PvP WvW totally into it.
PvE – besides the stack limits are very kittenty to you, the dps is also just semi good and limited. You scale off better with zerk, yet for solo champs it makes you tankier and is pretty viable even in PvE. But focus on zerk with a party.
Use cinders instead of baby blue.

Combo fields and finishers are pretty complicated and there is a lot to know about them, especially as engineer it’s essential to know how they work, since no other class will have to do so much with them as we do. For most people it’s enough to know fire = might, water = heal, smoke = stealth, but beyond that there is a lot more. Just if you wanna know

Specializations are a progression mechanic available to professions. Initially each profession will have one specialization (1), providing access to a new weapon, elite skill, healing skill, and a set of utility skills. Specializing keeps base profession skills and traits in addition to the new ones provided by that specialization, while offering new profession mechanics or changing existing ones (2). Players will be able to switch back and forth between base profession and its specializations when out of combat (3). The current goal is to broaden gameplay for each profession, providing new roles and allowing players to mix and match abilities (2).

They said the specializations may change the class mechanics completly and will grant them a new set of utility skills, 1 heal skill and 1 elite aswell 1 new weapon.
All turrets explosion proc the blast finisher at the toolbelt, aka yourself, position. The damage the turrets deal will still be at the turrets location, aswell the knockback if traited. The thumper turret overcharge finisher will also stay at the turret itself and not where you are.
The combo field water finisher heals for 1320 +0.2x healing power for 5 allies within 360 radius range wich suits almost perfectly the wave animation.
I can just hope we see a change in HoT. The hobo sack MUST LEAVE. If this won’t happen I’ll probably go on vacations wherever GW is headquartered … >:(

It’s possible and I’d take it since yea – phants die in pve too fast. I’d really like to see a minor trait that whenever you dodge your phants get 0.5 sec distortion to fix this issue, since you dodge at the same time a killing blow’s gonna hit.
Half celestial, since it’s more berserker like. PvE you should go full zerk / kitten, but if you ask full cele or half cele, half cele it is :/

@Xyonon: 3-4 k DPS is realistic over 1:40 fight of Lupi including reflect. No jokes. Recently I recorded myself in a pug run and 5k + DPS for mesmer can only be achieved with proper fury/might/banner/Lightning Hammer/Time Warp buff. On the other hand, ele can self-buff and do tons of damage. Leaving out Ice bow for them would be rather ridiculous.
Including reflect? Inform yourself before you talk. 75% of Lupis HP gets shred by mesmer reflection. I don’t know how much HP lupi got, but 2 min for Lupi as mesmer solo is totally possible. Mesmer dps gets immediately high when he has an LH, and time warps passive damage is also over 20k dps. Mesmer only sux on his own and if there is noone to babysit him and if there is nothing to reflect. Even wall fractal the first boss gets reflected for 6x 15k very often.

And how much of utility do you bring to a PvE party compared to the 2 I’ve most played (Guardian and Thief)?
Engineers are generally brought for their might and vulnerability. They don’t generally provide any real utility beyond that unless the fight calls for CC (e.g., Shoggroth or Clockheart).
Engineers tend to be more useful in fractals than in dungeons, because dungeons are very much about burst damage with ice bows where fractals require more sustained damage (and that’s where vulnerability really comes in). It’s a very useful class to have, but it’s not a top tier, record-clearing class for PvE instances.
I want to add here that the engi indeed is more useful for fotm than dungeons in general. This most likely because dungeons are much easier and don’t need the engis additional utility. But you guys missed some stuff about the engi:
The engineer has huge utilty, but in dungeons it’s often not needed. Fotm is a different story. The only thing he can’t do is granting stability for a long time. But would he able to do that too, then guard would be necro tier.

Well ranger are now 4th in term of dps, while the Warrior is 5th so it was significant enough to change the ranking. That doesn’t make Ranger better than warrior since the warrior can boost the party twice as much as the ranger, but it still change the number by a good margin.
So you’re telling me the dps ranger deals more direct damage than the pahalnx war. I beleve that, but he won’t than the dps war. However rangers are the class with the heaviest damage mods in the game, thx to the signet now, they are the frost bow executer and this gives a huge junk of passive dmg! Sad good rangers are so rare.
That is why you run a staff offhand? Okay you missed your shatter boo hoo. Get two staff clones and a iWarlock up you can do almost 10k damage with one warlock hit… Mesmer isn’t a one trick pony.

Cool now I retread with staff 2, while attacking me the clone probably dies, if not, the 2nd one dies for sure when i retread or dodgeroll again. Until that time the enemy recharges CD too.
And btw – a mesmer that relys on iWarlock to hit is totally desperate. Especially to use that as an argument … no – just no.
Meanwhile, they still haven’t given us a reliable way to Poison our targets, to counter, e.g., the excessive Regeneration that Warriors have gotten with their boosts. Balance at its best through ArenaNet’s team.
True dat – proper warriors with signet almost won’t die in a 1v1. Thei neither kill you, but you can’t contest as mes against them. How about an utility skill that puts a debuff on the enemy that lasts for a few seconds. Meanwhile you MIMIC all the lifereg the enemy has ;D
Hey, it’s purely old DPS number without considering the biggest burst rotation of ele in mind. If you’re convinced that any classes can deal bigger dps than the ele, please present better results with those classes.
That’s why I said READ PROPERLY. I didn’t note those “+ frost bow” for nothing. Ele deals most damage of all classes, that’s what I say here.
Also, mesmer DPS is a real kitten when your illusions die fast from condi and aoe. 10k DPS drops to merely below 1k DPS in a blink of eyes and it drags until you can put up phantasm again. What do you think the actual DPS of mesmer during the entire Lupi fight? 3-4K DPS marginal at best.
I expect people to use their brains. Like you just did. This is exactly what the mesmer struggles. 3-4k DPS is pretty much it. Until the reflection phase, but we didn’t point that one out, now did we darlin’… Overall ye I agree.
1) Those are old numbers. (June 2014 doesn’t include the september patch) For a lot of profession, those numbers didn’t change. But Warrior dropped since then and Ranger got higher in rank since then.
I know but warrior dropped only in his direct damage. Roughly a 5% dmg reduction, fairly more for 6/5/0/0/3 due the adrenaline nerf, forgot about that, thx! But pahalnx is almost untouched since you won’t have that trait and most of your damage is passive → unchanged. Phalanx got hit by the tiny 5% DIRECT damage.

In longer fight, the Mesmer will have better dps, in shorter fight the dps will be less (because the time you spend on summoning). I know this is a huge post, but I really suggest anyone to read it properly IF you wanna talk about it. Thx You have to distinguish between solo and in a party. It also depends on the build one ir running.
For solo there is an almost clear list of “who’s the boss” (screw you time warp!). However this is for single target. If there are 3 targets to hit, the thief would fall behind the ele for sure. If there are 5 targets, the warrior would fall behind the ele aswell.
Solo
Now this one is hard to explain. There are 2 kinds of dps in a party. The “look at how big my donger is” dps wich is simply how much direct damage one deals with the help of the others and second the true damage one bringt to a party. Means if there is a party and a phalanx warrior joins, the others can all focus on dps and do not have to care about might stacking, the additional damage is counted towards the phalanx warrior as passive damage. Passive damage are vulnerability, spotter, empowered allies, banners, time warp, might and reflection (wich varies the most).
Important!: Keep in mind that only a phalanx warrior OR a conjurer ele can stack up to 25 might to get their passive damage. Same goes for 2 warriors, only ONE will get the passive damage of the banners. The 2nd warrior will only deal the pure 13’500 dmg without passive dmg addition!!!
Also don’t take this too accurate. It’s very hard to calculate a proper passive damage, but it’s approximately correct.

That youtube link … It made me feel sad, really. Those clones were actually strong But I have to agree with ANet – I would not like a class with so much AI damage. Shifting damage to the mesmer itself however would have been optimal, but it rather seems they simply removed the clone dmg.
I highly disagree with you on our “damage” in pvp. You really have to play a concerto on your keyboard to pull of some crazy bursts however I find one of the best combos is
iZerker+Mirror Blade and blink (at the same time)+1 dodge with a mind wrack…. You don’t pop the clones out so far they run toward your target. Gotta space em some or just pop them right in the targets face…But a good mesmer can pump out easy 8k damage in 1-2s. A great mesmer can do 10-12k damage in the same amount of time.
So you use all your skills + your life saver (i know blink shatter deals a good junk of damage, but …) for a 8-12k spike. Great. Now you sit there – next to your target, all GS skills n’ shatter on CD, your dmg is gone, you have to wait, you can’t deal anything more significant (<- !!).
Nothing that is already hit dies from that, unless it’s zerk. And if the target is able to doge in that moment, or block only a few of those shatters (guard, engi, ranger, everyone got block, invuln), then you just became useless.
Look, I know what a mesmer is capable of in pvp, and it’s not enough for the high prize he pays.
I like that one too but I’d rather not waste my blink for that. I like to get my 3 clones up, wait until i can create more and let tem 6 illusions shatter at once (F3 → F1) for the rupt n’ vuln.
Play with that tool and you’ll notice that rangers aren’t “who cares” tier. Necros are though. Mes and guard are just there for the utility. Everything else – agreed, however the engi shines by the vuln applied to bosses and has better 3-5 target aoe and most likely will outdamage the thief either direct or with passive damage. But it all depends on the team comp.
Both are great. But there are a few things that are actually important to know:
Engi is great for PvE. It’s definitly the hardest class to play, but has almost no skillcap and is a total allrounder.
Ranger is a pain in the kitten to play in PvE, but yea he’s quite easy in PvP. What do you want to focus on btw?
PvE and PvP are different stories. But even in PvP I don’t agree with you. You cannot justify the damage to be balanced with others if you count the sigils too. I don’t mind the weak aa in PvP when you play a burstmage, but mind wrack should really burst and not just tickle enemies that aren’t zerk too. Besides the obvious announcement of illusions running toward you makes this skill incredible easy to dodge. Mesmer are forced to play zerk when power, because they deal no damage otherwise. Zerk mesmer means your damage is average, but better don’t get hit as a glass"pistol". The only thing you can burst for a good junk of hp are other zerks – aka other mes / afk thieves.
Airwolf – it has been a looong time since I’ve seen an actually good looking mesmer in this forum. You are one of them. Mind if you tell me what silver dye this is? Cinders?
I agree, Mesmer damage is almost too low for pve. You just use Mes for reflection and quickness / portal bot. Otherclasses can do everything else better than him wich is kinda sad. Same goes for pvp. Power based mes are most of the time simply portal bots.
I’d like to see a lower cast time on mantras to help the dps of mantra of pain.
I’d like to see a much no damge reduction on F1 per illusion shattered.
I’d like to see more viable traits for shatter.
I’d like to see F3 being aoe on default.
I’d like to see a damage increase in gs aa, staff aa (power) and scepter aa (power).
I’d like to see sigils working on phantasms (+5% dmg / +7% crit) aswell runes.
I find those changes appropriate. The sigil and ranged aa power dmg buff even long overdue.
Give mes somd dmg love. Please. We are even forced to play zerker in pvp to deal as much dmg as other with cele or def.

Engineer is one of the best classes right now. Whoever told you they were bad has no idea what he’s talking about or just miserably failed at playing one himself, because they indeed are hard to play.
Openworld everythin is cool but dungeons, kits is the way to go!

You shouldn’t show your blocks so obvious. If the thief would have been playing mesmer aswell, he woul have negated all of ’em.
Thats because shatter mesmer loses most 1v1 against a same skilled enemy. However portal allows you to fight dirty at multiple places and succeed in 2v1.
For beeing a 1v1 kitten you should go for interrupts or conditions.

There is like 1 major build you can go and swap out a few traits. But build diversity? No, only in pvp / wvw.
If you need to be convinced to play Engi… Then don’t bother imo. Play what you like, not what others tell to do.

It’s about what you want to do. If you choose between guard, ele or engi, in short you choose between the support, the aoe damage glasscannon or the slightly less dps allrounder.

The focus is indeed not a bad weapon. I noticed it too, one underestimates the pull and the projectile shelter.
Powershatter mesmer strong in the current meta? I don’t know about you but unless you’re going stealth in there for some surprisebuttseks, any proper player will dodge or block your obviously announced shatter or at least negate the already average damage to low damage.
The only reason why mesmers are picked in the current meta is because they can turn fights into unfair 2v1 and are “semi-omnipresent” due the portal. They get rekt by too many classes to be “strong in the current meta”.
It behaves and works the same way kittentered Strength.
Well it’s a lord from the new game mode in pvp. However those are hopefully based on original professions. The red lord also was a guard so … we can still hope.

And yea, we talk about on bosses (!). 20 stacks vuln are easy reachable on elite trash even without bufffood. But bosses are a different story: most other classes struggle at 5 stacks, engi maintains 15 stacks and with some spikes with barrage or mine field up to 25 for the moment.
You won’t cap vuln nor bleed only by yourself on champs or higher tier enemies.
The problem is that (except high level fractals) sustained vuln cap is not needed. Bursts of vuln cap ate more than enough. I really think glyph of storm and ice bow shouldnt be on the same class.
Using glyph of the storm results into a huge personal dps drop cuz you either lack of an arcane skill to proc your passive or you miss the signet. Both bad choices. Missing frost bow is out of the question.
Sustained vuln is good everywhere, there are plenty of champs and legis to kill in every dungeon and even low lv fotm. More crit chance also increases faster vuln stacking wich results into more damage right at the beginning. Some people underestimate vulnerability. Each vuln stack is almost comparable with a might stack on your whole team.
I always see the animation too. Maybe you run on low quality or just don’t see it cuz of the acid bomb? I mean you should at least see the text message saying “Area Healing”.

Stability mantra isn’t for spam, you have to keep an eye on what’s going on and so it’s 3 or 2 times a stability, wich with the low enemy attack speed is the same as a 8 sec guard stabi field. It’s just harder to use. So it’s you, not the mantra that has flaws.
Blink is useless since you won’t be faster in any way. You run with your group anyway and unless you run arah, you won’t need blink.
It’s obvious that 5 points in inspiration will be weak dps wise, since it’s a reflection build and not a dps build. If you want to focus on dmg, either phants or personal, 64004 is stronger than 54050. Don’t compare those builds. What you should compare is 64004 and 66002.
