New generation forgot the meaning of the word respect about everything, let’s not mention respect a pro walking near you on an mmo.

I hope you’re being ironic. I really do.

Nothing “pro” about grinding. Ascended, legendary, nothing there takes skill – all patience. There’s no “bar” you have to reach, you just do things for a long time.

Arah gear gets some respect, maybe. They have to have done Lupi/Arah which is not easy. WvW uniques get respect from me because it means they must have actually been able to kill people (too many badges to JP farm). Legendaries? Nah. Ascended? Sure is hard up in fotm 10.

What's the breakdown on Ascended gear?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

Not much. IE:

Exotics vs Ascended zerkers accessories:

Bonus of a little power. About 5 or 10 or so. Makes you hit just a teensy bit harder.

Bonus of 5 precision: 5 precision is just under what is required to raise your crit chance by 1% at 80. Barely anything. Might tip you over the edge if you’ve got the right amount of precision but 1% is hardly going to win you a fight you couldn’t win before and it’s not going to finish a dungeon any tangible amount quicker either.

Crit damage increase of 1%. I’ll leave you to mull that over, it’s not exactly unwelcome but I wouldn’t call it a game changer either: if I were to hit for 1000 then a crit would have 10 extra damage on it.

In my opinion: Not worth the effort if you don’t want to do it, but if you want to stay competitive stats-wise and think a little bonus like that (times 6, mind, because there are 6 ascended slots currently – it adds up) is required, then go for it. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother.

More is coming though, and when we’ve got a full set we’re kind of looking at a rare>exo bonus at that point.

I personally think that in this game, at least a lot, skill>stats by a fair amount. WoW players and Anet apparently didn’t, so ascended was introduced.

As far as I know, it only takes off one charge per skill “use”. As in, whirling blade will do one.

What I do know is that if he has no stacks of defiant, you can fear him through the shield (at least using Fear Me). While feared he moves at double speed, giving you ~40 seconds to take down shield stacks while he walks back. Guardian obviously has no sources of Fear so the best you can try and do is to try find some kind of consumable that fears, take down his defiant stacks, fear him when the shield comes up, and then just autoattack. Scepter autoattack is probably the fastest here, strangely enough.

The new AC...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Writetyper.1985

Writetyper.1985

I love all the claims of this being the first dungeon most people will do. Correct me if I’m wrong but the changes are AC EXPLORABLE not AC STORY MODE which is the topic of the message everyone gets at 30. Explorable modes were always harder and for more experienced players, because they’re all about the farming and the grinding for completion instead of, you know, story mode.

And I’m sorry that you can’t faceroll through the dungeon with zero skill for muh grinding anymore, but if you’re literally in the game to have no fun and just grind cash then you’ve always got TP flipping, CoF farming, or Orr farming – which I do from time to time when I need money. Some of us enjoy challenges that require us to play with hands on the keyboard instead of merely rolling our faces about on the keyboard for a while and seeing money pop out at the end.

It’s like you hate fun. I mean really, you may as well just go play Farmville because that’s the same deal: no risk, full reward. Patience over skill.

And they keep removing them.

How about we leave the single best boss in the game as-is? That would be nice. I don’t want more tank n spank facerollers.

If you’re having trouble, there are plenty of ways you can work around it. First off, run a bunker set if you can’t run your zerker set, it’s a lot more leniant, especially with stuff like the bubble. Second off, vigour. Vigour vigour vigour. Some classes don’t have easy constant access to vigour (necros, warriors) but in this case they have workarounds (death shroud, signet of agility/greatsword 3). If you still can’t dodge everything switch out your damage utils for some damage mitigation, endure pain, elixir S, mist form, because hell, getting it done in a long timeframe is better than not getting it done at all. Res abilities really help for obvious reasons – elixir R, warbanner, shadow refuge – good for when people inevitably go down. Stability is another good one to have for the bubble. Note that if you’re about to die and lupi is not targetting you, you can walk to the edge of the arena and provided someone is fighting him, you can break combat (and hence heal up) and lupi will not reset.

Most importantly, watch his attacks. Everything has some kind of windup or warning.

And this is a pretty good thing. Thieves in pve have one “real” role outside of being a sub-par warrior (less health, slightly less overall damage) and that’s stealth. While shadow refuge was good here and there for safe rezzing, the fact that EVERYONE could use stealth because of spy kits kind of made them redundant. I get a kick out of doing arah. It’s difficult. It’s got Lupicus. It’s (generally, there are obvious exceptions) got good and original thinking behind encounters and bosses. It has fights in which warriors and guardians ARENT the be all and end all because it encourages utility over DPS far more than any other dungeon. It has Lupicus. It looks AMAZING. It’s atmospheric. It’s got Lupicus It’s really atmospheric, feels like you’re an ant in a beehive, enemy territory. It’s got a pretty decent storyline for an explorable dungeon. Also it has Lupicus.

Path 2 is my favourite. The trash is actually fun to fight. You gotta use teamwork, you gotta use smarts. It’s not just facerolling through because the mobs do nothing back except for negligible damage.

There are a lot of things the devs have done wrong with this game, especially in regard to dungeons, but Arah is one thing they have done (generally) right.

MF is kitten as a concept but am I missing the memo where dungeons were hard or something? If the whole point of dungeons for most people is to make money… why not make money then?

Because without any way to know how much MF everyone has you end up with situations were 1 player is running tonnes of it and everyone else is suffering because of it, low DPS/Survivability. So most of the team is supporting 1 person that is making more out of it. If it showed as a buff at least you could at least advertise. AC 25MF run, so everyone gets an equal share of the loot, rather than one person being carried and getting more loot.

But they’re not getting carried because because if you play with fingers on the mouse instead of toes then you could do dungeons naked and finish in due course. It might take longer, but so will putting a ranger into your group, so will having someone with full soldiers, so forth.

I don’t use any mf because I don’t care about money, but that’s food for thought. Any lost time in a party wherin everyone is using mf might be made up through dosh. It’s certainly not like 5 PRECISION, which is less than 1/4th of what it takes to up your critical chance by ONE PERCENT is going to speed things up much at all.

As much as I would like this it’s probably never going to happen because of three main reasons:

A) Anet (and it seems, mmos in general) seem to avoid rewarding skill instead of patience
B) The portion of the community who actually strives for challenge and doesn’t find these things easy instead of just being a mindless farm drone is pretty small, and content designed for a small amount of players is not profitable
C) If it has any kind of reward people will try it and complain that content is being locked away. Hell, even if it has no reward this will still happen.

For now, we’ll just have to restrain ourselves to putting our own restraints on dungeons. 3-manning dungeons is much funner – it feels like how dungeons were designed to be, it’s less of a clusterkitten because everything you do is more important – except for the huge health bars.

Oh that’s one more thing – if we do get a “hard mode” it won’t actually be hard at all, everything will just be normal mobs with 200 times the HP because anet seem to think that taking longer on something = harder. No. It’s not hard, and it’s not fun.

Highlight POI’s on the map when you have all but 3 of them in terms of zone completion. Anyone who has gone for map completion knows what I’m talking about.

I’m torn between my main, a charr warrior, a class which I know the ins and outs of, or a Mesmer because they’re just so much fun. Thank god we don’t have to make this choice.

Is there a true aggro formula?

Most creeps seem to have different agro patterns, and some even have different ones on different attacks. Lupi, for example, will bubble whoever has the highest toughness (most of the time) and machine gun whoever has the lowest HP.
