Unlimited uses? So basically I could fill all 4 slots with Thief utilities and have a Thief with a total of 7 utility skills?

Because that’s broken as hell.

Elementalist – Crystal Arcana: Create a lasting combo field based on the elementalist’s attunement. Ground targeting AoE. Single use.

What is a “lasting combo field”? Please don’t tell me you mean a permanent combo field, because that would be ridiculously OP.

Anything that is good for a thief is OP, according to the community.

I know I am not the only (ex) thief out there who does not like this mechanic’s implimentation. I mean its the only reason why the thief is called a thief. With traits, it does ALOT for one button press however that is all it does. Looking at the big picture, Stealing is only there so the thief looks like a thief because… well… a thief isn’t a thief unless it steals some ****, right? Most thieves consider Initiative to be the main thief mechanic anyways since it ties in with everything a thief can do. Which is why I present to you…

Stealing REVAMPED

F1, F2, F3, F4: Steal. When successful, Steal is replaced with a stolen item. The rest of the steal slots are put on a short cooldown (5s) to prevent spamming. When a stolen item is used, the slot reverts to Steal and then placed on a longer cooldown (35s). Every other slot is placed on a short cooldown (5s). Maximum items stolen: 4.

Stolen Items
These vary depending on the target. However the item that is stolen is usually a modified version of one of their attacks. Stolen Items are as followed:

Warrior – Weapon Set: Equip the weapon set you just stole. Attacks are modified and get put on cooldown instead of using initiative. Lasts for 10 attacks before they break.

Alt.) Throw Set: Hold Weapon Set to throw weapons at the target and heavily inflict them with crippling conditions. Single use.

Necro – Dead Ritual: Create an aura that can mimic Wells, Corruption, Minion Summoning or Marks. Single use. Usually Condition inflicting AoE.

Elementalist – Crystal Arcana: Create a lasting (10s) combo field based on the elementalist’s attunement. Ground targeting AoE. Single use.

Alt.) Elemental Weapons: While Crystal Arcana remains in your pocket, you have a 20% chance on crit to cause certain conditions. Conditions are based on attunement.

Mesmer – Mind Veil: Produce a variety of effects ranging from invisibility to clones and many more. Single Use.

Alt.) Double Team: Hold to charge. Create a perfect copy (killable companion) of yourself when completely charged. Charge 8s. Max copies: 1. Single use.

Engineer – Toolbox: Use a stolen kit. Each attack has a chance of breaking the kit.

Alt.) Hack: Hold to charge. Take control of an enemy’s environmental item. Charge 10s. Single use.

Thief – Extra Gear: Steal becomes one of the target thief’s equipped utility skills. Has unlimited uses. (can’t slot the same skills)

Alt.) Discard: Hold down for 3 seconds to discard the gear and free up the slot.

Guardian – Light Arcana: Sear a symbol into the ground at your feet and produce supportive effects to you and your allies. Stolen Symbol is random.

Alt.) Inner Fire: 20% chance to gain a boon on crit. Boon is based off of symbol stolen.

This is why they suggest just going full zerker in PvE. And honestly, it’s one of my absolute least favorite qualities of GW2 is it has been a vicious cycle of Burst harder and make more 1 shot mechanics to slow down the burst, rinse and repeat. This cycle has absolutely killed the ability to pseudo tank, and I’m really not sure why it had to come to that. I always loved tanking and I think being able to play a self-sufficient tank without the need of healers so the burst could do their thing better would have been phenomenal, but alas I fear its far too late for that sort of change.

Anet wants you to explode rainbow unicorn lightning, fire and 5 digit numbers everywhere so that the game can look cool. Didn’t you know?

This is the exact same reason why I left WoW and the exact same reason why I refuse to do fractals and dungeons with groups.

I would like this.

I completely understand the desire for solo content.
But MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplay Online Roleplaying Game.
Too much solo content kind of defeats that.

I did absolutely love GW1, it is my favourite game hands down, but it was a completely unique creature and I don’t imagine we will be seeing anything like it again.

Just because it’s a multiplayer game doesn’t mean that players should have to group up to do things.

Perma stealth ruined the thief class

No just horrible players refusing to improve themselves and the developers actually listening to their complaints.

ON TOPIC:

1.) Legendaries: Being subjected to “carrot-on-a-stick” tactics has never been a pet peeve of mine… until I played this game. To put it very nicely, Legendaries have been overhyped. The purpose of the legendary is to turn players into spectacles even though they are not that great at playing the game (and it feels more offensive the worse the player is). There is nothing special about them except for their obnoxious particle effects and the slight bit of convenience (stat changing) while OOC. The items that are used to craft them waste space in the already limited bank players have. Not only that, the player must get multiple full stacks of expensive items (which take alot of grinding) just to make one “gift”. Let’s not forget the over-the-top effects. The rainbow sparkle explosions make it hard for the weapons to look good on armor. But what completely ruined them was that they were not account bound. You can buy them for $600-$700 using the gem exchange. You don’t even have to play GW2 to get them lol.

2.) Testing: It was already confirmed they don’t do very much testing. And when they do test their updates, its either only on paper or only for 15 minutes to make sure its working. In fact, thieves are a living testament to that. Up until around 2 months ago, there wasn’t a single dev who actually PLAYED a thief. Instead of experiencing the capabilities of one of their professions, they listened to white knights like the one I quoted. Now thieves are the worst profession in the game because they provide nothing beyond ganks and finishers. Oh wait, nevermind. They provide easy kills. My bad. :P

3.) Profession Balancing: I am under the firm belief that the developers are as biased as a majority of the playerbase when it comes to professions other than the ones they main. Regardless if this is true or not, it’s wrong and thieves are useless because of it. If the developers accept bias into their profession decisions, then EVERY profession must have an equally biased say. One developer maining one profession each, every profession developer discusses with players who main their profession to improve those professions. Then the developers gather around and discuss balancing buffs between each of the other professions. That’s how it should be done.

4.) Gem Store/RNG/Money Sinks: Most profitable PvP ever. Why play GW2 when you can just flip the market? Let’s not forget, the gem exchange allows you to convert gems you bought with real money into gold to spend on top tier gear which provides cosmetic and literal power. You can buy just power in GW2. Then the gem store has RNG boxes where you have a chance at maybe getting a piece of an item used to buy a weapon skin. I have reason to suspect that RNG doesn’t stop with drop rate but with player’s toons and characters aswell. If you account gets the right number that day and the toon your on has busted through the second layer, all the player has to do is place 4-20 rares in the mystic forge to get a precursor. They don’t even have to play for very long. Even Magic Find is known to have a negative effect on drop rate.

5.) Business Model (or lack thereof): You kitten players off by manipulating content so that the only decent farming could be obtained by participating in Living Story. You kitten players off by removing newly opened areas after the living story progresses. You kitten players off by saying one thing and then doing the complete opposite. And finally, you kitten players off with misinformation. It is clear Arenanet does not have any direction set for this game. It is clear testing isn’t a priority. Exactly wtf are you trying to accomplish anet? This game is not what you hyped about.

No dead horse is fine. People continue to kitten about thieves even though they are the worst profession in the game. Easy to kill by anyone who doesn’t suck and they provide nothing to team play besides blast finishers, skipping and ganks.

If anything, every thread kittening about thieves after Dec 10th should be automatically put there.

i think for a lot of people WvW is endgame.

i think originally they intend for WvW and sPvP to be end game.

unfortunately, guild wars 2 attracted way too many PvE care bears.

them PvE care bears do not WvW or sPvP and kept demanding for more PvE content.

and so we have living stories nowadays.

I think some had no choice but to do PvE because WvW is atrocious in its current state. If it wasn’t just about flipping towers and zerging down everything, I think more players would actually get on.

…. from 9 months ago. …. when culling existed….. and before some of the abilities (i.e. caltrops) were nerfed. …. using conditions in a meta where most people were set up to counter burst……. before other classes were significantly buffed……. and the top comments are still l2p (coming from non-thieves)…..

I would like too, someday but right now, ranger class is my heart; even though it is mercilessly being tortured in the hand of thieves and Arena.net.

Can we get an option to thumb down someone’s posts?

There are times where a comment or post is so bad that the ones reading it just want to reach through the internet and slap them. However, its impossible and doing anything that isn’t politically correct is looked down upon nowadays.

So how about this: Place a -1 button option beside posts that adds towards a separate red counter, kind of like how urban dictionary does.

It will show the amount of people who disagree beside the amount of people who agree so that the people who agree do not get taken away by the amount of people who disagree and really controversial topics will come to light.

I also propose that the thumbs that indicate if the post or comment was heavily -1ed be the use of a thumb down and a flaming thumb down after a number of disagrees have been reached.

it’s pretty clear you don’t even play thief. you’ve said some extremely ridiculous and sometimes conflicting things since you started this smurf account.

if you THINK thieves can easily crush other warriors, I can gladly show you otherwise. Thief is not really a good 1v1 class, it has plenty of weaknesses and warrior is one of them.

I am sorry that you are struggling with your thief vs warriors. However, thieves can defeat them. I’ve done it sometimes, and I’ve seen others bet them routinely. You need to time your dodges and gap losers based on their animations. Don’t worry, it takes a while and gets easier with experience. Good luck!

Seeing everyone take the stealth side makes me a little depressed. I would like to see more thieves excelling without stealth.

Why? What is the point to be a thief and do not use Stealth?

Why do you care about those whiners, if they’re just incompetents who can’t see that there is other methods to counter it, or just leveling up a thief and play with him instead

i feel like your just saying this to feel original in someway when its really not. ofcourse stealth can be considered “op” but a thinking person would realize to compensate for our low natural defenses (a squishy melee) our abilities lie in evasion. Its easily countered with aoe. If you wanna just talk about pve thief sure u can play that without stealth have fun plz dont bring that into these kind of discussions though as its pretty meaningless since your not even a thief at that point. You signed up to be a “thief” a character who uses the shadows to his advantage. Anyway back to the original post, In my opinion d/p is a very solid choice for people starting out with lots of surviveability (mistakes can be made). In wvw people tend to run… A LOT, and so with your kit you have infinite chase potential without much need for positioning. However, d/d thief is what i’ve come to see as a true thiefs kit in terms of skill and damage and hope to master myself. Its strength is the ability to permanently stealth within multiple enemies without heavy reliance on initiative(about to get nerfed for dp) with tons of burst. I think both weapon sets are very strong but most people preffer d/p because d/d takes a lot more skill

I didn’t mean it to sound that way but during that time I was trying to get thief players away from using stealth all the time because at the time it was the only way for newer thieves to give any competition.

I have done well with d/d conditions, p/d and other builds that require very little to no reliance on stealth, however the meta changed into something that became harder to handle without resorting to more stealth. At which point, I just gave up.

I just wanted some more thieves weaned off stealth so all the baddies would die more to non-stealthing thieves than stealthed ones. Now thieves are going to have 0 viable set by the time dec 10th rolls around.

They haven’t ruined the game. they’ve balanced it so that all players can enjoy it. Most thieves still enjoy their thief and will continue to enjoy playing it long after the December 10th patch. As anet said, the init change is a massive buff. You should trust them.

I sometimes wonder if you even play a thief since you don’t make sense most of the time. Initiative change is a buff for certain very specific builds. It is not a massive buff for all as you say.

Assuming the infusion of shadow changes don’t fall under the subject of the initiative changes, then unless you use one of the few initiative supplements (such as signets of power) then this SHOULD be a pretty good buff. Anet has said they don’t want people relying on these supplements anyways: “The default rate of initiative regeneration was simply to low and was causing players to either take traits to suppliment it…This is something that has to change. What these changes intend to do is to increase the power of every single thief build that is not running these traits”

If you look at the big picture, it’s a nerf. About 60% of the traits that thieves have are situational if not a waste of a trait slot because most of the traits that are worth the slot increase initiative in some way.

Something anet DOES NOT understand is that half the time a thief chooses a trait it’s because there is nothing better to slot. Another thing that they do not understand is that when thieves run out of initiative their chance of dying skyrockets because most of a thief’s survival comes from the spamming of blinds, stealth and evades.

Initiative is what allows a thief to use skills. These skills provide damage a/o evades, blinds and stealth. No initiative means no access to those skills ergo no evades, blinds and stealth. No evades, blinds and stealth = no survivability.

Initiative is everything to a thief. If anet touches initiative it affects the entire profession, not just a few builds, and everyone would know this if they would have stopped kittening and played the profession.

I am not going to be telling you all “I told you so” when the thief population takes another dip on Dec. 10th.

I remember telling people at some point that if anet kept nerfing this profession that they will kill it. A good majority of the playerbase ****ing hates it on multiple levels now, including the ones who play it.

The only ones left are diehards using that exact same thing every other diehard is using, trolls that don’t even play the game and new thieves who havn’t even took a dip in thieve’s pool of suck.

But I’ve only theorycrafted everything thief-related. What do I know…

The profession will break Dec 10th. It isn’t fun and it’s getting less fun every patch so those who havn’t figured it out how bad this profession is yet will move onto a different profession. I’ll give new thieves 2 months max before they start feeling the suck.

You are right that 10k is low for a backstab, however there are people running around with super unicorn + protection which can reduce the damage of backstab to those levels.

Secondly, its all about warriors this month. Of course nobody is going to use eles because warriors do not need eles to stay alive.

if you don’t know how to be invincible with stealth, you are doing something wrong. lol

If you can’t spell invisible properly, you might have a problem. You have an even bigger problem if you can’t differentiate between the two words.

People try so hard to watch things they despise burn when they could put that energy towards being a better player. :I

If the thief profession is to truly be a thief, it should have plenty of access to everything via theft.

Stealing life, boons, endurance, certain attacks, switching out conditions with boons should all be part of the thief’s attacks while they have nothing to produce for themselves. They should be able to improvise with what they steal to at least create some sort of synergy for themselves. And for a thief to be able to hold all of the kitten it’ll be stealing, the thief will need deep pockets (meaning open up F2, F3 and F4 for stolen items).

The thief SHOULD NOT just be another rouge class whose only redeeming quality is ambush and going transparent all the time.

On my Server many Guilds say that Warriors/Guards/Necros are the only Classes who is viable in Zergfights? Is this so?
Why are then the others not Viable?

It isn’t that other professions are not viable, but because warriors are THE MOST viable.
