@ dusty and holodoc

Take this from a game design student: the performance of the game would be negatively affected across the board. Holodoc, theoretically less skills means less server lag because it means less data transmitted, but this is inaccurate. If the mount has an autoattack, that skill could be spammed all day just like a normal player, thus the same amount of data being transmitted. Server lag would basically remain the same, only now it would have to contend with new types of skills and such.

On the flipside, the client would experience a performance hit for sure. The rendering of all of the character models and particle effects are done by your computer. If you now suddenly have to render a bunch of mounts on screen, that impacts your performance greatly. It doesn’t affect server lag, but it does affect personal frame rate.

At the end of the day, mounts would add performance hits to people without high end PCs, there’s no arguing that. Whether it affects server lag is beside the point.

Truth is, Guild Wars 2 already has mounts – Alpha and Omega siege golems. And they are far from just being “fluffy stuff”. Omegas have by far the greatest firepower in the game but are very slow and susceptible to attacks by multiple players. Has anyone made any complaints about siege golems until now? Not that I am aware of. I’ve seen battles which included 40+ golems in one place. There was absolutely no impact to game performance.

And I think ANet should really consider adding mounts with different capabilities and restraints which would prevent their abuse like replacing player skills with those provided by mount. You want to play spotter/saboteur in lets say WvWvW? Cool, buy a mount which will have the following skills: 1 – swiftness for a couple of seconds with an appropriate cooldown (no perma swiftness), 2 – deploy supply traps (mount would have only a set number of traps with no option to recharge), 3 – stealth for a couple of seconds (huge cooldown and breaks on movement or if any other skill is used).

Versatility, that’s the answer. Mounts have actual huge potential. The best thing is you don’t have to put players on top of mounts (clipping issues etc.) you can simply put them inside, like with golems.

Your idea is much different from what everyone thinks of as a mount. You are talking about a combat vehicle. That’s a great idea, but it’s designed to be situation. Golems are unique to WvW where they serve a specific purpose. Mounts as players think of them are generic travel mechanisms. The thread is suggesting a ubiquitous feature which would impact the entire game and negatively affect existing game mechanics. A combat vehicle on the other hand would be a specifically designed game mechanic.

Honestly it would be just as much work as adding normal mounts, except it would be confined to certain events.

Games generally have an expansion 6 months to a year after a game is released in some way or some form, plus the silence of the developers and the staff at arena net is the biggest issue we have here.

This is a bit of a misconception. Expansions sometimes weren’t released until a year or more later. Years ago in the industry, they did things more “honestly” (in my opinion). They developed the original game in it’s entirety and then released it. ONLY then did they start making the expansion or sequel. Nowadays (in the last 10 years) they started developing expansions and DLC before the original game even came out. This has led developers to start dissecting their games and selling off parts of them post-launch for extra cash. That is why you see day 1 DLC and expansions as early as 6 months later. It is also why you see recent games coming with less content and unfinished features.

I mean it took WoW 3 years to launch it’s first true expansion, but everyone glosses over that and says GW2 is “waaaaaaayyyy overdue” for an expansion.

The only time I’m judgmental on AP is if it’s a ranger with less than 200 AP. And the only time I actually check AP is if we wipe on trash before the first boss of the dungeon.

I think it’s stupid to demand 5k+ AP. A year ago that goal post was only like 1k AP. What will it be next year? 10k AP? It’s not fair to shift that goal post. That’s the sort of thing that gives elitists a bad name.

Besides, AP is not a measure of skill. It’s only a measure of how long you’ve been playing.

The design philosophy around the GW2 system vs the GW1 system was to lower the number of possible builds while simultaneously raising the number of viable builds. If you look back to GW1 and the popular builds used, there weren’t really all that many per class. Some had more than others.

Sure there were mathematically far more permutations, but an Echo Mending warrior is pretty terribad.

You must be talking about the GW pvp meta. PvE had tons of “viable” builds, if you could grasp playing outside the pvxwiki box.

Longbow Ranger is perfectly viable here. Bring one to a meta function.. and you will be shown the door based solely on weapon equipped.

Meta perception and actual viability in the big game are night and day. In any game.

Yes, I never got asked to leave a party because I wasn’t using the build of the month in PvE in Guild Wars 1…oh wait.

There were tons of players that required absolutely specific builds to participate in runs of almost all end game content, from voltaic spear farms, to the Underworld to DOA. Looking for an imbagon paragron. Looking for IWAY. These things existed. I ran into them all the time, because I enjoyed making my own builds.

Just a question here…

If you didn’t like the meta crowd in GW1, why did you bother trying to party with them?

Did any other types of party ever exist? IIRC it was either Meta or henchmen.

Then they added heroes and the game became single player…

How did I find non-meta parties all the time then? o.O

Granted it took some patience, and having a good guild helped. But it sure beat the rampant /ragequitting that came along with speed clears that took 2.9 secs longer than optimal. Those guys were kittens and I smiled inside every time they flipped out over a failed dungeon.

Lol… Does that remind you of any other games? :P

make people use mounts and stop being lazy.

Isn’t the point of a mount so you can be lazy instead of…
…walking?

Also, as Xenon pointed above, 100/1.33 is smaller than 100/1. Mounts make the world tiny. If you really want to enjoy Tyria’s vast expanses, walk.

The thing people conveniently overlook is that you have to walk to every waypoint in the game before you may use it to teleport.

Edit: Lol the word “can” cannot be written next to the word “use” because it gets filtered…

I really think the only reason Anet is toying with removing waypoints is because it would get our attention. Mission successful. They wanted to get people worried and speculating about a topic that actually feels like it means something. The ability to travel is one of the most tangible things in the game. Just like destroying Lions Arch and rebuilding it, so too will the waypoint system be compromised and fixed later. It’s just a plot device they are using to affect us. It has nothing to do with adding mounts.

Y’know, wrecking and rebuilding LA actually made it more convenient. Just sayin’.

What if the waypoint scare is a way to introduce an improved waypoint system that better fits an expanding Living Story world? Total speculation and wishful thinking, but it’d be right nice.

Well from a game design standpoint, it didn’t require them to make any new systems to rebuild LA. They made some art assets (buildings and rubble) and that’s it. The environment artist did a great job, but that’s far and away different from them designing a system with mounts. For mounts they would need to have a way to buy or earn them. They would need to address speed and how much damage it takes to knock you off the mount. They would need to actually create the mounts themselves which means a character artist needs to sculpt the creature. An animator needs to animate it. A system designer needs to figure out how exactly the player is attached to the “saddle” of the mount. The animator needs to make new animations for your character sitting on the mount. Etc.

A lot of that is all-new ground-level systems they would have to build, whereas “rebuilding” LA is easy because they already have the technology in place to create terrain and decorate the area with trees and rocks and things. What I’m saying is its easier to make a map than a whole new game mechanic/feature. They might tear down the waypoints temporarily, but you can bet they will put the waypoints back up in some form.

Ok well you’re pointing out the existence of “echo mending” style builds. What I meant was that I can switch my traits around significantly in GW2 compared to GW1. In GW1 for a specific speed clear you would need X, Y, and Z skills no ifs ands or buts end of story. In GW2 you might need to bring X, and Y, but you can swap Z out for B or pancakes or w/e. Like, there isn’t ONE single end all be all mesmer dungeon build. There’s like 6 or 7 variations depending on whether you’re doing reflects or mantras of w/e.

Interestingly that is something that doesn’t really exist in GW2. Yes you have the zerker-only groups, but they don’t nit pick each specific trait and skill you bring. They just want the zerker stats.

I think it would actually be really nice if you got an added reward for doing a full clear. You can keep current rewards for the speedrunners, but if you did a full clear (i.e. every mob killed), you get double or even triple the reward. That would be quite awesome actually.

I actually suggested something like this in the form of vanquishing. It would be a new path type which has no bosses per-se. Instead, all of the paths are opened at the same time and the dungeon is full of monsters you have to clear.

But as with all my ideas, no one seems to like them.

And then they turn around and ask for exactly what I suggested…

And then I just go cry in a corner somewhere…

You can get GW1 and all of its expansions on Steam. I got it on sale a couple years ago for 20 bucks. That included Proph, Factions, Nightfall, and EOTN. All of the content in GW1 is still there and still doable. In fact there still a sizable community playing it. I was really surprised, almost shocked, at how many people still play. I joined a Pre-Searing guild that is actually very active with 20+ people online every day.

Getting enough points for the heritage armor should be no problem if you clear all of the campaign missions in normal and hard, get some mini pets, hero armor, and one tormented/oppressor/etc weapon.

For the record, I’m not adamant against cosmetic mounts. I don’t like them, but I wouldn’t lose my mind if they had some. The problem is when people ask for a mount, they almost always follow up with that small voice…

“Please sir, may I have a small speed buff?”

Followed up by more speed buffs, followed by crafting even better mounts that have more armor and run faster, followed by this that and the other until it snowballs into world of warcraft GIGANTIC mammoth mount with 3 vendors riding shotgun and runs 210% faster than pedestrians. And then you see a guild of kittens parking those giant monstrosities on top of the trading post so you cant see a thing. Oh and in order for me to keep up with those people I have to grind 9001 hours getting thousands of gold and mats for something the game didn’t need in the first place because the environment is already designed in a very specific way to work without mounts.

Mounts

Xenon.4537

For those who want a practical explanation against mounts, here goes…

If you take a look at my wonderful illustration, you will see that there is point A and point B separated by 100 meters of space. Lets say that I can run from point A to point B on foot in 60 seconds. Lets say I apply swiftness to myself to get there 33% faster. That means it will only take 40.2 seconds instead of 60. Here is the maths:

60 * 0.33 = 19.8
60 – 19.8 = 40.2

So what if we had mounts that gave permaswiftness? That means everyone could get from point A to B at the faster speed. Why is this bad?

Because it means having a speed buff reduces the effective size of the world. In order for the world to feel large, it would need to be artificially inflated. If everyone had permaswiftness, the world would need to be inflated by 33% to compensate. In essence when you make the players move faster, it makes the world in which they move smaller.

But wait, everyone already has permaswiftness so whats the big deal? Except that they don’t. Some classes have to go out of their way to get higher swiftness uptime, and they still don’t get permaswiftness in some cases.

Even if everyone did have permaswiftness, ask yourself then whats the point of mounts? If everyone already moves 33% faster all the time, why do we need mounts? Because mounts could go faster than 33% maybe? Oh okay now we’re getting in to broken gameplay territory. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why people don’t want to feel forced to get a 50%+ speed mount just to keep up with the crowd. And if you want flying mounts… HAHAHAHAHA…. No.

There’s even another philosophical tangent we could go off on: If everyone has permaswiftness, why do we even need the swiftness buff in the first place? Why not make that the default run speed? The answer is once again: environmental design. Space is a very real thing that takes much care and consideration to design properly. You might not realize it but Anet takes extremely great care in designing every environment so that you move through it at a certain speed with a certain flow. In fact in PvP the amount of time it takes you to run from near to far point is insanely important from a game design standpoint. If red team can get there 1 or 2 seconds before blue just because the map is skewed a few inches, it ruins everything.

If you look back to GW1 and the popular builds used, there weren’t really all that many per class. Some had more than others.

You’re mistaken. Almost every class had at least 5 or more optimal builds and those builds could be tweaked further due to secondary class choices and non-fixed weapon skills. The most limited classes were probably the Ritualist in a PvP setting and the Paragon in a PvE setting, but they still had as much variety, depending on the task, as any class in GW2.

Many of the viable builds you speak of are really just variations on a theme. I’m not saying there were less than 5 optimal builds. I’m saying that beyond 5 was mostly just slight variations of the original 5. Just because you switch two skills out doesn’t really make it a completely new and distinct build.

If you look at the pvxwiki builds, there’s only 3 or 4 builds per class listed under “good” and 3 or 4 more under “great.” True, you can find your own viable builds without pvx, but they are likely to be similar in some way because the possibility space for viable builds is smaller than you think. The vast majority of viable builds are designed around an elite skill. The elite skill almost always defines the rest of the build. Is it a Panic mesmer? Or is it a SoS rit? See once you pick that elite skill, the rest starts to fall in to place. There would be no reason to make an SoS rit build if I didn’t intend to be a spirit spammer. It would be inefficient. So I pick skills and abilities that lend to a good spirit army. I wouldn’t bring SoS and a bunch of fire magic spells for example. A spirit spammer might not even take SoS however. Maybe he takes SoGM or Soul Twisting. These are different elite skills, but they still fall under the spirit spammer catagory. Just like most ele builds tend to fall under the “nuker” catagory. Prot monks are prot monks, etc.

tl;dr – Whatever build you are using falls under a general catagory or serves a certain purpose. You had hundreds of skills to chose from but it was all just variations on a theme.

Furthermore when I speak of non-viable builds, I’m talking about ludicrous stuff like Echo + Mending. The vast majority of skill permutations fall under this catagory.

And yet, upon hearing they were to be added to the game, I didn’t storm the forums to spew forth drama and hyperobole at those who were in favor of them.

Just sayin’.

I would argue that mounts have the potential to be far more obtrusive than backpacks ever were. It’s sort of like noise pollution, or graffiti. The graffiti might be on someone else’s building, but seeing it slathered all over the city bothers people all the same.

And that’s just addressing the cosmetic argument. There’s still the practical side of the argument which as been discussed to death. Mounts are completely unnecessary to the mechanics and gameplay of this game. In fact they would harm the balance of environment size and design by trivializing travel time and geographic obstacles.

[Suggestion] Condition Criticals (stack cap)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xenon.4537

Xenon.4537

The way the game calculates condition damage is by using the highest value. If player A has 500 condition damage and player B has 3000, then the game will use player B’s value for all stacks regardless of who applied them.

I don’t believe it works this way. I think it actually keeps track of individual numbers per stack. It will even do this if it’s a single stack as it is in burning and poison, in this case it will alter the damage value per tick.

Unless they changed it in the last 8 months, then yes it does work exactly as I described. You can easily test it by having two people in pvp apply bleed to a 3rd person. One person has more condi damage than the other. The bleed always ticks for the same number on the target. They never get a stack ticking for 12 and another stack ticking for 50. The person with the higher condi damage will dictate the damage value for all bleed ticks, regardless of source.

I remember something exactly like this being suggested 2 or 3 months after release. I think the problem is that adding calculations to apply damage and remove the stack and all that would be just as taxing as keeping track of the stacks in the first place.

Also there are balancing concerns. The way the game calculates condition damage is by using the highest value. If player A has 500 condition damage and player B has 3000, then the game will use player B’s value for all stacks regardless of who applied them. Essentially player A benefits from player B’s damage stat. If you suddenly added “hemorrhaging” to the game, all it would take is one person in a zerg with 3000+ condition damage to apply their stack. The rest of the zerg can spam stacks, refreshing “hemorrhage” and still gaining the max damage of it, even though the “true” condition person isn’t the one refreshing the stack.

Best way is to join a guild that runs a world boss schedule. I’m in [Att] and they spawn the wurm manually at a certain time. This helps avoid pugs and stuff. Last time we ran it I arrived on the map 15 minutes before start and didn’t even have to ferry.

Right now the LS isn’t a zerg fest but instances where you go in and do the story line. You can either solo them or do them in a group.

Yeah, the new living world stuff is far less zergy. The maps are designed very cleverly to mitigate zergs, and the content is more focused on the story instances. That said, the story will probably only take a couple hours for you to clear.

Whether it’s worth it to come back? That all depends on how much you enjoy the core gameplay. In my opinion GW2 isn’t meant to be played 8 hours a day every day for 10 years straight. It’s something you pick up and play for a few weeks, then take a break just like any non-mmo game.

Blindness ... why is there duration?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Xenon.4537

Xenon.4537

Blind is essentially the condition version of aegis. Both are very powerful effects which need to be carefully balanced because they completely negate damage. Most blinds last plenty of time to mitigate the desired hit.

The lowest duration blind I can find on a skill is 3 seconds, unless it’s a pulsing AoE. Smoke Screen blind lasts only 1 second, but it pulses every second, so the blind is renewed for permanent uptime while inside the field.

3 seconds (potentially augmented by condi duration) is plenty of time to skillfully “block” an attack while offering the target counter play opportunity. This is coming from a PvP perspective. For PvE you need to be more mindful of the mob’s telegraph and only use the blind right before they attack.

Well in my opinion the best way to get gear is to farm dungeons. Earn tokens and spend them at the vendors. Use the gold you make to buy the rest. If you really like WvW though, you can just run around farming tokens and loot bags to get WvW gear. The vendors are in the main castle of the borderlands. To get to WvW I think you just press B and pick a map.

Edit: If you are looking for more long term goals, you should consider working on ascended gear and legendaries. Those will keep you occupied for months.

Thank you GW2! Looking for the right MMO?

Yeah, we did our research for years leading up to launch, but that didn’t protect us from the gear treadmill that was introduced shortly after launch.
The best thing you can do is to not believe anything and wait at least a year or two for the devs to keep their design philosophy(or at least the parts you care about), and then consider trusting them with your money and time.

Because a treadmill is a single new tier of gear over a period of a year. Gotcha.

A completely optional one at that.

See, MY problem is that all the light armor looks rubbish on female asuras because they don’t show any skin.

I see all these cute flashy armors on my norn and human colleagues and they all look really kittening cute, then when I equip my armor I look frumpy!

This is not okay. If you get to whine about how you show too much skin then I’m gonna whine about how I don’t get to show enough.

Literally the only thing that shows anything is the flamekissed armor set and that’s only because it bares the chest

I think Anet is afraid of sexualizing the Asura because they could be seen as “child-like” in appearance.

Nah, I think it’s due to laziness on their part since both use the same body models. Same issue as charr sharing assets

I can hear the artists in Bellevue Washington cringing all the way over here in Tampa Florida…

I would wholeheartedly support both of you guys working at Anet. :P

It would be a bit like electing Adam Carolla to a political office. Everyone would hate it, but he would probably do more actual good for this country than most…

I just really hope Anet isn’t pulling a Blizzard. A few years back, Blizzard was hot stuff. Then Activision came along… They got a new CEO and “coincidentally” a LOT of employees started leaving Blizzard. In fact, that’s how Anet started: former Blizzard employees. Lots of great studios were started by “former Blizzard employees.” Basically all the real talent got fed up with the direction Blizzard was going, and they left to find their own way.

Anyway it just seems to me that an awful lot of talent has left Anet over the last 2 or 3 years… What does that say about Anet as a company?

Yes, just doubleclick the direction key and you will dodge that direction.

I don’t even have that turned on. I WASD to move and press E to dodge in the direction I happen to be going. Sometimes I change directions on a dime if need be. It’s easy.

Please no more Wowstar in my Guild Wars… The orange swatches are enough.

You know you dodge in whatever direction you happen to be moving when you press the key right? Is that not enough?

Sounds like people were confusing “release” schedule for “development” schedule. They might release patches every 2 weeks, but it certainly takes them much longer than that to make the patches.

New theory: Mordremoth is sustained by waypoint-loss related tears.

This made me chuckle. <3

I think it will be an interesting experiment if they removed all the WPs for a few days. See how much people freak out. I expect mounts and walking will be the hot forum topic for the month. People will claim, yet again, that Anet is trying to go out of business by ruining everything and the world is coming to an end.

Many of the classes don’t become fun until they unlock a bunch of traits and stuff. Mesmer is one of those. My mesmer was crap until about level 60. Now it’s my main.

I just want a big massive expansion pack. Give me something big and juicy to sink my teeth into for a few weeks or months. I want a big porterhouse steak. Instead, Anet is giving me a single jelly bean every two weeks…

Don’t get me wrong, the jelly bean is yummy, but it doesn’t sustain me the way a steak would.
